Fasting is a purification
Fasting is an auspicious practice for inner purification and spiritual development. Distractions disturb inner peace, but how one sees creates the world. Many traditions observe fasting, such as the Islamic Roja, a strict fast honoring the moon, a symbol of Śiva. Fasting purifies the negative radiations humans emit, which frighten animals, as violence emanates from human life. Much negative energy comes through food; sāttvic food brings purity. Eating meat involves great violence, as creatures suffer immensely. Humans should have mercy and survive on grains and fruits. The tradition was established by ṛṣis for bodily purification. Excess, undigested food causes disease; fasting allows the body to consume excess fat and strengthens the digestive fire. Fasting cultivates discipline, saves resources, and benefits all creatures by reducing demand. Spiritually, fasting and meditation make one aware of desires, or vāsanās, which are the cause of all troubles. One must have the power to say no to dependencies. On a fast, consume only water; do not replace it with nourishment like milk or juice. Prepare the evening meal as a loving offering to God, as a mother does for her child. The offering, the eater, and the digestion are all Brahman. This practice brings health, discipline, and inner peace.
"A mother gives birth to a small child. When the child is about eight or nine months old and wants solid food, with how much love does the mother prepare something for the baby? That's it. Similarly, you should prepare food for God like a mother does for her child."
"Brahmārpaṇaṁ—I offer to the Brahman. Whose offering is Brahman, who will eat is Brahman, and who will digest is Brahman. That becomes prasāda, and your fasting will be successful."
