Keep balance while you are practicing

Yoga is a lifelong practice for body, mind, and spirit. It is an ancient science for health and self-realization, not merely physical exercise. Many misunderstand it, turning it commercial, but true yoga overcomes stress and brings peace. It is for all ages and walks of life, a daily system like eating or breathing. Practice must be balanced, without competition or strain, and includes postures, breath, and meditation. Breath harmonizes the body, and the heart works loyally; we must care for it. The body is a temple for the inner self, which dislikes aggression and falsity. Spirituality is devotion—a higher, respectful love—not a temporary, misused emotion. True devotion leads to oneness and God realization, harmonizing life and family.

"Health is the first wealth."

"Yoga should be for every walk of life."

First, I will chant Om and a mantra to harmonize the energy, create peace, and invoke spirituality. Just relax. If you know these mantras, you can chant with me. We will chant Om, and then the peace mantra. Deep inhale. Oṁ asato mā sat gamaya, tamaso mā jyotir gamaya. Mṛtyormā amṛtaṁ gamaya. Sarveṣāṁ svastir bhavatu. Sarveṣāṁ śāntir bhavatu. Sarveṣāṁ pūrṇam bhavatu. Sarveṣāṁ maṅgalam bhavatu. Loka samasthā sukhino bhavantu. Nāhaṁ kartā. Prabhu, deepa karta, Mahāprabhujī, deepa karta hi keval śānti. Lead us from the darkness to the light. Lead us from the reality to Reality. Lead us from mortality to immortality. Bless us with peace, harmony, good health, and completeness. May the whole world be in peace and harmony. We are not the doer. God is the doer. Only God is the doer. Peace, peace, peace. This was our peace mantra. Very good evening, dear sisters and brothers. Happy to see you again in this hall. Our subject is always yoga: what we can achieve and what we understand about yoga. We know in the last year many things happened regarding yoga, good things. It was declared by the United Nations: the 21st of June, International Day of Yoga. And it was observed, not only practiced, around the whole world, in all 180 countries. There were big programs and festivals, and this year will be again. That was the work of Modi, and he brought this to the awareness of world governments. Yes, indeed, yoga is a science, an ancient science, the oldest one. Science of body, mind, consciousness, and the soul. First of all, it is said, "Pahala Śuk Niroghī Kāyā." The first health is the first wealth. Some philosophers said, "Health is not everything, but everything is nothing without health." Now we know that yoga became a part of the world in human life, but many people misunderstand, and they present yoga in a way which is not according to the yogic path. So it is said, when we plant some good trees or something we are planting, then weeds also grow. When we give water to our good plants, the weed also gets water and also grows, and sometimes the weed takes over. So this was declared: it will be understood, you are very wrong. Yoga is going in the direction of the commercial. Different things now in India and around the world, those yoga teachers who had five, six years of training, diplomas in yoga, they are leading now the yoga centers, and soon people will realize what yoga is now. So it is not only the physical exercises, but more it is towards our mind, the mental, to overcome the stress, to overcome the tensions, to overcome certain diseases, and to get peace in the mind. Mahatma Gandhi said, "There is no way to peace, but peace itself is a way," and that’s it. So, "Yoga in Daily Life," which you got today, the subject "Yoga in Daily Life," this is a beautiful name. It is for every country, for every culture, understandable yoga in daily life practice, every day yoga. The Yoga in Daily Life is a scientific system; it is a system. And the Yoga in Daily Life also has teacher trainings for a few years, not only for 10 days. Many people go to somewhere, India or somewhere, for holidays, a retreat, and come back with a yoga certificate that "I’m a yogī." Well, it’s not so. To practice yoga and to understand yoga, these are very serious things. And it’s not difficult, it’s very easy. Yoga is not only designed for the young kids or till the age of 30 or 25, that’s all, that you are twisting your body like rubber. But yoga should also be for people who are 80 years old, 90 years old, 100 years old. I knew one elderly person, she was 103 years old in New York, in an old home, and she was teaching yoga there, one hundred three years old. Unfortunately, ten years ago she passed away at the age of 105, but there was some kind of accident. I met her. I went to that old home and gave a lecture about yoga, and she was there, and she introduced me, and she said she had her master from India, and he used to say, "Then you have yoga: use it or lose it. I gave you the science of yoga; you shall use it. If you don’t use it, you will lose it." And that was for her a mahāmantra, and she was practicing until the last day of her life, and teaching, and was so... beautiful, simple exercises, what she was doing, I was admiring her, how she is doing. So yoga