Christmas Satsang with Swamiji, Vienna, Austria

The Ātmā is immortal and eternal, but the body made of five elements will pass away. In this Kali Yuga, true spiritual masters are becoming rare, as materialism influences all religions. A genuine master has renounced selfishness and possesses equal vision and a simple life. Humility brings one closer to others, while pride and inner thorns like ego create distance. True dedication requires profound renunciation, as shown by those who carried the divine message forward. We need quality, not quantity, in spirituality. This Christmas, remember the original message of love and dedication. Current temptations and a lack of tapasyā cause people to lose the true knowledge. Satsaṅg is precious in this age.

"You cannot become a spiritual master, Satguru, unless you have renounced your inner feelings. Unless you have renounced your selflessness or selfishness."

"As humble you become, that much you are surrendering. As humble you are, you get greatness. As proud you are, you lose everything."

Filming location: Vienna, Austria

I have now got a reinforcement for the simultaneous translation. I noticed before that it did not work well. So, dear Muktamani will support me in the translation into English. Thank you. Muktamani will help me to translate, because it is not easy for me to speak and translate in my mind. Okay, yes, she will translate. Praṇām Swāmījī, dear yoga friends, it is already time; we have Christmas, and we again have the opportunity to have a Christmas session here in Gurujī’s Āśrama with our dear yoga master Swāmījī. Praṇām Swāmījī, dear yoga friends, Christmas is here, and again we have the opportunity to have satsaṅg together with Swāmījī and all of you. A year has passed by with many experiences. Swāmījī was traveling a lot, and especially since he came back last year, I have the feeling that it was endless, the time. Yesterday, Swāmījī was in the last days; he was in St. [incomplete]. And now we are very happy that you gave us the opportunity to have satsaṅg with you before you leave Vienna again for India. We would like to say a big thank you to all of you who have helped us with this project. Karma Yogīs from Austria, Karma Yogīs from abroad—I could name many names. Maybe the surrounding area, especially our Umāpurī, took care of many events. Our Annapūrṇā took care of many events so that it was possible to have events outside of Vienna, so that also the students outside of Vienna had the opportunity to see Swāmījī. We would like to say a big thank you to all the karma yogīs, all the karma yogīs coming from Vienna, and all the karma yogīs who helped from our neighbor countries. Also, all the karma yogīs who worked in all the projects close to Vienna, especially Umāpurī and Annapūrṇā. They gave many opportunities for Swāmījī to go to their programs so that many people could see him. We have prepared a little giveaway, a little present: small calendars. Please, two or three karma yogīs, come and help to distribute the little presents. Very good, thank you. They will see everybody, no problem. We have another news. It is a little booklet which is made by the Śiva Mandir project, and it is a story about a sheep. Swāmījī was telling this story very often, and this is available, correct? Ah, it is the story about the tiger who was taking the sheep, yes. But is it free? Yeah, it is for free, but with, yeah, it’s outside, and give a donation, yes. Also, it is free and available outside for a small donation. This story is so nice and deeply touching to the heart, that I can only suggest to take it, and everybody should have one of these booklets because it is a very deeply touching jewel. Yes, last but not least, what I would like to share with you is a wonderful Christmas festival. To have satsaṅg here today with our yoga family, with Swāmījī, to hear his wise words and also to take a little bit into heart what Christmas stands for—that it is actually the birth of Christ that is celebrated on this day, on the 24th, and that Christ is... it remains to say that we are all happy, that we are happy to have a Christmas satsaṅg with you, the whole yoga family, and together with Swāmījī. And we should also remember the reason why we celebrate this. It is the feast of Jesus Christ, the birth of Jesus Christ, and we know he was standing for love. Without his love, maybe the world would have been, would be looking different today than it is now. We would like to wish you all a very happy time now, and when you go home later, please take care and come back home safe. Thank you for coming. I am looking forward to seeing you next year when we have a satsaṅg in February, Śiva, sorry, March, March, yes, in