Swara and Nada yoga

The Supreme manifests as resonance. Svara Yoga is the science of mastering the flow of breath through the nostrils to unite individual consciousness with cosmic consciousness. This discipline requires pure diet and reduces bodily toxins through control of prāṇa and apāna. The entire universe is sound; by mastering this Nāda through sattvic living and specific techniques, one can achieve astral travel beyond material existence. Our physical manifestation begins as a resonant drop, and every cell in the body is charged by environmental resonance, positive or negative. This resonance influences all bodily systems and health. Chakras function like dynamos, generating energy through movement and resonance. The practice involves dynamic movement, stretching, and postures. Ultimately, sound is the means of union with the Supreme, and through understanding sacred words and resonance, one can attain darśana and cross the ocean of illusion. The goal is to purify the chakras and nāḍīs so the soul may exit through the tenth door, the Sahasrāra, to Brahmaloka, which requires the Guru's grace obtained through understanding his words, service, and blessing. The seed of sound resides in the navel, manifesting as three levels: parā, paśyantī, and vaikharī. Chanting Oṁ awakens this sound, which travels through the central channel to purify all layers of being and create a protective enlightenment.

"Through the sound you give, through the sound you receive, through the words, the sound you are together, through the sound you are happy, through the sound is yoga."

"Your body is nothing but a resonance. Every blood cell has immense resonance."

Part 1: The Science of Sound and Resonance We are still speaking about sound. That form of the Supreme is also as a resonance. We were talking about Svara Yoga, how to master the signs of the Svara. Unfortunately, we didn’t come to the end. Perhaps on your next trip or next week. It’s a very complete science. It’s unbelievable how it can function and you can achieve such things, which are nearly impossible. But, there is always a but. It needs lots of discipline. It needs a lot of attention. This is a science of the flow of the three nāḍīs. It means how to hook our consciousness with the cosmic consciousness, so that the worldly activities, our worldly way of living, these guṇas—Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas—then do not influence us. You are doing, but you are not doing. You are not doing, but you are doing. So this is a very direct way. Naturally, it requires a very pure way of diet. You remember, yesterday I spoke about prāṇa and apāna, that in the body there are lots of toxins. To reduce the toxins from the body, we need apāna śakti, apāna prāṇa. Apāna prāṇa is when we exhale. When we inhale, it’s prāṇa. You know what it means for us to inhale and exhale. Without this, we cannot exist. So it’s very deep, the science: when to go to sleep, which nostril should flow. A whole night when you sleep, if you sleep and you turn to the other side, then the other nostril is flowing, so you lost it. So, for example, the whole night, only the sun should still flow. So, for your body it is night, but for your consciousness it is day; your consciousness doesn’t sleep. Early morning, during Brahmamuhūrta, on different days, different nāḍīs should flow: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. These days are divided according to Svara Yoga and astrology. It means "proved." For example, Monday belongs to the moon day. So on Monday, the moon should be dominating. And how long? And when to change? In the beginning, you will be completely exhausted. It takes three years to settle yourself in this. The people who practice daily yoga and daily life, especially the prānāyāma and meditation according to yoga and daily life, for them this science would be easier. This is a very highly developed technique and very direct. Of course, there should be no tamas guṇa. Of course, there should be food taken care of. So the apāna śakti we need, but what comes with apāna vāyu, the toxins, the gases, we shall take such a diet that it doesn’t produce that much gas in the body. So, the Svara Yoga is very much connected with the Nāda Yoga. Nāda is a sound. So sound and the flow of the Svara, Svara means which nostril is flowing. And svara also means the notes for music. You know, notes. We call Sā Re Gā Mā Pā Dhā Nī Ṣā. I don’t know what you say. I never learned anything. When my teacher said, "Learn," I said, "Why?" So he said, "Okay." So I came only to the Sāre Gāma Pāda Nīsā. And Sāre Gāma Pāda Nīsā, that’s all. Anyhow, nāda, sound. So the entire universe is the sound. As far as you go, that intensive nāda sound begins. You have to go several thousand kilometers away from the earth, away from the moon, and then meditate there. Oh, that’s Nāda Oṁ. It is indescribable. There, you can only go with your astral body. With the physical body, it’s not possible, but if you meditate, and you practice this Svara Yoga, and you master the Nāda, and the sattvic way of life, perfection of the Khecarī Mudrā, means the Kriyā, Śaṅkha Prachalan Kriyā, then it can happen that you are capable