The Resonance of Oṃ: From the Void to Liberation

The resonance of Oṃ is the primordial sound from which all creation emerges. The ultimate aim of human consciousness is to merge into the endless cosmic consciousness beyond time and space. This is the goal of yoga and human life. The universe began in a void space, Śūnyākāśa, which is the body of the Divine Mother. Within this space arose consciousness, and within that, the energy of Śakti. The divine tendency "I am one, I shall become many" initiated creation. The resonance of Aum awoke from this void. It represents the trinity of creation, sustenance, and liberation, and generates the three qualities of nature. This sound continuously resonates throughout all layers of the universe. Chanting Oṃ purifies desires and leads the soul to liberation. At life's end, the individual consciousness follows the resonance most present within it. The human system has three main channels: the left for emotion, the right for intellect, and the central for consciousness. Meditation balances these. Self-inquiry is essential, focusing not on "who am I" but on "how am I." One must become a light that dispels darkness. You are that Oṃ; your soul is Oṃ. All mantras begin with Oṃ, for a mantra without it is a body without a soul.

"Yoga means harmonizing, balancing, and then uniting the individual consciousness with the cosmic consciousness."

"Any mantra without Oṃ is a body without a soul."

Part 1: The Resonance of Oṃ: From the Void to Liberation Oṁ Nitya Dhāti Yodam Mokṣa Padamche Oṁ Kārayāṇam O Namaha Oṁ Nityam Śuddham Nirākāram Nirābhāsam Nirañjanam Siddhānandāvodayaṁ Satgurutāṁ Namāmyaham Oṁ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ... With salutations to the cosmic light in the presence of the Divine, good evening, dear sisters and brothers. Welcome to you. We are here in one center called the Om Yoga Center. It is very appropriate to have chosen the word Oṃ for chanting. It is a very ancient mantra: "Oṁ Kāra Bindu Saṁyuktaṁ Nityaṁ Dhyāyanti Yoginaḥ Kāmaṁ Dhanaṁ Mokṣa Padaṁ Ca Oṁ Kāraya Namaḥ." Many of you may know what Oṃ is; many may not. I think it is appropriate today to speak about what Aum is, what it means for us, and what we can achieve from it. The Vedas, the most ancient scriptures beginning from the Satya Yuga, tell us about yugas, vanmantras, and kalpas that go beyond our imagination. Billions, trillions of years have been researched by yogīs through their meditation. Time is counted from our human time—meaning our Earth, for every creature, our vegetation, the life of our Earth—and then goes beyond this to all the planets, all the moons, and all the suns. It is said by those ṛṣis: "Ananta Brahmāṇḍa, Śāstra Sūryas, Andalus universe, and thousands of the sun system, all are in one space." So may we call the universe Andalus? That time is counted: the time of this Earth, human time, let's say. Then the time of the goddess or devas, then the time of Brahmā the creator, then the time of Viṣṇu the sustainer, and the time of Śiva the liberator. It is said that even to close the little eye, blinking like this, is billions of years of Viṣṇu. So, what we have is just nothing. I remember one joke. One man asked God, "What is the counting of your time with our time?" God said, "Well, your one second is five million years. My one second is your five million years." The man said, "Oh God, you have such a long second." Then he asked, "What means for you, money, God?" God said, "For me, money is nothing. Have you got money?" The man said, "Yes, a lot, but I don't care." So that man asked God, "God, can you give me 100 million dollars?" God said, "No problem, no problem." The man said, "Then, please give me 100 million dollars." God said, "Yes, wait a second." The time now, when we count our existence, our experiences, our thoughts, our consciousness is beyond our imagination; we cannot reach that level. The aim of human consciousness is to merge into that consciousness which is endless, beyond time and space. That is the ultimate aim of yoga, the ultimate aim of religions, the ultimate aim of spiritualities, and the ultimate goal of human life. It is said: Śūnyākāśa. The word in Sanskrit is Śūnyākāśa. Śūnya means empty, void space. No movements, nothing, no light, nothing. It is what we call dark blue, dark, that's all. And there are existing three. First is the space, Ākāśa, the space, Śūnyākāśa, void space. Now, this Ākāśa, space, is the body of the Divine Mother. Therefore, it is said, first God is the Mother. Nothing can be higher than the Mother. Second is consciousness. Why is consciousness second? Because the consciousness is within the space, not that the space is within consciousness. I want to speak about Om. I didn't forget, yes? But I want to let you know what the Oṃ is. Understand? Now, this consciousness we call Hiraṇya Garbha, the golden embryo in the mother of the universe, is a consciousness. So the universe, though we don't know how far or where it is, the Vedas describe it like an egg, round, and everything is round, everything, from here till anywhere. That