Christmas Satsang with Swamiji, Vienna, Austria

In this Kali Yuga, satsaṅg is rare, and many great gurus are passing away. Successors are hard to find due to materialism’s influence. A sadhu possesses equal vision and lives simply, always an aspirant. The great never proclaim their greatness; a diamond does not speak its value. Humble branches bend with fruit; the cactus keeps its fruit high with thorns. Humility leads to greatness; pride causes loss. Quality is needed, not quantity. Saṅgmitrā renounced her beauty with acid so people would follow Buddha’s teaching, not her face. Such dedication is necessary to bring the divine message. Christmas reminds of Jesus’ hard path and love for all creatures. The original message was non-violence; animals were part of the peaceful scene. A wish is expressed that saints come again, perhaps from among those present. Without true love in the heart, one cannot become that, whether in worldly life or renunciation. Satsaṅg is rare; bad company is abundant. Fortunate are those seeking satsaṅg; unfortunate those seeking kusaṅga. May spiritual energy grow and steps be taken towards self-realization.

“Bade baḍā na kare, baḍā na bole bol, Rahīmana hīrā kaba kahe lākha hamārā mola.”

“Sāc binā sudhare nahī̃ ādam raso anīk, cāhī tum grast meṁ raho, cāhī peṇo bhīk.”

Filming location: Vienna, Austria

It is beautiful. You may stand before everyone and announce that this is for them—that it is for all now, and that you may take it with you outside. Yes, but please ensure that no one takes it without permission. Or you may take it as prasāda. That would be quite good; then I will place it in front. Yes, or someone could go around and give everyone a piece. Ādi Om. How are you? Are you all right? Yes, I am fine. That’s good. Ādi Om. Ādi Om. I have come to meet you. You have come to meet me. Yes, I have come to meet you. My daughter, please come into your hands. Please come in your hands. Please come in your hands. Nice photos. What is your daughter’s name? Jasmine. Jasmine. Over the bridge and over the railway. Is it clear now? Okay. Thank you for helping. Good. Okay. Good. Okay. Are there any questions? Because if you want to go there with your car, please go to the reception. Someone will help you, okay? Okay, yes? Okay, if someone doesn’t know how to get there, please go to the reception; it will help them to get there by car. Yes, I hope so. Please, all of you who parked in those streets—it is a little bit wrong to go to the parking. There is a special parking that is organized on the other side of the lane. And how to get there, I will explain to you at the reception. It is not right to park your car in these streets. Thank you. For those who do not understand English or German, park your car at the parking lot close to the petrol pump behind the bridge. Do not park your car here. If you do not have your car parked there, ask the receptionist. If you do not know, they will advise you. It may happen that your car will be taken away. So, dear Muktamani will support me in the translation into English. Thank you. Muktamani will help me to translate, because it’s not easy for me to speak and translate in my mind. Okay, yes, she will translate, okay. Swamiji, dear yoga friends, Christmas is here, and again we have the opportunity to have satsaṅg together with Swamiji and all of you. A year has passed by with many experiences. Swamiji was traveling a lot, and especially since he came back last year, I have the feeling that it was endless, the time. Swamiji, the last days he was in St. Pölten and in Linz and in Salzburg, and now we are very happy that you gave us the opportunity to have satsaṅg with you before you leave Vienna again for India. We would like to say a big thank you to all the Karma Yogīs, all the Karma Yogīs coming from Vienna, and all the Karma Yogīs who helped from our neighboring countries. Also, all the Karma Yogīs who worked in all the projects close to Vienna, especially Umāpurī and Annapūrṇā. They gave many opportunities for Swamiji to go to their programs so that many people could see him. We have prepared a little giveaway, a little present, small calendars, and please, two or three karma yogīs, please come and help to distribute the little presents. Very good. Thank you. They will see everybody. No problem. We have another news. There is a little booklet which is made by the Shiva Mandir Project, and it is a story about a sheep. Swamijī was telling this story very often, and this is available, correct? Ah, it is the story about the tiger who was taking the sheep, yes. But is it free? It is for free, but it’s outside, and we give a donation, yes. It is free and for a small donation available outside. And