The Flow of Life and the Protection of Dharma

A satsang on dharma, intellect, and spiritual protection.

"Dharma rakṣita rakṣita. If you protect dharma, dharma will protect you."

"The roots, the foundation of dharma is mercy, Dayā. The Vedas say, 'Dharma rakṣita rakṣita.'"

The lecturer addresses a gathering, exploring the nature of dharma as righteousness, mercy, and natural law. He discusses the human intellect as both a source of problems and a divine tool for protection, emphasizing the need to surrender ambition and ego to access divine consciousness and solve life's personal and impersonal problems. The talk covers the proximity of the astral world, the power of prayer and mantra, and concludes with a welcome for the week's spiritual programs and a closing prayer.

Welcome, everyone. Today is a day of exchange. One group has left, a second group has arrived, and tomorrow we will go, another group will come. That is life: going and coming, going and coming, going and coming. Today’s sky is without clouds, the weather is warm, and the mosquitoes are very hungry. So it is nice of you to take care of them. How was this morning’s pūjā? Very nice. Very good. So, did you understand something? That was on the video, yes? Is there someone who would like to have this on video? Raise your hands. Okay, so you can make fifty copies. Because you are only on verse thirty-three? Hands up. Many blessings to all our brothers and sisters around the world, practitioners of yoga and daily life, or any other spiritual path. The blessing of Śrī Ālag Purījī’s dīkṣā is coming to you from the beautiful country of Hungary, where we have several seminars, or what you might call retreats, every year. This time, we have to solve the personal and impersonal problems of life. This means social problems and health problems. In health comes the physical, mental, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and so on. The human is that kind of creature which has a very developed, or can develop, intellect. Definitely, the human intellect is getting deeper and more complicated. Still, it is said the human intellect has an immense capacity to store wisdom. Or, in this modern computer language, you can say the capacity to keep information. At the same time, humans are more emotional than other creatures on this planet. Humans have free decisions, and of course, every creature has free decisions in the way they are thinking. Definitely, every creature has the ability to think something, in a different way maybe—through smell or vision, because of the hunger, the jāṭharāgni, which is placed in every creature’s life in the body. That jāṭharāgni requires something to calm down, and that we call hunger. And every creature is searching for food. That hunger in some way may be cruel. Life, life, bhakṣate, jīv, jīv, bhakṣate—life will eat life. It means the strong one will kill or eat the weaker one. How that weaker one will die, the other one doesn’t care. The victim is always suffering. For death, it doesn’t matter how you die. For your hunger, it doesn’t matter who that is. Animals, birds, insects—all are eating others’ life. But the human has got that part of intellect and intelligence, so-called in their heart, mercy, dayā. Dayā dharma kā mūla hai, pāpa mūla abhimāna, Tulasī dayā na chhoḍīye, jab laga ghaṭame prāṇa. Dayā dharma kā mūla hai—the roots, the foundation of dharma is mercy, Dayā. The Vedas say, "Dharma rakṣita rakṣita." If you protect dharma, dharma will protect you. If you can’t protect your dharma, dharma cannot protect you. Dharma has several meanings. Mostly, people understand dharma means religion. Yes, because religion has those principles which are called Dharma. Dharma means righteousness. Dharma means justice. Dharma means protection. Dharma means to help. Dharma means to be honest. Dharma means to fulfill your duty, your obligation. That is eternal sanātana dharma—the dharma of a plant to grow and have beautiful flowers and seeds to grow further. Dharma of the tree is to grow and give the fruits free to every creature, oxygen to all. Dharma of the river is to flow. Dharma of the lake is to keep the water. And the dharma of the four seasons in a year: spring, summer, autumn, winter. And the dharma of the season is to create that kind of temperature, that environment. And the dharma of Mother Earth—there is a certain time when Mother Earth is ready to give birth to every seed, what we call sprouting. In that season, there is a special energy awakening in the earth which helps to sprout the seeds and grow, and what we call seasonal fruits, seasonal vegetables, seasonal crops, and so on. Dharma means righteousness, right conduct. And adharma means cruelty, injustice, backbiting, cheating, and so many things. That’s called adharma. It looks like a beautiful fruit, but it is plastic, a fake apple. It looks like a fire flame, but it is a fake flame. It is not easy to keep dharma. You may think