Mahashivaratri

The resonance of Aum is the primordial technique to connect awareness with Cosmic Consciousness. This sound pervades the universe and awakens Śiva. A protocol exists for divine invocation, beginning with Gaṇeśa to remove obstacles, ensuring the success of subsequent worship. The essence of Śivarātri is the transition from darkness to light, facilitated by this universal resonance. Creation emerges from the interplay of space and consciousness, united by energy whose movement is the sound Aum. This resonance triggers illumination, manifesting as Śiva, the self-born source. The practice is a science of union, directing inner awareness toward that infinite light within.

"Scientists at NASA researched the sound in the universe and within the sun itself. I have a CD of this sound, and it is very clearly Oṁ."

"Between these two, space and consciousness, where the energy begins, there is a kind of movement, and that is called resonance. That resonance is called nāda. That is Nāda Yoga, sound. And that nāda is a universal nāda which is called Aum."

To connect our awareness to the Cosmic Consciousness, there must be a technique to call upon it. The first and foremost technique is Oṁ. Let us chant Oṁ three times. Scientists at NASA researched the sound in the universe and within the sun itself. I have a CD of this sound, and it is very clearly Oṁ. So, the Indian ṛṣis and yogīs... this is not merely about someone sitting on a bed of nails. It is a science. Aum pervades the entire universe. It does not matter where He is. Who is He? Śiva. The sound will attract Him and bring Him to us. Take a deep inhale, and let this resonance fill your inner space. This sound resonates throughout the whole universe. It is as if Śiva is now awakened. What is wrong? What alarm is there? And now we call: "Śiva, please come." That is a beautiful invitation. Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya. Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya. Namaḥ Śivāya, Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya. Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya, Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya. There is a protocol. Even in the universe, there is a protocol. Even in space, there is a protocol. First, water has to rise, then the environment changes, and then the rain comes down. Everything has a program. In the trinity of Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva, a question arises: whom should we welcome first? That is also a problem. If the Prime Minister, the President, and another head of state are all here, whom do we welcome first? A decision was made: the first to be welcomed is Gaṇeśjī. Although Gaṇeśa is known as the son of Śiva, he holds the first place. Gaṇeśa is the symbol of goodness, prosperity, and protection, and is the best at removing all obstacles. We always worship Gaṇeśjī first. Then be assured that your request will be successful. Try it one day—invite that particular God. I am not asking you to worship only Gaṇeśjī, Śivjī, Viṣṇu, Lakṣmaṇ, Jesus, or anyone. God is one. Love is one. We see God in that form, and we invite Him. Then we pray inwardly: "I hope it will be successful. I did my best, and I pray to God. I hope God will help me." Hope is for a human. Hope is a walking stick. From cradle to grave: hope. "I hope, I hope, I hope so." That hope is something that can fulfill and protect us. That is justice, and it will support you. That is why we first call Gaṇeśa. It is beautiful. Jai Gaṇeśa, Jai Gaṇeśa, Jai Gaṇeśa. Paima Śrī Gaṇeśa, Śrī Gaṇeśa,... Rakṣama, Śrī Gaṇeśa, Śrī Gaṇeśa,... Śrī Gaṇeśa,... Śrī Gaṇeśa, Śrī Gaṇeśa. Gaṇ means those elements. Gaṇ means all those divine entities. And Gaṇeś, that Īśvara, is the God of all, helping and supporting. Therefore, we open this ceremony now with devotion, a request to Gaṇeśa Jī, with a beautiful Gaṇeśa dance. We invite... We are happy to welcome here Mr. Dr. Kmonček, who is coming from the President’s Office and who was so generous to take patronage of this evening. We are going to witness a dance showing, illustrating devotion to Gaṇeśjī. The first to come is Lord Gaṇeśa. He has elephant ears and a long trunk. He is the remover of all obstacles and problems. He is dancing the Tāṇḍava dance, the dance of destroying all evil. He is the source of all blessings. Lord Śiva himself worships him. I dedicate the flowers to him. I offer the flowers. He is omniscient and omnipresent. That was the first of two dance exhibitions you will see this evening. I would like to kindly ask Dr. Kmoníček from the President’s Office if he can share a few words with us. Dr. Kmoníček: Welcome. Good evening, and first of all, let me thank you for inviting me to this festival. It is always a great pleasure, a great festival, and a great honor when His Holiness visits the Czech Republic. I was the ambassador of the Czech Republic to India from 2006 to 2009. India is not just a country; it is not just a continent. India is the path; it is the way. And it is the way which everyone takes to get