what I may briefly tell you about it, the story is so beautiful and so well told and so deep, so as Swāmījī has often told us stories that really touch the heart very deeply, so the story is also written in it. I can really only put it very close to everyone’s heart, to take one with you, not only for the children, but also for yourself. This story is so nice and deeply touching. The heart, that I can only suggest to take it, and everybody should have one of these booklets because it is a very deep, touching jewel. Yes, last but not least, what I would like to share with you is a wonderful Christmas party, to have satsaṅg here today with our yoga family, with Swāmījī, to hear his wise words and also to take a little bit into the heart of what Christmas stands for. It is actually the birth of Christ that is celebrated on this day, on the 24th. It remains to say that we are all happy to have a Christmas satsaṅg with you, the whole yoga family, together with Swāmījī. And we should also remember the reason why we celebrate this. It is the feast of Jesus Christ, the birth of Jesus Christ, and we know he was standing for love. Without his love, maybe the world would be looking different today than it is now. We would like to wish you all a very happy time now, and when you go home later, please take care and come back home safe. Thank you for coming. I am looking forward to seeing you next year when we have satsaṅg in February. Śiva, sorry, March, March, yes. Mahāprabhujī Karatā Mahāprabhujī Karatā Mahāprabhujī Karatā… We are now seeing a film that Swamijī spontaneously wanted to make in the summer, namely how he appreciates Vienna and what beauties and what benefits Vienna also shows. And it is with Swāmījī filming, we then used his free days so sporadically and were then on the road, and mostly without a tripod, I have to say. And it shouldn’t be longer than a quarter of an hour, it’s barely not, and yes, it is now so that not everything is so inside. It is also a different music used; it is not the conventional bhajan music, but it is more instrumental music, many of us here know some melodies, not? It was, in any case, quite pleasant to work with Swāmījī, if also partly a little bit. [Film segment spoken by Swāmījī:] Purījī, Purījī… You know that everywhere I come in the world, the first thing I do is plant a peace tree, a symbol of peace, a symbol of ecology, and the protection of the environment, and I call that the politics without borders for a peaceful world. So this is a tree I planted with the authority, the park authority, and the district mayor of the third district of Vienna, Austria. The peace tree dedicated to the third district, the Carl Honner Paramahaṃswami Maheśvarānanda, 18th of November 2005, and the tree has grown beautifully. It reminds us of peace and harmony. Beautiful tree, and taken care of by the park authority of Vienna. Let’s go. And very up on the top is the Garuḍa from God Viṣṇu. And on this side, you can also see Garuḍa looking, and then Śakti with many hands and all weapons, you know. You see the Śakti, the Kālī with all the weapons. So you can see the Garuḍa from God Viṣṇu. And you see, all these weapons of Rāma and Viṣṇu are connected. So, now you can see that Austrian culture, the ancient, with Greece and then to Egypt and India, you know, how it was connected. Chalo, come on. One of the best and longest rivers in Europe. And this is the Millennium Tower. Yes, this is the Donau Tower. Now we are going to the tower. Thank you. So now we are under one of the highest towers in Vienna, the Danube Tower. It was constructed in 1964. You see the beautiful view over the Danube. And the Danube is divided into two parts. It’s like in yoga, Iḍā and Piṅgalā. These two nāḍīs, these two horses are here. This side is one called Karnberg, Leopold’s Park, which is a castle shop, and it’s all new over Vienna, and when we go this side, the airport and the United Nations. This is the house where I first came to Vienna. This is the house where I first came to Vienna on the first day, and I stayed here. There was a yoga center, and they divided the room, and I stayed in this house for two years. Then I went to India. I came back. Again we rented this room. So this is the Komodian Gase, number 3, in district 3. Shikha Nedar Gase, Vachanko, Yoga in Dead Life, yes, Hari Om. Now we are in Mahāprabhujī’s ashram, and you know this ashram is also more than 30 years, and divine light of Mahāprabhujī’s morning, day. And night since this ashram was established, thousands of bhaktas have learned yoga in their lives here and went on their spiritual paths further. So you are all welcome to be in Mahāprabhujī’s āśram in Śikāneḍā Gāse. Shikaneda was the