Satsang on the occasion of the 48. anniversary of Mahaprabhuji's Mahasamadhi

The Guru Tattva is the highest divine principle, balancing the eternal truth and the illusory world. This principle incarnates in two ways: the Nimittāvatāra appears in specific times to protect dharma and liberate souls, while the Nityāvatāra is an ever-present manifestation. The individual soul originates from the pure realms but becomes enveloped by ignorance and the layers of the five elements. The Guru, as Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva, creates positive qualities within, protects the disciple, and destroys negativity. The divine incarnations take form to benefit devotees, endure worldly suffering, and ultimately merge back into the formless light. One must follow the teachings without egoic identification, seeing the divine unity in all, and maintain unwavering devotion.

"Guru Brahmā is the creator who creates positive sāttvic, wise, divine vṛttis in us."

"See God in everyone. That is your duty. That is the Satya Sanātana, the eternal law."

Hari Om, dear brothers and sisters. We send you much love from the divine, holy place of Mount Annapurnā, where we have all gathered from across Europe to celebrate the divine occasion of Śrī Mahāprabhujī’s Mahāsamādhi. We are all here having satsaṅg, and Swāmījī will join us in approximately five minutes. Today is a very special day, marking 48 years since our beloved Sattva Gurudev, Mahāprabhujī, left this physical world. You are all most welcome to come to Nepal, where many, many bhaktas are already present. It is very interesting that Swāmījī was here with Gurujī around 1986, and even at that time, many, many bhaktas had come. Also, when Swāmījī came here, it was interesting that right next to our building, in a neighbor’s house, there was an Indian bhakta who had met Swami Gajānandjī many years ago. He received knowledge from Swami Gajānandjī and started a yoga course here in Pokhara. When Swāmījī came, it was right next to our houses. Swāmījī said that we should all, if possible, fast today and concentrate our thinking on Mahāprabhujī, as it is a very important day to focus our minds on Him. If you have the possibility to fast, it is good. If you cannot, then perhaps you can eat something. Swāmījī has given us this opportunity to be here today and to have this darśan of Gurujī. It is very beautiful here in Pokhara city; we are located right next to the Annapurnā mountains, perhaps 15 kilometers away, and there are many holy places around. You are all most welcome to come here to be with Swāmījī. Param tasmai śrī dhyāna-mūlaṁ gurur-mūrtiḥ pūjā-mūlaṁ padaṁ maṇḍākyaṁ tripā brahmānandaṁ. Param śukhalam kevalam dhyāna-mūrti vandatitam magagan sadṛśam tasmāsyādi lakṣam ekam. Good morning to all dear bhaktas of Śrī Mahāprabhujī, all dear sisters and brothers from around the world. Many greetings and many blessings of Mahāprabhujī from the holy land of Nepal, with the blessings of Divine Mother Annapurnā of the Himalayas. Today is the anniversary of Bhagavān Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī, who went to Mahāsamādhi on the 5th of December, 1963. We, all disciples and the millions of devotees in India and other parts of the world, are meditating, praying, and having beautiful satsaṅgs. This year, we are having the satsaṅg for Śrī Mahāprabhujī’s Mahāsamādhi day with me in Nepal. All the ashram centers around the world are also having satsaṅg. I would like to say something about Mahāprabhujī and what it means to remember and have a satsaṅg on the day of Gurudev’s samādhi. In the universe, within the divine principles and cosmic law, the most divine tattva is called Guru Tattva. "Guru" means the darkness, or this mortal, changeable world affected by different Yugas—Satya Yuga, Tretā Yuga, Dvāpara Yuga, Kali Yuga, and so on. "Ru" is the Brahma Tattva, the Satya Tattva, because it is said, "Brahma Satya, Jagat Mithyā." This Jagat, this Saṃsāra, this mortal world is Mithyā. Brahma Satya is the "Ru," and that is what the Guru Tattva is. The highest Tattva balances both the Brahmaloka and the Mithyā. From Satyaloka or Brahmaloka, this Guru-tattva incarnates from time to time. The incarnation of the Guru-tattva occurs in two ways: one is called Nimittāvatāra and the other Nityāvatāra. Nimittāvatāra occurs from time to time in the Yugas. The same Brahma Jyoti, the Śiva Jyoti, the Satya Jyoti, the Guru Jyoti incarnates to liberate suffering souls, to liberate the bhaktas, and to protect the dharma. As Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa says in the Bhagavad Gītā: "Yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata... O