The Seed of Practice

Faithful practice is the seed of attainment. Humans suffer greatly from their relationships and have abused nature beyond even animals, becoming the most developed yet most troubled creature. Intellectual knowledge alone is insufficient; devoted practice is essential. A story illustrates this: two brothers pursued different paths—one intellectual knowledge, the other devotional practice. The intellectual brother criticized the devotee's ritual errors. Later, seeing the devotee walk on water through pure faith, the intellectual realized his own knowledge was hollow. He was told the key is a pure heart in practice, not perfect technique, just as a seed grows regardless of how it is sown if the soil is good. Do not waste time in deliberation; practice faithfully with what you have.

"Too much reading also leads you nowhere. It’s only intellectual information. Therefore, practicing is very important."

"When you will pray with a pure heart, a good heart, if your mantra is pronounced correctly or incorrectly... The fruits will be there."

Be faithful to yourself and practice. It is a practice which will lead you to what you want. It is our thoughts, our interest, and concentrated work that will lead us to our destination. So we should know the aim of our being here, the aim of our life, the sense of human life, the meaning of human life. All relations which we have are tempered, and we are suffering for every relation. That’s what the humans are suffering today, very much. Humans went too far in abusing nature. People have gone too far in using nature. Even animals don’t do that. So those humans who are abusing nature, even they are worse than animals. We know the human is the most developed creature, but the most unhappy, the most troublesome, the most suffering, the most ill, the most restless is the human. But at the same time, man is the most unhappy, the most poor, and has the most problems. That’s why you have to be merciful to yourself. That’s why you practice. Your life passes without the name of God. But at least now, remember God. Too much reading also leads you nowhere. It’s only intellectual information. Therefore, practicing is very important. That is why practice is so important. Practice, practice, practice. There is one story. There were two brothers, and both became sādhus. One was on the way of bhakti yoga, and one went to the jñāna yoga. Bhakti yoga is more devotion and practice. And jñāna yoga is more intellectual training. One day, one of the brothers, who was a jñāna yogī, came to visit his other brother, who was a bhakti yogī. He was living in one temple, a small Śiva temple, and when his elder brother, who was a Jñāna Yogī, came to visit him, the younger brother was making some pūjā to Śiva. So the elder brother, the Jñāna Yogī, he was very angry. After pūjā, the Jñāna Yogī said to the Bhakti Yogī, "Bhakti, you sang the whole prayer so wrong. Mantras you are chanting wrong. Everything you are doing is not good. Grammar is missing. Grammar." So he said, "Okay, then please teach me." So he taught some mantras, how to do a little pūjā. They were two days together. The younger brother tried to learn by heart very much. And the elder brother, Jñānī Yogī, said, "I am going now. God knows when we will see again. But only, I tell you, learn something. Study something. Only sitting, meditating, and praying will not help you." So he went to his brother, to say goodbye. And his brother stepped into the ferry to cross the river. The older brother sat on a boat to cross the river, and he went away. The younger one sat on the bank of the river and tried to remember these mantras. In the meantime, the older one came to the other bank of the river. He was waving to his brother. Meanwhile, the bhakti yogī, the younger brother, he forgot some mantra, some part of the mantra. So he remembered, the brother said, "God knows when we will see again." So he thought, better to ask him now. So the bhakti yogī, the younger brother, ran over the water, walking on the water, quickly. The other one was putting his hand over his mouth and said, "God, what is he doing?" The other one came and said, "Brother, I forgot one mantra." The other brother touched the feet of the younger one and said, "Now you don’t need any mantras. You don’t need any grammar." He said, "Now I realize that all I was reading, I was reading only in an intellectual way, and I’m not able to do that thing. Which technique did you use that you can walk on the water?" He said, "What? I walked on the water? I thought it was just ground." He said, "Let’s go back." So he held the hand of his brother. And the brother said, "Are you sure that I will not go under the water?" "As long as you have touched my shoulder or my hand, you will not go down. But as long as you get away, you will go down. Have you even got it?" So, in the middle of the river, the brother of the Jñāna Yogī wanted to make an experiment. This is the intellect, you know. It doesn’t matter what you tell, there is always a "but," always a "why," always a "how." So he took his hand away from the brother’s altar, he let go of his brother, and the same thing happened to him. The brother helped him, and we met while he was drawn by the stream of the water. The brother took his meditation shawl, holding one side, and he threw it to him on the other side so he could catch it. As soon as he touched the shawl, he came above the water again. Both of them walked over the water. Now, still the Jñāna Yogī is talking to the Bhakti Yogī. "How is that? You are doing, and I can’t do. You don’t know how to pray, you don’t know how to chant mantras, you don’t know how to sing. You don’t know how to sing mantras, how to pray. You don’t know how to sing, you don’t know how to pray. You don’t know how to sing, you don’t know how to sing, you don’t know how to pray, you don’t know how to sing, you don’t know how to. Sing, you don’t know how to pray, you don’t know how to sing, you don’t know how to sing, you don’t know how to pray, you don’t know how to sing, you don’t know how to sing, you don’t know how to pray, you don’t know how to sing, you don’t know how. To sing, you don’t know how to pray, you don’t know how to sing, you don’t know how to sing, you don’t know how to pray, you don’t know how to sing, you don’t know how to sing, you don’t know how to sing, you don’t know how to sing, you don’t. Know how to sing? You don’t know how to sing? You ask this farmer, who didn’t study at all. He will give you an answer." So he went to the farmer to get an answer. So, farmer, he went to the farmer and said, "I am this and this person. This and these titles, and I want to solve one problem. If you can tell me, I studied many, many years. I’m academic, and my brother did nothing. He’s only doing some pūjā to Śiva, and that’s all. And he’s doing also very wrong. Mantra is wrong. You see, Patañjali said like this, and then the Bhagavad Gītā said like that, and then, you know, Kṛṣṇa said like this, and then that philosophy, this and that, Sāṅkhya philosophy, this. I can’t understand." The farmer said, "Well, you study so much, but you didn’t study farmer philosophy." He said, "How is that?" He said, "Very simple." "Then explain to me in a very short sentence, in one word." So the farmer said, "It doesn’t matter how you throw the seed in the earth, it will grow. If you put it right side or wrong side, or the side where the seed will grow. It should be good soil and good season." And he said, "Explain me, I don’t understand this. What is the connection with the seeds and philosophy? Walking over the water?" He said, "My dear, you study nothing. You study, but you didn’t practice your study. When you will pray with a pure heart, a good heart, if your mantra is pronounced correctly or incorrectly... The fruits will be there. God is more happy to them, those who are doing with a pure heart, not only with a pure intellect. Like when children begin to speak their first sentence or their first few words, parents are very happy." So practice is very important. While standing, you can think that now you crossed 5 km, and now you crossed 10 km, and now you crossed 20 km, but you are still standing there, you didn’t cross, you are only thinking. But if you walk, you will come there. So wise men will say, "Don’t waste the time." Should I take this, or should I take this, or should I practice this, or should I believe this? Don’t waste your time in this and that. I was teaching yoga for 20 years during the communist regime. In your countries. And you know you had a Mahā Mantra that time? Whatever you find in the market, take it. You don’t know if tomorrow will be there. She said, "Whatever you have, take it. That’s all." So, don’t run here and there. Whatever you have, any master, any god, any saint, what you believe is good, practice now. That’s very important, faithfully. Every technique is good, every master is good, every incarnation is good. Who is not good is ourself. Every technique, every teacher, every incarnation is good. We are the only ones who can be bad. We always say this, only this, only this. Do not waste time. Practice, practice.
