The roots of the human life

A satsang commemorating the holy birthday of Satguru Sri Swami Madhavanandapuri Ji (Holy Guruji).

"Titles are many, but for our entire audience around the world, he is Sri Swami Madhavanandaji."

"Guruji said that all your tapasya, all your pranayams and your asanas and meditations, they are all limited. One day they will finish. But satsang will never finish. Satsang is immortal."

The lecturer leads the gathering, reflecting on the spiritual significance of the day and the embodiment of the Guru. He shares personal memories of Guruji's strict yet divine love, his lifelong dedication to satsang, and his service in spreading the teachings of Mahaprabhuji. Disciple Gangapuri then shares his own experiences, recalling profound meditative visions and blessings received through Guruji's grace, illustrating the Guru's role as a spiritual guide and healer.

Everybody, Hari Om, welcome. Today is a beautiful day, Thursday, Guruvāra. The most spiritual planet is Jupiter. Jupiter is spiritual, and so in astrology, Jupiter is a guru. When in your constellation or in your horoscope Jupiter is strong, then you need not worry. At the index finger, at the end of the index finger in the palm, when this is stronger and higher at this point, then this is Jupiter. So when someone who is reading palmistry looks at my hand and says, "Your Guru is very strong," I said, "Yes, my Gurujī is very strong." So today is for us a blessed day, a glorious day, that today is the birthday, the holy incarnation of our Satguru Dev, Śrī Svāmī Madhavānandapurījī. We call him Holy Gurujī. Titles are many: Parivrājakācārya, Brahmaniṣṭha, Śrotriya, Hindu Dharma Samrāṭ, Paramahaṁsavāmī Madhavānandajī, etc., etc. Titles are many, but for our entire audience around the world, he is Śrī Svāmī Madhavānandajī. We all know about Gurujī's life through the Līlā Amṛt, what Gurujī wrote, a biography about Bhagavān Siddhip Nārāyaṇa Mahāprabhujī, our Grand Master and Gurujī's Gurujī. We often speak in our satsaṅgs about soul, jīvātmā, ātmā, etc. So, there are numerous, uncountable souls on earth and above the earth in the atmosphere, like clouds over the whole earth. On the earth, the majority is water, and above the earth, the majority is also water. Yesterday, we had a very beautiful event, the opening of a new ashram, Yoga and Life, in Győr, Hungary, and our dear Hembati organized the opening ceremonies, and she is the director or leader of that center. As well, we had a beautiful peace tree planting in front of the University of Győr, and all the directors were present. So the dean of the university, he was telling when we were standing there to plant a tree, he said, "You know, Swāmījī, all we call green planet, green earth planet, but we don't see the green earth. From a satellite, you see only blue." So it means the water majority is more than the earth, which is visible, but still he said we shall turn the earth into green by planting trees. So, blue-green planet, we shall call. Anyhow, after that, in the lecture hall of the university, we had some talk. And I spoke also for about 10 minutes or 15 minutes. And again, I emphasized to them very much. It would be very interesting if they opened a scientific department in the university, a department branch, a faculty of cooking. Because humans have lost the knowledge which is very important for our life, and not only cooking. Just put a potato in the water and cut it, in salt and something, ketchup on it. That's not cooking knowledge of each and every spice and what effect do particular spices or herbs have on our entire body, glands, nervous system, liver, kidneys, heart, muscles, bones, etc.? And to study this is a science that's called Pakśāstra. And Pakśāstra is the science of cooking. I think 93% of people have lost this knowledge. And it's a very high time. A bright future, a happy future, a healthy future for mankind is to learn what to cook and how to cook, and what kind of spices should be given. Otherwise, you will be in difficulties. Money is governing everything, and even now they are designing apartments without kitchens so you can buy the... good apartment, two bed, three bed, four bed, five bed, balcony, swimming pool, everything, but no kitchen inside because they don't know how to cook, I think. And downstairs, there are beautiful two, three, uh, restaurants you can go and eat there, bringing the law, not allowed to cook in the multi-floor buildings because everyone has different cooking and stink smells everything. This is an excuse. The science, the knowledge is given by the parents, and the duty of the parents is to explain and show the small children what we are eating, how we are cooking, and how to cook. Many of you who are sitting here, about... 