Gurupurnima celebration with Swamiji

A Guru Purnima satsang discourse on the nature of the Guru.

"Lead us from the darkness of ignorance to the light of wisdom—that principle is the Gurudev, not this body of the five elements."

"The Guru is the form of the bliss of Brahma... He is the form of knowledge, not ignorance."

A spiritual teacher delivers a talk for Guru Purnima, explaining the guru as a divine principle of knowledge and light rather than a physical body. He explores Vedic prayers, uses analogies of diamonds and pearls, and discusses the disciple's readiness to receive wisdom. The talk emphasizes the goal of moving from mortality to immortality through this guiding principle.

All my dear ones, devotees, and spiritual seekers—here in this hall and around the world, wherever you are—some of you are having a good morning, some a good evening, and some a good night. Blessings are coming to you from holy Bhārat, the Pobhumi, the land of heroes and saints, Rajasthan, and from the holy abode for spiritual seekers in India: Om Viśvadīp Guru Kul, Swāmī Maheśvarānanda Āśram, as well as Alak Purī. This is the Pitā Paramparā. This is the occasion of the full moon, Guru Pūrṇimā. In the Upaniṣad it is said: "Tamaso mā jyotir gamaya"—lead us from darkness to light. This phrase "tamaso mā jyotir gamaya" means Gurudev. "Go" means darkness, "roo" means light. He who leads us from the darkness of ignorance to the light of wisdom—that principle is the Gurudev, not this body of the five elements. "Pañca tattva kā śarīra hī gurudeva nahīṁ hai," a Mahātmā said. The great saint said: "Sab ghaṭ merā sāyā, koī ghaṭ khālī nāy." In each and every heart, God is dwelling. The light of God is in each and every heart—it doesn’t matter whether human, animal, or any creature. "Sab ghaṭ merā sāyā, koī ghaṭ khālī nāy. Balihārī us ghaṭ kī, pragat bole āy." But my adoration, my salutation, my devotion, my humbleness is to that body in whose heart God Himself is speaking. Mahāprabhujī said in a bhajan: "Aisā merā satguru andar bole"—my Gurudev speaks within me. So it is said: when you buy a box that costs you millions, it is not the box but what is inside. Inside is a diamond, very precious. Uskī kīmat hai. You keep it so carefully not because of the little container, but because of what is inside. Uskī price hai. Similarly, the value is the value of the knowledge, not the body. That knowledge which you have, you should give further. What you have, if you don’t give... you will lose it. Jo jñāna hamāre pās meṁ yā āpke pās meṁ hai—if you do not give that knowledge to anyone, then that knowledge will be lost. You may have a great mantra to remove poison and venom, but if you didn’t tell anyone and you yourself died, those mantras will be lost. Similarly, the Guru Paramparā is like that. The Guru is that one who is transforming that spiritual divine light into the disciples. But a disciple should be śupatra, not kupatra. Up from the top, down from the bottom—Gurū Mahārāj says that is kupatra. Śupatra is that... each word, like a drop. Or in the Svātina Akṣara, that Śakti grabs that other drop and goes to make a pearl in her stomach. So, whatever happens to the disciple... the knowledge of the Guru comes out of him. It is not like that. If you get the spices, you will get the knowledge. So Gurujī said, Gurudev said: half knowledge is more dangerous than no knowledge. Therefore, tamaso mā jyotir gamaya—lead us from the darkness of ignorance to the light of wisdom. "Asato mā sadgamaya"—that is the guru’s principle. Asato mā asat—unreality. Lead us from unreality to reality. Asate kī aur se lījā kar ke hameṁ, sate kī aur lījā, he prabhu, voh guru tattva hotā hai. Or lastly: "Mṛtyor mā amṛtaṁ gamaya." Hey Prabhu, lead us from mortality to immortality. This soul has been suffering for many, many lives. Now, finally, we have met the Gurudev. So what is that Gurudev then? Not a body. Brahmānandam parama sukhadam. The Guru is the form of the bliss of Brahma, not the body. Brahmānandam paramānandam vā paramśuktaik. He is the bliss of Brahmā. Kevalaṁ jñāna-mūrti. He is the form of knowledge, not ignorance. He is knowledge—he is the Guru. He is ignorance—he is not the Guru. Kevalaṁ jñāna-mūrtiṁ dvandvātītaṁ gagana-sadṛśyam. There is no difference between them. They are like the sky. One is like the sky. Śrīdājī Mahārāj says: "Prabhujī, mere auguṇa chitnā dharo, sam-dṛṣṭi hai nāma tyāro, chahe to para karo. Sam-dṛṣṭi ākāśa gagana-sadṛśyam, dvandvātītaṁ gagana-sadṛśyam, tasmād yadi lakṣyam." And all of us have the same goal: that we go to their refuge from which we can enter into His form. Because He is Ekam Nityam Vimalāchalam. He is only one. Eko brahma dvitīyo nāsti. Ekam nityam—He is everlasting. He is eternal. He never gets destroyed. Ekam Nityam Vimalāchalam. There is no discrimination in Him—no discrimination of caste, no discrimination of form. Nor is there any difference in status, nor is there any difference in money. There is only a difference... there is no substance in it. Otherwise, it is said: if one washes his mind for many lifetimes, it will remain the same. People wash their mind for many lifetimes, but there is a stain on it that even