of astral traveling. So, when you go far, then there is no sound of any material sound. All materials are left behind. There are no particles in space. And there is the sound of the Self, the sound of emptiness. It is empty, but it is not empty. It is completely filled. What there is is not a science. And what is there? Is there nothing? Science said yes, there is something. So this is not the modern science explanation, but yogic. That is Brahmaloka. There. Then, that sound is the sound of yourself, so humbling. Nāda. So, our manifestation, our entering into this physical world, coming first in touch with the physical world, is in the form of a drop. You know, the water is round. Everything is round. Everything, every atom is round, because the universe is round. And that’s why our globe is also round. When you stay on the beach, stand on the beach, and about five kilometers or three kilometers or ten kilometers far, you see on the horizon of the ocean or the sea a little part of the ferry, the ship, coming up. Slowly, slowly climbing up, coming up, no? This can, people from the Adriatic coast know better, no? Or, who live on the beach, so it means that it’s also going like this, down. And that’s why Swāmī Vivekānanda, he got an invitation 125 years ago to Chicago for the World’s Parliament of Religions, and they sent the invitation to India to the Mahārāja of Mysore. Maharishi Mahārāj, Maheśvara, not Mysuru, like Bengal, Bangla, Rajasthan, Mysuru, and Maharaja sent Swāmī Vivekānanda, all got already subject, and suddenly they say there is some Indian also here, but subject should be given, nothing remains. So he said, "Yes, I’m very happy you give me zero." And he spoke about zero. Everyone opened their eyes. That time he explained about zero, the entire universe is zero. Every atom is zero. You know that we had a big problem with mathematics, but it was the Indians who solved all the problems by adding a zero in mathematics. Otherwise, we were counting like children, making one, two, three lines. So, zero solved all problems. So, it is said in the Vedas, Hiraṇya Garbha, a golden womb, a golden embryo. So, first time, when you are coming to the mother’s body, you come in contact with this; your coming is with the sound. If there is no proper resonance, the mother will not be successful. She can’t give the fruit, so it is that resonance which is balancing. And it is that resonance which connects you with the mother body. And then all the organs, all the systems, all the muscles, all the bones and joints and glands, all the functions, the brain and so on, are formed and manifested through that resonance. Your body is nothing but a resonance. Every blood cell has immense resonance. When that cell comes into the positive environment in the body, it means good food, good air, and a good environment outside, then our blood cells are charged, loaded with positive energy. If this resonance is negative, it means the environment, at home, in school, at work, or with friends, and the societies, that resonance and food and the liquid, then the healthy resonance is damaged and it takes negative vibration. Like you put a filter in front of your lens in the camera. Similarly, whatever kind of resonance you receive, your blood cells are charged with that energy. Therefore, when you smile, when you laugh, it’s happiness. If you are happy, often they used to say in Austrian newspapers, nearly about three years there was a continuous saying, a little joke: "Who laughs with leaves long?" or "Who laughed with long leaves?" And there was then down some joke. So when you read the newspaper, you were laughing. So once I was sitting in Austrian Airlines, flying to Hamburg, and they were distributing newspapers, and suddenly about twenty people said, "Ha ha..." I said, "My God, what’s happening?" Because they all read the same joke at the same time. So, and you can’t imagine, the whole aeroplane atmosphere was different. Because someone was laughing, how stupid are they? Okay, even he thinks they are stupid, and he will begin to laugh. So I brought you laughing. So I came to Hamburg, and I told them. That time I had one disciple, she was a very good photographer, her name was Herma. And I told this, she said, "It’s very hard to bring the Hamburg people laughing." Nothing can bring them. They are always so cold. This is my coffee. It’s not my coffee. I said, I don’t think like this. The Hamburgs are good people. She said, "If you want to see the Hamburgs, people are laughing." I’m smiling. Then bring one dog. Then he will say, "My God, look how sweet." You see, there he said, this is a very good point, a very good point. So, someone is happy in something. Happy. Someone is happy in something, and someone is happy in something. They are happy where they concentrate or where they like something. So one is happy with the dog, and one is happy with the car. Or one is happy with different things, or with a wife or husband. And one is happy in meditation, and one is happy with golf playing. And one is happy while walking in the forest. One is happy when one can swim, and one is happy if one can go to a sauna. And one is happy when one goes to the