The Essence of Gurupūrṇimā

The essence of Gurupūrṇimā is the supreme importance of the guru. On this day, all practitioners pause to receive the guru's darśana and blessings. Serving the guru for a moment surpasses serving the divine for years. True fortune lies in taking refuge at the guru's feet, whether physically or through mind and feeling. Misfortune is knowing this yet failing to act. Meditation and worship are fundamentally directed through the guru's form. The mind is primary; within it reside the guru's feet, the mantra, and liberation. Pure feeling towards the guru and all beings brings true welfare. Physical presence is not essential; connection is maintained through sincere feeling and attention.

"Serving Hari for sixteen years, serving the Guru for just a moment, yet they cannot be considered equal."

"If you cannot physically be with Gurudev, at least keep your attention on him."

Filming location: Jadan, Rajasthan, India

Om Viśvadīp Gurukul, Svāmī Māheśvarānanda Āśram, Śikṣā Evaṃ Śodh Sansthān. Om Śrī Alakh Purī Jī, Siddha Pīṭh Paramparā, Jādan, Jilla Pālī, Rājasthān. You are all warmly welcomed on this sacred occasion. People from nearly all countries of the world have gathered here, and those who received their visas on time have arrived. The significance of Gurupūrṇimā is very profound for disciples, for those who practice yoga, and for devotees. On the occasion of Gurupūrṇimā, all yogīs, ṛṣis, yatīs, sādhakas, as well as the virtuous and perfected souls residing in the ether, pause their respective practices. They come to receive the darśana and āśīrvāda of their guru. Worship Gurudev, the emperor of righteous dharma, Śrī Svāmī Mādhvānandjī Mahārāj, who in his immortal discourses used to say: "Serving Hari for sixteen years, serving the Guru for just a moment, yet they cannot be considered equal." Reflect on this deeply. Śukadeva Munī, the son of Bhagavān Vyāsa Munī, is himself an incarnation of Sarasvatī, an embodiment of knowledge. Śukadeva Munī himself says that one should worship Bhagavān for sixteen years and spend four moments with Gurudev. The contemplation of the Vedas is written within the Vedas and scriptures, which holds immense merit. When the good deeds and fortune of past lives arise, then by seeking refuge in the saints and the Guru, one attains auspiciousness. Thus, fortunate indeed is the one who, on the day of Gurupūrṇimā, turns to their Gurudev, takes refuge, and attains the benefits of sevā and jñāna. And the other fortunate ones are those who, though unable to reach there physically, remain absorbed in their guru’s sacred feet through their mind, thoughts, and emotions, dwelling in their consciousness and mental tendencies. My mother says, she writes a letter to Tulsīdāsa, that here there is no devotion to Īśvara; no one even wishes to hear the Rāma nāma. Because of this, I am unable to leave from here, but my khāulyā—that is, only my body is here; my mind is in the refuge of that Prabhu. The unfortunate ones are those who, even on Gurupūrṇimā, cannot reach their mother Gurudev, yet with body, mind, words, wealth, and devotion, they serve Him. And the truly unfortunate and wretched are those who know this yet fail. In the other activities of the world, one becomes deluded and forgets. This forgetfulness is such that it will cause suffering for many lifetimes. Therefore, O noble ones, only those who have tasted the amṛta truly know the essence of amṛta. Now we have become absorbed in the essence of Rāma; may all the essences of the world become immortal. If consuming them brings sweetness, then may it be so; and if it dispels the bitterness of the mind’s desires, then may it be so. Those who have tasted the spiritual knowledge and the nectar of immortality leave behind thousands of other pursuits and remain eager for their sādhanā and sevā. Therefore, it is said that dhyāna is the root, and the guru is the form. If you cannot physically be with Gurudev, at least keep your attention on him. Meditation is fundamentally through the guru’s form, worship is fundamentally through the guru’s feet, and mental worship is also a way to offer everything to Gurudev. The words he has given as instructions, the knowledge he has imparted, are supreme mantras for us. The guru is paramount; he is the essence of Gurudev in every way. The entire truth is contained in one sentence: the mind is primary. It is the mind that contemplates whether something is true or untrue. Within the mind lies the guru’s feet, the mantra, the root, the guru’s word, the root of liberation, and the guru’s grace. A sādhaka who holds such a feeling, even if seated