The Strength of Hanumān and the Power of Fasting

An evening satsang on the strength of Hanumān and the spiritual purpose of fasting.

"It is said that where you recite the name of Hanumānjī, spirits and ghosts will not come near you."

"Fasting is to remember God, or to be aware of your aim. In your life, what aim do you have?"

The lecturer addresses the gathering on a Tuesday, sacred to Hanumān. He explains Hanumān as a symbol of inner strength, discipline, and devotion, connecting these qualities to sports and yoga. The discourse naturally expands into the true purpose of fasting—to develop willpower, health, and self-awareness—while humorously critiquing modern excuses for not fasting properly. He weaves in teachings on the senses, marital harmony, and the universal practice of fasting across religions.

Good evening to everybody. Blessings of Śrī Mahāprabhujī. Welcome, all of you. Nice to see you again. The day was beautiful because you were all here. It is the day of Hanumānjī. Many people are fasting on this day to gain strength, to get away from fear, and to attain inner psychic strength, especially against ghosts, spirits, and black magic. It is said that where you recite the name of Hanumānjī, spirits and ghosts will not come near you. Especially all the bodybuilders, they are bhaktas of Hanumānjī. All the karate people, if they would like to be successful and good, then they should have an Iṣṭa Devatā, Hanumānjī. You know our rock from Slovenia, Petrović, the European world champion. His iṣṭa devatā was Hanumānjī. He always said that whenever he goes, he is king. And then he would say, "Jaya Śrī Hanumān," and then he was ready to go. So it’s a very secret mantra. Now, every champion will repeat it. So Hanumanjī is great. That means your inner strength. Hanumān means your inner strength. Your strength is your wisdom, because Hanumānjī is also known as buddhi, intellect, and the devotion, the strength of love. He is obedient, very clear, very faithful. You will see that mostly people who are in sports—it doesn’t matter which kind, of course not hunting, but skiing, water skiing, swimming, marathon, and so on—inside, they are very, very devoted. Discipline. Their first lesson is discipline. And in yoga, Ṛṣi Patañjali said, "Yoga begins with discipline." So each part of yoga is coming from yoga. In every ashram, in every ṛṣi kula, guru kula, they were practicing yoga, and they had one place in the ashram that had nice sand in it. Like we saw today on the coast while walking, there were four children playing with a net in the sand. That place is known as an ākhāṛā. So, akhāṛā actually means the place where you learn the body art, like you may call karate, or many, many kinds of physical body building, wrestling, and so on. That’s called an ākhāṛā. From four o’clock in the morning, when the dawn comes out, all the brahmachārīs, all the students have to go to the akhāṛā and practice discipline, physical training, and mental training to overcome the pain, to develop the willpower to endure the situation, to be strong to face any difficulties, to help anyone in any situation. And never have the feeling that you will be the loser; don’t give up. So there are certain instructions; after that, they go washing, then do the yoga exercises, stretchings, dynamic movements, the postures, and then meditate and pray. This is the early morning program. Now you will know that all people around the world, those who are doing sport, what you call the higher sports, have great discipline. If they fail the discipline, they are out of the team. And they have to endure physical and psychic pain. You know, when they lose the game, it’s not easy for them because they were training for years. Only the loser knows what it means for him or her to have lost. To accept that is not easy, and sometimes the winner also becomes crazy out of so much happiness. A winner also has to have the strength to digest that you were a winner. Some years ago, one man in the countryside played the lotto in Austria and won a few million shillings (that time was shillings). When he got the message that he got over 50 million, he said, "Oh, God!" and he got a heart attack and died. So, sometimes certain news is so exhausting. So, they are all devotees of Hanumānjī. Hanumanjī is the symbol of strength, the symbol of righteousness, the symbol of justice, truth, love, wisdom, and protection—to be protected and to protect. So Tuesday is a beautiful day, and sometimes they have so much energy. On Tuesday, you must fast, so that you have some time to press down your energy, to open some vents. Fasting is good for clearing the brain. Brain strength develops, and brain tension releases. On Tuesday, after fasting in the evening, they break their fast. Then they eat what is called Hanumanjī rotī, Hanumanjī chapātī. When you eat that, you have strength for the whole week. It’s not easy to digest Hanumānjī’s chapati. You need someone, like bodybuilders. Because Hanumanjī’s bhakti, Hanumanjī’s prasād, only Hanumanjī’s bhakti can digest it. People like us get one time stomach problem, one time diarrhea, because we are not trained. We didn’t train our digestion, we didn’t train our body, and we didn’t train our mind. So, Hanumānjī’s chapati