rider of the magic flute, also a very historical name of this street. Hello, beautiful water. One of the famous rivers of Europe is passing through half of Europe, and it has a lot of benefits for every town, especially for Vienna. Many tourists come to enjoy the people and you. Jaina has chosen me to be here. Well, I was not elected; I was selected. So, of course, I’m happy to be here. And you will find in Austria people with a heart also, of course. But when you once come to know the Austrians, then you can feel that yes, you have to be in their heart. And you can be in their heart only with simplicity, not ego, not pride. Mahāprabhujīp Karatā Mahāprabhujīp Karatā He Kevalam So, that’s all. Peter, thank you. I was still young. Sehr schön. [End of film] We can do it like this. Anybody want to say something? Yes? That’s Komtnag here. It’s like feeling a commode in. Feeling a commode. Viśākhaman? Commode. Many theaters in many places. So I think I will speak in English again because, more or less, all of our Austrians and Germans speak English, and for those who do not speak English, it is a good chance, an occasion to learn English now while I speak. So, thank you. And I need you to come in; you must sit in the door, sit in. Dankeśan. Deep Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān Kī, Deveśvara Mahādeva Kī, Dharma Samrāṭ Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandajī Bhagavān Kī, Satya Sanātana Dharma Kī. Hoy, it is Vidyānā Bhūndraśidāntak. Thank you very much that we can all be together here in Gurujī’s Āśram, and especially I would like to thank the Viennese and the environment of Viennese, the ālābhaktas and the organizers, that always prepare nice programs here, and we are happy that we have a great space here to invite our ālābhaktas from various countries. Chodanke, that today is one of the best days again, that we are together here. Welcome all, and thanks to all our Austrian Bhaktas and organizers, especially from Vienna and the suburbs of Vienna, who, with short notice, perfectly organized this event in Gurujī’s Āśram. Satsaṅg. In this Kali Yuga, in this Kali Yuga time, it is even rare for the Devas or the Goddesses to have a satsaṅg. Yesterday, I was in Linz and Salzburg, as you know, and we were talking; a few people were sitting together, and we spoke about a sādhu, an American sādhu, the successor of Paramahaṁsa Yogānanda. Her name was Dayā Māta, and about two weeks ago she passed away. Well, one day we have to go. Ātmā is immortal, Ātmā is eternal, Ātmā is everywhere. No weapons can destroy the ātmā, no elements can destroy it, and death cannot take it away. But the body, which is made out of five elements, will pass away; the elements will also merge into their origin. But the question was this: in the last few years, many spiritual masters, so-called gurus, passed away. It means slowly, slowly, in this Kali Yuga, even these great masters are also going back. It’s very hard to find successors. In every religion, it doesn’t matter which religion, it is very hard to find some good spiritual leaders or successors. And this is the influence of the Kali Yuga, the influence of materialism. It’s a pity; it’s a great pity. You cannot become a spiritual master, Satguru, unless you have renounced your inner feelings, unless you have renounced your selflessness or selfishness. Śādho means samadarśī, Śādho means sādhu. Samadarśī means equal vision, sādhu means simple life, sādhaka bhāva, always having thoughts of being a practitioner, an aspirant. Bade baḍā na kare, baḍā na bole bol, Rahīmana hīrā kaba kahe lākha hamārā mola. The great one will never speak about himself or herself, saying, “I am great.” And a diamond will never tell that I am a diamond and I am a very precious stone. But we will decide it is a diamond, and we say, “Yes, that is a great person.” When a beautiful apple tree, a cherry tree, or a plum tree gets fruit and the fruit ripens, the branches bow down. They come closer to us so that it is easy for us to reach them. But when the cactus grows and gets fruits high up, or the dates, the dates, similarly, if a person is like a cactus, having thorns inside, the thorns of the ego, pride, conflict, greed, anger, then no one can reach the heart of that person. But as humble you become, that much you are surrendering. Lagutā se prabhutā mele, prabhutā se prabhutā dūr, kīḍī sakkara khā gaī, hāthī ke mūṁha dhūla. As humble you are, you get greatness. As proud as you are, you lose everything. You get nothing. A little ant could take a piece of sugar from the sand. The elephant tried to take the little grains of sugar from the sand, and got all the dust in his trunk. So Brahma Jñānī, Brahmaniṣṭha Śrotriya, Satguru, is