Inner Peace for the World

Inner peace is found within, not in the external world.

Everyone searches for peace and happiness. This search is the longing of the individual soul, a part of the cosmic Self, to return to its origin. Our true nature is peace, an ocean of bliss within the heart. The universe originated from cosmic consciousness through divine will and the resonant sound Aum. Individual souls emerge like waves on this ocean of consciousness, journeying through various states. The physical body is temporary, but the conscious self continues. Karma is created by our free actions; good or bad deeds yield corresponding results, shaping destiny. Liberation comes by awakening universal love in the heart, transcending negative qualities like greed and anger. Cultivate divine human qualities through good company and self-inquiry. The ultimate human aim is God-realization, which brings inner peace. This inner peace, when realized, naturally extends to create peace in the world.

Part 1: Inner Peace for the World Tamaso mā jyotir gamaya, asato mā sad gamaya, mṛtyor mā amṛtaṁ gamaya. Salutations to the cosmic light within our hearts, the omniscient and omnipresent divine presence, the cosmic Self. Good evening, dear brothers and sisters. Welcome to you all here in this beautiful ashram or yoga center in New York. This evening, the subject given to me is: inner peace for the world. Peace is a great thing. Everyone is searching for that inner peace, not only humans, but every creature. Day and night, they are very busy trying to find peace and happiness. Where does one find peace? There is a little story. An elderly lady, 95—not very old, very normal. Compared to her, we are still very, very young. She had reading glasses, a stick in her hand to walk, and outside of her house she was searching for something. For two hours, she was searching slowly, sometimes sitting down, then standing up again and searching. She had a good neighbor, so a young man from next door came and asked her, "Mother, what are you searching for here?" She answered, "I am searching for a needle, my small needle I lost." The young man said, "You sit down, I will search for you." He searched for 10 or 15 minutes and didn’t find it. Again, he began systematically to search in front of the house, everywhere, but he couldn’t find it. Then he asked her, "Where did you lose your needle?" She said, "Inside my sleeping room." "Lost in the sleeping room?" he said. "Yes." "And you are searching outside?" "Yes." "Why don’t you search in your sleeping room?" "Because the sleeping room is too dark." He said, "Though the sleeping room is dark, the needle which you lost in the sleeping room, you cannot find outside." So he went with her, and he found the needle near her bed. Now, this tiny needle is that peace which we are searching for day and night, but we have lost it in our heart. If you search outside, you will not find it. It is within your heart. If we find that inner peace within us, then we can give it to others and bring peace everywhere. The nature of our inner self is peace. It is said that within you is the ocean of bliss. Within you is a fountain of joy, and within you is the immortal soul. Kill your little 'I', your ego, and then lead a happy and divine life. Peace is God. What we call love is God, and God is love. Happiness is God, and God is happiness. Contentment is God, and God is contentment. And peace is God, and God is peace. That is the nature of God. What we call God, we all are a part of that God. Since we are part of that cosmic light, that is why, day and night, we search for happiness, to realize that everlasting happiness. And therefore, it doesn’t matter if it’s a human or another creature; day and night they are searching for happiness. Whatever they are doing, they are doing to be happy. Though they search for food only, they also would like to be happy with God. Because what is in them, the light of life, is part of the cosmic Self. Automatically, we are longing to become one with our origin. The origin is God. For example, this piece of matter or material, whatever you call iron: if we throw it into the sky, it will come back to the earth. We explain this as gravity. In the spiritual way, it’s not the gravity, but the longing and love to come back to the origin. So this small piece of metal is coming out of this earth, from this planet. And therefore, it again has the tendency and love from both sides to unite, to come back again. Sooner or later, all different creatures will come to God. It is not a form. The element is the universal, and that universal has no form. I always used to say, for example, the universe, what we call space. We see the space, and this space is endless. We don’t know where the beginning of this space is and where the end of this space is. This space, which is called Ananta Brahman, the endless universe, is like the body of the mother. That’s called the cosmic mother, the divine mother, the universal mother, the mother of all creatures. In Hinduism, in the Upaniṣads, it is said first, Mātṛ Devo Bhava. If you would like to give a definition of what God is, then it is said, first, God is the mother, and that mother is the universe. Everything exists in her body: endless space, empty space. That mother is carrying an embryo, and that embryo is known as cosmic consciousness, universal consciousness. We don’t know where the end is, or if there is any