Help Without Selfishness

Service arises from selfless action and faces inherent opposition.

Spiritual work manifests as environmental stewardship, education, and interfaith dialogue. This service is performed by volunteers without expectation of payment. Opposition from negative forces is constant, attempting to destroy good works. Such destructive tendencies exist within the collective mind. The story of Viśvāmitra's yajña illustrates that positive resolve must be guarded against impurity and attack without yielding to anger. One's own negative karma returns as a curse. Therefore, persist in good works while understanding limitations. Renunciation and love are returned manifold by the divine. All possessions are transient gifts.

"Fruits will give the fruits of your karmas; God will give."

"Arjuna, why are you crying? ... It was someone’s yesterday, and you got it. Don’t believe that you will have this forever."

Filming locations: Vapi, Gujarat, India.

Well, someone asks spontaneously, and then one hesitates. So, Kamalā was doing great seva. She learned a lot, especially the Australian dialect of English. They don’t understand our dialect, but they are beautiful people, good people. And as the Akhāṛā said, yoga is there like a fashion. If you don’t practice yoga, what? But these are more like a fashion. And in yoga and their life, they found some kind of knowledge, but they were searching. That spirituality is without duality. You believe in any religion, and every religion has the same principles. So, yoga and daily life are a spiritual system, as well as physical, social, etc. And you know that we have many organizations within yoga and daily life. We have protection and care for the lost animals and wildlife. We have plantations of trees, the forest. In Australia, South Australia, what we call Adelaide, with the help of the Premier of South Australia about one decade ago, we began, and we planted millions of trees, not hundreds of thousands, but millions. I was there, and we planted a peace tree, and he wanted to name the park after me. But I said, "Well, this is very nice of you, but maybe all people are not pro-Swāmījī, so we shall give it a spiritual forest, a spiritual park, a very sacred place." There is a sacred park, and there is a peace tree standing where I met the Archbishop, all the different churches, spiritual people from different religions, and the native aborigines of Australia. By the next visit, next year, I asked him, "Why don’t you plant 5,000 trees?" Then he said, "5,000?" I said, "Yes. Let’s turn Adelaide green." So, he said, "Okay, but how?" So, we distributed the seeds in every household, like you distribute in newspapers—little pockets with different kinds of seeds. They grow in their own little pot, from milk or the yogurt or this little pot. They grow into small trees, and you can put them anywhere in the forest. So in one year, it was one and a half million. On my other visit, he said proudly, "Swāmījī, we have one and a half million trees." I said, one and a half is not a good number. Five million. And when I went next time, he said, "Swāmījī, it’s already eight million." I said, very good. Eight is very good, but I think number 11 is good. So, really, he tried, and we, all our yoga people, planted 11 million trees. Standing there, they wanted to give the name of the forest in my name. I said no. Let’s be a spiritual forest. But I said, it would be good without counting how many millions you have to do. He said, "Swāmījī, you give me a hard life, a hard time." I said, "Hard but good, beautiful." Meanwhile, his government changed and he couldn’t fulfill. I said, "No, no... you continue." There was a conference at the United Nations on environment and sustainability, so there were all the government delegations there. And they chose him as a director of international forestry, environment, the forest, and trees. Now, he says, "Swāmījī, now I have the opportunity to plant numberless, millions of trees." So, in Australia, we worked a lot. We worked in Australia, and peace trees everywhere, and of course in India and Europe, and even we had a peace tree in Rio de Janeiro, in the grounds of the United Nations building, a peace tree. And we have many, many animals. We protect them. In the rural area, the poor families, for the last 25 years, we have been supporting them. It means to give them work, labor, work. So, thousands of families got jobs or laboring work. We built an ashram, so we also bought the stones. Constantly, 500 workers are working in the mines to get stones for us. Many trucks were occupied to transfer this from about 700 kilometers away. And since 1992, between 1,500 