Walk on the path of the truth

A morning satsang on spiritual practice and the threefold afflictions.

"You cannot run away from the problem. You have to operate, you have to get a solution, you have to clear up your mind."

"There is no painkiller. There is only one painkiller: your good karmas."

Swami Maheshwarananda (Swamiji) leads a webcast satsang, exploring the three sources of suffering (ādhibhautika, ādhidaivika, ādhyātmika) and the concept of spiritual debts (ṛṇa). He discusses environmental and mental pollution, the law of karma, and the importance of self-honesty and righteous living (dharma) as a path to liberation. The discourse weaves in teachings on the five sheaths (kośas) and concludes with an introduction to a guided meditation led by disciple Umāpurījī.

Oṁ Śānti, Śānti, Śānti. Salutations to Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān, Śrī Śrī Devīśvar Mahādev, Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandjī Bhagavān, and the eternal Satya Sanātana Dharma. Blessings of Mahāprabhujī, Gurujī, Devapurījī, Alagpurījī, the Siddhāpīṭh, the Paramparā, and all dear ones. From our part of the world, it is good morning. On your side, it is perhaps evening or early morning. This is a place where the sun rises first, where the date begins first—they do everything first. Today, in this fission time, they have changed that most complicated system called daylight saving. Immediately, I could feel the cows calling for milking. Birds are feeling restless. Everything is affected. But what to do? We humans always like to change something, and still we are not happy. Nevertheless, our webcasting will be at the same time for Europe, America, and Australia. We are trying to practice Ātmānubhūti here, but the discipline within is dominating, saying, "Don't follow." There are Ādhibhautik, Ādhidaivik, and Ādhyātmik. These three tapas are giving a hard time to the practitioners. Sometimes rain, with its beautiful music on the roof; sometimes a bio-sauna; and sometimes the wind, Vāyu Devatā. In Vedānta, Devatā also means the elements. There is Mātṛ Ṛṇa, Pitṛ Ṛṇa, and Deva Ṛṇa. Rain means we owe something to our mother, our father, our ancestors. And Deva Ṛṇa: Deva means Annadeva, the food god; Jaladeva, the water element; Agnideva, the fire; Vāyu, the air. Ākāśa doesn't come in the Deva, but it is also Ākāśa Deva. Pollution in space—the pollution which humans create comes back to us as revenge. One can ask, how can we pollute such a wide, deep sky? Yes, we can, and that is the problem we have now with the ozone. In Satyuga, Dvāpar Yuga, the age of Yajñas, they tried through yajñas, different herbs, and mantras to seal this ozone so it would not affect our environment and the living beings. We have forgotten. Instead of having the smoke of the havan, the yajña, we are creating many factories and chemical smoke. Chemical smoke, electronic smoke, petroleum smoke, etc. Therefore, the Vedas said: peace in the atmosphere, peace on the earth, peace in the water, peace in the herbs, peace in the sky, peace in the Brahman, and peace within us begins our action. From our side, we pollute and influence all, and that again comes and ends in us. You may call it karma, or you may call it your actions. When you burn poisonous things in your house, you will inhale them, and that will come back to you. You put it in the fire, it went in the air, and it went again into your body. More or less, it attacks again those who caused it. It is very hard to purify. We think the ocean is very big, but you know how much plastic is in the ocean. Someone said it is more than our Earth. So much pollution and plastic are there. It is said we owe to our mother, we owe to our father. Father means all ancestors. And we owe to the Devas, the elements, which are the source of our life. If the fire element is missing, we will die. If the water element is missing, we will die. If air is missing, we will die. If earth is missing, we will die. If space is missing, we will die. So what can be more than this? God is within us, with all these principles. Then comes the Ācārya Deva Bhāva. We owe to our masters who taught us the most valuable things, good things to help this world, help others. That's called Apara Bhakti Vidyā, the knowledge about this physical world. Then the Ṛṣis, those great saints who gave us this beautiful divine science of yoga, the divine science of mantras, the divine science of wisdom, etc. All that we have today—our intelligence, wisdom, knowledge, abilities, profession—all that we have learned is thanks to those saints who designed this. They also designed society, how to live and protect. If we respect these five, there is no war, no fighting, no quarreling, and no problem. If we don't respect this, we create different kinds of pollution. The most dangerous pollution is mental pollution. That mind becomes