is what I understand about Easter time. In Christianity, they specifically present the egg, and the rabbit brings the egg. Of course, the rabbit doesn't give the egg, as far as we know, but he found it, maybe. There is some other symbol; we will speak next time when I come to the Eastern time. So, the space and consciousness. Within that, the third is called energy, and that energy is called the Śakti. So, everything is a play of the Śakti, a play of the energy. So, energy that is balancing, harmonizing, and uniting. That is the literal meaning of yoga. Yoga means harmonizing, balancing, and then uniting the individual consciousness with the cosmic consciousness. Harmonizing the situation in family or in society, balancing all the activities and whatever life is going on, and then achieving unity with the cosmic Self. So, the harmony in the body, the balance between mind, body, and consciousness. From time to time, from yuga to yuga, this śakti, this energy, which is called dormant consciousness... One part is called the conscious completely. So, what is conscious cannot be dormant. "Dormant" means nearly like unconscious, but conscious is not unconscious. But there are levels: unconscious, subconscious, conscious, higher conscious, super conscious, and cosmic consciousness. And it is within this all that our self is. We experience all this. So there is a tendency in this Śakti, in the Divine. And the Vedas tell: "Eko’haṁ bahusyāmi, eko’haṁ bahusyāmi." I am one, and now I will multiply myself. This tendency is what we call nowadays the will of God. "Thy will be done, O Lord." God doesn't have any will. God doesn't have any wish. Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa said in the Bhagavad Gītā to Arjuna: Nothing is impossible for me in this universe. But still, I do karma. I act because all will do what I do. We are living on this mortal world, which means whoever came will go, and whoever goes will come, maybe. What is created will be destroyed; what manifested will be dematerialized again. So this tendency, "eko’haṁ bahu syām," then in ānanda, we don't know where is the end. But in this śūnyākāśa, empty space, awakes one resonance, and that is the center of the universe. And that resonance, which awakes with that resonance, begins to develop the elements like fire, water, air, earth, and positive and negative energy: Asura Śaktis and Devī Śakti. Asura Śakti means demons, and Devī Śakti means the divine or goddess. Now, this resonance is declared as Aum. Aum. Ā-kār means the form, the creator. U-kār means the protector, sustainer. Ma-kār means mokṣa. And from these three, develop three qualities, what in Āyurveda and in yoga and the science of food we call the three guṇas: sattva, rajas, and tamas. Developed from these three, the trinity: creator, protector, and liberator. The Holy Father, the Holy Son, and the Holy Spirit. That we have to understand in this one. So that resonance is called Aum, and that is still constantly resonating in all the layers of the universe. As far as you go beyond the moon or Mars or any planets, as far as you go, you will hear that beautiful, indescribable resonance. Like an echo: I say something, and you see the whole hall reflecting the echo coming back. Similarly, everything comes back. So, Oṃkāra, Oṃkāra, this form, resonance of the Oṃkāra Bindu. Bindu means the dot, a point. From that point, this resonance begins: Oṃkāra Bindu Yuktam, with this entire form, Oṃkāra Bindu Yuktam, Nityaṁ Dhyāyanti, everyday, Nityaṁ Dhyāyanti Yogī, every day dhyāna, meditation, yogīs are meditating on this. Final is the Om. "Kaṁdaṁ Mokṣa Padaṁ Ca." It purifies all the kāmanā, all our wishes, all our negative qualities. "Oṁ kāra bindu saṁyuktaṁ nityaṁ dhyānti yoginaḥ, kāmaṁ dhanaṁ mokṣa padaṁ." It leads us to the divine position of mokṣa, that end of this life, where this consciousness merges into that cosmic consciousness because we have connected our present consciousness with that cosmic consciousness. At the end of life, this soul, the individual soul, and the consciousness will follow that resonance which you have mostly in your memory, in your consciousness, in your mind, and in your heart. Definitely, you know, some people know and many don't know, there is one book existing, Life After Life, or Life After Death. This book is written by one psychologist, and his name is Dr. Moody. He wrote this book out of many, many experiences. People who died are declared clinically dead, and after one minute, two minutes, or something, they came back to life. So he contacted all the hospitals around the world, and he went and he spoke with these people, and he wrote this book. I spoke with him this time when I was in Washington, D.C., and I spoke with him before also, and he said, "Swāmījī, thank you for calling, and so on, and thank you for making the advertising of my book, because I speak in many lectures, and people give feedback. They tell him that this and that, Swāmī." He spoke about your book, and he told me, "Yes, Swāmījī, we must sit together. I have very beautiful experiences now