cinema. So everyone has their own quality. Everyone has that quality, they find somewhere, so koī kahīṁ me, someone in something, koī kahome, koī kahome, someone in something, someone in something, koī kahome magane, koī kahome magane, jiskī lagī lagan, so where one is fixed, there he is happy. One is looking at the video, and he’s smiling. And other people say, "What’s happening?" But he’s happy in this little. You know, this is called Bluetooth for the earphone. And one day I was talking and walking through the park. It’s called Prater Garten in Vienna, and nothing was in the hands. Walking free. I was sitting and I was talking, and then I said, "Ha ha ha, really good." There were sitting three old ladies, and one lady said to the other, "He is talking so loud with himself, so, ‘Koī Kahu Me Magane, Koī Kahu Me Magane’..." Therefore, the certain vibration that influences our blood cells, and those blood cells influence our entire system in the body—the digestive system, gland functions, heart, liver, brain—everything is healthy. That’s the way to become healthy, so not only that you eat healthy, but we call it live healthy. Live healthy means not only drink and eat, but how mentally you are. So it is that resonance which is constantly resonating in the body, and there are positive and negative waves. And our chakras in the body, which have a big responsibility, our chakras are like a dynamo. The dynamo, when it’s turning, produces energy. And when it’s not turning, it doesn’t produce energy. When the dynamo is not turning, and you see that dynamo, you don’t see energy inside. There’s no energy. You can touch, no current, but as soon as the dynamo begins to turn, energy is there. From where does that energy come? That energy is not dormant inside, but that energy is produced and drawn from the universe into the movement, into the movement, in this turning, that resonance. And touch, the touching, opposite touching, that’s called dynamic movement. In yoga, there are three exercises: dynamical movement. First, this means body warming exercise. So, one, two, this is a dynamic movement. Up and down, up and down, the body is warming. Second, stretching, which helps our muscles to develop and improves circulation, and third, postures. So, you should do first dynamic movement, then stretching, and then postures. Postures mean you can comfortably stay long in that position. Do it concentrated for three weeks. Your body will be completely different. But we have to do it. Don’t be lazy like me. I think I’m very lazy, but you know, it’s not easy to be lazy. It is art. Because when you are lazy, someone loves you. But generally, no one loves you if you are lazy. So you have to be lazy in a very nice way. That’s it. So these are the three which support our body. So there is one bhajan from Brahmānandajī. Slogan. Swāmījī Śivānandajī, disciple of Mahāprabhujī, wrote this bhajan.... Those who understand the words, they are my caste people. They are my family people. They are my relatives. My relatives are those who understand the words, the sound. Oran Aave Mere Dai, Dai Mari Heli. Others I don’t like because they don’t understand. So, sound. And then, everything in a little, I can tell that through the sound you give, through the sound you receive, through the words, the sound you are together, through the sound you are happy, through the sound is yoga. Yoga is the sound. And this technique, yukti, is yoga. And through the sound, you are united with the Supreme. It is that sound through which you can have dīdhar of Mahāprabhujī. "Dīdhar" is an Urdu word in the Parsi language. Dīdār means the light, the sign of God. Part 2: The Resonance of Nāda and the Path to Brahmaloka Through that sound, that resonance, and the understanding of those words, you can have darśana of Mahāprabhujī. Through that sound and resonance, Swami Sivananda said, you can cross the ocean of this world, this māyā. Nāda. Therefore, the resonance is in the whole. The chakras are those dynamos. Most of all, they are in a perfect state of balance, sleeping perfectly. So the dynamo is switched off. It is not active, and it is good that some dynamos are not active. But the problem is that those dynamos which should not be active are active: Mūlādhāra and Svādhiṣṭhāna, and the tasting. Some chakras are moving very slowly, like this. When you turn the dynamo with your hand like this, there is no energy. So it is that energy, that resonance, that vibration which purifies all the pollution through which your chakra is polluted. When everything is purified and clean, then through Svara Yoga Sādhana, the nāḍī... Nāḍī Vidyā, also that Nāḍī Vidyā is an Āyurvedic reading of the pulse. Now, very, very few good Vaidyas are left who have the Nāḍī Vidyā, the pulse diagnosis. Through your pulse, the Vaidya can tell you that you have constipation, or a problem with the gallbladder, or the liver, or kidney stones, or anything. He takes only a maximum of one minute. In one minute, he diagnoses the entire body without testing urine, stool, or blood. That’s knowledge. But how does he make the diagnosis? The vibration, the resonance. That resonance of the nāḍīs is connected with the central