Learning in the Gurukul

A presentation on the Gurukul education system and its philosophical foundations.

"In our Gurukul, we have a different education. Not this modern education where they only want to work and earn money, earn money, earn money."

"The knowledge that has been taught in the Gurukul, according to the culture of India and according to the knowledge of the sages of India, we will do it."

A spiritual teacher speaks from the Om Shri Visva Dip Gurukul in Rajasthan, outlining the history and purpose of the traditional Gurukul system. He emphasizes education as a sacred, cultural duty focused on knowledge and morality over material gain, introduces the Gyān Putra scholarship project, and explains the significance of the students' Pitāmbara (yellow) uniforms. The talk is followed by an address from Mahāmaṇḍaleśvar Śrī Gyāneśvar Purī Jī Mahārāj, who discusses the logistical and ethical challenges of education in India, contrasting the Gurukul's holistic approach with modern, commercialized systems.

O sukhadam kevalam jñānamūrtim, dvandvātītam, gaganasadṛśyam. Tasmād ayam lakṣyam ekam, nityam, vimalam, achalam, sarvadhiḥsākṣibhūtam, bhāvātītam, mātriguṇarahitam, satgurutām namāmy aham. Oṁ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ... Alakpurījī, Mahādeva kī, Deva dī Deva, Deveśvara Mahādeva kī, Pūjya Bhagavān Dīpa Nārāyaṇa Mahāprabhujī kī, Hindu Dharma Samrāṭ, Satguru Svāmī Mādhāvanājī Bhagavān, Satya Sanātana, Bhārata Mātā kī, Blessed Self, Spiritual Seekers, Bhaktas, dear ones round the world, this message is coming from the Holy Land Bhārat, Jādan Rājasthān, Pālī, from the Gurukul. Guru Kul means that education center where the master, the Gurudev, is giving the knowledge. The schools, the colleges, the education centers, all began with the ṛṣis. There were no schools in the whole world. It was only taught by the great ṛṣis. And the first university in the world, where was it? Takshilā. In which country was Takshilā? In India. The first university was in India, Takshilā. Many, many things. In our Gurukul, Om Śrī Viśva Dīp Gurukul, the students are studying from nursery school, primary school, middle school, high school, and college. In this area of Rajasthan, we have one project, and many of you know it. It's called Gyān Putra. Our Gurukul adopts the students, the children, as a Manas Putra. One is the son of man, whom we love and respect like our son, and whether you call him the son of man or the son of knowledge. Because it is the duty of the father, the parents, to educate the child. The parents are the ones who give the education to their children. Now, according to the Indian education system, the school begins from the 1st of July. So now our students are coming. You can see many of our Jñānaputra, our students, in our hostel, are still coming. And you see them in the Pitāmbara dress, Pitāmbara like gold. Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa used to have Pītāmbara. And this Pītāmbara is the color of the flame of the fire. So the Vidyārthī, they are studying. They should not do any wrong things. They are sitting in the fire in this dress, and this dress will not let negative things come into your body and mind. So this is a very ancient uniform for the brahmachārī, i.e. vidyārthī, i.e. student. They have nothing to do except study. Those who study, the fruits of their study will come in the future. And in the future, you will be so happy that you had an education which is cultural, traditional, ethical, moral, and spiritual. Indian culture, Indian tradition, Indian education from ancient times were leading the world into peace and the divine. In the Indian education system, there is no aggressiveness. They were not aggressive. So, in our Gurukul, we have a different education. Not this modern education where they only want to work and earn money, earn money, earn money. It is very funny to earn only money. So, we have to do Gyānārjan, we don't have to talk about money. "We will study, we will earn money"—this feeling should not be there in the students, because that money which you think, that is in your knowledge, and that money is in your brain, it is a bank. It is deposited in this bank. From the hand, you can steal money and take it. You can steal a lot of money in the house. But in the mind, the knowledge, the money, no one can take it. That is why one of the students says, "I will study. I will get knowledge. When I grow up, I will give peace to my parents, my society, my village, my country, and the whole world." That's it. So Lakṣmī, money will run after you. You don't have to say that you want this much money. If your study is so good, then instead of five lakhs, they will give you fifteen lakhs to work in our company. It will take a month to get 15 lakhs. If I come, I will not be able to pick up 15 lakhs. Can I pick up 15 lakhs? Oh, that's a lot. So, it does not get picked up in the brain. 