March. Yeah, Hari Om. (A film is introduced:) This is the first time in the film, "Power of the Satsaṅg." A few words in advance. We are now seeing a film that Swāmījī wanted spontaneously in the summer. Namely, how he appreciates Vienna and what beauties and what benefits Vienna shows today. And it is with two people filming. We then used his free days so sporadically, and we were then on the road, and sometimes without a tripod, I have to say. And it shouldn’t be longer than a quarter of an hour. It’s hardly that. And yes, it is now so that not everything is so inside. It is also a different music used. It is not the traditional bhajan music, but it is more instrumental music. Many of you may know some melodies. It was definitely quite pleasant to work with Swāmījī, if even partly a bit spontaneous. And yes, there is a little bonus clip behind it, which we shot this morning. And zwar, Swāmījī, snow, snow,... Swāmījī im Schnee. Viel Vergnügen. (Excerpts from the film's narration by Swāmījī:) For the tourists, everywhere I come in the world, the first thing I do is plant a peace tree. Symbol of peace, symbol of ecology, protection of the environment, and I call that the politics without borders for a peaceful world. So this is the tree I planted with the authority, the park authority, and the district mayor of the third district of Vienna, Austria. The peace tree dedicated to the third district, Karl Honner, Paramount, Swami, Mysore, on the 18th of November 2005, and the tree has grown beautifully. It reminds us of peace and harmony. Beautiful tree and taken care of by the park authority of D.N.S. And very up on the top is the Garuḍa from God Viṣṇu. And on this side, you can also see Garuḍa looking, and then Śakti with many hands and all weapons, you know. You see the Shakti, the Kālī with all the weapons. So you can see the Garuḍa from God Viṣṇu, and you see all these weapons of Rāma and Viṣṇu connected. So now you can see that Austrian culture, the ancient, with Greece, and then to Egypt and India, you know how it was connected. One of the best and longest rivers in Europe, and this is the Millennium Tower. Yes, this is the Donau Tower. Now we are going to the tower. Thank you. So now we are on one of the highest towers in Vienna, the Danube Tower. It was constructed in 1964. You see the beautiful view over the Danube. And the venue is divided into two parts. It’s like in yoga, Gītā and Piṅgalā. These two dāḍīs, these two horses are here. This side is one called Karnberg. Liverpool’s back, which is a castle, some. And it’s all view over Vienna. And when we go to this side, the airport and the United Nations. This is one of the points I try, try, and here, yeah. This is the house where I first came to Vienna on the first day, and I stayed here. There was a yoga center, and they divided the room, and I stayed in this house for two years. Then I went to India. I came back. Again we rented this room. So this is the Komodian Ghase, number 3, and District 3, Śikha Nedār Ghase. What’s your name? Yoga and Dead Life. Yes, Hari Om. Now we are in Mahāprabhujī’s ashram. And you know, this ashram is also more than 30 years old. And the divine light of Mahāprabhujī is burning day and night since this ashram was established. And thousands of bhaktas learned yoga in their life here and went on their spiritual path further. So you are all welcome to be in Mahāprabhujī’s ashram in Shikaneda Gase. Shikaneda was the writer of The Magic Flute, also a very historical name of this street. Know what it is? The beautiful water, and one of the famous rivers of Europe, is passing through. Half of Europe, and it has a lot of benefit for every town, and especially for Vienna. Many tourists come to enjoy the people, and you, Vienna, have chosen me to be here. Well, I was not elected; I was selected, so of course. I’m happy to be here, and you will find in Austria people with heart also, but when you once come to know the Austrians, then you can feel that yes, you have to be in their heart, and you can be. Their heart only be the simplicity, not ego, not proudness, but as simple you are, they will accept you with more kindness. This is what happens to you, and that’s, I think, so maybe I’m very arrogant still, but I think I can also, like, a little bit like me, so this is the beauty of the Vienna Woods. Every season is mighty, the seasons. What could be Vienna and Vienna Woods and Austria without snow? Every now and then, today’s minus 10 degrees, and all the snow is here. Very nice to walk, space, nice name. Snow, snow, snow. White snow. Beautiful. Ah, snow, snow, snow. Very nice. And snow is very fresh. Oh, something beautiful. And you children