Yoga seminar in Vep, december 2008 (1/4)

The Guru Paramparā bestows the ultimate blessing: a chance to escape the cycle of birth and death. Meeting the Guru and receiving the lineage's knowledge is an immeasurable divine gift. The primary spiritual practice is the uninterrupted repetition of the Guru Mantra. This mantra destroys darkness, purifies the mind, opens the heart, and grants liberation from all bondage. Obedience to the guru is essential for receiving grace. A pilgrimage reveals teachings within nature itself. At a holy lake, the water demonstrated three core qualities: have no expectation, like still water; accept everything, as the shore receives all waves; and give constantly, like a flowing spring. These are the instructions for spiritual life.

"Through the repetition of the mantra day by day, I get the happiness of Brahmānanda."

"The light of Mahāprabhujī destroys all darkness."

I would like to begin my few words by offering a greeting to Swāmījī. I invite all of you, as we see Swāmījī here with us, to say together: Hari Om. So, let us say: Hari Om. Praṇām, Swāmījī. You are with us, and it is a divine day. You always tell us that at least on Guru Pūrṇimā and this day, the 5th of December, we should all be together—the big yoga family. Today I will speak a little about the parts of the Guru Paramparā, the master lineage, which is the Śrī Alāpurījī Siddhapīṭh Guru Paramparā. I want to start with you, Swāmījī, and I apologize already now for all the mistakes I will make while speaking. Please forgive me. I am just a little disciple, but I think all of us have a lot of bhakti and love for you, and that is why we will sing. Now, the bhajan which Holī Gurujī wrote for Swāmījī: "Juga Juga Jīvu Maheśvara." I will try to give you some translation. From age to age, Śrī Maheśvarānanda is the one who showers immortal blessings upon all mortal beings. He is always bestowing and spreading ānanda. That is the refrain. It is a great fortune for the country of India that such a great and powerful person incarnated here. He removes the cause of the three tapas, the cause of all suffering. He gives bhakti, jñāna, and yoga sādhanā, as well as the final happiness through bestowing ātmā jñāna, Self-knowledge. He is himself an example in yoga sādhanā and jñāna. He is a conqueror of the world and one who is very competent to help all other humans. To give us what we need, he is so firmly established in knowledge that it cannot be lost. He shows everyone their true nature, making us independent and free. He makes the bhaktas into jīvanmuktas and acts without any selfish interest. It is Śrī Mahāprabhujī who remains always at his side. And so Holī Gurujī says with great joy: "Please remove all temptations and suffering of the world." Siddhita Nārāma Bhagavānakījā, Hindudharma Samrāṭ Satguru Svāmī Madhavānanda Bhagavānakījā, Viśva Guru Mahāmaṇḍaleśvara Paramahaṁsa Svāmī Maheśvarānandajī Gurudevakījā, Jhuka Jhuka Jīvo Maheśvarānandajī, Jhuka Jhuka Jīvo Maheśvarānandajī. Joga, Joga, Jīvo Maheśvarānanda. Actually, Swāmījī once said that when we chant this bhajan, every time we sing it, it increases his health. That is why I put it at the beginning. All our best wishes and prayers are with you, Swāmījī. Today is the Mahāsamādhi day for Mahāprabhujī. This is always a moment of reflection—about our life, about death, and about what comes after death. I think these are very important days to think over. How are we leading our life? How near or far are we from the aim of this life? And what is the aim of life? I think also on this weekend, especially today and tonight, perhaps we should meditate on this. All of us have received in this life a very great blessing, a divine gift which is not measurable. You cannot measure it, you cannot weigh it, you cannot pay for it. It came to all of us due to our good deeds, our karmas from past life. That blessing is that we met Swāmījī and, with him, the Guru Paramparā, and the knowledge, light, and protection of the Guru Paramparā. In many bhajans, it is said that for many lives, for hundreds of lives, we were going in the circle of birth and death. But please, all of us should be aware that now we have the chance to get out of this circle. I have just come from India, where I was for half a year. I was also in the Himalayas, on the traces of Alakpurījī and our Guru Paramparā. I learned very much. It was a great blessing in every way. I should also tell you about this pilgrimage. But one essential thing was there: to follow the guru, to obey the guru, is essential for the bhakta, for the disciple. Every one of us, myself included, is not always following. But it is like this: we should follow the words of the