Human Life - a Golden Chance

An evening satsang on the preciousness and purpose of human life in the Kali Yuga.

"Human life is a golden chance to achieve higher consciousness or become one with God."

"If you protect dharma, dharma will protect you. For example, the dharma of your eyes is to see. If you can't protect your eyesight, I can't protect you."

The lecturer addresses attendees and a global webcast audience, exploring the spiritual challenges of the current age. He narrates the allegory of King Kali entering the world through gold, discusses how attachment and fear lead to suffering, and explains the inescapable law of karma and rebirth. He stresses the importance of mercy (dayā) as the foundation of dharma and concludes with a story about a master freeing a disciple and a snake from a cycle of karmic revenge.

Adoration to the Divine Masters, Bhagavān Dīpnārā Mahāprabhujī, Devapurījī, and Holy Gurujī. Good evening, dear brothers and sisters, and also the spiritual seekers around the world who are with us through webcast. Sorry to be late. There were certain things that happened, so it was not on purpose. We can't excuse because of the technology; the technique was also perfect. Our dear sister, Kīrpā, took care and gave a beautiful meditation. Now you can close the door, no problem. Thank you. Yesterday and today, the subject was given: human life is a golden chance. Yesterday I spoke about gold, so I will not repeat today. But in some glimpses, gold has become precious in Kali Yuga. You know what yugas means? Ages. Satyayuga, the time of truth. Dvāparayuga, the time of ceremonies. Treta Yuga, the time of knowledge. And Kali Yuga is the time for devotion. In Kali Yuga, this iron time, dark age, terrible things happen; it has been said before already. In the Holy Vedas, it is written exactly from which date to which date and how, what will happen. And everything is happening according to that. When Kali Yuga entered our earth, there was a king who was responsible for everything. The king was happy because in his kingdom, on this earth, everything was perfect and peaceful. So he gave place to all in his kingdom. Then one person came and said, "King, I would like to have a place also in your kingdom on this earth." He said, "From where are you coming? Who are you?" So he said, "I am Kali Yuga. I am this dark age." The king said, "Can you introduce what are the specialties of this Kali Yuga?" So he taught all these horrible things that can happen. "And, King, you can't stop. It will happen. What I request you, if you can give me a place." The king said, "Well, I cannot give when you bring so many troubles here." So he said, "Give me a place where there is a very small thing on this earth. So I know, king, that you will never refuse anyone. And if you refuse, you will lose your principles." Then the king asked him, "Suggest to me, what is a very small thing on this earth? Where you would like to have your place?" He said, simply, gold. The king smiled and said, "Oh, I thought you would ask for half of the kingdom. This gold, okay, is nothing." And Kali Yuga said, "Thank you. King, you should know that you will be my slave." He said, "No, I will not be." Next day, that king got a golden crown on his head. And the king was looking at it. And Kali Yuga said, "Look, I am sitting on your head." And so the gold, the money, in this Kali Yuga became a god. In the life story of Jesus, when he came to the temple with his disciples, outside the temple people were making business with the gold, exchanging the gold, and there was a very beautiful golden bull, so they wanted to sell on this. And Jesus said, "You people are all taking this gold as a god. But it is not a god, it is a gold." Jesus tells his disciples, "This is a wrong god. What I am telling you is the way to God." Those who are stuck in the gold... we all know that in the Bible it is written, "I am the way to God." The rest they didn't write, gold. Now, in Kali Yuga, in this time, money is gold. Money means gold. But the old thoughts of the Vedas and spiritualities and Indian spiritual wisdom—I'm not talking about the present Indians, they are involved as others are involved in gold—we used to say, "Vāsudeva kuṭumbakam." The whole world is one God's family. The whole world is one family. Treat all as your own family. Then there is no dualism, no discrimination. Doesn't matter which country, which culture, which color. We all take as our human family, but we lost this. So, the spiritual person thinks the world is a family, and who is not spiritual, who is affected by Kali Yuga, thinks the world is a market. And so, there are challenges, competitions, running to realize the money, gold—who is the richest, who is the richest. How many? Oh, that comes in the list of the rich ones. This is the richest one, and people