has a lot of good brown sugar. One man eats half a kilo. And one and a half kilo flour chapati. My God, so thick and so big. And a quarter liter of olive or sesame oil. That’s why Hanumanjī likes oil. Because of that, Hanumānjī loves oil, healthy oil. He used to import the oil from Croatia, I think olive oil. You know, so it is positive energy. When you can fast, then you know why you are fasting. Yes, you become hungry. Breakfast is missing, lunch is missing. The body requires food, but you said, mentally, no. And someone comes with nice ice cream. And he said, "Well, I’m fasting," but because he said, "Don’t eat anything out of corns," and no salt, but ice cream is only milk and sugar, and that is allowed in fasting, so okay, I eat ice cream. It is said that on a fasting day you can eat nuts, so you take half a kilo of nuts, almonds, cashews, pistachios. Salt, juice is allowed, so you drink half a liter of juice. And now in India, you know, they said, "Fasting, potatoes are allowed, pomfret." And then they said, you know, this Himalayan salt is allowed for fasting. And the chili doesn’t matter, so there are so many excuses. So there is a call for food for fasting. On that day, they eat more than normal. That’s not fasting. Fasting is to remember God, or to be aware of your aim. In your life, what aim do you have? What is your saṅkalpa? How to remain faithful to my words, what I gave my word. What disturbs me from achieving my goal? Which kind of energy can’t I control? How much discipline I have, self-discipline. How much confidence I have in my indriyas? It is said there are ten senses in this body, but rare yogīs have them under control. All can be controlled, but two are very hard. One is the tasting indriya. Nice taste. We are the slaves of our taste. When it’s gone into the stomach, it’s finished. The stomach doesn’t feel the taste. Does the stomach only feel if it’s junk food or healthy food? Often, the stomach is so sad. The stomach tells, "Oh man, why are you torturing me? I am taking care of you. I am your life. But you know, whatever you give me is for you. What you give me, that I will give you back." But we don’t listen. We only listen to the joy of our gums and the tongue. When it’s gone down, it doesn’t matter whether it’s bitter or sweet, nectar or poison. Then you will know what it will be. So this is very hard for us to overcome, and that is the cause of 90% of diseases, and we know. But we can’t give up. We know, and we know that we have to die because of this, and we will die with that. Doesn’t matter if we will die one year earlier or twenty years earlier, but we will die. So to die ten years later or die now doesn’t matter. We can’t give up. I have to struggle to give up, and I give up, but after 10 years, I die. So some people are thinking like that. But a wise man said, life means healthy. Ill life is not life anymore. An ill person is dying every day, going through the pain of torturing the body in different ways. But still, it is said, in your hand, oh man, you can protect and save yourself. What to do? Only one thing: change your habits of eating and drinking. Swamiji, please, can you talk about something different? No, don’t always talk the same, eating, eating. Many people, we are thinking, "We don’t like this," that we change eating. So it is in your hands. We have our beautiful logo: "World peace in your hands." So your health is in your hands, and your suffering is in the chemist’s hand, the medical shop. That’s it. So in your hands, health will give you a good life. But that will not decide, please. Today is Tuesday. Austrians say Dienstag. Dienst means service. Why they gave the Dienstag? That I have to look in the dictionary. Sunday is the day of God, the Sun, and in Sanātana Dharma, on Sunday, everyone, at least on Sunday, gives water to the Sun, offering prayer. Every day, if not, then at least on Sunday, Sūrya Namaskāra. With the mantra: Om Sūrya Namah, Om Hāsne Namah, Om Bhāskara Namah, Om Hiraṇya Garbha Namah. These are the twelve names of the sun. Every hour is a different position, and every hour has a different effect on our planet where we are. So that’s why Sunday is the day of the sun god, and so it is the day to pray to the sun god. Monday is the mind. After prayers on Sunday, now you come to your mind, the moon, which is the source of our life. And the moon is Shiva. The moon is emotion. The moon is the most powerful light. If it were always a full moon, can you imagine how humans would be? I knew someone who, on the full moon day night, used to walk on his roof with two pistols in his hands. Sometimes, looking at the moon and shooting, so the neighbors knew that today is the full moon. His wife used to go and sleep in another house. So there are many, many people who are affected by the moon, the ocean also, the wildlife also, the birds also. So the moon is more powerful than the sun. And similarly, the moon is ladies, emotion. Ladies are more powerful than men. So, thanks to God, but that I will not tell anymore what I want to say about ladies. So, they are very nice. Yes, after these two comes Tuesday, and that’s called Dinstak, the day of work. So work on your body, work on your mind, and work on your social life. Hanumanjī was working for all. He was a karma yogī. God Kṛṣṇa said, your yoga life will be successful through doing karma yoga. One yogī said, "I shall pray to all goddesses." Then he said, "But all goddesses, they are bound to karma." Then he said, "Why should I not pray directly to God? Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva." Then he was thinking, but though they are givers of the law of karma, they are also bound to karma. Then he said, "Why should I not pray to my karma?" Karma is great. So prayer to your karma means overthink what you are doing. That’s it. So dinstak, the service to thyself, that means the service to the society, to the world. Then comes Wednesday. That is the day of knowledge, wisdom. To remove the obstacles, Gaṇeśa. Then is Jupiter, Gurudev. Jupiter is a guru, the day of Gurudev. Then comes Saturday, Friday, that’s very good. Friday is for Mother, Santoṣīmātā, santoṣa, contentment. So there is one goddess, her name is Santoshīmā, and on this day, if you fast on Friday, it is said that your wish definitely will be fulfilled. But what not to do on that day, not to eat, not to drink, what and what you can do, is very interesting and very secret. It’s a Friday. And then, so all the seven days are gone, and we are still sitting here again. Tuesday, Hanumanjī, so bless you for a nice day, a nice evening. That’s why today is the most beautiful day: day of the strength, day of the justice. They have the truth, they have the devotion. They have the wisdom, they have the protection, everything. And we are together? That’s right. Fasting. So, the subject, I didn’t mean that I will talk today about fasting. But fasting is done, first of all, I think the fasting was done for good health. It is said in nature also, certain animals, they are also fasting. In Jaipur ashram, we had one dog, and also in Jadan ashram, on Thursday, the dog was fasting. We gave chapatis, and they took the chapatis and went somewhere and put it under the earth. They went somewhere to bury it under the ground; they didn’t eat. After the evening prayer, after sunset, we noticed that he went, he dug his chapati out, and he ate it. Yeah, it’s not a joke, really. It’s a joke. The one dog we had in Jaipur ashram, that time ashram was not so big. What I’m telling you is the story, let’s say, about in ’70, around ’70, 71, 72. And the name of the dog was Rāmu. And one day he passed away, and all were very sad. Even Holi Gurujī was on that day, didn’t eat. He said, "Today he will fast for that dog’s good." And similarly, we had in Jadam also one dog. So, animals do have feelings. But we humans are very weak. We would like to do. But when we see, then our willpower gets little. And when your willpower gets little, you become weaker and weaker. There was a man, and he said, "I’m very strong. I don’t believe in ghosts. I don’t believe in spirits." And so on, and one day he decided to go to the mountains. It was summer, a beautiful summer month of August, July, beginning of August, moon shining, and he was in the mountains walking there somewhere. And there, about 100, 200 meters far, there was some plant growing in the field, like a sunflower, can say, or something, one, big leaves, and the moon was reflecting on it, and a little wind was blowing, so it was moving like this. The man stopped again, he went again, he went after every ten steps. Now what is happening? He begins to think people are right, there is the ghost, and he is looking there, and with the wind, the plant is moving like this. And the hair of the man is standing up. He’s a strong bodybuilder. Now he can’t walk. He thinks, "If I run, he will run behind me." So, better I should be ready to fight. He was standing like this. He didn’t dare to walk, and he was trembling. He wrote this in his biography. And then some night bird, you know, what you call the owl. The owl was making woo. That was the last. He began to scream and run. So there was a farmer’s house, and the farmer said, "Who is there?" He said, "Help, help, please help." So they spoke. The farmer said, "Yes, why did you go there? Because we know there is a living ghost, you see?" That was it. The farmer said, "But I would like to see him today. Come with me." He said, "No, please don’t do this to me." But the farmer took him with him. And he took the torchlight and put the torchlight on it. It was a plant. That man, the body builder, he looked at the farmer, and he looked at himself. And began to laugh. Oh, God. He didn’t believe in God, but it is very interesting. How came from his mouth the word, "O God"? So it means the one who does not even believe in God is also believing in God. So the vision can make you very weak. Smell can make you very weak. The taste can make you very weak. So this is what humans, we are very weak. We are very emotional creatures. If someone tells us something, immediately we are angry. If someone tells us nice things, immediately we are happy. We are very gentle, very, very gentle. And therefore, we also pay back by being humble. That we do something which is not good for our body, our mind, and so on. So fasting is done to develop the strength. To say no, we can say no to everyone, but to ourselves, it is very hard to say no. And sometimes, maybe we say, "No, no, thank