if someone rips the clothes off, that stain will not go away. That is why Ācārya Rām Jī Mahārāj said that if the mind is irritated for many births, then it should be like this... and if the mind is irritated for many births, then it should be like this. This is the speech of Ācārya Rām Jī Mahārāj. That knowledge, that Gurudev is nirmala—ekam nityam vimala. There is no mala; mala is not there. Vimala, achalam—He is not moving. This sky is visible... the sky is not visible. Whatever is moving in the sky—sun, moon, stars, all these elements, water, fire—this is moving. The sky is not moving. So the consciousness of Satgurudev, His form is immaculate. He is not immaculate... we want to become His form. Ekam nityam vimalam achalam sarvādi sākṣī bhūtam—and He is the witness of all. Sarvādi sākṣī bhūtam. Even though He is the witness of all, bhāvātītam—He is beyond feeling. There is no discrimination in it. Tri-guṇa rahitam. When He is devoid of the three guṇas, He is called Satguru Dev. Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva. Brahmā is the creator. Viṣṇu is Śiva’s virtue—sattva is His virtue. And Śiva is the virtue of tamo, because He removes the darkness in the tamas. Śiva is the one who does the saṁhāra, and Śiva is the one who runs it. It is said that sṛṣṭi (creation) is the same, and the one who does saṁhāra is also the same. That is why it is said that sṛṣṭi, that creation, within them, within the end, there is a pure awareness: "I am one. I am one. I will become one in many." In which this pureness is born, it is called Hiraṇya Garbha—the golden egg, golden garbha, Hiraṇya Garbha. This consciousness is awakened and created in the body. Our being is born from the same place, and when we return to the same place, we will attain salvation. Similarly, water forms a stream, and the stream forms a stream. From the stream, it forms a river, and from the river, it flows into the ocean. The samudra (ocean) is Satguru Dev. And this satsaṅg that is... it is like a boat sailing in the river in which we all are sitting. Therefore, this is Guru Pūrṇimā. Finally, tamaso mā jyotir gamaya. So that’s what I wanted to tell: what the satsaṅg means and what Guru Pūrṇimā means. Therefore, all my dear brothers and sisters around the world and here, I wish you all the best and the blessings of Satguru Dev, Devpurījī, Alagpurījī, Mahāprabhujī, and Gurujī. And my good wishes for your spiritual development and spiritual path. Now, midnight begins the Guru Pūrṇimā. In some countries, the sun is still shining. Don’t worry, the evening will also come, and there will be evening; you will see the full moon. The rest of the program, according to the new daily time in Indian Bhārat, 9 a.m. morning—will you see that? How this, the Śiva manifest states in the sky, and how it will descend from the sky to this earth, and especially to our home temple, Jyotirliṅga. Dvādaśa jyotirliṅga—twelve jyotirliṅgas at once. You will see different. You will say, "I never saw Śivjī’s face like that." In some phases, Śivjī has a full beard and mustache, and somewhere He is nicely like... "You are cutting every day." Where was this Śivjī? At that time, in the palace, where was the soap and all this? Was it there to apply? Now you too have become the same, and Śivjī was made the same. Earlier, if you were a moustache-dresser, then you kept a moustache. If you were a beard-dresser, then you kept a beard. Now, we make Bhagavān in the form of us. If there were no saints and human beings, if there were no humans, there would be no God. The word, the name "God," humans gave. We introduced who is God, and therefore God should also be thankful to us, isn’t it? God should also be thankful to us. We should be happy that we gave birth to God in the name of God. So it is that saints have introduced what is God. Therefore it is said: the saints are higher than God itself. Therefore, finally, it is said: "Guru Brahmā, Guru Viṣṇu, Guru Devo Maheśvara, Guru Sākṣāt Parabrahma, Tasmai Śrī Gurave Namaḥ." So, that guru-tattva, that guru-principle is within you. Just practice correct and right practice of yoga, sādhanā—that is what we call yoga in daily life, a scientific system—and self-inquiry meditation, and learn the brahma-vidyā. Brahma kriyā se brahma vidyā se hī brahma kā jñāna ho saktā hai. Toh vohī brahman kehlātā hai. Brahma jāneti brāhmaṇa. Jisne brahma ko pehchān liyā, voh brahman hai. Aur jo brahmaniṣ śrotri hotā hai, vohī satguru kehlātā hai. So, listen to the bhajan. I wish you all the best, and good evening. Tomorrow morning, I will be coming to you. There will be sanyāsa dīkṣā; you will see also in live webcast. And then you will see how this huge... is coming, so waiting for you. If there will be no way, casting functioning... we will send you after through. We will record and send you... all the best. Many places deep, not but... Wanna he? They put it some. I’m a... my doctor show. I wanna he, so I didn’t. I eat concert. I’ll get your... Satsaṅg, and this is so cool. He all very good. Only you can be happy is through satsaṅg, and only you can be unhappy through the kusaṅg. Both—utthāna and patana. Utthāna satsaṅg se, or patana kusaṅg se. So, satsaṅg.