can play with the snowball like this. It’s cold. It’s frozen. You see? There’s only ice down. Ice. Yeah. Good, good. So, that’s all. Peter, thank you. Ich war doch jung. We can do it like this. (Swāmījī begins his address:) Anybody want to say something? Yes. Many theaters in many places. So I think I will speak in English again, because more or less all of our Austrians and Germans speak English, and for those who do not speak English, it’s a good chance, an occasion to learn English now when I speak. So thank you. Sati Sanātan Dharmakīrti. Today is another wonderful day that we can all be together here in Gurujī’s ashram, and especially I thank the Viennese and the environment of Vienna, the ālābachās and the organizers, that they always prepare nice programs here. And we think, for this, we have a great opportunity here to invite all our devotees from all over the world. So, thank you. Today is one of the best days again that we are together here. Welcome all. And thanks to all our Austrian devotees and organizers, especially from Vienna and the suburbs of Vienna, who, with short notice, perfectly organized these events in Gurujī’s ashram. In this Kali Yuga, in this Kali Yuga time, it is rare even for the Devas or the Goddesses to have a satsaṅg. Yesterday, I was in Linz and Salzburg, as you know, and we were talking. A few people were sitting together, and we spoke about some sādhu, an American sādhu, the successor of Paramahaṁsa Yogānanda. Her name was Dayā Māta, and about two weeks ago she passed away. Well, one day we have to go. Ātmā is immortal. Ātmā is eternal. Ātmā is everywhere. No weapons can destroy the ātmā, no elements can destroy it, and death cannot take it away. But the body, which is made out of five elements, will pass away. The elements will also merge into their origin. But the question was this: in the last few years, many spiritual masters, so-called gurus, passed away. It means slowly, slowly in this Kali Yuga, even these great masters are also going back. It’s very hard to find successors. In every religion, it doesn’t matter which religion, it’s very hard to find a good spiritual leader or successor. And this is the influence of the Kali Yuga, the influence of materialism. It’s a pity, it’s a great pity. You cannot become a spiritual master, Satguru, unless you have renounced your inner feelings. Unless you have renounced your selflessness or selfishness. Sādhu means samadarśī, sādhu means sādhā, samadarśī means equal vision, sādhā means simple life. Sādaka bhāva, always having thoughts of being a practitioner, an aspirant. Great ones will never speak about themselves, that "I am great." And diamonds will never tell that I am a diamond, and I am a very precious stone. But we are the ones who will decide it is a diamond, and we say, "Yes, that’s a great person." When a beautiful apple or a cherry tree or the plum tree gets fruits, and the fruits ripen, the branches are bowing down. They come closer to us, so it is easy for us to reach them. But when the cactus grows and gets fruits high up, or the dates, the dates. Similarly, if a person is like a cactus, having thorns inside—the thorns of the ego, proudness, conflict, greed, anger—then no one can reach the heart of that person. But as humble you become, that much you are surrendering. As humble you are, you get greatness. As proud you are, you lose everything, you get nothing. A little ant could take a piece of sugar from the sand. The elephant tried to take the little corn of sugar from the sand, and all the dust came into his trunk. So Brahma Jñānī, Brahmaniṣṭha Śrotriya, Satguru, is slowly, slowly withdrawing themselves. And you know, like every parent, expecting to have a good child. And actually, those who marry and have children are continuing the dynasty. Similarly, a Satguru, a master, is searching for that quality, that disciple which will carry the light of the masters and follow the footprints of the masters. You cannot follow, you cannot carry that light if you have no dedication. To whom? To the world, to the people. You have to renounce. Buddha had a very close disciple, Samrāṭ Aśoka. And it is said, Aśoka Samrāṭa Emperor. Part 2: The Quality of Dedication: A Christmas Reflection Samrāṭa means Emperor. Aśoka had only one daughter, they said, who was more dedicated to spirituality. Her name was Saṅgmitrā. A time came when the Samrāṭ Aśoka was very ill and very old, and it seemed he would pass away. Many people were waiting to take his kingdom, to become king, to take his crown. But still, he was not giving up his life. No one asked him if he had any wish or anything. Only his daughter, Saṅgmitrā, came and said, "Father, it seems that your body