On Devapurījī

A satsang discourse on the lineage and divine nature of Satguru Devapurījī.

"Devapurījī is our Satguru, our Paramguru... an incarnation of Lord Śiva."

"All living beings are born through their destiny, through their karma. But it is God who incarnates, manifests freely to liberate us."

The lecturer narrates the life, nature, and miracles of Devapurījī, explaining him as a Svayaṃbhū (self-manifested) incarnation of Śiva who descended to liberate beings. He shares stories of resurrection and healing, describes the Siddhas of the Himalayas, and emphasizes the protective power of the guru lineage for dedicated practitioners.

This evening, I would like to tell you something more about Devapurījī. Devapurījī is our Satguru, our Paramguru. When we sing "Paramguru Swāmījī," this bhajan is directed to Devapurījī and was composed by Mahāprabhujī. Mahāprabhujī was a disciple of Devapurījī, and every bhajan, every word of Mahāprabhujī directs us towards Devapurījī. Devapurījī was an incarnation of Lord Śiva. Śiva has many, many names. One of the names of Śiva is Svayaṃbhū. This Svayaṃbhū means He manifests Himself. Other things are created by Him; the whole creation, the whole manifestation, is manifested by One. But who has manifested Him? There it is said no one has manifested Him. He is known as Svayaṃbhū. Therefore, Śiva is the greatest principle in the universe. There is harmony between Śiva, Brahmā, and Viṣṇu because all three of them have their function. It is not the person, but it is a principle. And from this principle, from this trinity, Śiva is Svayaṃbhū, and that Svayaṃbhū incarnates, then manifests in physical forms. What does incarnation mean? The Incarnated One comes from the Self here, with His own willpower. One man is guilty and is closed in one room or in prison. The other person goes with free will to open the lock and free that person. Now both of them are in the same room. If other people see, they will say, "Yes, both are there in the same room." But one came there as a guilty one, and one came there as free, to liberate the guilty one. So all living beings are born through their destiny, through their karma. But it is God who incarnates, manifests freely to liberate us, to protect us, to free us. And that incarnation is in the same form, in the same space where we are. But this is known only to those people who know who is the guilty one and who is the free one. Others will say both are guilty; they are in prison. So to know and to realize God or the whole incarnation is not easy. It’s not a subject for a common person. There, you need the real heart. There, you need the real intellect, jñāna viveka. Another thing is that that godly incarnated Personality has everything, doesn’t need to practice; everything is there, naturally. Siddhis, perfections, all natural and supernatural functions, powers, are serving them. Is He ready for them to do anything? And even if we would like to run behind, they don’t wait for us; they run away. So it is said in this prayer, what we are praying every day. Mahāprabhujī said this, that Devapurī is the rising sun in the darkness, and he knew everything from his childhood. He is that one who brought the science of yoga. And that Śiva incarnates in different forms in many different times. Deva Puruṣa was born near Kailāśa, Rajasthan. And from his childhood, he was a very miraculous child. We don’t know when he went away from home. At a very young age, a very, very young age, he came to the Himalayas, in the Himalayas between Kedārnāth and Badrināth. There are some Siddhas living, Siddha yogīs, perfect yogīs. Some call them ṛṣis, some call them yetis, some call them siddhas, and some call them yogīs. Yogīs, ṛṣis, siddhas, munis—it is the same. And those Siddhas, they are living there. There are about twenty-five, twenty-four, and they are not visible to anyone. They change their place, and they only appear very seldom to certain devotees only. It is not that they are afraid and they are hiding themselves, but they try to keep away from this pollution of māyā, and to take care of this creation of God. They are God. They are one in God. They are those who must perfectly treat the body, mind, consciousness, and soul. They do not belong anymore to the time of the age. We are affected by that law of the age: young, old, ill, healthy, and so on. But they have all in their hands. They can appear like a little baby, or they can appear like five thousand years old. That’s why there is difficulty in recognizing what the Yeti means. How old is he? Yeti means, in our definition, in our mythology, a Siddha. The word Yeti comes from yatana. And yatana means trying, practicing, exercising, trying and trying and trying, doing something, making an experiment with something. Sooner or later, you will be perfect in that. Don’t give up as long as you are not perfect in that. And if you give up, you are not the master of it. Doesn’t matter, it may be archery. Practice every day with the arrow and bow until you become perfect. In the Mahābhārata, there comes a story. In ancient times, girls had the right to first choose their husband. And everyone had to respect this. So in the family system, the king families, all the princes and the kings used to come, and the princesses, whomever she would like, she would go and give her garland, flower mālā. So there was one princess, and she made a wall where she hung a