To be independent

The Guru's grace liberates the soul from worldly bondage.

Without the true Guru, one cannot cross the ocean of existence. The Guru incarnates to lead beings from darkness to light, granting independence from the cycle of birth and death. Trust in the Guru's name provides protection and leads to liberation, as illustrated by a disciple whose faith allowed him to survive mortal dangers. Conversely, jealousy is a destructive fire that consumes from within. True freedom is not merely political but liberation from inner enemies like desire, anger, and attachment. Worldly conflicts stem from animalistic ambitions awakening in humans. Lasting peace requires wisdom, compassion, and the removal of these negative qualities through divine remembrance.

"Without the grace of the Guru, you cannot cross the ocean of the world and reach liberation."

"O Lord, liberate me gently... and lead me to immortality."

Today is a very auspicious day because India is celebrating Independence Day. So in the whole country, there are holidays and big festivals that take place. And also today, we had in our ashram a very big and beautiful program, and at the same time, Swāmījī has also his birthday, and this has also a meaning because the Guru, the Master, is leading us from the Darkness to the light, and he is the one who gives us independence. In so many bhajans it is said, nirbandhana, like in Guru Sabina, like Mahāprabhujī is saying, Guru Sabina, and at the end he says that without the grace of the Guru, you cannot cross the ocean of the world and reach liberation. And he’s the one who gives us nirbandhan, who liberates us from the circle of birth and death, who takes us out of all karmic bondages. And also Brahmanandaji has a very beautiful bhajan, "Esikari gurudeva daya, mera moka bandhana toradya." So, he says it is through the grace and the blessings of the Gurudev that you can get rid of all bandages and you can be liberated. So, on this day, we have to say our thanks to Swāmījī, who came to us to liberate us. You know, when you look into the prison from outside, there are several people inside. There are not only the prisoners, there are also the guards inside. And if you look from outside, you don’t know who is who. So there are prisoners, and there are others who came to make them free. So the Guru incarnated here in this world to liberate us. This is his own, and own, and own purpose. And I know Swamiji is 34 years old now. And I see him only working and doing, with one aim, not for himself. He’s not interested in having benefit out of anything. He’s day and night, 24 hours, in selfless service for mankind, for all of us, for each and every one of us, to give him everlasting happiness. And our words, it is not enough to tell Swāmījī our thanks. And yesterday, Swāmījī said also, we were singing this bhajan, "Terī bītī umara," repeat always the mantra, the name of God, and that is the biggest tool which Swāmījī is giving to us. All of us repeat again and again the name of the Lord, and this, only this, will make you able to cross the ocean of mortality and reach the shore of immortality, and you will be free. Forever and ever, and in this bhajan, Guru Nānak is saying, "Kāma, krodha, mada, lobha,"is such oro santa jana. And yesterday, Swāmījī pointed out very much this one: inertia, the jealousy. So, through the name of God, all these qualities can be removed, and if you... Alright, I want to tell a little story about this jealousy, because what all religions, all masters, everybody is preaching in this world is: do good, realize your good qualities, and remove the dark, the evil qualities. And in these stories, it’s like... This is a very big ashram with many, many disciples, and they had a guru, but the guru was so busy, also, they could not see him very much and not very often. So there was a very, very ambitious disciple, and he was doing everything, even he never... He saw the guru before, he just said, "Picture that,"that was all. And yet, he followed his word. He followed all the rules from yoga and daily life, all the rules. All of a sudden, he was a master. He was giving, he made his sādhanā. He stood up early, he made his... His asanas, prānāyāma, mantra, everything, what was the master giving as a practice, and the other disciples, they made also some sādhanā, but not so perfectly like him, and they were jealous of him. And the master was already a little bit older, and he was searching for a follower, not a follower, a flower to be the successor, a follower. So he was searching for such a flower in his garden