A spiritual discourse on the Maṇipūra chakra, the five kośas (sheaths), and modern life.

"Our physical body is suffering because our nourishment is manipulated. Our habits are different, our tastes are different."

"Spirituality, no one can defeat. And in spirituality is humbleness. Not fight, no competition."

The lecturer addresses a hall and webcast audience, continuing a series on the Maṇipūra chakra. He explains how this energy center balances the five kośas—physical, energetic, mental, intellectual, and blissful—and critiques modern pollution, artificial living, and overemphasis on physical strength over spiritual power. Using stories from the Mahābhārata and teachings of Kabīr, he emphasizes practice, selfless action, and inner awakening. The talk includes audience questions on free will, purifying karma, and spiritual practice.

Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya, Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya, Hara Hara Bole, Namaḥ Śivāya, Namaḥ Śivāya, Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya, Hara Hara Bole, Namaḥ Śivāya, Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya, Har Har Bhole Namaḥ Śivāya, Namaḥ Śivāya Oṁ Namaḥ... Bhole Namaḥ Śivāya. Oṁ Śānti, Śānti, Śānti. Blessings to all of you in this hall and elsewhere, and to those who are with us through our webcast. By the blessing of Mahāprabhujī, we had two webcast lectures every day. So many brothers and sisters benefited very much from the spiritual experience. We are looking forward to the coming week again, to have everyday programs and lectures. We will continue the subject of the Maṇipūra Chakra. Those who are here, those who are going back tomorrow, and a new one is coming, please read the Hidden Powers in Humans book, and especially the section on the Maṇipūra Chakra. You will have a little idea about it, and more in practice will be announced later. The Maṇipūra Chakra is very beneficial and very important for our physical health, and also for our psychic or mental health. It is very supportive and very important for spiritual development. The Maṇipūra Chakra balances the entire system in the body. In this way, all five kośas—meaning all five different bodies—are balanced, guided, and kept healthy through the Maṇipūra Cakra. These five kośas are known as Annamaya Kośa, Prāṇamaya Kośa, Manomaya Kośa, Vijñānamaya Kośa, and Ānandamaya Kośa. Kośa means the quarter, chamber, or one layer of our being. One kośa is our physical body, but that is the body of solid and liquid nourishment; that is why I call it Annamaya Kośa. Anna is food, corn, seeds, nourishment. Annamaya Kośa has a very strong influence on the other kośas. We are aware of Annamaya Kośa, and this is one of the problems with humans: the way of nourishing has become very artificial and unnatural. Animals have still kept their principle, their nature, except house pets or those animals which are kept in some big farms, in some big halls for slaughtering. If you see a wild pig and a pig kept somewhere in some hall or room, they have a completely different condition—health condition, mental condition, everything. We humans don’t care about these animals. The main thing is that they get more muscles so you can gain meat from them. But those animals, they are very poor. Like when we are ill, we feel unpleasant; similarly, they feel that also. So humans have captured certain animals; they are suffering, and we humans are suffering also. The natural way of life is lost. The people who are living in the mountains, the different tribes, have better immunity and better physical condition. They can run anytime, and even if they don’t eat for one or two days, they don’t feel so weak. And we, yesterday, were fasting. By one o’clock, everyone’s face became down. Until evening, oh God. And especially hard were coffee and tea. But some were going to the coffee restaurant. It was very good to support the shopkeeper, the restaurant keeper. In this way, we can do good things for others also. So our physical body is suffering because our nourishment is manipulated. Our habits are different, our tastes are different. After that comes the Prāṇamaya Kośa. Prāṇa is of two kinds. One is what we are receiving from the cosmic light, and the second is what we receive through our nourishment and through the environment. So wherever we are, there is pollution. It is everywhere in this space also, and we can’t immigrate somewhere higher than three to four thousand meters. After five thousand meters, six thousand meters, maybe the air is a little better, but that’s also polluted because we see the glaciers are completely dark. You saw yesterday, glaciers on the videos; this is Satopat and Swargarohini. At that time, all was covered with glaciers. Glaciers were thick, like 10 meters. And the story of the Pāṇḍavas is that they did not die only because of the oxygen, but they were frozen, very cold. So there were no stones and rocks visible, and now only 10% is left. This is, you can see, all glaciers on the surface