forgot who is a spiritualist. Everyone goes and studies MBA and this and that. Very few go to study to become a swami, a sādhu. My company and my employment door is open. All can come and become. Sanyāsī, no problem, and you will have a very happy, better, and good life. No, that we don't want. So, where you enter and jump into the māyā of the world, then you have to go through the disappointment. Expectation leads to disappointment. The one who loves you very much will one day go away from you or will die. So either one dies or one goes away. It is the same. It's gone away from you. Nothing is permanent. What you have, this was yesterday someone's, and now you have, tomorrow will be someone's. Why are you crying? It's given to you. But that we don't understand. We are just holding. It is my, my. But nothing is mine. Only our karma is ours. That will not leave us free, karma. Karma, our actions, is like a shadow of our body. Doesn't matter how far you will run or you fly with an aeroplane, as soon as you get off, you will be surprised, your shadow is beside you. Similarly, when this physical body will die or separate from your soul—yes, the body is gone—but the karma, the actions which we did through the body, will not go away. They will go with. So what we call the fruits of our actions is known as destiny, kismat. And this destiny will lead our astral being, our soul, in the direction where we are going. Therefore, in this yuga, Kali-yuga, it is very hard to get detachment. Problem is attachment. Where there is love, there is no pain. Where there is love, there is no suffering. Where there is love, there is freedom and happiness. And where there is attachment, there is jealousy, there is suffering, there is doubt, there is restlessness, and there is no love because of attachment. Attachment, the roots of attachment are fear. Everything happens because of fear, the fear of losing something. So this watch, which I have here, is very dear and very precious to me, but I am afraid that somebody will steal it. So I will put it somewhere in a locker, and I am afraid, if I die, what will happen with that? So if I have, I have a problem. If I don't have, I have a problem. How to do? This is my very dear one, and now he is looking at my watch, and I think, and I think of God. He will take away. But as a social and polite gesture, I will not show him anger, but inside I will say, "Jealous." Why does he want to take it away? So it doesn't matter what it is. When a small child gets a toy and another child wants to take the toy, the child will cry and will be jealous. I don't want to get mine. Children are acting, but one day will come the child automatically will forget this toy and will begin to search another toy. And that another toy has already prepared jealousy. And then, after some time, you will forget this, and you will search for another toy of spirituality. So life is a struggle and a journey, not a destination. But if this journey leads us to the right way or not? So fear creates jealousy, jealousy creates anger, that anger creates hate, and that hate creates revenge, and revenge creates greed, and that greed creates dominating positions. So this all is in one circle because of the fear, fear from death. Perhaps we are not afraid of dying, but we are very fearful of how we will die. Maybe you are lucky, or one just has a heart attack and finishes. For a few seconds or minutes, you can't breathe and are gone. Or brain attack or something. But there are some people who have accidents and are half injured, can't move, blood is flowing, very painful, or in the fire. You can't open the window, you can't open the door, you are on the ninth or tenth floor, and you are also afraid to jump out. It's not easy, my dear, to experience that you are burning in the fire of life. So, maybe we are not afraid of death, but we are afraid of that process, how it will be. Will someone kill us? Will someone put us somewhere? This all is happening according to our destiny, and destiny is the fruits of our past actions or karmas. So, we can't blame God. We can't blame our parents. Parents give us only the birth. But they can't give us the destiny. Parents can give us education, they can warn us, but we have to go through. Out of 8.4 million different creatures, one is the human. And God gave that intellect to the humans to decide. So God said, "I do not want to interfere in your action, because I gave you everything in freedom." Go ahead, do it. But you have freedom to do the action, but you have no freedom to choose the fruits or the result. That I will choose. But I give, O human, to you the intellect and intelligence, the vivekā. Before doing something, you should know what your form is and what you are doing. That time, your inner intuition or your inner wisdom will tell you, when you