Wisdom in life

A morning satsang discourse on destiny, karma, and practical spiritual living.

"Life's situation is for everyone more or less the same: our destiny. If we believe in destiny or we don't believe, but there is our destiny, our good luck or bad luck."

"In yoga, there are three principles to follow... Āhār, vihār, āchār, and fourth, vichār."

Swami Vishwaguru answers questions and gives a talk on the nature of the soul, destiny (kismat), and the karmic cycle. He explains the three bodies (physical, mental, subtle) and outlines four key life principles: nourishment (āhār), recreation (vihār), behavior (āchār), and thoughts (vichār). The talk includes practical advice on family, education, and managing the mind, illustrated with a parable about taming a wild horse. A brief Q&A session follows, covering attachment, patience, and family harmony.

Om Śānti Śānti... Good morning to everybody. Welcome. Nice questions will have a nice answer. And no question means also there is no answer. Good. So, overthink, but don't ask the questions, like what should I do when my computer doesn't work. This question yogīs don't give. Often people ask questions through SMS, email, telephone, or by writing letters. "My cat is very ill. What should I do? My cat is lost. When will she come back home?" And certain things, people ask questions also. And sometimes, the answer comes also. So it's good we understand how much one loves their own house pet. For the people, their house pet is a dear one. And for the yogīs, their house is the whole world. So, all creatures, they are our, for the yogīs, our house pets. So, we love all. Life's situation is for everyone more or less the same: our destiny. If we believe in destiny or we don't believe, but there is our destiny, our good luck or bad luck. What does that mean, and where is the good luck, and where is the bad luck? The roots of good luck or bad luck, or the destiny, kiśmat, bhāgya, are caused by our own actions. And actions are our ambitions. The soul, which is involved in the action and the reaction of our action, remains when the body dies. The consciousness remains, the intellect remains, and the feelings and emotions remain, but they are disconnected from the physical body. Like when you have a dream, and in the dream you are at the Sun Sign Coast and sleeping in the Gold Coast. Now, a pleasant or unpleasant situation in your dream at the Sun Sign Coast causes you fear or happiness. You wake up, neither fear nor happiness is there because you are sleeping comfortably at the Gold Coast. So we have three different bodies: physical body, mental body, and subtle body. And a subtle body, which is like a balloon... In the balloon is the air, so is our own phenomenon. It is like a balloon, and our soul is involved in that, and all our beautiful good deeds or our wrong deeds, they are all in that balloon. Each good thought and good action brings enlightenment into the balloon, and each negative thought brings darkness. The soul is traveling the endless universe, and in due time, according to karma, kismat, bhāgya, destiny—whatever we call it—it descends toward this earth, this planet. That decision is not ours; the decision is of our destiny. So life situation begins there and here both. The life situation which is in the astral world we can't change; we cannot, we have no power at all. But the destinies which are manifested on this living planet, we can do something, and we can change. So, the soul is coming here to this mortal world to work out all good or bad karmas, actions. And karma is coming to every individual, the one who did it. Every thought which goes out of our brain will come back to our brain, like a boomerang. When you dial a telephone number, only that telephone will ring. Science has proved that maybe thousands of kilometers far distance, but that particular number will connect you there only. Similarly, around Earth, there is the fog of the souls, but still everyone has their individual life. Are they blessed or not? That's all which is directed towards the human body. So first, luck is to be born as a human. Second, we are blessed that we have very nice parents who educate us in the best way, spiritual: ethic, humbleness, kindness, etc., because our intellect needs education—not education of university or this, but for human, the education in the lap of the parents is the most, most valuable and needed. The third point is that you have very nice friends or colleagues, your school teachers, your neighbors. Then the next point, the fourth, is that you have within yourself an urge, a longing, a feeling of the spirituality. Spirituality is not fanaticism. Spirituality is not some kind of following this religion or not that religion. Spirituality is that when it awakes within us, it says, "Who am I?" So, in a human, we awake the question. A human asks, "Who am I, and from where do I come?" Now, from where did we come in this life? Perhaps you or me, we were born in Africa or South America, or in America, India, China, Japan, here, or somewhere else. So, from where we came, we don't know. After the birth, after certain days or months, slowly, slowly, a curtain falls down from the