of disciples. And this, the other ones who were not so good in their sādhanā, they were jealous of him because they saw how strong he was in his sādhanā and how he was doing his prayers, his sādhanā, and always repeating the Gurudev’s. Om Gurudeva Namaha, Om Gurudev Namaha, Om Gurudev Namaha. Always, he was repeating this, so they were jealous. And they didn’t want him to be the successor, so they tried to make him disappear. And they actually want to kill him so that another one has the possibility to be the follower. And one day, they were going on the high mountain, they were climbing up, and there was a very big rock, like 100 meters, 100 meters. Deep rock, and they went there, and then they told him, "You are so much believing in your guru. So if you believe in your guru, you just jump, that’s all. And then he will protect you. If you believe, he will protect you. Nothing will happen to you." Him, and of course they were thinking he will die, because down there were rocks and there were very bad things down. So, but this disciple, his name was Bhaktānand, he was so full of bhakti and trust that he followed just what his brothers and sisters... He told him, because he was pure in the heart, and he was thinking, "They gave me a good chance to prove my trust."So he just went and he jumped over the rock, and in the fall deep down, by falling, he repeated always, "Oṁ Guru Dīp." Namaha om guru dev namaha, and he fell down and he stood up, and nothing happened to him, just nothing, because he repeated the name of the guru, and the grace and the blessings were with him. So, his brothers and sisters, hopefully not from... Your daily life, but his brothers and sisters, they again missed the chance. But they didn’t give up, you know. Āsurī śaktis never give up. They are always present in every moment; you must know this. So they were waiting for another chance. And another chance came that one day they had been in a village, and in the village there was a house in flames. There was fire on the house, but everybody knew that in the house there were still some people, and also one child. Inside all, all... People of the house could escape, just one baby’s inside, and it was a house with two floors, and it was already very much burning. So if you go inside now, the house will fall down and the person will die, though they said again. Now this, they saw their second chance, and They say, "Back then, you were so trustful to your guru, so just go, go look. There’s a baby inside. Please, take this baby out. You have to save him."And Bhaktānanda again said, repeated his mantra, "Oṁ Gurudev Namaha."And he just went inside because he was not thinking on himself, he was only thinking to save the life of this baby. And he went inside, he went in the room. He took the baby and he went out, and nothing happened to him. And when he went out of the door, the whole house cracked down from the fire, but him, nothing happened. Not one single hair was burned from him because he had the blessing. And the kṛpā of the Gurū Dev. So again, his brothers and sisters were very angry because again they missed the chance, but they endured, and they said, "Time will come for us." And then time was passing. Bhaktānanda was making, like always, his sādhanā, not looking right and left, just focusing on his aim, and he knows that. Gurudev will give me liberation one time, maybe in this life or another life, and his other friends, they were waiting for another chance. And one day they went to the ocean, and nobody of them could swim, because in India the water is not... So common, especially not in Rajasthan, so many people don’t know how to swim. And they were there on the board of the ocean, and they had, again, not very good thought. And they said, "Now we will give him this. This will be the last chance, and this time we will not miss it." And they told to him, Bhakta Nand, see, we all cannot swim, but you are so much believing on your guru and on his blessings. So why are you not walking on the water? And Bhakta Nand said, "Yes, why should I not walk on the water? I know that Gurudev will protect me, and I know he will carry me from one shore to the other shore." From one board to the other board, and he stepped on the water, and he was walking on the water, and he went far away, far away, and he reached the board of liberation. And there he is, there now, in eternal happiness. And that is the story of how the name and the trust. In Guru Dev’s name, and following his words, are leading you to liberation. And like Supramanya Swāmī said, so good. Follow, follow