into oneself. Because there is nothing more important in the world than to know thyself. There are rare guides on this path, like our Indian friends, who have been going on this way for thousands of years already. The classic problem is passport issues and so on, but the main thing, the main issue for the Czech ambassador to India, is searching himself through India. As the ambassador of the Czech Republic in India, he must be aware that he is not representing only the Czech Republic to India. There in the Czech Republic, there is a huge community of people who are interested, who know about India, who are friends of India, and who are interested in India not only in a commercial way but in a philosophical way, about what comes from India on the level of thoughts. So it is up to me just to say thank you to you, because it is thanks to your interest that you are helping to spread the knowledge of the Czech Republic in India, so that in India the Czech Republic is as known as India is known in the Czech Republic. I was very happy to take patronage over this celebration because I knew that this way I could get an invitation here. When I get invited here, I feel like being at home in India. Once more, thank you, and I must convey the greetings from the Indian ambassador to the Czech Republic, Mr. Kumar. I was talking to him, and he was very explicit that I have to convey his greetings and his thanks for all that you are doing for India. So as I’ve said, Your Holiness, welcome to the Czech Republic and feel at home here as much as we feel at home in your country. Thank you, Your Holiness. Host: Your Holiness, welcome to the Czech Republic. Thank you very much for your closing words, Dr. Kmoníčku, and thank you for the greeting. Dear Dr. Koníček, thank you very much for your kind words and for conveying the greetings of His Excellency the Ambassador. I would like to invite Mr. Vivek Odža, the President of the Committee of the Czech Vishwa Gurudeep Hindu Mandir. It is up to him to open the program officially in the name of the organizers. Mr. Vivek Odža: Dear brothers and sisters, I welcome all of you here. Jeho Excellence, pan Kmoníček. I welcome His Excellency and Mr. Kmoníček. Jeho Svatost, Svāmījī. His Holiness, Svāmījī. And all of you. Now you can translate into Czech, yes? Thank you very much. I will try to tell something about Mahāśivarātri. We are celebrating this function for the fifth time; you could say it is a fifth anniversary. Most Hindu festivals are not there for their myth and color, but Śivarātri is a night dedicated to prayers and contemplation. Of course, when Lord Śiva is worshipped, there is joy all around. But it is not just joy; it is bliss that is achieved through Brahmā-realization. When Lord Śiva is seen in all animate and inanimate, let us all take advantage of this sacred time and remain engaged in worship, prayer, and meditation on Śivarātri night. Dedicate this Śivarātri night to prayer and worship. May our practice bring us to peace within the self. This peace multiplies and affects the world around us. Let this night not just be a night of wakefulness. Let this night be a night of awakeness for you. The one who drinks elixir is called Lord, and he who drinks poison is called God of all gods. For the Lord of darkness, Lord of nothingness, Lord of emptiness, Lord of the Tāṇḍav, Lord of the birth and death of the universe, let us all join together in praying to Lord Śiva for the happiness of all beings. May the auspicious light of Lord Śiva fill each and every heart with peace, healing, and spiritual illumination. May today’s Mahāśivarātri bring blessings and fulfillment to you all. Jai Mahādeva. And now I will request Swāmījī that we start with Pūjā and Abhiṣeka. Host: Thank you, Mr. Oja, Panditjī, His Excellency. First, I welcome you as a former ambassador to India and now at the President’s Office, and my dear brothers coming from the Embassy of India. Second Secretary Rajeshjī, welcome. Bless you, and also sending blessings to His Excellency the Ambassador-in-Chief and the whole embassy members. Dear brothers and sisters, it is indeed a very divine evening, and we are fortunate ones. Now we did invite Gaṇeśjī, then Śiva. Now we have to do the formalities for Śivjī. Then there will be dance again by Bhakti Devī. Adoration to Bhagavān Śiva. The word "Lord" is too little. A lord can also be a house lord. So the word "Lord" for God is too little. Therefore, "God" is good, or "Bhagavān" is good. Pūjā Abhiṣeka. In this Abhiṣeka, we will now have the Pañcāmṛta. There are many different kinds of Amṛta: Charaṇa Amṛta, Jñāna Amṛta, Bhajana Amṛta. Amṛta means five nectars, and these five nectars come together to become the nectar of immortality. With this, we bathe Śiva as a liṅga. Liṅga means the entire universe; this is the embodiment of the entire universe because He is the first one. We will speak about this afterward because, again, the Panditjī will say, "Swamiji, you talk too much." Now we invited Śiva; He is here. Gaṇeśa is here. Until the Pūjā is not finished, nobody