do this, this will be the result, the fruit. Still, you do it; you will get karma accordingly. You knew that. So, we put the seeds of the thorny, thorny bush. How can we expect from them beautiful cherries? Dejavān Sāgā, Mukhḍā Dekh Praṇī Darpaṇme. O human, look at your face in the mirror. How many good karmas do you have in your life, and how many bad ones do you have? We can't hide. We know what we did, and we know what we are afraid of. Other creatures also have destiny, and unfortunately, they have no free decision. You drive a car on the highway or any road, and beside you passes one truck, and this truck is full of pigs inside. These pigs have no power to tell, "Please don't take me to the slaughterhouse." And unfortunately, we don't have any power to stop the truck and say, "Hey, leave them free." We know what will happen. We see what is happening. But we also have no power to save someone; otherwise, you will be the victim. This is Kali Yuga. Animals, birds, or any creatures, they have to go through the destiny. So, a few years ago, I met one very old sannyāsī. He was above 100 years old. In Fiji, I met him, and there were about three or four hundred people sitting, and he was giving a talk like I am. And he was very old and very experienced, and people adored him very, very much. He said, "How much chicken meat do you eat? That many times you have to be born as a chicken and give your neck. My dear, this is a fair business. Do it. Decide it. How many goats or sheep's meat did you eat? That many times you have to be born as a goat or a sheep, and you have to give your neck, and that one will eat you." This is called what the United Nations is searching for. The United Nations is searching for sustainable development. So, this is the sustainable development of the cycle of birth and death. Put all the souls in this endless process of dying and being born, dying and being born. You put, box him, then he boxes you back, and so on. Finally, we should come once, someone said, "If one hits your left cheek, you can show the right cheek." That means now you came out of the game, but before the person will show you the hand palm to slap your cheek, already you are ready. I know I have been playing the karate, one hand here and one leg there, so we give, in India we used to say. If someone throws a brick at you, we will throw a stone at you. That is where the knowledge and Christianity's wisdom is, if you believe as a Christian. So everything is changing. So there was one old man sitting. He had this Parkinson's disease and was moving his hands like this. He was sitting and listening to the lecture of that Swāmījī. And he said, "I will not eat anymore. Guru, I will not eat any more animals. Free me." He awoke inside that fear. Believe or not believe, if you believe or if you don't believe, it doesn't change the reality. So if you believe me or you don't believe me, the reality will not change. Let's say that tomorrow the sun will not rise at all. The sun will not rise. We all believe, but we will be surprised: 6:30, the sun rises. So if you believe in rebirth or not, don't worry. Very soon, after death, you will be like a little baby. All babies are good and every mother is good, but which mother? Where will you be? We have no decisions. Unfortunately, at the beginning of creation, the rules were given, and this is called karma, destiny. That is all we have to come here to develop, to get liberation. I don't know if you have heard one story from Greece, and there was one king, a real story. Story. And the king got one son, and he went to the astrologist, and he went to someone, a clairvoyant, and both said, "King, your son has a very nice, good, bright future and everything, but one thing is not good." He said, "What?" "This boy will marry his wife, or his mother." The king said, "He will marry his mother?" "Yes. In his destiny, that he will marry the mother." He thinks so, so he called the shepherds and told the shepherds, "Take him into the forest and throw him somewhere, to wild animals or anywhere. Kill him. I don't want such a son." And they thought, "We will not kill." They just put him somewhere under the bushes in the forest, where there are many snakes and things like that. Jisko rake saiyan mārasake, na koi balan bāka karsake, jo jag bairī hoi. Clear? Yes. I'm very proud that you understand Hindi also. To whom God will protect, no one can harm. Not one hair can be damaged, even if the whole world is against you. So the biggest protector is God. Anyhow, some other shepherd found him and took him home. He grew up with them. There was another lady, her name was Sophie, and this is Sophia. Kaliya, she also tells the future. And she saw him and she said, "Don't come near to me. You are the sinner. You will marry your mother." Now, this young man, he was about 15 or 