The Lamp of the Soul: A Child's Journey Home

A spiritual discourse on the soul's journey and the importance of upbringing, sparked by videos of children in the community.

"The soul is that which comes from God. That means the light of God gives life, gives life to be alive as a soul."

"Meditation is a key to pass through this gate and then to experience. The light is not like this material light. The light is completely different."

Swami Ji delivers an evening satsang, reflecting on videos of devotees' children. He discusses the soul's journey through lifetimes, the blessing of a human birth, and the critical role of parental love and upbringing in spiritual development. He shares personal stories of his Guru, emphasizes the need for a living Master to receive the inner light, and critiques modern distractions from a child's spiritual foundation. The talk concludes with a universal peace mantra.

May it bring auspiciousness, well-being, and wealth; may it destroy the intellect of enemies. I bow to the lamp of light. The lamp of light is the supreme Brahman. The lamp that enchants all is the lamp that is kindled. The lamp of the evening is the embodiment of all truth. Om Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ... Victory to Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān, victory to Śrī Śrī Dev Purīṣa Mahādeva, victory to Śrī Śrī Madhavānandajīva Gurudev, victory to Satya Sanātana Dharma. Good evening, a warm welcome. Today is a special day, a day for the children. Coincidentally, we have seen beautiful videos of our yoga children—our dear Manohar Alexander, from our dear Radha and from Ekta, Stefan, and all the other children. One can see and feel the love, devotion, and proper upbringing from the parents' side. It remains lifelong. It is a beautiful, loving upbringing. Life will help them in every situation to understand life, to understand health, and life itself. It is difficult for adults to choose a life goal so naturally with completely pure consciousness. That is why the parents are there. It is a beautiful story of the child, when the soul enters the mother’s body and the soul speaks to the mother. Immediately the mother recognizes that she has a blessing, a gift from higher realms, that a soul is just coming into human life. There are countless numbers, trillions upon trillions—8.4 million different species of living beings. We know that all species of living beings have a large family. Many, we do not know where they live or what they are like. There is a very small remark: one can see underground how many different ways the termites live, all over the world. How many are there? Also, how many kinds of ants and so on. There is much. And everyone has a soul. The soul is that which comes from God. That means the light of God gives life, gives life to be alive as a soul. The life in the soul is the light that the soul contains—the Lord, the Almighty God, as light in the universe. Through the light, the soul begins to have consciousness. Through consciousness, the soul begins its journey through the infinite universe, as said, through the waves of time. Let us make a path through the light and the darkness, with many experiences, difficulties, happiness, pain, and suffering. By the grace of God, the soul comes to our beautiful Earth, the planet. In astrology, among these nine planets, nothing is governed by the Earth. Because the Earth is alive. The Earth, we call her Mother Earth. And a mother never loses the seeds. Even the dust of this earth lives. Stone lives. We know nothing, but there is a beautiful divine light and vibration there. Every type of stone has a meaning. Many people, especially astrologers, say that you should wear these types of rings, a gemstone or semi-precious stones, and so on. But the Earth is the mother, and within her body there is only the light and the light of God. I remember once in 1967 at the Madhavad Āśrama, I was with Gurujī. I was a little bigger than Manohar, as we saw today in the video. I remember I was that slim too. His movement and speech brought my memory to the surface. Gurujī sat there, and I sat beside the earth under the Banyan tree. I held a small piece of wood in my hand and scratched the earth. Gurujī said, "What do you like?" I said, "No, nothing." He said, "You know, you are hurting Mother Earth. Unnecessary, you must not do anything." I said, "Yes, but this is an Earth, Gurujī." He said, "No." Then he told me what I am telling you. Why does Mother Earth exist? Because countless living beings live and nourish themselves; they are born and continue on. Here, the Earth is called the striving planet. And so, through many karmas, many vāsanās. Vāsanās