Searching for the Guru

The body is a divine vehicle for the soul's journey. A disciple suffered severe brain damage and paralysis from an accident. Years later, a second accident caused further injury, with doctors offering a dire prognosis. A spiritual teacher was urgently summoned to the hospital's intensive care unit, where access is typically restricted. The teacher arrived, and the disciple, while in a coma, perceived a profound light entering his being during the teacher's blessing. This experience is held as a testament to the miraculous potential of yoga and complete devotion. The physical form is a wondrous coach pulled by the ten senses, with the intellect as the reins and the soul as the king within. This intricate body, a divine miracle no scientist can replicate, operates with profound intelligence, like the heart's ceaseless labor. True yoga involves exploring this inner universe through practice, expanding consciousness, and surrendering to grace. One must discover and share their unique talents; otherwise, these gifts are lost. The highest practice is satsang and offering a heart full of devotion.

"By the blessing of Gurudeva, He is the Supreme; everything He can do. But there should be complete confidence, devotion, and surrender."

"This body—some aspects we understand, and some we do not. No scientist can do that; it is a God-made world, and that is God's work. It is a miracle."

Part 1: A Living Example of the Miracle of Yoga Dear sisters, Gurujī, Swāmījī, my name is Maṅgal Purī, and I am from Salzburg, Austria. Swāmījī asked me to tell you the story of my life and how I came into the yoga of everyday life. I first met Swāmījī in 1986. After my first accident—a car accident—I crashed into a bridge. An iron part of the bridge hit me on the right side of my head and took away part of my brain. Since then, I have had a handicap, a paralysis on my left side. The impact damaged the right side of my brain, and I have lived with this paralysis and a damaged brain ever since. For years, I then began to practice yoga with Swāmījī. Four years later, I fell down some stairs and broke my aorta in my neck—the big aorta. The doctors told my parents, "He has paralysis on the right side, on the left side, and his mind will remain that of a two-year-old." After four years, he fell down the stairs, damaged his aorta, and also had paralysis on the other side. Doctors told his parents he had paralysis on both sides and that his mind would remain as that of a two- to three-year-old. Somehow, Swami Yamunājī from Barcelona heard that I was lying in a Vienna hospital with severe injuries. He went to Swāmījī and said, "Swāmījī, please come, please come help him. Maṅgal Purī is lying in the hospital, please help him." He tried five or six times, and Swāmījī then came to the intensive care unit of the hospital. She found out that Maṅgal Purī was in the hospital, lying in the emergency room. She came to Swāmījī and asked him to come to the hospital and help. She asked him five or six times, and Swāmījī came to the emergency room where he was lying. As far as I know, between medical care and intensive care, it is not possible to go into an intensive care station in a hospital. In Austria? In Austria. Maybe in Georgia, it’s difficult. Yes, it’s difficult, if possible. But you see, it was difficult and possible because Swāmījī came. I was in a coma from my accident twice, for six weeks each time. Twice. I remember in this state of coma that Swāmījī came and took the bandage from my head. He put his head on my neck and held it there. I saw only light, and it was coming into my mind, into my soul. He remembers that day; he was lying in a bed then, and Swāmījī came. He took off the bandage from his head and took his hand behind his navel, put his hand on his navel, and immediately he saw the light. He just saw the light that was coming from above him. So, by this miracle I was part of, I know miracles through yoga can happen. I am a living example of a miracle that can happen through yoga. Thank you, Viśvagurujī. To tell you a story about mantra: the first time I felt Swāmījī before he entered the room in 1986, I was in a military unit of the forces in Syria. I had been to Syria with the military forces of the United Nations. When I had those experiences, I was waiting for something there because I wanted to know more about life. I had these experiences in some place—at Wadi Rum and in Jordan. There are some very holy spaces in this area, and I felt the spirit, and I wanted more. I know that. Then my sister told me in Salzburg, after my