The great saints Anushuya and Dattatreya

The divine path is revealed through faith and the preservation of sacred culture.

Disciples arrive with various desires, yet knowledge alone is not perfection. The story of Anasūyā illustrates supreme faith. The gods Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva came to test her principle. Each was transformed into a child by her power, uniting as the single deity Dattātreya. This demonstrates the mother's divine śakti. Modern life has eroded the true culture that is the ornament of human life. Kali Yuga is marked by pride, while humility defines Satya Yuga. The duty is to develop spiritually and protect this culture for the world. Ancient saints learned from simple examples, such as a girl removing bangles to end noise, teaching the removal of duality. One must return to the wisdom of elders and the land, learning self-sufficiency and the sacred duty of family.

"Apply honey on the elbows. Can you lick honey from your elbow? It’s very near, not far. You can’t lick the honey."

"When there are two, it’s quarreling; when there is one, it’s only oneness. Therefore, remove the dualities."

Every disciple who comes to the Master has certain desires and wishes. Some come only for listening, to gain knowledge. Yet knowledge is endless. Even if you have completed all the holy scriptures and all the literature of the world, you are still not perfect, because there is always something new to learn. There is a story about Bhagavān Dattātreya. Bhagavān Dattātreya was the son of the Divine Mother Anasūyā, and that Anasūyā was the sister of our Bhagavān Kapila Muni. Kṛṣṇa said in the Bhagavad Gītā, "Siddhānāṁ Kapilo Muniḥ." Among the perfected Siddhas, I am Kapila Muni. There was no one greater among Siddhas than Kapila Muni in a physical human body, but inside was something great. What can be more than God? O Gurudev, at the end, if I see the face of God, what should I do with that which I never saw in my life? So what is God? God is in that human form as a great saint. Then we give the title of God, or incarnation. Kapila Muni is the author of the Sāṅkhya philosophy. There are six philosophies, and one is Sāṅkhya. There are many great miracles and stories of Bhagavān Kapila Muni. Kapila Muni is the Iṣṭa Devatā, the personal deity, of our Mahā Nirvāṇī Akhāṛā. As brother and sister, the brother was great, Kapila Muni. And you think the sister is not like that? She was more than him. You know, my dear, an apple will always give that apple, not a thorny cactus fruit. That is a quality. That is the tapasyā of the ṛṣis. They were all married, but when they wanted a child, they performed great pūjā, tapasyā, prayers, and purification, mental and physical. The ṛṣis are the foundation of humanity. They are the guides till now and in the future too. The great divine mother Anasūyā was residing on holy Mount Abu. Mount Abu was brought from the Himalayas; there is a long story written clearly in the Skanda Purāṇa. Read the Purāṇas. Those miracles and stories which the Purāṇas have now appear in the Bible. Sanātana Dharma is the essence of all dharmas. Sanskrit is the mother of many languages. The gods are always playing with us sometimes. They must also have happiness and joy. It must not be boring. That’s why in Hinduism we decorate our gods very nicely, with dressing, flowers, and makeup. We give the best to God. That’s why Hinduism is known as a religion of happiness. Anyhow, I’m not talking about religion, but it comes to the subject. So Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva decided to test Anasūyā: how faithful, honest, disciplined, and principled she was. One after the other, they tried to come. When Brahmā came as a man, Anasūyā looked at him and said, "Come, my child," made him like a newborn baby, and took him in her lap. Brahmājī then said to Viṣṇu, "You try." Viṣṇu, who likes to play his līlā, also came. She said, "Oh, my child, come," and made him a little baby too, both sitting on her lap. Viṣṇu said to Śiva, "Please come and liberate us; we are caught." Śivjī thought, "I will liberate them." Though they knew, when they do something purposely, they are caught and must fulfill their saṅkalpa. Śivjī came, and she said, "Oh, my child, you came too." All my three babies, small, fresh-born babies. That is the miracle, the līlā of the goddess. She united all three together: three faces, Śiva, Brahmā, and Viṣṇu, in one body with three heads. Now, this face can’t see Viṣṇu, or can’t see Śiva. Sometimes things are very peculiar. We call that, if you want to tell someone a joke and you believe it and try to get it, you can’t reach it. It’s with you, but you can’t reach it. So