means longing, desires, and ignorance. When the soul comes from the astral plane into a body, it has a goal: that I return to or unite with my origin. But they have no decision and no power. It is destiny. When one enters the aura of our Earth, destiny already begins there. Just as from the ocean, through the warmth, the vapor rises up. Now there is no personal choice to return. Immediately, it is already gone. Distance. How often have we felt a sense of belonging, only to somehow drift away due to our ignorance or some other reason. Now you cannot go back, and the other cannot come to you. That's gone. The river where you bathed is no longer there. What does the water know? The water has already gone far away. You cannot go back and find the same water again. Just like all the countless souls that have the longing to return to the origin. But how? It manifests as clouds and from clouds as rain. With rain again, one does not know where this water will fall—into the desert, a completely dry desert. And there we have a hope. This one drop, having fallen on the hot sand, holds the hope that one day it will return to its origin, namely the ocean. Yes, it will happen, but how long, how—that is in fate, in the stars. And so, it is a great blessing or grace or karma or destiny or whatever we may call it, by whose grace we have received this soul into a human body. Yes, now you have received something where you have a choice, and you can realize your goal. Therefore, there are many kinds of talent, many kinds of qualities, attributes, many, many. That is like a given instrument to work with. God always leaves a possibility open. What do you want? Once Gurujī told me—I was a bit, I don’t know why, but a master is a master—he told me, "Come here." I said, "Yes." I stood before him. He said, "What do you want? In my two hands, in one hand I have a beautiful Lāḍu, a sweet, and in the other hand I have a stick. So, what would you like? Lāḍu or stick?" I said, "Of course, Lāḍu." Then he put down his staff and said, "Okay, this belongs to you, but nothing now. It will be in time, in a few days. Let’s say until then it will rot, and the mice or the rats will eat it." He said, "The burden I have given you—no one can bear it themselves. But time is the cook; no termites have access to my stock." Well, I did not understand that, but of course, I was startled. Now we are sitting in the two āśramas. Outside, I do not want to run away from anything; I can say when I wanted to walk the path and where. That is to say, the Jīva in the soul experiences much, but both exist. Whether you lose your way or decide on another path, or you follow the path you receive later, Lāḍu. And when you follow the path you lose, this goal of the human, then you have this staff as Karma-Śikṣā. So, we have many talents. We have, as mentioned, the hidden powers within our body, where energy is stored, through the cakras, kuṇḍalinī, and many other things. Our body is nothing but a composite: Annamayakośa, Prāṇamayakośa, Manomayakośa, Vijñānamayakośa, Ānandamayakośa—these five sheaths of the self are. And inside is the soul. And in the soul is the light, the light of the Highest. That can only guide itself when you meditate. Meditation is a key to pass through this gate and then to experience. The light is not like this material light. The light is completely different. When Guru Mahāprabhujī spoke about the light, Candra-Sūrya, there is neither sun nor moon. But only with light; light cannot be compared to the moon or the sun, or this is our material light that we create. The light is something entirely different that comes through meditation. And meditation, that is a proper one, as the Master has given instructions. Too many concepts, imaginations, various images, instructions are given to the students. It leads to nothing or to confusion. In the end, aimless, still nothing. Therefore, it is said that one needs a living Master. Yesterday I spoke about a beautiful book by Sivananda, from Rishikesh. He also entered Samādhi, Mahāsamādhi. It has been 42 years now, 50. At the same time as Mahāprabhujī, he also entered Mahāsamādhi in 1963. Sivananda says, there are many candles lying here. Every candle has the ability to give light, but nothing is lit. With our hands, we cannot ignite anything. Do we need a matchstick or a candle that is burning? Antarati miramita satta gurujyotase jyotajagam. That is that. Satgurudev is the Light. Jyoti is the light. A flame. And we are all candles here. Not yet lit. Our Jīvātmā calls. Everyone sits in the Satsaṅga and watches. The inner self is so happy and calls out to Gurudev, "Please illuminate my heart. Pour the light into my heart, from