first experience, "Come with me, get to know Swāmījī." I said, "Okay, I will come." I was sitting in a room. It would be like here. I was in one room, sitting like over there, and he entered the main door. I started to cry, and my heart opened completely. So I knew I had found my right master, and I finally got him. Before he met Swāmījī, Marcus Maṅgal Purī served in the forces of the United Nations. He was a peacekeeping officer. Yes, he was a peacekeeping officer. The nation states engaged in observer forces. Observer forces, yes. These are peacekeeping military units under the auspices of the United Nations, which were in Syria at that time. He served there and visited very spiritual places, such as Jerusalem, Bani Rum, Jordan, and Israel. He came to Swāmījī and had some interesting experiences there, and during some military operations too. He wanted to know more about this; he aspired to some kind of spirituality. When he came to Salzburg, it was already after his first accident. His sister told him to come to a meeting with Swāmījī. When he came, Swāmījī had not entered the room yet, but he already felt his presence. He began to cry, and he felt how his heart opened. He felt the presence of this spirit. So, I can only give you good advice: if you start the system of yoga daily, live it, practice the āsanas, practice the prāṇāyāmas, and follow Swāmījī’s advice. I want to give you just a good piece of advice. If you practice or have started practicing yoga in your everyday life, do āsanas, do prāṇāyāmas, do what you are advised to do. Fill up your senses, even in daily life. And if doctors tell you that with vegetarian meals you will not get healthy, if the doctor will tell you that a vegetarian diet will not help you to become healthy or you will not have children, please do not believe it. Maṅgal Purī was married, he had children, then he got divorced, then he got married again. He studied jurisprudence, and now he works in the local government of Salzburg, but not as mayor, as he said. Well, that’s not a bad position, is it? In fact, this is true, because Sadguru is the last station. While searching, searching, you come to the Sadguru for the right direction. Now, Marcus or Maṅgal Purī, his father is also a doctor. Papa Marcus Maṅgal Purī, he is also a doctor. Yes, 1989. And his sister, Kojima, is married in India. Yes, when Maṅgal Purī had an accident, before he bought a car, I said it’s not good. I said it’s too early, you are too young. But the son of the doctor, who has money, got a car, and the horse is well to ride. The horses were too wild, so he got into a very serious accident. Then, unfortunately, he lost his balance and fell down. Where was, including his father? They said there is no hope. If he survives, he will be paralyzed. And his memories, the mental capacity will go and decrease. But his soul was gone to a far distance. In the coma. So, even he did not know. One of my disciples, she is now a swāmī, a sādhvī, and is taking care of our yoga in her life in Spain. And now she is conducting yoga in everyday life in the ashram in Spain, Barcelona. One is near, somewhere about 300 km driving distance. And one in the Canary Islands. There is also a shrine on the Canary Islands. I was there three weeks ago, and there is a small village. The mayor of the village donated one school as an āśram. He gave as a donation the building of an old school for the āśram of her five-day life. Big, like this cave. So at that time, she was still not a sādhvī. But she was very kind to all. And when the accident happened and he was transported by helicopter to Vienna, he was not conscious, so she asked me to come and bless him. I knew the soul went far away, but I said, "At least please come and bless," they said, "At least please come and bless," her sister also. So I prayed to Mahāprabhujī, "If I go there, then I should not come back empty-handed." The intensive care, the ICU, you know, everywhere they are very cautious and strict because of the infections. And especially people like in Austria. All in Germany, they don’t compromise. They say no, no questions. It’s a complete infraction. But they taught me that, please come with me. So I went to the General Hospital in Vienna. And when I walked towards the ICU department, they saw me. And they just opened the doors. They didn’t ask questions about where I wanted to go. So the nurses, they just opened the door and they stayed there. And even they opened his door, and I went, so it was his luck. So it was with me, like Mahāprabhujī is coming, and that was the light, and with that