Sanathan Dharma and Religion

Yoga is an ancient path predating all named religions. The eternal cosmic order, Sanātana Dharma, emphasizes harmony with nature and all beings, centered on one formless divine reality. This truth has been expressed through various divine messengers and incarnations across time, each giving rise to different religious traditions based on their teachings and example. All authentic paths share core universal principles.

The highest principle is non-violence—avoiding harm to any creature through thought, word, or deed. This includes not stealing, which extends beyond material theft to taking intellectual or emotional property. True spirituality involves selfless service, love for all neighbors in creation, and inner purification. Religious forms and formless worship are both valid; the form is a support leading to the formless. The essence of religion is recognizing our eternal relation to the divine, which dwells equally in all life.

The weekend retreat was very successful, and the information you received consists of very authentic and ancient teachings. Yoga is very, very old. When Yoga was introduced, there were no other religions. What you call Hinduism also did not exist by that name. Of course, Christianity was not present at all. The oldest tradition is the Hindu, but the name 'Hindu' was given by the British. Before that, it was Sanātana Dharma, which means the cosmic religion, the cosmic rules, or to follow nature, protect nature, and protect other creatures—to live in harmony with nature and all beings. Sanātana Dharma and Hinduism believe only in one God. That is called Brahman. Brahman has no form. It is only what we call God, the energy. But in human forms, many, many humans were born with the miracles and powers of God. They introduced what God is. If they were not here, we would not learn what God is. So those who were born with this divine energy, miracles, and performed seva (service) for all, we gave the name 'god' to them as well. Following this, some people declared it as a religion. The teaching of the Vedas was the first and was taught neutrally. All the ceremonies and rituals were for the protection of this earth, the protection of the animals, and the protection of ourselves—to protect oneself and to live in peace. After many ages, centuries, and eras, some great holy persons came, some great sacred persons arrived. Let us say God Rāma. What Rāma spoke, people believed him as a god. Or Kṛṣṇa. People believed Kṛṣṇa as a god. So they declared their religion. Similarly, when Jesus came, what he spoke to his disciples, they call Christianity. Similarly, with the Jews—theirs is also a very old religion where they believe just in a formless God; they have no statues. But light in Parsi... this was the, I think, religion coming after the prophet. They also have only the candle, light. And Hinduism also, they had only light. But when there is Kṛṣṇa or Rāma, or Jesus, we saw them, we remember their form, so we adore the form. That is called Mūrti Pūjā. Mūrti means statue. In other forms, like old Hinduism (Sanātana Dharma), the Jewish, and the Islam, they do not worship the statue. They seek Nirguṇa God. But the Prophet Muhammad, what he spoke... So whatever Muhammad spoke, that book is known as the holy book, the Qur’ān. That is why it is called a man religion, because the message is given by a human. Jesus also was born human, so it is called a man-made religion. Kṛṣṇa was also born as a human. So-called man-made religion? The Buddha was a Hindu. He was a prince, and after his enlightenment, what he spoke is called Buddhism. Buddha was not a name; Buddha—he was Prince Siddhārtha. Bodha means knowledge. Bodha means intellect. We call it Buddhi, mind and intellect. But when this Buddhi, this intellect, was enlightened—it means God, real knowledge—so the intellect is enlightened, so buddha, that is called an enlightened soul. So from Siddhārtha, he became Buddha. Now, the Buddha’s religion, this is the knowledge which was written and spoken by the Buddha, Siddhārtha. So they call it the Buddha religion, Buddhism. The Buddha was very simple. When Buddha was walking, he always was looking down so that he would not step on any creature, that no creature should be killed through him, to maintain spiritual life. They used to live outside of the village or city where the civilization is, where there are many temptations. So, to avoid the temptation and have peace, they used to live in the forest. Buddha spent time under one tree and had a little grass hut. And they called him a bhiḳṣuk, a monk. Go for food. They were not cooking for themselves, so they were going to get food from the village. And