and 300 people have been working daily. Also, our Jñānaputra, thousands of poor children got education, and still they are getting. And world peace dialogues, so yoga and their life. And for the multi-religions, or what you call the inter-religious dialogues, inter-cultural dialogues, it is not easy to bring peace. We have a big conference about peace and about harmony and mutual understanding among multiple religions. So there are many, many dignitaries around the world, governmental and NGOs, and we are sitting there, about 1,500 people, in the big hall of the United Nations, or the World Religious Parliament, and outside, negative people are putting up big banners: "Do not believe others; only this is God. Do not believe these people." So, there are always negative people. They are destructive; they are mentally ill. They need serious treatment—schizophrenic, paranoic. So they are, in the whole world. We plant a peace tree, and the next day the peace tree disappears. So when the Croatian newspaper came, the peace tree was stolen in front of the city council. And then, after that, the newspaper came, and they found the peace tree in another park. So again, it came big in the newspaper: the peace tree walked to the other park. Because the mayor of the city said we should put it in a better place. So things happen. Therefore Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa said, Bhagavān, go ahead, carry on, do your good work. Fruits will give the fruits of your karmas; God will give. So our negative karma is a sin. And where the sin is a curse, it comes automatically. No one is there to curse you. It is we, it is you who are cursing yourself. So we have many, many children, and how happy they are. A very little example: I was at Mumbai airport, and some young man came with a tie and like this, and he came and made a praṇām. And I said, "Bless you, how are you?" He said, "You didn’t recognize me, Swāmījī?" I said, is this some face, how do you call it, familiar? He said, "I am your Jñānaputra, and now I am a director at the airport. Thank you for your help, Swāmījī. I am here today." A person from a small village where there are 27 houses, there was no electricity at that time, no water, even now no water, no road. Our buses used to go and bring them. Now, all this work of yoga in their life is not mine, it is yours. You all, my dear ones, the credit goes to you. You were supporting them, and you are supporting them still. I am only a worker, and I work for this earth, something good. And you can’t do good to all. That’s it. Always, there is something ill-minded. So, thank you Tyāgpūrī, nicely spoken. Also, our dear Gītā, Kamalā, and so on. So we say, "Look within us." We say, "Look at what we are doing, what we did, what you achieved, what it helped you dissolve." That’s very important. Otherwise, and he said that you can wash the crow with the best shampoo; he will not become white. So there are black souls, what we call. So, they are like this. Well, our practice for the last 14 days was great. And all our teachers of yoga in daily life, who were guiding our spiritual kriyānusthāna, our friends who were taking care of little children, and for the first course for the beginners and seniors, as well as our organizers and volunteers, it is beautiful. You know, our yoga in daily life is a volunteer of things, and it is so that it is visible what we are doing. So all people who are here, mostly they are all doing it for free. No one asks, "Can I have payment?" No one ever asked. Someone sometimes lets their car run here and there the whole day. Again, Kṛṣṇānand? Janapad Kivana? Eh? Līlā Devī from Hungary. She is behind you. Okay. So, sometimes we try to fill the petrol tank of their car. So everything is used for good things. No one is taking for their own self. This is the beauty of life. But we should do what we can. We should not overdo. So we should know our limitations. Volunteering or supporting means not only material. We can also support mentally, intellectually, and spiritually with good thoughts, social support, and emotional support. There are many, many ways to help. But when selfishness comes, laziness comes, then we are looking for our own benefit. That is not good. Always tyāga, renunciation. As much as we renounce, more than double God gives back. And as much as we love, God gives us more than this. So, it is in who you are that you can give. From where did you get that which you give? It was not yours. God gave us. So Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa said in the Bhagavad Gītā, "Arjuna, why are you crying? But you have it now. It was someone’s yesterday, and you got it. Don’t