The Power of Faith, Surrender, and Satsaṅg

Faith, surrender, and satsaṅg are the pillars of spiritual success. A divine source fulfills the positive resolve of devotees and masters. One must not stop or change course amidst life's difficulties, or a precious opportunity is lost. Human life is a rare and powerful tool for realization, endowed with intellect and discrimination. The greatest enemy is laziness, which, alongside anger and jealousy, lies dormant within and must be overcome. Surrender, when complete and permanent, brings lasting happiness. Spiritual practice is essential, for the body ages and external changes are superficial. The constant repetition of the divine name, the mantra, is the true wealth of life, counted wherever one is. The value of satsaṅg is supreme, illustrated by a story where one minute of true satsaṅg was judged greater than sixty thousand years of ascetic practice. Attend satsaṅg with an open, clear heart to receive its fruit.

"Man proposes and God disposes."

"One minute of the satsaṅg is greater than 60,000 years of tapasyā."

Mahāprabhujī is giving everything, and everything will be successfully done. The source is from Him. If you remember, and you read in the Līlā Amṛt, there are many, many such miraculous stories. For example, when Mahāprabhujī was very young and was taking care of some cows, sometimes the cows would eat all the crops of a farmer. They came to Mahāprabhujī and said, "Your cows have eaten all our crops; what will we do?" Mahāprabhujī asked them, "How much do you estimate you would have harvested if the cows had not eaten it?" They said about 100 tons, 50 tons, or something like that. Mahāprabhujī said, "Well, you will harvest five tons more than what you were estimating. If something is lacking, you can take from my house, from my family." And it happened that they harvested more than five tons beyond their estimate. Many, many such stories are there. It is said: man proposes and God disposes. Man is thinking, but God is leading. So the positive saṅkalpa of the bhaktas, the gurus, and the positive saṅkalpa of Bhakta Gurudev always fulfills. But a very important thing is that you should not stop along the way. You have to continue. There are difficulties; these are the different tasks in life, the different exams in life through which we have to go. If you change your feelings, your thinking, and your actions, then it’s gone. Then you lose something very important. The problem is that when we have something, we cannot estimate it. We don’t take it seriously, and we change something in us. When the change is gone, and when it’s gone, then the inner you will wake up and you will say, "How beautiful it was, how nice it was." But it’s gone. It can be some project, it can be your business, it can be some work, it can be relations, many, many things—your spiritual sādhanās. So we have to learn in life to value what we have. And if you don’t have the values, or if you lose the values, it is a great pity. Similarly, we should know the value of human life. Every life has great value. Even the life of a tree has great value. Every creature, but human life has some more differences. And that value is this: that this, or such a kind of body, is very rare. This is a very powerful tool given to you. And with this tool, with the help of this tool, you can come to the realization. Do not ignore, do not neglect. Like this, life will not come again. In many, many lives, it will not come. In this human body, God has given the most powerful tools: intellect (buddhi), discrimination (viveka), willpower, and talents to understand and practice. You remember that at the end of November, beginning of December, in December in Strylky, I told you something. That from that day, we all would begin to practice every day: āsanas, prāṇāyāmas, mantras, and saṅkhaprakṣālana. And you all promised, so I don’t want to ask you to raise hands up. But you know what you have done and what you have not done. The greatest enemy of the human is laziness. That’s the greatest enemy, and laziness is very pleasant, very sweet. And when laziness attacks you, it’s gone. So laziness, anger, jealousy, greediness, attachment—these are the negative qualities, unfortunately, which are also dormant in our consciousness. A beautiful rose plant has beautiful blossoms of the rose, but also thorns. So this beautiful human body, which has very beautiful, very valuable qualities, also has these negative qualities in it. And these qualities need to be overcome. It is not easy. Easy to speak and nice to hear, but it is difficult to master. We say in India, there is a saying: A disciple is asking the Gurudeva, "Gurudeva, you are doing sādhanā?" Gurudeva said, "Yes, but my inner self knows how hard it is." So people who are fighting with this, they know it’s not easy, but they are the happiest, and they will have fewer problems if they have mastery or overcome these negative qualities. First, laziness. Second, anger. When you awake the leḍī crocodile or leḍī snake, man becomes very aggressive. So when you are lazy, all your qualities are sleeping, good and bad. And if someone tells you to get up and do something, then the cobra awakes: the anger. So anger and laziness, and then jealousy, the