A Welcome and Guidance at the Kumbha Melā

Observing the flow of guidance and circumstance at the Kumbha Melā.

The gathering is immense and the schedule is full. Many move between camps for satsaṅg, with teachers giving brief talks before moving on. Authorities gave clear warnings not to camp on certain land near the river, but many did not listen. The water level rose as predicted, and the river itself removed the tents. This illustrates a common pattern: instructions are given for safety and benefit, yet they are often ignored until the consequence arrives. With such large crowds, it is easy to become lost. Announcements constantly seek missing persons. Theft is also prevalent. Therefore, heed the specific guidance provided for conduct and safety. This is a special time to be present. Let go of rigid schedules and personal comforts. Move with the flow of the event as one moves with the river. Engage in sādhanā, satsaṅg, and silence.

"All those people were saying, 'This is the best place to camp.' There was no sign at that time that the Gaṅgā would get higher."

"Leave all of your troubles from home there with them, and they’ll take care of them... Here you can spend your time with yourself, and with your sādhanā."

Oṁ Bholē Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān Kī Jai. Śrī Śrī Dev Puruṣa Mahādeva Kī Jai. Dharma Samrāṭ Paramahaṁsa Śrī Svāmī Madhavānanda Purī Mahārāja Kī Jai. Viśvaguru Mahāmaṇḍaleśvara Paramahaṁsa Śrī Svāmī Maheśvarānanda Purī Jī, Satguru Deva Kī Jai. Hari Oṁ. To those who came today, welcome. Welcome to the Kumbha Melā. Many of you this morning were at the peace tree planting. After that, Swāmījī went to another program. We were in one of the big halls here, where they had quite a huge satsaṅg going on. Swāmījī was still there when I left; his turn to speak was still to come. After that, he went to another program, and then at 8 o’clock we again have a bandārā at the Akhāṛā, so he will be back quite late today. It’s been so busy these last two days. People are just going everywhere. Yesterday, many started their satsaṅg programs in many of the camps and the big halls. So now everybody is going to those camps for satsaṅg and then coming here. The good speakers, like Swāmījī, are moving around everywhere, staying about 20 minutes somewhere, talking for that time, and then going to the next one, and the next one. That will go on until the 10th; this is somehow the peak period. So I hope we see Swāmījī here sometimes, but who knows when. For those who have come recently, I’m sure you’ll be told by the office about the rules here—what to do, when to go places, and where not to go. Please take care of them; they’re here for a very good reason. The last two days, I watched one situation unfold, and I think it’s quite a good example. Before the first bath, a lot of sādhus and quite a few people saw that there was some beautiful, flat land near the river and decided to make their camps there, although the authorities told them, "Don’t make your camp there; it’s not a place for tents." Mahāprabhujī Karatā, Mahāprabhujī Karatā. The level of the water in the Gaṅgā got very much higher. They let a lot of water out, probably to clean the river. Obviously, the authorities knew that 20 days in advance because the water comes from the dam near Badrināth. There is the Tehri Dam, which is the main dam, and it takes 20 days for that water to travel here. So they know what is coming and why they’ve let it come at this time. But as much as they tried to explain to those people, they just wouldn’t listen. Of course, the last two days, their tents were removed not by the police but by the Gaṅgā itself, as it came up and reached a level about this high where their tents were, and they had to move. I think it’s a great example. How many times is Swāmījī telling us, "Don’t do this or do that," and you think, "Oh, come on, it’s okay, it won’t be like that"? All those people were saying, "This is the best place to camp. It was such a good area. It’s right in the center, just near the Gaṅgā." There was no sign at that time that the Gaṅgā would get higher. Oh, look, it’s there, it’s so far away. The Gaṅgā actually moved about 50 meters. But it’s not so easy for us to listen, even though he knows what is coming, just like the authorities knew that water was coming. So, these instructions which Swāmījī is giving for the Kumbh—there is now a huge crowd here. In the last days, noticeably, every day it gets much, much more crowded. Today in the afternoon, it is so much more crowded than it was this morning. You see cars everywhere, full of luggage with people coming, full of people. Everywhere, people are streaming into the Kumbh since yesterday. It’s a really big crowd. It’s really easy to get lost. People spend all day wandering around, trying to find their place again. The loudspeakers are just full of announcements about people who are lost, asking if someone can please come and find them at the police station. So please take care, and take care of those things which Swāmījī says to do and not to do. I will not say them because I know I’ll say them wrong. But you’ll surely have your meeting, and the