light the soul descended. Immediately, his eyeballs were rolling, and he breathed deeply like this. So I said something to him, a mantra in his ear, and he came back to consciousness. So, when we have confidence, 100%, then it is said: Anvani Guru Karsake, Anvani Dev Dmitai, Parabrahma Gurudev Hai, Samkush Dev Dmitai. Impossible things can become possible. And what is possible can become impossible. By the blessing of Gurudeva, He is the Supreme; everything He can do. But there should be complete confidence, devotion, and surrender. And sometimes the destiny of the soul goes too far, then Gurudev knows that if it comes back, it will be completely physically and mentally dependent. Sometimes it is a wish of the soul to go away; we have only a certain time with our parents, families, or friends. We have only a certain time with our parents, with our families, with our children, but it will come back, so we have to accept it. Life is very mysterious. This machine that God has made, no scientist till today can make. Okay, we can change some organs, the joints, but that is very little. For example, the blood. Till today, there is no scientist who can make blood. That kind of blood which has everything inside, all your genes inside. In our blood is the story of all the ancestors, and it cannot be mixed. Maybe we have similar, the same blood group, that’s all. After that, it is different from the mother’s side, the father’s side, the grandparents. That’s God’s miracle. And we don’t know where the soul is in the body. When we consciously or unconsciously, spontaneously, ask where the soul is, then we indicate somewhere in our body. So raise your hand up, and close your eyes. Now touch your hand to your body where you think your soul is, and leave it there. Do not move the hand away, and look to your hand where it is. Where did you put your head? And look at the neighbors. So the soul is here. It is mine. I say it. I am. I say you from my heart. From my soul. When you write a postcard from holidays to your friends, you write greetings. Send you hearty greetings. So we greet from the heart, because this is all. Did you ever write or get a postcard with birthday greetings? I wish you all the best from my heart. And where do the brain greetings come from? This is the message of the war. War. Fighting, destruction. So the soul is here, but it’s feeling its completeness in the whole body. Wherever anything happens to the body, anywhere, the message goes immediately to the brain and is transferred to the heart. Love, happiness, doubts, anger, and fear attack our heart. The heart is very loyal. Now, the upper part is also getting cold. You are making a bomb there, and the cold is here. Yes, it’s cold. So, the whole body is connected with the soul. It is our skin that transfers feelings to the nerves. And the nerves transfer the message to the brain, and the brain immediately gives it to the heart. The heart is very loyal to us. Does it matter if we are sleeping or awake, or we are swimming or jogging? Whatever we are doing, the heart is doing its duty. Part 2: The Body as Divine Vehicle We go to rest and sleep, but the heart does not. You never say to your heart, "Today, please rest." You do not tell your heart to relax. And the heart—do you know how much blood it pumps per minute? How much blood does it take in a minute? Nearly three liters. Two and a half liters, certainly. So it takes one minute, maximum one minute, for the blood from the whole body to return to the heart. This is filtering, going through the heart. Thus, the heart is pumping 2.5 liters per minute. But when you are engaged in more activity, they say the heart pumps five liters per minute. When they say the heart pumps five liters per minute, the total volume of liquid in our body is five liters. So this small machine, the heart, is like this. Can you imagine this pump is working all the time? It warms the blood and sends it to the kidneys for purification. If anything is missing in the blood, some organs or glands suffer. This is a vast science. Let us just take a look at the blood. Similarly, all the different organs are responsible for life. In this body, the Ātmā is the king. Holy Gurujī has brought a beautiful bhajana: "I sit in such a beautiful coach. My coach is wondrous and wonderful." In this coach, which I have sat in many times, there are ten horses pulling it. These ten horses are the ten senses—desires—pulling us here and there. And who is the rider of the coach? It is the one who controls the ten horses of the mind. That mind uses the rope, or what you call the