end. And every corner, every point of the space, that endless one, is compact. No empty space at all, but filled with consciousness. Therefore, second, Pitṛ Devo Bhava, the father is God. That cosmic consciousness is known as the golden embryo in the cosmic mother’s body. Between these two—consciousness and space—there is one tendency, there is one energy that we call willpower, the will of God. "Thy will be done, O Lord." Does God have a desire? No. Then why does He wish something? So, the divine will is not like what we think of as desire or wish. There is one principle which is called the divine will or divine energy. This is the energy which keeps together in oneness, consciousness, and space. Like cement keeps two bricks together, that principle is called yoga: balancing, harmonizing, and uniting. In that divine consciousness, they explain the divine will was this: "Eko’haṁ bahusyāmi"—"I am one, and now I will multiply." Cosmic consciousness, the father, declared: I am one, and I will multiply. In which way did He multiply? Through resonance, through sound. That sound, yogīs thousands of years, many, many thousands of years ago, they declared as Aum, which I chanted before. A-U-M, Aum. And this Aum sound is what we call resonance. So within no time, resonance spread throughout the entire universe. The awakening of the consciousness, that consciousness which was in the space, was like dormant. And within the dormant consciousness is that active energy, and that energy is called the energy of the mother. How perfectly the embryo is balanced in the mother’s body, nourished by the mother’s body, and given birth by the mother’s body, then becomes another mother, becomes another father, and so on. So, in this way, in one Ananta Brahman, in the endless universe, many, many different universes were created through that sound, which we may call solar systems within our body or within any creature’s body existing in the universe or in the phenomenon. All are connected with these three principles: consciousness, space, and resonance. Our origin, our beginning, our individual existence is in the universe, not here on this planet. This is just like we are here as guests in a hotel. We have to check out one day, no? And we don’t know who will be the first. It does not depend on whether one is young or old. Destiny is the difference, where we will come to speak about destiny a little bit. So, individual existence comes through the waves of the resonance. Imagine there is a pond or a lake, very peaceful, with no waves on it, very peaceful. And now you take a small stone and throw it into the lake or the pond. What will we see? Waves. Waves around. No square waves, because everything is round. The universe is round, planets are round, energy is round, consciousness is round, water is round, everything is in zero. Now we see the waves in the pond, which are created by one tiny stone, round and round, going one after another, and that was, let’s say, the sound. Which begins to create the waves of the resonance, one after the other, continuously, till now. So this individual one, which is within you, within me, within other creatures—even the mosquito, bacteria, life—it doesn’t matter whether it’s an elephant or an ant, the light is the same, not a quantity but a quality. So, our planet is a living planet, and every creature and every atom on this planet is carrying that cosmic light from the Divine Mother’s body. We are all creatures which exist in different layers of the consciousness of the universe. We are existing now in the physical world, and these creatures are divided into three categories: the creatures in the water, on the earth, and in the space, all belonging to the physical world. They will die physically. There is even a one-day fly. Their bacteria will die very quickly and multiply quickly. They will enter into the astral body, and you will continue your journey. So, your self, your soul—not the divine Self—Ātmā is universal, and the soul is individual. Floating on the waves of creation’s time, or waves of time, throughout the endless universe, sometimes going through light or darkness, sometimes experiencing painful situations, and sometimes happy, not only on this planet, but in the astral world. But still, you carry that cosmic light, which presents happiness, love, or peace. You carry the peace throughout the whole universe. Out of this creation, there are thousands and thousands of solar systems. Every planet, every sun system, every star has a different quality, a different law. And we are here now in this material world. Our world, our planet is known as a living planet. At the same time, a mortal planet, not immortal. Everyone who came to this earth sooner or later has to go back. But where? Death is not an answer. Death is not the end of life. Death is not the end of the journey. Maybe death is the beginning of another journey. For what? To find peace. To find oneness with God, to become one with that cosmic Self. Though waves on the water of the lake are not separated from the lake, they still exist as individuals. High wave, low wave, slow wave, fine waves, but there is no ocean without waves, and no waves without the ocean. We will not say what this is; there is a plastic lying there. So, waves are in the creation, and these waves are the resonance. Death of this body—you don’t die; the body dies. And in reality, the body also doesn’t die, because