and new stories, and we should come together." So I said, "You should come with me. We should go to Australia and have a kind of conference or a talk." It will be interesting, no? Because he said, "It's not my experience, it's from whom I spoke with, the people." And there is a very interesting book, and still he is researching, and there are some videos that he made. So it means that life follows something. And he told me, "Swamiji, I find that people are telling, one was telling that I went through a tunnel, a bright tunnel." And there I met my ancestors. Some said I went through a dark blue tunnel. Tunnel or tunnel? Tunnel, yeah. You say tunnel? In German we say tunnel, so I don't know if it is tunnel or the tunnel. And then one said it is light, milky light. I said very clearly, read my book These Hidden Powers in Humans, and these are the three nāḍīs. Humans have 72,000 nerves in the body. And out of 72,000 nerves, three are the main nāḍīs: sympathetic, parasympathetic, and the central nervous system. The moon, the left nāḍī, represents our emotions. Nāḍī is a moon nāḍī, and the moon is changing every day. Similarly, our mind is changing every day. "Oh, I like this. Oh, I don't like this." I change my mind. It's easy to change the mind. It's difficult to change your body. No one said, "Oh, I change my body now." No one is this. Emotion and emotion means that we are in the motion. The motion of the emotion sometimes is so heavy, like high waves. So our grandmaster, Mahāprabhujī, said in his Līlāmṛta, you should read in this book, that when the high waves are there, don't dive to find the pearls. If you act, then it is like putting fuel on the fire. Calm, let it calm down. It may take some time. So this is the left nostril, connected with our mind and emotions. The right is connected with our intellect. It is sunlight. But intellect, this intellect is like the sun, changing day and night. Nation Rio plus 20, and they invited me also, and I had also a little lecture about water and environment and food for life. They were subjected, and there were this Australian Prime Minister was there, and New Zealand Prime Minister and was. Spoken about aboriginals, indigenous people and water, and definitely they give the definition of, "We have the problem of the water: the blue water, the green water, the grey water, and groundwater." And we have a problem with all these four. So, mostly the problem is with the green water and the gray water. So, anyhow, we come to the other subject again. So the intellect can be influenced by what we call blackmailing. So you don't know, but you said, "Yes, it can be like that." But you don't know. This one is called the consciousness, the third central nerve. And that awakens when you meditate. That becomes active when you have a lot of problems and you keep calm, deep inhale, because the right one becomes aggressive; it is temperament. Activities, temperament, and making the plans. This is the right one, and this is the left one. So the left hemisphere and right hemisphere both become active or hyperactive through situations. But the center one controls both systems, steering on the proper way. So when you meditate, you can balance your life, and you can balance your family life, and try to understand. Part 2: The Light of Self-Inquiry and the Power of Oṃ The problem is this: many people who engage in yoga, religious activities, church or temple visits, and meditations become one-sided. They become too emotional. You will find that 98% of people who go to yoga practices are very emotional. They think, "Oh, I am supreme, I am peaceful, I love all, I love this." But when something happens, they say, "Oh God, that’s not right." Immediately when the newspaper writes something, they react foolishly. The truth comes out because you are suppressing. You are suppressing. Therefore, yoga and daily life share one meditation technique called self-inquiry. Not the inquiry of "who am I," but "how am I." Imagine if someone begins to scream at you on the street. A wise one will just smile and go away, while a person like me will begin to fight because I am not so wise. You are very wise. A small engine, a small motor, makes more noise, and a big one is always calm. Therefore, we have to rise above emotion. Yoga is good, prayer is good, religion is good, spirituality is good—everything is good. But what did we achieve? Ask thyself. And what is achieved? Then nothing will disturb you. You are like a light. When we bring this light into a dark room, immediately the darkness disappears and the light is there. So you and I, we should become a light. When we come, the light comes from a long, long way. So, it is not "how am I" or "who am I," but to know the "how am I." When the resonance began in the endless universe, a blue light appeared, a flame. That is called Swayambhū. No one has created Him. It is He who manifested Himself. No mother, no father, no seed—just Him. That is called Swayambhū, and that we call Śiva. Then it manifested, and the entire process unfolds. It is said that when the resurgence