reins to control the horse: śigala. Śigala, in English, is someone's knowledge. It is the intellect, and the mind is the rider. The viveka, the highest intellect, is the viveka. What is giving us different experiences? In that coach, there is a light, and that light is the viveka. It means that jñāna, the light of knowledge. And that viveka is the secretary of the king. Viveka is the secretary of this king, giving beautiful experiences and information to the king, and that king is the Ātmā. The Ātmā is sitting in this coach. With this coach, with this knowledge, I travel through many different parts of the world. It was always very pleasant. So through this body, this jīvātmā, or soul, is traveling from this world to the highest. I travel from this world to other worlds. In this coach, there are many different kinds of music. This is called Nāḍī Yoga. There is a beautiful version written by Gurujī in the book. So this body—some aspects we understand, and some we do not. Doctors try, and they are researching. They know a lot about the body, but still not everything. They still cannot make a body—all the brain, eyes, hearing, many, many things. No scientist can do that; it is a God-made world, and that is God's work. It is a miracle. To understand that, then you can proceed to say, "Oh, now I know what God is." At present, we do not know; we perhaps know 1%. We know how to eat, how to drink, and how to sleep. That is all. So this life is a mystery. Yoga is the science of the body. Through āsanas, through prāṇāyāma, through meditation—what we call astral traveling—first we are traveling within our body and in space. As long as you can travel, if you are still in the body, let us say we think of Kyiv and Cherkasy. Our consciousness is expanding now: Kyiv, Cherkasy, Moscow, Vienna. You see how our consciousness is expanding with our mind at the highest speed. With that speed, our consciousness is expanding. Therefore, there is no instrument that can be quicker than this. So, as far as you can expand your consciousness, that is still from your physical ability. The machines which are stored in this station of the body are communicating from here. Let us say we talk about Mars or Jupiter. Now we are on Jupiter only. This is how our consciousness, our memories, can expand. But still, our ātmā is different. This is only our senses. This comes through meditation, mantra, and that kind of certainty and devotion. There should be complete Guru Kṛpā; otherwise, you will get crazy, you will have problems—what we call psychic problems. Then we need the Guru Kṛpā. So, the miracles that are in the body and what is possible through this body are found nowhere else. We should utilize this. We have it, and we shall use it. We use it or lose it. The knowledge you have, the abilities you have, the talents you have—give them further to others; otherwise, they will be gone, lost. You have a particular ability that no one else has. If you do not give it to someone, when you die, it is gone. Therefore, research within thyself what talents you have and give these talents. That is the highest state or level of yoga. That is it. And that only comes through practice. It will come through Guru Kṛpā. Without Guru Kṛpā, you cannot get kṛpā. You cannot get it. Kṛpā. Of course, we would like to spend much more time with him. It is undisputed, and no one argues. Our love and gratitude for him grows every minute, and we all feel it. It rises and is entwined in us. Well, of course, it is very difficult that he is so far from us, but there is Skype. Swāmījī, if we ask him well, will come out with us on Skype. His presence will be with us, of course. I think the atmosphere in the cave is so charged with his presence, his energy, his love for us, that we will now feel this warmth, this love for a very long time here. In the cave, we will come here for satsaṅg, listen to his lectures. Now we will have a recording, thanks to our dear Satī Prem, our humble one. I want to share one very small personal story. I worked in the American embassy, and once an American diplomat came to my office. We had a meeting with him, and he was quite... Can you hear me? Yes, of course. Can you hear me? I am talking loudly. The person was not young, about 60 years old, and he saw a photo of Swāmījī on my desk. He said, "Who is it?" I said, "This is my guru." He literally had what is called, "You succeeded." He looked at me in amazement and said, "This is the first time in my life I have met a person who has a guru." I envy myself that we have this luck, and let us appreciate it. We are