The Mahāsamādhi of Śrī Devapurījī

A satsang commemorating the Mahāsamādhi of Śrī Devapurījī, sharing stories of his miraculous nature.

"Śrī Devapurījī was one of the members of that great yogī, who then came to Rajasthan."

"For Śrī Devapurījī, nothing was impossible... He could talk to them. He would give them instructions, and they would follow."

A speaker addresses a gathering on the anniversary of the sage Śrī Devapurījī's conscious departure from his physical body. He narrates miraculous stories, such as reviving a dead child and a sheep, and describes Devapurījī's life as a powerful siddha connected to Śiva, his mastery over animals, and his profound influence as the master of Śrī Mahāprabhujī. The talk emphasizes Devapurījī's enduring spiritual presence and protection for all practitioners.

Today is the Mahāsamādhi day of Śrī Devapurījī. We all know who Śrī Devapurījī was. More or less, everyone has received some translations from the biography of Mahāprabhujī and heard many tellings about Śrī Devapurījī. Many people were there in the āśram. Śrī Devapurījī was born, I think, in the Sīkar district, near the Kailāś Āśram. He lived many, many years hiding in the Himalayas. Some people mean that it was not he who was born in Sikar district, Sikar Devpurījī. Some people think that it is not that Siddhe Purījī who was born in the region of Sikar. Siddhe Purījī comes from an ashram called Siddha Dhām or Siddha Dhāmī. There lives a very great Siddha who belongs to the Atal Akhāḍā, known as Śrī Alak Purījī. "Alak" means indescribable. Śrī Alak Purījī lives with some of his disciples. They have no permanent place; they are moving every day to different places. They do not come to those ways or places where most people come, or tourists. They do not appear in places where people gather, especially not where tourists visit. It is said that these siddhas, some call them the Sapta-ṛṣis, the seven ṛṣis, are visible sometimes and sometimes not visible. It means they live above the material world. With their body, they are completely liberated. Anytime they can appear, anytime they can disappear. They can materialize and dematerialize at any time. Due to this, we do not know how many years they are there, or how old Alak Purījī and the other yogīs who live with him are. Śrī Devapurījī is one of the members of that great yogī, who then came to Rajasthan. It is believed that Śrī Devapurījī has got all kinds of signs, nature, or abilities as God Śiva. Shiva means conscious, pure consciousness. Shiva means purity. Shiva means fire. Shiva means the liberator. Shiva means the destroyer. Shiva means the destroyer of negative qualities and protector of the devotees. From the Trinity, Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva, Śiva is known as the most gracious, most kind. With a little prayer, he is satisfied. He is pleased. Any bhaktas who meditate on Śiva realize quickly. For Śrī Devapurījī, nothing was impossible. There are a few stories. One lady came with her mother-in-law and father-in-law, a young lady with a small kid who had died. Devpurījī was staying in Kailāś Āśram. Śrī Devapurījī always had many, many disciples with him. Śrī Devapurījī’s disciples were less human, but more faithful ones. Like scorpions, mosquitoes, bees, snakes, dogs, horses, any animal, birds—he could talk to them. He would give them instructions, and they would follow. For us, this is really like something funny. Of course, you can also say to your dog, "Go into another room," and it will follow. But snakes, birds, goats, and many others would listen, all sitting as if in satsaṅg. It means he understood and spoke the whole universal language, Parāvidyā. They were very faithful to him. But when other humans came, they only came when they needed something. They were not really, many not really following. We do not do what God says. If we did what God says, we would be sitting here today as enlightened souls. But we are only doing a little of the light. We do what God says when we have some problem or when we need something. When that thing is over, when the work is over, then we put God again somewhere under the furniture. Humans are very selfish. So, these three persons came with a little kid who was a dead body. They went to Devapurījī, and of course, Devapurījī refused them. He sent his dogs to hunt them away, but they were not afraid of the dogs. Then he sent about 30 to 40 snakes. All cobras were coming to scout the way, but still they kept on approaching Devapurījī. They put it all there, which is too late, 10 o’clock at night. No one should come here, but they came. They were weeping, and they asked him to give life. It was about four or five hours late, the body. Devapurījī told them, "Everyone comes through their karma. All we have in our life is... and who came will go. ...and who came will go, but love is love. Mother is mother." She kept on weeping, and she just put the dead body on the lap of Śrī Devapurījī. Of course, God always has to do what the devotee says. Children, whatever they need, they will get from their parents. Sooner or later, in one hour or in two hours, the parents have to give. So Śrī Devapurījī gave life to that child. It was not only that one child, but several. Not only children, not only humans, but also animals. But why am I telling you about this child? Because it is from that village, near the village of Kelaš, but it is not a far distance, not even 100 