Arjuna, whenever dharma is suffering, when the bhaktas are in trouble, then I, with my yoga māyā, incarnate on this planet." This is to destroy the negative, to destroy the adharma, to establish the right foundation of dharma, and to protect and liberate the bhakta. The same Brahma Tattva or Śiva Tattva or Satya Jyoti, the Śiva Jyoti which represents the Guru Tattva. Nityā Avatāra means always—every year, every month, every time, everywhere—this Guru Tattva is manifested. To acknowledge, realize, or understand this, both the nitya and nimittā avatāra, only the bhaktas can understand; the pious soul can understand; the real seeker understands. It is in them that the burning desire to realize the Brahma Tattva arises, to be free from this cycle of birth and death, which means changing the situation of suffering. It doesn’t matter if you are in the physical body or in the astral body. The pain, the suffering is in ignorance, in the darkness, in the sūkṣma loka as well as in this bhūloka, on this planet. Since the separation of this individual soul depends on everyone’s destiny, their karma—that is, how their life exists and how it will be—ātmā is the Self. Ātmā is the Brahman, the Self. Jīvātmā, this soul, is individual. Ātmā is free from all karmas, from birth and death. Ātmā itself is Paramātmā, the Guru-tattva. This Jīvātmā is a disciple which, if it tries to practice and follow the Guru-bhāgya, meaning the words of all great saints, then it can merge into the Ātmā. Otherwise, the jīvātmā will suffer. But this Brahma, Svayaṃ, itself, is Guru Tattva. That is why it is said in the mantra: Gurur Brahma. Gurudev is the creator. What does he create for us? Gurudev creates in us sāttvic, śuddha sāttvic, pure sāttvic vṛttis, pure sāttvic qualities. Gurudev is the creator who creates positive sāttvic, wise, divine vṛttis in us. He is the creator who creates all the activities within ourselves. He motivates the disciples and leads them. Therefore, Guru Brahmā is the creator. Guru Viṣṇu is the protector, who protects the disciples from negative energy and negative effects. Gurudev protects the disciples through satsaṅg. Satsaṅg is the Guruvākya. Satsaṅg is that ocean of mercy. Lucky are they who can go to satsaṅg. Whoever goes to satsaṅg will always be protected. Gurudev will protect the disciple from going into darkness. Gurudev will protect, as Viṣṇu, this Jīvātmā, leading it out of darkness into the light of Brahman. Therefore, Guru is Viṣṇu. Gurudeva Maheśvara, he is the Maheśvara Śiva. And Śiva destroys the negative energies and liberates all the bhaktas, the guru bhaktas. Therefore, Mahāprabhujī said: "Guru bhakta jagat mein nara hai, dūjā paśu samāna khara hai." Those who are bhaktas, devotees of the Gurudev, have understood the real meaning of being human; they have understood human life and lead a positive, spiritual life. Others' lives pass the same as other creatures. Gurur Brahmā, Gurur Viṣṇu, Gurudeva Maheśvara, Gurur Sākṣāt Parabrahmā. Therefore, it is said Gurudeva himself is Parabrahma. Therefore, it is Guru Tattva which is known as Gurur Sākṣāt Parabrahma. It is Parabrahma itself. Dhyāna mūlaṁ guru-mūrti, pūjā mūlaṁ guru-padaṁ, mantra mūlaṁ guru-vākyaṁ, mokṣa mūlaṁ guru-kṛpā. Therefore, this is an instruction to the seekers, to the devotees, and to the practice. Gurur Brahmā, Gurur Viṣṇu, Gururdevo Maheśvara, Gurur Sākṣāt Parabrahma, Tasmai Śrī Gurave Namaḥ. Therefore, our adoration, our prayers go to Gurudevī, because he is Sākṣāt Parabrahma. Gurudev comes from Satyaloka. Gurudev comes from Brahmaloka. We also come from Satyaloka, Brahmaloka. But in between, we have lost the consciousness or the memory of Satya or Brahman. So slowly, slowly this jīvātmā fell into mālavikṣepa and āvaraṇa—the impurity, the disturbances, and the curtains of ignorance. This means we lost the direction. Going into the dark ways, you lose everything. To protect us, therefore, the Nityāvatāra, the Satguru Dev, comes. It doesn’t matter in which form Satguru Dev comes, what you call Nimittāvatāra, Nityāvatāra—saint, holy person, yogī, and so on. And it doesn’t matter who this is to others. All who will enter into the atmosphere of this earth, which is Mṛtyu Loka, cannot enter into this atmosphere, onto this planet, without going through the five elements: space, air, fire, water, earth. These five elements, touching and coming, then create kinds of layers upon this soul. That is what we call the Annamaya Kośa, the body of nourishment; Prāṇamaya Kośa, the body of Prāṇa or energy; Manomaya Kośa, the mind; Vijñānamaya Kośa, the intellect; Ānandamaya Kośa, the causal body. These five layers are over the Viśāl, and we are here sitting