The Soul and Karma

The soul and karma are inseparable. Karma is all action—thinking, speaking, doing. Every cause has an effect, and every action returns to the doer. The entire universe is activity, or Kriyā. The soul, or Jīvātmā, is the individual living force born from divine consciousness. This consciousness, like a still lake, generates the primal sound when stirred. This sound manifests the elements and forms the subtle body. The soul carries its accumulated karma from life to life, seeking new forms based on its actions. Good karma eases liberation; bad karma creates difficulty and pain. Realization of the true Self, Ātman, unties these karmic knots. One must be humble and not claim divine status, for such identification is ignorance. Cultivate positive actions and thoughts, for every step is counted.

"Karma means action, cause, action and effect."

"The body dies, but the soul lives. The soul seeks a new vessel."

Glory to Devīśvara Mahādevakī, to Jaya Mādhava Kṛṣṇabhagavān, to Sanātana Dharma. A beautiful good morning, and these beautiful greetings and blessings come to all of you, dear brothers and sisters in other parts of the world, from Vienna, from Holi Gurujī’s āśrama. The theme of this weekend’s program is the soul and karma. Everyone knows karma. It is a word in the Sanskrit language, but almost everyone knows it. Karma means action, activity. Karma comes from action—doing, feeling, speaking, thinking, eating, drinking, sleeping. Everything that happens through your existence or is seen is karma. Whenever you go somewhere, there is also karma. When you attend Satsaṅg, you accumulate good karma. If you go into bad company, you accumulate bad karma. It is not only that people perform karma, but it is throughout the entire universe. Our Earth also works, our nature also works, all principles and elements also act and work. Space is there, offering an opportunity for everyone to act. This means that throughout the entire universe there is activity, and this activity is called Kriyā. Kriyā comes from doing, so whatever you do is a Kriyā. Normally, in the language of Yoga, the Yoga practitioner understands only two things about Haṭha-Yoga-Kriyā. That means Ṣaṭ-Karma—karma comes again—meaning six techniques. Perhaps someone does not know: yoga is not a physical exercise, it is not a breathing exercise, it is not Haṭha-Yoga. It is a purification technique. These are six Kriyās: four Haṭha-Yoga, Rāja-Yoga Kriyā, Meditation Kriyā, and many others, as we understand. Cooking is also a Kriyā. Eating is a Kriyā. Preparing food is also a Kriyā. Washing is a Kriyā. Sleep is a Kriyā. So everything that moves, everything that functions, is Kriyā. Karma means action, cause, action and effect. Why do you think like that? Why do you do that? Because there is a cause. Why do you eat? Because the cause is that you are hungry. That is why you drink, because you have thirst. And whatever you eat will have an effect, positive or negative. The effect is immediate. And so we cultivate positive thoughts and perform positive actions in this world—towards nature, towards all living beings, towards all people, and also towards our planet. It is calculated for us as karma. Every step is counted. One drop fills the pitcher. And so every thought, every word, every action, every deed, every step is accounted for in two parts: good and bad. That is Karma. Now, the effect, the action, the reaction—and this reaction will be directed back towards the one who performed it. And so, it returns to where it happened or where the message was victorious. Where was the origin? Now we come to the soul. There is a great deal of misunderstanding or a lot of lack of clarity among people regarding the differences between the soul and the breath. For example, we begin here with our mind, with our mind... slowly up, downhill or down the mountain. From the Ākāśa element, Ākāśa Tattva, the empty space. The empty space is a shelter; it holds the cosmic consciousness, which we call God. God without form, omnipresent, ever-present, omnipotent—whatever name one gives—but without shape, Nirguṇa. Nirguṇa God is evenly present throughout the entire universe, permeating all planets, stars, and all objects. So it is no wonder that He is also present in all beings. Also, space also exists in the consciousness—consciousness, Nirguṇa. Then the primal sound is awakening in cosmic consciousness. And this sound is nothing other than what we see here. This is it. Therefore, Nādaṁ Brahma Parabrahma—this sound, the sound is the highest sound of Brahman. Now, how are we to understand that? There is a beautiful lake or pond. It is beautiful water, beautiful. Now, we cast a small stone into the center of the lake. What will happen? The waves, the ripples, quite round, the ripples will be produced. The movement in the sun awakens the sound with personal consciousness. When the sound is awakened, this sound is produced. No water, no wave. And so, no