past. We don't see anything. If we see the past, life will be not pleasant: how we lived, where we lived, what situation was, how did they die, how much pain, etc., etc. God has put a curtain. We can't see. Therefore, in yoga, we say, don't think of the past. The past is past. You can't catch the past, even if you fly on an airplane. The future is not here. Do not dream only about the future. Our future will be like our presence, because what we do now, we will get in the future. For example, I will act now, say something. It presents now, "Please bring me a glass of water." In the presence, now I ask for water, and the future is the next minute, so water will come to me. If I had not asked, the water would not have come. So similarly, whatever we do in presence, with our ambition, with our desires, it will come. Then the last point is, when you have such feelings, desires, or longing, or whatever we call spiritual development, then we need a guide, a master. Then this soul is one of the most blessed ones. Sure, it will come to the supreme or to the divine light. That soul will be free from all the band-aids. Everything will become clear. Tonight, on the last night, it was very dark. A few friends were sleeping here, and they had to get up and look: where is it, where to go if there is a computer lying or this machine lying? Because there was darkness, and now it's sunshine and everything is awakened. We see everything very clearly. So this is the difference between knowledge and ignorance. So knowledge comes, then we can avoid many things in our life. Life is a river which is constantly flowing. The river has curves, but the water doesn't have curves. So in this body, we are as water, as our soul, and our destination is towards the ocean. And ocean means the endless, the highest, etc. The situation in life is that we should not overthink a lot. Out of emotion, we should not trust or something, except. If you accept, then you are bounded. It is your promise, and breaking the promise is another strong tie or a barrier in your development in this life. Then you have to work a little harder. Changing does not change the problem. Many people think, "Oh, I will die, I can't manage anything, suicide." But suicide does not mean that all problems will be solved. Problems are there to solve, and we can't run away from the problem. We shall face the problems, and we shall work out life situations. In this life situation, in yoga, there are three principles to follow. It becomes lighter, easier, clear, and safe. Etc., and these are the three principles, don't forget. Keep in your mind. It's called āhār, vihār, āchār, and fourth, vichār. Āhār, vihār, āchār, and vichār. Āhār means nourishment, food. So, what you eat, you should know what you are eating. Be sure that this is not a poisonous mushroom you are eating. That poisonous mushroom will trouble you, or it can kill you. So, what you eat, make sure from where the food came, how food came, and how it is. So, our diet, this is a major part of our life, is our healthy nourishment. A long time ago, there was no question about organic, and therefore, in yoga books, in old scriptures... In the Upaniṣads and Vedas, there is nothing written about organic. This question of organic began from the last century. They tried to develop artificial things, what we call chemical and plastic. The ātmā is immortal. Our ātmā is immortal. There is no weapon that can kill, no element that can destroy. Death cannot take away. Our ātmā is always immortal. But now humans have managed to make one more thing immortal, and that's plastic. Plastic is immortal now. We can't destroy plastic. Even if you burn it, the plastic remains in the smoke, in the heat, and in the space. They say now also, even in our body, in the body of other creatures, there is some quantity of plastic. So perhaps we will be plastic creatures then. Then don't go near the heat, otherwise you will melt. So, the problem cannot be solved while running away. Problems are there to solve, to work out, and then the soul will be happy. So life situation is there, but definitely there is a destiny, karma, that you will meet someone somewhere today. Anything you meet and face in the street, anyone, it has been sometimes in your account. So whatever you are facing, think positive. When you see the dog on the street, it is imprinted in your subconscious, that dog. And you don't know this dog who was in a past life. So it's not a question of a dog, the body of the dog, but the jīvā, that's all. And when the dog looks at you, and you look at that dog, either dog will be angry. Yes? It means that dog has revenge from a past life. You were not nice to that, but not as a form of the dog. Some other creature. Our dog is nice, and you also smile. Nowadays, they are saying in Germany—my German friends, please don't be angry with me—they are looking, but they are saying in Hamburg, "If you want people to smile, that people come and they smile, then bring one dog." As soon as the dog... Then, everybody says, "Oh, how beautiful, how real!" The smile... and if a human is passing and says, "Good morning, good luck," you see, we lost relation to the human because we can't trust