One Evening with Śiva: A Bhakti Sandhyā

The evening is dedicated to Bhakti Sandhyā, the union of devotion at the sacred junction of day’s end.

This gathering is in Hungary for a yoga seminar. The custom is to offer one evening to a deity such as Śiva. Sandhyā signifies the joining of sunset and night or night and dawn. Wake during Brahmamuhūrta to meditate on the Guru’s lotus feet. The root of meditation is the Guru’s form, of worship the Guru’s feet, of mantra the Guru’s words, and of liberation the Guru. Sleeping through this time attracts laziness and heavy karma. Even birds and creatures sing the name of God at morning and evening. Whoever knows love knows God, for love carries divine light. A human who neglects prayer at these junctures is little different from an animal. Tonight is for Alakhpurījī Siddha Pīṭha, and through that for all. The gurus find joy when devotees are joyful and well. Problems are the finest school; without them life is dull. Those who face many problems often succeed more in life. Every endeavor begins with remembrance of Gaṇeśa, giver of prosperity, perfection, and happiness, who manifests in the Guru. Submit all life’s burdens and outcomes to the Lord; if granted one vision, surrender the love of the entire world. The world rests in God’s hands, so live in it like a lotus above murky water: good company, thought, speech, and study are the path to liberation.

"Problem is the best school to learn. Without problem, life is boring."

"Even animals and birds sing, remembering the name of God morning and evening."

