The Influence of Karma and the Soul: Nurturing Life Through Love and Tradition

Our actions shape karma and affect the soul, which is the same in all living beings. We can help souls through love and tradition. A child finds happiness in parental presence, not possessions. Animals respond to gentle care with joy. Betraying trust by harming a being after showing love collapses this bond and creates heavy negative karma. Guiding children with religious rituals on holy festivals builds their hope and connection to the divine. Family unity, with grandparents and relatives gathering, provides the greatest healing for a child's soul. Traditional wedding ceremonies, witnessed by sacred fire, establish lifelong commitments. When a family member dies, prayers and ceremonies like the Pitṛ ritual help liberate their soul. This duty is universal; cultures worldwide honor ancestors, whose blessings return to us. Modern disruption of family and nature through greed creates global suffering. Our answer is spiritual development, vegetarian living, and prayer, which can positively influence other souls.

"Life is life. The soul is the same; yet, it is said the soul is in an animal body, and we humans can help—yes, we can do much."

"If you break your word before the fire, the fire will burn you, it will punish you. A human word is significant."

Filming location: Vienna, Austria

A beautiful greeting to all of you connected through the webcast, to all brothers and sisters from different parts of the world, from Gurudev’s Ashram in Vienna. I am happy to be with you. Every day, we receive feedback that more and more countries are able to connect, and I am as glad as you are that through my little knowledge, I can offer you something. Our topic is karma and the soul, the effect of karma on the soul. As we discussed, whatever we do affects our karma and our soul. Today, we go further to see if we can help other souls, whether human or non-human. In reality, there is no "human soul" or "animal soul"; the differences exist only in the body. The soul is the same; life is life. Yet, it is said the soul is in an animal body, and we humans can help—yes, we can do much. The first example is when a child is born. We all rejoice, offer congratulations to the parents, and send blessings to the baby. Secondly, all parents try to provide guidance through good example, without violence. Parents should be an example for their children and be present for them. A small child has no idea about money or whether you have a beautiful villa. A child is happy with just a little balloon but even happier when the father and mother are present. It is especially joyful when grandparents come, and much happier when parents and neighbors play together in the garden. This is happiness. This is how we help a soul to be happy. Not only humans, but also animals. Little birds, if you gently stroke them, give them warmth, hold them in your hand, take them on your lap, give a little food—the animal or its baby will be so happy. A little puppy, when you pet it, pets you back with its tongue. Place your hand down and it tries to give you pus. It is truth. The cat that arches its back, moves around your calves, or a hare, or a Pogel, or a little horse. We can make all living beings happy if we offer love from our heart. We are building a great tower, a tower of love. But if someone feeds an animal with love and then comes with a knife to kill it, the entire tower palace collapses. The mountains of hope crumble. The palace of hope collapses. This means you accumulate much more bad karma because you have misused the trust of this being. You hurt it, and the living being looks into your eyes and asks, "Where is your love? Oh, human, was that a game? Or was that true love?" Do not do that. Not to anyone—not to an animal, not to a human being. And it is also unnecessary for the plants. This is very, very important. When children are grown, we take them to the āśrama, or to a temple, a mosque, a stūpa, or a church. We enlighten them about who the deity is. Who is God? What does God mean? From time to time, on birthdays, Dīpāvalī, New Year, Christmas, and all such holy festivals, it is very important, especially for children who wait an entire year. "Oh, the Christ Child will bring something for the Christmas tree." A great love is felt by the child who tries to understand what God is. According to faith, one receives an initiation—Mantra-Dīkṣā or Saṃskāras, or baptizing—meaning you are helping a soul to build up hope, love, power, and happiness for life, to grow, to live, to do something good for themselves and for us. How beautiful. But if one is constantly on vacation, constantly has a babysitter, constantly at parties, and the children are home alone, the babysitter asleep, the child quickly closes their eyes. When the babysitter leaves, the child inwardly says, "Mommy." No matter what