you." But then we are saying inside, "I am strong, I said no." Now, this is also not good. This is ego. And sometimes you say no, and after one or two hours you are sorry you said no. You never know if you will get this chance again. "Oh God, I missed fasting. I could have done it tomorrow." So how are we supporting our weakness? So it is said, a promise is a promise. Especially to yourself, and that is to develop the willpower. And that willpower will help you to come through, that you will achieve that. And on that day, you take some vow to do something good. Some people have a fasting day, they take a free day to go and help the needy people, or go in the forest and enjoy the forest, or go to the hospital, or an old home. Many good things you can do. And many people are praying, meditating, and singing bhajanas. Many of you are employed, so you have to work. So, you try more to be kind to your colleagues. First of all, fasting is to develop the willpower, self-confidence, and then health. You know, the best medicine, it is said, is fasting. When you are ill and have fever and this and that, it is said, "Don’t eat anything. Just liquid, that’s all." Water. So all bacteria and everything, your body, your immunity will clean it. So fasting is very, very important. And in every culture, there is fasting. In yoga, there is fasting. In Vedic Dharma, there is fasting. In Christianity, there is fasting. In the Jewish religion, there is fasting. In Islam, there is fasting. And in Islam, there is a very strict fasting; they don’t even take water without seeing the moon. And the moon is Shiva, actually it is developed from Shiva. Islam is connected to Shiva. So every religion has fasting. Why? Because it reminds you of God. It reminds you of your social service. It reminds you to develop your health and have more time for prayer. And you are taking spiritual nourishment. Mahatma Gandhījī said, "Physically, I can fast. But mentally, I cannot fast. My mental tonic is my prayers. So my prayer is my strength." So, physical food is not a strength; the strength is your willpower, your prayers, and your beliefs. And therefore, develop your willpower through fasting, fasting, fasting. And especially when you are in a seminar like this seminar we have, then try to fast. Okay. Reduce your food 75 percent. You will see what happens in one week. Your skin color will be different. You will feel very light. But don’t do it for only one day, or two days only. Because when for two days you eat very little, and on the third day, of course, the hotel breakfast will be very little, and you decide to eat more. Then the whole buffet, which is for 500 people, the 50 people will finish it. So don’t do like that. Fasting is more liquid: water. Juice is food. Milk is food. Nuts are food. Yogurt is food. Only water is pure water. Try this now. There are physical difficulties. Some people have low blood pressure. If they are fasting, they get dizzy. They should not fast so strictly. Some people get a headache. They should not do this. Some people feel very weak. They should not do this. Pregnant women should not do this. And the persons who have certain diseases and must take some medicine should not do this, but you can train yourself with little eating and more eating of some fruits, juice, and like this. So, we can cure our disease, doesn’t matter mental or physical, through our discipline and willpower. And you have to help yourself. The problem is we think the doctor will help me, and the doctor always tells, "I can’t help you. Okay, for temporary, I give you medicine, but even medicine you have to take, so you have to help yourself." So you are the doctor of yourself. And as I told you before yesterday, the best medicine for a human is a human. What does that mean? Happy family atmosphere. A happy friend, a very happy husband or wife. Happy children, happy neighbors. Every day, we would like to hear some very nice words. We don’t want to hear negative words every day. We want to see a smiling face; we don’t want to see a sad face. You know, there’s one picture. If you turn this side... If you turn the other side, the face is looking like this, so which side is that? But smiling not only here, smiling from the heart. We know there is a good day in life. And we know there are sad situations in life, unfortunately. When there is sad news, we cannot dance and celebrate. We do accept this, but generally I am telling. Do good to your friends. Do good to your husband or wife. Always be happy and smiling. Don’t fight. So lucky are they who have a good husband. And blessed are they who have a good wife. They have good children also. But don’t expect only from your wife. You have to do something that is the best and good for you. And don’t expect something from your wife, or from your husband. You have to do both sides, good things. So the health of the husband depends on the wife, and the health of the wife depends on the husband. So someone told me, one psychologist, who made a kind of research work, said mostly all directors and high-post people die earlier than their wives. Why? Because in the whole office, they are the boss. Everybody will say, "Yes, sir. Your Excellency, yes, Herr Director." But when he comes