60 years young people, maybe also 45 maximum, have still some knowledge from the parents or mothers. They were showing you how to cook, but nowadays they don't know. It is a very sadness, very sad and painful, and pity the future of the humans if they don't learn how to cook. All other science can wait, all other technology can wait. If you are not healthy, and nothing, then what will you do with your technology? So I think, so, this is not a subject of only one weekend, or not just to go and cook, how to cut things and boil it and put it, that's all. No, it is minimum five years. Learning process to make the diploma proper, then you will be healthy, I will be healthy, and others will be healthy, and we will be healthy. Then we will be healthy, otherwise, Hari Om Tat Sat. Finished. Anyhow, so the life of Holy Gurujī is a very colorful life and very full of tapasyās. Gurujī learned cooking also from his mother when he was very small, and then he decided only to cook for himself. So he knew what to cook, how to prepare, and this. Similarly, myself also, my mother taught how to cook, what is this and that, and many things. So lucky I was. Once, I said, "My mother was very ill." She had something with a hand, a very big plaster, and three, four months she couldn't work, make... chapatis or this and that, so two brothers were somewhere working in the field. I was at home, and mother always sitting and telling, "Now you put in this, and now you put it this," and I was six, seven years old, you know, yeah. I learned it, it was very... beautiful, very good. Of course, sometimes chapati had a map of India, or sometimes a map of Austria, and so on. But practice makes it so. The soul, what I was talking about, the souls are on the earth. The whole earth, the whole earth is a soul. This earth is mother earth; it has a big soul. And mother earth has so many cells, which are the souls. Like our body, we have one man's soul, and then all the atoms in our body, everything has also the soul and the light, within us and outside of us. If we neglect it, it's a great, great pity. Certain times of the year, certain times of the age become so a kind of obstacle in life. Certain feelings awake, and we forget the reality, but we will be sorry afterward. But then it's too late; you didn't take care of your field, and birds have eaten all your crops. Now you go there and get nothing to harvest. Why do you cry now? You should know that you have been taking care. So similarly, the energy, the spirituality which is given to us in this body, if we do not take care, then the different temptations, like birds, will take all your energy. Again, you will remain with nothing and go back. Some souls are just recycling, coming and going, going and coming, and some have that blessing that they incarnate in the human body. Ādiguru Bhagavān Śaṅkarācārya is writing, the first blessing is that one is born as a human. Second, that you have spiritual, good parents. Third, that you have good friends who lead you to the satsaṅga, not the kuṣaṅga. If you are strong, you will bring them to the satsaṅg. If you are not strong and are very weak, a slave of your feelings, then they will take you out of this good satsaṅg and put you in the prison of Naraka. So, friend is very important. We call it dosti. Friend means dosti, "do" means two and "sati" means faithful. That one inspires others to go to the spiritual path, go to the satsaṅg, otherwise it leads you to nothingness again. Then it is said the fourth point is that you have a spiritual awakening from childhood. And the fifth is that you meet a Satguru. Then this human life will be more successful. While driving here, I saw on our iPhone that the satsaṅg of Gurujī is running. Maybe now, too, also today, about Gurujī. And, you know, in satsaṅg or in a speech, every time the fifth word of Gurujī was satsaṅg and gurubhakti, which is very rare in our, this Kali Yuga time. What? There is no strength of this jīva. This is somebody else, so we missed the satsaṅg. So, Gurujī, from a very young age, wherever he heard that someone was talking about God or about spirituality, he would stop there and stand and listen. And then he quit even his sleep, and always, wherever there was satsaṅg, even in neighboring villages, he went there with one wish: to find a guru. And we know that he got Mahāprabhujī. Not only this, now it was 35 years or 30 years that Gurujī was traveling around the whole of India, and stayed always with Mahāprabhujī too, and his wish was only one: to bring the divine message of Mahāprabhujī. So in the satsaṅg, Gurujī said that all your tapasyā, all your prāṇāyāms and your āsanas and meditations, they are all limited. One day they will finish. But satsaṅg will never finish. Satsaṅg is immortal. Your tapasyā will end, your saṅkalpa will end, your feelings will end, your practice will end. Many people promise so highly and say, "Yes, I am 1000% sure of Gurudev, please give me the Kriyā, I am ready." And where are they now? On the waiting list for the Naraka, the door of the Naraka. Because they lost that Vākya, Guruvākya and disciple Vākya, both. Disciple's words also have great value. So that saṅkalpa, that when you said, "Yes, I will do," and "I promise," where is that gone? If you lost this, then you lost that human quality. Now, the best part of the vegetable, you took it, and the rest you put in the garbage. It's going to some different rice recycling. Gurujī had a lot of traveling, day and night. That time had little transportation, few roads, and few cars. When I came first time to Vienna, there was no problem to park car anywhere. We were driving through the Kärntner Strasse with Katarina, and we were just parking anywhere near the big