is not anymore capable or strong enough. You are only experiencing pain and suffering in this body. Father, what is your last wish?" He said, "My daughter, my last wish is to bring the teaching of the Buddha to the world." But my daughter, you will marry, you have to go to your husband’s house. So it means, it is said you are the property of others." She said, "Father, I take the vow and promise you that this property will be yours. I will not marry, and I will bring the message of my beloved father, who took the vow to bring the message of his divine master." Her father blessed her and passed away. Then she moved towards the Himālaya. She moved over to China and began to bring the Buddhist teachings, Buddha’s message. She was a beautiful girl, a very beautiful young girl, and talking so wisely, beautifully, divine words. Thousands of people were coming to listen to her, but none of them were following her. This means no one was accepting the teachings of the Buddha. One day she asked her secretary, "So many people are coming and they’re sitting and listening peacefully, being silent. But no one is accepting the Buddha’s teaching. What’s missing?" After five days, he said, "I’m sorry to tell you, people are coming to see your beauty." Like you go to the nightclub to see the girls or boys who are dancing there, no? Because you have enough from your family. So she said, "It’s my beauty, that is the obstacle to fulfill my wish and my father’s wish?" He said yes. Okay. She ordered the acid, and she threw the acid on her face. Her whole face was burning. Her face became somehow not so beautiful. There were so many scars there. But that was the greatest renunciation or dedication from her side. And people began to follow her. That’s how she was the one who brought the message to the Far East, China, and further to Japan. And so it is her work which brought the Buddha’s teaching. We don’t need quantity. We need quality. And for quality, you have to become one. You have to be a piece of that diamond. You have to become the egg of that peacock, which is colorful. And so, when some divine soul comes, it will change the times again. We all try, we are all full of anger, jealousy, hate, greed, passion, desires, longing, that everything. How do we imagine that we bring the divine message of those great saints? Great ṛṣis who made the tapasyā for thousands of years? You know, the great sage Viśvāmitra, he was making tapasyā for 65,000 years, 70,000 years. And now the modern writers, they are saying Indian civilization, culture is about 1,300 years old, 2,000 years old. They don’t know anything about yugas. They don’t know anything about Vedas. They don’t know anything about ṛṣis. This is the pity. This is what it means: people lost the knowledge. People have no strength, no tapasyā, no endurance to make the sādhanā and search for the divine through meditation. Recently, someone wrote—it was on the magazine’s front cover—"Scientists are looking for God, but they didn’t find Him." They should come to me. They need not spend billions of dollars to go somewhere else. So, to bring that divine message, you need dedication. This is the time of Christmas. And look back to Jesus’ life, how hard it was. He had his qualities, he had his personal wishes, desires too. And sometimes he was angry, happy, unhappy, and praying, "Father, why me?" Because I trust my child, I trust you. My devotee, I trust that you will be that one. And look, one person, one person, like Jesus, covering his preachings, the whole globe. One Krishna. There is no second Krishna. Influencing the entire universe are one Rāma, one prophet, Muḥammad. Which title did he have? Which university did he attend? But even the scientists and people who have high educations, they are surrendering there. They are bowing their heads there. See Mahāprabhujī’s. In their words, in the Vākyas, was the truth, that love, that dedication, that renunciation. It’s not that they were always so beautifully decorated and sitting on the altar like this, you know. It was a hard life, too hard a life. So, if you have to become such a model from a raw piece of stone, then you have to go to the master, and who will take in hand the hammers and tools and will form you? We hope, though it is a Kali Yuga, that some masters will come. We need some masters. The problem is that many become sādhus because they have had enough of their life. They have a lot of debt from the banks and so on, and they run away. And they have five, six children, they don’t know how to get them married, so they just go away and sit somewhere, save everything, and sit on it, oh, nobody knows who that is. That’s it. So one is escaping, running