we see the body as different elements. Different elements are composed by that cosmic resonance, holding together. When we go away from this body, these elements will merge into their origin. Water in water, earth in earth, fire in fire, air in air, and space in space. You are existing; you are existing on this planet in the form of the elements of your body. And it circulates, recycling, recycling. So don’t think that it’s finished; nothing is finished. Part 2: The Path to Inner Peace and Liberation There is no death there; there is no death, there is no birth. Death and birth are illusions. On the day you attain enlightenment, higher consciousness, then you will be above everything, and you will see the waves coming and going. So, through the practice of meditation, through the practice of yoga in daily life, through practicing the positive way of life—leading a life full of mercy, meaning compassion towards all creatures. Ātmā Sopramātmā: my divine self is the supreme self. And every entity represents myself. If I disturb any creature, I disturb myself, and I create the karma. Karma is like a snowball. Our soul is like a snowball. Do you understand the example of the snowball? In Europe or in America, it snows sometimes, no? We have children make little snowballs, and you roll them on the snow. It will catch more and more snow, that snowball. So this individual soul, which is rolling on the waves of time, is creating more and more qualities, attachments, and so on. So karma—action, result, the fruits of our action, whatever will be given to us or we will face—is called destiny. Do good, get good. Do bad, get bad. So we have freedom of karma, which means the freedom to act. Karma is in our hands. I have here this piece of metal in my hand. I can keep it in my hand, or I can throw it. As soon as I throw it away from my hand, it is gone. And I see someone is sitting in front of me. Oh God, I don’t want to do it. Already, it is too late. It’s gone. It’s gone out of your hands. It will target that point which is in front of you, and you are throwing with your whole energy. Similarly, whatever you do, it is done. Good will have good feedback, bad will have bad feedback. Every action will have a reaction, and every reaction will have an action again. So reaction, action, reaction became the snowball, bigger and bigger and bigger. How to become free from this karma? How to become free from these destinies? Destiny will follow us in many, many lives. Does our destiny exist within you? We carry our karma, our destiny, like a backpack, a rucksack. You are an individual phenomenon. Your life is very mysterious. Destiny is there. Unconscious, subconscious, then begins the conscious, higher conscious, super conscious, and cosmic conscious. Everything, your entire life from the beginning in that endless universe until today, is registered or recorded in these chakras. If you believe or not, that is a different thing. Belief doesn’t change reality. These are energy centers, and in these energy centers, everything is recorded, like you store in a computer. Everything is there. Your entire life, from the past until now. In the beginning of this universe, two kinds of forces awoke with the resonance. Devī Śakti means positive energy, and Āsurī means negative energy. And it is a fight between these two forces, and these forces are constantly fighting now too, through humans or through animals. When the human attends and comes to this heart chakra, Anāhata, and opens and realizes the liberation of the tenth chakra, then, the human will awaken that love, so that you will not fight against anyone. You will become free from those negative qualities. That time, that bright sun will rise with great radiance, with great light, and that snowball will melt. So when that universal love awakes in your heart towards every creature, then your journey is ending, and you become one with the universal love. So that is the peace, that śānti, that peace which we would like to realize within our heart, and then we can tell others also, and explain to others also what is peace. Otherwise, I fight for my own peace. The neighbors have a dog, and the whole night it’s barking, and I go and tell the neighbors, "Please, can you control your dog?" The neighbor will say, "Shut up, dog, be silent." Still he goes, "Whoa, whoa, whoa. My God, my peace is destroyed." You kill the dog. That was not a solution. So, one nation creates war with another nation. One is creating war with the neighbors. One is creating war with the family. Sometimes, my God, the husband and wife, you know, they tell me sometimes how they are fighting. The husband throws something, and she throws the pillow. He throws the blanket, and she throws the chair. He throws the table, you know, and she tries to beat him. He is beating the glass door and then calls the ambulance, "Please, you know, injured," and carrying hand here, you know. How many days did you carry your hand like this near your heart? That was your mistake. Where is the peace? Contentment. So, inner peace alone can help you to create peace in the family. And as long as you are not able to create peace in your family, how can you create peace in the world? Neighbors will see you as an example, and you will radiate energy to the neighbors, and they will also relax and have peace. Through that, we will create peace in the society and in the world. To get peace, we have to