church or any shop anywhere, sometimes. The police came and said, "Please, this is a driveway, so move your car from here." And now, not only the parking problem, but you have to fill out money again and again and again. That was one. After a few years, it came. One rule because of the petrols and pollution that once a week you should choose which day you will not drive a car. Do you remember? Some people, old ones, the young, they don't know anything. Don't say yes, but Kīryān, you know that, yes, I'm... So the Katarina had a mid walk, but now, you see, everything is polluted. So, at that time, what I wanted to tell about Gurujī is Bhakti. He always had about 10 to 20 kilos, only Gurujī's or Mahāprabhujī's books of bhajans, carrying and travelling 40 to 50 kilometres on foot from one village to some other big village, a big village where the satsaṅg was on there. Sometimes in the evening, because the daytime was very hot in summer, he started to walk at 10 o'clock until four or five in the morning. He arrived there and then had a little rest, mālā meditation, and gave satsaṅgs. That's called guru sevā, and that's called a longing to achieve that highest path. We are all doing our best, but what we are doing is very little. But okay, little but powerful, quality. So you have the quality. But in quality, you should not have duality. You call the bhaktas, you call the yogīs, and you are talking and criticizing other people. Everyone, there are so many who criticize this person, they criticize that person, they criticize that it was not good, it was not good, I was there. That is, who are you to judge? It's only because you didn't like it. It means not that everyone doesn't like. There is one little story from Gurujī. Gurujī taught, because always wherever Gurujī goes or the Swamījī goes, or you go every day as a guest to some other house, then they try to give you the best cooking and eating. So one day Gurujī came to one family. He was a very famous and good disciple of Gurujī. And I had a great respect for him and great love, and I will write sometimes in my life. He was the main person who inspired me to be a Swami, more than that even. Anyhow, so Gurujī came and they asked, "Swāmījī, what would you like to eat, Gurujī? What should we cook? Should we cook?" So Gurujī said, "Well, just some spinach, vegetables, and corn chapati or the bajra chapati." They couldn't say to Gurujī, "No." They said, "Okay, Gurujī." And the children were standing on the other side, about five meters away, waiting for what Gurujī would answer. And then three of them, the children, they went to the other side and said, "This Gurujī is not a good Gurujī. We thought he would serve some halwa or something, like kheer or sweets, and these laddus. Every day we eat this spinach." Gurujī heard, so Gurujī called that man back again and said, "Come, come, please. What would you like to prepare from your side?" He said, "Gurujī, we always expect when you come, then we get good eating also." So Gurujī said, "Go ahead, what?" He said, "Halvā and purīs and this." Gurujī said, "Yes, but khīr also, please." And Śrīkant, and children were asking, good, good. So, you know, we are all children. We all like this. So, wherever Gurujī came, he brought great happiness and knowledge. So, we all have good friends. We get a lot of love from everyone. From mother, from father, and from friends. But I can tell you, the love which I got from Gurujī, no one could have, and maybe no one would still have had. Love of the Gurujī was divine, great, without any doubt, and his love was also a strictness, very strict. And that's why many couldn't stay with Gurujī. So after 1970 or 80, then Gurujī found that I am now a little capable to do everything. And Gurujī said, "Now I will not decide anything. You decide, you do, finish, study home." I was sad. I asked again, Gurujī, and Gurujī said, "You know that, do it." I said, "I don't know." He closed his eyes and began to have mara, nothing, no argument. But he was doing inside me. You see, what can be more than this love, that Gurujī wrote such bhajans for me. And even he is now still with me. And whenever I have, often I have visions and dreams of Gurujī. When I first had Gurujī's dream, any day, any time, the first thing that appears in my consciousness is a fear. Fear of the strictness, not this, very strict. And the second is the joy of the blessing, and his smile, and love. So Gurujī is for me like a father, brother, friend, guru, God, whatever, all, and myself. So whatever I am here is Gurujī's blessing. That which I get, that which I speak, etc. So, how the master gives the knowledge to the disciple? You don't need any diploma for that knowledge, parāvidyā. Parāvidyā is what we learn in school, university, etc. But parāvidyā, that knowledge comes only from the master and not with force. With the seva, surrendering, and 100% confidence. So today is Gurujī's day of embodiment here. And we know it's also the 11th year that Gurujī left his physical body and became one with the light, and he's one with us. So I bless you all in the name of Gurujī, and I pray for his great blessings. So he's always with us, he's guiding us. And Gurujī said, "Why do you worry? When Mahāprabhujī is with