your Guru. Siddhipnā Rambhagwanā Kī Jai. Abhi, Abhi. Oṃ Tryambakaṃ Yajāmahe Sugandhiṃ Puṣṭivardhanam Thank you, Dr. Shantiji, for a beautiful story. Jealousy and trust. So trust can bring you through, and jealousy will burn in that fire of jealousy. And thank you for the congratulations and good birthday wishes. Thank you. I also thank you, and it is very nice that our dear Mangal Manish is saying the Satguru Chalisa. There is one called Hanuman Chalisa. Chalisa means forty. There are forty sentences or poems which make a Chalisa complete. Similarly, our dear holy Gurujī wrote Satguru Chalīsā. And every bhakta should, in the morning, repeat or read or sing this Satguru Chalisa. When I was with Gurujī, every morning I was chanting. Gurujī was making his mantra, and I had to chant Satguru Chalīsā and Satguru Sevā and Kakkā Bhaṭṭīśī. There is a wonderful, great knowledge inside, and there is a divine protection. Perhaps in two or three days, I will translate the Satguru Cālīsā for you. Also, our Gurukul’s children from our hostels were speaking nicely. Somewhere, someone was so nervous they couldn’t talk at all. And one of our juniors, the champion of our hostel, he’s about seven or eight years now, and was reciting the 15th chapter of the Bhagavad Gītā, so we all... Congratulate him. It is that one has to have a motivation in life, an interest in life, that one can come through, and that can get Sarasvatī, the blessing of Sarasvatī. Saraswati is in the Kantha Kamala, and Hṛdaya Kamala is the Ānandānanda, the Gurudeva, and the seat of the sound is in Nābhi Kamala. So Nābhi Kamala, Kantha Kamala, Hṛdaya Kamala, these are three chakras which are very important for this. So, thank you and congratulations. Dear brothers and sisters around the world, many of you have been watching Swamiji.tv, and there was a live program about the Independence Day of India. Dear brothers and sisters around the world, you know what it means to depend on someone. What does it mean that someone is coming, dictating as a dictator and giving the rules in your families, what you should do and what you should not do? All our brothers and sisters, the citizens of this world, unfortunately, have been witnessing several wars. At the time of the kings, there was a war between king and king, with only one motivation: to take away the kingdom, take away the land, take away the money, and fight for the position. It is the ambition in humans, and the same ambition is in the animals too. When the human gets the ambition to fight for position, for money, and creates or awakens cruel thoughts to kill or damage property and kill people, that means that animal qualities awake in their body, in their intellect. What we call the animal instinct. When that awakens, then the human is blinded and focuses only on that illness. Like a person who has cancer or any other disease, the person is trying very hard to find a remedy to cure that disease. But there is no remedy to cure such qualities, which are animal instincts that come in the intellect, in the feelings of the human mind, and in emotion. Means the ambition to fight for the position, for the money, and for governing the rules. One sees the success or kingdom of others and would like to have that for oneself. So that means even in the time of the kings, there were many cruel wars, torturing people in a very terrible way around the whole world, my dear. Before that, there was fighting for the positions, for the glories, and that is what we call the battle between the devas and asuras. Devas were always for justice, for protection. But asurīśakti, the asuras, were fighting with their ego, with the ambitions, and to govern even the heaven; they wanted to govern the heaven. Similarly, you know that our grandparents, or our parents, or our neighbors—elderly people who experienced the two world wars, what we call the Cold War. The Cold War means there was no compassion in the heart. Millions of young soldiers were killed. Millions of women became widows. Part 2: The True Meaning of Liberation Millions of children were left fatherless. We understand that people had to survive, and that survival was a terrible ordeal. Only when we hear about such a war can we pray that such an animalistic energy or feeling within humanity should never awaken again. Therefore, we say—and this is common in school prayers across India—do you have the prayer in the Gurukul now, Principal Savyas? In every school, children pray: "O God, You are the giver of bliss. O God, please give us knowledge and wisdom." Where there is knowledge, there is