the human, but the dog we trust, you know. When you come home, compare the dog and your husband. Both? Your husband will say, "Yeah, okay, how are you? Come in." But the dog will not let you go. He will jump on you, and this and that, and you know how nice he is. So you will spend more time with the dog than to go to your husband. Animals have that love. A husband also has very much love; there is nothing to say. And the husband is so happy, that how happy is his dog, and how happy is that his wife loves this dog, or her husband loves this dog. So that is a harmony created between. But the humans, we are slowly, slowly getting distance from humanity. The problem is that because humans do not have family education. There are some families who are sitting with children at home, speaking and singing some nice songs, and telling stories and this and that. Now, the children, after a few months, you send them away to kindergarten. And now it's a new fashion: before getting pregnant, you have to organize a babysitter. And they are proudly saying, "Yes, I have a babysitter now." This child, three, four, five months old, a little child, doesn't know who the real mother is. The child is spending more time, not money, sorry, time, with the babysitter than the real mother. She... Comes evening, home very tired. "How are you, my darling?" "So-so." "And clean?" "And this is okay." "Give eating quickly, it's already seven o'clock. Put her..." And again, there is another illness: that they don't put the child in the same room where they are sleeping. There is a separate room for the baby, and there are some instruments. If the baby is making a little noise, they can see on their computer screen. Because the camera is there, the baby is okay, and so on. But the baby doesn't need that camera. And this baby needs the warmth of the mother and father. That no machine can replace, and then they are going to the kindergarten, then they are going to the school, then they're going to school holidays, and so on and so forth, and you are separated from parents. And that's why people do not have more trust or love for their parents. So this is a situation in life. So how to change? How to live? If you marry, or you are married already, are you going to marry and decide to have children? Then please take care and give time for children, not for the money. One of the parents, at least, should stay with the children till they are 15, 16, 17, 18. That is a critical situation. Mostly, the children go and have the habits of the drugs. Because parents have no interest to be with the children at home, and when your child is nowadays at home at 10 years or 12, 13, parents say, "Why don't you go out? Today is Saturday, go to the pub or there." And then even parents don't like that children at home. What bad luck for the children. So we have to create a new generation. We have to create a healthy generation, and we have to give them that knowledge of being human. And so, this is a life situation. How to change is very easy. So Mahatma Gandhi said, be the change you want to see. So, how do you want to see the world or yourself? Change yourself; don't try to change others. And so, the situation in the world going on is, no one is guilty, only parents are guilty. So, tell your children also to have a happy life, happy, happy, happy. Stay at home, be with the parents, etc. So, āhāra, nourishment. Then, vihāra. Vihāra means where you go, where you should go, and where you should not go. For example, Australian beaches are very beautiful, long, and stretch for thousands of kilometers. But, you can't swim. You can't go in the water till your knees or waist or more, till your chest. Chest, okay, carefully till here, that is very careful and very good, but without anything, don't go two, three hundred meters deep, because sometimes there are certain creatures in the water, like we also would like to eat sometime ice cream or this, so there are sharks. We also would like to have some humans. So, Vihāra, where is our limitation? So in the night, don't go in the dark streets and like this. This can also create unnecessary trouble. Society is very important: āhāra, vihāra, ācāra. Ācāra means behavior. If you are nice to me, I will be nice to you. If you are nasty to me, I will be nasty to you. So if you want respect, then you should give respect. So, what we call, what is the difference between self-respect and ego? Self-respect is this: that our behavior, our dressing, everything should be in such a way that others accept it and they like it. Then they respect us. So in order to get respect, we have to respect ourselves and behave in such a way that others will say, "Yes, this is a nice person." And then the vichāra. Vichāra means thoughts. What you think, one day you will do like this? And therefore, having positive and good thoughts can change the situation of our life. So God has given us a physical body, a material body, to work out all our karmas. Though they are not visible, we can do it through our prayers, work, or anything. Only prayer is also not that which can help you. When we do the prayer, there must also be something. So, helping someone is more than prayer. We are