meters. The village is very close, less than 100 meters from Kailāś Āśram. What, for me, is more believable is that the mother is still living. She is now about 75 or 80 years old, and she lost her eyesight now. That boy, who was given life, served in the Indian Army, and now he lives there as a retired person. The people of that area, when you speak about Śrī Devapurījī, will say, "That was our God, and he was a Christian." A goat had died, and people were carrying her away when Devapurījī met them on the way. He asked them, "What are you carrying?" This is a dead goat, a sheep, not a goat. It was black. Devapurījī said, "But stop, I want to drink her milk first." They said, "Aśvāmījī, she has died, and she has no milk." He said, "If she dies, then she will come again in life. She has to fulfill my wish. I want to bring milk. Put her here." Now for us, it’s like a joke. Devpurījī said, "Now I recognize who she is. She was the wife of a very rich merchant. She was more greedy than him. She didn’t meditate. She didn’t thank God for her richness, and she was very cruel to her servants. That’s why she came as a goat again. But you know, she used to lead a very comfortable life. So give her to me. She will have a comfortable life with me." Devapurījī raised his hand like this. Devapurījī turned his hand, and the dead sheep got up and had milk. All the time she was with Devapurījī. Whenever he got something to eat, when Bala Hansor ate, he said first, "This rich lady must eat it." Whenever he got some milk, he said, "First, for that rich lady." After several years, after a few years, Devapurījī said, "Now is the time to leave. You will become human again, and you will become a disciple, and you will get realization." So, who knows who is that one? I am searching for her. I am still looking for her. Devapurījī had very nice satsaṅgs. Hundreds of people gathered there. There was mostly good food prepared to eat. Every day there was something like halvā, sweet, some different chapatis, chapati, edashegek. And people liked it. Why not? We go to satsaṅg and we get it in. After some years, still all is as it is. Very few could develop, but all were still human. Only a small number have developed a little, but the rest were like all the others. And that is where Purīḍā learned. There is no more satsaṅg. I will teach the animals now. He said, "Come all out and go away a little far from here. The ashram building will fall down now." People were saying, "What does he say?" If I say, "Careful, this tree will fall down." He will say, "Swamiji is now making jokes. Swamiji is full of his humor now." So, therefore, he said, "Come quickly." He said, "Fast, fast, you are going out fast." People obeyed. When all came out, and people who were sitting around near there moved away, the upper part of the building fell down. So many snakes came. Devapurījī said everybody will take his prasād, throwing his snakes to everybody. So, people went away and they thought he got crazy. The rest of his life, he lived like this. Who came to him with real love, as God would help him, and other dust was not coming near. After that ashram fell down, some parts which remained look like this, which you have a picture of on this souvenir in Bulgaria. Now you can see what it looked like in this book, in this picture. On the top of the roof, a big tree grew up. Under the tree, he had a nice little fireplace, and he was sitting there all the time, meditating. From that place where he was sitting, under this tree, it doesn’t matter in which direction you look, it’s a beautiful, far look, an indescribable beauty there. So, what we want is, when they go to India, most of the time they are sitting there all the time. I always tell Devapurījī, please keep your snakes under control. We like to see them only from far away. We like to see them, but only from a distance. Here, on this picture on the right side, you can see the monument where Śrī Devapurījī’s physical body was buried. I was lucky to see this ashram as it is. But now, due to many other people, we made some kind of arrangements there. The old part and old ashram and its room, all are kept as it is. Only one hectare is left, so there the Lord used to live. It really has the atmosphere of Kailāś, holy mountain Kailāś. When we are in January there, people say it’s really Kelaś. Very, very calm, and very pleasant things. Recently, someone told me a story about Śrī Devapurījī, that he got some kind of infection on his calf, and it got worse and worse. There was inside somebody called Peep, Aita, this yellow pus, and the whole calf was swollen, and he didn’t notice; he didn’t want to. The man who told me the story said he was about 13 or 14 years old at that time. His father said to Śrī Devapurījī, "Lord, do you need some medicine?" He said, "For what? Do you need some water?" Devapurījī said, "Why? Does it disturb you?" Devapurījī asked, "Does it bother you?" He said, "Yes, because I cannot see that we are suffering." So, Devapurījī had always with him one sword. He took his calf like this, and with a sword he cut all of it: skin, flesh, nerves, everything. He made with the nerves like this. And he burned like this, from the ankle joint till the knee. There was only the bone and these nerves as strings. He took his turban, tore it in half, put it in his hands, and rubbed it around his leg and told him, "Does it disturb you now?" He was only sitting with folded hands. The