The Emblem and the Essence

True spirituality is found in practice, not in empty emblems or names. Many claim religious identity but ignore the core teachings. Jesus taught simplicity and warned against the worship of money, a principle now forgotten. Gandhi taught renunciation, but his name is used without following his example. This hypocrisy extends to all faiths. We become selfish, identifying with labels while being empty-hearted. Faithfulness begins with honoring parents and ancestors; without this, one cannot be faithful to God or others. Spirituality is individual, like love, and cannot be forced. The one God is perceived differently by all. Confidence in each other and in God is essential for a divine, natural world. Money is a human thought; it cannot be eaten. Self-sufficiency and community support are vital, as global systems destroy local livelihood. Do not lose confidence in God and ancestors. Yoga is beyond physical exercise; consistent practice brings health and reduces reliance on medicine. Contentment is the ultimate richness. Desire for more is a fire; the poor are those who want more, while the rich want nothing. Possessions are a burden that destroy inner peace. Earth provides for need, not greed. Inner peace, love, and happiness cannot be bought; they come through renunciation and service. The final prayer is for divine union.

"Money you cannot eat, but carrots you can eat."

"When you get contentment in your heart, all this other is just like dust."

We may say we believe in Jesus or in this or that, but unfortunately, Jesus has remained for us only an emblem. Jesus said to lead a very simple life. Business was not allowed. Money was not allowed. And when people began to make a business, Jesus said not to believe in this wrong god—meaning gold and money. But now we, so-called believers in Jesus, have forgotten that. We only use his name. Or consider Mahātmā Gandhi, what he brought to India and to the world. Does the present Indian government follow Gandhi? Yet they use Gandhi’s name always. When difficulty comes, they say, "Gandhiji, the emblem." And so it is with other religions too. What Kṛṣṇa said, what Rāma said, what Śiva said. We humans become very selfish, and just for society we say, "Yes, I am Hindu, I am Christian, I am Muslim, I am this." We are, unfortunately, empty-hearted; no one is there because our ancestors are not there. And when you are not faithful to your parents and ancestors, to whom will you be faithful? Then you are also not faithful to God. So if you are not faithful to your parents, how can we say you will be faithful to your partners, your friends, and your neighbors? Again, we have to bring mutual understanding. Let's say we are as we are, and we pray to God in that form, in that way, as we like. Because spirituality or God is very individual, not for all. Love, whom you want to love and marry, is very individual. You cannot force someone to go and marry this one, otherwise I will kill you. Okay? I don’t want to be killed, so I will do it, but not with the heart. And so, God for everyone is different and the same. Only one God is there, but in a different way. So, we have to give confidence again that we are not scared, we are not lost, we are not afraid of others, we do trust each other, and we trust God. Then our world will be again divine, a very natural way of life. Again, we have to come, don’t worry about your money. Forget it. Money? Who created humans? That’s it. So money is just thoughts of the human mind, that’s all. But humans can create more beautiful things; maybe different things will come. So what we need urgently is called... a piece of bread, so that we’re not starving. One American Indian said, "When the last tree will be chopped off and the last fish will die, oh human, then you will realize that you can’t eat your dollars." So money you cannot eat, but carrots you can eat, bananas you can eat. Fix what is growing in your garden, so cultivate something like that. Become self-sufficient. In the last two decades, the United Nations has been trying very hard, giving many, many conferences, and many NGOs are involved with one slogan: a sustainable world, sustainable development. But in this way, it cannot be sustainable development. There are so many supermarkets. What is Kapiti? Kapiti, Kapi, we coffee. Yeah, Kapiti, Kapiti, Kapitu, Kapiti, okay, thank you. Now, just to buy a little milk and something, you take a car and drive to the supermarket, which is 15 kilometers away. That milk, and some vegetables and cheese, what you buy, are a little quarter dollar cheaper. But how much petrol do you use, how much pollution do you create, and how much time do you waste? And the shop, which is in your community here on the next corner, is waiting. Maybe the customer will come, maybe the customer, no customer is coming. So this supermarket system has killed all this community’s business and the people who would like to live in this community. So I would suggest, dear brothers and sisters, support your community. Support every small business and help each other. Don’t worry if the global economies fall down or this. This has been many times in the last histories. Money is lost, nothing is lost. Health is lost, something is lost. But confidence is lost, everything is lost. People used to say "the corrector," but I now change today the word to "confidence." So don’t lose your confidence and confidence in God and your ancestors. Yoga is healthy, but yoga is not only physical exercises. It is more beyond this. But in difficult times, I tell you, yoga, that will help you more than anything or money. Health is not everything, but everything is nothing without health. And so the practicing of yoga in daily life here will help you to save your money even. How much money do you spend on medicine, going to the doctor, and insurance, and the time? Try, try yoga. In one week, you will realize, yes, you feel better. But in three years, you will say, "Oh, you feel like you were 15 years old." It is true, but only if you practice. So, call here many yoga students and yoga teachers, even here. Ask them, they practice every day. They say, "Yes, but I have to do some organization." They don’t practice. Otherwise, their condition will be different. Tons of theory is nothing compared with the practice. Every day, who is practicing yoga according to the yoga and daily life systematically, and meditation, the person looks completely different. And I wish you that you begin to practice. Those who call the yoga teachers, and some students, and the new ones, next time I will see the aura. The radiance of the healthy person is completely different. Completely different energy. So you will be more happy, and you will find inner peace. So it is said, "Gajadhana, bajadhana, aura ratana dhana, khān. Jaba āī śāntoṣa dhana, saba dhana ḍhūla samāna." Clear? Yes, that’s it. In ancient times, in India, we used to say the richness