that you are keeping dharma, you are spiritual, and this imagination—you can imagine that you are God of the entire universe. You may think nobody stops you, but you aren’t. So human dharma should be to follow and fulfill human duty. Human is created on this planet, on Mother Earth, as a protector, not as a destroyer. And for that, God has given intellect, a better intellect to humans, to think positively, to think how to help others, to think how to solve the problems of others and your own. Now, this intellect, which is constantly acting, and our senses and our body, is a slave of our intellect or mind, and our body will do according to that. Often, our intellect is our own obstacle. It’s a big rock on our path. A big rock on our doorway, or a big fire on our doorway: our own intellect. Intellect should have humbleness, positive thoughts, and be full of mercy. The best quality of the intellect is mercy. They are. And that is the nature of God, and that’s why we used to say God is merciful. Yes, God is merciful, but if you have also that much mercy, you are also God. But our mercy is selfish, our mercy is full of attachment, and our mercy is very limited, and the mercy of God is limitless. So the problem which we are facing is mostly a creation of our own intellect. The problems in which we are just now, it doesn’t matter which kind of problem, are our own creation, our own way of thinking also. And then there are problems, indirect problems. Suppose you are sitting in your garden peacefully at home. You didn’t do anything wrong to anyone. You are just sitting happily with your family, having a piece of fruit. Fruit, and your neighbor tells you, "Stupid one, don’t eat in the garden, go away." Now, that creates a problem for you. Someone told you, stupid one, without any reason. Now it is like having thrown a stone in the peaceful lake. Or unnecessarily, someone begins to complain against you, that you come too late at home, and opening your door, your dog is barking. There are many people, so these are indirect problems. Impersonal problems, but still they are problems that are targeted to you. The problem of the family. You know, when you met the first time, or you had an engagement and you married your wife or your husband, you had no problem. You were very happy. That’s why you married. Very few married with a force, you know. Wife came with him. She said, "Yes." And the man said, "Yes." Very rare. But it happens. So, what to do, or what can we do? How much can we protect ourselves from such problems? This is the important protection, what we call bulletproof glass, the bulletproof protection. That energy, and who can do this? Only some divine power can do it. It’s beyond our capacity. And that is already taught to the humans: to follow ethics, morals, principles, and to believe there is God. There is some superpower. Maybe animals also believe. One Mahātma said, O my dear one, even birds and animals, morning and evening, they sing the name of God, they remember. Who are we to say they don’t remember God? How do you know? You are not that, friends. From Assisi, could understand the birds. You are not there, Devapurījī, who can speak and tell, order the snake, "Don’t go anywhere, sit here twenty-four hours." And we saw the snake, we were running behind, and he ran away. He didn’t follow us today. It was nearly one and a half meters long, a beautiful, green, violet, thin snake. He was a football player, my God. Yes, that poison is a very strong poison. So, even you don’t understand yourself. Even we don’t understand our family members, what they think. Something God has given us that we don’t know. If he would have given these abilities, we don’t know what we would have done, what human would have done. We are not that Mahāprabhujī. When someone came, Mahāprabhujī greeted them, first asking the name of the person who came, where they were coming from, and what problem he or she had. And he could say what you are thinking. Don’t think like that. My God, now if I will know what you are thinking, my hair will stand like this. Yes, and you don’t know what I am thinking. So there God has kept a safety, security, and there is a security number. And this number is not easy to find a combination; there are one hundred eight numbers. And now, one hundred eight numbers you have to make a combination; it’s not easy. So animals also feel love, animals also feel hunger, and animals also feel pain. And animals also don’t want to die, not only humans. But we humans have something very special: our intellect. We can create situations, helpful situations, something good. An animal cannot do only what it is, that’s all. Of course, trained animals can create a good situation. Your trained watchdog, or hungry tigers and lions, they can create a situation to catch the animal. So, besides all of this, there were souls, or people, what we call self-realized, God-realized. So, God incarnation means God-realized