next day, when he came back to Śrī Devapurījī, Devapurījī told him, "Now open it, please." He opened it, and what he sees? Healthy skin, hair on it, and no one could say it was like this yesterday. One night, nowhere to be seen, any various scars. He couldn’t see any vehicle anywhere. What could we say about this? He didn’t make it purposely, but if it should be. On the way, he meets a hunter who had killed some birds, and he had one basket of birds. When he saw, about a hundred meters away, the deer coming, he ran away and put the basket somewhere under a bush. Because people are always very much respecting Śrī Devapurījī and very afraid. Because the people are very clean, and they are very afraid of him. Because it is said that when Śiva opens his third eye, then whatever comes in front is all burned. But you have this, what you call the laser. The original first laser is called the Shiva eye. So, he hid the basket somewhere near Devapurījī, and he greeted Devapurījī. He put his hat on, and then he came to meet Devapurījī. Devapurījī went to meet Devapurījī. Devapurījī said, "What did you hide behind that bush?" He said, "Nothing, Lord." Devapurījī took his sword. Devapurījī said, "Why did you say nothing?" Devapurījī said nothing. He said, "It’s for my children, something." He said, "I see how you have mercy in your heart for children, but what about your children? And what about the children of these birds? You didn’t think of them. God sees everything. God sees everything, your selfishness and your cruelty. These are two sins, double sins. Bring me that basket here." He brings a basket, and she is inside many, many big birds. Devapurījī kicked the basket, and a bunch of the birds flew away, and we cannot let fly even a little butterfly. We can’t even fly for a single flight. So, what could we think and say about that? And what could we say about that? You may say person, let us say personality, or God, or God, or God. What will you say about that? Who lived here on this planet in this century? And he was the master of Śrī Mahāprabhujī. You know many things about Śrī Mahāprabhujī. Śrī Devapurījī lived in that part where all the people in the area are devotees to him. Whenever we go to India, we have the opportunity, and we are fortunate to go to Kailāś Āśram and breathe that light energy, paint our energy, and pay our respect and adoration to Śrī Devapurījī. Practitioners of yoga in daily life are all protected by Śrī Devapurījī. The science of yoga in daily life is the teaching of Śrī Devapurījī and Mahāprabhujī. So, Śrī Devapurījī is our ideal, the Lord of our heart, the name of all yogīs. It is not that he needs us, no. We need him. We need him... We need him. Unfortunately, it is said that Śrī Devapurījī’s photos were not visible. Unfortunately, there are no photos of Śrī Devapurījī. People ask sometimes for photos. He said, "Yes, my photo is the sun. Whenever you want to look to me, you look to the sun. That’s my photo. You can look at my eyes, my lips, my nose, in the sun. Other photos, pieces of paper, you will destroy and throw everywhere." But there were some artists who made something, and this was with a few devotees in India, and I got that. Then one of the other artists imitated and made it, which you have in this book also. There I have written some words from him. He used to tell the people, because there is nothing written far from him, because there is no written memory about him. God takes upon Himself the destiny of the devotees. Every thought and work which begins with the grace of Gurudeva will positively succeed. There is no power in the universe which can hinder you. Keep Gurudev in your heart, and your success will be ensured. Param Yogeshwar Śrī Devapurījī. Śrī Devapurījī, I don’t know how many years he lived. The people said that in the early morning, sometimes he used to shout to these people. Because they are mostly living, the families, like warriors, kṣatriyas, who are ruling the country, they were like little kings, lords, landlords. He used to say to them, "Your mother is running away. Why don’t you keep her? Call her back. Respect her. Why are you sleeping? Get up. Your mother is running away." People didn’t understand what he meant. It meant very soon the kings lost their powers. They lost the land, and democracy came. So people said this Devpurījī told them the motherland is going away from them. Śrī Devapurījī’s words were the truth. His movements were so gentle. He had no... the shadow of his body. And also, you could not see, when he was walking, how to call it, the foot size. So his being there was for people something. The people were living there, I think, I imagine, completely in other consciousness. They couldn’t recognize who he was. Some could recognize who he is. People completely forgot something to ask him. We would have asked him something, definitely. I’m sure you would have asked many things. Like this, one day, Devapurījī told all the village people, "Tomorrow morning, I will leave my physical body here, and again my light will unite into my nirguṇa form, my cosmic light." People thought perhaps if they believe or not. Because he was not ill, not suffering, nothing. Next morning when people came to see his darśana again, they saw him in this middle room, in this photo. They saw him sitting in lotus position in samādhi, like this. It means he departed from the body, nothing else. It happened something about after