greedy. Out of greed and selfishness, a man thinks, "I don't care. I will do what I want, whether one sees or not, whether one wants to do with me or not. I will do." That is the most stupid thing we can do. Yes, you can do, but you should know it will come into you again. You will be involved in that karmic smoke, not only on this earth but in the astral world too. If someone has a problem and wants to die, not live anymore, it means you run away from the problems. When you die and come to the astral world, your problem is waiting for you there, like a shadow of your body. You don't like your shadow? You get into an aeroplane and run away from your country. You get off the aeroplane, walking out, the shadow is walking with you. So the problem is there all the time. You cannot run away from the problem. You have to operate, you have to get a solution, you have to clear up your mind. The pollution is in the mind, and so the physical pollution, emotional pollution, causes many, many diseases. But the Ṛṣis made beautiful yoga nourishment: Āhār, Vihār, Āchār, Vichār. Āhār is diet, nourishment. Vihār: with whom you spend your time, to whom you are talking. Āchār: conduct. Vichār: what are you thinking? You think your thoughts, nobody can read. Of course, nobody can read, but there are some who can. But who knows? They don't tell, and who tells? They don't know. Now, what you are thinking, you know that nobody knows what you are thinking. But there are two persons who know what you are thinking now: one is yourself. How can you make yourself blind? You cannot cheat thyself. You cannot make thyself stupid. Thyself sees; the ātmā sees, the Jīvātmā sees. And the Jīvātmā, if it is a good thing, is happy and relaxed. If it will have a negative result, your ātmā is like in smoke, where you can't breathe. In such a room, there is no oxygen, only pollution. This Jīvātmā, in the case of this body, has the five kośas, the five different layers: the body of nourishment (Annamaya Kośa), body of energy (Prāṇamaya Kośa), body of mind (Manomaya Kośa), body of intellect (Vijñānamaya Kośa), and body of the causal sheath, the emotion (Kāraṇa Śarīra, Ānandamaya Kośa). Ānandamaya Kośa means not a bliss—forget, my dear. You are sitting in the boat of the Ānandamaya Kośa; that is a complicated one. So, no one can run away from the problems. These problems will accompany you, very, very loyal and faithful, through the whole universe. I used to say, the soul is fluttering on the waves of time, through different areas, different phenomena, sometimes happy, sometimes unhappy, and it's a terrible situation. Here, at least, you can call the ambulance. Here, at least, you can call the doctor, Ārtī. And Aarti will say, "Quickly, quickly, please, where is my injection?" Anesthesia—at least that you will not feel the pain, the painkiller. There is no painkiller. There is only one painkiller: your good karmas. All the pain causing constantly is bad karma. Therefore, we can't run away. From that astral world, you pray to God. I think every soul prays there: "Please give me again a new chance, that I will not create this problem, this smoke, and I will do my best prayer to you, so that I can come and breathe in happiness." You get a new birth, and the same problem is waiting at the time of the birth already. That's what we call faith, destiny, kismet, bhāgya. Again, you will face the same. So it means from death till again this birth, you thought you left problems behind you, but they are not behind you; they are in front of you. Therefore, Guru Nānak Sāhib said in one bhajan: "Teri bitti umar hari nām bina shumiran karle mere mana." Oh my dear, till now your life just went without spirituality, without God's name, without practicing prayer, meditation, mantra. "Sumiran karde mere mana"—oh my mind, at least begin now. What happened, happened. This sādhanā, ātmanubhūti, can remove the layers, layers after layers, from that karma. But sometimes they don't remove the layer. They see the layer, and they will again swallow it because it is sweet. Again, you like that problem, and you get again in your mind that, "Of course, I will go and eat ice cream again." You will have that throat problem again. Dr. Roman, sitting here, tells strictly, "Don't eat ice cream." You say, "Okay, doctor. I promise you, I will not eat." The next corner comes ice cream, and you say, "Well, I told the doctor tomorrow I will not eat anymore, but today I can eat it, yes." These are the self-excuses that are most dangerous. You need not punish thyself, but you should learn, educate thyself. Finally, understand, child, what are you doing? Parents say it, you know. It is your future. "Study, my dear, study. Do something." They tell our parents for our best. The best parents will let the children at home in the evening, be with them and sing nice songs, bhajans, and