eternally grateful to Swamiji for coming. Thank you so much. The time has come for gifts as well. Such a kind and grateful person. According to Indian tradition, the teacher is given a flower vase and a shawl. Now is the time for thanks, for farewell, and for presents. So, according to Indian tradition, to the guru you give a shawl and a flower garland. A small piece of Georgia and a symbolic pomegranate, filled with different fruits of our land, we also give to Swamiji so that he will take a little piece of it with him. As a small gift from Georgia, since one of the symbols of Georgia is the pomegranate, this is a small pomegranate box with some nuts from Georgia, Swāmījī. If you open it like this, then everything will... just a little, yes, like this. Another small gift: Swamijī loves to drink tea. We hope to give him a small tea service. Not Georgian, but it is still good, so that he drinks tea and remembers us sometimes. Thank you. Our dear Mañsa Devī, the secretary of Swamiji, who is selfless, helps him always, everywhere, travels around the world. We also love her very much, and we also want to give her a small Georgian ball. Thank you very much for coming here and supporting us. We love you very much. You have been a great support for us. Om Prakash, who repaired our wonderful instrument and made it. Seva Devī helped us a lot. How far is Siberia? Seven thousand kilometers? Seven thousand? Yes. India is 5,000 miles from here? India from here? Yes, 4,000. 4,000, yes. India is 4,000. Which is the Siberian capital? The capital—there is no capital because it is still Russia—but the biggest city is Novosibirsk. Novosibirsk, which is from Tomsk. The population of Tomsk, for example, for salt-paste issues, is 800,000. Because Lakṣmī from Jagre is also from Siberia. I have some disciples there. Now you can already go. Our driver, Saraswati, she is a very good driver. Other bad girls too. I am sorry, I am overwhelmed with feelings. Bhaktas have a very good expression: they said we have two motherlands. One is near the lotus feet of the Gurudev. This is Saguṇa, the physical form of the Divine, and we can be in His presence, ask Him questions, and receive answers from Him. The second motherland of the bhakta is in the heart, where the form of the divine is in nirvāṇa form, without form. So what we can give to Viśvagurujī is our heart—a heart full of love, devotion, and faith. Thank you so much for your fatherly love that you give to us. I also want to thank all our brothers and sisters here. During this seminar, we became even closer, like one. I want to give this to Gyān, David. I want to give this to you because it means a lot to me and to all members of this group. Come to visit us; we will be happy to see you. Excuse me, I am a bit confused. Blessings to all of you. Practice your mantra. Come to satsaṅg. Satsaṅg is the highest point of yoga. Satsaṅg is the highest thing that can be done in yoga. If you cannot come sometimes to yoga class, you should come to satsaṅg. Then, from time to time, I can also join yoga via Skype. So, it was very nice. And Gyān Devī is, as ever, your leader. Now she has little duties. Of course, it is sad that her son passed away, and her husband has also emigrated somewhere else. Now she remains as your sister, as your mother, as your friend, as your teacher. So now her duty is spiritual development. We will think over what we can do with her. After one to two years, she has to be prepared. She has to be prepared. Many thanks to her for giving opportunities and inviting all of you here to this spiritual center, yoga and life, the ashram, the cave. So I would like to give her a blessing: whenever she keeps the satsaṅg here and meditates, she should have this sound over her. Tomorrow, I am flying by aeroplane back to Vienna, and I will be in London, England. Do you remember the next speech? Yes, next speech. Then I will be in Hungary. Hungary is near Austria. Hungary is near to Austria, but for seven years I was not there in Szeged. For seven years, I was not there in Szeged. So after seven years, the term came. So it will be in Hungary, then again, Strilky. There is some program; I do not know what, but something. Then, flying to India. When I fly with Austrian Airlines, I see on the left side Georgia, Belize. I am always speaking in English. From Vienna, I fly about 1 o'clock, 1:20, 1:30, so your time is 2:30. The flight takes about three hours to come here. Sometimes we go in different directions, but mostly from Vienna to Delhi, it is 5,555 kilometers. Oh, there is a red button. Red light. So, good night.