should move. You all have the opportunity to come and perform the Abhiṣeka. I will demonstrate, and then you will all come. After that, we will have lectures again, alright? Good. Oṁ Tryambakaṃ Yajāmahe Sugandhiṃ Puṣṭi Vardhanam Urvārukamiva Bandhanān Mṛtyormukṣīya Mā’mṛtāt Oṁ Tryambakaṃ Yajāmahe Sugandhiṃ Puṣṭi Vardhanam Urvārukamiva Bandhanān Mṛtyormukṣīya Mā’mṛtāt Oṁ Tryambakaṃ Yajāmahe Sugandhiṃ Puṣṭi Vardhanam Urvārukamiva Bandhanān Mṛtyormukṣīya Mā’mṛtāt Inside is pañcāmṛta, and you will just pour it on, and we sing, "Oṁ tryambhakaṃ vyādyamāheśa," and then we can also sing, "Oṁ namaśivāya. Oṁ tryambhakaṃ vyādyamāheśa, sugandhi puṣṭi vardhanaṃ, urvā rukāmiva bandhanān." I bless you in the name of Bhagavān Śrī Śiva. I pray to the Almighty to bless this golden city, this beautiful country, the Czech Republic. From here, this is now the center of the universe, where Śiva is sitting, is the center. May this Czech Republic spread love, peace, and harmony for the whole world. So please be part of the ceremony and perform the abhiṣeka. I will come back to you very soon. Thank you. I had one appointment. There was a promise that Sattva Purī and Sanjīvanī organized one Śiva Mahāśivarātri program separately, so they came to me, and I said, "Okay, I will come." I was there for half an hour. Next time, it should be together. That is why I just kept for half an hour, but you did good. You are doing your saṅkalpa. You invite Śiva in such a way and with very nice mantras. Śivarātri. There are many stories, many tales about Śiva. Often I speak in my speeches about Śiva. It is very interesting, and it is not a fairy tale. It is a reality. Everyone is born. Everyone has a father and mother, but only one who is Śiva has no mother and no father. So how did it happen? That is a very interesting thing. We come to this point. I attended a conference on the 18th of February. I was invited to a scientific conference. Many scientists came from around the world, and it was organized by Gulabjī Kotharī, the editor of the Rajasthan Patrika newspaper. Some of you know his father also, Kapurchan Kulish. He was in this hall as well. The conference was on Vedas and Science. Many scientists were talking about this. One or two scientists touched this point, which I am going to tell. They did not tell it in detail. It goes about space. We can calculate the life of the sun, the existence of the sun, the moon, planets, our Earth, etc. But no one can tell how old this space is. This is a very interesting and significant space, which is a part of our body from the five elements; it is one part of our body as space. The second point is consciousness. We also do not know how old consciousness is. Consciousness is beyond this space. Or is space beyond consciousness? Is consciousness within space, or is space within consciousness? There must be a line, a border. But it is beyond our imagination. That miracle we do not know. Between both space and consciousness, there must be something which is holding them together, keeping them separate, and that is energy. That energy in the universe—how old is that? We do not know. Žádné touhy. Nic nezmůže. Začalo stvoření? So, between the two is that energy which is holding them together, like cement holds bricks together. That we call... the word comes: yoga. Yoga means not here, but I am talking about āsanas, prāṇāyāmas, and meditations. This is a way to yoga. Yoga means union. It becomes one. Oneness. So uniting, harmonizing, balancing. Between these two, space and consciousness, where the energy begins, there is a kind of movement, and that is called resonance. From time to time, energy is life, and what is moving becomes life. So the Veda said, "Eko’haṁ bahu syām"—"I am one, and now I will multiply." Who said, "I will multiply"? Who is there? Ekoham bahuśyāmī. The will of God, thy will will be seen. But there is no God. God’s definition comes after; when we speak "God," we put God in limitation. There is God and there is devil, there is heaven and there is hell. We are dividing. No, we should go beyond further. We go so further, but it is said: "I am one, and I will multiply," because we do not have any other word. In that situation, at that time, resonance—and that resonance is called nāda. That is Nāda Yoga, sound. And that nāda is a universal nāda which is called Aum. It is not so easy to give a definition of Aum. That is a movement of the energy. To je pohyb energie. And there, through this, the space gives that energy to the consciousness, where the consciousness begins to illuminate. Illuminate means not like this light, but illumination is something like a life, their entire universe, where the fire element awakes. And it is there first who collects the entire energy from the energy essence as one person. We can say only one person, and that we call Śiva. That is called Svayambhū, who has manifested Himself. Now, when the light comes, illumination comes, that time we call a flame, jyoti. Can you imagine the whole universe begins to spark? Such a big flame, and there, this