are black. Let’s go 8,000, 10,000 meters higher. There’s not enough space for us to live, but there’s also pollution. So the pollution has reached as far as this atmosphere goes, whatever we call temperature, with the air and the water. So one is cosmic energy that cannot be polluted, but the other prāṇa is from the air, which has different kinds of pollution which we know very well: sound pollution, electro-pollution, etc. So we do prāṇāyāma, but it is influenced by all these extra atmospheres as well. The food quality influences our prāṇāyāma. So we have to only take one thing, and this is: take it as it is. There is nowhere better, so we live in this world. Our prāṇa is polluted. Even when we do prāṇāyāma, we inhale and exhale, so the Prāṇamaya Kośa is also suffering. Then comes the Manomaya Kośa, the mental sheath, and that is also polluted through the way of living in this modern civilization. We think we are developed, we think we are very far. Yes, we are very far from here and very near to death. We are living, but we don’t have that energy, you know? These little children, they are running quickly and walking. Can we run like this now? No. One day you saw the five Pāṇḍavas, Arjuna and Bhīma. You know how strong they were, how they were running if you see the Mahābhārata video. And those mighty ones, body builders, and who want to achieve something, physical trainings, running, biking, to achieve something—what will you achieve? Finally, you see what the Pāṇḍavas were, those mighty ones. They were running quicker than the horses, and every step for them was something like very heavy, and they died. So Tulsīdāsajī said in Holy Rāmāyaṇa about Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa and his disciples, Gopīs and Gopās. Gopā is male disciples, and Gopī is female disciples. We can say how many Gopīs are sitting here and how many Gopās are sitting here. So, you are all my disciples, and you have the power, strength, and knowledge. So, they all had great knowledge, but when Kṛṣṇa died or gave up his body, then all who were with Kṛṣṇa in Dvārakā came back to Mathurā and Gokula, and decided to go back on the way. The tribes in the mountains, the Ādivāsī, they kidnapped all the Gopīs, and though Arjuna and all were there—and you know, only to see Arjuna, all people run away, the best in arrow archery—but even he couldn’t fight against them. So Tulsīdāsajī writes in his Rāmāyaṇa; he makes aware all of us, warning to all of us: "Tulasī naraka kyā badā śrama badā balavān kava luṭi gopyā?" What is the greatness of the strength of the human? Time is stronger than, oh man. The tribes kidnapped the Gopīs, though the same Arjuna and the same his arrow and his bow were there. Couldn’t do anything. So this physical strength which we have is very limited. And the time will come when it will become less and less. Therefore, it is said from Kabīr Dās, there are four things. There are certain things which are only for four days: Dhan, your money; your youthness; and the guest. They are only for four days, like two days before and two days after the full moon. The moon nights are all dark nights. So, if you want to make an experiment, if you want to achieve, you cannot through your body training, body works. It is good for some time, but finally that will not be you, so why are you proud of this? Therefore, the mighty power for us is our spirituality. So when Kṛṣṇa went, then Arjuna had no more power. Similarly, when the ātmā is gone, this body has no more power. So that was on the power of Kṛṣṇa; they all were happy and dancing and fighting and this. Your best friend is president. Now you are in the country, you think you are the president. But after five years, the president is gone. Then what is your condition? With whom you were not good, they will now take revenge. So the body, if you think it is something divine, it is something good—"I will achieve this, I will do this"—what? Arjuna wanted to be the best person in archery because Droṇācārya, his master in the school, promised that Arjuna would be one of the best in archery. And he became. But he was practicing day and night. Therefore it is said, "Kāunteya abhyāsa, abhyāsa, O Arjuna, practice, practice, practice." And his brother Bhīma, he was a very strong one. You know Bhīma rock? He could put a whole big rock to cross the river, like a bridge. And he was always hungry, always. He was eating about 20 people’s food. That’s why he became a strong Bhīma, and in school he was so hungry. In the school, one day in the night, he went into the kitchen and searched if there is something to eat. Everything was dark, and Arjuna followed him to see what he was doing. So Bhīma said, "Brother, I’m hungry and I’m eating." So he said, but there’s no light. How do you eat? He said, "Arjuna, it’s a practice." You know, the hand doesn’t go anywhere other than just here. Even dark, even with closed eyes, it will go here. Practice, and Arjuna got a lesson. Practice. So even if it was a dark night, he could shoot his