Buddha’s principle was: "Go only to four houses." Five houses. He always went to ask for food at only five houses. If nobody gave, only four or five houses, and whatever he got, he put it all in his one pot—maybe yogurt, vegetables, rice, fruits, everything in one pot. Then he came back to his hut or ashram, and he divided it into five parts: food. One part for the guest. If no guest, then for the birds; the second part is for the dog, the dogs, or some other animals. The third part is for the fish. And the fourth part was for the little creatures, the ants. And the fifth, for himself. This is how to purify the food. When you share with others, what remains becomes pure for you. Of course, vegetarian. Buddha never, never ate meat. Even he did not want to step on the animals. So it is not real teachings. What in the world? People are saying themselves as a Buddha, Buddhist, but they are eating meat. There are some books written: Jesus was also vegetarian, and he said, "Don’t eat those who have the eyes, because these eyes are the eyes of God. God sees because your inner self is God, and He sees through the eyes, so don’t kill them, don’t eat them." Also, some people tell that Mohammed was also vegetarian. So the God-realized, or God’s messengers, they were holy and vegetarian. They said one thing: when there is nothing to eat, no fruits, no roots, no herbs, in that case, to survive as a human, you may eat the animal meat which naturally dies, not to kill. At that time, human population was less. Many Buddhist countries, if you go to Bangkok, and there are a few other countries more... Every man has to go through this as a monk life in Burma. There, you know, they have to go for some years as a monk, going for the food, the big soup. So, all the religions are very good, that people can adopt something. But they say, if you adore pictures or a statue, there is no life in it. But it is your faith; you manifest life in them. When the statue gets inaugurated, then people believe it has a life inside. So, Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gītā, in the 12th chapter on Bhakti Yoga, asked God Kṛṣṇa, "God, what is the best? To worship a formless God, impersonal, or a personal God?" Kṛṣṇa said, both are good, both are the same, but for the human, for their intellect, for their indriyas, they want to see something, so they can worship this form. That will automatically lead you to the formless. So every religion has beautiful principles, and one should believe in that divine light. It is said, it is called ahiṃsā. Ahiṃsā means non-violence. Ahiṃsā paramo dharma: the highest principle, dharma, is nonviolence. Do not torture anyone. Do not trouble anyone. So, hiṁsā means violence, and ahiṁsā means non-violence. In this, violence is physical, emotional, intellectual, mental, social, etc. Also, to the forest, unnecessarily don’t cut the tree. So there are many, many principles that only humans can understand, and they can follow. If you believe in God, then be sure that after death you will be questioned. There may be a big list of questions, and in this list is written with thick letters, "Have you been doing violence?" And then, in this violence, did you steal the things? And stealing is not only physical material. The intellectual property, emotional property, and the natural property, and money, etc. So, what have you stolen? Only taking money away, or someone’s car taken away, that’s not so bad. Of course, it is bad, but you will survive. But to steal some emotional things, that is more painful. So when you steal something, you are happy, but you cause pain and sadness to others because it was others’ property. That my neighbor has a beautiful, good house, and I wish them a happy time, so be human. We have a very weak, our weakness: we like something only for some time. Then you look at others’ plates, that’s better. And this is also stealing. So, the so-called Ten Commandments in Christianity, "Thou shalt not steal," and stealing in everything. Now people are stealing very much intellectual property. One designs a nice telephone, and it comes on the market. In a few days, someone will imitate and take this technology and make it their own. This is stolen intellectual property, so it is protected, but people are very clever, putting another point and saying, "No, but our technique is like that." Yoga is pure yoga, but people begin to create this yoga, that yoga, that yoga. It became commercial, and that’s not good. Because humans have their own ego, it should be known by my name, and it should be my market, my property. So that is why that kind of practice of yoga cannot lead you to perfection. Now, mostly people are