guru blindly. If you are able to do this, then Guru Kṛpā showers upon you. If you are able to do this, then Guru Kṛpā will bless you. I have also chosen a bhajan from Holī Gurujī, dedicated to Mahāprabhujī. You all know this bhajan: "Śrīdīpanī Rañjan, Śabadukā Bhajan." I want to bring near to our heart one thing which you all have, which most of you have: a mantra. This month is an anniversary for me. I have been with Swāmījī for 30 years, and I have had my Guru Mantra from Swāmījī for 30 years. Again and again, you are learning, you are discovering new things. It is interesting for me that this year, during the time I was not in Swāmījī's presence, I found a new practicing technique for the mantra. Should I tell you the technique? Yes, it is very easy. For 24 hours, say the mantra. I can tell you, you will change even after one day of doing it. Okay, we reduce 6 hours of sleep, maybe 5 hours. How much is that? 18 hours. But really, it is not a joke. For instance, on Guruvar, on Thursday, repeat the mantra all the time, night and day. I know we all have so many problems and so many vṛttis. It is very difficult for us to be the witness, to witness all things which are happening in daily life. That is actually our biggest problem: how to calm the mind, how to separate from our emotions, how to come into this ātmā consciousness, into this silence, into this inner peace. How to come there? So it is good to take a saṅkalpa. Actually, it is always good to live consciously regarding our spiritual progress. For instance, make such a saṅkalpa: on one day or two days, or whatever you like, really say the mantra as long as you can. It is good not to speak too much, if possible. But all the time, without any interruption if possible. Of course, if somebody is speaking with you, then speak, but immediately afterward continue, continue. Try this. I tried it this year, and I can tell you the effect is excellent. You are no longer affected by what is going on around you. One of the mantras we all receive from Divine Mahāprabhujī is "Śrīdīpanī Rañjan Sabatuka Bañjan." Here, Holī Gurujī says that the light of Mahāprabhujī destroys all darkness. And that is what we all need. The way to the light, to wisdom, is through the mantra, the Guru Mantra. This mantra purifies your mind. The mantra opens the eye of your heart. Repeat it without interruption. It awakens the cosmic light inside of you. We will have no more fear. You get salvation from all the bondage of karma, and it leads you to Self-realization. No forces can attack you or damage you—not forces from the planets, nor from ghosts and demons. Nothing can have power over you. All the influences of the three tapas cannot influence you. Your heart will be filled with endless happiness, with paramānanda. The mantra which you repeat without interruption—through this mantra you get all, you can develop all your capacities. You will get wealth, happiness, and wisdom. Quite good, no? You should remember this bhajan, but we have to practice it—that is the thing. Even your body will become divine if you repeat this mantra always. Now, Holī Gurujī is speaking to us. Holī Gurujī is the example of the Mahābhakta. He was really repeating his mantra day and night and praying to Mahāprabhujī. That is why he tells us now: "Mahāprabhujī is the endless, eternal, pure, divine light, and in devotion I bow down." To Chandra Devī, the Holy Mother. And Holī Gurujī says to us: "What a great joy I have through this mantra. Through the repetition of the mantra day by day, I get the happiness of Brahmānanda." Now I request that we all sing this together, remembering what you heard now about the power of the mantra, which in our Guru Paramparā is the number one of all sādhanās, the primary source of our sādhanā. Yadaya kamala kiyake kula jave, yedale nitha namah. Kanjana 3d pani ranjana, sabha dukkha banjana. Prabhu deepa niranjana, sabha dukkha banjana. I have little time to tell you something now about the pilgrimage to the Himalayas. The whole pilgrimage was blessed by the ancient Guru Paramparā. We reached all our aims in the high mountains. We could take pictures and film in areas where others had never filmed or taken pictures. It was a great blessing. The time will come when I can show you pictures. We have also prepared a video about this pilgrimage. For the first time, I went to a very holy lake near Badrinath in Uttarakhand. Its name is Satupaṇṭ. It means "The Way of the Truth." It is the way that the five Pāṇḍavas took. The four Pāṇḍavas did not succeed on the way to heaven; only Yudhiṣṭhira reached heaven. There is a special place after Satopaṇṭ called Svarga Rohiṇī. So we were on the footsteps of the Pāṇḍavas. I