as a physical body. This physical body is created out of the five elements. This body, these elements, which are elements of nature, Prakṛti, and therefore this element, this Prakṛti, this nature is working in us—in our body, our mind, our intellect, our emotion, our thoughts, our activities—and we are drawn to the natural law. Therefore, this body needs nourishment, different kinds of nourishment: physical nourishment, solid, liquid, the societies, the atmosphere, the environment. You cannot deny it. So your Kṛṣṇa or Rāma or Buddha or any holy incarnation, like Jesus or anyone, had to eat, to drink, had to supply what the body needs. But Ātmā doesn’t eat. Ātmā doesn’t do anything. Ātmā is not drinking. Ātmā is not eating. Ātmā is not sleeping. Ātmā is not in the darkness, because Ātmā is called Paramachetanā—the supreme, the highest consciousness. And that Paramachetanya is the Guru Tattva. As long as this body exists, we have to go through this tunnel, the tunnel of the natural law. You have to walk through this. The sense is compared to a lotus flower above the water. The consciousness of the sense is always connected with Brahman. But the rest of the evil sense, or incarnation, is within the water, meaning within this loka. Gurudev, Bhagavān Dīp Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī, came from Satya Loka. Oṁ Śoham Saguṇa Brahma, Śrī Dīpa Paripūraṇa Nārāyaṇa. Saguṇa Brahma, that same Brahman which is Nirguṇa and Saguṇa. Nirguṇa is formless, and Saguṇa is that which manifests in form. So what is in this form? That Brahma, Ātmā, the Brahman, the Self, the Satguru Dev is existing, residing in that body. That body has that radiance, that light, which is given to the world as a light. So those yogīs, those saints, even if they are not traveling around the world but are sitting somewhere, their very being in this world or on this planet is a blessing for all of us. Yes, when you come to this mṛtyu-loka, then you have to go through certain suffering too. Look at the suffering of Jesus, many difficulties. Kṛṣṇa also had them, Rāma also had them, Buddha also had them. All the incarnations and all the holy saints had to go through certain troubles because they took on so many karmas of others. And asuras, what we call the satans, they don’t understand the guru tattva; they don’t understand what is sense, and they begin to create duality. Duality of culture, duality of nations, duality of so-called man-made religions, and many, many different things: philosophy, mentalities, and this and that. These are thoughts. People divide people. Humans divide humans, but that was not the purpose of God. God came to unite everyone in one day. God tells you, "Believe what you like." Someone likes to eat apples, but another is allergic. Another likes papaya. Whoever is allergic to papaya can eat the apple, and who is allergic to the apple can eat the papaya. So this is God’s aid: adopt and accept how your inner environment accepts and appreciates. But it means you have no right to criticize, to humiliate, or to discriminate toward other beliefs, other religions, other cultures, or other thoughts. See God in everyone. That is your duty. That is the Satya Sanātana, the eternal law, the eternal truth. So Satguru Dev comes to bring the divine light. Mahāprabhujī came from Satya Loka. Devapurījī came from Śiva Loka. Holy Gurujī came from Viṣṇu Loka. So these are different saints who came, and they went through worldly situations, but they knew what they are, what their obligation is, why they came here. And when fulfilled, the time comes. Again, jyoti jyoti mein mil jātī haiṁ. This divine light, which is in one form, again merges into its nirguṇa form. Nirguṇa is the endless universe, the brahmajyoti. Saguṇa is that which takes form and acts for a while, blessing and doing good. So Mahāprabhujī was that, coming from Brahmaloka. His every word, his teachings, his bhajans are the truth. That is the essence of the Vedas, that’s the essence of all holy incarnations, that’s the essence of the ātmā, and the essence of life. If we are wise enough, clever enough, if we think a little more deeply about ourselves, then we will decide, yes, I will follow the footsteps of Mahāprabhujī, the steps, the teachings of Mahāprabhujī. Mahāprabhujī left physically, but still he is with us and with our bhaktas. Mahāprabhujī is in you when you repeat mantra and when you come to satsaṅg. He is sitting within you, and his light goes with you. If you are worthy enough, if you are strong enough, if you have that faith, that light will work through you in the same way. But as soon as you begin to have two thoughts, that light will disappear