began, there was a first thought: "Eko’haṁ bahusyāmi"—I am one, and now I multiply. Like the sun rises, then we see the sun’s rays—many billions of sun rays. From one sun ray, more multiply. These are all creatures, the soul, individuals, all the three worlds. They exist in the past, they exist in the present, they exist in the future. This physical world, the astral world, and the cosmic world. The astral world is heaven, which has two parts. One is called good, joyful, and one is called a little painful. But they are the same. When the karmas, the credit of your karma, is used, then you have to come back to this life. On this planet, there are 8.4 million different kinds of creatures created by one creator. These 8.4 million different creatures are divided into three categories: Jalchar, Thalchar, and Nabchar. Creatures in the water, creatures on the earth, and creatures existing in the space. These three have a coming system, the channel, the cosmic channel that appears on this planet, comes to life. The first is also what we call the sprout, a bud of the tree where a branch comes out. It is very scientific: where we have in our body glands, the plants also have glands, and the branch of the tree or the leaf will only come out there where there is a gland or a joint. So there is a tendency to multiply. This is called Udvij in Vedānta, in Yoga, Udvij. Then comes Svedas. These are all bacteria which develop through sweating and through other impurities. The third comes as an egg, like an egg. And the fourth is coming, Jarāyus, like we humans and animals, born as a baby. These are the four doors to enter into this life in three different worlds: water, ground, and space. Now, I told in the very beginning, with this Aum, two tendencies are woken again: Aśvarī Śakti and Devī Śakti, negative and positive. Negative always tries to make a distraction, and they are everywhere. They are in the water, they are on the ground, and they are this for that. There is a particular mantra, so we have all three within us. The water in our body is the ocean, the water, life; the bones, the ground; and the empty space in our body, that is the astral. In the space we live in, within this, we are attacked by this negative energy in every three worlds. We are attacked with diseases like cancers, diseases of the blood, or leukemia, and many, many others, or bones, and this and that, as well as in our empty days we fall into depression. Thanks to God. We must thank you, God. It’s very hard, no? Is your brain... it’s a good one. We are all healthy, and I pray to Almighty that you all will be healthy. God bless you. But these are the negative attacks. It doesn’t matter how they come in. They always find space to enter us, as in unhealthy food, unhealthy air, and unhealthy situations. So we do have the prayers and mantras in the Vedas for prevention. There is a very nice mantra called Mahāmṛtyu Jaya Mantra. Many of you know, maybe you don’t know. Repeat mentally once and then go. It will avoid an accident. There are definitely invisible barriers created against the negative energy. It’s like a bulletproof protection in invisibility. Oṃ Tryambakaṃ Yajāmahe Sugandhiṃ Puṣṭi Vardhanam, Urvārukam Iva Bandhanān Mṛtyor Mukṣīya Māmṛtāt. Oṃ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ. Turn your car key and you go. He said quickly. So there are many, many mantras in these books you will find, or in many other books you will find. So, like these thousands of rays, billions of rays, and one of them is us. Out of 8.4 million different creatures, which are in culture, culture, nature, water, earth, and space, they have enemies also, and there is also against them. We have enemies to fight against the enemy. And from this system of the universal system, we created a navy, a ground force, and an air force. The techniques all come from ancient times, how to get protection, protection. So the best protection is our mantra; we change the mantras. So we are that one ray of the light of the Supreme. And we have to come again into that light. That’s our aim of the coming and going on this planet. So that is so. It means now you are the Oṁ. You are the Oṁ. What is your ātmā? That is the Oṁ. There was one Swami Sivanandjī in Ṛṣikeś, you may have heard about him or not; it was his favorite song. He used to sing with his bhaktas. You can sing with us if you want. If you don’t want, look how we are singing. I will make it like this, then you will change. Okay? I will sing, and then I will do like this, you will change. I will change you also, but don’t change before. I will say it like this. I’m not happy. I’m happy, but I’m not satisfied. I’m satisfied, but I think we should sing a little better. Om Om... Left is Om, friend is Om, right is Om, left is Om, friend is Om, Om... Om. And that simply you can see the way all remember, celebrate, or visualize, or listen to the divine mantra, Om. Without Om, your mantra cannot be completed. Like Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya, Oṁ Prabhudeep Nirañjan Sabduk Vanyan, Oṁ Bhūr Bhuvaḥ Svaḥ Tat Savitur