cultural songs. Every country has beautiful songs and a beautiful culture. But parents don't know what culture is. So they throw their children into the ocean of ignorance, the ocean of suffering, trying this, trying that. This is a horrible thing. Ādhibhautik, ādhidaivik, ādhyātmik. The disease which is attacking us is Dhanivātika. The disease which comes, mental attacks, depression, sadness, unwished desires, and many, many problems, which doctors nowadays call psychic problems. That is called tapah, the hard time. And the disturbances of the other creatures. We have here many, many mosquitoes. They are hard, giving us a hard time. You meditate, and a mosquito bites somewhere here. Similarly, an ant bites somewhere else. So you do here, and then you here, and something is climbing here. This is the vikṣepa; it's called Tṛtāpa. 'Tri' means the three, 'tāpa' means heat. Here, heat means troubles, problems. Therefore, the Ṛṣis have given protection. Take care and make sure that such a creature doesn't attack you. Take care that you don't come to certain problems which you create through your innocent thinking—that you think you can do everything, no problem, no one sees. So, the one who you can see what you are thinking now, and you say that nobody knows what I'm thinking, it means you know, my dear. Be faithful to you. Don't lie to thyself, don't cheat thyself. But still, okay. Only I know, and I like it, but it will come after. I will see, you will not see. You will suffer. This is this. The second one is here also. See, everything knows what you are thinking here in this tent, and that's God. God is everywhere, and God sees everything. So you can hide from that which you can't hide from thyself. But if you try to hide, you can't hide from God. Therefore, the highest, the best philosophy is karma. And we have seen this: Dharma, Artha, Kāma, and Mokṣa. These three are very gentle. It is hard, but not so hard. Dharma, earth, wealth, and Mokṣa, liberation. Kāma has caught every creature. Every creature is suffering from this. When it is in you, in me, or in anyone, that karma will not let you be at peace. Therefore, through Jñāna, understand ātmā, the soul, and your being. Understand and deal with that understanding. The problem is that you are never happy. Sometimes I hear of a 98-year-old couple married for the seventh time. Yes, why not? That's called a longing of the karma. Where is the Mokṣa? Oh, they left it behind on the other beach. Mokṣa is somewhere on the other beach, and your boat is in the middle of the ocean. So, Ātmanubhūti doesn't tell you to kill your feelings. No, no. You can't kill. But understand. Understand that and know the aim of life. That will give you peace, and you will continue your good karma. So karma means not only the person, but also doing the good deeds, good things. When the world was created, at that time in the cosmic parliament, in the upper house, they gave the law to solve the problems and maintain the law for sustainable creatures, for sustainable life on this earth. So they gave such a system. It doesn't matter which kind of creature it is. Even the trees, they also have desires. They also give fruits and blossoms, and the seeds grow again. This is sustainability. It has to be continued. Otherwise, very soon, it will remain only the dry rocks, nothing else. Dharma, Artha, Kāma, Mokṣa; Ādhibhautika, Ādhidaivika, Ādhyātmika; Tāpatraya and the Antarāya; Vikṣepa, Mala, Vikṣepa and Āvaraṇa—impurity, restlessness, and the curtain of ignorance. Antaḥkaraṇa. This is Manas, Buddhi, Citta, Ahaṅkāra. Antaḥkaraṇa. Who is working in us? Who is doing this all? This is called Manas. First is mind, Manas; Buddhi, your intellect; Citta, your vṛttis, thinking this, thinking that. You are sitting and eating nice food. What are you thinking? "It would be very good if there could be some sweet dish." You are eating very delicious food, but still you are thinking about another dish. So, what does it mean? What you have in front of you, you have already rejected. You are eating, but you are not eating. You are eating something different. You are thinking of the sweet dish. So, when you are not one with your present plate, what is inside, and you don't eat and respect that your food, that is not it. It will not create the healthy condition in your body. That will not give you prasāda, amṛta. Do not neglect and insult your food. Food is not for humans—any kind of killed animals. No fish, no frogs, no dogs, no cats, no cows, no goats, no sheep, etc., etc. Because humans are standing very close to God. Naraseṇārāyaṇa bāṅsakte hai. O human, you can become from human to God. If you have that mercy, and if you have that love and mercy in your heart, you can't eat the dead body of any creature. I have no vegetable shop, that you will buy onion in my shop and not buy the meat somewhere. I have no