Gurudev Sarana Tumhari

A spiritual discourse on divine love, devotion, and the necessity of a Guru, incorporating a parable and contemporary commentary.

"Where there is bhāva, it resides in the feeling, not in the object. Similarly, a devotee’s bhāva is directed solely towards Bhagavān."

"The path of love is the true path... When love is gone, everything is gone."

The speaker delivers an extended teaching on the essence of devotional feeling (bhāva), stressing that Bhagavān is attained only through love, not mere effort. He narrates the parable of the devotee Bhilnī (also called Bilnī) and her ultimate union with Bhagavān Rāma and her Guru, illustrating the power of surrender. The discourse expands to emphasize the critical role of a true Guru and saṃskāras (cultural impressions), then shifts to a critique of modern cultural erosion and government policy before concluding with prayers and travel plans.

Where there is bhāva, it resides in the feeling, not in the object. Similarly, a devotee’s bhāva is directed solely towards Bhagavān. Bhagavān declares that He is the very origin of the devotee. When one becomes a true devotee, Bhagavān sees no distinction or difference within them. Therefore, no matter how much effort you exert, even a thousand times, it will not come to fruition. There is no Lord without love. If love is absent, regardless of your striving, Bhagavān will never come. Bhagavān is hungry for love. When there was love, did you not eat the gathered berries of Bhilnī? The story of Bhilnī is very profound. What can be said is that as the drasṭī (vision), so is the sṛṣṭi (creation). Some possess a pure drasṭī, while others have a dark one. That poor Bhilnī, a simple soul, suddenly had her royal eyes opened, realizing that now someone... Within ego, there exists this other society; we will not keep them. This is that which comes from tradition. What is a human? Due to a lack of knowledge, no matter how much one practices, no matter how much sādhana one performs day and night—as the ṛṣis did—until that true education is received... True education is attained by becoming a śiṣya. A śiṣya is one who has given themselves completely as a disciple. The śikṣā (instruction) that is called śikṣā belongs to the śiṣya. A śiṣya is one who does not let the house of love remain a mere fantasy, who humbles their head and places it at the feet, reaching the home of the mother. The cowardly mind refuses; the mind of Śaṅkara resists. But the path of love is the true path. The brave offer their heads to the gods; what can a coward do? The hero is courageous and does not hesitate to offer their head. Our dharma is... Wearing yellow garments and saffron robes, they went to the battlefield. The Padmanīs set themselves on fire and jumped into the flames to save their honor, refusing to fall into the hands of wicked people. The tricolor flag of our India has saffron at the top because it represents sacrifice—those who have given their lives for Hindustan—and it is the color of Bhagavān Śiva. Har Har Mahādeva! What did you say? Har Har Mahādeva! That is why the saffron flag is the revered symbol of the Hindu nation, the eternal seat of Āśivaśaṅkara. The saffron flag is the revered symbol of the Hindu nation, the eternal seat. Then she realized and went to a saint with equal vision, the daughter of Bala. Whatever it is, perform the twelve rituals in the āśrama and water... Drink water, eat bread; the āśrama is yours, daughter, stay here. All her relatives rejected her. The Gurujī of Bhīlnī and the community all said, "She is spoiled, she is like this," and they confined Bhīlnī inside. Everyone began to cast blame on her, but Gurujī said, "Daughter, do not worry. You have taken refuge, Gurudev. I have taken refuge; erase my worries, Gurudev, erase my worries. With compassion, take me across the ocean." They live with the buffalo; they also graze the cows and do work. But what ignorance they had, that sage... One day, the ṛṣi rejected him; Bhilrī’s Gurujī departed and became bramalin. Now the hut was left desolate, but Bhilnī remained inside. Gurujī said, “Daughter, one day you will meet Bhagavān Rāma.” And Bhilnī—she simply met Bhagavān, met Rāma... Bab Jī said, "Do this: wash your feet." Bhagavān Rāma washed His feet, yet the dirt was not completely removed. Then the Lord took a dip. For the devotees, Bhagavān is ready to do everything. He took the dip. Even if there is moss, it doesn’t matter. Oh, Rāma Rāma... As soon as they heard the name of Bhagavān Rāma, Bhīlanī, both Bhīlanī and Rāma’s footprints seemed to vanish. The anger dissolved, and the lake became completely pure. Everyone watching said, "Sat Gurudev!" Bhagavān Rāma said that at Bhīlanī’s feet... It is possible; a wayward devotee of Bhagavān can be reformed. Therefore, the instruction of the heart is jñāna. Then the Bīlnī says, "Lord, now you must come to my hut; I also scatter flowers every day." And that Bīlnī brings a bōru, saying, "Bhagavān has come." Keep coming in service, and filling those words, I have come to say that there is no one else but the Lord for me. The forest is not a fruit; you have brought sweetness in your health. You have eaten those words of Bhagavān Rāma, so Lakṣmaṇa says, "What is lost, touch it..." Brother, the bilvī (bael fruit) tastes