Share the bread with everyone

A spiritual discourse on the message of Christmas, drawing parallels to Hindu teachings.

"Whenever God incarnates, He is born; a mother gives birth. It is the result of many lives of tapasyā, the austerity of the parents, that such a divine soul is born to that mother."

"The message of Jesus is love, mercy, understanding, simple living, and higher thinking. It does not matter what happens; do not give up your path."

The lecturer leads a satsang reflecting on the deeper significance of Christmas. He discusses the nature of divine incarnation (nitya and nimitta avatāra), the universal message of love and sacrifice exemplified by Jesus, and the struggles faced by holy figures. The talk expands to include teachings on God's providence, the importance of positive thinking, and parallels from the Mahābhārata, such as the story of Kuntī. He concludes with a practical exhortation to cultivate unconditional positive thinking in daily life.

Blessings of our Divine Masters, Ālagpurījī Siddhapīṭhaparamparā, Devpurījī Mahāprabhujī, and our Gurudev, Holy Gurujī. It is a divine blessing to come together. Now is the time of Christmas. Major cultural programs have their particular season. Summer is gone, autumn is ending, and farmers have harvested their crops. Now they have nothing to do. When humans have nothing to do, different vṛttis (mental tendencies) arise—good or bad, fighting, drinking, and so on. The great wise people, the holy saints, thought: "How to keep them busy?" Not only with dancing and drinking, but in a way that creates love, understanding, and harmony. Thus, in this time at the beginning of winter and the end of autumn, Christmas comes. We know the message of Christmas. It has a good message and a painful message. Depending on one's perspective, in both ways it awakens compassion in the human heart: love, forgiveness, and understanding. First, to think of holy incarnations or saints. Whenever God incarnates, He is born; a mother gives birth. God does not simply drop down from the sky. No. It is the result of many lives of tapasyā, the austerity of the parents, that such a divine soul is born to that mother. Incarnation is a spiritual expression, a spiritual word. We can say birth also. We call two kinds of incarnations. Nitya incarnations—nitya means always. These are the saints who are constantly working in the whole world. There is nowhere we can think there is no saint. The other is called Nimittāvatāra. Nimitta means for a particular purpose. When something goes out of the border, then a Nimittāvatāra comes, only for that purpose, and then goes back. But the saints are constantly with us in this world. This is the distinction between nitya avatāra and nimitta avatāra. When humans say their God comes in human form, it does not mean God does not come and take care of other creatures. He is constantly taking care of them. Can you imagine if the rain did not come, the whole forest would die? If the sun did not rise, everything would be frozen. So God, in His capacity and in His way, is taking care of everyone. Kīrī means a little ant, Hāthī means the elephant. A small creature, no matter where it is, gets food. Who is feeding them? God. A big elephant needs 50 or 100 kilos, and he gets it. Who is feeding him? The elephant, by God. Why do humans think that we should take care of the food, that we have to feed the people, that we are feeding them? This is the ignorance of the human. They should know that God is feeding everyone. What they call the food companies are now controlling and producing food as they like, and it is definitely not healthy. But very interestingly, those who lead big, so-called food companies themselves—their husbands or wives and children—they are strictly nourished with organic food. So the problem is money. When money comes, then humans are ready to do anything. In Kali Yuga, money is God. It is said that in front of the temple, people were selling gold. Jesus was there, and Jesus said, "Do not believe in this gold. I tell you what is God. I lead you there. This is not the real one. This is only gold." He did not say, "Do not believe in the wrong God," because he would not say there is a wrong God. God is God. Gold is gold. Maybe you have earrings or a necklace or a ring. Gold is gold. As long as we go behind the form, there is duality. But when we unite all in one, then there is reality. So people lost confidence or faith in God. We humans went too far on the wrong way, and that is why there is suffering. In such a critical time, the birth of Jesus occurred. The message of Jesus is love, mercy, understanding, simple living, and higher thinking. It does not matter what happens; do not give up your path. You know more than I about Jesus, how many difficulties he had to face. Sometimes he was thinking and asking God, "Why me?" And God said, "Because, my son, I trust you. You will do my work." So it is with the master; the master trusts the disciple. The disciple will do the work and continue the work the master has. At that time, the master and disciple are one; they are not two. But they play one theater as two persons. Bhakta and Bhagavān, they are one. One place as a Bhagavān and a second place as a bhakta. But if it is that one, how much trust do you have? So the message of Jesus is positive, spiritual, and uplifting. If all Christians on this earth would follow the Bible exactly, these problems would not be there. There is a story Jesus told about sharing bread with all. How much do we share? Bread means anything. Whatever we have access to, we should give to others. But those thoughts are not there. People who are needy try to abuse others; they are lazy, and many things. That is why the time has changed in such a way. This is one part of Jesus's coming into this world. But, my dear, to enter between the lions and tigers, a group of lions and tigers, is not easy. Can you imagine there are 30-40 lions and 20-30 tigers sitting