Satsang on the occasion of the 48. anniversary of Mahaprabhuji's Mahasamadhi

Today marks the 48th anniversary of Mahāprabhujī’s Mahāsamādhi, a day to remember and focus on the Guru tattva. The Guru tattva is the highest cosmic principle, balancing the eternal Brahman and the transient world. It incarnates as Nimittāvatāra for specific times and as Nityāvatāra continuously. The Guru is Brahmā, creating pure qualities in disciples. The Guru is Viṣṇu, protecting from negative energies. The Guru is Maheśvara, destroying negativity and granting liberation. Thus, the Guru is Parabrahma itself. Mahāprabhujī was such an incarnation from Satya Loka. He left his physical body on December 5, 1963. Today, focus and fast if possible on this anniversary. The physical body is composed of five elements and sheaths, but the ātmā is beyond them. Doubt and duality cause the soul to lose direction and suffer. One should never think oneself equal to the Guru; remain a devotee. When devotion is steady, Mahāprabhujī’s light stays with the devotee. Offerings are not material; the heart’s pure devotion is the true offering. The Guru came for all beings, not for one group. Blessings are for a harmonious, spiritually developing life without losing bhakti.

"Gurur Brahmā Gurur Viṣṇu Gurur Devo Maheśvaraḥ, Gurur Sākṣāt Parabrahma, Tasmai Śrī Gurave Namaḥ."

"If you have devotion, Mahāprabhujī will always be with you, and this light will go to everyone."

Dear brothers and sisters, we are sending you much love from the divine, holy place, Mount Nanapurna, where we have all gathered from across Europe to celebrate the divine occasion of Śrī Mahāprabhujī’s Mahāsamādhi. Today we are all here having satsaṅg, and Swāmījī will come here in approximately half an hour—sorry, five minutes. Today is a very special day, for it has been 48 years since our beloved Satguru Dev, Mahāprabhujī, left this physical world, and you are most welcome to come here to Nepal, where many, many bhaktas are already present. It is very interesting that Swāmījī was here with Gurujī in ’86, I think approximately, and even at that time many bhaktas came. When Swāmījī came here, it was very interesting that right next to our building, where we are located, there is a neighbor’s house. One Indian bhakta, who had met Swami Gajananjī many, many years ago, received knowledge from Swami Gajananjī and started a yoga course here in this city, Pokhara. When Swāmījī came, it was just the next house from us. So Swamiji said that we should all, if possible, fast today and focus our thoughts and concentration on Mahāprabhujī, because it is a very important day to focus our minds on him. If you have the possibility to fast, you may do so. If you cannot fast, then you may eat something. But Swamījī gave us this opportunity to be here today and to have this darśana of Gurujī and everything. It is very beautiful here in Pokhara city. We are located right next to the Annapurna mountains. Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān Kī Jai, Śrī Śrī Devpurīṣa Mahādeva Kī Jai, Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandajī Bhagavān Kī Jai, Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandajī Bhagavān Kī Jai, Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandajī Bhagavān Kī Jai, Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandajī Bhagavān Kī Jai, Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandjī Bhagavān Kī Jai, Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandjī Bhagavān Kī Jai, Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandjī Bhagavān Kī Jai, Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandjī Bhagavān Kī Jai, Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandjī Bhagavān Kī Jai, Satguru. This light, put it there, connecting from this side. The sound test, good? Good morning to all dear bhaktas of Śrī Mahāprabhujī, all dear ones, sisters and brothers from the world. Many greetings, many blessings of Mahāprabhujī from the holy land of Nepal, blessings of Divine Mother Annapūrṇā of the Himalaya’s Annapūrṇā. It is the anniversary of Bhagavān Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī. Bhagavān Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī went to Mahāsamādhi on December 5, 1963. We, all disciples, all the millions of devotees in India and other parts of the world, are meditating, praying, and holding beautiful satsaṅgs. This year we have the satsaṅg of Śrī Mahāprabhujī’s Mahāsamādhi day with me in Nepal. All the ashram centers around the world also hold satsaṅg. I would like to say something about Mahāprabhujī and what it means to remember and have a satsaṅg on the day of Gurudev’s samādhi. In the universe, in the divine principles, the cosmic law, the most divine tattva is called Guru tattva. “Gu” means darkness, this mortal world, this changeable world which is affected by different yugas—Satyayuga, Tretāyuga, Dvāparayuga, Kaliyuga, and so on. “Ruh” is the Brahma Tattva, Ātma Tattva, because it is said, “Brahma Satya, Jagat Mithyā.” This jagat, this saṃsāra, this mortal world is mithyā. Brahma Satya is the Rūh, and that is what the Guru Tattva is. The highest Tattva balances both Brahma Loka and mithyā. From Satyaloka or Brahmaloka, time to time, these two tattvas incarnate. The incarnation of the Guru tattva is in two forms, or in two ways. One is called Nimitā Avatāra, and one is called Nitya Avatāra. Nimittāvatāra occurs time to time, with the yugas, the same Brahmajyoti, Śivajyoti, Satyajyoti, Gurujyoti incarnating, liberating suffering souls, liberating bhaktas, protecting dharma. “Yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata.” Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa says in the Bhagavad Gītā, “O Arjuna, whenever dharma is suffering, when the bhaktas, the devotees, are in trouble, then I, with my yoga māyā, incarnate on this planet to destroy the negative, to destroy adharma, and to establish the right path—to place dharma and protect and liberate the bhakta.” The same Brahma Tattva or Śiva Tattva or Satya Jyoti, the Śiva Jyoti which represents the Guru Tattva, is Nitya Avatāra, meaning always, every year, every month, every time, everywhere this Guru Tattva manifests itself. But to acknowledge, realize, or understand this—both Nitya and Nimit Avatāra—only the bhaktas can understand, the pious soul can understand, the real seeker understands, in whom the burning desire to realize the Brahma Tattva, to come out of this cycle of birth and death, is present. This means changing the situation, the suffering. It doesn’t matter if you are in the physical body or in the astral body. The pain, the suffering, exists in ignorance, in darkness, in the sūkṣma loka as well as in this bhūloka, on this planet, on this earth. Since the separation of this individual soul depends on everyone’s destiny, the karma, on how their life is existing and how their life will be. Ātmā is the self. Ātmā is the Brahman self. Jīvātmā, this soul, is individual. Ātmā is free from all karmas, from birth and death. Ātmā itself is Paramātmā, the Guru Tattva, and this Jīvātmā is a disciple. If it tries to practice and follow the Guru Vākya—which means the words of all great sages—then it can merge into the Ātmā. Otherwise, the Jīvātmā will suffer. But this Brahma, Svayaṃ, itself, Guru Tattva, that is why it is said in the mantra: Guru Brahma—Gurudev is the creator. What does he create for us? Gurudev creates in us sāttvic, śuddha sāttvic, pure sāttvic vṛttis, pure sāttvic qualities. Gurudev is the creator who creates positive, sattvic, wise, divine vṛttis in us. He is the creator who creates all the activities within ourselves. He motivates the disciples and he leads the disciples. Therefore, Guru-Brahmā is the creator. Guru-Vishnu, the protector, protects the disciples from negative energy and negative effects, and Gurudev protects the disciples through satsaṅgs. Satsaṅg is the Guru-ākhyā. Satsaṅg is that ocean of mercy. Sat Sat... He is Mahīśvara Śiva, and Śiva destroys the negative energies and liberates all the bhaktas, the guru-bhaktas. Therefore, Mahāprabhujī said, “Guru bhakta jagatme nārahe, dūjā paśu śaman kharhe, guru bhakta jagatme nārahe.” Those who are bhaktas, devotees of Gurudeva, have understood the real meaning of being human, they have understood human life, and they lead a positive and spiritual life. Others’ lives just pass, the same as other creatures. Gurudevo Gurur Brahma, Gurur Viṣṇu, Gurudevo Maheśvara, Gurur Sākṣāt Parabrahma. Therefore, it is said, Gurudev himself is Parabrahma. You have to change. Therefore, Guru Tattva is known as Gurur Sākṣāt Parabrahma. It is Parabrahma itself. Dhan Moolam Guru Mūrti, Pūjā Moolam Guru Padam, Mantra Moolam Guru Vākyam, Mokṣa Moolam Guru Kṛpā. Therefore, this is an instruction to the seekers, to the devotees, and to the practice. Guru Brahma, Guru Viṣṇu, Guru Devo Maheśvarāḥ, Guru Sākṣāt Parabrahma, Tasmai Śrī Gurave Namaḥ. Therefore, our adoration, our prayers to Guru Dev, because he is Sākṣāt Parabrahma. Gurudev comes from Satyaloka, Gurudev comes from Brahmaloka, and we also come from Satyaloka, Brahmaloka, but in between we have lost the consciousness or memory of Satya or Brahman. So slowly, slowly, this jīvātmā fell into the mālavikṣepa and āvaraṇa—the impurity, the disturbances, and the curtains of ignorance. This means we lost the direction, going into dark ways, and then we lost everything. To guide, to protect, therefore, Nityāvatāra, the Satguru Dev comes. It doesn’t matter in which form Satguru Dev comes—what you call Nimittāvatāra, Nityāvatāra, saint, holy person, yogī, and so on. And it doesn’t matter who this is to others. All who will enter into the atmosphere of this earth, which is Mṛti Loka, cannot enter into this atmosphere, into this planet, without going through the five elements: space, fire, air, water, and earth. These five elements