from you. One thought: now you think you are the guru, you are the master, and you don’t need others, and you try to create a separate group. Mahāprabhujī said, "I didn’t tell you about his God." It means that people practice a little, and they think, "I am siddhis, I am siddhas, I can meditate." Then Mahāprabhujī said, "Okay, you are here, go in the light." Second, never think that you are already Mahāprabhujī. You cannot be Mahāprabhujī. You can be a devotee, you can be a servant of Mahāprabhujī, but you cannot be Mahāprabhujī. If he is living within you, it does not mean that now your self is gone somewhere and you are Mahāprabhujī. Such people will suffer in life. They will create distraction, they will create unhappiness, and they can destroy the satsaṅg atmosphere into kuṣaṅga—discussing, arguing, this and that. So Holy Gurujī says, "One in all and all in one." If you have that devotion, Mahāprabhujī will always be with you, and this light will go to everyone. So when such a great incarnation, who is coming from Śivaloka, Viṣṇuloka, Brahmaloka, Satyaloka—whatever you call it—as Gurujī said in his bhajan: "satya pāta chalnā." Because Gurujī talks so much in his bhajans: satya sanātana, satya pāta chalnā, satya upadeśa. It means that only that which comes from Satyaloka can speak about that. On the day when this divine light—Brahma Jyoti, Jñāna Jyoti, Satya Jyoti, Vijñāna Jyoti—again, from this physical body, remained some years. And that was for this light. Like if you are a long, long time in one room with no oxygen, you are suffering. So in Kali Yuga, people create such bad air—meaning the situation, the environment. So then again the Brahma Jyoti goes. For us, it is this: Sat Gurudev came, gave his message, and again he went into his nirguṇa form. For what did God or Gurudev come into this world, from nirguṇa to saguṇa? Bhaktān ke hitkārī—for the sake of the bhaktas, for the benefit of the bhaktas. So we remember, we pray, we meditate, we think on Bhagavān Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī, and we are happy that again he is in Brahmaloka, in the light, everywhere. And we pray that again he will come and support all the pure souls, support all the bhaktas. We pray that he should always be with us. That is very important. So especially this day for us is that Mahāprabhujī again manifested or merged into the entire Brahman. We are happy that we could have his darśan, or we could have his knowledge and wisdom. We thank Mahāprabhujī. What can we thank? We have nothing to thank. What can we thank? How much can we thank? Gurudev, you have given everything. When you have given everything, what can I give you? Just, I give you my heart with both folded hands. Heart means our devotion. Heart means our pure bhakti. And Gurudev knows, and he will receive. When it goes into the heart and into the viveka and the intellect, when duality, doubts, and darkness appear, then we are destroyed. Then, what do we call it when you go up and you fall from up to down? The higher you are when falling down, the more you will hurt and the more pain you will feel. So we pray to Gurudev to protect us all, all the pure souls and bhaktas around the whole world, because Gurudev is not incarnated for one village, or for one family, or for one country, but for all. Because in Gurudeva is the Viśva itself; the entire universe is. Vasudhaiva kuṭumbakam—the entire world is a family of one God, one creator, one Brahman. So, my dear ones, devotees, bhaktas of God, Mahāprabhujī’s or any holy saints, I bless you in their name and wish you a happy, healthy, harmonious life and spiritual development. Don’t step out of your bhakti. Don’t let into your mind any doubts. That is the most terrible thing which can happen to a human. Many things happen, good and bad. Many tragedies happen in life. But the most dangerous and most terrible tragedy is that a human loses confidence and devotion. That human will die without ātmā jñāna. Therefore, I wish you all the best. Whatever you believe, whatever work you do, wherever you are, whichever religion, whichever master, I wish you all the best and success. God bless you. With this, my dear ones, maybe we will come again to the webcast, and I will be with you. Viśvamudrā. Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān Kī Jaya. Śrī Śrī Deveśvara Mahādeva Kī Jaya. Mādhav Kṛṣṇa Bhagavān Kī Jaya. Satya Sanātana Dharma Kī Jaya. You know that around the whole world, people are celebrating Mahāprabhujī’s divine life, and you are also with us. Hari Om. Therefore, it is a beautiful bhajan. See you again. Hari Om. Indian time, 6 o’clock, so according to your time. Thank you very much.