home, then his wife says, "Josko, please, can you bring me a little ketchup?" But he wants to hear, "Your Excellency, please, can you bring me..." Now, this poor man has to go up and down, up and down here. It’s very hard to balance, and in reality, that psychologist said, the wife is the ambassador, not the husband. They are so dominating. One ambassador and his wife were there, and we were talking. The ambassador wanted to tell something; you will not believe me. She told him, "You shut up." Let me tell you. She didn’t say, "Please, can I explain?" She said, "You shut up." Will the ambassador, secretary, or anyone within the office tell you to shut up? Because the wife said, "You are an ambassador in the embassy. At home, you are my husband, okay? Equal, right? My dear, go and clean the kitchen." So mostly, the director dies before the wife, because wives are dominating. That’s good, somehow, but it depends. It can also be a man dominating. There are some men not good, too. So these are the exceptions. Generally, they try to be good. So I am telling you, if your husband is not satisfied with you, he is not guilty. You are. You have to make him happy. And if you are unhappy, he is guilty. He has to be kind to you. That’s it. So lucky are they who can make a relaxed, lovely, good atmosphere. So someone said, "Swamiji, I’m looking for a partner, not for sexual things, but, you know, when I come home, or he or she comes home, I’m looking forward to someone waiting at home for me, and will smile and say, 'How nice you came. How are you? How was the day? Is everything okay? Come, sit down. Have a glass of water.' I need warm words. Otherwise, you go home, your husband will say, 'Why did you come so late? I’m hungry. Can you go in the kitchen, please, and prepare something to eat quickly?' He said, 'Yes, I will.' Where are the nice words? Come, sit down, five minutes, relax." That’s why humanity is suffering. So, kind words, kind behaviors, mutual understanding—actually, no one is happy to get divorced. Why does one man come to that point that he wants a divorce? Or why one lady, a woman, decided to get divorced? Why? What brought her to think like that? There was a day that you were one of the best partners. Everything that was best and beautiful in this world was your partner. What happened? So there must be something. And what was that? You should find out. So why is that happiness gone? So when you fast, when you pray, when you meditate, you come to know the cause, and you understand the cause. And you will do something to solve the problem. How? Wisely. That’s important. To solve the problem, there are many ways when you come to know what’s happening. A wise person will do in such a way that even a partner or another one doesn’t notice. That you solved the problems, then the other one will be sorry for that. That’s it. So it is said, the wise to wise meets and talks about wisdom. And when donkey meets donkey, they show the buttocks and both legs, kicking. Boxing. So, you know, the boxing technique came from the donkeys fighting. And before the donkeys, the boxing came from the kangaroos. My God, you know how quick the kangaroos are boxing? You can’t imagine. It’s like music. Yeah, when you see the kangaroos, how they ball, don’t go near. They are not boxing with the front hand. But they are boxing with the back leg. The tail is very strong. You can hear 50 meters far, a hundred meters far, bang. That is, we will go one day to Australia and see this, okay? So that should not happen between husband and wife. So you can box through the hands and legs, or through the words, or through thinking, or through behavior. This should be kept away. So that is the best medicine to understand and be part of it. The third fasting is for developing spirituality. And it is said, if the whole world fasts for one day, there will be no hunger in the world. That much food, what we call some part of the world, countries which are hungry, they will not be hungry. But who does this? Very rare people do this. So, fasting today on Hanumanjī’s day. I was thinking to talk about tratak and meditation, but it turned over to fasting. And one talks about fasting when one has eaten more. Because when your stomach is full, you think everyone’s stomach is full. And if you are hungry, you think everyone is hungry. So I ate a little bit too much today, and now I am talking about fasting. So we will stop fasting, okay? So the best is God’s name. That makes you happy. That makes you divine. Name of the God, spiritual tonic. That is the strength of our body, mind, and spirit. So, it is said: Meri keemat jagi, ākhiyāṁ satguru charaṇo meṁ lagī. Chetanā hoyā svarūpa me, jagā nindā avidyā bhāgī, ākhiyāṁ satguru charaṇ me lagī. Ākhiyā sattagū charano me lāgī, charan dekhe bīnā chen naī āve. Palak na hove āgī, ākhiyā Satguru charano me lāgī. Dīpadāyālu ke charan kāmal me, merī kismat jagī ākhiyā sattguru-charano me lāgī. Anāhād ānanda-prakat vāyokṣe, sādā rekhet anurāgī, sattva-gurucāraṇo mehlā. Jai Bhagavān Deep Nārāyaṇ. Śrī Pūj Jai Bhagavān Deep Nārāyaṇ. Kar Diyā Barbhāgī, Kar Diyā Barbhāgī, Khiya Sath Charan Mehlagi. Śimādhāva nandhikāya prabhucārāno me, śimādhāva nandhikāya prabhucārāno me. Thank you for watching this video.