touch and come, and then layers come upon this soul. And that’s what we call the Annamaya Kośa—the body of nourishment; the Prāṇamaya Kośa—the body of prāṇa, the energy; the Manomaya Kośa—the mind; the Vijñānamaya Kośa—the intellect; and the Ānandamaya Kośa—the causal body. These five layers are over the physical, and we are here sitting as a physical body. This physical body is created out of five elements. This body, these elements, which are elements of nature, prakṛti, and therefore these elements, this prakṛti, this nature, is working in us, in our body. We are drawn to our body, our mind, our intellect, our emotions, our thoughts, our activities, and we are drawn to the natural law. Therefore, this body needs nourishment—different kinds of nourishment: physical nourishment, solid and liquid, and the societies, the atmosphere, the environment. You cannot deny this. So your Kṛṣṇa or Rāma or Buddha or any holy incarnation, like Jesus or anyone, has to eat, to drink, and to supply what the body needs. But the ātmā doesn’t eat. The ātmā doesn’t do anything. Ātmā is not drinking. Ātmā is not eating. Ātmā is not sleeping. Ātmā is not in the darkness because Ātmā is called Paramachetanā, Supreme, Supreme, the highest consciousness. And that Paramācetanya is the Guru Tattva. As long as this body exists, we will have to go through this tunnel, the tunnel of natural law. You have to walk through this, but the sense is compared to a lotus flower above the water. The consciousness of the senses is always connected with Brahman, but the rest of the evil sense, or incarnation, is within the water. Gurū Dev, Bhagavān, Dīp Nārāyaṇa, Mahāprabhujī, who came from Satya Loka, Oṁ Śoham Saguṇa Brahma, Śrī Dīp Paripūraṇa Nārāyaṇa Nāma. Saguṇa Brahma, that same Brahman which is Nirguṇa and Saguṇa—Nirguṇa is formless and Saguṇa is that which manifests in this form, so what in this form, that Brahma, Ātmā, that Brahma, that Brahma... The Brahman, the Self, the Satguru Dev exists, residing in that body. That body has that radiance, that light, which is given to the world as a light. So those yogīs, those saints, may not be traveling around the world, sitting somewhere, but their very being in this world or on this planet is a blessing for all of us. Yes, when you come to this mṛti-loka, then you have to go through certain suffering too. Look, the suffering of Jesus, many difficulties. Kṛṣṇa also had, Rāma also had, Buddha also had. All the incarnations and all the holy saints had to go through certain troubles. Because they took so many karmas of others, and asuras—what we call the satans—they don’t understand the guru tattva, they don’t understand what a saint is, and they begin to create duality. Duality of culture, duality of nations, duality of what are called man-made religions, and many, many different things: philosophies, mentalities, this and that. These are the thoughts by which people divide people, human divides human, but that was not the purpose of God. God came to unite everyone in one place. God tells you, “Believe what you like.” Someone likes to eat apples, but another is allergic. Another one likes papaya, but one who is allergic to papaya can eat apples, and one who is allergic to apples can eat papaya. So God said to adopt and accept how your inner environment accepts and appreciates. But it means you have no right to criticize, to humiliate, or to discriminate against other beliefs, other religions, other cultures, or other thoughts. See God in everyone. That is your duty. That is Satya Sanātana, the eternal law, the eternal truth. So Satguru Dev comes to bring the divine light. Mahāprabhujī came from Satya Loka. Holy Gurujī came from the Viṣṇu Loka. So these are the different saints who came, and they went through worldly situations, but they knew what they were, what their obligation was, why they came here, and when fulfilled, the time comes. Again, jyotī jyotī meṁ mil jātī haiṁ. This divine light, which is in one form, again merges into its nirguṇa form. Nirguṇa is the endless universe, the Brahma Jyotī. Saguṇa is that which takes the form and acts for a wild blessing. So Mahāprabhujī was that, coming from Brahma Loka. His every word, his teachings, his bhajans are the truth. That is the essence of the Vedas. That is the essence of all holy incarnations. That is the essence of the ātmā and the essence of life. If we are wise enough, clever enough, if we think a little more deeply about ourselves, then we will decide, yes, I will follow the footsteps of Mahāprabhujī, the steps, the teachings of Mahāprabhujī. Mahāprabhujī left physically, but still he is with us and with our bhakta. Mahāprabhujī is in you when you repeat mantra, and when you come to satsaṅg, he is sitting within you, and his light goes with you. If you are worthy enough, if you are strong enough, if you have that faith, that light will work through you in the same way. But as soon as you begin