believe that you will have this forever. It will be someone’s tomorrow. So what have you lost and what have you gained?" So God gives us good thoughts, good energy, good visions, and positivity so we can do. And of course we are not perfect; God is perfect. So we are thankful to God, if we believe in God, or our destiny, or our ancestors. You believe something, and if you don’t believe in anything, then at least you believe that you don’t believe, and that is something also. And with that, you are doing good things. What we call atheist people—I would not say that atheist people are bad. They have such a love; they are always ready to help you. They don’t believe what we like to believe, so who are we to judge them? You don’t know the reality of their heart. You don’t know the reality of their inner love. You don’t know, I don’t know. How can we judge them? Therefore, we can only say one thing. God, give them good thoughts. So there is one mantra: Śubhaṃ karoti kalyāṇam. O Lord, give us happiness, prosperity, and well-being. And bless us with mokṣa. Lord, bless us with good health, prosperity, and harmony in the family, in society, and in nature, and destroy the negative thoughts of our enemies. Or, O Lord, if I have some negative thought, please destroy these negative thoughts. Satru Budhi Vināśāya Dīpa Jyotir Namastute. I adore and bow down to that divine light of God. Sarve bhavantu sukhinaḥ, sarve santu nirāmayāḥ, sarve bhadrāṇi paśyantu, mā kaścid duḥkha bhāgbhavet. All should be happy. All should be healthy. The whole world should be in peace, and, Lord, may I also be happy. So these are the mantras from the Vedas, from great saints, great ṛṣis. The ṛṣis were the well-wishers of the world. But there is one story in the Rāmāyaṇa, and definitely you have seen the Rāmāyaṇa video. If you have watched the video or you have read the Rāmāyaṇa holy book, if not, then you should read it. It’s beautiful. It is God who leads family life to show the family how to live, how to love your brothers and sisters, and how much you can renounce for them, many, many times. Mahāprabhujīp Karatā He Kevalam Mahāprabhujīp Karatā He Kevalam... 2,000 or 64,000 years of tapasyā, and we are doing only for one week and sitting, kriyānusthāna. Oh God, Gurudev, Gurudev, ... quickly. Mahāprabhujī, quickly. Only one week, what do you expect from this? For them, one week was just so many thousand years, and some ṛṣis are still sitting in the Himalayas. Above them are many glaciers. Yes, my dear, it’s not a fairy tale, it’s true. You go up six to seven thousand meters in height, in the glaciers. Great peace. The sound of the universe. The stars are singing. The wind is whispering. Snow is falling. Glaciers. They are immortal in a mortal body. They don’t need anything, no eating, no drinking. Everything is organized by the Divine Self. Of course, they don’t have a big stomach like this. They don’t have cosmetics. They are very simple, but higher, I think. Great, great. So, Viśvāmitra wanted to perform a yajña for peace. So restlessness and wars were in the beginning already. Always, asuras were the destructive energies. And many times the good ones were suffering because of the Rākṣasas. So Viśvāmitra was doing yajña, fire ceremony with other ṛṣis and his disciples. And what were the Rākṣasas doing? They came flying. And they brought the dead bodies of the animals and the blood of the animals, and they threw them into the yajña. They made yajña impure. And the saṅkalpa of that ṛṣi, Viśvāmitra, was that the nature of this yajña is that one should not become angry. If you become angry, you will not be successful. You are not going home still, yes, Martin? Okay. So, that was the aim of the Rākṣasas, the Asuras. We wait for him to become angry. Then his yajña will not be successful. And when he is not successful, we will take over. And if he is successful, he will take over us. So, for good work, Rākṣasas are so clever. In the night they used to come; in the daytime, they fear. Viśvāmitra did not know what to do. Viśvāmitra said, "If I want, I can grill them in the sky through my tapasyā, but my problem is this: I made a saṅkalpa that I will not be angry. Because for the sake of dharma, I want to have success in this yajña." So when you have a positive thought, a positive saṅkalpa, then the negative tries to destroy it. But it is said, you can throw the dust as much as you like; the sun will always be bright. And that dust will fall on you again as a curse, as a sin on your head. Therefore, be careful. Rākṣasas did not believe this. Well, these two princes of Ayodhyā, the king Daśaratha had four sons, and two of them were Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa. They