did not see them personally. I did not follow Yudhiṣṭhira till the end because I wanted to come back to tell you the story. But I tell you, it is a great temptation when you see the far distance. There are very big hills, more than 7,500 meters, the Himalayan range on both sides, and in between is this Svarga Rohiṇī, which means "the steps to heaven." Actually, there are seven steps—like in yoga and daily life, no? The way to heaven. So I prefer to decide to go the seven steps of yoga and daily life to heaven, and not these other steps. Actually, nobody can go there because it is all glacier and impossible to traverse. But you can go the 25 kilometers from Badrinath to the lake Satopaṇṭ. It is a holy place where it is said that Brahmā, Śiva, and Viṣṇu bathe there, and they still bathe there on a special day—every Ekādaśī. The first time I went this year, I went there twice. Not millions of people come to Badrinath, but only between 100 and 200 people maximum come up to Satopaṇṭ. So it is a blessing if you can reach there. The first time we departed at the end of June, and I wanted to reach Satopaṇṭ Lake on Ekādaśī. To tell you how Brahmā, Śiva, and Viṣṇu bathe—I did not see them personally, but something was happening, and this I will tell you. I was completely exhausted when I came to Satopaṇṭ. The path is not one you can just follow. You go through glaciers, but there is no snow and ice; the glaciers are melted, and you have to go over big stones, which is quite difficult. Without a guide, it is not possible. The first time we went up, it took us two and a half days to get there. It was in summer. I wanted to go before a video team came to see the situation. So I came on Ekādaśī, exactly on that day. You hear many stories about what happens when Brahmā, Śiva, and Viṣṇu are bathing. What you hear is true. For instance, some people say there is light on the water, coming and going. Others say you hear water as if somebody is bathing. They say the best time is between 2 o'clock and 5 o'clock in the morning. I knew this, but to tell the truth, I was not able to be in a meditation pose at that time. In the evening when I arrived, there was a tent, and they were preparing food. There is a very small space. I was sitting in the tent and looking at the lake. Then I saw a light chakra turning on one side of the lake. You must know this lake is very special; it has three corners: Brahmā, Śiva, and Viṣṇu. They are called 'stan'. The discus is a sign of Viṣṇu. That was one thing. Then I went to sleep, thinking, "If Mahāprabhujī lets me wake up, then it's okay; if not, what to do?" I did not get up fully, but maybe I was half-sleeping. In the middle of the night, around three o'clock, I heard a sound like a wind blow: "bzzz." This is true, please. It was very clear, and I have never heard such a kind of sound, a wind sound. In the moment, I could not explain it. In the morning at five o'clock, I heard some water, some buzzing water, but I did not look outside the tent, so I do not know who it was. I do not know if it was Brahmā, Śiva, Viṣṇu, or some pilgrimage person. But I think it is not so important. This sound of the wind, yes—I later spoke with some very spiritual sādhus about it. It is like this: astral forms come to the planet, and in other lokas there is not much water, so they come in the form of some elements and take a bath. The next time we went was at the end of August and September. There was a Hungarian, Siddhartha from Budapest, as the video man. But we were not there a second time on Ekādaśī. The way which the four Pāṇḍavas took—this is too long a story for now. I will tell you shortly: In Badrināth itself, the Pāṇḍavas started their way to heaven. Draupadī was with them. There, the Sarasvatī River and Alaknandā River join in the north; it is called Keśava Priyāg. The Sarasvatī River comes from Tibet. Draupadī could not cross this river, so Bhīma, who is a giant, took a very big stone and put it over the water. This man-made bridge you can see till now in Badrinath. Then they went on, but in this place, Draupadī left her body. After, the others went further. Then you go this way, and then Nakula and Sahadeva died in a valley around maybe six kilometers from Badrinath—the youngest brothers. In this area there are many medicinal plants and herbs because both of them had great knowledge about plants and their medical use. Then you go further, and there is a wonderful place that is the north side of the Nīlakaṇṭha, the Śiva mountain. This is called Sahastradhārā, meaning "the thousand waterfalls." It is really a wonderful place because from high rocks, many waterfalls come down. Here, on this place, Bhīma left his body. The