business with the vegetables. But I have a business of my spirituality, that I want to give spiritual knowledge to you. Why? Because I will gain a lot. Profit. What kind of profit? Spiritual karma, spiritual dharma. And you will do the same thing; you will gain again also immense good karma. Four days is moonlight, then again dark nights. Two days before the full moon, one and two days after the full moon, then again the darkness is appearing. Dhana, the money; Yauvan, your youth; and the guests—they are only for four days with you, after which they will disappear. Ignore one, why you are doing, have such a proudness with you. This life, this youth is like morning dew on the grass, this, what you call dew, morning dew. That will shine, and it disappears. Hari Om Tat Sat. So, what are you born for? What for did God give us human life? This problem did not solve but created more. Come to God. Which way will you show your face to God? Dharmarāj will say, "Oh, my dear, come on." He said, "Yes, Dharmarāj, destiny, my destiny." My destiny is asking me, "Maheśvar Ānand, come. For what I sent you, you gave. It asked me to go become human again." You need not explain anything to me, Maheśvar Ānand. Look, here is your picture. I will not be able to look at Dharmarāj. I will look down. He said, "Looking down or up, side, left or right, it doesn't help you. Now, I put you in this boat of your destiny. The boat will lead you according to destiny. Go, my dear." You have such a divine quality, and you support all the creatures and humans, and you are loyal. And with Guru Kṛpā, Guru Vākya, Dharmarāja will stand up and bow down to you and say, "Please, there is a boat for you to the Brahmaloka." The decision is there, not in you. We cannot give the decision that, "I did good." Who are you to say that I did good? Oh yes, my company was good. I've worked so much this year, five billion dollars profit. Yeah, for you, but from where did this money come? From poor people. If this five billion dollars profit, you give it to the poor children and ill people, and hospitals and schools, and for the birds, then I can tell that you have not five billions, but you got one hundred billion dollars in your favor, in your account of your future spirituality and your path. Tyāga. Therefore, tyāga. Tyāga is not easy. There is a dharma. You have to follow the dharma, your words. How many times have you broken your words? How many times have you played tricks? How many times have you made others stupid? How many times have you thought you are the best? My dear, everything is written there. Dharmarāja is already... He tried to calm us down. Raining nicely, thank you Devapurījī, because Devapurījī measure and... "Don't frighten them so much," Mahāprabhujī said. "Enough, Mahesh, give them ātmanubhūti." Therefore, now in meditation, but our dear Umapurījī—Umapurījī is a 35-year, 30-year disciple. It was a hard nut to open, this. Yes. The ego of Umāpurī is not ordinary, yes. So it takes time to roll back. But sometimes it is said, a string which is twisted and you put in the fire, it will burn. It will burn. Everything is burned. But this twisting is still there in the form of the S. But still there. So, Gurudev will wait until you will become flat. That's Guru Vakya. So Ātmā Anubhūti meditation, that special Kriyā, Umapurī is going to teach you. She will take you to one thought again and again, to that Kriya from Manipur and other parts. I don't tell because people will say, "Swāmījī, why are we sitting here to practice in meditation?" So, it will be a commutation, one and then you will see there is one president, one prime minister. But how many are eager to become prime minister? How many try to pull that prime minister down? How many try to pull that president down? These are your vṛttis, and your feelings. So one thought: Holy Gurujī said yesterday in this bhajan, "Kāyā Mādhavānanda Satya Pāṭh Chalnā." So at least in your meditation and in your action, go on the path of the truth. Brahma satya, jagat mithyā. Everything is very painful, but you have to clear all the vṛttis and all the desires and see inside is God. Inside you is God. Inside you is that light. Take away this blanket of laziness, ignorance, proudness, anger, hate, and that you think you are very clever. Clever is only God. So yesterday we spoke about mantra, how to practice, and it will come, something good again. Let Umāpurī do. My dear all bhaktas round the world, think of Ādhibhautika, Ādhidaivika, Ādhyātmika, and Annamaya Kośa, Prāṇamaya Kośa, Manomaya Kośa, Vijñānamaya Kośa, and Ānandamaya Kośa. If you don't remember, read in the book Hidden Powers in Humans, Kundalini and Yoga from Yoga in Daily Life. Bless you, and see you after the meditation. Kārkī dayā dayālu bedā tupā lagāde, Kārkī dayā dayālu bedā tupā lagāde. Śaraṇ tu chindh mitāde. See you tomorrow, same time.