arrow, and it would go exactly there. So it’s written, Kāunteya, Abhyāsa, Abhyāsa Kāunteya, O son of Kuntī, practice, practice, practice. But finally, what happened with his old practice? Similarly, the body culture, the body fitness, and all, whatever you call this, it’s just your ego to get satisfied, your ego. Spirituality, no one can defeat. And in spirituality is humbleness. Not fight, no competition. Where there is competition, though it is only a game, you are still against others. The birth-blind saint Sūradāsa, he said he was so spiritual, even Kṛṣṇa used to come and sit and listen to his bhajan. Kṛṣṇa was long ago, he passed away, but still he could have come. Mahāprabhujī can come and sit beside you or walk with you; you must send him a proper invitation, and on the way the invitation is stolen, it doesn’t come to him. So prayer is the best that you can reach him, Mahādev Purījī or Mahāprabhujī or Holy Gurujī. But you pray with closed eyes, Mahāprabhujī is standing there, he said. What I am doing here, the people can remove the whole altar, and even you don’t know you are praying. And instead of the altar, someone brought the donkey standing there, and then you make praṇām, open eyes. Then don’t you say, "Make like this." Therefore, with open eyes, it is said, what is the tradition of loving? Or what kind of loving? Or what is your way of loving? That God is awakened and you are sleeping. What is that way of loving? God is awakened, and you are sleeping. And you said, "God, I love you." Therefore, spirituality is awakening in the inner self. Sport is good, very good, and now in this yuga, sport is one of the favorite things. Now, the football champions. And from which country, who is playing? I think about 80% or 70% of people are looking. And when we have this one game they call cricket, on every mobile it is there. The driver is driving and looking, and the football also. And when one kicks the ball in the goal, the driver says, "Goal!" And the bus goes in the hole. The bus goes in the hole because he says it’s a goal. Anyhow, therefore, awareness is good. But this sport championship is good in this life; in the other life, it is finished. What will go with us? Our spiritual work. So it is said, who is here, who has everything here, but nothing there. Greedy ones, who only work for material things, he or she has everything here, but in the next life, nothing. And second, who has here nothing and there nothing, is that poor? Those thieves are hunters at that time. They have nothing here, and there is also nothing. Sinners. What a sport! They are shooting poor birds, which are emigrating from one country or from one side to the other side, one continent or another continent, because of the climate. And in summer they come back, hear the birds. And on the way, people shoot them, and that they call sport. It’s not acceptable. You see, Hungary was one of the famous countries where every chimney of the house, these birds were sitting—what do you call them? Storks. Now, 95% don’t come because they were killed on the way, and this is accepted as a sport. Not only the birds, but also killing humans has become a sport, as in war. And second, who has here everything and there also everything. Here you have everything. You work hard, honestly, this business, anything, and also you are supporting the NGOs or humanitarian work or donation, whatever you call. That you will get there, but don’t count that I was giving. But you gave? You have no right to ask back or mention that you gave. Otherwise, you will lose. And if you ask back, you will lose double—everything: physical, mental, emotional. Many things you will lose. And it is said, one has here nothing, but that everything, there everything. These are some great people. They give everything: donation, helping all, and one’s self has nearly nothing. Because there in heaven, they will get a kingdom. So these are the ancient experiences and words of those wise people. Kabīr Dās said a bird took water from, pulled up its beak, the water away from the river. But the river didn’t lose anything. Similarly, if you give something to the needy, it’s great. So, energy, our Prāṇamaya Kośa is now suffering very much. And this prāṇa is in nourishment, also in vegetables, fruits, grains, milk, etc. Manomaya Kośa, the mental condition. You know, long ago, let’s say a few decades ago, or the beginning of the last century, people had to search: is there some hospital for psychiatric treatment? And even people did not know what a psychologist is. And now nearly every village has a psychologist and nearby hospitals for psychiatric treatment. So at that time, fewer people had psychic problems than now. Now, little children, young children have psychic problems. This comes from the food. Even if you are vegetarian, still we are not safe. All this milk and this and that. So, the mental body, our mental strength, the mind is a mighty one. Our body, mind, mental energy, but that mind also became little. One day it’s gone. Then comes