should be for every walk of life. There are exercises for young children, for school children, for college students, for university students, for workers, for retired people, for seniors, for citizens, etc. And so, Yoga in Daily Life is that system which is designed for a lifelong program. This program is not only for one, two days, or three months, or one year; you work, and then you say, "No, it is finished." No, it is a lifelong practice. It is a lifelong program, like God designed in our body a lifelong program to eat, to drink water, nourishment, movement, breathing, etc. So it is not that you said, "Okay, I will..." Eat now, three, four years, and then not anymore? Is enough? No, that’s nothing. Or I drink one liter of water and finish. I don’t need any more. No, again, after a few hours, you will be thirsty. Sleeping, relaxing, breathing, eating, drinking, movements, this is a very natural thing in life, and that is what we say, that you should utilize yoga in daily life. Many people do such postures, but if you ask them, a person who is above 50, they will say, "Yeah, it’s beautiful, very good, but it’s not for me," and they don’t practice. And if they will practice, then the orthopedic hospital will be overfilled. So, it’s not in yoga; there’s no challenge, no competitions, it’s only for young children to see how they are doing. Good. So, I have here some demonstrators today, and if they can come here, who is demonstrating? Here is somebody here, yeah. Look, my God, the good. They are young children coming. Okay, well, you are not so young, but it’s going, yeah. Mukta David, the Dr. Mukta, maybe so first do it, cut open on body warming, so you just do it. I will speak. So when we do any kind of exercises, first we shall relax and then do slowly what we call the dynamical movements for the body warming. And this is a very dynamical movement, it’s very good and easy. Everyone can do that. We call it khaṭupranām. Now it looks very simple and very easy and very good, sorry, but an 80-year-old person can’t do it, and therefore, let’s do for a 90-year-old person, and that’s called Marjari. So, please, it is a cat pose. The most beautiful, flexible back has a cat, and this is called cat pose, Marjari. And many tensions in our body, many problems in our body, are depending on the stress. The tension on the trunk of the body, and so this posture or this movement, when the cat is sitting a long time, stands up and then stretching like that and making back up, so this releases a lot of tensions, a lot of tensions. Now there are some people who are maybe 50 years old or so, you take the chairs, please. Here, okay, bring the chairs, two chairs, please, boys. So, this is, let’s say, for the person who is disabled or very stiff, can’t move, or can’t do the exercises, as we call it. I would like to practice yoga, so I am showing you today yoga in daily life, in every life, that everyone can benefit, everyone. And so, the first exercise is called Sarva Hitāsana. Sarva means all, hita means good, good for all. Also, stretch your hands and raise your hands up above the head, and slowly exhale, bring hands near the shoulder level, and hands down. It seems very simple, and it is very simple, very easy, but the effect is more than we think. If you have a shoulder operation and the doctor tells you, or the physiotherapist tells you, to raise your hand up, you say, "No, I can’t." You can. Oh, you see, the healthy one can go like this, this is just nothing. But when you have problems or pain, then you know what the movements mean. And these kinds of movements are very, very valuable. So once more: one, two, three, and four. And we do also with the breaths, who have problems with the heart, circulation, and the lungs. Yeah, we are young all here, no, including myself, and we have good lungs and we can breathe good. But someone has a big problem to breathe. So again, inhale. Inhale and exhale, stay there. Inhale up, exhale, relax there. Inhale and exhale, hands sidewards. One, stretch your hands till the shoulder level, then up. Fold your palms. It is very easy, but for someone it is very hard, and you cannot go like this. Is it pain? So... But it’s not only to bring the palms together. When we have the palms here, then stretching all the side muscles, and you can’t imagine how good an effect we have on our trunk of the body and our muscles, shoulders, arms. It’s beautiful. And slowly, again. Come here, side and go down. It looks simple. Maybe you were thinking that today we will go and make a yoga and levitation. Levitation I will show you on Monday, yes, from the Heathrow, yes. So, so again, now you do also, please, yes, that’s... Why are you sitting on the chair? So, can I have a moment? Hands down, please. Thank you. You just—you look this side. Sit like that. Leave the chair, at least, but sit on the chair. Look, turn this side, and you turn this side. That’s it. It’s okay so that your hands are not touching each other. So, one, body straight. Two, fold your palms. And palms, you see? But not like this. Straight. More and more. Two. Three. This is a three. And four, touch your