to have two thoughts, that light will disappear from you. One thought: now you think you are the guru, you are the master, and you don’t need others, and you try to create one group, separate. Mahāprabhujī said, “I didn’t tell you about it, so he’s gone.” It means that people practice a little, and they think, “I am siddhis, I am siddhas, I can meditate.” Then Mahāprabhujī says, “Okay, you are here, go in the line.” Second, never think that you are already Mahāprabhujī; you cannot be Mahāprabhujī. You can be a devotee, you can be a servant of Mahāprabhujī, but you cannot be. If he is living within you, it does not mean that now your self is gone somewhere and you are Mahāprabhujī. Such people will suffer in life; they will create distraction, they will create unhappy days, and they can destroy the satsaṅg atmosphere, turning it into kuśaṅga—discussing, arguing, this and that. So Holy Gurujī says, “One in all and all in one. If you have devotion, Mahāprabhujī will always be with you, and this light will go to everyone.” So when such a great incarnation, who comes from Śiva Loka, Viṣṇu Loka, Brahma Loka, Satya Loka—whatever you call it—what Gurujī said in his bhajan, “Satya Pat Chalna,” is that because Gurujī talks so much in his bhajans—“Satya Sanātan,” “Satya Pat Chalna,” “Satya Upadeś”—it means that only one who comes from Satya Loka can speak about that. On the day when this divine light—Brahma Jyoti, Jñāna Jyoti, Satya Jyoti, Vijñāna Jyoti—again from this physical body, remained some years, and that was for this light, like when you are for a long, long time in one room, there is no oxygen, you are suffering. So in Kali Yuga, people create such a bad air, meaning the situation, the environment. So then again the Brahma Jyoti goes. For us, it is this: Sat Gurudev came, gave his message, and again he went into his nirguṇa form. Nirguṇ se Saguṇ Banāye Bhaktan Ke Hitkārī. For what did God or Gurudev come into this world, from nirguṇa to saguṇa? For the sake of the bhaktas, for the benefit of the bhaktas, so we remember, we pray, we meditate, we think of Bhagavān Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī. And we are happy that again he is in Brahmaloka, in the light everywhere, and we pray that again he will come. Support all the pure souls, support all the bhaktas, and we pray that he should always be with us, and that is very important. So, especially this day for us is that Mahāprabhujī again manifested or merged into the entire Brahman, and we are happy that we could have his darśan, or we could have his knowledge and wisdom. We thank Mahāprabhujī. What can we thank? We have nothing to thank. What can we thank? How much can we thank? Gurudev, you have given everything. When you have given everything, what can I give you? Just, I give you my heart with both folded hands. Heart means our devotion. Heart means our pure bhakti. And that Gurudev knows, and he will receive it. When it goes into the heart, into the viveka and the intellect, and when duality, doubts, and darkness appear, then we are destroyed. Then, what do we call it when you go up and you fall from up to down? The higher you are when falling down, the more you will hurt and the more pain you will feel. So, we pray to Gurudeva to protect us all, all the pure souls and bhaktas around the whole world, because Gurudeva is not incarnated for one village, not for one family, not for one country, but for all. Because in Gurudeva is the Viśva itself, the entire universe. Vasudeva Kutumbakam, the entire world is a family of one God, one creator, one Brahman. So, my dear ones, devotees, bhaktas of God, Mahāprabhujī’s or any holy saints, I bless you in their name and wish you a happy, healthy, harmonious life and spiritual development. Do not step out of your bhakti. Do not let any doubts enter your mind. That is the most terrible thing that can happen to a human. Many things happen, good and bad. Many tragedies happen in life. But the most dangerous and most terrible tragedy is that a human loses confidence and devotion, that a human will die without ātmā jñāna. Therefore, I wish you all the best, and whatever you believe, whatever you work on, wherever you are, whichever religion, whichever master, I wish you all the best and success. God bless you. With this, my dear ones, maybe we will come again on the webcast, and I will be with you, Viśvakānt. Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān Kī Jai, Śrī Śrī Devīśvara Mahādeva Kī Jai, Mādhava Kṛṣṇa Bhagavān Kī Jai, Satya Sanātana Dharma Kī Jai. You know that around the whole world, people are celebrating Mahāprabhujī’s divine life, and you are also with us. Hari Om. Therefore, it is a beautiful bhajan: “Prakāśa Pūṇa Amṛta Ke Sāgara Śrī Dīpa Hari Mahādāhī.” Śrī Devpurījī, Mahādeva, Kī Jāya, Śrī Dant Swāmratā, Guru Swāmī Madhavānanda Jī, Bhagavān, Kī Jāya, Viśvaguru, Mahāmaṇḍaleśvarānanda, Śrī Swāmī Maheśvarānanda Jī, Guru Deva, Kī Jāya.
