By practising we can reach everything

The path requires steady practice, not mere theory. Many listen but do not practice, and too much knowledge creates ambition, making one forget the basics. Attempting to master every aspect of life separately is endless; mastering one thing leads to mastering all. Modern yoga often lacks spiritual foundation, and many teachings fade because their core techniques are not properly understood or maintained by successors. Organizations decline due to internal conflict and jealousy after a founder passes. Spiritual work requires systematic practice, not competition. Teach by letting wisdom flow, and ensure the transmission of knowledge to a new generation. Practice gently awakens the subtle energies within.

"if you practice one thing, you will master everything. If you try to do everything, you will lose everything."

"Never practice āsanas with closed eyes. Prāṇāyāma is okay."

Filming location: Prague, Czech Republic

Good morning, all the best. How are you? I hope you are very well. The mystery of life, the history of life, and the journey of life, especially for humans—if we seriously practice and try to know everything, we can achieve everything. But many listen and think, "Oh, it is very nice," yet they do not practice. Too much theory creates many ambitions, and we forget the basic things. There are different parts of life we spoke about yesterday: the prāṇas, the mind, the soul, the ātmā, the senses, the intellect, the desires, different energies, chakras, and so on. If we take them one by one, we will never complete it. Holi Gurujī used to say: if you practice one thing, you will master everything. If you try to do everything, you will lose everything. In front of aspirants, there are too many choices, and we do not know what we should do now. In this world, day by day, new things are coming: new techniques, new ideas. In yoga, people try to have everything. But the original is different. People try to do yoga in a way that has no spiritual background. According to the yoga principles—that is important. One calls this yoga, one calls that yoga. Actually, yoga is yoga. Practitioners, teachers, and disciples should understand. As long as teachers have no confidence, no faith in the technique, then it will lose everything. A few decades ago, what is called Transcendental Meditation was very well known. The author was Maharishi Mahesh Yogī, a great personality who worked a lot. But he worked in his room only; he gave only messages to the people. Yes, he was great. He influenced the whole world. Everywhere was Transcendental Meditation; in Czechoslovakia, it was too. But because then they spoke of flying and levitations, at that time your government did not recognize this. Now, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi has passed away, and slowly, slowly, the entire organization is getting dimmer and dimmer and dimmer. The same thing was with the autobiography of a yogī from Paramahaṃsa Yogānanda and Kriyā Yoga. It was very much around the world; people were eating and this. But one or two of his main disciples, the organizers, died. So it has become like a senior club, limited only to there. Paramahaṁsa Yogānanda was a great person. Similarly, there came once a Rājneesh. When you went to India by any aeroplane, there were at least ten or twenty Rajneesh people, or more—in Australia, in New Zealand, in America, in Africa, everywhere. And when someone becomes more known to the people, if you have a thousand people, be sure all are not your friends. Many are jealous. Many are sitting there in front of me and thinking, "Why is Swāmījī always sitting there? I would like one day to sit here." I will be very happy if someone can take this place. So there were a lot of enemies for Rajneesh, for Yogananda, for Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, and there are many others. What I want to tell you is that their techniques, their teachings, were not understood properly by their organizers and workers, and they could not maintain or continue. I am not telling this out of my ego, but we know the light of Devpurījī and Mahāprabhujī. If Gurujī would not have become active to bring the message now, at this time, nobody would know who was Mahāprabhujī or Devpurījī. But it is his—Mahāprabhujī’s, Devpurījī’s—blessing; they are working in us. And thanks to Gurujī, his blessings, and thanks to all of you, I try to bring Mahāprabhujī’s light in the world to you. If there will be about five like this, or twenty, or one hundred, it will be great. There was a great Swami Śivānanda, living in Ṛṣikeś, known worldwide. He had many sannyāsī disciples. After Swāmījī left in 1963, all sannyāsīs had jealousy and conflict with each other, and they split. One made the name of yoga Śivānanda Yoga, by a very great swāmī, Viṣṇu