sounds are in the house, the child thinks, "Oh, my parents are coming home." Just like a bhakta, a heart of a bhakta speaks: "The door of my heart, open wide I keep for Thee. Will Thou come? Will Thou come? Just once come to me. Will my day pass without seeing Thee, my Lord, night and day? I look for Thee, night and day. Mama, without You or Papa, I cannot go to sleep when I hear your little faces. I want to listen to a small tale, a fairy tale. Mother’s warmth, father’s warmth." This is the greatest, the highest healing power, the best remedy for the soul of the small child. Then our world will be in order—no struggling, no quarreling, no criminality. Why does this state exist in the world now? Guilt we can only place on the parents. Money is not everything, and your house is not everything. But your child is more important for you and for the whole world. There are wedding ceremonies. Not just the signing, except you to be a wife. Hokus pokus, many Pussy, harry home. Hokus pokus, many kissings, harry home. That’s it. Puṣitādi, puṣitam, poṣke, hariyom, ahoi. This is not a birth date. There are the mantras, there are the petitions, there are the words of a priest. In every religion, in the church, how beautiful the ceremonies are. You know, at the foundation of reality, every woman, every girl dreams that she is standing in front of the church, wearing beautiful white shoes, waiting for the son. In India, every woman, even little young girls, begin to pray. The little girls pray, they offer water to a Banyan tree in April, which is the sacred month, and tie a beautiful thread with the wish that they may find a good, healthy, and kind husband. You have a wonderful, sacred, and very good man. They fast, they sing songs. A great joy. And then, when she is older, 15, 16, 20 years, she dreams of a beautiful henna design. And blim, blam. A beautiful sari. And the first time, her husband holds her hand. Her husband holds her hand. Not after ten days together and saying, "I do not want to marry you," or five years together and he says, "I will not marry you," or five years and he says, "We are separate." No, this is not a marriage. Can you imagine, this young girl or this young boy, waiting 10 or 20 years or 25 years or 18 years or 30 years? He has given his hand to no one except her father, mother, grandfather, or brother. But to be a woman and to be a man in love, what a man or a woman can give—that was a great dream to fulfill. You know, they begin to cry; men are not supposed to cry, a man must be good at repairing. Perhaps they are given tranquilizers so that they do not cry. But hardly does the priest, the Brāhmaṇa, the Paṇḍita, take the hand of the man, and then the young woman comes and in between gives something from the woman, and he mixes in a little henna. I do not know, because I am not married right now. But he interjects and brings his hands together. It pains their hearts because their lifelong dream, their prayer, has come true—that I have now begun a new life. And she has now begun a new life. She has been dreaming it long before, but in the dream there is no karma; you can dream, but it is only a dream. That is why you say it is a dreamer. And a fire ceremony. Fire is the presence, the attendance, or the witness of the celebration. Fire is the highest witness, God Himself. Fire is purity, and you give your words, you promise before the fire. If you break your word, the fire will burn you, it will punish you. A human word is significant. And if you break your promise, then you must face the consequences. Then the mantras come, and the fire ceremony follows. Man or his wife has some error and blood has bloodiness, a whole joy, what you have built, your joy, your entire happiness, the palace of your happiness, is like an earthquake in your heart. And so a man and a woman who joyfully accompany each other throughout life, and the soul also assists with them. Then it is beautiful to work. Then it is beautiful to be married. The man comes home and says, "You are stupid, you are insane, you are crazy, you are so messed up, oh God, what have you done, oh God, oh my God." Or the woman says, "You are completely foolish, you are crazy, where have you been, do you always think too much, you stink," because there is no love and the children feel it. Oh yes, they feel it. Therefore, a united family is very important—grandparents, parents, sisters, uncles, relatives, edge, pante, aunt, edge, bundle, and, and,... and where we gather beneath the trees, until evening time. How blessed are the families. We need that. And you know, when we older people, like parents, grandparents, aunt, and uncle, and uncle, and niece, and cousin, and whatever, are together, can you imagine the joy of little children? It is incredible how happy little children are. They go to these, each one will say so, each is caressed. Everyone is in the lab, getting