Build your intellect supportive

A clear aim is essential to prevent the intellect from becoming a destructive distraction. Without a definite purpose, the mind wavers among endless possibilities, changing direction with every new suggestion. This lack of clarity makes one susceptible to external influences and gossip, which act like poison, spoiling spiritual practice as lemon curdles milk. Negative talk and jealousy introduce destructive thoughts that can damage years of spiritual effort. One must therefore cultivate an intensive, unwavering aim and avoid all sources of negative influence. Protect your consciousness from harmful information that creates doubt and disturbs your peace. Spiritual progress requires guarding the mind and maintaining humility, allowing the intellect to become a supportive tool rather than an obstacle.

"Your aim must be very clear, intensive, and good. Nothing should be able to change you."

"One stupid thought, one stupid person, can destroy all your spiritual sādhanā."

I have a question about the intellect that I wish to surrender. I desire to dedicate myself fully, yet my intellect somehow disturbs me. Your intellect is correct, and your heart is also correct. Your intellect is right in this sense: it requires a concrete example. This indicates that your feelings and desires are not yet as intense as they should be. Your thoughts are excessive and destructive, meaning a very concrete, clear aim is missing from your life. You are still not certain of what you want. On your path, or towards the aim you are pursuing, there are always possibilities. For instance, you decide to go to the Adriatic coast. You pack your things, take your car, and drive towards it. On the radio, you hear about beautiful weather, nice snow, and perfect skiing conditions. So now you decide to go skiing instead, changing your route. You check into a hotel, intending to ski, but upon leaving your room you see an advertisement for a newly opened sauna. You think, "I can ski tomorrow; I'll go to the sauna now." In the sauna, people are talking about a football match tomorrow in VEP where every participant gets free pizza and other interesting things. So you take your car and go to VEP. Where is the Adriatic coast, and where is the football field in VEP? This illustrates the possibilities—the possibilities for change in your mind. And why does this happen? Because the aim is not clear. But if the aim is clear—for example, you must be at the Adriatic coast because your wedding ceremony is waiting—then you will definitely go to your wedding and not go skiing. Therefore, your aim must be very clear, intensive, and good. If you are ill and dislike medicine, but the doctor says, "Either you take this medicine or you will die," there is no room for argument. Your aim should be that clear. Nothing should be able to change you. The sun and moon may change their direction, but I will not change my direction or my path because I know what I want. It does not matter what people say; I know what it is. There was a man who had a vision. In this vision, he saw a very beautiful light and God. It was very clear in his mind, but other people called him stupid. Everyone who listened to him thought his screws were loose. Yet he knew what he had seen—a practical experience. As long as we lack practical experience, there will always be the possibility of change. You can read a book a thousand times, but without practical experience, it remains only theory. I recently heard someone on the radio say that reading a book on how to build and fly an airplane is just theory. When you sit in an airplane and it flies, that is practical experience. Sometimes in everyone's life, there are certain experiences—an inner feeling, something awakening within you. Suddenly, something is awakened, and you know what you want. Then you decide. At that point, your intellect will no longer be an obstacle but a helper. Of course, we should try to avoid those things which become obstacles on our path: certain discussions, certain books, certain societies. We should avoid all that can damage our spirituality or introduce a virus into our consciousness, so that our thinking does not become opposed. Negative talk can even create doubts towards God; it can crucify God. The human intellect is very sensible and sensitive. It still depends on steering, like you steer a car; you can steer it from one direction to another. For example, here in the sauna, there are both mixed and separate saunas. It is very clear; what they say in German is self-explanatory. Everybody goes to the sauna without clothes. No journalist writes negatively about this. Or you go to what is called FKK. No journalist writes badly about this. But if at the Kumbh Melā there are Nāgābābās, that is not considered self-explanatory. You see how the consciousness, the intellect of people, is being stirred. So one thing we accept, and the same thing we do not