hate, the greediness—these are all our enemies. So those who have surrendered—that Mahāprabhujī’s beautiful bhajan which was sung when I came in: "Sajan thane māfī re, maja karnā, maja karnā, Satguru sāyab kā sarnā, Sajan thane māfī re, maja karnā." Mahāprabhujī said, "O my dear, now you are free, enjoy, enjoy your life." Enjoy your life because you have surrendered all to Gurudeva. But it’s not easy to surrender. We surrender for a while and then not anymore. Surrender is surrender forever. So those who have surrendered forever are happy forever. And those who surrendered only intellectually, with tricky thoughts, they are suffering now. They know very well how much they are suffering because they changed the things. You give, and then you take it again. You don’t wait to be given back. You will be given back by the Lord, by Gurudev. Therefore, Gurujī said, "So all our projects will definitely be successfully finished only through Mahāprabhujī’s mercy." Have confidence. When there is confidence, when there is faith, everything will be fine. So for us, our sādhanā is very important. Many things end up changing; they will change. Our life is changing every second, every minute. The body is working, and every minute something is changing. We are getting older and older every day—every minute, not every day. Some people are fasting, trying to lose the color, kilos, try to color their hair, and put a little bit of some kind of paste on the face, and then smiling in the mirror at their own stupidity. "Oh, I look young." This is you smiling at your own stupidity. You don’t look, you are not young. This is only temporary, outer side, not reality. But it’s good as long as you believe. At least as long as you look in the mirror, you are young—till the next shower. So it means that we do not accept the reality. We should go with nature. It’s okay if you don’t like gray hair; make it black hair. And there are many people who want to make their hair something like white, or what you call the brown color, fair hair, or blond. But really, you cannot hide. After 10 to 15 days, or even in one week, you can see the black layer. The original color comes out, then it looks more ugly. But it is a kind of satisfaction. If you are not satisfied with anything, then at least you are satisfied with coloring your things, hair, and body, and anything. This is a play with the body, but how long? You don’t go with the nature in your thinking, but the nature is constantly influencing us. We are moving with the nature, and we will become old; days are waiting for us. But what have you realized from this life? Therefore, Guru Nānak Sāhib said: "Teri bītī umar hari nām binā, sumiran kar le mere manā." You know, when you will become old, then you will realize, "My life has passed without the name of God." Well, it is still never too late. Whatever you can do, take it, take it. You remember that story of the two or three boys who went into the cave. They wanted to go back, and one boy wanted to take some stones from there, some sand. You know this story. And though it was warned not to take anything, at the last minute he took something. It doesn’t matter what will happen. And when they came out of the cave, the cave disappeared. And he opened his fist and found diamonds. So these diamonds here mean the name of God, your mantra. So whatever you can take, take it. While running, you can take. It will be. So where are you? Doesn’t matter. You don’t need any sādhanā, you don’t need any material things for that. Sitting in the car, sitting in the train, sitting in the aeroplane, working at the computer, anything—let your mind go to the name of Gurudeva. Whether you are sitting in a car, in an airplane, in a train, working at a computer, or going somewhere, let your mantra flow in your mind. That is the richness of your life. And every mantra will be counted which goes through your consciousness. You know, now there is, in some countries, or almost in every country, a toll, a pay toll on the road. And some countries made a kind of credit card. So there is one special line; you can drive through that line. And 10-15 meters before that, the machine will register your credit card number, and it will open the barrier, and you can pass. As many times as you pass, automatically money will be deducted from your account. Similarly, however many times you repeat your mantra, it will be counted for you. So with a mālā, without a mālā, it doesn’t matter. The name of God should go consciously through your consciousness. "Sumaraṇ kar lé méré manā." Sumaraṇ means remember the name of God, repeat the name of God. That’s very important. And what you have, keep it. Don’t change. Do your sādhanā, do your sādhanā, do your sādhanā. That is a yogī. We are all very far on the yoga path. When people admire you—not me, you—so anyone who sees you, who comes, who knows something about spirituality and yoga, admires you. But I can tell you, only through talking you will not get liberation. About Guru Vasiṣṭha and Viśvāmitra? Yes. And about Śeṣanāga? This was the last story told by Gurujī about Guru Pūrṇimā, about satsaṅg—how great is the satsaṅg. So, at Rāmāyaṇa time, nearly 10,000 years ago, lived two great saints. One was Guru Vasiṣṭha