fingers to your shoulders here. And keep your fingers here. Do not move away from here. And touch your elbows together. Now go up and back. Your shoulder blades should touch each other. Down and up. Yes, go ahead. When your elbows come up, you are inhaling. And exhale. Go ahead. Now, go in the other direction. Change the direction. Perfect. Yes. Hands down. Now again, hands sidewards. We sit straight. Suppose that your pencil falls down on the ground, and so you go down and catch it. And come up. Oh, it fell to the other side. And once more, middle, and other side, and middle. Hands down. Yeah, now you can. Turn to my side, sit please, this direction, okay? And hands on the knees. Now, suppose, make your hands like you are working on the computer, please. Now, what to do? So, just for a half minute or one minute long, you should not do your boss will send you at home, so interlock the fingers here behind the head and on the chair. Lean and look on the sky or the ceiling. Good, and touch your elbows. Impossible? That’s it. We are practicing yoga, but now we are doing this one posture. It is called Mayūrāsana, Peacock. Yes, and very good. Thank you. Now, you don’t know how to come back. So now, what do you think of somebody 80, 90 years old? And we ask him or her to do this Peacock posture. Well, let’s do the Śīrṣāsana, it’s not a difficult one, not a difficult one, but for this age it is good. I have one disciple who just passed away a few, one month or one and a half months ago, and he was nearly 90, and he was doing even now head standing and everything. So this is also part of yoga in their life. After practicing three years, so go slowly back. The headstand is one of the best postures and best exercises, the king of all exercises, all postures, because here lots of blood circulation comes towards the brain. The face, eyes, all these Jñānendriyas, the knowledge senses. This Śīrṣāsana, head standing, develops the memory, and especially for the students who are studying, not only one day before examination, but everyday practice is very, very good. But in the beginning, if you do this, you can damage something in your brain, or in your neck, or in different parts of the body. Also, don’t overdo. There was in Slovakia one practitioner, and he was my disciple, but he was doing these exercises. He wanted to do something more, so he was doing this headstanding and would like to know how long he can, after 45 minutes, he fall down? His age was 68, and he became unconscious, and they took him with ambulance to the hospital. And after two, three days, he became normal. The doctor asked him, "Sir, what you did?" He said, "I was doing head standing for so long. I wanted to know, 45 minutes, I was standing on the head," so the doctor said, "Very okay, it’s good, but now you should know, for standing is the legs, not the head." So, postures, we need a balance and not too much maximum, maximum. If you are very good practice, then 10 minutes, otherwise five minutes, two minutes, you can repeat two, three times. So this is also part of yoga in daily life, but after training you understand. Good. So which one you are going to do now? You are going to do the chakrāsana. This is... very nice. Sometimes a yogī uses the breeze, you know. The master, when he goes, and the master cannot jump so big, channelling then disciple state like this. And the master practices every day, only till a certain age. After three weeks, you are practicing yoga and doing the chakras. Then relaxation is very important, either you sit in meditation posture or lie down after exercises. Relax. Relaxation gives us more benefit. If we don’t do the relaxation, then there’s not so much effect for or in meditation, or in yoga, sorry. So, sit in meditation. So. Any posture which is easier for you, this chin mudra, touching these two fingers, thumb and index finger. Now they are using it in many rehabilitation centers and in hospitals, these two fingers, and move them like this, roll the fingers. It gives you immense relaxation, immense, and there is another exercise which they are doing. I was now in one university, and they have research work on yoga, naturopathy, and Ayurveda, and so on. So they gave an exercise. It’s very, very good. Immediately, the stress goes away. So this exercise is very expensive to learn. Yeah, it cost a lot of money, but today it is gratis. So take your left palm. Yes, that is something, and touch your index finger or middle finger to the whole of your palm and very gently move like this. Soon, you will see there is some stone, and you are rolling the stone on it. Yes? Not hard, very gentle. And if you close your eyes and feel the sensation from here, the whole body goes completely relaxed, very good. Okay, so this is called mudrās, or the energy here. If you now do it only like this, thumb and index finger, you will feel very soon like you have a little stone between your fingers. So this is influencing our whole brain activity. That’s why they are sitting in this posture. Spirituality is that: God and the individual, jīvātmā or ātmā and paramātmā. The aim of yoga is to attain that