The best way to good health is Yoga

Yoga is a vital science for health in this age, responding to threats against nature, culture, and well-being. Its global acceptance shows its practical benefits. The ancient ṛṣis researched life through proper nourishment, movement, and breath. Modern science understands breath but not the ten prāṇas, the subtle life forces that yogis discovered. Prāṇa is not mere energy or oxygen; it is life itself. Success comes from saṅkalpa, a firm resolve or Icchā Śakti, combined with the power of action, Kriyā Śakti. Obstacles will arise, but one must not change the target. This willpower, supported by the prāṇas, achieves what seems impossible. The ṛṣis worked for all humanity, not themselves. Yoga is the step-by-step science of mastering body, breath, mind, intellect, consciousness, and finally the Self.

"Tons of theory are nothing compared to the grammar of practice."

Devīśvara Mahādeva, Dharmachamratā Satguru Svāmī Madhvālanjī Bhagavān, Satya Sanātana Dharma. Om Namaḥ Śrī Prabhu Dīpa Nārāyaṇa. Good evening. Dobrý večer. Our yoga teacher seminar is progressing successfully. You see how happy you are. We are engaged in research, and day by day we discover talents. It was a great surprise that our honorable Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Modi, at a conference in Brisbane attended by ministers and government members from across the world, proposed why we should not celebrate a day of yoga, to be announced by the United Nations. On that same day, over 100 countries immediately agreed. Within two weeks, I think 172 or 176 countries accepted, and the rest joined later. This means that in those countries, there are many, many practitioners of yoga. This is a response to a threat against our nature, culture, and human health. Nature and vegetation are in danger, cultures are being lost, and our health deteriorates daily. The positive results are reported by people from all walks of life—business people, farmers, individuals of various professions—who have gained great benefit through yoga. You cannot imagine how many people practice yoga, not necessarily in centers but at home, having learned, with the whole family practicing. It is unbelievable. Why? Because they achieved good results and benefits. Many companies support this business. Consider only yoga mats—how many millions of dollars? Only the neti pot. The many items we need for practice, like dresses, amount to billions of dollars worldwide. Some people do not go anywhere without their yoga mat. I saw in Australia people going biking with their yoga mat on their back like a backpack. Thus, yoga in this age is one of the best ways to good health. There was a time for quick walking, but after a few years, it damaged hip joints. Many problems arise from wrong movements. For the last few years, I walked with two sticks, and it damaged my wrists and shoulders. Yoga is very safe and must be practiced. "Yoga in Daily Life" is declared as our motto: for physical, mental, social, and spiritual health. Now, you are a Yoga in Daily Life teacher. If you are ill, no one is to blame but ourselves. It is said, practice makes a master. As I often say, tons of theory are nothing compared to the grammar of practice. This is the work of the great ṛṣis—hermits who lived in forests in natural huts. At that time, one immortal entity was not born: our ātmā is immortal. But another immortal came into the world: plastic. Plastic is immortal now. We cannot destroy it; even if burned, it remains plastic, permanently damaging our health. We have become very dependent. Once, Father David from Adelaide and I said together, "We say no to plastic." Later, Father David had a sudden stomach injury, his stomach burst, and he underwent plastic surgery. He called me and said, "Swāmījī, I can’t say no to plastic." So, for certain things, it is necessary, but plastic bottles, bags, and polythene items damage our planet's health. The ṛṣis of India lived at a time when Europe was under ice; it was more open in the Himalayas, while other parts were under water or glaciers. These ṛṣis made a resource—that is why they are called ṛṣi, from 'resource'. ṛṣi means holy saint. 'Ṛṣikeśa' also comes from ṛṣi and is one of the names of Kṛṣṇa. Their research was great. To live long and healthy, they conducted many experiments on proper nourishment, movement, and breath. I have had this paper in my hand for five days, only reading the first page. Now I come to these pages. Can you read it? I cannot. What is it? Prāṇas. "Prāṇas"? Can you read the second line? Oh my God, he must have been a ṛṣi in his last life. Nowadays, medical science has researched and developed much, but it still cannot understand these ten prāṇas. They may accept them but cannot explain them. They know inhalation and exhalation, but not prāṇa. They know gas in the stomach and gastric problems, but not these ten prāṇas that yogīs discovered—how the body functions through the science of prāṇa. Prāṇa is not energy, not oxygen, not the breath. It is a vast subject. About 20-25 years ago, at Swami Vivekananda University in Bangalore, the dean and founder Dr. Nagendra—a scientist and former leading director of a NASA center in America who worked on the first rocket to the moon—left his job. He knew that through yoga, the scientists and astronauts who practiced survived and succeeded. Russian scientists and champions worldwide practice yoga successfully. Physical strength is limited, but mental strength is powerful, and that mental power leads to success. When you decide something and make a saṅkalpa, we call it Icchā Śakti. Kriyā Śakti is the action. For a champion or anyone, it is that