accept. That is the biggest problem in the world: gossiping and placing wrong pictures in your consciousness. Then your mind, your intellect, begins to support those wrong things. So you accept or you do not accept. What changes in you? It changes you and brings disturbances. It creates negative vṛttis, and negative vṛttis are like lemon in water, in milk. The milk is your spiritual sādhanā; the milk is the spirituality you gain through your spiritual practice: mantras, prayers, meditations, āsanas, prāṇāyāmas, positive thinking, living a loving and harmonious life. The lemon is those drops you receive from outside gossip. It is a pity that the milk is spoiled. Nagy kár, hogy a tej tönkre van téve. Spoiled milk is nearly impossible to restore. How can you make a nice cream coffee from spoiled milk? És hogyha a tej már egyszer el... If the milk is spoiled, it will be difficult to use it in its original, pure form—for example, to make fine coffee with milk. At best, you can try to make cheese from it. In German, they say alles Käse; if something is stupid, then it's "all cheese." Therefore, one stupid thought, one stupid person, can destroy all your spiritual sādhanā, which you built over years and years with great confidence and love. One stupid thought, one stupid person, can destroy the fruits of the spiritual seed you nurtured for years with great devotion. Do you know the story of Lord Śiva and Pārvatī? There was a ṛṣi called Nārada, famous for his politics. He knew how to make diplomacy and make people fight, then bring them together again. He thought, "Pārvatī and Śiva love each other so much; they have such a deep relationship." He was jealous, and when you are jealous, you try to destroy someone's relations. When something negative happens, the jealous person is so happy; on that day, this person eats two more breads. A man left his wife for another woman, and his ex-wife could not sleep out of jealousy. She went for a psychiatric or psychological consultation. She could not sleep, even with medicine or sleeping tablets. The psychologist asked her many questions. "What are you thinking before going to sleep?" Every time, she said something bad about the lady with her husband. She said, "If I sleep, I dream she is fawning over him, and I wake up so angry." She said, "Every time I go to sleep, I think she is calling my husband, and at that moment I become so angry." The psychologist realized how to make her sleep. Next time, he told her, "Please don't tell anybody. Just for your information: your ex-husband and this lady are together like a goat and a tiger. He bit her yesterday. She is in the hospital, and he is at the police station." She went home. The next day, she phoned the psychologist: "Dear doctor, what miracle happened? I slept for eleven hours today without sleeping tablets." He said, "Well, I started a new therapy." She said, "Please, can you continue this therapy with me?" So a jealous person, a vindictive negative thinker, always thinks negatively. The thoughts of a jealous person are destructive towards others. To be jealous is the biggest karmic illness. God protect us from jealousy. Jealousy is not only between husband and wife or boy and girl; there can be spiritual jealousy on a large scale, from one religion to another. That is sectarianism. "They eat meat, drink alcohol. Are they vegetarians? Are they meditating? Why are they writing so negatively?" This is jealousy. In modern life, it is a new trend to destroy a company by destroying its leaders. Poste tendencia, da su ništi neka kompanija, ili menadžeri te kompanije. To start negative humor is, in modern civilization, one of the best weapons to destroy someone with a negative rumor. They say the best way to kill someone is to spread negative news. This is jealousy—economic jealousy, jealousy of age, jealousy of beauty, jealousy of success. There are many kinds, but this is an illness that has infected nearly all creatures. Even plants are jealous; stones are jealous. When they have power, they try to dominate across different constellations. Therefore, humans have intellect. Humans know what is a destructive thought and what is not. So humans can avoid, because humans understand. Humans can avoid, forgive, and correct—changing the negative into positive. Nārada was jealous of Śiva and Pārvatī and wanted to create disharmony in their relationship, but carefully. He went to Pārvatī, speaking very nicely about Śiva because he knew she loved him, until her heart was completely melted. Then he said, "But you know, we do not understand him. We think he loves only Pārvatī, but there are many other bhaktas; he has no time for Pārvatī at all. He only uses you; when he needs something, he is nice to you." This is blackmailing. When someone begins to talk like this, you should stop the discussion. Say, "Let's read the Līlāmṛta," or say, "Good night," or meditate and put on the Guru Gītā cassette. He