Mahashivaratri

Mahāśivarātri is the cosmic night of Śiva and the resonance of OM.

The sound OM pervades the universe. Chanting OM calls Śiva. Worship follows protocol: first Gaṇeśa, remover of obstacles. Then Śiva is invited with Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya. Śiva has no mother or father. Space and consciousness are of unknown origin. Energy holds them together. This energy is yoga, union. Its movement is resonance, Nāda, the sound OM. Through resonance, consciousness illuminates. Creation begins from this illumination. The dark night of Śivarātri turns into light through Nāda. The Mahāmṛtyuñjaya Mantra removes suffering. Meditation on inner space connects one to Śiva. Offerings are poured on the liṅga, the universe's form. This night fosters awakeness, transforming darkness into light.

"Eko’haṁ bahu syāmī — I am one, and I will multiply."

"The light within you is the Śivarātri."

Connect our awareness to the Cosmic Consciousness. There must be some technique to call him, and that is first OM. Let us have three times OM. You know, the scientists at the NASA center, they researched the sound in the universe, and in the sun itself, I have a CD with it, and it’s OṂ. Very clearly OṂ. So Indian ṛṣis, yogīs, it’s not only, we think it’s only sitting on the fakir on the needle. It is a science, so Om spreads in the whole universe. And it doesn’t matter where he is. Who is he? Shiva. And he will, the sound will attract him and come to us. Deep inhale, and let this resonance in your inner space. It’s something like Shiva is now awakened. What is wrong? What alarm is there? And now we call Śiva, please come. That’s a beautiful invitation. Namaḥ Śivāya, Om Namaḥ Śivāya. Namaḥ Śivāya, Om Namaḥ Śivāya. Om Namaḥ Śivāya, Om Namaḥ Śivāya. There is a protocol. Even in the universe, there is a protocol. Even in the space, there is a protocol. First, water has to come up. First, the water has to rise up; then the environment changes, and then the rain comes, and then the water comes down. So everything has its program. Now, in Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva, these three, now, the question comes. That is the problem. Now, to whom should we first welcome? So, there was some decision. And that was first, it’s called Gaṇeśjī. Though Gaṇeśa is known as a son of Śiva, Gaṇeśa has the first place. Ganesha is the symbol of goodness and prosperity, the protector, and one of the best in removing all obstacles. Always, first we worship Gaṇeśjī. Then be sure now what you request, it will be successful. Try one day, so invite that particular God. I don’t ask you that you should do Gaṇeśjī, Aśārik, Śivjī, Viṣṇu, or Lakṣmaṇ, or Jesus, or anybody. God is one. Love is one. So, we see God in that form, and we invite. Yes. Then we pray inwardly. I hope it will be successful. I did my best. And I pray to God. I hope God will help me. Yes. Hope. For a human, hope is a walking stick. From cradle to grave, hope—I hope, I... hope—so that hope is someone who can fulfill and protect us, that is justice. And it will support you, so that’s why first we call Gaṇeśa. That’s beautiful. Gaṇeśa means all those divine entities, and Gaṇeśa, that Īśvara, he is the God of all, so helping, supporting, and therefore we open this ceremony now. With devotion, a request, a prayer to Gaṇeśa Jī, with a beautiful Gaṇeśa dance. So we invite. We are happy to welcome here Mr. Dr. Kmonček, who is coming from the President’s office and who was so generous to take patronage of this evening. So we are going to witness the dance showing, illustrating the devotion. He is the source of all evil. He is the source of all blessings. Lord Śiva Himself is worshipping Him. I dedicate the flowers to Him. I offer the flowers. He is omniscient and omnipresent. He can share a few words with us. Welcome. Good evening, and first of all, let me thank you for inviting me to this festival. It is always a great pleasure, a great festival, and a great honor when His Holiness visits the Czech Republic. I was the ambassador of the Czech Republic to India from 2006 to 2009. And I experienced what I think many of you have experienced too: whoever touches India one time is in touch with India forever. And it is the way which everyone takes to get into oneself. Because there is nothing more important in the world than to know thyself. And there are rare guides on this path, there are rare guides, like our Indian friends, who have been going on this way for thousands of years already. Searching Himself Through India. And as the ambassador of the Czech Republic in India must be aware, he is not representing only the Czech Republic to India, but there in the Czech Republic, there is a huge community of people who are interested, who know about India. Who are friends of India and who are interested in India, not only in a commercial way but in