15 crores is so much that you cannot pick it up on your head. But that 500 crores will be deposited in your brain bank, and you can take as much as you want, and that money which is in your brain will never be finished. Like there is a source of water in the well, however much water you take out, good fresh water will keep coming. So the knowledge that has been taught in the Gurukul, according to the culture of India and according to the knowledge of the sages of India, we will do it. So the education, according to the Indian culture, the language, the first language, what we call it, is Sanskrit. Sanskrit is the mother of all the languages around the world, maybe two, three are not. Everywhere there are the words of the Sanskrit language in many, many, many countries. And also the culture goes from Bhārat. All these many countries, like Europe, were all under the glaciers. They were living here near the Himalayas and near the Indus Valley. Of course, Australia was different, but there in Australia also were the South Indians, which we call the Aborigines. So, Aborigines ke andar, wo unke andar wo mīrta hai, Jains, ki wo Bhārat kā hai, South India kā hai. To kahā hai ki sabse pahle mānav kī utpatti huī hai Tibet mein. Aur Tibet kā arth wo hai ki jo jahan par where there is a Mount Kailash. And which man was born first in Kailash? Svayambhū Śiv. He came back or not? That's why our country is so big that no one wants to leave it. Everything is in our country. And this country, in each and every piece of soil, is the home of the gods and goddesses. Chandanā hai mere deś kī mīṭī. Tappo bhūmi har grām hai. Har balā hai devī kī pratimā. Aur bachā bachā Rām hai. Phir kya kaam hai? Waha toh aaram hai. Waha aaram nahi hai. So I wanted to tell you that in our Gurukul, our Jñānaputra is here. They are coming, and we are welcoming them. And you are most welcome to help with the education. Thank you very much. And now I would like to give the words to our Mahāmaṇḍaleśvar, Śrī Gyāneśvar Purī Jī Mahārāj. Gyaneshwar Puri. Gyaneshwar. Gyan or Ishwar. If you get two, what more do you need? If knowledge and knowledge come together, then why should I be a fool? If knowledge and knowledge come together, then the soul becomes the witness of God. So now in English, Hindi, Sanskrit, and Croatian, language speaks at once. Vohī mā̃ mandresar bansaktā hai, betā. Four languages. Hindi, Sanskrit, English, Croatian, and maybe someone more. So our Gyanputras go, he will introduce our Gyanputras and our Brahmacharis of the Shastram. So, Gyaneshwarji, give the children that kind of suggestion and instructions that they get inspiration to study properly. SĀDĪP NAYAN BHAGVĀNĀ KĪ JAI DEVĀ DĪ DEVĀ DEVĀ ŚVARMA DEVĀ KĪ JAI HINDU DHARAM SAMRASMARA KṚṢṆA BHAGVĀNĀ KĪ JAI VIŚVĀ GURU MAMALAYĀSA PARANASAMAŚVĀMĪ SATYA GURU DEVĀ KĪ JAI OṂ GURUR BRAHMA. As you all know, our Śrī Viśvadīp Gurukul is a school for which, for the last, let's say 20 years, is educating the children. Some of them you can see here. It was Swamiji's project, which our dear Vishwa Gurujī started long back, because education in a country with such a huge population, like India, is very tricky. The system of Guru calls, which was used from the ancient times of ṛṣis, was still active in the beginning of the 19th century, but with the coming of the British to consolidate their power, they slowly dismantled this Gurukul system and started the English-based system. And, but also not for everybody, only for selected people, and so on. So, the story I'm telling you is from the end of the 19th century, and the first school, and actually university, was actually founded in 1885, which is quite late, in Bombay, and so on. So, this kind of school, which has very... limited approach left India quite, how to say, uneducated, and there were many schools, many children, many villages without any school or any kind of education. We know in Europe we have a different system of numbers. Croatia has 5 million people all together, which is... completely, when we put it in Indian terms, this is approximately one city. So India has, at the moment, 1.5 billion people. In the West, we cannot actually comprehend that; it's a really huge number. So it means we cannot comprehend these numbers, that in