your light. Color my consciousness, my inner self with the color—not red or yellow or green, but in the color of your color." And what is your color? Love. A master is sitting there and a disciple comes. The master says, "How are you?" and so on. The disciple asks the master, "It is beautiful to be with you and to sit beside you, and so on. But you have so many disciples and have done so much, it is beautiful." The Master says, "Yes, but you know, my body will not remain here for long." "Pardon?" He said, "Yes, that is the nature. Master or disciple, saint or God, cannot play evicted from this stage of the Earth forever. Everyone has their time and has played beautifully, leaving an impression behind." So the student asks the master, "Master, what will happen to everything you have built? Who will take on this responsibility and carry it forward?" The Master says only one word: "Love." And so it is, when there is love, then life will continue onward. And when love is lost, it’s over. But our Earth is love. This is here as well. Damn it, there is the harsh and the good. Love means devotion, surrender. Nothing with words, nothing with thoughts, nothing merely with feelings, but with actions. Lord, you have given me everything. What can I give you? Because it is all from you. Now I can only offer a piece, which you also gave me, but with folded hands, please accept it, my heart. Because the heart is a temple, a residence, the dwelling place of the soul and the light. The soul and the light operate throughout the entire body. About 15 years ago or so, it happened. It can happen; everyone is the body. I was in a hospital, and they performed an angiography on me. All of you know. I saw on the computer screen where the wire had gone in and everywhere. The beginning was also a bit sun-shy. The body is very kind to us. We love our body. We do not want to give up anything. Why? Because this is the only possibility. We have only the one chance that whatever we want to achieve or do is through this body. As I said, health is nothing. Everything is nothing without good health. But what will we do with health if there is no body? And so, I said, "What will happen now?" Well, everything went well, there was no pain, flawless. They then inserted special tubes, and the pump keeps pumping. I asked the doctor, "I saw nothing, have you seen my soul inside? In this angiography?" "Yes." So, they said, "What?" I said, "Yes, the soul." Because that is not a material thing that can be seen. You cannot see love with the eyes you have. But you can see love through your indriyas. But that is only a flash in the clouds. Once they did something. What did they do? Gurujī was here in Vienna and said, "And do you know, have you seen your kuṇḍalinī?" I said, "Gurujī, no." That was not there. It exists within us, but with these feelings, eyes, and this consciousness, we cannot perceive it. It is a different consciousness. And that is the consciousness of the Guru, the Master. Anyone can say, "I am a master, I know everything, I have read everything." Many of you have read the Bible. But when we go to church, to a mass, and a priest reads aloud there, it has a different effect. And such a blessing is indescribable. The words of the master, the realized master, the light burns. This is directly an enlightenment that we practice for a long, long time. Perhaps masters could immediately give us the light and we would all be enlightened. No. Why did Śiva do all this? He keeps us waiting for so long. Some say it is suffering. Without suffering, there is no choice. It doesn’t matter. It happens only once. Then we are lost. So, love means that now you have found your path and now you walk it, you lead it further, then the light comes by itself. The light of the Master. It is not about whether you are clever or beautiful or old or young, no, that is not at all the point. It waits. And so, when the child, the soul, enters the womb, immediately it is somehow an indescribable feeling. Perhaps she has dreams. I am not a mother; my body would be a child and cannot say how it came into being, or how it now shines inside, here or there, I do not know. From there, an education for the child begins. Whether it becomes spiritual or not depends on the mother. And it requires 100% attention with loving devotion. Complete surrender means being helpful. And so, when the child is born, it is a new world. Well, you know it, my dear. Your joy is present, but one joy has gone. For example, you have an ice cream in your hand, you want to eat it, but your little child takes it away and eats it. Yes, now your right one is gone. Yes, once you are married, your freedom is gone. When you have a