doing yoga for losing weight and torturing the body. That’s also a hiṃsā. To give trouble to your body is a hiṃsā. Love your body. Your body would like gentleness. So the yoga was that time when Śiva manifested himself as a swayambhū. First was the sound, then was the light, then it manifested in human form, and he was sitting in meditation. And so went this, that time yoga. That’s why Śiva is known as a yogī, Yogendra. And the science of yoga is given by Śiva. It was given by Śiva. All mantras, all prayers, all knowledge, everything is given to humans by Lord Śiva Mahādeva. Śiva’s holy seat was on the mountain Kailāśa in the Himālaya, which is now in the China territory. So, at that time when Śiva came, and of course then continued... The generations, so the Himalayan king, every king of the Himalaya range, was known as King Śiva. So Śiva was the king of the Himalaya. And the last king, some centuries before, they killed the king Shiva, and the Buddhists took over. And so they put the monk, the Buddhist monk, on that holy chair. They called the lama, and they started to call him lama. So now the last one is called Dalai Lama. Actually, that position, the seat, belongs to Śiva. Originally, this position or this sacred seat is of Śiva, but Śiva doesn’t mind. For him, all humans are the same. He doesn’t believe... Śiva doesn’t say this religion, that religion. The teaching and the story of Śiva is great. Now there is one video film called Devakādev Mahādev. I don’t know if it is translated in Spanish. It would be good. So when the divine soul comes, God quality... God doesn’t make any differences. God loves all. That’s why he said, "Thou shalt not kill." He does not say, "Do not kill the humans." And if he said, "Don’t kill the humans," then why are we killing the humans? Why do we have war? Why do you produce the weapons? So if you are a Christian, you are not entitled to take any arms in your hands. When Jesus said, "Thou shalt not kill," he was a follower of ahiṃsā, non-violence. Jesus did not even show violence himself towards others. When they were crucifying him, he was not fighting physically against them, and he did not curse anyone, you see. So if I’m a Christian, then I should not take the weapons, not produce the weapons, and not give the weapons to the enemy to fight a war. In a war, who is killed? Humans. So no, no. Any God, incarnation, or great holy soul will not make differences in religion and will not fight and tell, "Kill them." That’s it. So, love your next one. Who is the next one? Your husband, your wife, your children, your friends. Jesus doesn’t need to tell you to love your wife. You love your wife, or your wife loves you. No need for Jesus to tell you to go and love now. Next to you, all creatures, those are not killed. Love your neighbors. So not neighbors only, but love your next one. And if it is a neighbor, the ants are also our neighbor. The ants have a birthright to live in your house. They were born in your house. You were not born in that house. You were born somewhere else. You bought the house and came into the house. So ants say, "Oh, welcome to my house." But what do we do? We spray the poison. So when we talk, love is God and God is love. Then what is God’s love? God’s love is not emotional love. God’s love is love for all his creatures. Love the trees, the herbs, the forest, the rivers, the ocean. It is his divine creation. That time, when you have such a consciousness, then you will feel now you are spiritual. So these ten commandments, which you have in the Bible, are coming from the great yogī saint Patañjali. Patañjali was some centuries before Christ. And in the Yoga Sūtra, Patañjali’s book, Patañjali writes or he puts together all systems of yoga in four parts: Bhakti yoga, the devotion; karma yoga, the seva, service. Karma yoga, service, sevā. If you see the monastery, a Christian temple, how many nurses are helping, working? How many monks are they helping? That is a seva. Seva is the highest religion. Help the needy one. Help those who have pain. Show the way to those who are lost. Dry their tears. Don’t cause them any pain. That’s it. So, seva, helping, Karma Yoga. Then comes the Rāja Yoga. And this Rāja Yoga has the eight principles, eight steps: Yama, Niyama, Āsana, Prāṇāyāma, Pratyāhāra, Dhāraṇā, Dhyāna, and Samādhi. These are the eight steps of the yoga called the Rāja Yoga. Rāja means the king. And the king must follow the principles, the rules. And which principles? The ten principles of yama and niyama. The principles of yama and niyama: ahiṃsā, don’t steal, don’t lie, etc. There are exactly ten points given by Patañjali. I told you yesterday, Patañjali is the father of