Muni, who was the guru of Lord Rāma’s family. And at the same time lived a great saint called Viśvāmitra. Viśvāmitra was a great tapasvī, doing sādhanā, achieved many, many siddhis, and was doing many sādhanās. But Viśvāmitra wanted to have one title, and this title is Brahma-ṛṣi, a ṛṣi who is a knower of Brahman, and this could be given by Guru Vasiṣṭha Muni. But Guru Vasiṣṭha Muni never said from his mouth to Viśvāmitra and never greeted Viśvāmitra with these words as a Brahma Ṛṣi. And Viśvāmitra, though he had so many sādhanās and was so far in yoga sādhana, he was so angry—still his anger was there. And he killed the son of Vasiṣṭha, and he stole the cow, the cow which gives every milk. But still, Muni Vasiṣṭha was not angry. One day, there was a full moon day, and there was satsaṅg somewhere. So they invited Vasiṣṭha Muni to come and give satsaṅg. So he went and gave the satsaṅg. And after satsaṅg, he wanted to go home. He announced that about 12 o’clock in the night, he would go back to his hut. Viśvāmitra came to know this, that about 12 o’clock in the night, the Vasiṣṭha Muni would pass through this part. So he prepared a bow and arrow to kill the Vasiṣṭha Muni. So the Vasiṣṭha Muni was hiding in some bush. And when they came near the Guru Vasiṣṭha Muni and his wife Arundhatī, Arundhatī spoke to Vasiṣṭha Muni Ṛṣi, "Look how beautiful is the moonlight. It is so pleasant, so harmonious. It is a beautiful light." So the Vasiṣṭha Muni said to his wife, to Arundhatī, he said, "Yes, dear one. This moonlight is so beautiful and so pleasant and so divine, like the light of Brahma Ṛṣi Viśvāmitra." And Viśvāmitra heard these words; he threw away the bow and came out. When he came to Vasiṣṭha Muni, Vasiṣṭha Muni said to Viśvāmitra, "Oh, welcome, Brahma Ṛṣi, how are you?" He said, "That’s all I want to hear from your mouth. I apologize. I killed your children. I stole your cows. And still you are so gracious to me. You are not angry. What can I give you? I have nothing to give. But the sixteen thousand years of my sādhanā and tapasyā, I donate to you—that all fruits of my 60,000 years, all the fruits of 60,000 years of work." Therefore, Vasiṣṭha said, "I am happy, and I give you the fruits of one minute of satsaṅg." Viśvāmitra again got angry. "It’s injustice. I give you 60,000 years. Can you give me one minute of satsaṅg?" He said yes, because 60,000 years is not equal to one minute of satsaṅg. Viśvāmitra said, "That’s not right. Let’s go to God." They went to Viṣṇu, and he sent them to Śiva. Śiva said, "This judgment only can give the Śeṣanāga." Only Śeṣanāga can tell you what is more. Śeṣanāga is believed to be a thousand-headed snake, and this earth is resting on his head. If he moves, an earthquake takes place. So he should not move his neck. He is all the time in this position, holding the earth. So Viśvāmitra and Vasiṣṭha both went to Śeṣanāga. And both of them, with folded hands, they say to Śeṣanāga, "Our adoration to you. And please, can you give us the judgment?" Śeṣanāga said, "What can I give you? I have the burden of the whole planet. The weight of the whole planet is on my head. Open the windows. If you take it for some time, I will give you judgment." So Guru Vasiṣṭha received Viśvāmitra and said, "I give you 60,000 years of my hard sādhanā and tapasyā. Earth, please, just remain without the support of the Śeṣanāga." But Earth didn’t remain without support. Then, Guru Vasiṣṭha said, "Mother Earth, Pṛthvī, I give just one minute fruit of satsaṅg, and let Śeṣanāga come out for a while." And the earth raised up a little and remained without movement. Śeṣanāga was massaging his neck, doing sarvāṅgāsana, and Viśvāmitra said, "Tell us quickly before earth will fall on us." And Śeṣanāga said, "What should I say? Your judgment is already there. What you don’t see? Earth is without any support." So the Guru Vasiṣṭha was the winner, and Ṛṣi Viśvāmitra was the loser. It means one minute of the satsaṅg is greater than 60,000 years of tapasyā, all the sādhanās. So when we count everything in this world, finally what remains is the truth. That’s satya. This pṛthivī, this body, is supported only by the satya. When the Satya will disappear from this world, then Pṛthvī will again go into the earth or into the water. Therefore, satyaṁ eva jayate; where there is truth, there is victory. So, with such a satya decision, satya feeling, with that satya heart, you should go to the satsaṅg. Not only to drink tea and gossip and search for some friends and criticize someone and joke and be angry or jealous of someone, or be angry at who is giving satsaṅg: "This person doesn’t know what to talk." Why are you thinking like this? If you know better, then next time you should talk, but when we put you in front to talk, you will be most nervous and sweating. So satsaṅg is different. There is only love, only wisdom, only devotion. In the satsaṅg, you should go like an empty pot, so that you can get something more in. But if you go there like a full pot, whatever we try to put in, it will go out. So therefore, empty pot means clear heart, without doubts, without complexes, without anger. Then your sādhanā will be fruitful. That’s it, so do your sādhanā and do the satsaṅg. That will be the best.