created doubts in her. He told her, "Do not go near him. His body is full of poison. You know, he drank the poison when the devas and rākṣasas were churning the ocean; nectar came, and poison came. If you touch his body, there is a transcendental process; you will be poisoned. His body is so bitter. Have you ever tasted his body with your tongue? No. You see, in the middle of the tongue, there is a special cakra—not on the top, but very deep in the middle. If you touch his body with that point of the tongue, you will experience the bitterness. And as bitter as his body, that must be the love he has for you. For bhaktas, as a bhakta, he gave nectar." She said, "How should I know this?" "Very easy. Tomorrow, when he is sitting on the rock and you wash his body, you must open your mouth wide. Nyisht ki szélese a szádat. Jako tvori usta. Until the middle point of the tongue is out. Amíg a nyervet középső része is ki nem ér a szádból. Dokne iz plazis jezik do sredine, and test his shoulder. És izlened meg a vállát. I dotakni mu rame. But carefully. De óvatosan. Ali oprezno. If he sees... Ha hisse veszi. Jako on to vidi. He will kill you." Pārvatī was prepared. That is called brainwashing; whatever confidence you had inside is washed away. Then he went to Śiva. "Lord Śiva, how divine You are!" until Śiva melted. "And Pārvatī—oh, such a holy, divine being. She loves you, Lord. No one in this universe loves you as greatly as Pārvatī does." Śiva melted in his heart. When Śiva was completely melted, when Nārada had nearly entered his heart, then he said, "But my Lord, one thing I do not understand." "What?" "But still, why does she want to kill you? I do not know; I heard. I do not know, but I heard that she wants to eat you, that she hates you so much. I cannot understand how these two things can exist together: love and hate. But Lord, that is your māyā; you can make hate and love coexist. I have heard: tomorrow is your last bath. But you are the Lord, knower of all three—past, present, and future. You must know. Tomorrow, during the bath, she will attack your right shoulder with such a wide-open mouth—not a little, very wide. If you survive in that constellation, then we will be okay. Otherwise, the whole universe will collapse. But she is well-informed. If you notice and take care, she will not do it. So you should play innocently, but as soon as she opens her mouth, better you escape." The next day arrived. Śiva's heart was pumping, pounding. What was Pārvatī going to do? Ladies are a thousand times stronger than a tiger because that is śakti. That Śakti can be destructive or protective; that Śakti can be a mother or your death. That is why there is Śakti pūjā, celebration. In your car is Śakti; the engine, the motor, is the Śakti. The motor is Śakti; it can bring you to your destination or kill you. A knife is Śakti. A gun is Śakti. A pistol is Śakti. A cannon is Śakti. Electricity is Śakti. The whole world is entirely filled with Śakti. Śakti is ruling; ladies are governing the world, not the men. Men are only the guards. You see, Śakti is divine, merciful, and great. If electricity goes out for one minute, how many millions or billions of forints are lost? All factories stop; all hospitals, the lifts, instruments; all cars stop where they are. And this can save our life. So this world is full of Śakti, and we should know how to deal with it. Śiva was well-informed. Even if Śiva wanted to think differently, he could not. Such black marks in your consciousness immediately create a border—the border of your tolerance. Even if he began to think nicely about Pārvatī—"No, she has no power; she cannot do anything to me; she loves me; she is one with me"—still, in his fantasy, he saw her wide-open mouth, and already he felt his shoulder bitten by her. That shoulder was already damaged a little, like when someone receives a death sentence; before being brought to that room, the person has already died emotionally. She was sitting on the rock. Pārvatī came with a bucket of water, putting water on his body to wash. His right shoulder was trembling. A jogva is trembling. She asked Śiva, "Lord, is this water too cold?" "No." "Then why is your shoulder a little bit slumped today?" He said, "No, it is okay." And Śiva thought, "So she said, 'Do not worry, it will be okay.'" She rubbed more and more, and Śiva thought, "Definitely, today I will lose my shoulder. Out of love, I cannot say no. And if I say something, maybe I am wrong; I will hurt her." And she said, "Lord, do not pay too much attention to this order. It will be okay." Pārvatī said, "Lord, do not pay too much attention to what is happening on the right side." Śiva thought, "Nārada is right. Definitely, she is planning." So he looked to that side and then looked back to the right side. She opened her mouth wide, and he could see her shadow on the rock. The mouth was opening wide because she wanted to touch with the middle of her