you," Gurujī said, "Mahāprabhujī has more of you with him than me." I smile a little bit, but they are with us. But when you lost the guru-bhakti, you lost everything. So, who are we to judge someone? That person was not good, and this is not good. This is your own karma you are rewinding back again. Śāntabhāva, that is very important. Even if you have hard experiences, bad experiences, you are not to put them out again. You have to digest them. It is your destiny, it is your karma, and that you have to solve. And not by telling somebody you think you will solve your karma. Not at all. That will, others' karma will come to you also. Who will listen? Whom you will tell, that person is not good. Then this not good karma comes to you, and you give to others, and they will feed back to you. It's not easy for humans to silently work on themselves for everything. That is a great one. That's a wise one. So all the best to our dear Gaṅgāpurī, who sings beautiful bhajans. And I think he was a fortunate one, that he had time, a little bit with Gurujī also, to make the Sai Bābā with Gurujī. I think I'd ask Gaṅgāpurī that if he can tell his own experiences with Gurujī. I was not there. I was here, and he was there. So I hope he had good experiences, but the same as me, strict, and this both. I don't know. He will tell. Sadī Prāṇāyām Bhagavān Kī Jai! Gurujī said, "You can stand on this side so everyone can see you." Then bring the chair because they can't see you. Okay. Hari Om. Dear brothers and sisters. Praṇām Swāmījī. Yesterday at 10 o'clock in the evening, I got a phone call, and a brother from Vienna was calling me in the name of Swāmījī. The brother told me, "Maybe he wants to speak to tell you something about Holy Gurujī." So, without long thinking about it, I was saying yes, but after we finished the phone call, I was thinking maybe it's not such a good idea because many people have already told so many stories, and also Swāmījī is always telling many, many stories about Holy Gurujī. So what can I tell? But then I went into meditation, and I was able to recall some experiences, some events with Holy Gurujī. So let's start about my, as I was a young man, I was approximately 30, 35 years old. I was always a spiritual seeker, and I met some spiritual group who was worshipping Lord Kṛṣṇa. And I was living in many temples around the world, in some Hare Kṛṣṇa temples. It was quite a long time before I met Swamījī. And I started many books about the Līlās of Kṛṣṇa. And then there was some time coming when the group was telling me I needed some guru, some master. So I said yes and prepared. But unfortunately, I didn't find my master there. But somehow it happened that a few weeks after Swamiji came into my life, I realized he is my master. And after a few months, making Yoginditā live in Europe, Swāmījī had the idea, maybe I should go to India. So, I agreed, because actually I was searching for a new duty. So, I had never been to India before, but I came with Swamiji the first time to India. We have done some journey through the ashram, first Kailash, and the second was, I think, the Nepal ashram where Holy Gurujī was living at that time. So we came, we arrived in Nepal ashram, and we were very eager to see Holy Gurujī. I never met him before, and when we arrived at the Nepal ashram, we just saw that Holy Gurujī was sitting in front of his ashram, and there was a very deep meditation in front of the picture of Mahāprabhujī. So we were not able to make praṇām in front of him, so we decided also to go in meditation. So what happened in my meditation? I got the darśan of Lord Kṛṣṇa himself, and I realized this must be some very deep connection with Holy Gurujī. I realized this Holy Gurujī must be an embodiment of Lord Kṛṣṇa himself. So what does it mean, Lord Kṛṣṇa? Kṛṣṇa means "who can attract everybody." So also the name Mādhavānand means it's also the name of Kṛṣṇa. And Holy Gurujī was definitely one big saint who was able to attract everybody. I think everybody who was staying with Holy Gurujī was feeling his divine presence, and everybody was touched in his heart. And I was staying for many years in a Jatan ashram. And as you know, many people were staying right in a Jatan ashram. Sometimes it's very difficult to stay there because we have to go through many kinds of fire. But at that time, Holy Gurujī was also living in a Jatan āśram. And he was always helping us to go through all these phases of life. And I always remember we had daily, every night, satsaṅg with Holy Gurujī. We were singing for him, for Holy Gurujī. And after we got personally prasād, I always remember if I have not a good time, Holy Gurujī just gave me some prasād and just told me a few words, something like, "Good man, Gaṅgā Purījī." And he gave me, with all his forces, this prasād. So all my suffering was definitely forgotten. And I was elevated from Naraka to Svargaloka. So this was definitely one of my nicest experiences with Holy Gurujī, but as many bhaktas from Swāmījī have already told some stories about Holy Gurujī. Holy Gurujī's blessing was very strong, and also I have done some experience with the blessing of Holy Gurujī, so that even Lord Śiva was appearing in the form of light in front of me. So it's