sweet, and the sugarcane is sweet too. They say the bilvī is sweet, Lakṣmaṇ brother, the bilvī’s fruit is sweet. In the end, Bhagavān says to the Bilvī, "Daughter, now I am going. What is your desire? Whatever desire you have, I will fulfill it in one word." So Bilnī says that this is the dhunī of my Gurujī, and Gurujī was always straightforward. Now, the light of my life merged with the light of Gurujī. Bhagavān Rām departed, Bilnī departed, and the body of Bilnī became invisible. Light merged with light. The soul's light of Bilnī and the light of her Gurudev merged into a single flame on the same hearth. How does it receive instruction? That is called jñāna; that is called prema. Today, in this world, there is a lack of that instruction; that instruction no longer exists. That is why, in our country today, what is happening is because there are no saṃskāras. It is through saṃskāras that one becomes a saṃskṛti (cultured). And... What kind of protection does India receive from the agitators? What is our government doing today? It is erasing our culture. If one marries into another community, they give five lakh rupees. By giving rupees, you are spoiling our culture. If we both have made you a minister, then culture and... Is it not possible to arrange for Muslims to perform namāz? Arrange for Christians to read the Bible. Why do you prevent our people from praying? There has been a lack of spiritual and ethical education for the English, and therefore the intellect of all people has become corrupted and their vision has become distorted. So, the vision is such, the creation is such, the feelings are such. Otherwise, it is said: Nirmal jānkā nēn hai jī, bāvan candan sarī jīvāṁ tāran kāraṇē, guru jīvāṁ tāran kāraṇē jī. With true association, O Param Guru Svāmījī, my birth has been transformed today. In this sinking world, my Hari Guru has protected me. The eyes of the pure Jñāna are like 52 sandalwood bodies; from their body emanates light and fragrance, like sandalwood incense. Within the eyes is purity. When one meets the Guru, there is immense benefit. Without Gurudev, life suffers a great loss. Indeed, life is full of losses and tragedies. But the most terrible tragedy, the greatest loss, is that without attaining ātma jñāna, a person will leave the body and have to go to the eighty-four (lakh yonis). If one met the Guru, then indeed, yes, one would not have to go to the eighty-four. Going to the eighty-four births again and again—O supreme Gurudev Svāmījī. My birth has been purified today; in this sinking world, my Hari Guru has carried me across. The supreme Guru, the teacher, is like a golden metal; like a swan, he discerns the essence. The voice of the supreme Guru Swāmījī resonates: my birth has been purified today in our ancient world. When a human being receives a human body, it is a matter of great fortune. Everyone searches for where they can find satsaṅg, where they can have the darśana of saints. Nowadays, people ask where they can get a contract for local and foreign things, and even for cold beer and all sorts of other things. They keep searching and subscribing... Subscribe, subscribe. When knowledge, when education, when the light of knowledge awakens within the heart, then what flows is nothing but pure love. So, the film Bhārat Mātā, which was made many years ago—I saw it back in ’67 at the Gujarat Sabarmati Āśrama when I went there—then what did it say? Keep flowing the river of prema; embrace everyone who comes along, especially those who are sorrowful. When you keep flowing the river of prema, it becomes the river of prema that imparts jñāna and śikṣā. Otherwise, it is said that in this world there are many with minds, but not many with true understanding. The mind is lacking, but those whose minds possess true understanding are rare. If you want a true merchant, it is not the trader you need but the virtuous one. A merchant is said to be one who has education learned in colleges and schools, but the virtuous one is he who possesses qualities within. Dear ones, this association is to cross the ocean of existence, and human life is very difficult to obtain. Therefore, one should make this life successful through devotion to Bhagavān. I pause at each and every word. So, if Jasarājī, if, if... Two years is very good, but if you do not dive deep and color your intellect with the hue of your heart, then it is like a dry plastic apple. You see, intellect and emotion—emotion here does not mean just any emotion; emotion means that love. So, love... and intellect should work together; then you can help all. When love is gone, everything is gone. Then your intellect turns towards negative things. So, there were many stories within stories, because nowadays it is called the multi-stories. The sky was like a story upon stories. So today, many stories unfolded. I wish you all a very good evening. The next webcasting will be in a few days. Tomorrow, I am going to Nepal, where I will stay for a few days, and then I will come to Jadon for one day, and maybe I will come the day after tomorrow, you never know. I am no longer in bandages; I am free. So, I might fly from there to Udaipur, and from Udaipur to Delhi—that is also possible. Śrīman Nārāyaṇa Nārāyaṇa... Chant Śrīman Nasrīman Nārāyaṇ Nārāyaṇ...