slowly, slowly withdrawing themselves. And you know, like every parent expecting to have a good child. And actually, those who marry and have children are continuing the dynasty. Similarly, a Satguru, a master, is searching for that quality, that disciple who will carry the light of the master and follow the footprint of the master. You cannot follow, you cannot carry that light if you have no dedication. To whom? To the world, to the people. You have to renounce. Buddha had a very close disciple, Samrat Aśoka. And it is said, Aśoka Samrāṭ Emperor. Samrāṭ means emperor. And Asoka had only one daughter, they said, who was more dedicated to spirituality. Her name was Saṅg Mitrā. Time came when the Samrāṭ Aśoka was very ill, very old, and it seemed that now he would pass away. Part 2: Quality Over Quantity: The Story of Saṅgmitrā and a Call for True Saints And many people were waiting to seize his kingdom, to become king, to take his crown. But still, he did not give up his life. And no one asked him if he had any wish or anything. His daughter, only his daughter, Saṅgmitrā, came and said, “Father, it seems your body is no longer capable or strong enough. You are only experiencing pain and suffering in this body. Father, bring the teaching of the Buddha to the world.” “But my daughter, you will marry; you must go to your husband’s house. So it is said, you are the property of others.” She said, “Father, I take the vow and promise you that this property will be yours; I will not marry. And I will bring the message of my beloved father, who took the vow to bring the message of his divine master.” Father blessed her and passed away. Then she moved towards the Himalayas, she moved towards China, and began to bring the Buddhist teachings, Buddha’s message. She was a beautiful girl, a very beautiful young girl, and she was talking so wisely, with beautiful, divine words. Thousands of people were coming to listen to her, but none of them were following her. That means no one was accepting the teachings of the Buddha. One day, she asked her secretary, “So many people are coming and sitting and listening peacefully, being silent. But no one is accepting the Buddha’s teaching. Research, what is missing?” After five days, he said, “I am sorry to tell you. People are coming to see your beauty. Like you go to the nightclub to see the girls or boys who are dancing there, no? Because you have enough from your family.” So she said, “It’s my beauty that is the obstacle to fulfilling my wish and my father’s wish?” He said yes. Okay. She ordered acid, and she threw the acid on her face. Her whole face was burning. Her face became somehow not so beautiful. There were many scars there, but that was the greatest renunciation or dedication from her side, and people began to follow her. That’s how she was the one who brought the message to the Far East, China, and further to Japan, and so it is her work which brought the Buddha’s teaching. We don’t need quantity. We need quality. And quality, you have to become one. You have to be the piece of that diamond. You have to become the egg of that peacock, which is colorful. And so, when some divine soul comes, it will change the times again. We all try, we are all full of anger, jealousy, hate, greed, passion, desires, longing—everything. How do we imagine that we bring the divine message of those great saints, great ṛṣis who performed tapasyā thousands of years ago? You know, the great sage Viśvāmitra, he was making tapasyā for 65,000 years, 70,000 years. And now the modern writers, and they are saying Indian civilization and culture is about 1,300 years old, 2,000 years old. They don’t know anything about yugas. They don’t know anything about Vedas. They don’t know anything about ṛṣis. This is the pity. This is what it means: people have lost the knowledge. People have no strength, no tapasya, no endurance to do the sādhanā and search for the divine through meditation. Recently, someone wrote, it was on the magazine’s front cover, “Scientists are looking for God, but they didn’t find Him.” They should come to me. They need not spend billions of dollars to go somewhere else. So, to bring that divine message, you need dedication. This is the time of Christmas, and look back at Jesus’ life, how hard it was. He had his qualities, he had his personal wishes and desires too, and sometimes he was angry, happy, unhappy, and praying, “Father, why me?” Because I trust my child, I trust you. My devotee, I trust that you will be that one. And look, one person, one person like Jesus, covering his preachings, the whole globe. One Kṛṣṇa. There is no second Krishna. Influencing the entire universe are one Rāma, one prophet, Mohammed. What title