picture on the ceiling, a picture of a fish. And put the water, like a little bathtub, a water tub, where this picture is reflecting in the water. And now this picture is moving, circling. Now, that boy who will shoot the arrow in the eye of the picture of the fish by looking in the water, not at the picture, in the water, will be my husband. Not easy. Poor boys. But they are always there. That was the price. It’s not easy to have. If you want it, then get it with your own practice. So many, many princes were coming. They were sitting, about 100, 200, or 300. With great expectation and hope that perhaps she will change her mind and give me the flower mālā. All they had was a nice shaving, a nice cloth, and a place to sit. But she had this word, this hope, and it was Arjuna. If you read the Bhagavad-gītā, it was Arjuna who held the bow like this, looked in the water, and he shot, and he, how to say, he touched the target or the eye of the fish. And like that, how then he’s marrying. Anyhow, I’m not going to tell you the whole story of it. Practice makes perfect, and if you give up, you didn’t master it. And if you change your opinions, if you change your feelings, if you change your techniques, if you change your mantras, if you change your masters, the times keep on changing, you cannot master. Maybe it is the work of several lives, not only one life. So those yetis, through years and years, hundreds of years, trying, trying,... they became Jīvanmuktas. They live in the material world, but they are not bound anymore to this natural law. They live in a physical body, but the physical body is like an astral body for them. They can appear and they can disappear. They can appear at once in several places. And to them, the siddhis are standing all the time with folded hands and waiting for some instruction. And from that ashram, from that group, their guru is known as Ālak Purījī. And Ālak Purījī, whom Dev Purījī adored as his guru. If you know the story, a little bit about Bābājī, in Yogananda’s biography, I didn’t read all, but people tell. If it is like this, then Bābājī is that group of Ālakpurījīs. So, like this, there are seven ṛṣis, so the mystery of this spirituality is also very hidden. They protect us. They love us. They pray for us. They give us a chance. If they were not here, humans would be completely crazy, mad, and would destroy everything. And such divine personalities, gods, I think, are not only existing there, but around this globe or in many, many different places. It doesn’t matter which continent. They are everywhere. They are here too, now. One can feel, if one has those sensibilities. One should be sensitive to it, so don’t change. Don’t say, "Can I have one kriyā more? Can I have one mantra more? Can I have something more?" Just master first what you have. Then we will talk in the next life about how it is, if you need more Kriyā or not. But people don’t wait. Devpurījī came from the Himalayas. He spent a lot of time in the mountain of the Himalayas called Kailāśa. You know all about the holy mountain Kailāśa, the holy lake Manasarovar, and so on. And then he came back to Rajasthan, and there, where he lived, the village is known as also Kelāś. They gave this name after, because of Devpurījī. And really Kailāśa has that atmosphere, like the holy mount Kailāśa. In the winter, it is also cooler than any other places. So in every aspect Kelāś is Kelāś, therefore he lived. The one event which you know, probably, is that one man who was a hunter killed some birds, a basket full of birds he was carrying home. And on the way, Devpurījī met him and asked him, "What is in the basket?" He says, "Just nothing." Devpurījī said, "Don’t lie in front of me. What’s inside?" He said, "Lord, something for my children." Devpurījī said, "Yes. You are always thinking of your own children. But you didn’t think of their children? The children of them who are in the basket, put down here." So he put the basket down, therefore he kicked the basket. And all these little, little birds, about fifty or sixty birds, which were killed a few hours before, they flew away. And if we kick the basket, we will follow over, not the birds. What can we think now about that person? Is he a Siddha? Is he a yogī? Is he an incarnation? Is it God? Is it human? Is it supernatural? What is that? Different opinions. The same evening, something happened. Near this village, Kelāś, very near, just 300 or 400 meters away, is another village called Jalonda. And in that village, one child is dying. And the mother and grandmother of the child, and the grandfather of the child, they brought this child to Devpurījī. He died. The child died about evening, about five o’clock, and in the night it is said it is not good for the funerary, for the funeral. That’s not good. Only morning, daytime. So about nine o’clock in the evening, or ten o’clock, they thought, "Let’s go to Devapurījī." It was only the child. And they came with him there. And Devpurījī gave life to the child. After four or five hours of death, the child came back to life. That man is very healthy. Now, our modern medicine will say, if for more than certain seconds or one and a half minute, if the brain stops functioning and then again begins to function, then there will be a defect in the brain. The person will not be able to remember something, or will be paralyzed, or something will be. The person will have some problems, or