nerves and the Vajrā Nāḍī. So our chakra then begins to produce that sound, the resonance. In one of the bhajans, Mahāprabhujī said, "Mahāprabhujī, Iḍā Piṅgalā, Iḍā Piṅgalā. What is it? Iḍā Piṅgalā? Iḍā Piṅgalā miltā thā." Iḍā and Piṅgalā, when they meet, then the sound—that is the meditation they hold. There I was, meditating on the tenth. Tenth means that tenth door. Not the tenth door through which the jīva, the ātmā, goes out. A pure yogī's soul goes out through the Sahasrāra Cakra. For others, it goes either through the mouth, or the eyes go up, or blood comes through the ear, or the nose begins to bleed. When someone is going more to the lower world, they make urine and become cold. Only the yogī, the pure yogī, those who have the Guru’s kṛpā, go through the tenth door. The two doors are both eyes, two doors are both nostrils, two doors are both ears, the mouth, and the genital system. These are the nine doors. The tenth one is the Sahasrāra Cakra, and Mokṣa, liberation, Brahmaloka, opens from here. Then off you go into Brahman, enter the Brahmaloka. The door is the sun, so you have to pass through the sun. Did you read the book Divine Perception? Where does the bhakta write the letter about his experiences? That is how he said Mahāprabhujī is sitting there. You cannot go through the sun without Mahāprabhujī’s kṛpā. So, Mahāprabhujī is the king of the Brahmaloka. You must realize who Mahāprabhujī is. You don’t know. You don’t know his Śakti. You don’t know his power. You don’t know what Mahāprabhujī is. You realize him. Read the Līlāmṛta again and again, and again, and ask him again to bestow his blessing, to understand him. Mahāprabhujī said to Gurujī, "Gurujī asked one question to Mahāprabhujī: Why do they all not understand you?" Mahāprabhujī said, so on whom his blessing is, they will realize. But to get the blessing, you should be worthy enough. For this, you have to do three things. First, understand Guru Vākya, the words of the Master. Understand the Vākyas. Then you can serve, then Guru Sevā, and then you can have Guru Kṛpā; otherwise you cannot. So first is Guru Vakya, then the Seva, then the Kripa, Brahmaloka. So, "Iḍā Piṅgalā miltā thā, tab dhuninād ko suntā thā, daśvapar dhyān dharatā thā, batlā diyā Śrī Dev Purījī ne." So, I used to listen to the dhunināda, the dhuni. Dhuni means resonance. Dhun, the resonance. And now again, dhunī is that one. Magan means happy, like a bee sitting on the flower, and she is now happy, sucking energy, sucking the amṛta nectar. She is happy. Similarly, your soul and your chetana are that bee. In seva, you are receiving, sucking that amṛt, the nectar of kṛpā. Others cannot. Dhuni nada, nada means sound. At that time, I was hearing the melody of that eternal sound. "Daśavapāra dhyāna dhāraṇadatha." Then I was meditating on the tenth door. And that’s what happens when you receive Kriya. You get very clear instructions to awaken your Sahasrāra Cakra with a golden arrow and with that eternal mantra of the sound Oṁ and So’haṁ. Soham. Resonance. We are coming again to that point. Nāda. So our entire being is just nothing but that cosmic sound, when every atom of our body, every particle of our body is in resonance, nothing else. If that resonance goes out, then all the elements will dissolve, like when you blow out a candle and now there is no flame, because all three elements are gone. The oxygen is gone, the fire is gone, and also this fuel energy is gone. Maybe the ghee, oil, petroleum, or wax is gone. So, it dissolved. Where has it gone in this room? The flame disappeared because these three elements are separated, and they were together by one power. So, there are many nice bhajans, a bhajana of Mīrābāī, I will not sing now, and some other bhajana. Bhakti is the oil, and the dot is myself, and the fire, the flame, is my tapasyā. By Lord, I am burning for you the dot, and may the oil disappear, and the dot will burn till the end. It’s not so easy to get God’s realization, my dear. It’s not so easy, you have to wait, you have to wait, you have to steal, the dot is long left, you know, the whole dot has to burn. It is like that, so it’s a beautiful bhajan. Anyhow, that resonance is concentrated, like our body is connected to the mother. The body is connected through the navel, and the mother’s body is connected to the navel of the cosmic mother. We inhale and we exhale, not only oxygen. But the cosmic mother nourishes her child with this constant, dynamical movement of the āra and urad, inhalation and exhalation. Inhale, exhale, inhale and exhale. Center that flame of life into the heart, and that flame of life will burn so long from the cosmic mother, Prāṇa Śakti. It’s a beautiful science. First, you have to travel, astral traveling within your body. Yathā Brahmaṇḍe, tathā Piṇḍe. What is in the universe is in the body. That’s why the sun and moon are both in the body. So that sound is centered in the Manipūra Chakra, the seed of the sound. The seed of the words is in the Maṇipūra Chakra. Now, the sound is divided into three stages, three categories: Parā, Paśyantī, and Vaikharī. Parā means the deepest. Paśyantī is middle, and Vaikharī is loud. So these are the three levels