did he have? Which university did he attend? But even the scientists and people who have high educations are surrendering there; they are bowing their heads there. See the Mahāprabhujīs. In their words, in the vākyas, was the truth, that love, that dedication, that renunciation. It’s not that they were always so beautifully decorated and sitting on the altar like this, you know. It was a hard life, too, a hard life. So if you have to become such a model from a raw piece of stone, then you have to go to the master, who will take in hand the hammers and tools and will form you. We hope, though it is a Kalyuga, that some masters will come. We need some masters. The problem is that many become sādhus because they have had enough of their life. They have a lot of debt from the banks and so on, so they run away. And they have five or six children, they don’t know how to get them married, so they just go away and sit somewhere, save everything and sit on it. Oh, nobody knows who that is. That’s it. So one is escaping, running away, and one is born for that. Mīrā dāsī janam janam kī Hari tumhāre sāth. That is a janam janam kā nātā, the relation of many, many lives. And that is, maybe some sense will come again. Try, try. And that should begin from the beginning. In between is very hard, okay? We can talk, we can learn to speak. We can study the śāstras. We can study the science and medicines and all that. We can try to imitate. But that quality, the original quality, is not there. That glass pot is broken. That bell is cracked. It has no resonance. And so, I wish—if I can have a wish this year, at Christmas time—that some great saints should come into this world as soon as possible. That can be your child, who knows? It could be from you, someone. But do not become sadhus because you are fed up with life, and you do not know what to do, and you have no work. Kṛṣṇapurī, no? Like that. We need? Doesn’t matter. Ten is enough. One is enough. Two is enough. Three is enough. Every country has one. That would be the best. The great saint Swami Śivānanda from Ṛṣikeś, he had few disciples, was equalities. And there were many other sādhus, but now he is missing. Sometimes I am thinking, and not as sad, but I am thinking he is a pity. Gurujī, pity for humans, pity for us all who are left behind. Now what we need is to support, support Gurudev’s work, unite, don’t divide. It’s not easy. Nowadays you have to go behind the disciples. There was a time the disciples had to go behind the master. So even disciples are still fighting, you have to come and calm them down. Now, how many of you are sitting here? It was not an easy job to bring you here under this roof. And how many of you are in doubt still, and how many of you are fighting and looking? Why is he sitting in the front? Swamiji spoke two words to the person who was making praṇāms. I went, and he was just... you know, doubts. The human mind is so complicated. So we search, we pray that saints will come. And that can be you; it can be the parents of that one. It is many, many lives of tapasyā for the parents. But not such parents, married and divorced, married and divorced, and find a girlfriend and didn’t like this, and find a boyfriend and didn’t like that. That is finished. That is not anymore. That is fast food, junk food. Mother, father, parents, Mātā Pitā Kī Tapasyā. Therefore, it is said, first of all, be bowed down to that mother and that father. Unconsciously, when something happens, you say suddenly, “What do you say? Yes, it’s Maria.” When something happens, you say, “Yes, it’s Maria.” Look, Maria, Mother Maria, what do you say? She is completely one with us. Where is such a mother? I am searching. Paraṁbar, vandan, adoration to that mother and that father. So this Christmas, my wish is that divine children will come or someone will follow this path and not be attracted to these temptations, Kali Yuga’s temptations. And it’s not late. You can. You can also do it. Don’t think that your chance is gone. No. You still have a chance. As long as I am sitting, I have a certificate to sign it. But I try. You are not capable. Upar se bhare, nīche se jhare, Gurū Mahārāj kyā kare? (Filled from above, it leaks from below; what can Gurū Mahārāj do?) Upar se bhare, I’m pouring on top of the pot, but down is broken, dripping out down. What should I do? What can Gurudev do? Every step, we change our thoughts and our feelings. Tapasyā surrounds everything; you will find it. Great ṛṣis dedicated themselves; they had children and all, and afterward gave them knowledge and everything. And then you went to tapasyā, became a very great, very great. So, “Sāc binā sudhare nahī̃ ādam raso anīk, cāhī tum grast meṁ raho, cāhī peṇo