he will lose his memory, or he will be paralyzed. To lose that, one cannot walk, no self-confidence. But after a few hours, it is impossible according to the medicine, but that man, he was very healthy. He served in the army. And now, enjoying his happy life as a retired person at home. His mother is still alive. Whenever I go to Kailāśa, when she comes, she tells me this story. That time she was a very young girl, 18-19 years old, when she had her son. So God can do the things, those things which we think are impossible. Impossible things become possible, and possible becomes impossible. They can change our destiny. Yes, they can. Their name, just remember them. I tell you my own experience, which I made a very nice experience with this. In 1975 or 1976, something like this, it’s winter time, one of my disciple families got a son. And the child was about four nights old. And there was some problem with the health of the child. And the doctor found that both kidneys are no longer usable. The x-rays, the ultraviolet light, all tests were positive, that the kidneys are not good. And, at maximum, they can save the life of this child for three more weeks. And now you can imagine the young parents, only one child, the first child, and such news. Of course, terrible. And if they would like to take a child at home, they can do it; it is their own responsibility. They can keep it in the hospital. They telephoned me and they spoke to me. "Swāmījī, please help." How to help? When you have nothing in your hand and someone asks you to give something, what will you do? You will put your hand in your pocket, and then you can give something. So whenever someone comes to me asking for help, I have nothing. No siddhi, no power. But I turn to Mahāprabhujī. I turn to Devpurījī because I am sure there is everything. And I can have what I want at any time. They listened to my prayer. I told her, the mother of the child, "Put your hands on both kidneys and repeat the mantra, ’Oṁ Prabhu Dīp Nirañjana Sabarduka Bhañjana,’ and it will be alright." It is easy for me to say, "All right, now if my words will be true or not, I said it will be all right." Now to protect my words is the duty of my Master. To protect the children, the parents are there. To protect the devotees, God is there. And I can tell you that child today is about fifteen years old, a very strong young boy, and very devoted. And also his actions, his behavior is like the light of Mahāprabhujī. These are the lights of my province. This was in Bratislava, it happened with the family Polak, and now they live in Toronto. And the child’s son’s name is called Kiran. Then also I gave him the name. Kiran means the light, the radiance. The radiance of the sun, the radiance of Mahāprabhujī. Impossible things can become possible, and possible things can become impossible. It depends on whether you understand or not. For that young mother, it was everything. Swāmījī said it will be. And she went to the hospital, she signed, and took her child home. And doctors were waiting for the news, when they will call the ambulance. After three months, they brought the child to the doctor. And they checked the kidneys. Perfect. There was nothing wrong. It was like completely in best, in order, new, without any defect. I said to Mahāprabhujī, "Thank you. I will take care not to promise too much, that you have the peace." So either Devapurījī or Mahāprabhujī, in their name is the immense divine joy, bliss. And for us, this is not a fairy tale, because we know the people who are still living a life, who lived with them and who had these experiences. Devpurījī was a very merciful one, a great protector, and no one could stop him. His decision was sure, but God’s decision is always sure and true. When it was raining, forty meters around him, there was not a drop of rain coming. He had always someone, an invisible being perhaps, who kept the umbrella. This is the truth. When it was pouring, pouring, but where Devapurījī was sitting, there was no rain coming, sliding. It is he who could just walk on the water like we walk on the floor. And he had, sometimes, a horse beside him. And he would ride the horse and suddenly disappear from the horse. But still, the horse would run like someone is sitting on it. And again, you could see he is coming there. Devapurījī was such a great yogī or an incarnation that he could suddenly stand here, appear here, and again disappear. To cure the disease, any kind of disease, for him was just to hunt away a mosquito. Many, many people who were cured tell me stories there when I go to Kelāś. And for these people who lived in this area, for them, they said, that was our God. We could go with anything. His preaching was this. People say what he used to tell. He didn’t compose any bhajans or prayers, and there were no photos of him. He passed away about 50 years ago, 49 years ago. And at that time, cameras were already existing. No pictures came. He said, "I give you my picture. My picture is the sun." Whenever you want to see my picture, look to the sun. The paper picture, you will throw it anywhere. Anyone can make it dirty, but that picture will remain. Always, a spot of light appears in the photo, that’s all. Therefore, he always said, "Be alert. Prepare yourself now for tomorrow." Don’t sleep unconsciously in ignorance, not a physical sleep. It means don’t ignore something. Don’t waste your time in ignorance