From The Darkness To The Light

A spiritual discourse on the glory and necessity of satsaṅg (holy company).

"Light is within everyone. But there is a lot of pollution, mental pollution, and that is very dangerous. Therefore, meditation, mantra practice, and prayers purify that level of the consciousness where there is pollution."

"The highest technique of this spirituality is satsaṅg. Finally, you have to come to satsaṅg."

A speaker from the Mahāprabuddhi Satsaṅg Foundation delivers a blessing and discourse, contrasting the current age's spiritual pollution with the purifying power of satsaṅg. He defines satsaṅg as communion with truth through holy words, prayer, and positive thinking, describing it as the essential "boat" to cross the ocean of illusion. Using parables, scriptural quotes, and a sung bhajan, he explains how true satsaṅg transforms the individual consciousness, leading it to merge with the divine.

A blessing for you, for everyone, and also for all our dear ones across the world. This blessing comes to you from the beautiful land of the Czech Republic, from the Mahāprabuddhi Satsaṅg Foundation. Today is a beautiful day; we are approaching the lovely season of autumn. Mother Nature has so much to offer us. Mother Nature says, "Oh people, do not kill my children." You have enough fruit and vegetables, you have enough crops and everything. Over the last eight decades, we humans have wounded and harmed Mother Earth. Also, so many wars—that is very sad. On one hand, we would like to bring peace, love, and unity. On the other hand, we are fighting peace, love, and unity. For that, we have to work. First, we should develop this within ourselves. If people would follow and get a little spiritual development, it would not be this condition of the earth which we now see. Jealousy, anger, hate, and greed are at their highest point in this Kali Yuga, in many people's mind and heart. But at the same time, we should know there are more positive people, more spiritual people, and there are many holy saints, whether they move in the societies or they live somewhere in peaceful forests or mountains. Their existence on this earth is divine blessings. We are all surviving due to their holy presence. Their holy presence is the presence of God. But at the same time, there are many asuras or devils. In physical form, we see equality. Looks beautiful, like you all. A smile on the face, but inside is an immense amount of dirt. There are thorns, and there are explosive atoms in their body. But where there is light, darkness cannot come. And light is that light of God, and that God's light is there where people have peace, love, and unity. Darkness has no strength to come near the light. And therefore, we all should carry the light of God. What does it mean? It means to lead a spiritual life. Be aware that you are the light of God. And when you think that you are a light of God, what is your work you are doing? Do you have love? Do you have harmony? Do you have understanding? Do you have peace? And do you have unity? If you have these, and if you realize that you are a light of God, then you will have not negative, but you will have positive qualities. Light is within everyone. But there is a lot of pollution, mental pollution, and that is very dangerous. Therefore, meditation, mantra practice, and prayers purify that level of the consciousness where there is pollution. Many years of work on your spirituality can be damaged by negative society and the negative words of those people within whom that Rākṣasa, the devil, is sitting. We don't know the reality. The reality means self-knowledge, self-realization; that means that you have God consciousness. And as long as we do not have this knowledge, we are in danger. Our boat is in the middle of the ocean, and sometimes there are high waves and hurricanes. But when this boat joins the big boat, then it is safe. And so we are a small boat on the ocean of this Māyā, but the satsaṅg is the biggest boat. And if we join the satsaṅg, be sure that we will come to the mainland, Brahmaloka. Guru Nānak Sāhib said, "The name of the Gurudev is that boat." Jahāj is a ferry. Satguru nām jahāj hai chāṛeśotre par. Those who will come in, they will cross the ocean. Śraddhā kar sevde guru par utaranhār. If with confidence, with devotion, with faith, you will remain, be sure Gurudev will let cross your boat. And that is satsaṅg. The highest technique of this spirituality is satsaṅg. Finally, you have to come to satsaṅg. When you go to the temple, what is that? Satsaṅg. When you go to the mosque and pray, what is that? It's a satsaṅg. When you go to the church for the prayers, what is that? Satsaṅg. And when you come to the ashram, what is this? It is a satsaṅg. Sat means the truth, and saṅgha means to be with. So be with that truth of God, not these material things, not this fight. My and thy, I and you, we and they. That divides the humans, but that satsaṅg, it is where the holy words, Guruvākya, are spoken. Means that words which lead us from darkness to the light. Tamaso mā jyotirgamaya—lead us from darkness to the light. So those words, "Tamaso mā