Learning Has No End

A spiritual discourse on the preparation for life and the pursuit of ultimate knowledge.

"Always, you will find something new to learn. This life is a school. It is a lifelong practice." "When this Jīvātmā, this soul, descends from the space... who knows after how many births we were given this human body?"

Swami Maheshwarananda welcomes attendees and online viewers to the ashram during the Guru Pūrṇimā Pūrva period. He describes life as a school of two types of knowledge: intellectual and goal-oriented. He narrates the soul's eager descent into a meticulously prepared human body, followed by the shock of birth, and introduces the week's focus on Brahmavidyā, the knowledge of Brahman. He outlines program options, humorously laments disciples' lack of discipline over 42 years, and emphasizes the importance of prāṇa.

Good evening to all, and welcome. I am happy to see you, and many blessings to our brothers and sisters watching through the webcast. We are coming; it will be very soon. This time is called Guru Pūrṇimā Pūrva, the period leading to Guru Pūrṇimā, one of the most ancient festivals, about which we will speak during our week together. I am happy you have come, and I believe you had a good journey to our āśram, our beautiful home. We have come here to learn something more. Knowledge has no end. The learning process, vidyā-dhyāna, is a practice. Vidyā—as long as we are learning, we are learning that vidyā. The Lord of vidyā, of knowledge, is the Divine Mother Sarasvatī. She is the lord of wisdom, the lord of vidyā, yet even she always holds a book in her hand. This means there is no empty space where you cannot learn something. Always, you will find something new to learn. This life is a school. It is a lifelong practice. Vidyā is of two kinds. One is called intellectual, vācārthī. Vācārthī vidyā means knowledge about this material world, as well as some theoretical information about spirituality. The second is called lakṣārthī, where one makes an aim or goal and then practices towards it. Every entity, every being, has two desires. The first is sukha kī prāpti or duḥkha kī nivṛtti: to realize and actualize happiness, and to be free from unhappiness. From the smallest creatures to humans and elephants, all strive for happiness. Sukha kī prāpti, duḥkha kī nivṛtti. This is in Hindi. When this soul comes into a human body, there is much preparation for it. It is not easy; there is much preparation, and you must wait. This year, last year, I was observing a little bit in the Vatican the declaration of the Pope, the German Pope. He said he wanted to have rest. That's nice of him. In the entire history of the popes, he is the first pope to retire. It does not mean he lacks spiritual energy or spiritual position. People were waiting, thousands of people in the Vatican at what you call St. Peter's Square, gazing at the chimney, waiting for the white smoke. I don't know how they make white smoke, but chemically, I think it's done. So when we make our sannyāsīs, we are waiting for orange smoke. I was curious whether orange smoke or white smoke would come. It was very interesting, a long, long time. The single chimney was sitting there, a single picture broadcast around the whole world. There was a lot of preparation. Until the last minute, something could change. Okay, the subject is closed. So when this Jīvātmā, this soul, descends from the space, Antarīkṣa, the subtle world, to this planet or this earth—this is called Mṛtiloka—who knows after how many births we were given this human body? Automatically, by Mother Nature, the Cosmic Engineer, whatever you call God or anyone, how many were involved in this work? Like an electric wire, all the 72,000 nāḍīs; every nāḍī is connected to some function. Nothing is useless. Which nāḍī has which responsibility? The muscles, tissues, etc. So the Vidhātā, the mother of destiny, and nature prepared everything for us. And they checked again. It took nine months. And you say, "Well, the doctor has given us a date like this and like that." If a child is five days early or ten days late, they are nervous. This is all happening now. When you all were born—who is here sitting like me, 80, 90 years old? 50-year-old people here need a stick to walk—at that time, there was no doctor telling that it would be born on that date. It was by nature. When it will come, it will come. And no one had a right to know the gender. It was happiness and surprise that you got a daughter or you got a son. And now you know beforehand; they already say it is a girl or a boy. That is also against nature. Unfortunately, in many countries, they are performing abortions when they think it is a girl. So, in many countries, including India, it is strictly prohibited to have a sonography to know the gender. Now, you may have a sonography instrument, but you can't do it. You can't use it; only a particular doctor must do it, and that doctor must be trained. Otherwise, the doctor will lose their license and go to prison. So it's a very strict rule. Now there are too many girls and too few boys. How nice. The