self-realization, and so this mudra and relaxation. Meditation. So open your eyes. Meditation is that practice in yoga which releases, what is that? Tension. So when we meditate, our brain is relaxing, and it is said the brain is expanding. And so the tension is gone. If you have the tension, then the brain is squished. So many verses of God, and that’s what they call the workaholic people have this. So when we concentrate, close your eyes and you concentrate, it is relaxing and best is that you concentrate on that heartbeat between the chest here. If you concentrate on the eyebrow center, many people try to give tension here to see something with closed eyes. God said, "I gave you the eyes to see. Why do you close them and then see? You see nothing." But the people, they want to know, "I will see something here." Okay, please look. So, concentration here creates the tension. If you know how to meditate, when you meditate, you should not give attention at the eyebrow center. So many people, they close your eyes but looking up like this, said, "Master, I see the thing." I said, "Yes, because your eyes are closed. Open eyes, but they give the tension to the eyeball, the turning eyeball, upside." To see something here behind the forehead, the ball here, then you will get a headache, you will get tension, you will become restless. But if you go down to the heart, immediately the brain activities come normal and relax. So, meditation in the heart comes from here down to this part, and when you have to think something and work, then come from here to here, so this is both: the heart and the brain have to be coordinated in a way, and that’s meditation, relaxation, the prayers. So that supports us, and we come to know what is the cause of our problems. If we know the cause of problems, then we try to solve them. But when we don’t know how to solve them, that is the meditation. So, postures, relaxation, and meditation. In between is something very important. That is breath. Breath is life, and life is a breath. We can live without food for some weeks. We can live for some days without water, but we can live maybe some seconds or minutes without breath. So breath, that is prāṇa breath, is harmonizing, balancing, and controlling the whole body system, and that is the breath, and with the breath, the heart. So the heart is one of our best friends. Or, best of our workers, from our life in the mother’s body, the heart begins without any holidays, day and night. It doesn’t matter where we are—maybe under the water, in the aeroplane, running, jogging, skiing, dancing, or sleeping—our heart is very loyal to us. Constantly working for us, did you ever say to your heart, "My dear heart, now you relax"? The heart will say, "It’s nice of you, but I have a duty God gave me. For you, I should work. To rest, the time will come sometime." So the heart, our heart, this heart is our life. It’s only a pump, but this pump is very important. This pump and the breath, these two are very, very close working, and therefore we shall take care of the breath and how to breathe, how to relax at the same time, what we can do good for our heart, because he will not stop, he will not relax, he will not follow you in that. Because the heart will say, "Do something good, which I feel good in my heart." Good air, oxygen, good food, good movements, so the heart is happy. So when our heart is happy and healthy, the whole life is beautiful. So it doesn’t matter what you think about the heart, but now the heart is God. Still, if something happens, we say, "God, please help. God, please help." So our body is our living temple, and within this temple is living our real self, God, whom we have not seen yet. We know there’s a God. We read, we speak everything. But still, it is someone who is inside. And that one doesn’t like aggression, doesn’t like jealousy, doesn’t like anger, doesn’t like to lie, doesn’t like to hide. Many people are doing something, hiding. When you are hiding, then your heart will suffer. The consequences will come back one day. So, but you think, "Oh, I can do this. He don’t know this, or she don’t know this." One day, it will come in the front of you, spirituality. And that is a call. Spirituality is called devotion. Now, many people, we are taking the word devotion as a love. "God is love, and love is God" is very easy to say. That God is love, and love is God, and that’s why we said we should love. Love is the best, and they misunderstand people now. Therefore, instead of "God love," we should put devotion, respect. That is the highest love, the spiritual love. Now, when people want to talk about love, then they do something like physically with a body or something, which is they are putting the divine as in, "God is love and love is God," that energy, that devotion. We put it as a selfish for ourself, and the person who hides this person who have this weakness, but using this word "God" is the best. Love the God, love everyone. It is a God love, that is a God. The love is harmony, love is peace, love is divine. These words are too much used nowadays, and that’s why too much misused. And that, you