jyotirgamaya," are Guru Vākya. Sarve sam svastir bhavatu—everywhere should be good health. That is the Guru Vakya. "Sarve Sam Śāntir Bhavatu"—everywhere should be peace. That is a Guru Vakya. Sarve Sam Maṅgalam Bhavatu. The happiness, the harmony should be everywhere. These are the Guru Vākyas. Sarve sam pūrṇam bhavantu, or we may achieve the fulfillment. This is Guru Vakya. Loka samastāḥ sukhino bhavantu. The whole world should be happy. These are the words of great saints, sages, and ṛṣis. They were spoken many ages ago. The Vedas have immense knowledge. The Vedas are like the endless oceans. All the seven oceans merge into oneness. And all the rivers flow again to the ocean. All the lakes and ponds represent that ocean. And the Veda said, "O Brahman, I adore thee. O supreme one, I adore thee. Thank you that you give me this bread." This is in the Atharva Veda's first mantras, so these words or those words are the Guru Vākya. Blessed are they, lucky are they, they who can have the opportunity to get this divine sound into their ears. And blessed is the one who has been chosen as the messenger of that divine voice. You could speak in the satsaṅg. If you speak your own stories, if you speak of selfishness, if you speak about dualities, conflicts, about religions and cultures, you are not speaking God's language because God's language is the Guruvākyā. That is the gospel between master and disciple. The gospel between Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna, the gospel between Paramahaṁsa Rāmakṛṣṇa and Vivekānanda, and the gospel between the disciples and ṛṣis, the Upaniṣads. Up means near. Sad means the disciple. That disciple is sitting near the Master and listening to these divine, wise words of the Master. And that's what Christ spoke to his disciples, the gospel. But still, the human doesn't understand. Again, they try to divide because of the power, and power is the most dangerous thing. Power needs control; power needs steering; the power needs to be limited. But in Kali Yuga, there is no limitation. Desire has no limitations. It's difficult. And that's why humans are suffering. So the best way to achieve what we would like to achieve is satsaṅg. In the world, around the world, there are many big conferences, and many conferences are like a satsaṅg. They must not always be conferences about economy, or a political talk, or about the wars. There are many, many millions, or billions, of people in the world who have a very positive way. You look around the world, mostly you will see the people have their spirituality, but they are frightened, they are troubled by some āsurī śaktis, and they are afraid. They are afraid of their existence. They are afraid of their social life. Still, one hundred percent democracy is not there. We speak about democracy, but it's a very little baby, 10% democracy, so not a democracy but a demon crazy. And when the demons get crazy, then they have no aim. They become like a butcher. They become like someone who is cutting grass in the field, and that is bloodshed, a different kind of bloodshed. Therefore, satsaṅg, satsaṅg is the way to Brahman, and satsaṅg is the highest technique, and satsaṅg is the best guidance for humans. You can have a satsaṅg with two people, or you can have satsaṅg only with yourself, alone. What? How? Think positive. Sing bhajans while cooking, sing the mantras while serving, sing the mantras while eating. Say thank you and good mantras. Driving a car, think positive, think mantras, you know? So there is, God gave you everything. So we can do many things at the same time. So finally, it depends on you how you lead your life. You should know that you are yourself. That's it. And you have decisions to come to the satsaṅg, freedom, and practice. We are always on the good way. Therefore, Mahāprabhujī said in a beautiful śloka: Sobhāvo satsaṅgī jāne badbhāgīre jana pāye. Sobhāvo satsaṅgī jāne badbhāgīre pāye. Sobhāvo satsaṅgī jaise kīṭa braṅga saṅga ho, śabda sunāya ika sa. Jaise kīṭa bhraṅgā Hare śabda sunāya, ikasā kīṭa bhāva pala māyā. How is this? I can't read. I didn't go to school. Sing, sing, you sing. Satsaṅgahārī Saṅga Loha Karevo Aṅgamse Aṅgamīlai Parasa Saṅga Loha Karevo Aṅgamse Aṅgamīlai Hare Hare Aṅgamse Aṅgamīlai Subhasaṅghāṭi Kapālamīlejī śudhā gañcanā hoyā chāra, śobhāvo sattā-saṅgahārī, jahāne prabhāgīre janapā, o sattā-saṅgahārī, Jhapani Aayamilevo Bhagīrthike Mājhapani Aayamilevo Bhagīrthike Mājhare Āre Bhagīrthike Mājh. It is a holy place: Gaṅgā, Jharā, Bahā, Lahā, Śobhāg, Satā, Saṅghārī. It is a holy place: Gaṅgā, Jharā, Bahā, Satā, Saṅghārī. Vṛkṣa Candan Milevo Māliyā Garghalā. Hare Hare Swāmī, Deepakahī Satsaṅgase Śobhāvo, Satsaṅg Kī Jāne Badbhāgī Janpay, Śobhāvo Satsaṅg Kī. Bhagavān Śrī Deep Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī says in this bhajan, "What a glory." Of the satsaṅg. Glory of the satsaṅg. Jāne badbhāgijan pāi, the fortunate are they who can have a satsaṅg. There is a wasp, and this wasp turns a worm into the wasp. Like you see one, like a worm that becomes the butterfly, similarly, there is a kind of other worm which can be converted, become, or becomes