child, your enjoyment of food is over. And when you have a grandchild, then it is time to become a Sanyāsī. This is the stage from one stage to the next stage. And when you have climbed three or four steps and are about to fall back, you quickly end up in the orthopedic hospital or somewhere else. I believe God has a soul in a human body. And who designed the human body? Truly, so that people do not lose themselves in the jungle of confusion and many, many desires—house, money, car, factory, company, this, that... all kinds of longings. This is again because these Sattva from the Māyā do not want all members, all creators, to diminish. Do you want more? Everyone wanted to have more. Do we all want that? Our money will increase. But unfortunately, more always goes out than comes in. That is the way it is. Therefore, the best upbringing comes from mother and father. Then comes the next stage, and it is very difficult. Now there is something new again, which was not there before, and now it is called kindergarten. In my personal opinion, kindergarten is not a good thing. A child always wants to be with one of the parents. The dearest is Mother, but it would be good if both are present. Father is not there, Mother is not there. And you entrust your child into someone else’s hands. Of course, there are the little children, playing and so on for a while. And now there is a new trend again, that before you have a child, you must arrange for a babysitter. And says, proudly, "I have my babysitter," you go to the cinema, theater, clubs, parties, because you have a babysitter. And then kindergarten. And then to school. The child knows nothing. Knows my parents. And therefore love is lost again. So, this is the third stage, the school. Then one grows as a child. Develops many other interests. And there it is a very important time to have a proper, good upbringing and good friends. So far, the university or so on is another danger, namely bad habits. Oleg Ursi said, it is easier to free oneself from an enemy, but it is very difficult to free oneself from a bad habit. It will torment you for a lifetime. Torturing. The bad habit will torment you your entire life. It is easy to get rid of the enemy, but difficult to overcome a bad habit. And that is a specific time when your child, whether they are 15, 20, or 30 years old. Until 30 years, it is said, your child is a child. Still shines the mother’s milk on the lips. Who is a happy child who has drunk mother's milk for one year or one and a half years, two years? And if not in three months only breast milk, then at least breast milk as good nourishment, that is it. That means, mother’s milk on your lips, when your lips shine beautifully, without lipstick. Who has ever told me, do you know how many kilos of lipstick women or girls swallow per year? Some always have it like this. It happens with the coffee, with this, that, that, that. And innocent men, they also have to swallow it. But the radiance of the Mother’s energy, it is indescribable. It will radiate a whole life, a whole life. And thus good upbringing, good profession. And then the two things come, both. Svārtha and Parārtha. Svārtha means something for us, for our existence. And Parārtha does something for others, for all living beings, for humans, humanitarians, veterinarians, and for the wild, wildlife, birds, etc. One understands human beings. And therefore, you should nourish them. Love them, feed them, don't eat them. If you have done everything with love and then kill and eat them afterwards, then it is not love. If we have a cat, if we have a dog, we feel sad when the dog is ill. We go to the doctor, we pay for everything. And the doctor might say, "He is very ill, should we give him an injection and let him fall asleep." My God, I do not want that. I am taking a vacation; I am staying at home. But all living beings are like that. That is where Ahiṃsā and consciousness begin. It is said that if a wildcat tastes human blood once, it will eventually attack again. And so it is, when one eats the flesh of a dead animal, and it exists in flesh beings, there is a subconscious, a taste of the food. This is not food, but it is flesh, dead flesh. Therefore, constantly observe your Indriyas, the Karmendriyas, the Jñānendriyas, and follow your path. The four days are the moonlit nights, then it is dark nights again. Two days before the full moon and two days after the full moon. Then it becomes dark again and dark and dark. Life is precious. We cannot buy this, cannot borrow a body from someone, nor can we love our body to someone else. To understand the light, the light of the Master, and how he transmitted it, you don’t feel anything at