were all in the school. Viśvāmitra knew that Rāma is the incarnation of Viṣṇu. Yes, he was the incarnation of God, but still very young—17 years, 18 years. After the Gurukul finished, they came home. And the very next day, Viśvāmitra is coming to the palace of Daśaratha. And the king was so happy. It is a fortunate, it is a blessing if one saint comes to your house or to your door. So Daśaratha made a very warm welcoming. He was at the feet of Viśvāmitra. I made pūjā, āratī, tilak, everything, and gave him a high seat to sit, and with folded hands asked, "But a great blessing for me is that you bless my palace, but I could have come in your seva if you had just remembered me. Why are you still here? When will I purify this sin due to me? You have to take the trouble to come here. Ask me what you want. I am ready to give you all." Viśvāmitra said, "I don’t need anything. I ask your both sons, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, to come and guard our yajña for a few days. That’s what I said. Be merciful to me." "These are my kids; they just came back from college. Even I didn’t see them properly. And they are young kids, what will they protect you from?" He said, "King, I know, and you don’t know. And I came here, and I don’t want to go empty-handed. If I go empty-handed, then it’s bad luck for you, not for me." Daśaratha said, "I send you all my army. Even I will come. But let these two children here." He said, "All are me, and all are nothing. Only Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa. I go. Don’t send them." Daśaratha ran behind. Said, please. So Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa are walking behind Viśvāmitra. They arrived in the forest somewhere. Where was the yajña performed? So they were making pūjā, yajña evening, and Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa were guarding like bodyguards with their bow and arrow. It was night, 10 o’clock, 11 o’clock, and a big noise came, laughing like a drunken person. They brought the dead bodies of the animals, and Rāma saw this only. With one arrow, 20-30 rākṣasas were finished. Again they come, 20-30 finished. He saw such a good, nice video; children like it very much. So, he killed all the devils, and the yajña was successful. Then Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa and Viśvāmitra, they went through the forest, and the story is beautiful, a long story. So when Viśvāmitra came to his hut and he was resting, God Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa were massaging his feet. Bhagavān Viṣṇu, Rāma, incarnation of that Viṣṇu, doing Guru Seva. You have the pictures in the Rāmāyaṇa. So, destructive thoughts are always there. You don’t know how many destructive thoughts are dormant under consciousness. Even in me, too. But I eat enough chili. So they can’t come up. My apāna and prāṇa are twisting. But it can be in me also, can be in you; who knows how it will act. Therefore, the great saints gave the spiritual injections to mankind. All humankind received spiritual injections. Through that, spiritual vṛttis come up and negative vṛttis go dormant. Therefore, we have to always come to satsaṅg and think positively. My dear, we don’t know who will be the first to go away from this world. It doesn’t depend on age. Don’t think that you are young; still, you have a long life. Patā nahī, palakā bāt kartā hai kalkā. We don’t know what will happen in a second, and we are talking about tomorrow. Therefore, always be ready. Always be alert. And protect from negative gush-ups and blackmailings. Therefore, Mahāprabhujī said to the bhaktas, Oṁ Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān, Kī Jai, Śrī Devaśvara, Mahādeva, Kī Jai. One week is the Guru Pūrṇimā. So this is already what we call the time of the Guru Pūrṇimā. On the 12th of July, there will be a live program from Jadan, if the internet allows. Otherwise, they will try to record and send it. I will think of you all very much, and if the webcast is functioning, I will give a message in English, and we will have a Guru Pūrṇimā celebration today here in Vapi. It begins at 7 o’clock in the afternoon, so those brothers and sisters who are near somewhere to this place, from other countries, are welcome. And I wish you a happy Guru Pūrṇimā. You know, in December, after the 5th of December, we begin to celebrate Christmas. Many companies have already, I’m saying, wished them Merry Christmas, so it is already two weeks, three weeks ahead. So, all, we will have Guru Pūrṇimā this evening. Wish you all the best. I pray to the Almighty for your good health, all dear bhaktas here and there around the world.