divine consciousness, no sound. And the sound will calm down again after some time. And after a certain time, the sound is felt again. Where? In the souls. But the souls are visible. And so in the sound, we say the Taraṅga. And in the sound, we say the Taraṅga. That means the sound is unified. The sound always flows uniformly in a beautiful, circular form. And when you touch the bell, the resonance from the entire body of the bell and the empty space supports this resonance, this vibration, and sends it out in a harmonious voice. And the vibration is Ātman. The Ātman itself is Brahman, the most sacred atmosphere. And all these breaths and all these beings are the same breaths everywhere. The Divine Consciousness is everywhere. Now, the sound slowly, slowly comes and touches somewhere with other elements. One produces two, the two produce three, the three produce more, and so on—elements: space, fire, air, water, and then matter and the earth. And thus a subtle body will manifest, an individual. And the individual is that which develops its own qualities. And that is called Jīvātmā. Jīva lives, and that means the living force, the energy that has been gathered, begins to act according to the capacity of this self; these actions have an effect. What do we say now, with modern medicine and so on, about this cancer disease? These are the particles. And they are very harmful. They are very harmful to the saint. But they do exist. And so it is not only that you exist as one body and one soul, but they permeate every cell of your body, every blood vessel of your body, which contains countless bacteria and cells. And there is new life in it again. And so, the entire universe is dense, filled with individual qualities. When this sound, developed with certain qualities, is liberated, then the sound returns back to its origin. The sun sets, returns to the sun, and then it is no longer as beautiful as when it comes back. This planet is called Mṛtyuloka. And there is a planet, the Mṛtyuloka, the mortal world, the murderous world. Because here, the cells, the jīvas come and go. They develop more and more strongly, and here the effect of karma is greater. Good karmas will make things much easier for us, leading more towards liberation, while bad karmas will make our existence more difficult, affecting our life on other levels. Jīva means life. Jīva means life, life. The body dies, but the soul lives. The soul seeks a new vessel, a place to enter, a place to dwell. And it is your karma; according to your karmas, it will be captured, and the soul will be guided into another body. That must not happen; it is not certain that a human will be born again as a human. It can be that the soul will journey in another form of existence through karma. And it may be that the soul enters into a cosmic play from another living being, from another living form. This is a play in consciousness. It is a play in awareness. And whoever understands this can liberate. He will liberate himself. As long as individual karma exists, you will live as an individual. That is your identity, that you are a living being, whether human or hare, fish or... Not the body weight, but the Self that lives within you. So we focus on our Self, but we must go through Jīvātmā, and thus, the Vedāntic stages begin, first and foremost, to take on a human form. This is the important thing about being born as a human. It means nothing that a person is cruel to other living beings. If you torment other living beings, then you are next in line; in your next life, you will go there. Even like a wheel, currently in parts of a wheel, at the very top, but it turns there; that will come, the topmost part comes down, and so is the part of the wave. That is called the cycle, the wave. So we proceed, whether you believe it or not. My side goes like this, and from your side it goes differently, okay? But when I show it like this, from my side it is different, okay? I am not showing the dishes from the White, but you must not say it was as she always shows, like that. Originally, always, and even pain, what God has given, is the most beautiful thing God can give. It is in our nature that if God had not created or caused pain, then we would awaken without pain. Attention, conscious, careful, and so on. God has given us only one of the pains through which we have truly grown so much. We have grown so much that we have this medicine, this injection, this pain relief. And there are so many different pains—physical pains, emotional pains, and whatever else. And we try to become good. That is it. So in business life, in negotiations, one asks, where exactly is the pain threshold, please? In business, you ask, where is the pain level, where is the border of the pain, and now in finance we have reached the level of pain. Pain is felt not only in the physical body but also in the astral body. Pain and fear—fear is a manifestation of pain. Fear is a manifestation of pain. And