midnight, and that is today, the new moon day, according to the Indian calendar. Now we have our prayer place in the hall. To see every day this ashram, and see this tree, under which tree the Lord was sitting, which was planted by Himself. On which tree was He looking all the time? And if we also look to that tree, we are one with Him. Śrī Devapurījī passed about 50 years ago, or something like this. In 1978, Śrī Holī Gurujī wrote me a letter. That morning, when Śrī Holī Gurujī was meditating at about 3:30, he suddenly saw Śrī Devapurījī coming from the sky. Holī Gurujī got up and greeted him. He was very happy because Holi Guruji said he never saw Śrī Devapurījī in such a way. He was very happy because he had never seen Śrī Devapurījī in such a bright and clear form. Devapurījī smiled and said, "I am going to Europe, to Mahesh, to visit Maheswarananda. Deep is already there. Mahāprabhujī is already there. On the way, I just want to bless you." Holy Gurujī was so delighted, so happy, and he wrote me that letter, and of course I have that letter. So it means they are here. We are very fortunate, and we are their devotees. You are all their devotees. You were with them in past lives, and you are born again here. That’s why he also came here to take care of us, to take care of you. So you should have no doubts in your heart. What should I believe? Who am I? Am I a Hindu, a Muslim, a Christian, or something different? You are not a Hindu, not a Muslim, not a Christian. You are a human. You are a human, you are spiritual, you are a yogī, you love God, you serve God through the form of this body, and we serve God through His holy grace. Therefore, there is no need to be more confused and search for something here or there. You know where we are and who we are. Not only you, not only thousands, but millions of devotees are here. There are millions of callers in this part of the world, and they are all getting the message now. Now the light is awakening again in their minds. And now the light is awakening again in their minds. It will continue. There we will need to thank and serve our Lord back. We have to serve and praise our Lord, to dedicate our work to Him, and bring His Divine Message in the light of Śrī Devapurījī and Śrī Mahāprabhujī to as many hearts as you can, having their conscience awakened again. So, on this special day, where again his consciousness was dissolved in his Cosmic Consciousness, if we think the human way, then of course it is a great pity that he is not anymore in this population. But if we think in another way, then it is good that he is again one with his cosmic light, and he is also one with us. He is here. Wherever you will think, he will always be there. I am sure he will always protect us, and he will always be with us. So we give Him back our respect and love. The foolish person is happy when someone is born; a stupid person is happy when someone is born and cries when someone dies. But, it is not easy. Attachment is attachment. It can be positive and negative. Love is love. So, of course, this physical body, our physical eyes, requires the visible form, which we can touch, which we can feel, which we can smell, which we can see, and when this is gone, then we are unhappy. So this day is the Mahāsamādhi day of Śrī Devapurījī, and their coming and going is their own decision. And their arrival and departure is their own decision. God’s arrival and departure happen through His own determination. The normal beings are born here because of their karma, destiny. And God comes through His own will. And so, guilty ones come into prison because of their mistakes. And the judge comes and gives the free judge them, uh, just to him, and opens the door and lets him be free. In time, when the judge or the person who comes to free him and the prisoner both are in the prison. In the same building, under the same roof, in the same air, the same place is a prison. Both are in prison. The guilty one and the liberator. But people do not know this. People think there are two persons in prison. But who knows that one is in prison because of the mistakes? He likes us. He is ready for the name of the Lord, and others are there because of his liberation. So we are all born in this world as prisoners of our karma. And Guru Dev comes here as a liberated one to liberate us. So God has to be in the same form. God must be in the same form to speak to us and be with us. He, for the sake of God’s devotees, has to go through certain circumstances of life and is bound to the biological process. All this God takes trouble on Himself because of His devotees, His children. He loves humans, and He loves animals. He loves His whole creation. So, lead your life like this. Keep thinking, never think negative. Don’t think cleverly with your intellect; that’s only harming you. Thinking negative means poisoning your own consciousness. If you cannot think positively, then at least you should not think negatively. If you can’t move forward, then you should at least try not to move backward. Remain on that spot where God put you. He will come and take you from there. So, tolerance, understanding, recognition, love, and harmony should we create throughout our life. We need to create harmony in the world and meditate on Śrī Dev Puruṣa. Meditate on Śrī Dev Puruṣa. Śrī Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān Kī Jai. Satsaṅgatam Dharma Kī Jai. Āj Kī Ānanda Kī Jai. Dev Kī Jai. Hari Om.