walking on the footpath, and someone threw a beer bottle, and the glass is splintered there. That person has bad karma now. And now you are coming and you see, what are you doing? Carefully collect all glass pieces and put them to one side or in the bin. Because you didn't hurt your foot, you saw it. But you know that somebody else can be hurt by this glass. And not only humans, animals also, dogs also, cats also, possums also, kangaroos, birds, anyone. So, removing a few splintered glass pieces or some thorns, you are, or I, removing this from my future path. I'm cleaning up the thorns of my path, the obstacles. So, thinking, that's called vicāra. And if I will not think, I will say, "Ah, stupid people," throw the glass here, and walk away. This kind of thinking will not do good to us. We created the problems. So we can change the situation. There is one story from one man, that a horse rider. The king had a beautiful horse, a beautiful horse. And he would like to ride that horse, but the horse was so naughty, so wild, no one could jump on his back. And of course, every king will do only twice. The king can ride that horse the first time and the last time. The king gave the price: "Anyone who can train my horse, I will give this." In this price, many people came. They broke their bones, they broke their spines. The horse is very, very wild, but beautiful. And beautiful, and the king would like to have a ride on him. So one man came, and he said, "Okay, sir, I will train your horse, but it will take time." He said, "It doesn't matter." But no one could hold that horse. No one could put a rope around his neck. It was like a wild horse in a big farm. If a human comes, he runs away. So one man went. He went in the direction the horse went. The horse ran away, so he went behind and sat there. When the horse stopped, he stopped there. For one month, he just was near the horse, at a distance, sitting. This, this, and then he tried to take nice grass from under the bush, nice and green and so, and he made a little bundle and he threw it there. And then he went to some other bush, and the horse went and ate that grass. So it took him one month, and the horse was coming and eating grass. When man used to come, he ran away. It doesn't matter. After a few months, the first man was going behind the horse, but now the horse is going behind the man, where he's taking grass, and it was near. Man goes away, the horse goes behind. Then he sits near and he puts the grass, and he goes to the other tree. The horse comes, and he doesn't eat here. He goes there, where he is taking grass. So the horse becomes such a good friend of this man. It took him one and a half years to win the confidence. And then one day he disappeared, the man. The horse was running here and there, and he sees, "Where is that man?" Then he came far from the car, and they got out of the car, and he walked to the field about one kilometer distance. And you can't imagine how the horse was running to see him. And he came near, and that man was petting the shoulder of the horse, and he brought the horse some nice candies or grass. He's hanging on the neck of the horse, and he's massaging his back and so. And one day he sat on it, and the horse was happy. So for one and a half years, he trained the horse without any beatings or using force. And the horse came home, and he came to the king and said, "Sir, here is your horse. Now you can ride. He will not throw you down." So our mind is that horse, and where he is going, let him go, but observe. Let him not force. One day, this mild horse, our mind, will become so humble and kind that we can do good things and change the situation of our life. Āchāra, behavior; vichāra, the thoughts; vihāra, where to go and where not to go; and āhāra, the food—that is meant. So today this is enough. Now I think we have some questions. So you can have a few minutes free, stretch your legs, and then ask the questions, okay? You can do the Sarvahittāsana from your Yoga in Daily Life. You know the Sarvahittāsana? Oh yes, many. Stretch your legs? Yes. No? Let it on. So any posture which you like. Āṅkhiyāṁ Satguru caraṇome lagī. Dīpa dāyālu ke caraṇa kamala merī kiśmat jāgī, merī kiśmat jāgī. Āṅkhiyāṁ sāth guru nāme lāgī. Caraṇa dekhe bina chena nahīṁ āve, palaka na hove āgī. Caraṇa dekhe bina chena nahīṁ āve, palaka na hove āgī. Āṅkhiyāṁ Satguru, Satguru caraṇome lāgī, āṅkhiyāṁ Satguru caraṇome lāgī. Dīpadāyāluka caraṇa kamala, merī kismata jagī, merī kismata jagī. Āṅkhiyāṁ Satguru lāgī. Very good. So, again, finished your exercise slowly. And if you have any questions, ask me. Please come, come here. No, no, give me this loudspeaker, this stand also. Q: My question is about attachment. Attachment sometimes can hold, or holds me back, on my spiritual path. And, um, I suppose if you could shed some light on the nature of connection we should have with our family, um, friends, those kinds of people in our lives, and to our spiritual teachers and our master, the nature of those connections, and how we can not let attachment hold us back on our spiritual path. That would be wonderful. There is a good attachment, and there is a bad attachment. Good attachment is there