the wasp. So similarly, the disciple who comes to the master can become the master, and Pāras is a kind of precious stone, is very rare, or we don't know. That stone touches iron, and that iron turns into gold. But those ṛṣis, these stones did not introduce. Otherwise, greedy people convert, turn everything into gold. There was one greedy man. And he went to make tapasyā, sādhanā, and God came. God asked him, "What do you wish, my son?" He said, "My Lord, I wish for gold." "What do you mean? I touch becomes gold. Are you sure?" He said, "Yes, Lord, I will be the famous man among humans, because I touch and become gold." And many people who are hungry for the gold will stand in the queue. God said, "Okay, whatever you touch becomes gold." "Yes, yes, merciful Lord, yes." God said, "Okay, bless you, happy." So happy, so he came home, and his grandchild was running, coming. "Grandfather, grandfather." And grandfather touched the child, and it became gold. The second child came, grandfather came, his son came. He said, "Hi, Father." Also, he became gold. Now he wanted to drink water. He touched glass, and it became gold; water became gold. He cannot drink. Whatever he touches becomes gold; he can't eat. His wife came, and he wanted to say hello. And she said, "No, no." She was running away from him. No one, no one wants to come close to him. He can't drink, he can't eat, he can't have a social life. Anything he touched became gold. His dress became gold. He said, "Oh Lord God, please forgive me. Merciful one, have thy mercy on me." And God came back. "Have you enough gold?" He said, "Even I can't see that. Please, Lord, take this siddhi away from me." God said, "Bless you." Again, his children, which were standing like statues with the gold, became normal again. So the ṛṣis who introduced the paras stone knew that humans would misuse it. And the gold entered in Kali Yuga. Kali Yuga came, and the king who was the emperor on this earth, Kali Yuga came and said, "King, I request you, please, can you give me a place in your kingdom?" The king said, "Who are you?" "I am Kali Yuga." "What is your definition?" And introduce what means Kali Yuga. He told of everything that can happen in Kali Yuga, all terrible things. The king said, "You have no place in my kingdom." Kali Yuga said, "You can't refuse me. I am here, but I ask you kindly to give me a place." So, which place would you like to have? He said, "The smallest one, little one." So the king said, "Okay." What? Where would you like to be? What should belong to you? He said, "Give me a place in gold." Oh, that is very little. Have it, you are in gold. And within no time, Kali Yuga sat on the head of the king, as a crown, and said, "King, see my power? Wait, I will show you the Kali Yuga." And so the Kali Yuga began. So the ṛṣis, they were kind enough, they didn't introduce us to that stone. Maybe we are sitting here, must with a stone, but we don't know. So go with a stone tomorrow, maybe to find something. So Parās. Parās is the light. Paras is the wisdom, but that wisdom and that light can make you only light. The paras can make the iron gold, but it does not make the iron a paras. But Gurudev makes his disciple not self-realized but makes the Guru. So that is the difference between Satguru and the Parās. And this Paras has to touch the iron. Mahāprabhujī said, "Paras Saṅg Loha Kina Pīrvina Palṭā Loha," brought the Paras and iron together, but still, the iron didn't turn into gold. Why? It can be two things. Either the stone was not real, or there was a little distance. It didn't come close together. This little distance is uncertainty, the doubt. Yes or not? Yes. Tak-tak. So this tak-tak is then tak-tak. Tick-tack, and tick-tack means the clock. And this clock with 8.4 million cycles of life and birth. And Mahāprabhujī said, "The street water, the canalization water, when it enters into the Gaṅgā, that water becomes Gaṅgā water." Why? Because it merges into the Gaṅgā. Similarly, individual consciousness has to merge into that Śiva consciousness. Can the Jīva become Śiva? One drop in your palm. How low in your palm is the drop? This is a jīva. Jīva means the soul, the individual one. And when this drop falls into the ocean, that ocean is Śiva. When the drop falls in, immediately you can try to take it out, but you can't. So when this Jīva enters into the Śiva consciousness, you become one with the universe. Shiva is blue, and this entire endless universe, the blue sky, you become one with that. All is playing in you. This aeroplane is flying within you. How big you are! With a thousand kilometer speed flying, and even you are not moving. This is flying in you. Let's call the cosmic body of Śiva all stars, suns, the entire galaxy. That entire galaxy is the spine of Śiva, Śiva tattva, the highest tattva. Brahma and Vishnu, all are created by Śiva. And so the jīva belongs to the Śiva, needs Brahma-jñāna: "Brahma satyaṁ, jagat mithyā." The final truth is Brahman, and this world is the unreality. So satsaṅg is the highest divine technique, what you could do. Shri Pujyā Deep Dayālu Datta, Shri Pujyā Deep Dayālu Datta, Parnaam Charanam.