next place is called Cakra Tīrtha. The valley has a form like a chakra. Here, Arjuna, seeing the beauty of the Satopaṇṭ Lake, left his body there. Only Yudhiṣṭhira with his dog went to the Satopaṇṭ lake. They took part there and then went further to Svarga Rohiṇī. You may ask: what does this all have to do with the Guru Paramparā? It has very much to do with it, because the origin of our Guru Paramparā is there in the Himalayas. It is Śrī Alāpurījī who resides there, and Śrī Devapurījī was also there in this space. Many people asked me if I met Śrī Alāpurījī. I can tell you, yes, I met him. But he is very strict because he is a Śiva incarnation. I will not tell all my experiences, but I want to tell you in short which instruction he gave me. At Śrī Dev Purījī, we found the cave where Śrī Dev Purījī was meditating. It is a little farther than Satopaṇṭ, a few kilometers. His cave is shaped like two horses, like on the chariot of Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna. It is a very impressive place. To see Ālapurījī... Actually, where the cave of Siddhepurījī is, is called Sūryakuṇḍ, meaning "the pot of the sun." This is Sūryakuṇḍ. Yoga in Daily Life is already very present in Sūryakuṇḍ because we were painting. On the cave itself it is not possible, but on the side, OM and also some flashes—how to go to Śrī Devpurījī's gufā, his cave. So in case you want to go there, the address is Sūryakuṇḍ, over five kilometers from Satupaṇṭ, near Badrināth. There you will find all the flashes. If you are not alone, you can go with your company into another gufā, a cave quite comfortable for at least four persons. It is written there: "Yoga in Daily Life," so you cannot miss it. Also written there is Śrī Māheśvarānanda, with flashes. Now, Alakpurījī. He is the highest of our Guru Paramparā. There is a mountain on the way to Satopaṇṭ called Alkapuri, and from there comes one part of the Alaknandā River. His presence is there very strongly. So, you want to know what he told me? All I cannot tell you; I have already told you some. First of all, it is nothing new for you. The first thing has to do with the guru. To make it short: obey your guru. Another thing—and I really want to tell you this—has to do a little with the Satopaṇṭ Lake. He gave me three very strict qualities to develop. The first one is: have no expectation. The second one is: accept everything. And the third is: give, give, give. I was sitting by the holy lake. When you come to holy lakes, you make a parikramā, meaning you go around, and you also take a holy bath, which is essential at all holy pilgrimage places. The next day when I came there, I was sitting and thinking on the words of the Guru Paramparā. I told you already, there are three corners: Brahmā, Śiva, Viṣṇu. I was looking in the water and thinking on these three qualities: no expectations, accept everything, and give. I was looking at the water. This is also an experience of this year: everything is in nature; all knowledge is in nature. You just have to have the eye for it, but everything is written there. I was sitting and looking at the water surface. It was interesting that on the three corners, there were different waters. On one side, which is Brahmā's side where you enter the lake from the mountains, the water had no movement; it was just plain. I said, "Aha, no expectation." Meaning nothing in you—just plain, no movement. So I understood: to have no expectations is like this. On the side where the Viṣṇu corner is, the waves came to this corner. The waves, you know, the waves are everybody. They had a direction from the wind, and they all came to Viṣṇu's stand, to this shore. I understood: the water which is coming to me is acceptance. Everything comes. Accept, accept. The shore is unmovable, and all the waves come to me. Whatever comes to me, accept it. It is God's gift, whatever it is. That was the second thing I learned from the water. On the third side, water is constantly coming from higher up. Water is always coming into the lake the whole year. It is the third quality: give, give, give. From one source which is higher than you, give, just give. So that is what I received as a teaching from the water in Satopaṇṭ. So remember what our highest Guru Paramparā told us: no expectations, acceptance, and give. I want to finish this webcasting by singing the glory of Mahāprabhujī and Śrīpūjī Dīpā Dayālu Dātā. Here in Vrindavan, we will continue now to make prayer, and we will dedicate this prayer for the health of our beloved Swāmījī. Today he was not able to come, but tomorrow at 10 o'clock you will see the Master live in this hall. We wish you good night. Happy day, happy night, happy life. Hari Om.