away, and one is born for that. Meera Dasi Janam Janam Ki Hari Tumare Saat. That is a janam janam kā nātā, the relation of many, many lives. And that is, maybe some sense will come again. Try, try. And that should begin from the beginning. Between is very hard. Okay, we can talk, we can learn to speak, we can study the śāstras, we can study the science and medicines and all that. We can try to imitate, but that quality, the original quality, is not there. That glass pot is broken. That bell is cracked, has no resonance. And so I wish, if I can have a wish in this year, Christmas time, then, some great saints should come into this world as soon as possible. That can be your child. Who knows? It can be from you, someone, but don’t become sādhus because you are fed up with life and you don’t know what to do, and you have no work. Krishnapuri, no, like that we need... it doesn’t matter. Ten is enough, one is enough, two is enough, three... every country has one, that will be the best. The great saint Swāmī Śivānanda from Ṛṣikeś. He had few disciples, which was equal, and there were many other sādhus, but now it’s missing. Sometimes I’m thinking, and not sad, but I’m thinking it’s a pity. Pity for humans, pity for us all who are left behind. Now, what we need is to support Gurudev’s work. Unite, don’t divide. It’s not easy. Nowadays, you have to go behind the disciples. There was a time when the disciples had to go behind the master. So even disciples are still fighting. You have to come and calm them down. Now, how many of you are sitting here? It was not an easy job to bring you here under this roof. And how many of you are still in doubt? And how many of you are fighting and looking? Why is he sitting in the front? Why did Swamijī speak two words to the person who was making praṇāms? I went, and he was just, you know, doubts. The human mind is so complicated, so we search, we pray, that sense will come, and that can be, you can be the parents of that one. It is a many, many lives tapasyā of the parents, but not such parents, married and divorced and married. And divorce, and combined a girlfriend and didn’t like this, and find a boyfriend, didn’t like that—that is finished. That is not anymore; that is fast food, junk food. Mother, father, parents, mātā pitā kī tapasyā. Therefore, it is said, first of all, we bow down to that mother and that father. Unconsciously, when something happens, you say suddenly, "Joseph, what did you say?" Jesus Maria. When something happened, he said, "Jesus Maria. Look, Maria, Mother Maria, what do you say?" She is completely one with us. Where is such a mother? I am searching. Baram bar, vandan, adoration to that mother and that father. So this Christmas, my wish is that divine children will come or someone will follow this path and not be attracted to this temptation, Kali Yuga’s temptations. And it’s not late, you can. You can also do it. Don’t think that your chance is gone. No. You still have a chance, and as long as I am sitting, I have a certificate to sign. But I try. You are not capable. I am feeling on the top, the pot, but down is broken, dripping out down. What should I do? What can Gurudev do? Every step, we change our thoughts and our feelings. Tapasya surrounds everything you will find. Great ṛṣis dedicate. They had children and all, and after gave them knowledge and everything. And then you went to tapasyā, and became a very great, very great. So, without that true love in the heart, you cannot become that one. It doesn’t matter if you take some uniform or not uniform. Christmas time should remind us that we love all creatures, every entity. You see that they are showing sometimes pictures of a cradled baby Jesus, and there is also a donkey standing, there is a cow also, and there is a goat also. Showing how animals are also happy and looking at this baby. And now you cut them, kill them, and you eat them. These animals, that was Jesus, didn’t want that. We manipulated everything. We changed everything. We are looking for the original. The flower that was to be offered, I found it within the flower. Oh Lord, the flower which I want to dedicate to you, I couldn’t find that flower. I searched shore to shore and door to door. But I didn’t find the flower that I wanted. Then finally, it is said, maybe, oh Lord, it was my mistake that I couldn’t find. And that flower means your love. That flower is your devotion. That flower is your dedication. That flower is your heart. Therefore, satsaṅg is durlabh in Kali Yuga. Ku-saṅga is many. So it is said, fortunate are they who are only searching for satsaṅg. And unfortunate, unlucky are they who are searching for Kuśaṅga to go to Kuśaṅga. This Kushaṅga has