Devānanda. We knew each other very well; he passed away. And now it is not that spirituality. They just utilize the name Śivananda Yoga. Now they say, "You are your guru." It is not easy to be a guru, you know. You can think that you are a guru. Suppose you know you can fly, and then the pilot will give you the airplane. "Please take off." Will you be able to take off? Yes, you will take off yourself from the cockpit chair and go back. So even he will ask me, "Swāmījī, please come and now land it. Can you land it?" I will gently say, diplomatically, "I think you are good. You can do it." He said, "No, no, Swāmījī, you are the guru, please do it." I said, "Yes, but today I have eye problems." So, my dear, to compare with someone, who are we? We have to learn. That is very important. In the world, there is a lot and a lot of conflict and jealousy. When one shop is running well, others target it: "My shop should also be like that, good." That is, we are greedy for money. So first we should learn for ourselves. There was a lot of conflict before also. In times of communism in your country, always, because I am a foreigner, when I came I had to go to the police station, register, and so on. They told me, "Swāmījī, there is one problem." I said, "What?" They said yogī people are against yogīs. There is a union, a yoga union of Czechs. They are against the yoga union of yogīs in their life; they are against others. So he said, "We can’t understand why yogīs are against yogīs." Tak. So this is unfortunately a problem in such so-called, not spiritual groups, but such kinds of groups. And when you can’t reach what you want to get, then you turn away from it. So there are cultural, religious, nationalities, genders, colors—so many conflicts in the world. How many wars are going on now? How many people are starving? How many diseases are developing? How many children’s parents are sitting in little huts or in tents and waiting, "Will we get something to eat?" Which situation is it—political, religious, or cultural? We do not know. So, my dear, you have to be sure. This is my path, and I know this, and I shall continue—for the sake of your soul, your ātmā, and for your life. Before achieving the first level, we should not dream about the fifth level. We go step by step. So you should practice systematically. That is why our Yoga in Daily Life is declared as a system. And so you have to go systematically. Every yoga teacher, do not think that "I am now the higher yoga teacher." The higher you are, the more you will take care about the foundation. So we shall practice, and we shall teach. Now, teaching means you let flow your wisdom. Když you should teach more people the music so that your Nāḍī Yoga, your energy will flow. And if you know different talents, then give place to them further. But you should know that you master that; otherwise, not. You know that a pilot is good, a flight is good. But you are still not the master of the pilot. So that is the difference. We shall practice again and give the people a safe, sure, clear path. That is why we have this seminar here, this program, especially for the organizers and instructors. And all instructors are not here because they have programs. So we have to make sure that we know what we want, how to help the people, how to teach. So it does not matter how many different kinds of movements are coming around the world; many bubbles come, and many bubbles disappear. But as a system, it will remain. That system, which you are teaching and will give further to your fellow men, is not limited only to me and to you. So, within your center, within your organization, you have to prepare a new generation of talented people. And you have to give the authority into their hands. You just watch them. So they will get confidence. Even if you have learned everything about airplanes and pilots, but how many thousand hours do you have to fly alone? It is long, long until you become a pilot of a big jumbo jet. That is it. So this is how you have to continue now. Never create jealousy against your yoga brothers and sisters, teachers, or practitioners. No competition, no challenges. And of course, everyone needs some bread and butter. And so you should get some kind of payment—not a payment, or acknowledgement, or some donations—so that you can have something. This should organize your competition. Board members, I had a meeting, and I supported you all very much. The board members were looking at each other, so I said, "Look at me." So our path of yoga in life and teaching, you know, you have been teaching. And not only you, your grandparents know. So, how is this Swamiji? And how much has he worked in this country? So I hope that you will continue this beautiful science of yoga in your life. When you practice now Sarva-Hitā-Āsana—suppose you did