no fight. Where there is wisdom, there is love, compassion, understanding, and feeling for one another. One feels the pain of others in their own heart. Where the heart is blocked and is like a stone, there is no love, no feeling of mercy. Such people become destructive Rākṣasas or Asuras or Satans—what you call satanic qualities awaken in them. Lord, give us shelter. We should become sadācārīs, following the principles and disciplines. This remains in the mind of the children lifelong. Unfortunately, in many educational centers or schools, prayers are being removed due to the so-called conflict between believers and non-believers, between atheists and the religious. Those who are grown up and do not believe often complain, "I don’t want my children to pray to some god." This is unfortunate. Those children do not remember anything. Meanwhile, other children grow up with spiritual education—meaning love for nature, love for humanity, and love for other creatures. They can become good speakers and will never fail on the podium or on the stage. Such education is now, in this Kali Yuga, rare. A man once told a very short story about his life. You know, in some parts of the world, winter is very cold, and in other parts, it is very hot. In Australia, some parts of China and Japan, and this part of the world, when we have winter, they have summer, and vice versa. In winter, at the end of the year on the 24th of December, people who believe in Christianity celebrate the birth of Jesus, what we call Christmas. Christmas is like Diwali, Holī, or Rakṣā Bandhan. It is a festival for families, a spiritual festival, where all family members come together at least three times in their life: at Christmas, at a marriage, and at a funeral. But lucky are those who have joint families living close by; they come together, and mostly everyone goes to the elder member of the family. All the young must go, because the elder sister or brother represents the entire dynasty of that family. It is beautiful in Europe with beautiful Christmas trees—not so blossoming as the trees behind me, you see the blossoming—but they are full of snow. Snow is falling, snowfall. It’s so fine, like something fine, cotton or something very light, evoking good feelings. Can you imagine? The temperature drops below zero, and at sunset, every house holds a Christmas tree with nice candles. This tradition comes exactly from the Deepāvalī festivals that we also have; we call it Dīpak Jhāṛ, Dīpak Vṛkṣa. When the god Rāma returned from fourteen years living in the forest, people put up lights and hung fruits, milk, and sweets for the children. So you see, festivals around the world are more or less the same; they are connected to each other. Family members sit near the Christmas tree and sing beautiful spiritual songs. Why am I telling this story? I should tell it on Christmas day, but because of the subject of the independence day of nations... During the Second World War, there was a country at that time called Czechoslovakia. Somewhere in the mountains near the High Tatras, on the 24th evening, a lonely, wounded soldier was lying in the hills. It was a beautiful Christmas night with moonlight and falling snow. The wounded soldier could not stand up; he was freezing and crying. He said to the guard, "Lord, where is my home?" Don’t you know from which country he was? Maybe from Czechoslovakia, or Germany, or Austria, or Hungary. The Second World War was terrible. But it seems he was Czech, and he said, "Gde domo moi?" This became a national hymn of Czechoslovakia—maybe now it’s taken by the Slovak or the Czech, now that it’s divided. "Gde domo moi? Where is my home? Where are my parents? I am suffering. Lord, do you hear me?" My dear, we do not wish such a thing for any country, anywhere in the world, or for any city or home. You can see between the India and Pakistan borders, in the hills of Jammu and Kashmir, how many wounded soldiers are there? Nobody knows. What will we take with us? Nothing. But it is that human ambition. One is suffering, the other is happy. There are some people who are happy to cause pain, troubles, and distractions to others. And there are people who are unhappy when they see someone in trouble and pain, and they run to help. You know, in Christianity, they believe in love and help. There are so many organizations which are called humanitarian work. Without making any difference—any gender, young or old, or from any nation—they are ready to help. Likewise, we have in India many, many organizations, so-called at that time, Dharamshalas. Pilgrims