18 years old, very sad. And he doesn't know where his mother is, or who his father is. So he said, "God, please don't lead me to my mother." And he closed his eyes, and he was turning for a long, long time, then he stopped. And then, well, which direction was his face? He used to walk in. After some days, again he closed his eyes, and he was walking, turning and turning and... then he stopped. So he was praying, "Lord, don't do this to me, please." And there was a war, a civil war, and the king died, and the queen was fighting, and this young man was there, and also he had to go and fight. And somehow the queen fell in love, and he married her, and then they found out it was her son. What was the name? So, my dear, destiny. If we believe or not, it will come back to us. If you do anything to an animal, have the same pain. An animal mother has the same love for her children or babies as we, our human mother has love. But they can't do anything against it. They are innocent, they are poor, they have to go through their karma. But you see their eyes, tears falling. You will never see animals crying, but when they come into the slaughterhouse, it is not easy. Therefore, it is said, ahiṁsā paramodharamaha, non-violence is the highest principle. Don't do to others what you don't like to be done to you. So, O human, don't think that you are a human and now you are like a god and you can do all. No, no, no. That's the biggest mistake. But through the human body and through human intellect, through human kindness and mercy, a human can become a divine, holy person, and from divine to God. Because God, if we imagine, either God has no form, or if God has a form, then He must have some form. So, God, mostly we imagine as a human, comes with a lot of miracles. Or, in certain cases, comes half animal and half human. So you see many mythological pictures and statues from the American Indians, or Greece and India and so on, half horse and half human, half lion and half human. So there have been many, many stories. So, if you believe or you don't believe, reality will not change. Believe or not believe, that's why many people say we don't believe in reincarnation, because they don't understand. Now, in this Kali Yuga, the last few decades, we are talking a lot about organic food and pollution. What we call "use and throw." Use and throw, but where? On this earth, and it will come back to us. So we are using some papers and things called recycling. Organic recycling. Do you know what recycling means? You believe in recycling or not? Yes. So if you believe in recycling, where is the problem to believe in reincarnation? Yes, it is the same process. What is changed? The form is changed. So there is God, and God is merciful. He gave us a great, great chance, but we... In Kali Yuga, we say human life is a golden chance. So in this way, we shall understand this life. But human life is given to us as a protector, not as a distractor. So here, humans are as a great helper and protector. So in the holy book in Ramayana, who wrote this book? Tulsīdās said, "Dayā dharma kā mūla hai, pāpa mūla hai abhimān." Tulsīdās: the roots, the foundation of the dharma, right-house-ness, is the mercy. If you lose the mercy, you lose the human life. If you lose the mercy, then you are only in the body of a human, but you lose that human principle. So, kindness, and we understand. Anyone may take revenge, but a human should not. Dayā, mercy. And that's why the Christians are repeating the mantra, "Holy Mother Maria, pray for thy mercy." Holy Mother Maria, pray for thy mercy. This is a mantra. So, that same mercy is in every mother's heart. You can pray for his mercy also, not only her mercy. Dayā dharam kamure. Dharma means religion, principles, disciplines, right house, nation, everything. Dharma. Dharma rakṣita rakṣita. If you protect dharma, dharma will protect you. For example, the dharma of your eyes is to see. If you can't protect your eyesight, I can't protect you. The dharma of your knees, ankle joints, and hip joints is to walk. If you don't take care of them, just take a hammer and break them both. Then you can't run. So if you can't protect your knees, ankle joints, and hip joints, they can't protect you. Dharma is lost, faith is lost, which means that a bird has lost its wings. Now the bird has lost its wings, and the death of the cat is coming. The cat is doing so, and what is the bird doing? Cat would like to fly away. She is moving her muscles, but there are no wings. The wings are lost. Similarly, my dear, when the human loses this dharma and faith, it becomes a victim of that death, going back to the lower form of life. Daya is mercy, and every human has dayā. Every mother has dayā. Every father has dayā. Daya dharma kā mūla hai, pāpa kā mūla abhimāna. And the foundation, the cause, the principle