not practice all your exercises for one month or two months—you should go through Sarva-Hitā-Āsana. Or you are practicing your yoga exercises every day. The exercises from the Yoga in Daylight book are advanced, and now practice Sarva-Hitāsāni. The practice of Sarva-Hitāsāni is the awakening of those prāṇic energies and the activation of all our glands, nerve systems, organs, and ligaments. Now we will practice. So you stretch your legs. No problem. You can stretch your legs towards me. See how clean the socks are? Best would be to take out the socks. Now, I know that you know this exercise, and you did this a thousand times or more. But what I want to bring to your memory again, and you should do what I am telling you, is how. So you concentrate on your legs, from the hips to the toes. And very gently, very slowly, contract your toes. And relax, stretch them. But, not meditating, and eyes are open. Do not close your eyes. Never practice āsanas with closed eyes. Prāṇāyāma is okay. So now, feel each and every joint of your feet, or every joint of the toes, the stretching of muscles, skin, calf muscles, thighs. So just become aware. It is an experiment. So, how much energy, the subtle energy, is awakening? This is the healing, so go ahead. And many of you are doing wrong. I told you only toes. Very good. So I hope that you felt all the organs, all the muscles, all the ligaments, the whole body, through this very simple movement. How much effect is there? So, best for circulation and everything. We say it in India: to kill a small mosquito, do not use the cannon. So if we can get all nice benefits through such beautiful, relaxed postures and exercise, then why should we do something like this? Now, stretch your feet, with the front toes touching the ground. Yes, and towards the body and toes touching the calf muscles, the shin by hand. Yes, so one, two. On the day when you will touch the ground and your shin muscles, you will get a diploma of yogic life. So now please concentrate on your movements, ligaments, calf muscles, the whole lower leg, your muscles, and so on. And now, the thigh muscle. Yes. Beautiful exercise for the thigh muscles, this. So all the sleeping, dormant, stuck, blocked energy in our leg is released. You will see how light it will be when you walk. You can put your hands on the thighs, or you can put your hands back. But stretching. Knees straight. Do not raise your knees up when you are stretching your toes out. But do not forget how your foot is moving, which muscles, which nerves, or which joints are affected. This is very important. Stay longer. Until you get a cramp on your foot sole and back. One. Stay there until I read what is written here. Move to the other side. Toes towards the body. Yes. Try to pull more. Knees pressed on the ground. Now, legs apart. And one foot is rotating clockwise. Slowly. What is happening with the hip joint when you are moving? Your knee and ankle joint. Slowly, other side, and with the other leg. Concentrate more on your hip joints. Once the orthopaedic doctor said, "Swamiji, do not teach such exercises, otherwise we will have nothing to operate." So I said, "Do not worry, there are many non-yogic people." Very good, both legs together. Slowly, slowly, do not make a marathon. Very good, other side. I did not say both legs together like this, both legs were like this. So I will give you now a beautiful relaxation. Legs a little apart, only 20 centimeters. And hold your toes and let your neck hang down. Just relax in this position. Try to drop your back more and more in the front. We have enough time. So, between the Sarvahitāsanam, we should get advanced yoga exercise from Yoga Day Life, if you have practiced already. Remain there, enjoy relaxation because you like more relaxation. Just let your head hang in the front. You can touch the knees. Remain in this position and stretch your legs apart. Do not bend the knees, and see what is happening with your hip joints. Best is when the head touches the ground. It becomes a kūrma āsana. After. Legs apart. Just relax. Knees straight. Do not move your body too much. And slowly up. Legs together. Hands down. We begin to do some other half butterfly. Now, I know you know how to practice butterfly, but I would like to know that we see this movement. How many parts and muscles of the body are influenced? Our shoulder, our shoulder blade, the parallel muscles of the spine, side muscles, breath, as well as the ankle joints, toes; the right upper thigh is massaged. So just this simple movement, how much effect does it have on the body? Suppose that you have an operation on the elbow or the shoulder, and we tell you to hold this, and we do this exercise very hard. So people who have an operation, the physiotherapist says that, "Please, you have to move the shoulders." Then