Special periods of Shravan Mas

A satsang discourse on the sacred month of Śrāvaṇa and spiritual realization.

"Our planet, which has the living five elements, is known as a living planet due to these five elements: life, water, fire, air, earth, and space."

"Self-realization, or you may call it God-realization, means to become one with that Brahman, in that unity of everlasting happiness."

A spiritual teacher addresses devotees during Guru Pūrṇimā, explaining the profound significance of the Śrāvaṇa month. He describes the soul's lonely journey through the universe and contrasts it with the opportunity for liberation found on Earth through spiritual practice. Using metaphors of rain, the ocean, and stories of Lord Śiva, he teaches that the goal is to move from painful isolation to a unified, blissful oneness with the divine. He gives practical instructions for observing Śrāvaṇa, including Monday fasts and the Śiva mantra.

Good evening, dear brothers and sisters, spiritual seekers, and devotees around the world. This blessing is coming to you from the Holy Land, Bhārat, India, from Jārdhān in Rājasthān. This is the period of Guru Pūrṇimā. Many of you experienced, witnessed, and heard the programs, lectures, and bhajans spoken and sung by many devotees. Guru Pūrṇimā is the day when one of the most important months, according to the astrological calendar, begins. That is called Śrāvaṇa Māsa. First, it is the beginning of the monsoon. It means rain. Rain, which is the life for this planet, is the blood of the planet. The great saint Gurū Nānakjī said: "A tree without fruits, a cow without milk, and earth without rain, similarly, is the life of a human without the name of God." Our planet, which has the living five elements, is known as a living planet due to these five elements: life, water, fire, air, earth, and space. This planet is known as the mortal world, Mṛtyuloka. On this planet, the soul is coming to work here, karmically. The soul is traveling throughout the entire universe, endlessly. There is no chance to develop. There is only experiencing pain, pleasure, darkness, anxiety, loneliness, nothingness, endlessness, without any direction. The soul is just moving in empty space like a satellite. What a painful situation. There is no one who can listen, there is no one who can join you, there is no one who can hold your hands, there is no one with whom you can speak. It is the nothingness that is loneliness. No one is to be blamed at all. Whom are you going to blame? To whom? No one who can listen, or no one would like to listen. It is, unfortunately, a very emptiness. Definitely, it depends again on the karma, which, on this Mṛtyuloka or Karmabhūmi, is something we can do. The vibration, the light, the situation, the pain or the pleasure, accordingly, you are surrounded by that. That's all. There is no willpower at all. There are no decisions. There is no choice. There is nothing to refuse. What this Jīvātmā in this endless universe is experiencing, my dear, we forgot. We forgot. As soon as we enter this mortal world, we forget. This body is not that reality. This body is not that which will remain ever with us, but still, this body is the most precious thing which we can have in this universe. It means that through our spiritual practices, through the satsaṅg, and through the Gurudev's guidance, we merge into the Brahman, into the light. With that knowledge, yes, I am. You are coming out of all these painful situations in the universe. Different lokas, the soul goes through all, through the fire, through the flood, through the darkness. Nothing can stop you. You can even go through rocks, but you are. That consciousness is there, the memory is there, feeling is there, but no choice, no will, no decisions. Blessed are they who could have a nearness to this planet. The soul, when it is coming closer and descending towards this planet, first has that called Jyoti, Śiva Jyoti. That consciousness, that nāda, like someone is calling you. We can put off this pen. Like someone is calling you. Someone is inviting you. Someone is there to care about you. Some hope. What a beautiful, what a beautiful. And you come to this atmosphere of this planet, this atmosphere of this solar system. And then the Jīvātmā, this dense matter which is human or animals, any soul, comes into the atmosphere. And in this atmosphere, very precious, that's called