of sin is abhimān, ego, pride. They are saying like this: "We can kill, we can eat." It is said, animals are for your use. Yeah, for not using means in your field, not for eating. It will come back, don't worry. Recycling, you will eat that, and that will eat you. But someone must be there who can make the end of this cycle. Daya dharam ka mool hai, paap mool abhiman. Tulsi daya na chhodiye. Therefore, Tulsīdās said, "Never give up mercy." Jab lākh ghaṭme prāṇ, as long as you have life in your heart. After, we don't know what will happen to our body, but as long as we have love in our heart, we will not forget. There is a small story, and then I will finish. When the master and disciples were traveling, walking, and whenever the sunset was, wherever they were, they were sleeping, in the forest or anywhere. One evening, the master said to the disciple, "There is a problem." He said, "Master, what is the problem?" "Tonight, one of us should be awakened. So who wants to sleep first, you or me?" So the disciple said, "Master, you sleep first. When you wake up, then I will sleep a bit." So the master was sleeping. The disciple was sitting, looking at everything. One o'clock, one thirty, the master woke up and said to the disciple, "Now you can go to sleep. I will guard, I will be here, sleep." So, after walking the whole day, he was tired. Now he's sitting till one o'clock, two o'clock. He was so tired, some disciples slept. Around 2:30 or 3 o'clock in the night, through the dry leaves and grass, some sound came. What is that? Moonlight, and suddenly a big black cobra snake was coming. Stop, who are you? "Where are you going?" the cobra said. "I have a revenge with this man, with your disciple, many, many lives," he said. "What kind of revenge?" "He kills me, and I kill him. So now, in the last life, I killed him, but I became a snake. And now he becomes a human, and I am going to kill him." He said, "What? Will it not stop? How many lives?" He said, "Several lives we are repeating this. I become a human or other creature, and he bites me or he kills me." So the master said, "What do you want? Can we do one deal, that it stops?" He said, "I want to drink one cup of blood from him. From your disciple." He said, "Only blood?" He said, "Yes." "Then will it be finished?" "Yes," he said, "from my side it is finished." "Then, stay where you are. O day, O sin, stay there." He went, master and disciple were living deep. And the master sat on his body, and he had a knife. So he tried to take blood, knife in hand, and the disciple opened his eyes. The master is sitting on him with a knife. He closed his eyes again. Who? The disciple slept further, and he slept so deep. The master took some blood, and when one cup was full, he tied it with salt and put it there. The snake drank the blood, and the snake said, "Lord, thank you very much. We were stuck in this cycle of birth and death through revenge. Now I'm happy and free." Okay, finished. Next morning, Master asked the disciple, "Have you seen something in the night?" He said, "Master, no." "You didn't see me; I was sitting on you." He said, "Yes, that I saw. I opened my eyes, and what have you seen? You know, you had a knife in your hands and were sitting on me." "You were not afraid?" He said, "No, why should I be afraid? Whatever you will do, Master, you will do good for me, so why should I be afraid? I just slept further." So that much we should have confidence in God, or who gives us good lessons, definitely will not lead us to the lower life. Therefore, human life is a golden chance to achieve higher consciousness or become one with God. Otherwise, we can come in the same meal, like grinding the corn and recycling process, the cosmic recycling process. How many years will we be in the astral world? How many years or months will we be in the mother's womb? When will we be born, and how will life be? So finally, coming to God consciousness, there will be no more such troubles. We have to renounce something. As we are human, it does not mean that we can now do whatever we want. You can do it, but you have to suffer the consequences. So, my dear, today's end is very late, already 9:30. Next time, I think we will not go to the doctor or somewhere, okay? Thank you, and wish you good night. God bless you. And the next webcast will be tomorrow. Tomorrow is no webcast. Thursday will be webcast. Tomorrow is a midday, Wednesday, so when the day is there, there is no more webcast. When the day is dark and heavy and the way is hard to find, just lay it in your heart. Do not let your heart be worried. Just keep one thought. It's better to light a candle than to stand in the dark when the day is dark and the way is hard to find. So therefore, Guruvār, Thursday, okay? Thursday, everybody. Thursday for what? Wisdom. Shānti, Shānti, Shānti.