going through the Himalayan hills where there were no roads would find, every five or ten kilometers, some kind of facilities so they could have a tent over their head and facilities for cooking. A shelter for the animals, a shelter for the humans, a shelter for the old people, a shelter for the ill ones, bringing food and everything. But unfortunately, now around the world, this is disappearing because we, the young generation, cannot imagine what the troubles were, how terrible the wars were. We have witnessed a civil war just a decade ago in ex-Yugoslavia. And you know, in other parts of the world, especially our Austrian friends made a movement announced in newspapers: "Nachbar in Not," in German language, "neighbors in need of help." You will not imagine how good-hearted Austrians are. At that time, they helped so much, including our Yoga in Daily Life. Organizations from around the world—from Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Austria, Germany, and other parts—collected many donations, and we sent clothes and donations to the ex-Yugoslavian bhaktas and to organizations to help them. At that time, I made one slogan: helping hands have more value than folded hands. When we come out of a painful situation, a critical, dangerous situation, you can’t handle it, you can’t master it because you are closed in one tarot tree, like a bird closed in a cage. Can you imagine the happiness of that bird when you open the cage and it stretches its wings and flies to freedom, from one tree to another? That is freedom. That’s why every country, especially like India and some others, celebrated with such joy that finally we are a republic, we are a nation, now we are a free democracy. But it can happen that people, out of democracy, become demon-crazy. So don’t think that freedom is for some, and some are still thinking in the same way. Today’s children were happy, dancing somewhere, showing how powerful they were, how they fought, how they succeeded. The dramas the children were playing were not to show aggression, but they saw what it was and how we fight it. My dear, to get peace, it costs everything. It costs a human’s life; even blood flows. Therefore, in the Upaniṣad, it is said: "Sarve bhavantu sukhinaḥ, sarve santu nirāmayāḥ." All should be happy. No one should suffer anywhere. "Lokaḥ Samastaḥ Sukhino Bhavantu." The entire world should be happy. The Upaniṣads have been saying this for thousands of years, but we don’t listen and we don’t learn. The second independence. It is said in Hindi: if you are depending on someone as a slave, even in a dream you cannot be happy. So we are dependent. Someone is financially dependent, someone socially, someone politically, someone emotionally; there are many, many things which have caught you. Therefore, we say for liberation: "Oṁ tryambhakaṁ yajāmahe sugandhiṁ puṣṭivardhanam, urvārukam iva bandhanān mṛtyormukṣīya māmṛtāt." "Urvārukam" is what we call "kakadī," something like a watermelon or sugar melon. But there is another, what we call the Kurkumbar Takrī. When the Kurkumbar (that is called Ūrva) arrives automatically without pain, it separates from that vine or plant. Similarly, "Ūrva Rukamyeva Vandanaāt Mirtiur Mukṣir Mahāmatat." O Lord, liberate me gently like this, without suffering, and lead me to immortality. This is the second liberation. Therefore, sometimes people are happy celebrating a marriage. Very good. But some are so unhappy they celebrate a divorce. Many send me SMS: "Swamiji, I am so happy. It is the happiest day of my life. Finally, I am divorced." Why? Because you were dependent, you were tortured, you had problems. Otherwise, you would not have married. Why did the situation come that you had to get divorced? That divorce means a liberation. Now you are liberated. But there are some who are very happy and lifelong celebrate their wedding day. I wish all of you who want to marry that you should have such a happy marriage lifelong, or I wish for you that you think it over and don’t marry. Nowadays, you are not sure because people do not have endurance. They can’t endure the situation. The ego of a man is so strong that he can’t hear the hard words of his wife. Men try to push the wife down with their thumb, but now the wives also try to push him—not up, but out. This is the situation. Happy are they who can celebrate their mutual understanding, family relations, and social relations in freedom. The third liberation is that of the Jīvātmā, this Jīva, from the 8.4 million cycles of birth and death, to attain final liberation. That is the celebration. We