Jal-Tatva, Āpa or water element. Śiva-Jyoti, Brahma-Jyoti, and Viṣṇu-Jyoti all enter through this Jal. Jal-Jaha-Jagadīś, then where there is water, there is God. And where there is life, there is God. Where there is God, there is love, and where there is love, there is God. As soon as we proceed towards this endless universe, towards the planet, our earth, the preparation begins. And we come closer and closer, and we are in the atmosphere of these five elements, which become in our favor, nothing against. Everything is perfectly balanced. Water, air, fire, and earth, equally balanced. That is the first step of realization for this Jīvātmā as the yoga. Now, that was true. When there is a nothingness, loneliness, that's also that you were just alone, one, lonely, but different. That's when Kṛṣṇa from Dvārakā again left this planet, went out. Then all the bhaktas, Gopas and Gopīs were unhappy. And Krishna's close friend, Uddhava. So the Gopīs were crying. So Gopīs are our indriyas, senses. Gopīs are our longings. Gopīs are vairāgya, viraha. And Uddhava is that our friend inside the intellect, buddhi. Viveka. The mind is that Arjuna, and the ātmā is the Krishna. When the ātmā is moving out of the body, then everything becomes imbalanced, and they all pack their things and go. But who remains here in this body, asking the question, "Why and where?" So Gopī said to Uddhava: "Hai Uddhava, hame batādo yog se kyā yog kam hai." Yog se kyā, yog kam hai. Hai Uddhav, screaming. Hai means screaming, crying. So when you greet people, hai. Actually, that is not a good word. Hai, when someone dies, then we say hai. Uske ghar mein hai fargī. Everybody says, "Hi." So there is only "hi" and "goodbye." Jo jaye, wo kabhi wapas nahi aaye. Goodbye means it will never come back again. What is the difference between Yoga and Vyoga? Because in Yoga, you become again one. That's all. Neither he nor you. When I was here, he was not here. And now he is here, but I am not here. Because the street of love is so narrow that two cannot walk together, you have to become one. That's called oneness, the ātmā-jñāna. But that loneliness, that oneness, that is different. Yog se kyā vyog kam hai? Gopīs are saying, "If we are in yoga, we are again alone. And now we are in vyoga, it means separation. I am again alone. So, what is the difference between separation, again, or unity in oneness? Again, I am there, or here is lonely." Yogiyon ki vanme kutya, the yogis are living in the forest alone. They think God is there, meditation and so, yogiyon kī vanme kutya. Viyogiyon ki hirde basat hai, but those who are viyogi, vairagi, viraha is is ki hirde mein hai. In their heart, he is living. So he is one with that in his heart. So that is a loneliness, or that loneliness. And finally, you will be in loneliness. But one loneliness is one with all. That is happiness, unity. Strength. That is a big strength. And there is loneliness where there is no strength. If you hit the door with one finger, there is no strength; you will break your finger. But all five fingers will be together; there will be strength. Similarly, when we are all one with that cosmic self-realization, then there is strength. When the entire ocean is mighty, it has a life. Each wave comes and goes when you stand near the ocean. That ocean is breathing; it is life. Same becomes the steam and goes up, becomes clouds. Each drop, separate, just becomes like a gas. Then again, it becomes individual drops, and who knows where it will fall. But finally, when it again comes to the ocean, that becomes a unity. So self-realization, or you may call it God-realization, means to become one with that Brahman, in that unity of everlasting happiness. That unity of the joy everlasting, where there is no fear, there is no suffering, there is no any kind of quarrelings. Ānanda Ānando'ham Ānando Ānandam Brahmaṇam Ānando'ham. Ānando Ānandam Brahmāṇam Ānandoham. I am bliss, I am bliss, I am supreme bliss. When that supreme bliss comes, at that time, all the borders are opened. No suffering, no karmas, nothing. So this is the Guru Pūrṇimā time, that specially Śrāvaṇa Mahāśaya, that is dedicated to God Śiva. And the first Monday of this month has very great significance. I hope yesterday you made Abhiṣeka to the Śiva Mandir. First Monday. Did you? Yes? Some did, some did not. Who did not? Better do it tomorrow morning. Now he is sleeping. Don't make him wait at night. Okay, morning, take jala, water, and abhiṣeka, mahāmṛtyu, jaya mantra. How is that? 