The Key of Discipline and the Goal of God

A spiritual discourse on discipline, discipleship, and the singular goal of God-realization.

"Self-discipline is the key to success. If the door is closed, you have a key in your hand. That key is self-discipline."

"Without God, life is in darkness. The spiritual result is that a divine soul returning to this world cannot live without God."

Swami Ji addresses the gathering, emphasizing daily spiritual practice and discipline as the key to progress. He explains the nature of a disciple using the analogies of a flower and a follower, and stresses that the ultimate goal—God-realization—must be kept in sight, just as one knows a destination like Zürich before arriving. He contrasts this deep goal with superficial worldly successes, concluding with an instruction for meditation.

If, through my words, my efforts, or my presence, I have given something good, and if even one of you truly understands and comes to love—to God’s love—then there will be more in my phenomenon. Realize the light as your own phenomenon. For me, this work with you all, Bitta, is a spiritual practice, a special work. Do not forget, I face enough difficulties in this part of the world. Often, I must explain again, start again from the beginning, as new beginners arrive and doubts arise anew. But I do it. I am like the sun that rises daily, whether someone wishes to acknowledge it or not, whether someone wishes to receive its light or not. And so, my God is always present. Fasting is not like that sun. Practice daily, but do so with a set intention and maintained discipline. The Americans do much advertising—commercial advertising, announcements—and they say: self-discipline is the key to success. If you wish to succeed, in any direction, you must open a door. If the door is closed, you have a key in your hand. That key is self-discipline. And when you practice it, it is for you, not for others. We have already had breakfast today. I wish you all good prāṇa. A full moon feast is healthy; one consumes a great deal of good prāṇa-meat throughout the body. Now we have a very good lunch to look forward to, and in the evening, a family awaits you, gathering for a large meal. So, enjoy your meal. Please do not let your food spoil today because of my lecture. In the coming days, we will see to continuing your meals properly. Keep the goal in mind. This is important for all of you here. The goal is clear but not yet realized. For example, I say we are going to Zürich. Our destination is Zürich, and everyone knows what Zürich is, but we are not there yet. Similarly, each of us knows, consciously or unconsciously, what God is, but we have not yet realized it. Therefore, always keep the goal in sight and continue. For a self-realized person, a God-realized one, a saint has always said again and again: Love all. The meaning and goal of life is God, not everything else discussed here. Once more, think deeply. Reflect on how many years you have been on the path, on your journey through this universe. We are all wanderers; we wander and wander. We have many beautiful experiences behind us and, unfortunately, some sad ones too. But now, fortunately, you have found this. I can tell you that you have found it, and this will surely lead you to your goal through my instructions, toward the light, the divine light of Mahāprabhujī. Because Mahāprabhujī lived just a few years ago, and because people who knew him are connected with me, this lineage is much closer to us than anything else. I wish for you to surely reach your goal through discipline. Try to be a disciple. "Disciple" means followers, as they say in English. Yes? These are the three things. First, the Flower. All students are flowers in the master’s garden. The master always wishes to pour forth and sometimes give sharp blossoms so the plant may become strong again. The second is called Follower—those who follow. Follow the feeling of the feet, the feeling, feeling, feeling from the Master. That means Followers. The third is to transcend being a follower. Don't just be a follower; try to be a follower in a deeper sense. To follow here means to follow divine words, to follow this light, God’s light. Practice your mantra daily. Nothing in this world is more important than God. You can let everything else go, but you should never, never diminish the divine feelings, this love and devotion in your heart. No matter what doubts you have, live in God Himself with those doubts, but live in Him. No matter how hard it is, still say: I want this for you, I want to walk with you. Why? Because that is our inner Self. We are human beings with these feelings. We know what God is, and we also know how terrible it can be to live without God—in darkness. Yesterday I sang a song about how I long, how I wait... Treasure the words of my master. Without treasuring them, without these words, life is like a fish without water. When a fish is taken out of water, how much it suffers and feels pain. No matter how beautiful the outer world is—flowers, this and that—you can say, "Hello little fish, I love you, how are you? Come a little closer, stay with me for five minutes, then you can jump back into the water." You can do everything, yet this darkness stinks because it does not belong to the fish's state. It can only live in water. The spiritual result is that a divine soul returning to this world cannot live without God. It is only going to where the divine nectar flows. So, without God, life is in darkness. Yogīs make an effort through all practices, whether they are pleasant or not, whether the knees hurt or the back hurts. The back and the knee will only hurt until this life; the end remains behind us here. Through all practices and efforts, the main thing is that the heart is always oriented in the right direction. And there, discipline is very important: fasting, practicing, showering, washing, praying, practicing mantra, meditating, doing everything. But there is a responsibility involved. As human beings, we have many responsibilities: towards our family, for children, partner, wife, husband; responsibility for our society, for our entire nature, for our future on this planet; and we have a great responsibility towards ourselves. We have many, many responsibilities. That does not mean one goes home and says, "A woman can also pull it. Come, let us. I do not need you." It should not be like that either. One must have great love and devotion, especially after a beautiful yoga lecture; one must have more devotion to your father. This love is also a surrender—to surrender purely. But in everything, the main focus must be directed towards God. Then the goal is reached. Otherwise, there are many superficial lectures: how to achieve success in my profession, how to conduct the most business, as customers say they must buy. The Americans say you are the best businessman because you can sell a refrigerator to someone living in the ice sheets. But those are superficial things; they are not deeper. What I have said today may be a little painful for some, but it is the opposite. I have touched a very deep chord, a deep point, a sensitive spot. But that is how it is. So, the answer was too long, Mr. Jan. One more thing: now we shall do meditation. I hold everything in meditation, contemplative—he is still there as well.