Vareṇyaṁ Bhargo Devasya Dhīmahi Dhiyo Yo Naḥ Pracodayāt, Oṁ Tryambakaṁ Yajāmahe Sugandhiṁ Puṣṭi-Vardhanaṁ Urvārukam Iva Bandhanān Mṛtyor Mukṣīya Mā’mṛtāt. All mantras begin with Om. Because any mantra without Oṃ is a body without a soul. And meditation without mantra is like a statue only, without the life, without the soul. So, that was a glimpse of the Om Mantra introduction. Thank you, and wish you all the best. God bless you. If you have any questions, you are welcome to ask. Om Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinaḥ Sarve Santu Nirāmayāḥ Sarve Bhadrāṇi Paśyantu Mā Kaścid Duhkha Bhāg Bhavet Om Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ... May all be happy. May all be free from pain. May all achieve divine consciousness. Peace, peace,... Ādi Om. Any questions? Literally, I can say, and if I have to talk more, then we have to have tomorrow’s lecture. The soul is a beautiful thing. The soul has a goal, and the soul has to be dissolved into consciousness. As long as the soul is not dissolved, it will exist as an individual. So in reality, as individual souls, we are individual. But when we achieve the highest consciousness, we realize that I am Oṃ, they are Oṃ, I am Ātmā; then we are all one. There is no difference, only the body is different. In this cup I have water. It’s a red ceramic cup, and he has a white glass with water, and the other one has a plastic glass. The difference is in form, but inside it is the same water. But this all is a bundle of the karmas and a victim of the destinies. Destiny is the production of our action and reaction. Is there a talk tomorrow also? Okay, so we will come up tomorrow on Soul, okay? Or do you have another subject? No? We will speak about how the soul is created, how the soul is related, and how the soul can be liberated with divine energy and practice. Some more? Ego is there. Without ego, you cannot live. Evil? Yes, there is. I told you there are two tendencies developed. Devas and Asuras, the evils and divines. No, no. You have a choice to join that one or that. They are both here. You have the two ways. Both ways start from one point. One is called uṭhān and one is called paṭhan. When the sprout, a seed sprouts, it comes with two leaves. One leaf is uthān and one is pāṭhan. One leads to distraction, and one leads to achievement, and both begin from the point of the society in which you are; then you have to develop. They are both sitting in us. The Asuras’ negative energy is waiting to explode. That’s what I told in the beginning: don’t act immediately. Take time. Wait and see. Let the waves go down. Do you have this book? I think by tomorrow you should finish this book, and then we will ask more questions, okay? It is written that both of your questions are clearly answered in this. Do we have? I don’t know. It is easy for me to show you the book, but Gopāla, do you have the books or not? There is one book written very nicely, I just read it today, by someone; it’s called Gopāla. And this is a very, very advisable book. Bring it to me, please. Yes, it is. Show me. It is scientifically very well written: safe, unsafe, understanding modern relationships, field, and guide. It is very nicely presented, like a PowerPoint, you know. It is a good question, Ramyo. In the meeting with the yogī book, which I gave, the question is about the boss, and we cannot fight against the boss. There is one joke that in one country they made a law, and that law is only one law. And that said, they said, "The boss is always right." So people protested, "We don’t want only one paragraph; we want more." They said, "Yes, we have one more." He said, "Oh, very good, what?" The paragraph number one said, "The boss is always right." But if you don’t accept, then go to paragraph two. And paragraph two said, if the boss has no right, then use paragraph number one. So there was one boss and a secretary. They had old-time writing with ink, and the boss was always very hectic and angry. So he called his secretary, and he had to run. So he stood up and ran, and what happened? Unconsciously, he kicked the ink pot, and ink fell on the ground and on the furniture. And boss was so angry. Are you crazy? Are you stupid? Don’t you see? He said, "Sorry, sir. Sorry, sir." And he said, "Put it in a safe place." He said, "Yes, sir." So he put it nicely. The next day, the boss came quickly, quickly, and he kicked the pot, the ink pot. And he said, "Are you crazy? Why do you always put it here?" So again, he put the mistake on him. On whom? The secretary. So we always try to put the guilt, the guiltiness, onto others. We would like to be that without a spot, but we know that we have more spots than others. Mura dekhan ko chala, buran mila koya. Where to see the bad people? I didn’t find bad. When I searched my own heart, no one was worse than me. The bad feeling, bad projection, and bad thoughts are born in you. Maybe it’s from outside, but it’s born in you. As I told before, the light will dispel all the darkness. So be the light. And be the light, and I wish you a very good night. Om Śānti.