we say, "Apply honey on the elbows." Very sweet, very nice honey. Then please enjoy. Can you lick honey from your elbow? Try, anybody. It’s very near, not far. You can’t lick the honey. A dog is better than us. A goat is better than a horse; they can also lick their elbow. So, giving certain empty promises. All these three became one; this is called the trinity in one. That is Bhagavān Dattātreya: Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva. Bhagavān Dattātreya is the God, the personal deity, of our Juna Akhāṛā. Our Nirvāṇī Akhāḍā has Bhagavān Kapila Muni. Niranjanī Akhāṛā has Gaṇeśjī. It’s great. There, on Mount Abu, where Bhagavān Dattātreya and Anasūyā Jī resided, there is a temple. There is a cave, a fireplace, the dhūnī, where Dattātreya did his tapasyā. That place is called Guru Śikhā. Śikhā means the peak of the mountain. This is the highest place of the Gurudeva. Next time we go, we will go there, to mother Anasūyā. But you must go with very pure thinking, because I want to bring you back as you are. Don’t think, "Let’s try." That trial can be expensive. So, what do you think of the Śakti? Mātṛ Śakti, the mother power. We had so many thousands of great Śaktis, mothers, women. India is full of holy incarnations and saints. Hardly any village was left without a great saint. That’s why India is a holy land. Each and every dust of India has a holy vibration. Maybe it’s polluted now, but the vibration is there. This modern way of education, modern way of life, modern way of business, everything has destroyed the reality of that culture, whether in Europe, Africa, any other country, or India. We have forgotten that reality, the real beautiful culture which is the heart of humans, the jewelry, the ornament of human life. These modern things have destroyed it. It’s a great pity. Can you imagine how many ages it took to create these cultures, given according to the climate and land? But Kali Yuga must show its strength. Some say Kali Yuga is gone, now it’s nothing anymore. We don’t believe that, according to the Vedic counting. Some say Kali Yuga has just become young. You know who has ego? Proudness? That’s called Kali Yuga. Kali Yuga walks like that. I will see, where is he? That is Kali Yuga. The humble one will go like this. There is a difference between Kali Yuga and Satya Yuga, but you have a duty to develop. In the next life, you are born like ṛṣis to turn Kali Yuga into Satya Yuga. That’s fine. So next life, definitely, we will turn Kali Yuga into Satya Yuga. Therefore, develop personally very nicely, spiritually. Don’t remain behind. Go forward. When the saints are marching, you know. That’s it. So you are those saints now. We shall protect the culture of the whole world, all religions, our natures, cultures, everything. That’s why we are here. Bhagavān Dattātreya had many gurus. His main guru was Anasūyā, as a mother, as a guru. But Dattātreya said he even accepted a snake as his guru. When a snake is moving, it has many curves. But when a snake finds a hole, the curves are gone; it slides straight in. He said, "Oh, this is my guru." As long as you have ignorance, you are walking like that. But when you find a straight, clear way, you just go. Secondly, when Bhagavān Dattātreya went for bhikṣā—look, even God goes for alms, begging—he came to a small village with a few houses. He stood in front of a house and said, "Please give me food." There was a young girl, about 25 years old, preparing food. She was crushing rice, and she had rings or bracelets on her wrists—one, two, three, four, five—and she was working like this. At the same time, some people came to her house to talk. They asked the family, "Can we marry your daughter to our son?" and "Can you marry your son to our daughter?" They wanted to know the culture, traditions, everything about the home and family. At that time, people came for marriage proposals, but they also wanted to know their traditions and culture. Parents had no sorrows about education or money. But they had a sorrow: "My child should come to a good house, have a good husband or wife, live lifelong as one, have nice children, and educate them with human education." It is very wrong to put your small child as a caretaker, a house baby caretaker. It is a wrong system and education to send children to kindergarten. Send them to school when they are of that age. Otherwise, the child feels psychologically that the parents are pushing them away. This small child, one and a half years old or ten months old, and you give it to a baby caretaker. Now the child does not know who the mother is. Who are my parents? In the caretaker center, they also love children. But sometimes caretakers are