a philosophical way, about what comes from India. So it’s up to me just to say thank you to you, because it’s thanks to your interest that you are helping to spread the knowledge of the Czech Republic in India, so that in India the Czech Republic is as known as India is known in the Czech Republic. So I was very happy to take patronage over this celebration. Hezký večer. And so, once more, thank you, and I must convey the greetings from the Indian ambassador to the Czech Republic, Mr. Kumar. I was talking to him, and he was very explicit that I have to convey his greetings and his thanks for all that you are doing for India. So as I’ve said, Your Holiness, welcome to the Czech Republic, and feel at home here as much as we feel at home in your country. Thank you, Your Holiness. Namaste. Dear Dr. Kmoníček, thank you very much for your kind words and for conveying the greetings of His Excellency, the Ambassador. I would like to invite Mr. Vivek Oja, the president of the committee of the Czech Vishwaguru Deep Hindu Mandir. It is up to him to open the program officially in the name of the organizers. Dear brothers and sisters, I welcome all of you here. I welcome His Excellency, Mr. Kmonicek, His Holiness, Swamijī, and all of you. So now you can translate in Czech, yeah? So, thank you very much. So, I will try to tell something about Mahāśivarātri. We are celebrating this time, this function for the fifth, you can say like this, that it’s a fifth anniversary. Most Hindu festivals are not there for their myth and color. But Śivarātri is a night dedicated to prayers. And contemplation. A contemplative state. Of course, when Lord Śiva is worshipped, there is a joy all around, but it is not just joy, but bliss that is achieved through Brahmā’s realization. When Lord Śiva is seen in all animate and inanimate, let’s all take advantage of this sacred time and remain engaged in worship, prayer, and meditation on Śivarātri night. May our practice bring us to peace within. May this peace multiply and affect the world around us. Let this night not just be a night of wakefulness. Let this night be a night of awakeness for you. The one who drinks the elixir is called the Lord. And he who drinks poison is called the God of all gods. For the Lord of darkness, Lord of nothingness, Lord of emptiness, Lord of the tāṇḍava, Lord of the birth and death of the universe, let us all join together in praying to Lord Śiva for the happiness of all beings. May the auspicious light of Lord Śiva fill each and every heart with peace. May today’s Mahāśivarātri bring blessings and fulfillment to you all. Jai Mahādeva. And now I will request Swāmījī to start with the Pūjā and Abhiṣeka. Thank you, Mr. Oja, Panditjī, His Excellency. First, I welcome you as being ambassador in India, and now in the President’s Office, and my dear brothers coming from the Embassy of India. Second Secretary, Rajeshji, welcome, bless you, and also sending blessings to His Excellency, the Ambassador-in-Chief, and the whole Embassy members, dear brothers and sisters. It is indeed a very divine evening, and we are fortunate ones. Now we did invite Gaṇeśajī, then Śiva. Now we have to do the formalities for Śivjī, then there will be dance again by Bhakti Devī, adoration to Bhagavān Śiva. The word "Lord" is too little. "Lord" can be as a house lord. So the word "Lord" for God is too little. Therefore, God is good. Our Bhagavān is good. Pūjā Abhiṣeka, and in this Abhiṣeka we will now have the Pañcāmṛta. There are many different kinds of Amṛta. So Pañca Amṛta means five nectars. And these five nectars come together and become the nectar of immortality. And with this, we bathe the Śiva. As a liṅga, and liṅga means the entire universe. This is the embodiment of the entire universe because he is the first one. About this we will speak later. Because again, the Paṇḍitjī will say, "Swāmījī, you talk too much." Now, we invited Śiva. He is here. Ganeshji is here, and until the pūjā is finished, nobody should move. You all have the opportunity to come and make the abhiṣeka. I will demonstrate, and then you will all come. And after that, we will have lectures again. All right? Dobry? Ano? OK. Sugandhim Puṣṭi Vardhanam Urvarukam Tryambakam Vyajāḥ Oṁ Tryambakam Vyajāḥ He Sugandhim Puṣṭi Vat Urvarukam Vibhavandana Pṛthvor Vāgīta Oṁ Tryambakam Vyajāḥ Oṁ Tryambakam Vyajāḥ Oṁ Tryambakam E Sugandhi Puṣṭi Vardhanam Urvandh Pratyur Mokṣir Mahāmṛta Oṁ tryambakaṁ yajāmahe sugandhiṁ puṣṭi-vardhanam urvārukam iva bandhanān mṛtyor mukṣīya māmṛtāt Ūrva Śānti Śānti... You will get this pot, and inside is pañcāmṛta, and you will just pour it on Śivajī, and we sing, "Oṃ Tryambakaṃ Yajāmahe." And then we can also sing, "Oṃ Namaḥ Śivāya." And then you can also sing Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya. Oṁ Tryambakaṁ yajāmahe sugandhiṁ puṣṭi-vardhanam, urvārukamiva bandhanān