Bhagavān kī Deveśvara Mahādeva kī Param Samrāṭ Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandajī Bhagavān kī. Today is Thursday, a very good day. Welcome, all of you, all dear brothers and sisters around the world. Welcome also to our webcast. We are here in the beautiful country of Hungary. Please, can you open some windows from this hall? We have a very multi-star hall with natural air conditioning. Everyone feels very comfortable and very happy. It is a perfect place for a yoga seminar, no matter which way: Haṭha Yoga, Kriyā Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Jñāna Yoga, Rāja Yoga, Mantra Yoga, Nāda Yoga, Karma Yoga—all kinds of yogas. This place is very, very ideal. There is a new trend, a new fashion in bhakti yoga. And I was thinking today, I shall introduce you to this new trend. And that’s what they are doing mostly in India and Indians. They call it one evening with Śiva or one night with Śiva. Some said one evening with Kṛṣṇa, and some said one evening with Hanumānjī. It means dedicate today to Lord Śiva, and they have, in the temple, in front of the temple, singing bhajans dedicated to Lord Śiva. That’s called one night with Śiva. Once they invited me also, and they said one evening for Krishna. So I told them, “What about the other 364 evenings?” But that’s how we are, selfish people. Some call it bhajan sandhyā, and bhajan means the singing, sandhyā means the evening. Now, this is sandhyā. Exactly this constellation, the time where the sun is setting, night begins, and day is ending, that’s called Sandhyā, which means joining. Morning Brahmamuhūrta, also you can say Sandhyā, where night is gone and dawn has come. So there is one song: “Night has gone, dawn has come.” Wake, my children, wake, sitting in the āsana of meditation. Meditation, gazing at my Guru’s lotus feet, night has gone and dawn has come, wake my children, wake. Sitting in the āsana of meditation and gazing at my Guru’s lotus feet, Dhyāna Mūlaṁ Guru Mūrti, Pūjā Mūlaṁ Guru Pādam, Mantra Mūlaṁ Guru Vākyam, Mokṣa Mūlam Guru, in Brahma Muhūrta. If you are sleeping, you look at your Guru, you look at your Guru... You look at it, you will lose your good karma and bad karma. All laziness from the whole world and all bad karma flows to that person who is in Brahmamuhūrta, more sleeping, and it is those. Those who have bad karma from past lives enjoy the morning sleep, and the one who has a dark future and is missing a golden chance loves the sleep of the morning hours very much. There are many people, even from childhood, whose children wake up early automatically. And there are little children, their parents are still sleeping, the children wake up and they are playing just until the parents get up. So, Sandhyā means joining, uniting. Japat paśu aur pakṣī pyāre, subah aruṇyam. Even animals and birds sing, remembering the name of God morning and evening. These creatures are helpless; they can’t do anything against human cruelty. But don’t think that they don’t believe in God, or that they don’t know what God is or what life is. Who knows what is love, it doesn’t matter which kind of love, physical, spiritual, or mental, knows also what is God. And so even the trees know what love is. And where the love is, there is the light of God. So on this special time, if a human doesn’t remember God and pray, there is little difference between other creatures and humans. So today we dedicate time for Alakhpurījī Siddha Pīṭh. Today is the day, the night we dedicate to Alakhpurījī, to Devpurījī, to Mahāprabhujī, to Gurujī, to all of us. So when we do for all of us, it means automatically we do for Alakhpurījī Siddha Pīṭh. So Mahāprabhujī is happy, and Devpurījī is happy, and Gurujī is happy, and Swāmijī is enjoying. When they are happy and you are happy, I am enjoying, because I am a million times happier if you are happy and healthy. Problem is the best school to learn. Without problem, life is boring. People who had many problems, even in childhood, are more successful in life, in profession, in business, in study. And who didn’t have any problems and was always taken care of, the person becomes lazy and doesn’t know what to do. Problems are there to fight, problems are there to solve, problems are there to wake up, and problems are there to realize that, yes, such things can happen and there are. So this evening is dedicated to our Alakhpurījī Siddha Pīṭha for one hour, and I would say that here people make themselves a little free, and the singer comes here. Who is here? Who is singing? Who will sing the bhajans? So please, if we can move from this point to Parvati and to this backside. If you all can move for me, it doesn’t matter, there or behind me, but here we need, in front of Mahāprabhujī, the singers and the instruments. So please come, and today our artist is the many, many others. All good singers come. Stand up, girls. Stand up. Parvati, go there, behind, yes, the singers facing the camera side, looking this side. Come closer to Mahāprabhujī’s altar, this is a little far. Give me this table for sitting, thank you. Move the chair, move it. Asana, give me the table here, upper. So this evening is dedicated to bhakti yoga, in devotion to our Alakhpurījī Siddha Pīṭha Paramparā. Bhakti Sandhyā. If you don’t understand the words, don’t worry. Just enjoy the melody, the singing. So anyone of you who would like to sing, you are welcome to come to the front. But, of course, you have to follow the rhythm. Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān Kī. We will begin with Śrī Gaṇeśa Jī Mahārāja, Gajānana Jī Padāro Mere Gaṇapati Deva Guruśā And Sumaro Gaṇanāmī Gurudeva. Sumaro Gaṇanāmī Gurudeva. This is a bhajan dedicated to God Gaṇeśa. Gaṇeśa is the name of Gaṇeśa, Bhagavān Gaṇeśa. Anything you begin, anything you write—poem, articles, building a house, a new job, anything—you should first remember Gaṇeśa. Similarly, also in the satsaṅg, and when you have to sing, then you should remember Gajananjī, the Gaṇeśa, then you will be successful. So Mahāprabhujī made this bhajan, “Sumāro Garnāmī Gurudeva.” And that Gaṇeśa is also manifesting in our Gurudev. So this was the bhajan dedicated to Śrī Gaṇeśajī. Ṛddhi, Siddhi, Sukhadeva, Śambhu, Gaṇanāyaka, Gurudeva—because He gives you riddhi, harmony; siddhi, perfections; wealth; and sukha, happiness. Deva means giver. So Ṛddhi, Siddhi, Sukhadeva, Śambhu, Gaṇanāyaka, Gurudeva. First, says Gaṇeśa, so first adore, meditate on Śrī Gaṇeśa. So next, please, after the adoration, ceremony, and salutation to Gaṇeśājī, then we can do what we want, I mean good things, not bad. So, Śrī Gaṇeśa. It has begun, so anyone who is singing bhajan for the first time should remember and sing Gaṇeśa’s bhajan, or you can say at least Śrī Gajarāñjī Mahārāj, Kī Jai. Next. If a human’s birth is not human, if a human is a man, and “manava” is a mind, this is a different way. If I meet a human’s birth, then I will become a worshiper at your feet. Ab saup diyā is jīvan kā sab bhār tumhāre hāthoṁ meṁ. All the responsibilities and burdens of my life, Lord, I surrender in your hands to you. Hai jīt tumhāre hāthoṁ meṁ aur hār tumhāre hāthoṁ meṁ. My success or my loss, both are in your hands, it depends on you, Lord. Agar ek bār tujhe pā jāo, if once I get you, my Lord, your darśan, God, once I see you, arpaṇ kar dūṁ duniyā bhar kā pyār tumhāre hāth meṁ—I will surrender the love of the whole world in your hands. Whenever and if I get a human birth, only one thing, that I become a servant of your holy lotus feet. Hai sansār tumhāre hāthoṁ meṁ, aur maiṁ sansār ke hāthoṁ meṁ. The world is in your hands, Lord. I am in the hands of the world, but the world is in your hands, Lord. If I have to live in this world, then help me to live like a lotus flower above the water, above the dirty water. So this saṃsāra in that way is polluted by many negative qualities. It’s very important for us to remain untouched by this, above by that. Satsaṅg, good company, good thoughts, good talking, good book reading—that is for us the solution, the way to mokṣa. Next, three bhajans, everyone. So now you get one more. Either three or five, always. Five. Okay, then three more. Nārāyaṇī. Very nice. Chocolate for prasāda. Yes, for Nārāyaṇī. Thank you, Nārāyaṇī, for a nice bhajan. So, who is the next one? Bhakti, okay? Bhakti Sandhyā. Three bhajans. Brothers and sisters around the world can also enjoy Bhakti Sandhyā, dedicated to Śrī Alakh Purījī, Siddha Pīṭha Paramparā. Oṁ bolo Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān kī Jai. Oṁ Purī Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān kī Jaya, Śrī Satya Guru Deva kī Jaya. This is a spiritual lecture about Yoga in the Indian tradition. Oṁ boli Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān kī Jai, Śrī Śrī Devaiśvara Mahā Deva kī Jai, Śrī Śrī Mādhava Kṛṣṇa Bhagavān kī Jai, Viśvaguru Mahāmaṇḍaleśvara Paramahaṁsvāmī Maheśvarānandajī, Satguru Deva kī Jai.