renounce our greediness, our greed, our anger, and our desires. Come to know the limitation, what I need. So it is said, we are not living for eating, we are eating for living. What percentage of humans in this world are only eating to live? And how many people in the world, like we all, are living just for good eating? When we take an aeroplane for two or three hours and you don’t get anything, you are angry. My God, they don’t give anything. Be happy. It’s good for your health if you don’t eat for a while. No, psychologically, we are angry. Now it shows how much we depend on our desires. So, peace is there where you excuse or you give rights to others. No challenge and no competition. Just leave and let it leave. Peace is within thyself. Bring your consciousness, bring your attention towards your heart, and think of five points. First, I am human. It means not the discrimination towards other creatures only; I am human. And you know, when we become aware that we are human, we can avoid many, many unpleasant things. Because we will not do the things which are unacceptable for humans. Awakening consciousness that I am a human, what should I do or not do? Like you are a director or owner of a company, and you have employees. So, you know what it means to be an owner of the company, to take the decisions. I am a human. And second, what does it mean for me to be a human? How many good opportunities we have that God has given to humans? Humans are created as protectors, not as distractors. Third, what makes me human? Two legs and two hands, two eyes, a long or short nose, and one mouth. No, other creatures also have. What makes me human? These are the divine qualities. Forgiveness, love, understanding, harmony, peace, kindness; anger, hate, jealousy, greed, pride, ego. This is not a human quality that will make a human blind, and a human will do things which will give many, many lives trouble. Which qualities are those that make me human, and how do I develop these good qualities? Go to a good society. If you go to someone who is abusing drugs, sooner or later you will also begin to take drugs. Or you are all the time with someone who is drinking alcohol; sooner or later, you will become an alcoholic too. If you are with a swimmer, sooner or later you will also become a swimmer. If you are cycling with the people, then you will also begin to cycle. And if you will come to me more, I will make you a yogī. If you come to the divine spiritual person, it will make you also divine spiritual. So, society, company, where you are mostly, that’s very important. There we develop those qualities according to the environment and society. How to awaken those qualities, the human qualities? Finally, ask the question to yourself always, mentally. What is the mission of my life? Why am I born as a human? What was the creator or God thinking to give all this life in the human? Our mission is only one: to protect or help all creatures and get God realization, to come out of these waves. That is inner peace, which comes to your ātmā, your consciousness, your mind, to your body, to your families, neighbors, and all. Other thing, okay, we practice yoga, we practice exercises, yes, I want to have a good figure, I want to reduce my belly, I want to reduce my hips, oh, and I want to have a little more muscle here, and I want my chest muscles nice. How long, my dear? How long? Two years? Twenty years? Forty years? Fifty years? One hundred years? What will happen to your body under the earth? I want to eat well. I want to have a good figure and a good body and enjoy. How long will you eat? How many tons of food does a human consume in a lifetime? Five tons. After consuming five tons, we finish the yoga. So, for what you are looking to your body, to have this and that, which is only given to you temporarily—after you adopt another body, an astral body—the aim of human life is to get liberation or God-realization, and that comes when you have the inner peace, contentment, no desires, no longing, no longing to become billionaires, no. Who is rich? One who does not desire anything. And who is poor? One who wants to have more and more and more. Who is happy? Those who have nothing. And who is unhappy? Those who have many things. Then we need an alarm. Then we need a dog and a ride. Be careful. The dog is on guard. Then you have the weapons, guns, licenses. Many, many things we have because we are afraid. We are not happy. Those who have nothing can sleep anywhere, go anywhere, and be happy. So, as a human, there are four things to realize. It’s called dharma, artha, kāma, or mokṣa. So, artha means material means in life. Yes, we are human, we are civilized, and we should be able to give the guest a glass of water. If it’s cold, we should be able to give one blanket. If one is hungry, we should be able to give one bread, and therefore we should work not only for us, but to give to everyone, to share with everyone. Like the last dinner, Jesus distributed the bread among all the disciples and himself. Give, for that is human. So, in this way, inner peace leads to world peace. What is inner peace? That is your divine self. So, awaken your divine self. You are listening. God bless you, and may you have that divine peace in your heart and that liberation. Om Śānti, Śānti, Śānti. It’s very hot here. The air conditioner doesn’t function. I would have spoken longer, you know. Now, leave the window closed.