where you feel free, where there are no conditions. Where you get understanding, love, respect, and harmony. Then there is good attachment. Negative attachment is where there are conditions, force, suffering, and many negative thoughts, the fear. Then this is not a positive attachment. So one man came and asked one question, the same about attachment. And he answered in two words only: break and join. He said, "What do you mean, break and join?" Break all unpleasant feelings, fear, force, etc., that you should break, relations. And join there where you feel happy, free, kind, respected, and developed. Attachment can grow ego, dominating sadness, and many, many things. That attachment is not healthy. But where is the happiness, joy, freedom? Then it is good. So attachment to the parents, even if you don't want it, it is and it should be. Blood is thicker than water. So what we call blood relation, your parents support you, and you should be kind and good to them. Even if we don't want attachment, we are. If our mother or father, grandfather, grandmother, brother, or sister dies, we are sad. But nowadays, not anymore, because of the babysitter, the child doesn't know who is your parent, who is your brother, and says, "Oh, my brother, okay." There is nothing. Human separated human. Even you are at home, you have your television. In television, few people can look. So you have laptop, you can go in your room. And when a room comes, your brother, sister sleeping there, then you have telephone in your pocket, you go in the toilet and sitting and making SMS. One is becoming, day by day, individual, and that's not good. This kind of technology has good and negative, both effect on the society. So attachment, where the love, there is a freedom, and where there is no love, there's attachment. And we should be attached to God. Q: In the last couple of days on the news, they interviewed a scientist from Brisbane who has created a titanium heart, and it has proven to work in sheep. They have taken the heart of the sheep out and put a titanium heart inside. They say within 10 years, this will be working for the human population, and other organs can be replaced with mechanical objects. How does this bode for our future as a human race? When the scientist was telling, I have to look, think on it. Then I can give you an answer. Q: My question, I'm sure, I'm hoping other people have the same one. Why do things take so long? Like this story about your horse, I suppose. Why don't you get a lesson within a week instead of ten years, for example? Because we need a long life. If everything happens just now, then life is gone. If we are self-realized just now, then we have no interest to live anymore. Live a long, happy, and joyful life, and sometimes it has its reason. A seed takes time to grow into a large tree. You have a beautiful mango seed. And now you put it in earth, and tomorrow you want to eat. You can eat that seed, but not the mangoes. So it has everything. It's time to grow, time to give up things, to clear up the mind. So take it easy in that way. Waiting time is most beautiful. Very intensive. Or do you have some particular question on a particular subject? Yeah. And we have a nice mango tree, and it is very, very nice. And we can give everybody a lot of water. But fruits will come only when the season comes. Q: Vishwagurujī, yesterday you were talking about yoga at home with the family. And you were talking about how often we are like popcorn. And I want to, I wonder if you can give some advice for not being popcorn with our family and being more yogic with our loved ones. Always think of forgiveness, and inside, tell where my limit is. So we shall act according to the limit. We lift our foot up to walk up the staircase. So the other foot, which is down on the step—unless our lifted foot is getting solid ground, we should not lift the other one. So one person remains safe. And sometimes there are situations, and there are some people. We can't tell anything, and we can't speak, so we should not become that corn which will pop up. But then we say, when a dog bites you, you can't bite the dog back. How? But you will say, "We shall take care of it." Yes? So there are some situations, like a dog bite. So, say, well, this dog is a little naughty. We should be careful. So, forgiveness can only be done by one who is great. There is a very nice written slogan from Nelson Mandela in the bathroom. But it is a man's bathroom that is written. I think this is especially for the men. It is very nicely written. And it is also, someone said, I think Āṇḍhījī said, "Only the weak one will attack you. The strong one will forgive. Ignorance will attack. Knowledge will not." Any more questions? It is very good. When people are in my presence, then all questions are cleared. Yeah, that's good. So we will have now a 10-minute interval, and then we will have a meditation, okay? So the webcast will be then in the evening. It's not announced. We will see when the webcast will be. All dear friends, today is a Sunday, and many have also... In Europe, it is morning, so we will see that this evening we can have a webcast again. Wish you all the best, and God bless you.