out of your pride, ego, jealousy, complexes, and so on. And always he came and gave the people direct teaching, direct instruction. He knew everything. One day, one young man comes and he greets Devpurījī. Devpurījī said, "I bless you, in a fortnight you will be married." The man said, "Guru-deva, you didn’t recognize me. You know that I am already married, and I have three children." Devpurījī smiled and said, "Yes. I know you, your father, your grandfather, your great-grandfather, and I know you. I know that your wife, who is here, will die in three days. And these three children need a mother. So I bless you that in a fortnight they will have a mother." And in three days, really, she died. So he could see the future. He could see us through and through. And he knew what we need, so this is our chain of our family. We belong to this family. When you practice yoga in daily life, when you follow the words of Swāmījī, it’s not Swāmījī’s words. But it is that nectar of Devpurījī, Mahāprabhujī, Gurujī, to me, to you, and to your disciples. That’s how the chain is continuing. So, our father is very rich. Our father is very rich. Never think that our father is poor. No one can harm you. No negative energy can attack you. No mental disease will appear to you. And no magic power will influence you. If you will be faithful and recognize who is Devpurījī and who is Mahāprabhujī. Devpurījī’s body was very light, not many kilos; he was a yogī. When he walked, there was no footprint on the sand. And he didn’t have the shadow of his body. So it was a question, was he born as a normal person? He is born from the mother’s womb. Or did he just appear? And when he passed away, his body was also very peculiar. In the body were a lot of fragments, and it took people time to recognize if he had really gone away from the body or if he was still living. And the place where he lived, his ashram, if you go there with bhakti, then you will feel there that God lived here. Some cosmic light was here, acting. His name is the best medicine for us. Oṁ Shohaṁ Śrī Deva Puruṣa Mahādevāya Namaḥ. This mantra many of you have. This mantra is a very strong mantra. It burns all rubbish, all karmas. Oṁ Prabhupāda, Nirañjana, Śabda, Bhañjana. It purifies everything. So we have everything. We are rich, and I can tell you how I feel. I am very proud of myself in a positive way. I am fortunate that I am a disciple of them. And I can tell you that you are also a blessed one, you are also fortunate if you feel the disciple of them, the children. They are our freedom. Our liberation is meditating. Suddenly the euphoria came, like an airplane from the sky. And he appears to the holy Gurujī. And Holy Gurujī is asking, "Lord, how merciful you are." Devapurījī just smiled and said something. It’s in that letter written. I was on the way to Mahesh, to me, to Europe. But I just stopped here for a while to bless you. Holy Gurujī was so happy, so delighted, and he wrote me the letter. That is how lucky, how blessed I am. So it is he, it is Mahāprabhujī, and it is Holy Gurujī’s prayers which protect me, which protect you, that we can practice in such a way. Because the world is full of negative powers, the Rākṣasas are everywhere, but always they protect us. So Devapurījī’s light, Mahāprabhujī’s light, is always shining on us, always there. Devapurījī’s words are these: Be aware, don’t sleep, and act today for tomorrow. It means do everything today. Don’t be lazy. Don’t be a hypocritical person. Be straightforward and clear. Meditate, and he will help you. So, as much as I can tell you about Deva Puruṣa, he is just one drop in the ocean, because he is filled in the whole universe. So whenever you meditate, think of him. Every day, salute him. Whenever you see the sun for the first time in the day, greet him as a deity. That sun is the life of all, is the light, and that’s the Apollos. More about this you can read in the book, The Living Light. I hope they will soon be in your language, and you can read about this. Other things about yoga practices, I told you many times. Tomorrow I will tell you something more about this. I’m happy to see you, and definitely, you are tired. Some people yesterday at 10 o’clock started. It means 24 hours, so I wish you a pleasant night. Please sleep well, and we will see you again tomorrow. About 6:30, there will be meditation here. Anyone can come and should come, but first, sleep enough. Though Devapurījī said, "Don’t sleep," Svāmījī said, "Sleep." So Devpurījī didn’t speak about physical sleep. The village where Devapurījī used to live, most of the people living there are from the king’s families. The landowners, the landlords. And early morning, Devapurījī used to call them and shout at them. "Don’t sleep, get up, your mother is running away." People say, "What does he say? Mother is running away?" How to understand? So sometimes they come to you and ask, "What do you mean, please?" He said, "This land will run away, you will lose the land." And it happened, democracy came, and the king lost the land. So he, they said, Devapurījī told us, be careful, be awakened, be kind. But we were thinking that we are sure. That is what is called ignorance; it is the sleep. So inside, in your heart, be awakened. Have love for God and meditate, repeat your mantra, and physically relax, sleep, eat, work, do whatever you like. Wish you a good night, sweet sleep, and honey dreams.