hungry, and a deer is walking peacefully? It is very difficult. Or you can say, to live in this world of Kali Yuga is like the tongue living between our teeth. The tongue enjoys the taste which the teeth are chewing and giving. But it is in great danger, and when a little mistake happens, the tongue is bitten by the teeth. Without teeth, the tongue is unhappy, and teeth are also unhappy without the tongue. So these are the techniques of how to live and how to go—only with love, harmony, and balance. Because it is said at the same time: you live in the lake of the crocodiles. You live in the water, in the lake of the crocodiles. You should not have an enemy with them. So, living in the water with an enemy like a crocodile is not advisable. This is the situation. So any holy saint, when he comes, has to go through many, many situations and struggles. And who is not a saint? They are surviving, they are moving. They say, "I don’t care, this, that." A saint does not become one through a uniform. You can be married, have children, be working, everything. Saintliness is inside. But the uniform is a protection to remind you again and again that you are a saint, because it was chosen by the great ṛṣis. So one way we are celebrating happiness about Christmas, and you know, to make someone happy, you have to offer yourself. You have to die to live, as the Bible said. Let us come to the second part. We do not know how it was. You know the Pāṇḍavas, Kuntī? It was 7,000 years or more, at the time of the Mahābhārata war. Kuntī was also a virgin. She remained a virgin when her son Karṇa was born. And you know the story about Karṇa? Once the Durvāsa Ṛṣi went to a king's place and stayed there. That king had one daughter. The king told his daughter that she should be in the service of the ṛṣi. One day, in the afternoon, when the ṛṣi was sleeping and she was sitting there giving him air, the ṛṣi opened his eyes and said, "My daughter, I am pleased with your sevā, and I give you a mantra. Anytime when you need, you can get what you want." It was a prayer to Sūrya Nārāyaṇa, the sun sādhanā. So whenever the sun rises, then you should pray to him and offer water. Almost all Indian ladies who have spiritual knowledge and education, when the sun rises, before that they go and wash themselves, put on their dress and tilak, take water, look at the sun, and offer the water. Sūrya, Vaskara, etc., and some mantra. Or there is a beautiful spiritual plant which has great herbal, medical value, called Tulasī, so they offer and look to the sun. Let these women wish for protection, health, and long life for the husband. How many women are here who pray to God every day for your long, healthy life and protection? There would be no more divorce. How many millions of children would be happy to be with their parents together? Let this subject go away. So, one day that young girl, young lady, saw in her room a beautiful window and sunrise, and she thought, "Durvāsā Ṛṣi gave me a mantra, and if I do this mantra, Sūrya, the sun god, will come to me." She looked and said this mantra, and really, from the sun, a human form came to her. Can you imagine? You just look to the sun, and someone is coming to you then. She said, "No, no, I don’t want that." And the sun god came. "Yes, yes, my daughter." We always call any girl "my daughter," "my son." "Why do you call me?" She said, "I was only trying because the Ṛṣi gave me a mantra, and I wanted to know if this mantra is really true and powerful." He said, "Yes, I came because of your mantra. And when I come, I do not go back without giving something. Please wish something." She said, "I have no wish." So the sun god blessed her. "You will have one son." She said, "I am not married." He said, "You will give birth to the sun, and you will remain a virgin." And he disappeared. That was Kuntī. You hear in the Bhagavad Gītā and in the Mahābhārata, and Śrīmad Bhagavad Gītā, about Kauravas and Pāṇḍavas. But Karṇa was on the side of the Kauravas. He did not know that his mother was Kuntī, because she, after birth, left him in the water. The story is long. So there are a few stories in the Purāṇas and in the Upaniṣads about such an event, what happened. But it must be such that a woman who has had many, many years of very pure, positive thoughts—not changing husbands a minimum of five times a year, that has no sādhanā—many, many years you are with the same principle, with the same man, again we will come to you. That is called Joḍā. Joḍā means together, joint: two bodies, one soul. Birds have two wings to fly with; a one-winged bird cannot fly. So, husband and wife, they do these spiritual sādhanās, and with their sādhanās, following the dharma principles and rules, they will together go to the Brahmaloka. But where is there? Searching. But the disciple wanted to go to a very big fair, a Melā. The master said, "Don’t go." The disciple said, "Yes, I want to go." So the master gave him one peacock feather. "When you are there, look through this feather. If you see some humans, sit there." He said, "Master, what do you mean? There will be millions of humans, is it?" No discussion. So he went there and looked through the feather. He saw only wild life: fox, tiger, this, that. Then he saw somewhere under one tree five human beings. So when he walked around the crowd, nobody said, "Hello, good morning." But when he came toward the tree, they said, "Oh yes, come, please, friend, come sit with us." So, my dear, that is why the mother is the greatest one. That is why you preach and say, "First, God is the mother." But that mother. Yes. Then it is said, in the diamond mines you always get diamonds, and in the coal mines you always get coal. So in this life, we did not find the mine; we missed it. So let it go as it is. Next life, we will do something different. We do not know what will happen now; how should we know about tomorrow? But hope is a walking stick from the cradle to the grave. Let us hope. So, my dear, this