persons. They have the same energy, same power, same ability. For example, we have here a fire flame on this candle, a small flame, a tiny beautiful flame. And five kilometers far away in the field, a very big fire, the forest is burning. Now, that is also fire, and this is also fire. This fire, a tiny flame, has the same quality and the same strength, the abilities to burn everything. So, fire is fire. And therefore, when you call the God-realized person self-realized, that is in that area or level of that consciousness, God-consciousness. And that’s what makes the difference between the normal person and God. Now, that God-realization, divine consciousness cannot come to you or to me or to anyone until one has negative tendencies somewhere within oneself. In 1973, one man came to me in Vienna. They were two friends. And they said, "Swāmījī, we have, till now, twenty-seven masters." How nice. And I said, "Which one am I? That you will be, or you are already the twenty-eighth one." I said, "Nice. How many do you want to have?" He said that we don’t know. We hope the last one. "What do you want?" He said, "We would like to have blessings, a power." I said, "I see. What kind of power?" Power that we can hold the sun. It doesn’t move anymore. I said, that’s why you don’t get that power. You can get power to hold the sun, but there is a wrong, negative thinking behind this. There can be only one who was Hanumanjī, who could, who swallowed the sun, you know that story. And Hanumanjī was very young, you know, when you read the Rāmāyaṇa, you know that is... So, why do you want to stop the sun to show how much power and siddhi I have? That is why, even if you have twenty-eight or one hundred twenty-eight gurus, you will not get this siddhi. Ambition. Inside, you have a longing to be something special, holy, divine, this, that. And that you will not get. Jīvatahī murdasam rahe nai siddhi nai pīr. Svāmī dīp avadhūt avalyā mahā vīran ke vīr. It is said in the testament also, you have to die in order to live. So you have to die. That means that your ambition, your ego, then you can live like the divine, the holy. Then everything is there. But no, I want to have this, I want to be like that, I want to sit there, I want to, I, I, hi, hi, bye, bye... By in the graveyard, therefore, self-realization does not come to us. In imagination, we are self-realized. We can talk very nicely. Oh, beautifully, so wise. We are so expert to talk and tell that one is like this and that made this mistake and that one is doing like this. His Excellency, the Ambassador of India, last week or this week, he was here and he spoke about the mind and so many things. He spoke about mind, dharma, and karma, three things. Exactly, he said, which I repeated many times, who are you to judge someone? And if you do, it’s a great mistake. Even if one has done a mistake, you are not that one; you will judge that what he or she did was wrong. Because you don’t know why. So, ambition is the biggest rock on our doorway we can’t remove. We are closed in the cave, and it is such a heavy rock, so you can try day and night to push with both your legs and hands, not a millimeter can you move. And that is why we cannot remove our problems or solve our problems. And so we have to take shelter in some divine other powers, what they call God, a protection. There is God. There is God, definitely. If you believe or you don’t believe. You don’t believe that tomorrow the sun will rise. You don’t believe anymore that the sun will not rise, but wait, 6 o’clock. Now you have to wait twenty-two hours? Not twenty-two hours, how many? Eight? Yeah, ten hours. Then in ten hours you will see, oh, the sun is rising, I was thinking the sun will not rise. So if you believe or you don’t believe, but there is some prayer for it, there are some mantras and pūjās. And pūjās and mantras, they are not only for the physical world, they come to the astral world too. And how far is the astral world? Not very far. It is very, very close to us. There is not a distance of half a millimeter. It is very close to our skin, the astral world. So don’t think the astral world is somewhere else. And all are in the astral world, beautiful things. You also flew on an airplane. I also fly often on an airplane. And especially in the night, I am looking, may I see someone in the national world having some satsaṅg or something. So many thousand meters high up, in about thirteen kilometers of space, the jumbo is flying. So high up, surprised to see Kushaṅga in the airplane, and drinking alcohol. I thought so high up is a svargaloka, heaven, but the heaven, that is heaven. So heaven and hell are within and inside and outside of us. So that this human spirit, this human consciousness, the human intellect, the human mind, and human senses can create unbelievable things. And for that, we have to perform some ceremony, okay? We are sitting here, and our friends, the mosquitoes, they