happened actually that one time, I think it was already twenty years before, there was Śiva Rātri, and Holy Gurujī at that time was in Nepal Ashram, and we desired to get to the darśana of Holy Gurujī. So we were ten people, and we went with just one jeep, one car. I think everybody remembers this was still the blue jeep. So we went, ten people in the jeep. And we went on the pilgrim journey to Holy Gurujī. So it was really a tough journey because it was so tight inside. But it was according to Śivarātri, it was some Daśā, which we had to go through. So we went to the Nepal Āśram. We had a very nice satsaṅg with Holy Gurujī. Holy Gurujī blessed us very much, and after a few hours, we went back to the Jatan Ashram. And somehow I know this night is some special night, Shiva Rātri, and on the Shiva Rātri I have hung some picture of Lord Shiva above my bed in the Chardhan Ashram. So if we were coming back to the Chardhan Ashram approximately one o'clock or two o'clock in the night, I was very tired. I went to sleep, but three hours later, at the beginning of from a murder, I was waking up and suddenly I realized that in the whole room, there was a golden light, yeah. So I was very astonished about this light, so I was thinking, "A dream?" but I realized it was not a dream. But I was eager, where does the light come from? So I was searching for the source of the light and realized this light was coming from the picture of Lord Śiva. So it was definitely one very big blessing from Śiva himself, or originally it was the blessing of Holy Gurujī. Um, yeah, there's another small story. I had one very hard time in the Chaipur āśram, and I was feeling a very deep darkness in my heart, but somehow I was had the deep feeling that Holy Gurujī can help me. So at the time at Brahmamuhūrta, I was sitting in the front office door in the Chaipur ashram and was just waiting until Holy Gurujī will come. And actually, really, Holy Gurujī just opened the door after some time, and he realized my situation. He suddenly saw, and he promptly told me, "Just come in." And he thought, "Think, Bachan. Think, Mahāprabhujī's bachan." And I started to sing Mahāprabhujī's bachan, and at this time, during the singing of the bachan, I was feeling that some light from Holy Gurujī was coming, and it was deeply touching my heart, and with this light, all my darkness was disappearing, and after three bhajans, I was completely a new man. Then I thought it was the blessing of Mahāprabhujī, and I could now go. So Holy Gurujī was like a doctor who was helping, obviously, people in every kind of situation in... the life, and Holy Gurujī was really a realist, and we cannot describe his power, and, um, it's quite impossible, like we want to describe what is ātmā, what is the self. The scripture is just saying, "Neti, neti," he's not like this or that. We can describe the greatness of Holy Gurujī. And Holy Gurujī was always completely focused on Mahāprabhujī. And it is said in the scripture, you can only see these things which are also in you. So if you are completely good, you will just see the good things in the world. If you are not good, you will also see the not good things. But in the case of Holy Gurujī, he was completely fulfilled with Mahāprabhujī, and even he said about the māyā, which means for us illusion and maybe something not so positive, he... was telling, yes, this is Mahāprabhujī's Kāmā. So it's the Māyā of Mahāprabhujī. So everything was in connection with him, with Mahāprabhujī. And in this case, I was hearing a very nice story. I don't know if it's true or not, but Holy Gurujī was always meditating on Mahāprabhujī. And if there was something coming between him and Mahāprabhujī, he was not very happy about it. So sometimes this happens, and in his meditation he gets the vision about some other very high devas, but he was very unhappy about it because there were some disturbances. So, can you imagine, for us it would be something very great if he gets the vision about some devas, but for Holy Gurujī it was some disturbances because he was always focused on Mahāprabhujī. And on the end, there's some very nice story. I was in the seva of Holy Gurujī, and I spent many hours in the seva for Holy Gurujī, and also I spent the night in the same room with Holy Gurujī. And for me, this was one of the greatest times because Holy Gurujī was for me the embodiment of Kṛṣṇa, the embodiment of Mahāprabhujī. And Holy Gurujī has done at least 18 hours or 20 hours of his sādhanā; he has always done mantra japa, every kind of sādhanā. In this night, I realized also, like Swamiji told already sometimes, if Holy Gurujī went somehow in sleep, still the mala was moving, so obviously he was repeating Mahāprabhujī's name. So we are very blessed ones that we met such a great guru in our life, and I think it's really a big golden chance for us. Like Swāmījī is always telling us, we should really use every second, not every minute, every second to progress on the spiritual path. Way, so in this way, I wish you that you will realize your aim in this life, not only so, really in this life, not in the next life. So, God bless you. Hari Om Satip Nādan Bhagavān Akhī Jai Bhavānsyoga Chomheśvaram Akhī Jai Devī Śvarmadeva. Akhi Jai, thank you.