thousands of kilometers or kos away, is still connected to Gurudev through that very feeling. Fortune is indeed fickle, and misfortune lies in the fact that it sits right next door, yet there is no feeling for it. Profit arises from feeling, not from the object itself. When feeling increases, the gain becomes substantial, and when feeling diminishes, loss occurs. Similarly, towards your guru, towards Bhagavān, towards your mother... If we hold pure feelings towards our father, husband and wife, children, neighbors, and all living beings, then surely our welfare can be achieved. Therefore, dear devotees, this first evening of Gurupūrṇimā is very important, and if we look at it from the perspective of Jyotiṣa, it has indeed arrived in the constellation. The Guru is here, Pūrṇam, you all have come, and you are heartily welcomed. But the question is, why did you come? You left home thinking you would have the darśana of Gurujī, and now that you have arrived at the āśrama, what are your thoughts? Is the purpose with which you came still the same, or not? If not, then come, Bābājī, give the rooms, and also attach the bathrooms. Oh, we sādhus do not get attached; we practice detachment. Attachment is the problem, so we want to cultivate detachment, not attachment—neither this nor that. Because that is what tapasyā means: to endure, to practice titikṣā, to bear all kinds of endurance. So, dear ones, it is possible. It’s a bit hot, and even the moths are coming. It may even rain, but we have come to listen to bhajans, to listen to jñāna, and to sing bhajans. So Gurujī used to say, "O jīva, O jīva, you have wandered through countless births. This jīva has taken sleep for many lifetimes, has been asleep. Now, awaken from that sleep; why are you still sleeping? Sister, wake up, your opportunity is passing by, sister, your opportunity is passing by. Sister, sleep is the shadow of avidyā upon you, in your sleep you suffer birth after birth, sister, beloved, you suffer birth after birth." Glory to Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān, Svāmī Mādhvānand Jī Bhagavān, Viśvaguru Māmān Dāleśvara Paramāṇ Svāmī Māheśvarān Jī Gurudev. For this reason, all the pilgrimage sites are very remote, deep inside the mountains, in some mountain caves where there are no roads, no vehicles can go there, it is very difficult. One could never ascend from there, because those who go for the inner vision ascend from below upwards; that is the path of the citta kuṇḍa. Climbing from there, chanting the name of Bhagavān of Kedāranāth, one becomes Kedāranāth himself. His aura becomes such that he immerses himself in that very aura. Those waves move inward. Because listen to the glory of satsaṅg, the glory of satsaṅg is vast and boundless. Just as an insect, when it joins the waves and listens to the sound, the sound resonates with such subtlety that the insect becomes colored and then flies away. That is the nature of satsaṅg; the one who truly understands satsaṅg attains great fortune. One who truly understands the nature attains great fortune... such is the nature. Now the school children are feeling sleepy. Have you eaten, son? Now will you go, children? Will you go? Oh, Om. Have you informed about the morning program? Oh, Om. Please come, sir. And someone will translate into Czech. Okay. So who will—who can translate from German to Croatian? No, no, he created Deutsch and even Croatian. So you who are going to sing bhajan, sing bhajan. And the food room here is closed. And those who are sleepy, tell Nidrā to go to that house where there is no devotion, Tulsīdharjī said. The sins of Tulasī Purī cannot be cleansed by mere chanting of Hari. Just as in the intensity of fever, the appetite for food disappears, if you keep listening to the discourse but still fall asleep, then sleep takes over. If one falls asleep during Satsaṅg, in the next birth one will have to grow as a serpent. Sleep is indeed sleep, and here too, it is a form of sleep. So I will have the food prasāda first, and after that, in two or three more sessions, there will be discourses on Gurupūrṇimā in Europe. Svāmījī, Svāmījī, we are beginning to sing. We are singing Mārvāṛī bhajans, of course. Why are you leaving? Yes, yes, I understand, I understand. Come here. You will sing, surely, surely. On your birthday, not at all. Oh, yes, please. When will all of you return? May I still sing to you? Or is it already time? Mahāprabhudīp Paramparā, Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa, Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa,... Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa. This is a spiritual lecture about Yoga in the Indian tradition.... What should I do? Is there another harmony? I do not know what it is. Where does it begin? Okay, where does it begin? Tell me. This is a different melody. Sing what you play. This is not a game. Okay. What do you like? Om Bholi Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān, Kī Je, Śrī Sattva Gurudev, Kī Je. Om Bholi Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān Kī Jai, Śrī Sattva Gurudeva Kī Jai. Om Bholi Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān Kī Jai, Śrī Achala Rāmjī Kī Jai. Present, present... Om Bholi Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān Kī Jai, Śrī Achala Rām Jī Kī Jai. Satta Gurū Svāmījī. Om Bholi Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān Kī Jai. Satta Gurū. Om Bholi Śrī Deveśvara Mahādeva Kī Jai. Om Bholi Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān Kī Jai. Botengs hings, hings, yuvaraī klubeśca lageśca lageśca... lage. Yes. After that, there is one hour, one and a half hours free during which tea will be served. It is only on Pūrṇimā, a fast day, and the meal will begin at eleven o’clock sharp. In between, those who... The arrangements for meals will be maintained, and for this, all of you will cooperate. Only those devotees who have the saffron thread tied here for working in the dining hall have the right to enter the kitchen and perform the service. No one else should disturb the arrangements. If anyone falls ill, or suffers from any ailment such as a TV-related illness, then... In such collective meals, many types of arrangements tend to get disrupted. So, you will cooperate in this; only those friends will serve who are meant to serve. You can serve, and on the other hand, there are many other services as well. There is a separate arrangement for this, and for the sisters and mothers to sit, which is written down, and there is a separate arrangement inside for the saints as well, so that order is maintained. Now I will speak in a slightly different language—listen, those who want to listen. To your friends, to your friends... There are such people as well. It’s good that the flower is completely emptied by evening. The one who plucked it worked hard, but found nothing inside—just one rupee. However, the lock worth three or four hundred rupees was broken. Even after coming here, such is the case. They want to give you something for the āśrama. For Pūla Pūrī and Agnī Devī and Maṅgala Maṇī, they want to give you something. But do not give it here. But do not give it here. We offer our obeisances. We offer our obeisances, and you offer your obeisances. We offer our obeisances, and you offer your obeisances, and you... If you understand, then smile. And if you don’t understand, create your own mantras. If you don’t understand how to bring happiness to others, then keep going in circles. We have become from different countries now. We are sitting together, but if a Bengali speaks, we don’t even realize we are from Hindustān. What can we do? Or if someone from the south, from Bengaluru, speaks, we don’t even know. Bābā jī was sitting outside on the train and said, "Fool, fool." To which Bābā jī replied, "Where is the fool? We are not well. People should not bring salt or call someone a fool." Everyone has their own lamp. Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān kī jai, Niveśvara Māhādeva kī jai, Dharma Samrāṭ Sattva Guru Svāmī Mādhvānand Jī Bhagavān kī jai, Satya Sanātana Dharma kī jai. Today especially, I have decided to deliver the message of Gurupūrṇimā in the German language, today and tomorrow for the German-speaking region. Of course, it is not only in Austria or Germany, but there are many people all over the world who also understand the German language. On this auspicious occasion of Gurupūrṇimā, we have gathered here at the ashram to learn. First, we welcome everyone warmly. Welcome, and may your eyes be filled with joy. You, you... you are welcome, welcome... Van Gurujī is invited. Van Gurujī is invited... If Śukradeva is for Munī... If Śukradeva is for Munī... Vedavyāsa, Vedavyāsa... Reflect on the pain and effort involved. Even the sages, munis, and śāktas have emphasized this. Service given for two minutes or even a few seconds is not equal to the service given with full dedication. Service to the Guru—this service to the Guru—whether it is for seconds or minutes, every moment counts. Just like the blink of an eye, then another blink of an eye. For Gurupūrṇimā, for Gurupūrṇimā... Worship, worship... Gurudev, Gurudev... Gurudev reigns, Gurudev reigns... Gurudev reigns, Gurudev... Gurupūrṇimā satsaṅg, Gurudeva, Gurudeva...