things will be told—the way to behave in the camp and outside. Please listen carefully. It’s for our safety, for your safety, and for the safety of all of us together. There’s a lot of theft going on at the Kumbh. At one stage, they said a lot of people came from outside of Allahabad; they were like some organized group. So be very careful of what you take with you if you go out, and be very careful of it while you’re out. They’ve got some good tricks, so be aware at every moment. Now, I just want to speak a few minutes in Hindi because if we leave it till later, they all leave. He is planting a lot of trees, and Gurujī has planted the main tree with his own hands because of his Śrī Svāmī Madhavānanda Peace Council. Rāmdev Jī was also there, Ācārya Mahāmaṇḍaleśvara Jī, Swāmī Aśwadeśwarānand Jī was also there, and Śaṅkarācārya Jī was also there, and there were a lot of saints. After that program, Gurujī went to a very big camp which was dedicated to Guru Śaraṇ Ānand. And from that camp, he is sending all the speeches daily. Today, Rāmdev Jī was also sitting there. One or two saints and Gurujī were there, and they were giving all the speeches. And after that, there is a Bandārā in our Akhāṛā at 8 o’clock. After going to the Bandārā, Bābājī will come here. So, it’s a little late. His darśan will be at 9 or 10 o’clock. Today, he was planting a tree. There is a story about this tree, which is local. I have to tell you, it has a very beautiful view. Gurujī goes to Australia. There he has a special servant—a chief minister of one state of Australia, South Australia. This happened about twelve years ago. There, Swāmījī was planting a tree, a Śānti tree, with him. He had made a vine there, in the capital of Adelaide. Its name is Swami Maheshwarananda Shanti Vine. And when Gurujī was planting this tree there, he said to Mukhī Mantrajī, "This is a tree, but you should plant ten lakh trees in South Australia, in this Śānti practice." Mokhiyā Mantra Jī, thora, jo Bābājī kehte haiṁ, vo baut mānte haiṁ, to usko lekar ke, hone ne ek program banāyā, ek yojanā banāyā, vo ye vṛkṣa lagā diyā. Cha saal baad mein, wo aaye the, apni Jadan Ashram mein. Us samai Gurujī nahī̃ the, Gurujī Europe mein the. Ho, hum ne program lagāyā, apni school mein. This program was going on, and I called Bābājī to talk to him. And he told me on the phone, "Bābājī, where do you want to plant ten lakh trees?" So we have planted 30 lakh. Now, all of you who have just come from Rajasthan and Mumbai, you are all Bābājī’s devotees. You know, when you talk to Bābājī with a little pride, then you get a beating in the back. So when he said that he wants to plant thirty lakh trees, one second later, I saw that all the blood ran out of his face. I said, "What is the matter?" The conversation was going on. Later, he turned off the phone. I said, "What happened? You said about the thirty lakh trees. What happened that you were so sad?" I said, Bābājī said that 30 lakhs is nothing. If you want to invest, you should invest at least one crore. Purījī, Purījī... Rajasthan, U.P., Europe, Scotland, America, California, etc. They have a main mantra as their main mantra. And sometimes they meet, they all meet together and make some goals and plans. This became his profession. So he said, he was sitting in a meeting, everyone was sitting, and he was thinking about Gurujī. And this tree was planted a crore ago. He said, "I don’t know what has entered my mind. Without thinking, without thinking too much, it came out of my mouth: ’There is no pomegranate, there is another one, no problem, its seeds are very big.’" So this girl ate it, and then she said to her father, "Father, keep these seeds. When we come home, Gurujī will come, and he will listen to his preaching." Gurujī has the answer for this. This is Guru Bhakti. This is Yog Sādhanā. This is satsaṅg. This is mantra. This is japa. This is bhajan. But if we think that on his first day, if he said to Bābājī, "Bābājī, who will give you 10 lakhs?" It is just a matter of money. When Gurujī says that you can take the blessings that he has, he is not joking. It is possible. But if we think, how will we plant so many trees? How will it happen? If we don’t start, when will it happen? It is in our hands. That is why today we have planted a tree here in Allahabad. It is said that the feeling of this tree is that we have to plant a tree for peace, then we have to water it. That whoever is there will plant a tree in their ashram or in their home. Mahāprabhujī kī Karatā Mahāprabhujī kī Karatā... This year we will plant 11 trees for each person. And now we are doing it. In some cities, they have taken a place from the government, and there they are making a forest. Gurujī has a bucket of lakhs of trees. So if we plant one lakh of these trees, we will have 11 lakh trees. Here or there, in this country or in that country, still, for the world and the earth, something or the other has been served. It seems that if all eleven-eleven rākṣasas are given, this year Gurujī will say next year what should be done. What is the meaning of eleven? Today, in the satsaṅg that was going on there in Guru Śraddhānanda’s Pandal, he was giving satsaṅg