beautiful tattoos, and the cats and dogs are all happy. We are helping the souls to build themselves up, to guide them onto a beautiful path, a healthy family, a happy family. A good family creates a good society, a good country, and a good future for all beings. And this we will achieve through yoga in daily life. I am saying every day that we should live together like this, happily. We are a yoga family, and we should ensure that we set an example. After the wedding, that is the highest time. Then where to? That is the question. When you marry, it means your greed, your joy, what you have, you must share half and half. The joy you have, you must share with your wife. A part of the family is bid farewell; the soul departs. And what do we do? A prayer, a funeral ceremony. That means we all pray to bring the soul into light, into the eternal light, into peace, into the divine light, into the sacred peace and light, and according to your faith, into heaven or into Brahmaloka. Then after a few days we will perform a ceremony to liberate this soul from the Earth and from the family. Those who have departed are called Ancestors, Pitṛ, Pitṛloka. This means that at this moment they are in Pitṛloka. For human beings, this is Dharma, specifically towards their own children. They perform a special ceremony for the deceased, especially for departed parents, so that from Pitṛloka they can return to the astral world, to Devaloka, where they can be reborn or attain liberation. If you do nothing for your parents, your grandparents, then they remain stuck there. And you have no further way because you have the traffic jam, this red light. It is our duty that our siblings, our parents, or our children are measured like our parents, according to our faith, to perform a ceremony or a contemplation. Just now, the ceremony was according to Hinduism. Especially, the power is in India, in the city called Gayā, in the city of Gayā, Bodh Gayā, Buddha Gayā, where Buddha attained his enlightenment. That is the place where people usually go for these Pitṛ ceremonies. If anyone believes that my ancestors did not receive this bestowal, or if I am afraid that someone is still there, then go there and perform a ceremony. Now the beginning of November is coming. You must turn around freshly. Also the time of All Saints and all the blessed ones. We first celebrate for the saints and then for our families. Everyone goes to the cemetery. If you do not believe, then why do you go to the cemetery? Secondly, whom do you visit at the courtyard of the path? Where is the soul, where is your father? Where is the soul of your father? There are only the bones, perhaps not only the bones are there. But our religion, our faith, tells us it is human, it is a family duty, it is the family’s responsibility to go to the birthplace, to the places of birth, and to pray for them. Yes, they are not there. They are gone. But for us, Āsthā Kendra is a point, a place for our faith. For example, we travel to India and we go to Gurujī’s Samādhi. There, in the mind, we bow, we speak with him, we offer flowers, we meditate. And in meditation, we feel that Gurujī is sitting before us. Or Mahāprabhujī’s samādhi, His āśrama, His sacred bed, His holy shoes—for us, everything is sacred. To touch our forehead once to his shoes is like touching our forehead once to his bedcover. He has his shoes and his blanket on his bed. That means a lot. His power and His grace come. So we pray for our forefathers and the souls that are present or being reborn; it doesn’t matter where they are, they will receive this positive energy from us. For example, someone has done something wrong and now he is in prison. Do you know what that means, prison? Who was it? Visualize, work. One such person is in prison. And the relatives, or let’s say, we go to the Honorable President, the State President. We say, we go to the president, to the prime minister, or we take a lawyer, or the family takes an advocate, and we ask, we request them, we plead, we beg them to help, please forgive and free this person and let them go free. Is that correct? True? So what does that mean? Support. Sometimes we bribe with money. And the advocate takes money. Yes? And this bribe means you must give a donation, offer a gift, so that the gods quickly come to work for you. We must make a donation so that the tendons and all others will help you quickly. Do you know why we give a donation? That is it, to give a donation, to help. We say, feed the poor animals, feed the poor animals, the horses, all living beings, even fish are fed. But nothing, with this thought that we will kill a fish, not that. No, not like that. Everything you do—praying, positive thinking, meditating for your ancestors or for your children who have passed away—has a very powerful effect. It works. And in this way, we can, as a second person, help the soul to forgive