world is full of women. Oh my God, Kali Yuga is a woman's Yuga. You know, once there was a function in your country. What they call when all people get together, what was it? In the national festivals in the football stadium in Prague, I was there. Spartakiada, and they invited me also. I was there, and they were saying, "Let's see the power of the socialist women." Socialism on the strength of the socialist women. And now the women went to the front. And at that time it was called the Soviet Union, women of the Soviet Union. Very good, I mean, in a positive way. But now, in this democracy, women don't have that strength. Okay, we are talking about tolerance, but in many countries they get a signature. Before getting work permission, you are not allowed to get pregnant. And when they come to know that this person is pregnant, they may quit their job. So there is discrimination. There is a difference. But can you imagine this world without women? Can you see one kitchen where there is no woman, only men are there? Can you see the condition of the toilet and bathroom where only men are living? Do you know the house where there are only men living inside? Bedroom and so on, so both hands clean together. And God made both hands' fingers equally long. Yes, really. So where is the problem? It is in the mind. So, anyhow, nine months takes time to prepare this human body. Also, it takes nine months to prepare the baby calf of the cow. And other creatures, ten months, one year. When you are completely finished, then there is a rehearsal. They are checking everything is functioning, everything, from the little small toes, nails, till the hair here. Many, many faculties engage in that. There's a cosmetic one sitting. Nice eyebrows, eyelids, eyes. Moustache, hair, everything. Can you imagine that in Harihari one eye is here and the second is here? Then you have to see always like this. After that, our destiny tells us, or those who are preparing us to come here, they say, "No, Jīvātmā, now jump out on this stage of the mortal world. We believe, we hope that you will play a perfect game. You will make the humans happy. You will create love in them, and protection for the animals and everything. So, you are perfect. Now you jump, and you are born." You are happy, saying, "Yes, please, I'm ready. Send me, send me. I can't inhale anymore. No, it's peace in the mother's body." So they said, "Here you are." Open a little eye and begin to cry. "Oh God! Moj Bože, Bože,... Moj Bože. Takhle jsem si to nemyslel." (My God, God... My God. I didn't think it would be like this.) So, my dear, the miracles and happiness of God are in many ways. Zázraky, štěstí Božího zázraku se stane mnoha způsoby. (Miracles, the happiness of God's miracle happens in many ways.) In all this, there are different principles, different elements occupying. And this summer, our programs have taken over a subject called Brahmavidyā. Brahmavidyā, knowledge of the Brahman. Where there is a Kriyā, there will also be some Kriyā practices. These Brahmavidyā instructions can continue until twelve years. It's not so quickly, quickly. You see, to construct this physical body takes nine months. So, to go through all the five bodies which we have, the five kośas, we have to come to the Brahman, crossing all the lokas, fourteen lokas and one Brahman: the seven lokas in the lower world and seven lokas above. Within all of this, the most important thing is prāṇa. Did we put on the air conditioner? Can we turn it off? Kesanam sepan. Yes, again my head got cold. So we will have very precise techniques and instructions. This one week, after that again, two weeks will come again. So, tomorrow we will begin to have proper, exactly the instructions. Discipline is required. In VEP, we were one week. Discipline was very poor, so I will not give you anything where you have to follow the discipline. Whether you will be successful or not is your karma. In the last 42 years, I didn't succeed with you. To bring you to keep Mauna. Second, you still don't understand what fasting means. So these very simple two points you were not able to understand in 42 years. Then what do you expect in this one week? Therefore, you try your best, and I will try my best. But we will have nice programs, also for the children we will have nice programs, and also there will be Kṛiyānusthān. Those who will go to Kṛiyānusthān, they will not have time to come to the Brahmavidyā. And both doing together is not good. So you have to choose yourself: if you want to go to the Kriyanostan, which is very, very good, or you want to stay for Brahmavidyā lectures, which is also very, very good. And you can bring with you some things to write, to write the points in Brahmavidyā. And you have everything written in this, your book, Hidden Powers in Humans. We should be punctual there and follow the discipline. So I welcome you all here and bless you in the name of Mahāprabhujī and wish you a very pleasant stay here. Śivadīpna Bhagavān Devīśvara Mahādeva Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandī Bhagavān. How good was that?