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 can, together, can do the abhiṣekā. But don't do abhiṣeka from that water which you just drank, no. If you have no water, don't worry. Just go and fold the hands, or bring the bilva-patra and one flower, put on Śivajī, Śivaliṅga: "Oṁ tryambakaṁ yajāmahe sugandhiṁ puṣṭi-vardhanam, urvārukam iva bandhanān mṛtyor mukṣīya māmṛtāt." Five times. Tomorrow, don't miss. Next Monday, third Monday, fourth Monday, then already this Śrāvaṇa month is gone. So, those who have this wish, saṅkalpa, Śiva Śakti, that strength of Śiva, the blessing of Śiva, the mercy of Śiva, the kindness of Śiva, the ānanda, the joy of Śiva, that will shower on the bhaktas. Like Śrāvaṇ raining, that's what we call the monsoon rain. Because Śiva doesn't need any decoration or anything, just simply with pure heart call and Bholenāth—his name is Bholenāth. Bhālā means very innocent, like a child. He will give you everything you ask. That's it. There was a little Śiva temple, and on the Śiva, there was a jelari, the water pot hanging, and a nice chain was made out of silver or copper. The pot was out of copper, and one man came. It was Ramana Maharṣi. Maharṣi means a great sage. It was raining, a muddy, muddy street. He had no shoes. He was a thief, so he went through the water and mud and looked left and right. Nobody was looking. And he entered the Śiva temple to take this chain and jewelry with him, but it was a little bit too high. So, with his muddy legs, he climbed on the Śiva Liṅgam, and Śiva appeared. "My devotee, my bhaktas, I love you. I will fulfill your wish." He said, "No, no, I came to steal it." He said, "No, no,... don't die. Your legs with the mud, this is not mud, this is sandal paste for me, bhaktas. And some people put on me only flowers and bills, patra, and money. But you put yourself completely on me. What do you want more? I bless you." So that's called Bholenāth. Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya, Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya,... Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya. Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya, Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya. Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya, Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya.... Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya, Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya! Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya! Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya! Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya! ... Śivāya! Śivāya!... Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya, Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya,... Oṁ Śaṅkar Bhagavān Niveśvar Mahādevakī. So in this month, especially, Śiva gives his time for all creatures, all beings on this mortal world. And especially for his bhaktas. So, on each of these four Mondays, you should fast. You should work. You should make your mantras. Pañcākṣara, the five elements, or five alphabets. Pañcākṣara. Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya, repeat this mantra. So, on this, because Rāvaṇa Mass is that season of that kind of rain, through which the sun, which is around the planet, has the occasion to come in touch with this atmosphere of the Jal Jagadīś, God as water, the humidities, descending on the planet and going through Uddhvija. Coming, the first beginning of life, is called Uddhvija. Uddhvija, Svedas, Andes, or Jarayus. These are the four ways how the all is manifesting on this planet. But the first is through the Uddhvija, meaning sprouting, sprouting through the seeds of the vegetation. It doesn't matter which kind of grass. Doesn't matter which kind of bush, which kind of tree. Fruits or anything, so that's why it's called Anādevatā. Ana. Ana means the grains. The food, the grain is holy. Śaṅkara prāṇa, because the Śiva life is inside. That is prāṇa. Jñāna vairāgya siddhārthayam. Jñāna vairāgya for fulfillment of the jñāna and vairāgya siddhi, to make this sādhanā. Bhikṣam. That Śakti, that Mother Earth, this. You see, when you came, there was still no rain. The field was dry, there was nothing, no seeds, nothing to see. As soon as it rains, you never know from where so many grasses grow suddenly. On