we have to give some exercises so that your concentration goes somewhere else, but the effect goes where we want. So when we do only this, like butterfly, but more is this whole exercise. And when we do the holding of the toes now, and touch the nose to the knee, it is one of the best stretches for our lumbar region and for the spine. So these gentle exercises—do not move the knee. The butterfly is dead. Let the wings lie on the ground. So what we were talking yesterday, and this evening we will speak about you, need not look to me, go down. That is how to awaken the dormant energy to remove all negative or tāmas guṇa energy. So it is called, there should be constantly the flow of positive energy. Slowly come up and change the posture. Other leg on the thigh. A little bit of massage, movement. Both sides, clockwise and anticlockwise. Very good. And then again, hold your toes down. And relax in this posture. The bended knee is touching the ground. Very good. Slowly come up. And now, the full butterfly. Hands on the thighs, touching the ground, you hear the sound of your hip joints. Bone is breaking. Oh God, oh my God, that was my dress. But, you know, at the same time, we should hold our spine straight and pomalo, and you see how moving our shoulder blades, our shoulder muscles, our collarbones going up and down, all muscles parallel to the spine are moving very nicely, gently up and down. And now we stretch ourselves slowly. Concentrate on the spine column until we come down. Yes, head on the ground. Sorry. When the butterfly is sitting on the beautiful, sweet flower, then she is so busy to suck the nectar and forgets to move the wings. Yes, you should observe this. Similarly, you should also not move your knees. Taste the nectar of your spinal column from the very fine chakras. You feel the strength of the thigh muscles or hamstrings. Try to keep your heels near the body. Heels to the body, and touch your nose to your toes. And slowly come up. Remain, your legs remain as they are. Put your hands on the ground. Keep your eyes open. Lean back. And look to the ceiling. Muscles are stretching from the front part of the body. Very good. Sit straight, stretch your legs, and slowly, with the palms, close your fist. Open the palms in the same way how the energy is flowing. Now, rotation of the wrists, the lower arm muscles, the elbow joints, the forearm muscles, and the shoulders. So this is not only for wrist and fingers; to do these gentle exercises awakens more subtle energies in us. Very good. Open the palms. Stretching. Feel with one hand your muscles. And move down, so it means it is not only for wrist joints. And as slow we do, it removes the blockage. Very good, this one. Not hands here, but try to bring the fingers more close here. We feel all the muscles, stretching the hand muscles. Well, you know, all very good. Now, this one. Oh, this is so nice. You can do it in your office, or sitting and writing on the computer, just for two minutes. Beautiful. Good. Now, if we have neck pain, then we try many exercises. But the best way to remove this tension from the neck indirectly, so let us do like this: legs apart, and we do the boat. Rolling, your eyes should all the time follow your hands. Slowly forward. So your neck should move like this, and you know your legs are together, and the other direction, so it is stretching all the back muscles. It is good for our hip joints, and especially for the neck, of course, for the diaphragm, to learn more to take the oxygen in, breathe in, and for the thigh muscles and the hamstrings of the thigh. Good. In Sarvahitāsan, there is one exercise called crow walk. So, who does not know? Oh my God, I am surprised you all know. Then, to be sure, show me. Good, and then one more, that is from the Kaṭhopaniṣad, only one. So stand up, eyes are open, slowly raise your hands up, and slowly bend forward, not like this. Because this is a different exercise, hands down. So when you go up, then you slowly lose your hands and then bend forward. So, hands come down and relax, and then go down. Hold the toes or hands on the ground. It looks beautiful, this big bird eating grass all at once. Condition is one: the knees should always be straight. Even you cannot bend forward too much. And slowly up. So this was just when we slowly sit down, please. We were talking about prāṇa, and very subtle prāṇa in the body, which are responsible for each and every movement, each joint, each muscle. So these subtle prāṇas are stimulated slowly to keep them in healthy condition. So practicing yoga is not a challenge, like in a marathon, because often one falls down due to low blood pressure or high blood pressure. So to keep the balance of the body, we suggest doing it with open eyes. Especially any posture in standing should not be done with closed eyes.