psychology. So, in the Quran it is written, if you kill one human, you have killed all humanity. You see, what writes the holy books? We should read and understand. That book, the Quran, is a path for us to walk. The Bible is a path for us to walk. All Vedas, all holy books, the Bhagavad Gītā, the Rāmāyaṇa—this is all a guidance for us. So this life is a journey, not a destination. Therefore, yoga doesn’t speak about religion. They speak religion only, after which they say religion. The definition of religion, God Kṛṣṇa is telling in the 15th chapter of Bhagavad Gītā. What is the, what means the religion? God Kṛṣṇa said, I live in all creatures. I dwell in all that is life. There I am Jīva Bhūta Sanātana, because all these creatures are my relatives, are my self, are my essence. Like your son, you will say, "This is my son, my blood relative." So God says, all creatures, animals, little creatures, birds, humans, they are all my children. And this all, they are sanātana. Sanātana means relation, so God and God’s creation. Sanātana so relation, so from relation becomes religion. So we are related to God; we are children of God, and God loves us equally. But we do wrong things; therefore, meditation will give you the answers. So don’t blame any religion. All religions are the best, but what people misunderstand and don’t follow, these principles, for them religion is only a rubber stamp. So, did you see any weapons in the hand of Jesus? Did he give the weapons to anybody? Even his mother didn’t fight. You know, that’s it. And if you see the pain, more than Jesus was suffering, the Holy Mother Mary, how was her life? When she declared that she’s pregnant, people were very against, they didn’t want her in the house. Joseph was married. He supported her. What was her mental and physical condition? Had she no house? Why did she give birth to the child in an animal’s stable? No one was there. That part is not written. Only she knows what pain she had. And when Jesus was crucified, what was the pain of the mother? No one supported her. It was she who was sitting under the cross, very exhausted, finished. She leaned her head to the cross, and blood drops are falling on her. What is the pain of that mother? But she also didn’t curse anyone. So I told you yesterday, you remember? Mother knows her pain. So you see, because they follow the path of a god, not to harm anyone. If you kill in the name of religion, people or animals, it’s not in the sense of God. So we believe in God in that way. We believe in religion that way. Not to cause pain to anyone, and so yoga helps everyone. You become very healthy, and you realize inner peace. You can bring the peace to the world. There is no way to peace, Gandhijī said, but peace is the way. So with that peace, if we go, we become the messenger of God. So yoga awakes our inner light, that inner God, that inner Jesus will awaken you. The Kṛṣṇa will appear in you. All goddesses are one. Only the uniform is different. That’s it. So practice yoga. Practice your mantras. Meditate and pray. Prayer is the best remedy for everything. Whenever you feel scared, then pray. When you don’t see any way out, you should pray. So prayer is our strength, but prayer is universal. The Vedas give the prayer, a peace prayer. Peace on the earth, peace in the water, peace in the air, peace in the sky, peace in the Brahman, and peace in me. Peace everywhere, that’s it. So, first you pray for others. When others are in peace, then automatically we are in peace. Surrounding us is only bombing and fighting, killing. And there is no peace, and you sit in your house: "I have peace." How long? So when all are in peace, automatically you will have peace. Therefore, first pray for the enemy; bring love and peace to them. The France from Assisi, he said, "Where there is no peace, may I bring the peace. Where there is misery, sorrow, may I bring love." So, may I bring that message to all and love you. This is all we know, you and me, but we are afraid of what other people will say. They say, "You are not depending on them." How long of a life do you have now? More than half of life is gone. It’s afternoon already. And it would be a pity if we die as we are. So, as humans, we have our destination with God, to be one with God. Don’t divide. Humans divide the earth. Humans divide the borders. Humans divide the caste. Etc., etc., etc. But God did not divide. But humans divide God. This is your God, this is my God. Oh human, what do you want to divide now? More? God doesn’t divide; He’s one. So, wish you all the best, and tomorrow, satsaṅg. So, if you have any questions, bring the questions, and tomorrow will be questions and answers in webcast.