bad deeds. The human mind has such power, and the human being knows how—and above all, there is one refuge: God and prayer, and that we learn this in religions. So the people should not be angry with religion. Many people say, "Oh, the church and this, and the swāmījīs and the gurus, and the temples and the religion." This is a negative thought from human beings, from people; this is blackmailing. Religion is there for your well-being, for your present, for your future. Yes, go there and pray and believe where your heart has the strength. God is a matter of the heart. God is a difficult topic, love, love, spirituality is a very personal matter, and through your personal prayer and through your personal will come back to you as well. The forefathers, the Pitṛ, will bestow their blessings upon you. They have given you a lifelong blessing and wish you the best. And now, when you pray for them, or you pray to them, they will give you a blessing. And this you can feel, for example, on my world tour. When I was in Australia, the Aborigines in Australia, what they do first is pray, give thanks, and express gratitude to the Ancestors. Then we were in New Zealand with the locals, the Māoris, and the first thing they do is welcome you. They say, "We welcome you in our Ancestors’ Land." And they pray and sail you in the name of the Ancestors. In India, in the Upaniṣad it is said, "Mātṛ Devo Bhava," Mother is the first God. "Pitṛ Devo Bhava," Father is the second God. "Ācārya Devo Bhava," and the teacher, or your spiritual teacher, your religious teacher, is the third. And so on, we learn from them to receive blessings, to obtain their healing. Then I came to America, and the indigenous people, or the ex-Americans, who are called Indians, we were in Los Angeles for the Peace Bell Ringing. Peace Bell is a very historical thing. After the disaster that happened in Japan, in Hiroshima, people from all over the world were sending coins to the UN, to Hiroshima. There were so many that the Japanese were wondering what to do with all these coins, and they melted them all down. And from these seven great bells, they have gifted seven great spheres. And have gifted these seven bells to the UNO. The UN has installed these seven bells in parks in various countries. And in Los Angeles, it is the sixth bell. Once a year, on World Peace Day, organized by the UNO, the UN, and local governments, special individuals, spiritual persons or government officials, people, people who have all suffered misfortune, those who died in this Hiroshima disaster. And there was a Native American in his traditional attire, wearing a hat with eagle feathers, everything transformed, in full Native American dress, which I saw for the first time. And his wife was as well, and he also had a sacred staff. The Mahāmaṇḍaleśvara have the staff in their hand. And this staff, according to Hinduism, is called Dharmadaṇḍa. Dharma means righteousness. And Dharmadaṇḍa means staff. A king also establishes laws and enforces punishment; he sets rules for the people, and if they do not follow them, they will be punished. But the king himself comes and sits on his throne, on his king’s chair. And he says, "This law applies only to you, I am a king and I am nothing." And then his Gurudeva, the king’s Gurudeva, comes with a Dharmadaṇḍa, with a bamboo. And he struck the king’s head three times. And he says, "O King, how can you say such a thing? One law applies to all, whether you are a king or a commoner. If you misuse power then, then,... then. Dharma will hurt you, whoever possesses Dharma, Dharma will hurt you, the truth and justice." So the natives in America have the same or a similar stick on the claw of the eagles. How do you say it? Claw. And he said a prayer while his wife was sitting there. He has given the daṇḍa, this stick, to his wife, and they were elderly people. And the woman sat there holding this stick on the ground and said, "What should I do?" A meaningful "Lift it up. Don’t touch the ground. It’s not a walking stick or for beauty. It’s a symbol." And in Christ, Christians have the staff for the Shepherd. The Shepherd who is gathering the sheep, so in church you have the same dharmendriya, so dharma means rightness or unrighteousness. So everywhere they were praying, or he was praying before they were praying the bell, and he said, "And in the name of all my ancestors of this land and the Holy Spirit of the Ancestors, I bless you all." And what happened? Five leaves were falling from the tree. Exactly in this moment. I seek their blessing, and five leaves fall down. And I told the others, "Look." He seeks the blessing, and I told the others, "Look. Collect his five leaves." So in every culture, in every faith, in every religion, wherever there are people, the ancestors, the forebears, are revered. Their energy is returning to us, and our energy, our prayer and good wishes, our