one village like Jadan, there can be at least 5,000 to 10,000 students. In the area of Marwara Junction, where our ashram is situated, there can be at least 50,000 to 60,000, if not more, children who are studying. So now, the problem is how to give education to all these children, because education takes money. Education requires money, education requires books, and so on. So, there are many, of course, the government is doing its best, and there are many NGOs, there are many societies which are helping, and one of the societies which Vishwagurujī formed is under the name of Gyānputra, which basically means the sons of the knowledge. So these people, these children, and the families to whom these children belong, they got free education, free books, and many free things. Now, it's not a question of only education, because nowadays in our Western-based education, because of so many subjects we have to study, it is actually the moral and thinking that is removed. Because to teach morality, it's actually the subject which is the base of all education, because first we get education from our parents, but now the parents go to work when you are three, four months old, and you go to some kindergarten. So in this gurukul, Swāmījī is trying to bring back this old tradition, this old Indian tradition of ṛṣis, in which morality should be included in our, how to say, in education. But from the beginning, not from the end. Not when you go to the university that you start to learn about what is morality and the different ways, and so on, but from the beginning. Because now, in our science projects, let's say, they can teach you how to make TNT, they can teach you how to make a bomb, a gun, or whatever. But they will not teach you why to use it and how to use it. They will teach you how to use it, but not why, not so. This is the basic problem which now we can see all around the world, with all the terrible things that are happening, so because the people have the knowledge how to use the things in a bad way, but they don't have the mentality to decide that this is good or not good. So this thing Swāmījī is trying to achieve in this Gurukul, to have accord, because the modern education is modern education. We have to have it to be competitive in this world. But still, on top of that, Gurudev is trying to put one more layer, which was actually there before, even in our country, but then now we have these changes in education. But everything is going for the globalization, how the people can move from one place to another, so the children are actually educated in a very short spectrum. Here, I had the opportunity to study with one teacher who was brought up in a gurukul system, and in a gurukul, they have studied all the Bhagavad Gītās and Rāmāyaṇa and Vedas and this and that, so they studied everything. So actually, I know, I have firsthand experience that I know that whatever studying, whatever learning in the gurukul. And our Pushpajī from Jaipur Ashram, from Jaipur Yog Sādhanā Ashram, whom you have met many times on the webcast, she has also studied in Gurukul, which is a completely different system of study than nowadays, which is very commercialized, so this kind of study we are trying to give to the children here, and these children will then hopefully try to improve the status of these villages which are around us. Because still the base of India is in the villages. More than 67% of the population lives in villages. Of course, this is changing, but the population, as you know, in India is huge, as I told in the beginning. So we are, Swamiji is trying very hard. It's of course very difficult because everybody wants to have computers, everybody wants to study, to have experiments with the chemistry or physics and so on. So this is, of course, a costly matter to pay the teachers. If you have good teachers, they require more money. If you have good equipment, this requires money, and so on. So that's why we are thankful to all the supporters, all the donors who gave the money for this project of Jñānaputra. It's 9 o'clock now, so maybe it's time to go, or it's time to study. The problem here is, generally in the whole world, this is the problem with studying, that all the people, generally the children, are thinking, "What does studying mean? The exam will come in December, the exam will come in March, the exam will come in April." Now, what study do I have to do? So, you do this: there are 365 days. Now, today, for six months, eat in a day: you eat four rotis in the morning, two in the evening, okay? Five, six. So in six months, how