what we have is fear; we need His radiant planes. For example, in the Christian religion, it is said that we celebrate—you have fire, you have hell, and what else, how many are there? Hell, heaven, and so on. Yes, it is not said for the body, but for your mind, for you. And that means, it exists. And the pain, the projection of pain, is fear. And every living being has fear. In fear, every person has fear; more and more fear arises where negative actions are present. But the person, the young one, understands what pain means, and what pain is. Even the animals, who unfortunately are these innocent or helpless beings, cannot express or clearly tell us that they are not the animals. The human understands this. The great person does such a thing because the divine universal modesty is still missing in the heart: forgiveness, mercy, grace. You shall not cause pain. You should neither cause pain nor create pain, okay? You give an injection, and then it is without pain, and then you cut the nose. But you have acted against something that you destroy, and you destroy the saint, for you destroy the creation of the Holy Father, the creation of God. The body. Every living person has a body. But in our body, in our nature, there are such beautiful, wonderful qualities and notes in our head and heart where we can decide whether to do it or not. An animal does it only out of hunger; when it has eaten enough, it relaxes and rests. It does not act out of hunger, but out of greed. And that is heavy karma. Body, mind, consciousness, intellect, viveka, consciousness, jīvātmā, the soul, and ātman. When we realize Ātma-Jñāna, when we attain self-realization, then these knots are untied. These hard stones have melted. The hard nut inside you is a painful nut. And it flows throughout the entire universe, through good kinds, through good karmas, through good actions and karmas, imprinting, meditating, then we will be carried through. So, now, what we think, what we do, what we speak, and what we eat and drink, where we go, where our Karmendriyas focus, what our Jñānendriyas focus on, what they see, what they hear, what we feel on the skin, and so on. All of this is counted as Karmendriyas. It does not mean that it must be bad or necessarily good. The eyes are given to have a darśana. And God has given the ears to hear, to listen to the wisdom and the knowledge. So Mahāprabhujī’s bhajan says, and what a blessing it is that we have the darśana of Gurudev. Our eyes are very, very valuable organs. Only Mother Nature can provide that. Until now, people have not prepared any kind of model. People have not prepared any models and give a few eyes to these models and see everything. God is omnipotent, and human beings are omnipotent. No technology exists so far where someone has made a model or doll in the morning and now it belongs to them, or talks about everything except the film. This is the miracle of God. At least, no matter how high you are. It does not matter how high you are. Some people make great mistakes; many say, "I am an incarnation of Kṛṣṇa." Please, speak, you can speak like that, but you are not that. Or someone says, I am a Śiva incarnation. Śiva has drunk so much poison. And there is a tiny little poison around. But with a small drop of moisture, you fall down and say, now I am dying. That is just how it is. You say, you are Śiva, or other people who say, I am the incarnation of Jesus. Why do you say I am the incarnation of Jesus? Why can’t you say that you are another incarnation of Jesus? So many millions of people believe in Jesus. The people who believe in this person will all be transformed like a person like Jesus. It may be that you possess certain qualities, such as those of the Christians, of Rāma, of Śiva, of Viṣṇu, or whoever else. Not that. At Kumbh Melā, a Swāmī came to me and said he was the incarnation of Kṛṣṇa. And Swāmījī is a friend of Pauli Goji, and I was with him and said, he has seen that he has his drawer, and he says he is Kṛṣṇa. And he said, he is Kṛṣṇa. And the friend says, oh, very good, I am happy that Kṛṣṇa is already here. And now we have a bodybuilder. And then Kṛṣṇa completely destroyed, fought. And Kṛṣṇa was very young, not so strong. He was very small, not so strong. And yet he was a very great man. And Kṛṣṇa fought against our Vasiṣṭha. And we will see how we will become. That is a mistake, that is ignorance, and it means that you are hiding, you are hiding behind someone else, or you are using your gun, or you are using your weapon to shoot someone else. And this is how many people make mistakes. And so many people make the mistake of saying, now I am a Yogi, I don’t need a master, I don’t need a Swāmījī, I don’t need anyone. I can give you mantra and prayer. Yes, you can indeed give. Yes, you can give. But no one can forbid you. But if that were the result, then that is it. It is very important. What Mother Nature or God, the creators, can do, humans cannot do—except