are very active. Now, someone came and put me a rakṣābandhan, a rakhi. You know what rakhi is? It will be on Wednesday. A protection thread: brother is protecting the sister. So someone came and gave me a Rakṣābandhan against mosquitoes. And it is really no mosquitoes coming here, I don’t know why. Now, if I believe or I don’t believe. So this giving was a ceremony, that’s all. Or you come and make... now this is okay, because this is something against mosquitoes. But when you go to the temple or the church, then the priest or a paṇḍājī, they make abhiṣeka with water, holy water. You say, "What does this priest think?" You see, but you don’t know for which mosquito he is doing. That Paṇḍājī is doing abhiṣeka, holy water, you know, Oṁ Śānti, Śānti,... Pavitra, Pavitrai, you know, for peace. So, when in the church a priest is doing with the water, holy water, throwing, don’t think, "What is this ceremony?" We don’t believe. Let’s go to the restaurant, drink alcohol, and open this, what do you call this, where it comes, a lot of foam comes out, what is that? A companion. What? A pen. This abhiṣeka is very good. Everybody makes it like this. That is a Kali-yuga, my dear. That is Kali-yuga. When the alcohol bottle goes up, and everyone says, "Whee!" That is asurī-british. But a priest comes, and the name of the Holy Father, the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Son, like this, we don’t believe. So this is how a human got wrong imaginations and the wrong education in their mind. So if the mosquito spray is helping so that the mosquitoes will not come, exactly the prayers will help so that the Ādhibhautik, Ādhidaivik, and Ādhyātmik, these three tapas will go away from you. They are in a different part of the universe, and we are everywhere. We are also omniscient, omnipresent; we are everywhere. Just we came on this beautiful planet or Mother Earth. They don’t see the Earth as a planet. Do they count as a planet? No. The Earth is not counted as a planet. There are only nine planets. Yes? But Earth is not included. That’s the other problem of astrology. We will talk afterwards. Yes. In the śāstras, in the old scriptures, Earth is not as a planet. But, well, anyhow, so we are happy. We are out of planets, having holidays. Okay? Enjoy. Beautiful. Anyhow, so prayers, mantras. So, first of all, is that resonance of that sound, mantra, when we begin something, anything. Even when you open your eyes in the morning after you sleep, you open your eyes. What will you say? Which mantra will you say? Nobody understands. You must say, "I am," you know, "I am the," what you call this in opera, they say, "Derogant," yeah? That’s it. Oh yes, I was a good devotee, you know. Oṁ Śrī Gaṇeśāya Namaḥ. Along with this, the mantra will protect you. Next experiment. When you open your computer, you say, "Oṁ Gaṇeśāya Namaḥ." Then you will get a good email. You can give the name to your Gaṇeśa, your computer, my Lord Gaṇeśa. And then you make computer pūjā. Your boss will say, "What are you doing?" He says, "Pūjā." To what? To Gaṇeśa. Which Ganesha is this? Computer Ganesha, yes. We are doing... If you go to India, every rickshaw driver is doing, three-wheelers, he is doing pūjā to his small rickshaw energy power, you know? Even the one who is going on the cycle, he is doing pūjā and going. It is in... You within you that will protect you, that will guide you, that will create a very positive energy around you. Like your ex-president of Croatia, whenever I come or we meet, he says, "Swāmījī, you always bring such good energy." It’s good energy. Many days it will remain in my office, good energy from Swamijī. What does it mean? Yes, there is energy. So pūjā will remove the conflict and troubles which you have in your house. One is alcoholic, one is drinking drugs, one is outing, one is this. Ten members of the family, and they are in ten different problems. Do something together, and suddenly the problems will disappear. So, this week we will have those programs, those mantras, and those performances of the ceremonies. It is how to do to solve personal problems and to protect from impersonal problems. To have a successful life, so think, who am I to judge someone? And thinking, "I want to be this and this," ask why. I want to go to samādhi, but I should know why. That’s it. So, welcome to you for this new week’s program. Kriyānuṣṭhān will be, advance āsanas will be, children’s program will be, and cooking program will be. Many, many programs will be. So you are most welcome, and welcome you, Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān Devīśvara Mahādeva Dharma Samrāṭ Satguru Svāmī Mādhava Bhagavān. Oṁ Śānti Oṁ Purī. Pūrṇamadaḥ Pūrṇamidaṁ Pūrṇāt Pūrṇamudacyate, Pūrṇasya Pūrṇamādāya Pūrṇamevāvaśiṣyate. Oṁ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ. Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān, Devīśvara Mahādeva, Dharma Samrāṭ, Satguru Svāmī Mādhava Bhagavān, Jai Jai, Oṁ.