not so nice; they just sleep. When they come, the child closes its eyes. When they hear, they are gone; they open their eyes and sit in the bed. But a mother will not do that. A mother has a different love. No matter how much you try to give, a mother is a mother. Therefore, in my opinion, this is a completely wrong concept, to give the child away. What do you expect after that? Why are you wondering that your children don’t listen to you? Children go where they want, sleep where they want. And the parent thinks, "Thank you, it’s gone." To give a child away, for parents and especially for the mother, is a pain. The first pain is when she gives birth, and the second pain you should feel is when you give the child to the caretaker. There is no difference. You put cows in a stall, take cows to the field. Cows all the time say, "Where is my baby?" Little cows call, "Ma, mother." We separate them. Similarly, now you are separating your children. You are human, not a cow or sheep. Look at the whole nature: the mother takes care of the babies in the nest. A man has a duty to work hard, bring money home, and give it all to his wife. Don’t ask her again what she has done with the money. She will take care of it. You don’t need a bank account; your bank account is your wife. If all men work hard and give all money to women, there will be no question of divorce. Your wife will never let you go out without pocket money, and she will buy the best things for you. This is the principle. At least the mother should be at home until the child is six or seven years old. Not because she’s a woman must she stay at home and cook; this is negative thinking now spreading. Some say, "Why not? The father stays at home and the mother goes to work." Yes, they can, but the father has no milk in the breast. He has to take the child to her workplace every hour: "Please give milk and come back." Then you are happy, and your family is happy. All the young generation are totally desperate, confused, not knowing where they belong or to whom they belong. Therefore, come to your old culture. Czechs have a very beautiful old culture. Slovakia also has beautiful old cultures. You can’t imagine: the whole family together with great love. The same in other countries and in India. Now, this culture is changed by education, a wrong conception that will make humans enemies. Therefore, when you want to get married, don’t marry only for physical love. This should be the last of the last. Marry that heart, that human who will treat you like a human, make you great spiritually, discuss the child, and both have a saṅkalpa to get a divine soul which should be a light in the world. It’s not easy sometimes because outer society is very… When your child, after two or three years, goes to kindergarten and comes back completely different, brainwashed. There was a discussion about the girl’s engagement. That girl was crushing grains. She came to know someone came talking about her wedding engagement. When there was engagement talk, the boy and girl had not seen each other. You live together for five years and then say, "Now we decide to marry." What are you marrying? Nothing left to marry. What a joke. The marriage is that day when you first give your hand and are first together. After that, it’s only a joke; don’t take it seriously. So many times you married, nothing left more. But are you going to marry more? This misconception has created conflict, problems, suffering, especially for children in this modern system. Why are you wondering? Why are you surprised? How many sitting here, if I ask, how many times were you disappointed? Maybe raise your hand, who was not disappointed? Maybe some elderly people about 60, 70, 80, 90? Anyhow, it’s an internet webcast throughout the world. So it’s good they are listening. That’s why I sent a message. Now, in Western culture, developed, your children are 11, 12, and want to go to a friend’s house and sleep there, and you know what they are doing? When they had a discussion about engagement, the children went out. It was between grandparents and parents. If they had great-grandparents, always the last word, yes or no, is from the great-grandparents. They all respect. Never do anything without asking the grandparents from both sides. Then your family was safe: a joint family, happy family. Well, when she was crushing the grains, these rings were making noise. She took one out. Still, it was moving, making noise. Zarbengal, she took the second one out. Still, there was noise. Then she took the other one out, only one left. Because she did not want to be uneducated, so her future parents-in-law would not say, "What an uneducated girl. We don’t