for atomic weapons and atomic weapons and... atomic weapons and... atomic weapons. And this signifies the path of realization. The United Nations speak of sustainable development, which only God can accomplish. Until now, human growth has been a process of realization, realization, and realization-development. A beautiful fragrance, our nose says, a rose, it wafts, or when you get on the airplane, or when you get on the airplane, and it becomes delicious, and they eat fish and flour for our vegetarians, and it is terrible when they serve the food. For the vegetarians who can no longer bear this olfactory smell, the scent is more dreadful than smoke on airplanes. I believe everyone should write to the airlines. Everybody should write to the airplane operators, and the health instructors should write: Please, for a few hours as human beings, alcohol and meat should not be served on airplanes. Please, everyone write to the airplane operating offices. And everyone who is listening now, perhaps you also eat meat and fish, and for ten days they die, and it is in the hairstyle, and perhaps you also eat it. You can endure a few hours without eating meat and without alcohol. Many, many unpleasant qualities or events, what happens because of meat and what happens at the airport, what will help from the perspective of safety through food and alcohol, also to stop from the perspective of safety. God, Mother Nature, and the Creator have given a system; until now, no one has created a model for the central body that says, it is a rose. Such a person should never compare themselves to God. Yes, it may be that within you there arise divine, fixed qualities, or those attributes that ordinary people do not possess... A quality that people normally do not have. Yes, that can be. But you must be secretive. Look, Kṛṣṇa was completely devoted to his friends. Completely devoted to his friends and so on. Rāma was completely devoted to his masters and friends, and so on. He said nothing. He said nothing... If you live and want to fit into this world, God will say to you, hey come here, you said you are me. Okay, now we will send you in the form of a camel into the desert, where there is not even water for 24 hours. And three people will ride on your bike and will strike your buttocks. Because a camel has no place to sit. Yes, that is against the cosmic nature. Therefore, be humble, nature says, be humble, give; if you are very rich, then give, like a tree. Look now, at this time of the year, an apple tree, so rich, with such big apples. And what does the apple tree do? It calls itself forward. That everyone can have, please. This is my burden, because there is too much money. Please take it. The world-famous rich man stands on Kärntner Straße and says, I am too rich, please. And he says, I am also rich. He does not need to say, we will not rush. We will be there quickly. And so, the wealth that we have within us is our true wealth. The wealth that is within us is our good Self. Our wealth is our good Self. That means you are accessible, helpful, loving, full of understanding, with feelings and with complete love. Then you are a little bit like God Himself, a little like this Self of God. You have probed his qualities for a while. Why? Because God has given you the ability to progress through your sādhanā. It does not matter how many cities we have... It does not matter how many magical qualities we possess. Do not speak like this: I am Jesus, I am Christ. That would be a mistake. We see so many crosses hanging in the churches. There was, is, and will be only one Jesus. It was and it is and it will be only one Kṛṣṇa, one Rāma, one Mahāprabhujī. That’s it. And one like you are. So you are as you are. As you are, so you are. You are that. So strive in your spiritual progress and level to reach a state where your consciousness is sometimes anchored in the cosmic consciousness. If your soul experiences jealousy, it means your soul is suffering pain; if you are angry, your soul will be tormented. That means your soul is in the fire of hell, and if you are greedy, your soul will be trampled underfoot, and so on. Then there is no freedom, no peace, no liberation of yourself. That means our soul and our karma are intertwined; they have a relationship, and the more karma... The soul becomes stronger, freer, softer, purer, enlightened, and merges into Ātman. That is our goal. So, we will continue this lecture. Now we will take a break for 15 minutes. And we will have a meditation to further understand our soul, our emotions, our heart. Just like yesterday’s meditation, just like yesterday’s meditation, today we will do it a little differently. So I wish you a very beautiful afternoon, and all brothers and sisters in other parts of the world. Maybe it is night, afternoon, or morning where you are. All the best. And we will see each other in six hours. We will continue our lecture. All the best. Until next time. All the best.