life, the consciousness—there begins then the life. So Śivarātri—last year I had Śivarātri worship in Australia. I told them this is not only the story about one hunter. It must be different. In this one year, I was meditating, thinking, researching with my meditation to come to this point: Śiva, Rātri. Śiva and Rātri. Rātri means night. Night means dark, so it is "Tamaso mā jyotir gamaya"—lead us from darkness to the light. And so, from this dark space, through the night, resonance of the Aum, it begins to give the light. So the night turns into the light. Namaḥ Śivāya. Aum Namaḥ Śivāya. Namaḥ Śivāya. Aum Namaḥ Namaḥ. Therefore, is it Tamasomā Jyotirgamaya. And therefore we say, "Tamaso mā jyotir gamaya." Then in the Ṛg Veda, the mantra comes, "Oṁ Tryambakaṃ Yajāmahe Sugandhiṃ Puṣṭi." And therefore, in the Ṛg Veda comes this mantra. So is the meaning of Śivarātri. If you have any questions, you are most welcome. And now, otherwise, in honor to Śiva, Bhakti Devī is going to perform a devotion to Lord Bhagavān Śiva with her dance and wish you a very blessed Śivarātri. The light within you is Śivarātri. Your soul, your Jīvātmā, is what we call the Svayambhū. The body is the different ātmā. Beyond jīvātmā is ātmā. Śivarātri is so deep. Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān, Nākeśvara, Mahādeva kī sanātana dharma kī. Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya, Namaḥ Śivāya. Namaḥ Śivāya, Namaḥ Śivāya. Sláva Pánu Śivovi. Jsi oceán. O Pane, Śiva, ty jsi v a energie. They are united within you in the form of Śiva Liṅgaṃ. The holy river Gaṅgā flows from your hair. Please be merciful to me and ferry me across the ocean, the worldly ocean. You are absolutely, perfectly pure. You are the greatest. You are above all the worldly matters. You are the source of endless joy. All cosmos is like a dress unto you. You are the one who is giving Mokṣa, liberation. Now we have to go to the meditation. Relax and close your eyes. Be aware of your being here. Feel your presence. This hall is full of the divine energy of Svayambhū. Enter into your inner space, the chidākāśa—space within thy consciousness. Within this space, observe through your awareness. Bring the awareness of your being here on this earth. You are a part of the Svayambhū. Light and resonance. Endless within thyself. Within ourselves is infinity. We will chant the Mahāmṛtyuñjaya Mantra, and this is a manifestation of the resonance in your consciousness. Be aware, be one with it. We will chant the Mahāmṛtyuñjaya Mantra slowly. First I will chant, and then you will follow me. Feel, concentrate, be aware of your inner space. Forget all the worldly sorrows and attachments. Just be the light thyself. You are the light in the entire universe. Relax. It is a blessing of Śivarātri in the presence of the Svayaṃbhu. Let your consciousness be filled with the resonance of this Mahāmṛtyuñjaya Mantra. The whole consciousness is filled with this divine vibration, the resonance of the Mahā Mantra. Feel within thy space, in the whole body. Mṛtyo śītārambhakam yajāmahe sugandhe pustivārdhanam. We adore you, and we are thankful. Being, thy presence with us. O merciful one, remove all the negative energy from my body, from my thoughts and feelings. Bless my whole physical and mental body to become healthy. Bless me with a happy, healthy, and long life. Deva Dī Dev Svayam Bhūr, we adore Thee for Your presence. Whenever we remember, you please bless us with your divine darśan. We adore you, worship you, Lord Sadāśiv, Svayambhū. Let your energy be within us, and please, in the form of the liṅga, just merge into the whole universe. Thank you for being with us. Always protect us. Oṁ Tryambhakaṁ yajāmahe sugandhiṁ puṣṭivardhanam, urvārukamiva bandhanān mṛtyormukṣīya māmṛtāt. Oṁ śāntiḥ, śāntiḥ, śāntiḥ. Imagine you are in your space, in that endless space, beautiful light, blue, dark, dark blue light in the sky. We observe while singing His divine name. Namo Śivāyom, Namo Śivāḥ, Namo Śivāyom, Namo Namo Śivāyom, Namo Namo Śivāy, Har Har Bho Namo Śivāyom, Namo Namaḥ Śivāya, Om Namaḥ. Deveshwar Mahādevakī Alakh Purījī Mahādevakī Deep Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān Satguru Svāmī Madhvānand Bhagavān Satī Sanātana O Gajānand Mahārāj, bless us and protect us. We worship you. You are the light of our life. Jai Gaṇeśa, Jai Gaṇeśa, Jai Gaṇeśa. Jai Gaṇeśa, Jai Gaṇeśa, Jai Gaṇeśa. Śrī Gaṇeśa, Śrī Gaṇeśa. Oṁ Śānti, Śānti, Śānti. Wish you all the best. Pleasant evening. Good night. And all the best. Thank you. Thank you. Hari Om. Hari Om. But next time you should organize the program together so that I do not have to go there and there and there. Okay? So next time I will come only to one program, which is under the Yoga and... Of course. Our Vishwa Guru Deep Hindu Mandir, Czech Hindu Society, that is going to the religious festivals; the other is going to yoga. I will try to blow. I am coughing, so I do not know if I have prāṇa inside. I will try to get some air. I do not know if there is enough water inside, because I have a cough.