about various saṃskāras. If we call upon our own saṁskāras, or those which are described in the scriptures and our own traditions, such as what kind of life it is, if we become aware of them, our entire life becomes ruined, and every single thing takes on a small form. Agar hum karte haiṁ, to wo śuddh ho jāte haiṁ. Baad meṅ ye chal rahā hai ki mukhya ye hai ki saṁskāra milne haiṅ mātājī aur pitājī se. The responsibility of parents is to give their children such an example, such an instruction that their children will see how to live with their own lives. There is a lot of responsibility in this. It is not easy to follow it, but every second, every minute, every hour that we are living, when the children are small, they are seeing how to live. He Kevalam He Kevalam... Koi āpki sumashrī ko chorī ne kareṅgī, isle vahā chodo. Yahā āśram meṁ śānti se rahene hain. Yahā saraḷ jīvan hain, snān ke liye jānā hain, bhojan karne hain, jap karne hain, satsaṅg karne hain. Bākī to sab āpki intizā kareṅgī, Mumbaī meṁ, Pālī meṁ, jahāṁ bhī hogā. Jo Ilāhābād Se Āte Hain, Āpko Bhī Jab Āp Āte Hain, Śyām Ko Naito agar vṛkṣ gaya hai, vaha hum Gaṅgā jī meṁ ḍāleṅge, vaha āke jāyeṅge. Yahā śānti ke liye hai, yahā āpke adhyakṣa ke uttān ke liye hai. Yahā jab āp āratī hai, vaha satsaṅg meṁ baiṭhe hai, vaha Bābājī ke carṇoṁ meṁ baiṭhe hai. You all work so hard, traveling far and wide for business and such, but now for some time, for a few days, such an opportunity has come. So, you have to try. Your wealth is here, your body is here, but your mind, all your thoughts, all your thoughts should be here. If this can happen, then your Kumbh will be successful. Amāvasyā is coming, Maunī Amāvasyā. Maunī Amāvasyā is for silence. Anta ke maun kī āp kī sabbī vṛttiyoṁ vāsanāṁ to śānt hone cāhī, usī din āp kī ātmā kī sāth rahane hai. Amṛta to vahī hai, amṛta to vahī hai. Uskī sāth saṅga karanā hai usī din, Gurujī kī sāth jānā hai snāna ke lie. Yahī amṛta andara se pānā hai. Yah hai Kumbha Melā kā amṛta, āp ke andara hī hai. Already Kumbha Phūl Hai, Baha Kī Kachṛā Ye Kumbha Mein Nahīṁ Ḍālnā Hai, Amṛta Hī Dekhnā Hai, Amṛta Pī Pīnā Hai. Jab Āp Yahāṁ Kumbha Mein Hai, Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa, Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa,... Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavad Gītā, can you sing one bhajana? For those who came now, it’s of course now the fastest time of the Kumbha, the most busy, the most loud, perhaps also the most interesting. But as I was telling them just now, while you’re here, if you can try and take advantage of our security at the gate—we have a lot of security guards there—so leave all of your troubles from home there with them, and they’ll take care of them and won’t let anybody steal them. Here you can spend your time with yourself, with Swāmījī, and with your sādhanā here in this event, in this festival, in this special time. From my experience, of course, things will not always be as you want them at this time. You may not get to eat regularly. It may be that you end up in some program, and you can’t manage to come to lunch, or you have to miss something, or you don’t get enough sleep. It will happen. It’s just like that. That is part of the Kumbha. Just try to go with the flow, as the river is flowing here. Let go of all of the concepts of what you need to do and when you need to do it. And just try to be here. Because it’s not our home. It’s not the place where we have all of those comforts that we normally do. But it is a very, very special time to sit with yourself and to do some mālā. Mahāprabhudīp Karatā, Mahāprabhudīp Karatā, He Kevalam. That’s Kumbh. That’s it. Everyone is so excited to share. Last night we went driving to one Bandārā, and on the way we passed so many places where they were giving away free food. And everywhere they’re just trying to kidnap the cars and kidnap the people and drag them in so they can have the chance to feed them. It is one of the other most important parts of this Mornī Om Vaśya Snān. They say one is to try and keep money, and another one is to give, to give to people. Dhan. So you’ll see as the day comes that more and more places will open up where they’re giving away free food, or blankets, or chai, or sweets. And for those who’ve been here in the past on the big bathing days, you may remember, 12 years ago, that I remember coming back from the bath to our small camp in the Akhāṛā site, and to try and walk down the small street where our camp was was quite a challenge because there was one group giving away jalebīs: "Mahāprabhujī kī karatā, Mahāprabhujī kī karatā, Mahāprabhujī kī karatā." People can try and go for eating before it starts. It would be a little bit easier for the kitchen, I think, because there are now really a lot of people. And enjoy your time, and let’s hope that Swāmījī is here very soon. Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān Kī Jai. Śrī Śrī Devpurījī Mahādeva Kī Jai. Dharma Samrāṭ Paramahaṁsa, Śrī Svāmī Madhavānanda Purī Jī Mahārāj Kī Jai. Viśvaguru Mahāmaṇḍaleśvara Paramahaṁsa, Śrī Svāmī Maheśvarānanda Purī Jī, Satguru Deva Kī Jai. Śrī Mahāmaṇḍaleśvar Jasrāj Purījī Mahārāj, Kī Jai.