want to marry her." When guests come, you tell your children, "Be nice. Sit straight. Hands on the table. Hold a fork in this hand, a knife in this hand. Wait, don’t begin to eat." If you don’t, others will say, "What a spoiled child." The wife will say, "I don’t want such a child." The guest will say, "Never in my house. I won’t like child." No social education. So when only one was left, there was no noise. Dattātreya said, "She is my guru." She saw me clearly: when there are two, it’s quarreling; when there is one, it’s only oneness. Therefore, remove the dualities. If dualities are a conflict… Vedānta means one, non-duality, Ātmā. This is the way the great saints were learning, giving examples, and they left this whole treasure for us: their science, their wisdom. They taught, preached this knowledge and wisdom with examples. So, don’t go to a psychologist who doesn’t know anything about the past. The best psychologists are your great-grandparents. Go to elderly people. If you don’t have grandparents or parents, go to your neighbors, the great elderly people. They will give you good suggestions. Some may not, but generally, all have life experiences and will tell you. We don’t ask them what we are doing. We don’t ask them what they see. Old people said, "We don’t understand anything anymore." So you like modern education because you want money. You want to be a slave. If you are a farmer, you are no one’s slave. Maybe you work in a multi-millionaire company, but still you are a slave. Buy a piece of land, grow your own potatoes, carrots, all root vegetables, and pumpkins. Store them in a cold place. During the whole winter, you have nice vegetarian food. Eat and be happy. A happy future for humans is to learn certain works. If you are a doctor, it doesn’t matter; you can work as a farmer. You should. Don’t say, "I’m a doctor, and I don’t know how to put potatoes in the earth so they will grow." Even now, children don’t know how a vegetable or a strawberry plant looks. Many people think meat is in the supermarket, that’s all. They don’t know how animals are killed. You have no experience. So learn certain talents. If you don’t want this job, you get another job. Use every square meter in your house or balcony to grow some edible things. The second step is to learn cooking. You don’t learn anything; you don’t need any language. Cooking language. What do we need? Head to mouth. When you take money from the bank, it doesn’t go in the mouth; it goes in the pocket. The wrong pocket—you can’t cook. Your life is 75% senseless. Cooking means cooking, not only boiling and putting salt on it and eating. If you cannot cook, I can’t promise I will visit you. Because you can’t cook, I will be hungry. So if you want to invite me, then don’t invite anyone for cooking. You cook yourself, then I will see how my stomach answers the next day. These ancient great saints were householders. Ṛṣi Patañjali, the ṛṣi’s wife, and children were ṛṣis. We are known as ṛṣi children, all humans. Our background is some great ṛṣis, so try to go into that spirituality. Otherwise, at the end of life, again, the soul will be angry with you. Again, you lost the chance. Now sport is very in: football, hockey, skiing. But you know, when they lost in football and another country won, the host country where they had the game was so sad. They were not so sad when their father or mother died. So is that. Your soul will say, "Again, nothing. You had it here completely empty. You must have a solid brain like a yogī." Spiritually, let’s this evening we will continue our talk. Therefore, every master and disciple had that confidence, that faith. That experience, I can tell you with a thousand percent certainty, that my Gurudev is great. Therefore, Holī Gurujī said, "Bhajore manvā Śrī Pūjī Dīp Dayāl." Oh my mind, repeat the name of Mahāprabhujī, because he is Parabrahma, he is Parabrahma Puruṣottam, great in human. "Kardeve najar nihal." If his kind look even for some second is on you, you will be liberated. Therefore, we look at that merciful look of Gurudeva. Mahāprabhujī is looking; he is not a statue, he is alive. If you don’t understand, then he is a statue. Otherwise, he’s alive. You can try sometimes. I’m sitting and having darśan in his mirror. Sometimes I ask something while talking, then Mahāprabhujī looks like this. And I say, "Why?" He’s looking that side. As he wills, so his divine blessing and grace are there. Śrī Pradhān, Śrī Pūjyadīp, Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān, Śrī Śrī Dev Puruṣa Mahādeva, Dharma Sambharat, Satguru Swāmī Madhavānandjī Bhagavān, Satya Sanātana Dharma, Om Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ.