my balcony, there is only dry earth, nothing is there, nothing. After three days of rain, everything became green. So it is said, Mother Earth will never lose the seed. It is the mother which is preserving everything. No life without that. And so it comes to this planet, and this is Udhvij, then develops. When the seeds are developed in the grass, bushes, trees, anything, that seed is there in the soil. And therefore, Anādevatā, what in the Bible they are writing, that bread is holy. Do not throw away the bread, because if you throw away the bread, it is a sin. Do not waste the food. Wasting food is a sin. Take only that much, as much as you can eat. You can take a second time. But people have lost this wisdom, this knowledge. Someone told me today in the bandhara, so much food was thrown out, we could have had two more bandharas. They took so much food, they ate only half because they came three times. Eyes have more appetite than the stomach. That was a problem. But it is said you can take it a second time. What is on your plate, do not throw anything away. That is a sin. If one person throws half a chapati away, then ten persons throw five chapatis away. In five chapatis, a very hungry person can fill the stomach too. So, anādevata. So, first water, first comes the space, air, water, and in the water is a fire already. And through that fire, which is already existing in Mother Earth as a Viṣṇu Śakti, that is a fire. And so the seed, then Devatā, and now those who will continue to take this Annā, planter. The life which is coming to this plant through Uddhvija, Then the life begins on this planet. All 8.4 million, 84 lakh different kinds of life on this planet. So in the bhajan it is said, "The bird day and night is singing, she is very thirsty, but does not drink the water which is already on the earth or on the ground lying." Who is going to drop that drop of water? That bird can directly catch that. Only that will quench the thirst of that bird. Similarly, there are a lot of things in the world you can enjoy and have, but only Gurudev can give you that drop of the nectar of the mantra, so that your jīvātmā catches that mantra. There are a lot of books and many things. It is here, lying in the library. You can read it. But no, Indra Rāja, the King Indra, he has to be merciful to drop that down. So that bird came, and there is a particular astrological constellation that is called Aśvinī Nakṣatra. On this Aśvinī Nakṣatra, there is one sheep which has a shell. That shell which makes the pearl, when it directly catches that drop, is one of the best pearls. Other water will not become the pearl. They are always catching that other boondā, other boondā. So similarly, that wisdom you get, this is the śravaṇam, this is the Śiva. And that Śiva-śakti, śakti means his mercy, his blessing, his strength. Like your car has 10 horsepower, or 8 horsepower, or 100 horsepower, that's the strength of your engine, of your car. So similarly, the Śiva-śakti means that strength of the entire universe. And that's why Guru Pūrṇimā is particularly in this month, and this is not only the monsoon season in India, it is on the entire planet coming beautifully. So anyhow, we already have five days, four days are gone. Now, next Monday we will have Abhiṣeka at Khatu Ashram, and those who are here, you can do it every day. It's not only that you do it on Monday, but Mondays especially must be. Otherwise, when you do every morning in Śrāvaṇ Māsa, abhiṣeka, that is something beautiful, Monday and Śrāvaṇ Māsa. So four days are gone. Now we have 26 days more. And now, this 26 days more, it's only 12 days left more, and then will be Devpurījī's Mā Samādhi. So this is a month where you meditate more on your divine energy in your body, to get more inspiration, wisdom, and light in your consciousness, in your Cidākāśa. So this was a three-day celebration of the Guru Pūrṇimā. And then there was also the Bandarājā Mātājī. About that, I will speak on the next satsaṅg. Wish you all the best. You can sit in good air, fresh air, in front of the Śiva temple, and make your mala. Oṁ Namo Śivāya. Oṁ Namo Śivāya. Oṁ Namo Śivāya... Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya Devīśvara Mātā Devakī Dīpa Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān Kī Jaya Mādhava Kṛṣṇa Bhagavān Kī Jaya Satya Sanātana Dharma Kī Oṁ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ...