many days will it take? 180 days. In 180 days, five rotis a day, 900 rotis. So, okay, today in the morning we will make bandara, 900 rotis, everyone has to eat. Then, for six months, you are free from eating. Is it possible? It is such an ordinary thing. Now, what is it? Is it Nusratī Kālījī? What is it? It is not special. After six months, you will not get hungry. It does not work like this. So if you do not want it like this, then what are you thinking? That one day before the exam, you can study for 300 pages a day? You can study for 6 months in one night? Not even one night, but in two hours? Now, after leaving from here, we will sit at 9 o'clock, will give you an exam in the morning, and you will get 100% marks. Is it possible or not? It is very difficult, so you have to study daily. So you have to eat in pieces, like you eat in pieces. You can eat five rotis every day. You can also eat ten rotis. But you can't eat 900 rotis, so you can't read 900 pages every day. We also have children in Jaipur. They study in open studios. How will you read a book of 800 pages in 3 days? That's why the study that you are doing, if daily, every day, if you ask for an hour of study, then how much time has passed in 6 months? 180 has not happened yet. So how will you save 180 hours in a day? So that's why the study that you have to do, keep doing it in pieces. If daily you study an hour more, an hour, it will take two hours due to some miracle. I don't know what will happen, that now it can take three hours, so there is no tension. So when your marks will come, your tuition and tuition will not be required. Your IAS, IPS can be made like this. But if the others keep doing it in such pieces, if they try to do it together, then what will happen? Impossible. That's why you stay here in the ashram. There is no tension in the house. No parents tell you any work. So what will be your work? Study. That's why mother and father sent you here to study. And what do you do here? Enjoy, sleep, watch movies on mobile, YouTube, Facebook, everything happens. Why? When there is time to study, then study. Till the time our Gurujī comes, till then the school will run. And how can we make Gurujī happy? At least some way will come. If the way will come, then our Gurudev will also be happy. And our parents will not be happy? "My son has come, 95% is there." Anyone here who is 95%? 100%, 80%—that's why it doesn't happen that we study suddenly. Not only that, we have... Gyan Putra program, here we have also, with the blessings of our guru, there we have yoga programs here. And we have many of our students from the West who are coming and who are studying, some for longer times, some for shorter times. And this is just to see that learning never ends, and learning can also comprise the physical part, which we are trying to do here with the yoga, and the spiritual part with Swāmījī's teachings of the Rāmāyaṇa, Mahābhārata, and other Upaniṣads. So, definitely, we are an open university. We are open school. Of course, it's very difficult for many of us to get a visa, but still it's possible. So on this occasion of Guru Pūrṇimā, I would like to thank our dear Gurudev Viśwa Gurujī Viśwa Guru Swamiśwaran Purījī Mahārāj, who gave us this opportunity, who gave us this āśram, and this possibility to study Indian culture, to study yoga and to study old ancient traditions. With these words, I would like to finish, and I would still like to thank all of you who came. I would like to thank all of you who are donating and who want to donate, either by work and so on. Good, thank you. Thank you. And you see the art, and the life throughout the whole world. Now only the children of our Gurukul turn to the camera side. Only the Vidyārthīs turn to the camera side. Don't go close to the camera; you won't be able to see the child. You come here and stand. Okay, we will see when it is. Oṁ Tryambakaṁ yajāmahe sugandhiṁ puṣṭi-vardhanam, urvārukam-iva bandhanān mṛtyor mukṣīya māmṛtāt. Oṁ Tryambakaṁ yajāmahe sugandhiṁ puṣṭi-vardhanam, urvārukam-iva bandhanān mṛtyor mukṣīya māmṛtāt. Oṁ Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ. That's it. Look at me. Look at this camera. Can you see me? Can you see me? Stand behind me. Sit down. That's it. Thank you. So tomorrow, we will again have the webcast on another subject. Most probably, already in the school, when we have the prayers and all the students are there. Now is the time for prasāda. Can you see it? Yes. Time for prasād. So, come here once or twice a month. When I come, I will make you travel the world. From Swamiji Television.