destroyed all the environment in the world. So we are thinking of the yugas: Satyuga, Tretāyuga, Dvāparayuga. And we are just in the stream of the river which is flowing. Let’s see what will come, what will happen. We are changing the dates on the calendars. I also got a calendar today. Thank you. From Vienna Ashram, I got a present. Yes, very good. The new year begins on Monday. Oh, Saturday. Very good. Very nice. Saturday, Saturn, we should eat more oil, yes, on that day, and hold the iron, yes. I don’t want to go in this direction now. The calendar is nice. We don’t need to do anything, only one thing: yoga in their life, harmony for body, mind, and soul. That’s nice. Keep it in your pocket. Not this one, that’s empty. What is this side? Heart, keep it in the heart. I wish you a very happy, very, very happy, very healthy, harmonious, peaceful, loving, successful, prosperous new year. That you will practice more, make more positive saṅkalpa, and that your spiritual energy will grow, spirituality will improve, that you make steps for towards spirituality and towards God. Ātmā Jñāna, self-realization. Every festival in the world reminds us of something beautiful. There is one bhajan, a beautiful bhajan. Holy saint. Or living that becomes a holy place, a pilgrim place. 68 holy, holy places there are, many millions and thousands, but many are 68, and there were the great saints were living. That is the festival on their name. And those humans who can dedicate, renounce, and get that divine consciousness to lead others. Mahāprabhujī said in his bhajan, "Guru Bhakt Guru Devotees of the Gurudev who follow the path of truth, they are real humans. Others have the body of humans, but qualities are different." So, I wish you a very divine time, a very blessed evening, Christmas, and a Happy New Year. Blessings for your families, your friends, your village, and countries, wherever you are. And the 24th of December this year is also coincidentally Mahāprabhujī’s Mahāsamādhi Day, the anniversary of Mahāprabhujī’s. It will be a live program; this time is also a live program. There will be bhajans and satsaṅg. You are all welcome to see that on Swamiji.tv, or come there. Best is you come there; that is the best. Who knows how many satsaṅgs we will have together? Who knows how many times we will be in that divine, holy country, India, and in ashrams? But, of course. Their family obligations and so on, but this depends on the people from Navi Sadh, ex-Yugoslavian Serbians. They are governing and manipulating the entire webcast. So I told them already now, before today is the 19th, 20th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th. Six days before, I am telling them, if they are normal people and listening to Guru Vākya, they will do all their best to have a webcast. It doesn’t matter which kind of instrument they have to bring. I wish very much on this Christmas that they begin punctually and show all programs, and everyday new programs, on the webcast. It doesn’t matter from which āśram, which āsanas, or even prāṇāyāms. But every day, something new. This is our, all of our, Christmas wish, no? There were three people who said yes. Okay. Doesn’t matter even if they are home. They can show their altar and make prayer. That’s enough. But every day, ten minutes, one hour, half an hour, something new. Yes. Once more, all the best and much love. And now we have for children who are here, all little children, meaning under 15 years, and those who have at home children under 10 years. For them, a little present is prepared by our Austrian Bhaktas and president of the... Society asked me specifically, "Please, if first can come the children or the parents from other countries, because for Austria they have separately after something more beautiful." So first they should come, but children who are here, also Austrian, they should come also. Where is the basket? Hey, young boys, come. Thank you. Thank you very much. And we wish all the best to the board committee of the Vienna Ashram and all Karmayogīs who are doing duties, like Mahimā Jyotī, Maṅsā Devī, I am Nāth Brahmānand, and Yāna, and many, many other people are working and helping. Thank you very much. This book is titled, "Der Dachte, Er sei ein Schaf." This is a very, very famous story from the Vedānta philosophy. Many, many sādhus, many swāmīs who give lectures on Vedānta tell this famous story. It means directly or indirectly that I am not this body, I am the Ātmā. And so it’s about Vedānta teaching. This story is from Vedānta. And it is unfortunately all in German language. One day it will be in English also. Nice. Aap gaoge, Meera? Aap gaoge? Aao, aage aajo. Come a little to the front.