don’t say heaven is a limited space, limited time, after which you have to come back. Brahmalīna means you become one with Brahman. That is something where you don’t have to come back. Then we celebrate that we have successfully come to the Brahmaloka. Dr. Shanti spoke very nicely about faith and jealousy. A jealous man—or woman—will never see your good qualities. They always have the jealousy that "I want to have this, and you will not get." When you want to have, you will not get. You don’t want to have, you will get it. That’s it. Without asking, when you can get, that is something. Therefore, Mahāprabhujī said in one of the bhajans: "Gurvar meṁ cālu saun de, antar jānī meṁ cālu saun de. Loka lāja sab taj ke, kalpa na dhar ke, rāga dveṣa dhar de. Rāga dveṣa Gurvar meṁ cālu saun de, antar jānī meṁ cālu saun de. Unīyo deśa meṁ janama maraṇa, karmakāla kā na hile." Jeevan Mukta Parapatham, Jeevan Mukta Parānandah, Brahmanandah. So many of you know this bhajan. Ādi Guru Bhagavān Śaṅkarācārya said, when speaking about Jñāna Yoga, similarly, it is said, the fourth... And for that, O Lord, when will I be freed from this cycle of birth and death? This worldly suffering—wherever we see problem, problem, suffering, suffering. The burning desire to get that liberation is called Independence Day in life. So, jealousy and trust and bhakti. So, these four, or I don’t know what number Shanti said... They were day and night suffering, waiting for how they can ensure that the person who has trust in his master should die, so they can become a successor. But this is wrong ambition. You see, in the Cold War, those who had such dreams lost. But unfortunately, before them, millions of people lost their lives. Therefore, we do not wish for any nation, any part of the world, any city or society, or any family, such a cold war. It can be in families too, a cold war. So, my dear brothers and sisters, I wish you also a liberation from your jealousy, hatred, kāma, krodha, mada, lobha, moha, and wish you that you find eternal peace, that you liberate. Look within thy inner self, look in your heart, how much fear you have, and look in your cidākāśa, how much darkness and ignorance there is. You are caught in a thorny bush. You are caught in those thorny wires. Night and day, you can’t sleep. God Kṛṣṇa said that he must go to Mathurā. They said, "Don’t go there. Your uncle Kaṁsa is waiting to kill you." He said, "That’s why I am going." They said, "Why?" Because Kaṁsa can’t sleep. If he remembers me so much, that’s why I must go. So concentrate and think of that one on whom you are jealous. Jealousy is the most terrible fire which will burn you. When you get jealous, you lose your appetite. When you get jealous, you lose your kilos. When you get jealous, you get stomach cancer. You get cancer of the solar... or what do you call it? Pancreas. Yes, pancreas. Yesterday I spoke about this, those chakras, how it affected. Lucky are they who have renunciation and let it be free. There was one hawk that got a piece of meat and was flying. Then two or three other hawks attacked him. He was flying up and down, here and there, and all were attacking him. He was tired. He said to God, "Help me, I have done nothing to them." God said, "You have done nothing, but what you have in your gloves, just drop it." As soon as he dropped the piece of meat, all the hawks flew after it, and the first one went and sat on a branch of the tree and peacefully relaxed. So this is moha, this is attachment; this is what we shall drop. You be happy. Let them, let them... kutta jāne or chamdā. Let the dogs fight with their bones and the skin of dead animals. Because dead animals—that’s what they create in them, that kind of feeling. Happy are they who have love for all. So, Independence Day, the national day of independence, is celebrated. And we also make it like mercy, the anniversary of Mahāprabhujī’s Mahāsamādhi day, because that is a day of liberation from this material body, material world, into the Brahmaloka. I will come to you after two days. Tomorrow and the day after, you will have other bhaktas on webcast. Someone will speak about yoga therapy, someone will speak about prāṇāyāma. So, I wish you all the best, as God wills. In two days, I will come back to you. Until then, I wish you all the best and many blessings. Thank you to all the devotees from around the world. I got so many SMS messages for my happy birthday. Thank you. "Deep Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān a key they wish. For Mahādeva kī Mādhava Kṛṣṇa Bhagavān." Aum Śānti, Śānti, Śānti.