all. I often give an example of someone who cannot drive a car at all. In ten days, he can learn from the driving school, the driving instructor, and now you can drive a car. He has given you the light of knowledge. Tamaso mā jyotir gamaya—lead us from darkness to light. But only those who understand can. One should reach the point where one can understand. And so, the future is in our hands. What does that mean? Our youth and children. And so it is, as Gandhijī said, "Be the change you want to see." Just as we wish to see the future, now we work for it. But many will understand nothing and will not be able to. But those who have understood, then accept everything. All difficulties. And it passes through. Then success is there. Then it is true meditation. This is a beautiful topic and those were wonderful videos. Look how the little children can give us so much knowledge. For me, today was a great lesson. That has awakened many, many memories in me. These children are adults in my hands, born in my hands. And today they have become father and mother. I am also a grandfather. And in some cases, I am a great-grandfather. Grandfather, Grandfather. What does that mean? My students, children, and the children of their children—I have already seen five generations of my students. But still, I am always young, just look. And someone said, "You cut your hair, you look 15 years younger." So I said, "I will indeed cut, and thus I will be 30 years younger." So, it is beautiful that one learns and knows everything in Satsaṅga. So, Sivananda said, we make use of, it is the light of the masters. But do not think that you are the master. There must be a proper physical presence, a master, who gives us the light. So, with that I wish you all the very best and much love. Śrāvaṇa is Śrāvaṇa. When I came today, I thought I would speak about āsanas. Then I came in and said, I will speak about the beautiful autumn, what Mother Nature can give. Then I came here, and the children completely disrupted my entire plan. It is so, esamera sadguru andarbole—thus speaks the Gurudev, what he speaks. I am merely an instrument. I wish you all the best, all the love. Tomorrow, I believe, we have kīrtana in Bratislava. If there are too many, then we will sit there, provided it does not rain. The hall is large, but when not, it feels like a parking lot. There is a children's playground. There you go, we play as children. When someone comes, we will say, we are children of God. So, in this spirit, all love, all the best. And for a long, long time, I have not given any lecture in the German language. Otherwise, it would be said that I am sweating. My God, I am... So, think, think. It is a beautiful story. Yes, please sit down. May I bring a chair for you? So. It is a long-standing story. And someone, I believe, found it. It was a bull. His name was Senjo. He was homesick. Senjo is homesick. That was the title of this film. A bull who had so much homesickness. And so he came again and again. He traveled a lot, but he always kept his goal before his eyes. If an animal cannot forget its goal, how can we forget or neglect our goal? For example, a cat. You can bring your cat to Bratislava tomorrow and let it out on the other side of Bratislava. In a few days she comes home and says, "Yes, I am here." That is the attraction. Whoever has awakened inwardly, the nose always leads there. The nose represents Iḍā, Piṅgalā, and Suṣumnā. But the Vajranāḍī must be strong. If the Vajranāḍī is not strong, then you will feel tingling. Then you want to, but you cannot. A bird wants to fly, but someone has cut off both wings or the feathers. And so our weakness, our emissions, make us weaker and weaker. Then there are other beautiful faces. I don’t know exactly how it works here; I will explain it in the next session. They are beautiful faces, and there is a bit of magic within them. Yes, it’s like a long face; perhaps we will share it in the summer. The face itself, if I were to describe it, would take about an hour and a half or so; it is very dramatic. So, I will save that for you, for the next time, for today. All the best, all love, and we conclude with our mantra. Tryambakaṃ yajāmahe sugandhiṃ puṣṭivardhanam Urvārukamiva bandhanān mṛtyormukṣīya māmṛtāt. O Śarve, may you all be happy. Śarve, may you all be peaceful. Śarve, may you all be free from diseases. Śarve, may all good things come to you. May no one experience suffering. Oṁ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ... Victory to Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān, victory to Śrī Śrī Dev Purīṣa Mahādeva, victory to Satguru Svāmījī Madhavānandajī Bhagavān, victory to Satya Sanātana Dharma, Oṁ.