bhīk.” Without that true love in the heart, you cannot become that one. It doesn’t matter if you take some uniform or not uniform. Christmas time should remind us that we love all creatures, every entity. You see that they are showing sometimes pictures of a cradle, baby Jesus, and there is also a donkey standing, there is a cow also, there is a goat also, you know. Showing how animals are also happy and looking at this baby. And now you cut them, kill them, and you eat them, these animals. That is what Jesus didn’t want. We manipulated everything, we changed everything. Means we are looking for the original. Phūl jo caḍhānā thā, vo phūl maiṁ ḍhūṇḍ na pāyā. O Lord, the flower which I want to dedicate to you, I couldn’t find that flower. I searched shore to shore and door to door, but I didn’t find that flower which I wanted. Then finally, it is said, maybe, O Lord, it was my mistake that I couldn’t find. And that flower means your love. That flower is your devotion. That flower is your dedication. That flower is your heart. Therefore, satsaṅg is rare in Kali Yuga. Bad company is abundant. So it is said, fortunate are they who are only searching for satsaṅg, and unfortunate, unlucky are they who are searching for kuṣaṅga, to go to kuṣaṅga. This kusaṅga has destroyed all the environment in the world. So we are thinking of the yugas, Satyugas, Tretā Yugas, Dvāpara Yugas, and we are just in the stream of the river which is flowing. Let’s see what will come, what will happen. We are changing the dates on our calendars. I also got a calendar today, thank you. I got a present from the Vienna Ashram. Yes, very good. The new year begins on Monday. Oh, Saturday, very good, very nice. Saturday, Saturn, we should eat more oil, yes, on that day, and hold the iron, yes, Eisen. I don’t want to go in this direction. Now, the calendar is nice. We don’t need to do anything else, only one thing: yoga and daily life, harmony for body, mind, and soul. That’s nice. Keep it in your, this pocket. Not this one. That’s empty. What is this side? Heart. Keep it in the heart. I wish you a very happy, very, very happy, very healthy, harmonious, peaceful, loving, successful, and prosperous new year. That you will practice more, make more positive saṅkalpa, and that your spiritual energy will grow, spirituality will improve, that you make steps towards spirituality and towards God, ātmā jñāna, self-realization. Every festival of the world reminds us of something beautiful. There is one bhajan, a beautiful bhajan. But wherever a holy saint lived or is living, that becomes a holy place, a pilgrim place. Guru caraṇome ad sattirathe. Sixty-eight holy places, there are many millions and thousands, but many are sixty-eight, and there, where the great saints were living. So that is the festival in their name. And those humans who can dedicate, renounce, and get that divine consciousness can lead others. Mahāprabhujī said in his bhajan, Guru bhakta jagat meṁ rahe, guru bhakta jagat meṁ rahe. Dīpa Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān kī. The devotee of the Gurudev who follows the path of truth—they are real humans. Others have the body of a human, but their qualities are different. So, I wish you a very divine time, a very blessed evening, a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year. Blessings for your families, your friends, your villages, and your countries. Swamiji.tv, or come there. Best is you come there. That is the best. Who knows how many satsaṅgs we will have together? Who knows? How many times will we be in the divine, holy country India and in ashrams? But, of course, there are family obligations and so on. But this depends on the people from Novi Sad, ex-Yugoslavian Serbians. They are governing and manipulating the entire webcast. So, I already told them, now, before today is the 19th, 20th... 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th. Six days before, I am telling them. If they are normal people and listening to Guru Vakya, they will do their best to have a webcast. It doesn’t matter which kind of instrument they have to bring. I wish very much that on this Christmas they are punctually beginning and showing all programs, and everyday new programs on the webcast. It doesn’t matter from which ashram, which āsanas, or even prāṇāyāms, but everyday something new. This is our, all of our, Christmas wish, no? There were three people who said yes. Okay. Doesn’t matter, even if they are home, they can show their altar and make prayer, that’s enough. But every day, ten minutes, one hour, half an hour, something new. Yes, once more, all the best and much love. And now we have for children who are here, all little children, meaning under 15 years.