the Vijñānamaya Kośa, our intellect, our jñāna, our knowledge. And then finally, Ānandamaya Kośa. This is our causal body. The Ānandamaya Kośa is a body of the desires, longings, ambitions, etc. These three, these four, five kośas are still connected to the Maṇipūra Cakra. Instead of giving some tablets for psychic cases, work on the Maṇipūra. That will give you the strength. The medicine which we take for a psychic case is just to calm you down, to sleep, to let pass the time. I asked one day, one psychiatric doctor, "What do you mean, doctor? Let pass the time? How long is that?" Not very long, till death. Wait and see, let the time pass, it will die. So, no one is here to be blamed. We all are humans. If we change all at once, Satyuga is here. But we are not able to change even our children. How can you change others? You know your situation at home. You know what your daughter is doing, and you know what your son is doing. And when you tell something, they tell you. I see my Austrian disciples, their children are mostly doing this. Maybe I’m living in Austria, so I see more Austrians. Because they didn’t get the education outside. Parents try very hard. But it has to be for children, and must have some surrounding atmosphere. Anyhow, my dear, the Maṇipūra Chakra is powerful, and it controls all our five kośas, our five bodies. Generally, we say only three bodies: physical, mental, and subtle body. But when you go step by step, then we have five bodies. So practice all exercises which have a good effect on the Maṇipūra Chakra, the solar plexus. So today, for this weekend, there will be webcast satsaṅgs, but the subject will begin again on Saturday: Maṇipūra. So, bless you, and if you have written questions, please pass them here. Someone should collect. So there is one very nice question that came. Beautiful, spotless heart, white heart. So, no more question? Clear heart. But when the doubts come, or uncleanliness comes, then this heart has something on it. Anyhow, dear Gurudev, which action is our free will? In some incidents, thank you. Some in which that is not good. You have free will in everything. We have free choice in every action, but you should overthink if you should do or not, so action is free. But reaction is not free, or giving the fruits of the action is not in your hands. So, good action has good fruits, bad actions have bad fruits. It is known by many people as black magic, many people known as the criticizer. So, in the world, always people say... Swamiji, be careful. This person is a blackmailer, so the world has enough blackmailers. There is one film, a very old film. Maybe a kind of history. And that film, thanks to God, they saw only after 10 or 11 at night. It’s not good for children. And I like to see that, and that’s called a vampire. Dracula. It’s very interesting how it’s made. And from where it comes, you can go there even now, and in the evening, a sightseeing guide, because it’s underground. In reality, their people were very sensitive to the sun, that’s all. So they were always going in the shadow. And not long ago, in that country, in that part of that country, you had to pay tax if you sat in the sun. And you have to pay the tax if you take the sunlight through the windows. So they have to close the thick curtains. And you couldn’t walk through the street in the sun. Now you will say, Swamiji, we believe you a lot, but this is too much. But I can tell you, I was told it is true. Does someone know this, where it is? Which island? Scotland. And when you go to Edinburgh, even in some houses, you still see the wooden plate on the windows nailed. But now you don’t have to pay tax. People are very good, government is very good, everything is beautiful. So even the vampires are very kind. Daytime, you meet them, and they are hugging you. But when they hug, don’t bring your neck near. So the one vampire dies. Before he dies, he hugs someone and he bites. So he said, "My blood is already flowing in your veins." Similarly, the vampires died, but their blood is flowing in certain, what we call nowadays, black mirrors. And they don’t come into the light indirectly, because black mirrors never come directly. Indirectly, in a crowd, they will walk with you and just tell you, "Be careful of this, be careful of that." That’s all. "Be careful with this person," short and bitter. Not short and sweet. Similarly, this is a habit. These people are mentally ill, not their soul, but all around the soul is ill. And mostly, they died with suffering, or they die and go in darkness. But they leave their stamp behind. Forever, you are on the black list. So you are in black list on the further. Therefore, we are free to do any action, but we don’t have freedom to have the fruits as we desire. There is no negotiation, so any action you decide to do, you are free. You are grown. There is a poison. So you should decide if you should eat or not. So it is said, "Do your action, fruits give God." This is the teaching of the Bhagavad Gītā. Praṇām Gurudev. How