The Value of Life and Practice

An evening satsang on the value of life and spiritual practice.

"Life is a practice, and practice is life. Many times we don't know the value of our life."

"Great are they who understand the value of others' lives too."

Swami Ji addresses a new group of beginners after a fortnight of advanced programs, advising them to practice to overcome obstacles like laziness. He gives direct instructions for the audience to move closer, then shares a philosophical reflection on understanding life's value, introducing a children's story about a camel and a fox to illustrate a point about selfishness.

Good evening to everybody. We had a fortnight of beautiful Anuṣṭhāna, Kriyā Anuṣṭhāna, and advanced Yoga and Daily Life programs over the last two weeks. This morning, we began the program with all of you, the beginners. I would advise you to practice so that next year you can step onto the second step of Yoga and Daily Life. There are some obstacles in life. The biggest obstacle is laziness. We do have time, at least from time to time, between practices. So I would advise you to practice the beginning course for Yoga and Daily Life so that your memory becomes a little better, your everyday stress will be less, and you become more self-confident. Also, the people who, till yesterday, were very disciplined—when I told them to sit more in the front, they were sitting in the front, not far away like you are sitting. There are many things we have to learn, also sitting: how to sit, where to sit is also a practice in life. So you can do it now. Come a little more. Yes, that’s it. That’s the bottom. Thank you. Very good. Now, you know, I cannot hear when you speak, so I have to listen. Thank you. And this side also. Thank you. Yes. Kriyā. Anuṣṭhāna. Bus, bus. All right. Finished. Stop. Don’t come anymore. I didn’t tell you to come. Only friend people. The sādhanā we call practice: sādhanā hī jīvan hai, jīvan hī sādhanā hai. Life is a practice, and practice is life. Many times we don’t know the value of our life. Only when something terrible happens do our eyes open, and we know the value of life. When we don’t understand the value of our own life, then we will not understand the value of others’ lives. But great are they who understand the value of others’ lives too. And sometimes we have to give some lessons so that one realizes the value of one’s own life and the value of others’ lives. When selfishness and greed awake in us, then we do not care about others. There is a small story. This small story used to be told to small children. So once my sister told me a story, and today I remember it because it was Rākṣabandhan. There were two friends: one was a camel and one was a fox, good friends. Living in the forest, in wild land like Australia—there are many wild elephants and camels. You don’t have wild camels here, do you? Only some camel brains. The camel and the fox had a program every evening, a plan of where to go to eat. So there was a season, and one farmer had a big field with corn, kukurucha.