mṛtyormukṣīya māmṛtāt. Oṁ śāntiḥ, śāntiḥ, śāntiḥ. Bless you in the name of Bhagavān Sadāśiva, Śrī Śiva. I pray to the Almighty to bless this golden city, this beautiful country, the Czech Republic, and from here, this is now the center of the universe, where Śiva is sitting, is the center. And may the people of the Czech Republic spread love, peace, and harmony throughout the whole world. So please be part of the ceremony and make it sacred. I will come back to you very soon. Thank you. I had one appointment, some promise that Sattva Purī and Sanjīvanī, they organized one Mahāśivarātri program separately. So they came to me, and I said, "Okay, I will come." So I was there for half an hour. Next time, it should be together. So that’s why I just kept it for half an hour, but you did good. You are doing your saṅkalpa. You invite Śiva. In such a way, and with very nice mantras, Śivarātri, there are many stories, many tales about Śiva. Often, I speak in my speech about Śiva. It’s very interesting, and it is not a fairy tale. It is a reality that everyone is born. Everyone has a father and a mother. But only one who is Śiva has no mother and no father. So how did it happen? That is a very interesting thing. We come to this point. I attend now about the 18th of February. I was invited to one conference, a scientific conference. Many scientists came from around the world. And it was organized by Gulābjī Kotharī. The auditor of the Rajasthan Patrika, the newspaper. Some of you know his father also, Kapurchan Kulish. And he was in this hall also. Well, the conference was Vedas and Science. So many scientists were talking about this. And one or two scientists have touched this point, which I am going to tell. They did not tell in detail. It goes about the space. We can count the life of the sun, the existence of the sun, the moon, planets, our Earth, etc. But no one can tell how old this space is. This is a very interesting and significant point. And this space is a part of our body, from the five elements. The one is part of our body, as is space. And the second point is the consciousness. Also, we don’t know how old the consciousness is. Consciousness is beyond this space. Is the consciousness within the space? Or is the space within the consciousness? There must be a line, a border. But it’s beyond our imagination. That miracle we don’t know. And it is between both space and consciousness. There must be something which is holding them together. Keeping them separate. And that is energy. That energy in the universe, how old is that? We don’t know. So it is said, "Chetan ke to icchā nahī," the consciousness has no desire. "Jad se kus ne hot," and this material can’t do anything. That space can’t do anything. Then how did the creation begin? This is also a question. So, between the two, that energy is what is holding them together, like cement holds bricks together. That we call, the word comes, yoga. Yoga means not here what I am talking, asanas, pranayamas, meditations. This is a way to yoga. Yoga means union. Becomes one. Oneness. So uniting, so between these two, space and consciousness, where the energy begins, there is a kind of movement, and that is called resonance, time to time. Energy is life, and what is moving becomes life. So the Veda said, "Eko’haṁ bahu syāmī," I am one, and now I will multiply. Who said, "I will multiply"? Who is there? Eko’haṁ bahusyāmī. The will of God, thy will will be seen. But there is no God. God, definition is after. When we speak of God, we put God in limitation. There is a God, and there is a devil. There is a heaven, there is a hell. We are dividing. No, we should go beyond, further, we should go further. But it is said, "Eko’haṁ bahu syām," I am one, and I will multiply. Because we don’t have any other word. And in that situation, at that time, resonance, and that resonance is called Nāda. That is Nāda Yoga. Sound. And that nāda is a universal nāda which is called Oṁ. It’s not so easy to give a definition of the Oṃ. So that is a movement of the energy. And there, through this, the space gives that energy to the consciousness, where the consciousness begins to illuminate. Illuminate. It means not like this light. But illumination is something like life. There, the entire universe, where the fire element awakens. And it is there first, who collects the entire energy from the energy essence as one person. Can you imagine? The whole universe begins to sparkle. See the trīpīṭī? Such a big flame, and there, this life, the consciousness. Then there begins the life of Śivarātri. I was last here exactly one year ago today. Last year, I had a Śivarātri worship in Australia. And I told them, this is not only the story about one hunter. But it must be different. So in this one year, I was meditating, thinking, I was researching with my meditation to come to this point, Śiva-Rātri. Śiva