see, there was a... it’s called the one Valentine’s name day, the day for Valentine. And Valentine was such a good person, so he was happy, so he was giving flowers to everybody, that’s all. But so misunderstood. So now, of course, in your country here, maybe it is, people are fed up, like in... In India, my God, many, many marriages break, many, many thousands, or maybe billions. That person who loves another person who is married, but that day, putting it in the newspaper, "I love you," and name, and this love is a God, and you are the God, and I love you, and then her husband, her wife reads this and tells her husband, "What is this?" Yes, or nowadays they don’t want to put so... so "s" is Swamiji, "M" is measurement, and "s" is... Supreme So SMS, then that makes a big, big problem in many, many countries. I don’t know, I was not there in China, but on Christmas Day, it’s the day Jesus was born as love, as peace. And so in China they said, in many parts of China, they said Jesus is born as love and for love. This day you can do anything; there is nothing prohibited. And so many, many families are unhappy. So this is how many people write too many things. Love this, love that, love this, this, that. Now we have to have a little bit of devotion and help. That is it. Well, so the Yoga in Daily Life is to make life more comfortable, healthy, relaxed, and long, and for God realization. And that realization comes through the devotion, and that devotion, but this kind of love nowadays is that it’s a temporary love, yeah, temporary love. Suppose this girl was having another husband or a friend, and the next week she’s died, or not died, fell in love with others, so that love is dead. This love is awakened. This is that. So that means you did not understand the love. You did not understand God. This is only on the surface, and that will always bring problems and suffering. Love is in the heart. Devotion is in the heart, and that is oneness, not here and there and there and this. So for every little thing, don’t use, please, this word "love, love..." And many people are writing this in everything that is too much, so yoga in their life said that you have only one, and that is God, that’s it. And that love is called devotion, bhakti. Bhakti... and there is this: who taught you this kind of love, what’s called the devotion? That is your master. He explained, he taught you. Now, if you misuse it, this, if you don’t follow this. It will take time, but the consequences, the fruits, will come after some years. When are the some years? You know, did you see the one green tree? Yes, you didn’t see the green trees in that. Green trees called mango, did you see the mango? And mango is full of juice, did you see that? Who did not eat mango? Tell me, please, hand up. Who did not eat the mango in England? There’s a mango growing, yes, and the mango has inside, so... sweet and good juice, yeah. And the seed of the mango is full of the juice, and we chew it, we lick it, beautiful. And when there’s no more juice on it, what do we do? Throw it in the garbage. Similarly, in the life, let it point till you have this juice, this mango. But then it is finished. Your husband will kick you out this side, or wife will cook in this side. Finish. That love is gone. Then always I thought, "This is a love is God. My wife is a god." But she’s so, please understand what I want to say. Everything has its place, everything has its limitations, and everything so divine is divine. That’s a devotion, bhakti, or in different languages, different countries, they have a devotion, a different name. But directing our feelings, our consciousness, our awareness to God, and that God we have not seen, but He is there. He’s inspiring us so our consciousness at the end will merge into that supreme, so this is yoga and daily life harmonizing in the family. Good relation in the family, if your wife and your husband, you husband and wife, have some kind of quarreling. Or not good, one day will be again okay. Don’t let, because one is happy to go somewhere else, but the other one is suffering. The other one is suffering. That suffering of that person is like a kind of curse for us. So you think that, "Oh, I’m happy with this person," but in reality the other one who is suffering, that is too much for your karma. This is like a curse, understand? So don’t think of you only, but think of others too. So anyhow, this evening we had a demonstration, meditation, and some discipline and principles. Tomorrow we will come with something very new. Keep your heart strong. And tell your intellect, "Wait, wait... please wait. Sir, wait." Yes, that’s it. We will see again, and I wish you a very good evening. If something I told you, and you didn’t like it, forgive me, please leave it here. God bless you. So I say your blessing. At the same time, I said your devotion, your respect, you are you deep nine. So we have to change the suffering world, healing. Tomorrow, I am coming. How to heal humanity? How to heal humanity. Tomorrow it will be coming. Thank you. Okay, you want to show some postures again? Okay, thank you. Tomorrow we will do.