ceremonies reach them. If you donate or give something in the name of someone, it reaches, surely it reaches. And if we do not have this feeling for ourselves, then you are lost.... Do not think, "Oh, that I do not care for my family." No. It was a time when the family tradition was being abandoned. It was used, and it remained, as you say, like a dynasty. Everyone was part of this family line. And that was more beautiful. And it was even more beautiful. But God Kṛṣṇa writes in the Bhagavad-Gītā, in Kali-Yuga, in Kali-Yuga, everyone will be Warren Shankar. And when Warren Shankar comes, then Kali-Yuga becomes unbearable. Then one cannot stand it. Warren Shankar means a seed driven from this field into another field, and from that field into a third field. From a hedgehog to a horse and back to a mule. And so on and so forth. Everything is changing with genetic technology—the trees, the fruits, the vegetation, the seeds, the grains, the animals, the people, and the people. What we are saying is that we are being dried out. And through this, the Buddhi, the Buddhi has also become confused. And so we think, according to the different energies that come together within us. That is the Dharma of nature. And oh human, you should not have done that. You would not have done that. For your greed, for your expectation, for your desire, for your longing, you would not have done that. That you have disturbed the whole of nature, thrown it into inequality, brought unbalance—human, human—not only will this nature suffer, but first of all you will suffer. And this is unfortunately the actual state in the whole world, that the people,... the people,... for everyone is destroyed, everything is destroyed, and there will be hope for us if we can help in this direction. In this way, every other person and everyone who chants the mantra, who repeatedly chants the Gurumantra, always repeating the Gurumantra, and just as karma can influence the soul, with your prayer you can also influence other souls. You must do it. We must do it. And we should follow the traditions and principles. A person understands what tradition is. A person understands what family means. So, try to remain there. That would be nice. Yes, emancipation is too vast. But emancipation does not mean throwing all of that into a village. All four years, the seasons have several months, and it is beautiful—nature operates according to these seasons, but human beings do not honor this. Therefore, day by day, the problems in the world are arising, and so our answer is only one: spiritual development, spiritual thoughts, spirituality, according to your belief, according to your abilities and love for all creatures. Live vegetarian, help Mother Earth and all the souls who are suffering between the big stable and the butchering place, between the stable and the butcher, back and forth. It is a great problem. There are too many negative vibrations around the people. And in this way, we must understand and observe and contemplate your soul as well as your ancestors. We can also pray for our neighbors. Yes, it will. If there is a beautiful rose, and it begins to emit fragrance, it does not come only to you; it also comes to your neighbor. When the sun rises, the light reaches everyone. Our prayer goes to everyone. Dharmu rakṣita rakṣita ham dharmadant dharmadant. With this, I wish you all the best and a wonderful afternoon, Sunday, and I hope that something has become clear. If you have any questions, please send them to me; I will try to answer you. The truth sometimes changes, but I was speaking what should be according to our ancestors. So every young person, I will say, do not rush to get rid of your emotions. Wait. Wait. Your ideal person will come as your husband or wife. Your ideal partner will come as your husband or wife; be happy on that day and wait for that day. If you have given away multiple times, then you have already shattered yourself into thousands of pieces. Comfort of your desires. All the best, and we will have a meditation afterwards. We will have a meditation in 15 minutes, and then the program will end, the webcast will end. And dear viewers, international ones, we will be in India; tomorrow I am traveling to India, and it will be broadcast from the India webcast. It will be in Hindi, it will be in English, and beautiful, heartfelt bhajans will be sung in the Satsangs. I am happy for you and I am also happy to be with you, in India, in the Ashram, in Jadam, in Omashram, or via webcast. I pray to God for your health, for peace, for harmony and happiness in your family, and for health and God’s blessing. Om Śānti. Bhagavān kī chāyā. Mahādeva kī chāyā. As the eternal dharma of Dharmasamrāṭ Satguru Swāmīmādhvānandīgurudeva is true, and if you wish to hear this lecture once more, it can be sent to you via the webcast. So please send your request to the webcast team.