holy time of Christmas, Jesus coming—but what was that situation? We do not think of Mother Mary. If it is true, at that time, what was the culture and tradition and social norm? Here too, before 50 or 60 years, or 50 years ago, an unmarried girl, when she got a child, they said, "My God." Now it is normal, because five children come and say, "This is my stepbrother, this is my second stepbrother from mother’s side or from father’s side." So when Mother Mary came to know that she was pregnant, it was not accepted by society, and for her husband, it was also not easy. It seems they had to go away from home, somewhere. And what was the further situation, that she had to give birth to her child in the place of the living animals' stable? Cows, goats, donkeys, chickens, etc. Was there no house? Was he not afraid to get infections? And she did not even have the proper cloth to clean and cover the child? What was her psychic, mental, and physical condition? So, should we think of her? Or should we think of this other, that Jesus was born? So it is not her pain alone. It is every mother’s pain. And it is not his sorrows and thoughts, Joseph's, but every father’s thoughts should be. And it should happen like this. After all this, how was the end of the life of both, mother and son? My dear, this is called heroes. This is called the saint. Besides all this, in spite of so many obstacles, they did not lose their faith; they carried on. And they became examples for us. And not only examples we adore; it does not matter which country’s president it is, they will kneel towards Jesus, or Kṛṣṇa, or Rāma. They have no titles. No, it is not Professor Jesus, Dr. Kṛṣṇa, or Engineer Rāma. No. God has a very short Bīja mantra. Only Rām, Rām,... Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa,... Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. Two letters in Hindi. So that bhaktas can easily repeat. When we have a long mantra, then while repeating we forget if we are in the middle or not, then beginning again from the beginning. So, the message of this great sense is to understand both sides, not one side, and give them treatment accordingly. Now, here begins first of all positive thinking. For one, you think positive, and for others, you think negative. Minus plus is zero. Or plus will be negative, because in the beginning, positive does not have that strength. Negative is asura śakti, and that will destroy. Śhaṇik sukha ke liye, śhaṇik sukha ke liye, sab kuch kho jāyegā. Śhaṇik means just for some seconds, or for a little time of joy or happiness, you will lose everything. Everything means the meaning of this life is gone. So, how to keep this positive thinking? If you try for one month to think, it does not matter where and what happens, think positive. I can tell you, your Jīvātmā will be so relaxed and happy in your body. We think positive about those who love us, and who we do not like, we think negative. Then you are not that one. It is not easy to be Jesus, and not easy to be Mahāprabhujī or Devpurījī or Gurujī. It is not easy to be Kṛṣṇa. Ask the Kṛṣṇa, the poor boy. What was Krishna’s birth? More or less, the same story like Jesus: he had to be born in the prison, in that room, you know the whole story. And how the Krishna lied is not acceptable. How was the story of Rāma? They suffered for us to show us the path. Arjuna asked Kṛṣṇa many things in the chapter of Karma Yoga, it is said. Krishna, why are you working? Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa said—because Arjuna asked, "What is it that you need? You have everything." Why are you working so hard? Krishna said, "Arjuna, in the entire universe, nothing exists which is not available for me. Anything I can have without any effort, but still I am working. Why? Because what I do, others will also do. So my struggle, my fight is not for my joy and for me, but the path to show all fellow men that they will go on this path too, to achieve, fulfill, complete, realize the aim of human life." So today, just now, Athayogāru Śāsanam, just now, begin to think positive. Do not bring that object into your thoughts where you have to think negatively. In the 12th chapter, Krishna said, "Those who love their friends and enemies equally, they are dear to me." So if you have power, if you are strong enough, if you can digest, then begin to think positive, and see tomorrow how you will feel. Or until I come next time. Only positive. But I tell you one thing: you think about everyone positively. It does not matter who is who—human or animals, or the weather. For three months, you are thinking only positively, and you are driving your car, and someone quickly overtakes, and you say, "Stupid one!" Three months of sādhana is gone. That is it—you must have the nerves to understand. Where must you become positive? You will have a smile on your face, and police stop that man, and he said, "You see, crazy one." But the police said, "Yes, please go quickly." So the man stopped. The other one asked, why did you let this crazy man go? The police said he was not crazy. Unfortunately, his wife is getting a baby in the car. Till the ambulance comes, it is too late. So let him go quickly. He said, "Oh yes, good, thank you." So without knowing, who are we to judge someone? That is it. So, and if we know that one is guilty, then especially it is our duty that we support that one to understand. Gandhījī said, "I hate the sin, not the sinner." And that was the energy we need. So this is the message of positive thinking. Rest tomorrow. All the best, and now become positive. And who cannot come and sit to this side? And you think, not only for here, our thoughts go beyond this earth. They go to the Brahmalokas. Not you, the thoughts. So in thinking, you think you are in Brahmaloka? No, we are still in the Narakaloka. So, think positive. Write everywhere today: "Positive thinking." Devaīśvara Mahādeva Mādhava Kṛṣṇa Bhagavān Satya Sanātana Dharma kī jaya. Adio.