and Rātri. Rātri means night. Night means dark. Lead us from darkness to the light. And so, from this dark space, through the nāda, the resonance of the Aum, it begins to give the light. So, the night turns into the light. Namah Śivāya, Om Namah Śivāya, Namah Śivāya, Om Namah, Hara Hara Bodh, Namah Śivāya. Therefore, therefore it is Tamaso mā jyotir gamaya. Proto ṛk Veda, the mantra comes, "Oṃ Tryambakaṃ Yajāmahe Sugandhiṃ Puṣṭi." Urdhvaretā eva vandanāt mṛtyur mukṣīr mahāmṛtāt. So is the meaning of the Śivarātri. So, if you have any questions, you are most welcome. And now, otherwise, in honor to Śiva, the Bhakti Devī is going to perform a devotion. And now, Bhakti Devī will express her devotion to Lord Śiva with her dance and wish you a very blessed Śivarātri. The light within you is the Śivarātri. Your Soul, your Jīvātmā is the, what we call, the Svayambhū. The body is different. Ātmā, beyond jīvātmā, is ātmā. The ātmā, not the jīvātmā, the jīvātmā is the ātmā. Śiva rātrī. A śiva rātrī. So, Dīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavānakī, Devīśvara Mahādevakī, Sanātanadharmakī, Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya, Namaḥ Śivāya,... Namaḥ Śivāya. Jisī Oceán Milosti O Pane Śiva The Sun In the form of Śiva Liṅgam, they are united within you. The holy river Gaṅgā flows from your hair, and your love, please take me to the safe shore of the ocean of the world. Please be merciful to me and ferry me across the ocean, the world’s ocean. Now we have to go to the meditation. Relax and close your eyes. Be aware of your being here. Feel your presence. This hall, Tuto Halu, is full of the divine energy of Swayambhu. Enter into your inner space. The Chidākāśa, space within thy consciousness, within this space. Observe through your awareness. Bring the awareness of your being here on this earth. You are part of the Swayambhū, light and resonance. Endless within thyself. We will chant the Mahāmṛtyu Jaya Mantra, and this manifestation of the resonance in your consciousness—be aware, be one with it. We will chant the Mahāmṛtyu Jaya Mantra slowly. First, I will chant, and then you will follow me. Feel, concentrate, be aware of your inner space. Forget all the worldly sorrows and attachments; just be the light. Thyself, you are the light in the entire universe. Relax. It’s a blessing of the Śivarātri in the presence of the Svayambhū. Let your consciousness feel the resonance of this Mahāmṛtyu Jaya Mantra. Oṁ Tryambakaṁ Yajāmahe Sugandhiṁ Puṣṭivardhanam Urvārukamiva Bandhanān Mṛtyormukṣīya Mā’mṛtāt The whole consciousness is filled with this divine vibration, the resonance of the Mahā Mantra. Feel within thy space, in the whole body. Oṃ Tryambakaṃ Yajāmāhe Sugandhiṃ Puṣṭi Vardhanam Urvārukamiva Bandhanān Mṛtyormukṣīya Mā’mṛtāt Uṣṭi Vardhanam Purva Rukammi Vandana Amṛta Yo Śrī Mā Amṛta Merciful Svayambhū Śiva, we adore you, and we are thankful, being in thy presence with us. O Merciful One, remove all the negative energy from my body. From my thoughts and feelings, bless my whole physical and mental body. To be healthy, blessed, happy, and have a long life. Swayam Bhū, we adore Thee for Your presence whenever we remember You. Please bless us with your divine darśan. We adore you, worship you, Lord Sadāśiv Swayambhu. Let your energy be within us, and please, in the form of the liṅga, just merge into the whole universe. Thank you for being with us. Always protect us. Oṃ Tryambakaṃ Yajāmahe Sugandhiṃ Puṣṭi Vardhanam Ūrvarukamiva Bandhanān Mṛtyormukṣīya Mā’mṛtāt Oṃ Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ. Imagine you are in your space. In that endless space, beautiful light, blue, dark, dark blue light in the sky. And imagine that Shiva slowly, slowly merging into the universe. We observe while singing his divine name. Namaḥ Śivāya Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya Namaḥ Śivāya Oṁ Namaḥ Namaḥ Śivāya Oṁ Namaḥ Namaḥ Śivāya Har Har Bho Namaḥ Śivāya Namaḥ Śivāya Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya Har Har Bho Deveśvara Mahādevakī, Alakhpurījī Mahādevakī, Dīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavānakī, Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandajī Bhagavānakī, Satī Sanātanādā O Gajānanda Mahārāja, bless us and protect us. We worship you. You are the light of our life. Jai Gaṇeśa, Jai Gaṇeśa,... Jai. I wish you all the best, a pleasant evening, a good night, and all the best. Thank you, Hari Om. But next time you should organize the program together, so that I don’t have to go there and there and there, okay? So next time I will come only to one program, which is under the Yoga and Dead Life. Of course, our Vishwaguru Deep Hindu Mandir, the Czech Hindu Society, that is going to the religious festivals, the other is going to yoga. I will try to blow the... I am coughing, so I don’t know if I have prāṇa inside.