willpower that brings success. This is Icchā Śakti—'icchā' meaning wish. Make your decision, your saṅkalpa: what you wish to achieve. Then, do not change it. Many obstacles will come—āsurī śaktis that bring confusion, backbiting, blackmail, temptations. These are obstacles on our path. Target your saṅkalpa: "I want to achieve this," and work on it. One day brings disappointment, the next great happiness. In both situations, carry on. Your concentration (śrutā) should always be directed that way, and your work (kriyā) will be successful. I experienced this through a great experiment, and I hope I am already succeeding with your help. How did you come here? It was also my saṅkalpa—to build strength on that road. Imagine a tiny bird that says, "I will lift this Trilokī hill and fly." Can this bird lift that hill? Or, can you pull twenty elephants through a needle's eye? Bring me an elephant, and I will show you. I can pull it in no time. Would you trust me? You have to bring the elephant. It is possible. That tiny bird can lift this hill if it has that saṅkalpa, that Icchā-Śakti and Kriyā-Śakti, and these ten prāṇas. Prāṇa is life. One day, I was like that little bird with the imagination to lift the hill. Nearly, it is lifted. When I said, "I will lift this hill," people smiled. On my first visit to America, I sat with the ambassador in Washington—a fine gentleman and disciple—and told him. He said, "Great idea." I asked, "Will you help me?" "Of course." To lift that mountain, I traveled to India and elsewhere; many devotees said, "Yes, Swāmī." But I had my Icchā Śakti. My aim, my saṅkalpa, my vision is to first think what you want, then make a plan, and work it out. That was Om Aśram. Can you compare from 39 or 40 years ago? I am still that little bird, lifting it through your help. Now you come and see. This is a symbol to keep ancient spiritual culture alive. You know, all walls are made of special bricks. Which bricks are they? All of you are there as bricks, for ages and ages. So, Kriyā Śakti is at work, trying very hard, and Icchā Śakti is there. Who made the saṅkalpa? Whatever you wish to achieve, do not give up. If you practice for ten years and then change your path, forget about achieving your goal. Change the way if you must, but in this life, forget completion. If lucky, you might complete it in the next life. Thus, Icchā Śakti, Kriyā Śakti, Dhyāna Śakti, and Yoga Śakti together, supported by these prāṇas, lead to success. If you show ego, the hill will drop. So, do it as Śiva, as a servant. A bird builds a beautiful nest not out of pride but to protect her babies. This is how the ṛṣis set their targets. They had willpower, practiced, experimented, and had time. Uma Purī showed me her book describing Khecharī Mudrā: the tongue must reach the Ājñā Chakra, then you close your nose, and the hair stands—a successful Khecharī Mudrā. But not only will it be successful, you will successfully die. This was not by a grand ṛṣi; someone did it like that. If your time comes, it must be so long—you have to measure. Some people introduce bugs, knowing it will never happen, so let them try. But the ṛṣis were great. Yoga is the science of how to live life and cure disease. But we have no practice; all our śaktis are without śakti. Consider our food: in one life, a person consumes over 80 tons of food—good breakfast, junk food, dinner, coffee, cakes, night parties, solid food. If we put 80 tons here, it would break down. Yet, we are not full. This is a wonder: we feed from above, and it drips out below. What should the master do? The ṛṣis' nourishment was prāṇa. A few leaves were enough to sustain meditation. It was not easy. Ādhibhautik, Ādhidaivik, and Ādhyātmik—these three tapas existed then too: dangers from animals and creatures, illnesses, problems with neighbors, and mental illness. But they could master these three tapas. Some people wonder why Swāmījī is building this āśram, Om Aśram, thinking it is ego. Will ego die before? Do you think I will always live in Omāśram? I am not a ghost. I will live there in the prāṇa. Those ṛṣis did not work only for themselves but for generations, for all humanity. That is yoga. Yoga is the science of body, mind, and consciousness, to free the soul into the ātmā. So, practice. You have yoga; use it or lose it. Therefore, do not be afraid. No breakfast, no lunch—I do not exist anymore, so try. Gain your strength, your prāṇa. Perfect. If we cannot master āsanas, how will we master prāṇāyāma? If we cannot master prāṇāyāma, how will we master the mind? If we cannot master the mind, how will we master our intellect? If we cannot master our intellect, how will we master our consciousness? And then, how will we master our Self, the Ātmā? Step by step. Tomorrow, yoga is born in you. Take care of this baby. Alright, those who are not yoga teachers and just came for the seminar have to suffer with it—meaning they have to eat a lot. That is called Mānas Bhojan. They will be guided by our Turīyānand from Turīān and Ludiek. He will guide those who are new or have injuries or extra kilos. Others who can perform all āsanas—Paścimottānāsana, Cakrāsana, Dhanurāsana, Sarvāṅgāsana, Śīrṣāsana, Vṛścikāsana, etc.—will be in Nepal. The other two groups will be in Ganga House and Sangam Hall, as the majority will be here. If the majority is here, they can go to the other hall. What I wish to convey is that the world has accepted yoga as the best way of life. You cannot imagine how many people in high posts at the United Nations practice yoga daily, along with many doctors and others. Compared to them, we are a small group. They practice at home. So, this is it. All the best. Om Śānti. Hari Om.