of the sound. That parā is that eternal resonance, that eternal cosmic Self, and from there is awakening. When it awakes, then that sound is formed in the vocal cords, and that is Viśuddhi Chakra. Then, after forming the sound, it is manifested on the lips, tongue, and lips. So, parā, or you see, now we come to the parā śakti, parā brahma, not paragrahma, not paragraph, and it is like that. So from here, parā, paśyantī, and vaikharī. The seed of the sound is in the navel, not in the brain. Brain centers are only after that; they are reflecting and they are working, they are connecting. Of course, the entire body is depending on those movements, the guiding vibrations. But the seat of the sound is in the navel. Now, if you put your hand on your navel, press your navel, or put your palm on the navel, but more near, and just speak one sentence, and while speaking, feel the pressure—where is the pressure? It will be on the navel. So you shall speak one sentence. First, I will tell, and then I will speak. Then I will raise my hand up, then you speak. "Yes, I am happy." Did you feel? Once more, concentrate properly on the navel. Put your hand on the navel. I will raise my hand up, and then you should say, "I am happy." Close your eyes. You got it. Okay, so concentrate on the Manipūra Chakra, and you will say then, "I am happy." But like this, "I am happy." I am happy. Now, do you feel that? Very good. Alright. These are the three levels. You should read our book, Hidden Powers in Humans. This blue book is beautiful. So, when we chant Oṁ, then the sound awakes from the Maṇipūra. And it unites vibration through both nāḍīs, vibrating through these two nāḍīs, into the Suṣumnā, the central nāḍī. And straight it goes to the Sahasrāra Chakra. And from the Sahasrāra Cakra, through the Sūrya Nāḍī, the sound goes to the heart. Now, both Nāḍīs begin from the small of the brain, where the Ājñā Cakra is. As the reflection is here, that’s the light. So, the right side is Sūrya, and the left is the moon. Now, from here, the moon goes to the right, and the right one goes to the left. At the Bindu Chakra, Viśuddhi, now the Sūrya which went to the left again will move back to the right, and the moon which went to the right will move then to the left. So this Sūrya Nāḍī, which is moving through the Viśuddhi Chakra, heats our heart. And that’s why the sound from the Sahasrāra that is observed by Sūrya Nāḍī goes to the Anāhata, to the heart. And the moon nāḍī becomes like this—not jealous, but emotional. Then the moon nāḍī takes notice or becomes aware of the entire resonance. And then the moon takes over the whole emotional process, a very pleasant feeling. That resonance creates positive energy, and therefore, when you chant Aum, Aum, it creates your own phenomenon. It penetrates through your whole body. All five bodies are purified and prepare a very pleasant space, your world, your phenomenon. So now this OM sound, OM resonance, purifies all negative energies, like creating a protective curtain, a protective coat. In German, this is Schutzmantel, so a layer of protection. So during meditation, no negative energy can attack you. How? I told you one example yesterday. Who remembers? Yes. Who was the second one? Who was the third one? That, if we see, darkness wants to come near to the light, so it is not able to do it. That’s it. The darkness cannot come near the light. Automatically, darkness is dissolved, disappears, and dissolves into the light. So the energy of the Aum is that which enlightens your phenomenon; that’s called enlightenment. In that enlightenment there is no current. So the sound, which goes through, one enters into the anāhata, and second into the space, plus it begins to vibrate in the body, penetrating, like a snake charmer. He plays his been and the snake in the basket. His blood cells are trembling. The most sensitive creature to sound vibration is the snake, and the snake has no ears. Snakes have no ears; they only feel through their whole body and through vibrations from objects. Though he doesn’t have ears, he hears more than us. He feels earth vibration when you go to search, "Where is the snake?" A hundred meters before he will disappear. So when the flute is played and that snake in the basket, all centers are awake in him, and the snake who understands the resonance very well. So that sound of the melody of the flute puts him in the divine, divine mood. What do you call it? Ecstasy. And when he opens the basket, the snake comes up and he dances with the flute. That’s Nāda Yoga. That is a sound. How the sound will go further. What will happen? How to master that sound. Now, the sound will create the butter over the milk. And if you try to take that butter, and if you want to collect the butter, there is a cobra sitting there. Don’t hurry up. Wait. Enjoy from far. So this resonance, when you will do through the Kriyā, will touch all your chakras, your palms, your fingers, your heart, the love, then we have to go very gently over. And that I will tell you next time. Dīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān, Kī Jai, Devī Svara Mahādeva, Kī Jai, Mādhav Kṛṣṇa Bhagavān, Kī Jai, Sanātana Dharma, Kī Jai.
