Gurupurnima celebration 2011/ Part 2
True knowledge and cultural saṃskāras liberate the human being.
By birth, all are śūdras. Caste and character are formed by one's actions and impressions. Only one who attains Brahmavidyā is a true Brāhmaṇa. The Vedas describe four types of births for beings entering this world. All beings are the Ātman, which is Brahman. Two types of knowers exist: those who gain knowledge from scripture and those who realize it directly. The darkness of ignorance has fragmented humanity through caste. Sixteen saṃskāras are prescribed to transform a human from a state of bondage to liberation, freeing one from debts to mothers, fathers, deities, teachers, and sages. These impressions lead one from darkness to light. Culture is formed from refined qualities and saṃskāras; it protects society and the nation. One must instill right saṃskāras in children. Human life is given to attain knowledge of the Ātman and Paramātmā.
"By birth, everyone is a śūdra. Only the one who has attained Brahmavidyā is worthy of being called a Brāhmaṇa."
"The one who leads us away from the darkness of ignorance towards the light of knowledge is the true guru."