to purify karmic relationships, and how to know they are purified. Put them in ICU. ICU, you know. Intensive care in the hospital, and invite Dr. Vera. She will disinfect everything. So karmic relations, karmic—this is a hard time to take out of the body, because it is a mixed dwelling in your system. But there is a constantly filtering system. Your computer says it urgently must update. So, computers are filtering and updating everything. So that’s called mantra. Repeat, repeat, mantra, mantra, let it constantly, that will purify these karmic spots through certain relations. But take care that you are not, at the same time, putting another karmic thing there. There was a children’s video, you know. I learned my little bit of German, but I speak through little, looking at the children’s program on television, and still I didn’t understand. So one day I decided to make a driving license, long ago in ’77, ’78. So Matajī, with whom I was living, Katerina, she died unfortunately. She said, "If you learn, then you have to learn German." I said, "I will learn in English." So I went to the driving school, and I asked an English teacher. An English teacher was someone from England who was speaking completely English dialect. I didn’t understand one single word. I came home and said, "Matajī, I want a German driver." She doesn’t learn. So that’s how I was learning. I was greedy to learn driving, so I learned German. So for me, it’s good that I learned German. Beautiful language, very good language. Then you see how nice people are. When you know the language, you come to know how beautiful, how great, and how nice Austrians are. Especially in Vienna, because they are close to Hungary and Croatia and this. Means they have good experiences. Good people, Austrians are very good, all are good. So what I wanted to tell, yes, so don’t create again that same karma. So that time there was a film video, children’s video, it’s called "Roja Rota Panta." Someone was making white, and he came to print another. Okay, thank you, dear Swamiji. If we make Agni Sāṅkriyā, and now the first thing in the morning, when is it good? Yes, morning before breakfast and anything, before your coffee and tea. No, before, don’t drink water. After, wait ten minutes, and then you can drink water, coffee, vodka, anything. Yes, this is a very good letter, which is nicely written. It’s about Kriyā. And it’s a question from Madhurī. So, you continue now again your Kriyā according to Cakrabhuk. How long should we practice on a certain cakra? Lifelong? So, when we practice, it’s like now you are doing in Kriyānusthān, and there is one technique called Cakraśodanam. This is one of the hardest fights for all of us Kriyānusthān people. Others are only for 10 minutes, 20 minutes, half an hour maximum. So they can change their posture. The Cakra-śodhana Kriyā, at least one and a half hour. And this is a challenge for many. Sometimes they ask Swamiji, "Is it necessary to have this technique there?" Anyhow, Cakra-śodhana, where you are practicing your particular mantras on each cakra, then going up and up and up. So yes, every day we should try to meditate on the chakras. Three chakras are very important: Maṇipūra, Anāhata, and Ājñā. And this we have when we chant Aum after and before meditation, when we practice our mantra, and when we pray. Our heart chakra is purifying. And when we work in the office or anywhere, or you drive, then don’t concentrate on Maṇipūra or Anāhata. You concentrate on Agnya Chakra, yeah? So, work honestly. Work for your company. Your company is paying you money, and your duty is to work for them well. So we should be honest to our company, our work giver, or at home, wherever. So we shall use positive willpower to work. Not always. Oh, I’m working; the company will pay me. Even if two minutes take a long time to drink a coffee, it is not like this. When you work in some company or somewhere, you should know it is yours. You take the individual interest in it, personal interest, I mean. Then it’s good for the company, good for you, and you have a good feeling in the heart. Two years ago, I had... years ago, this was an operation, yes, you can. Do Agnisāra slowly. It’s okay, not Naulikriyā still, but Agnisāra you can do it. I thank you. I wish you all the best. Very nice Friday afternoon. Eating, and who is going today before the evening? Then, I wish you all the best. So now we have to repeat all at once. The one-week program we have to finish now. It means the whole week, hardly we congratulate anyone for birthdays. Some were already congratulated. So, who had a birthday from last Saturday till tomorrow, Saturday? Please come here, and we would like to wish you a happy birthday on behalf of all our participants and our friends who... With the webcast on the name of the all, we would like to thank our technical team. It was great and very good, so they will also get chocolate. Thank you. So, first, birthday people, and the webcast will be in the evening again, about 8 o’clock. 8, 8.