tongue. She came near, and in that minute, Śiva looked at her. The complete picture was there, exactly as Nārada had described. His plan was successful. Śiva ran away with his bathing towel, and she ran behind him: "Lord, what happened? Stop, please." We often saw Śiva running. Često vidimo Šivu kako trči. Često vidimo Šivu kako trči... Śiva and Nārada lost nothing. Nārada lost nothing, but you lost something. It destroyed your spirituality. It took a long time—a few hundred years—until they could come together again and speak about what happened. Then they both smiled. It was Nārada's politics. At that moment, Nārada came. Om Namah Śivāya, Om Namah Śivāya. Om Namah Śivāya, Om Namah Śivāya... Like Tulsidās, Nārada was singing full of devotion. Śiva forgave him immediately. Om Namah Śivāya means, "Śiva, please forgive me. Excuse me, please." And Śiva said, "Alright." This is what we need in our life, and the Lord will always forgive us, but it is a pity. Forgiving does not mean that everything will be as it was. Forgiving does not mean that everything will be okay like before; you have to begin new steps again. Forgiving is a new beginning, a new step. Therefore, you should surrender. And you should care about people; do not neglect them. The greater you become, the humbler you should become. As soon as thoughts of power, of dominating, come into your mind, you will fall down spiritually. A yoga teacher must be very humble. Yoga teachers have to love the people. You should be so kind, so humble, so loving-hearted that people look forward to coming to the satsaṅg or to the class. You have to be so kind, humble, and loving-hearted that people are already waiting for the yoga or satsaṅg hour. Someone wrote me a letter from one of your countries: "Swamiji, why do we have satsaṅg only once a week? The whole week is so hard, so long to wait till Friday comes for satsaṅg. I am longing for that." And some people write me a letter: "Excuse me, please, but I hate to go to satsaṅg. I do not like these people there. They are sitting, all these crazy people. And nobody loves anyone. There are two or three people who demonstrate, and they think they are the bosses. Like these people are also there." So it is that person who sees the negative, is the negative, because they have lost this love. And when there is no love, then everything is disturbing. Everyone is a stranger, and one feels they are against me. This means you have fallen into darkness; your spirituality is decreasing. If your spirituality is increasing, then you will not see like this. So those who do not go to satsaṅg, their development is very slow. And you are not going for the organizers to the satsaṅg; you are going for Mahāprabhujī, Devapurījī. You are going for yourself, not for anybody. Be thankful and feel yourself worthy that you can go to satsaṅg. Someone has to be a little strict; someone has to organize something. That is it. Even if you do not like injections, the doctor has to give an injection. You may think how cruel he is, how inhuman, without any feelings—a five-centimeter-long needle. But the doctor does not think like that; he has positive thinking that you will be helped through this. Therefore, all should be humble. No one should be afraid of anybody. Then your intellect will become very clear and supportive. Otherwise, you will have a bad conscience. And when you have a bad conscience, then bad thoughts, bad feelings—then you are lost, and you search for something different. You do not like that, then something else, and you also do not like that, and then you do not know how to come back again. So you should adopt the technique of Nārada: how to come back to Śiva. You made a mistake, like Nārada made a mistake, but now you come back. The door is always open. Therefore, avoid the kuśaṅga. Avoid this nonsense gossip. Avoid this nonsense gush-upings. Do not talk nonsense. If you confuse one spiritual person, then you have to wait for one lifetime for realization. If you confuse two, then two lives. And if you are talking, confusing a hundred people, then for a hundred lives you have to wait. Jesus, Mary. A hundred lives. Jesus, Maria. And therefore, that is why everything comes to you, so you should be aware of your actions. What happens to you will happen to you. Što se može vama dogoditi vaših osobnih stvari. To confuse someone, to misguide someone, means you are killing that person spiritually. If you offend someone, if you mislead someone, it means you spiritually kill that person. It is not ahiṃsā. Therefore, always analyze your thoughts. Be very careful. You should know that your thought will very soon be your word, and then your words will very soon be reality. These are some spiritual instructions for the protection of your spirituality. You will not find a master who is so direct with you, because I care about you. I am not someone who gives lectures and goes away. We live together. That is it.