was for those who had many elephants. And elephants were coming full of gold, gajadhana, vajadhana. And they had golden birds, like we have some plastic hanging, you know. In modern times, all is plastic here. But he who was very rich had such golden things. And they had many, many diamonds and precious stones, mines. But when you get contentment in your heart, all this other is just like dust. So, who is very rich and who is poor? Poor are they who want to have more and more. When you have a hundred dollars, you wish perhaps for five hundred. When that comes, thousands. When that comes, millions. Millionaires want to be billionaires, and billionaires want to be more, and more, and more. This is like a desire, a fire, and you put petrol on it. The flame goes higher and higher. But contentment, that is the final richness of yourself. So, that one is poor who wants to have more and more, and that one is rich who doesn’t want anything. And therefore, again, I must tell you that Jesus said, "Those shall not carry." Do you follow him? Those who are believing in Jesus, even I don’t follow completely. I am carrying two suitcases with me: confidence. And Mahatma Gandhi said, "Renounce and enjoy." Renounce and enjoy. Who is the happy one? The one who renounces everything. Yes, you are happy to have this house. Then you want to have particular furniture. Then you want to have a particularly big television. Then you want to have that computer. Then you want to have, perhaps, different lights, everything. And then you want to have what we call the alarm system. And then we want to have one Doberman. Doberman, and then we want to have a license for the personal gun, and then we want to have sleeping tablets, and still we can’t live in peace. Gandhiji said, "Give up everything. You will not be worried about it at all. You will sleep peacefully. You will need no tablets." Everything. So as many things we have, we have a burden. And we have no peace within us. There is one nice story about one man. He was spiritually very highly developed, but still had attachment. So there is one place between India, Nepal, and China. There were people, a lot of people, who were doing magic things. They call it tantric, and it is a very rich place with a lot of gold there. So that one man, who was very spiritual but wanted to have a lot of gold, went there, and those who went there never came back because they, through their magics, destroyed them or made them slaves. And that’s the real story. It’s not just a fairy tale. So one man went there to take gold, and he packed his gold. And then there was, yes, one thing more: they were mostly women. Very powerful. Magic power. They had more. So though they were two daddies, they realized this man, a stranger, came, and they made him so, and he became a bull. They turned humans into the bull, or ox, and they put through his nose what? A big ring. And they used him for working in the field and there. He knows who he is, but the body is different. He had one disciple, and he came to know. He said, "Now I must go and liberate my master." Now the master is liberating disciples, but now it’s the opposite. People told him, "Be careful, otherwise you will be the next ox standing, the master." He said, "I will do my best." He comes there, and he had a very nice tilak, it is Indian like this, nice tilak and so. There were two ladies taking water from the water fountain, and he asked for the address of that particular house. And this lady said, "Better you go back." And he said, "Why?" And one of the ladies, he saw her foot. So to him, what he sees exactly is his face on her foot, saw. He was frightened. He said, "Well, thank you very much, and I’m sorry, and so... and you are divine, and this." But what to do? Can you help me? I actually came to take my master back. He was honest, and these two ladies said, "Yes, let him help this time." You know, God changes, sometimes in our favor. They told him what he should do and when he should enter this area. And then there are some different things which I will not tell you. Some ceremonies, rituals. He managed to take his master with some particular mantra. Again, his master became a human body, and then the disciples said, "Let’s, master, run, let’s go." But what master did? Five kilos of gold he carried on his shoulder, and they ran away. They came out of this territory. Now there’s no more fear. Like you cross this New Zealand border, hurry home, no problem. But if you have food with you, or chili with you, or spices with you, you know, the New Zealand border is very famous from the beginning, where the aeroplane starts till... You enter into New Zealand, and you are threatened. It’s very famous for all people. They are okay, anyhow. I’m not criticizing in that way. Be positive, boy. And the thing is that when you come to New Zealand, you find inside all kind of bugs and everything here, yeah, we are not allowed to bring one mango here with us, and you come and you buy the mangoes here. Mangoes don’t grow in New Zealand. How did this mango come in? Well, this is a global economy, okay? We call it Brahmaditya. Nasty? So, economy comes from the echo. Echo means only one, that is a spiritual subject. Next time, I will take talk economy. Well, master’s telling disciple, "Let’s run, it’s dangerous here." Master said, "Our disciples, say, ’Yes, sir, let’s run.’" Don’t. "Rest, we must go. It’s dangerous," he said. "Yes, sir." Now the disciple is thinking, "Why is the master constantly repeating, ’It’s dangerous, it’s dangerous’?" And then he said, "Master, can I carry your luggage?" He said, "Yes, take care. It’s very dangerous." I said, "Okay." And he touched it, it was gold. Aha! It is that which the Master says is very dangerous. They were walking, and the disciples threw gold somewhere into the water well. And Master said, "Let’s run. It’s dangerous." He said, "Yes, Master, all dangers are in the water well." And constantly, Master tells, "Let’s go. It’s dangerous here." And he said, "Yes, everything is in the water well." When they walked 50 kilometers or 100 kilometers, day and night, they didn’t rest. And the Master said, "Where is my luggage?" He said, "Master, it’s in the water well." "What? Are you crazy? I suffered so long in the life of the ox." He said, "Yes, sir, but money is dangerous. Money is fear." No more money, no more fear. So, as many things we have, we have problems. So Gandhiji said, "Renounce," and therefore what Gandhiji said, he did. He renounced everything. He had only one cloth here and one cloth on his shoulder, that’s all. And for walking, one stick, and wearing simple shoes, which he repaired and again repaired, and carried, and again his sandals, and his sandals are sold now in New York, and his very old sunglasses. How many millions, it was sold, simple, but best. So if you would like to be happy and peaceful, renounce, renounce... But there is another way of yoga called puruṣārtha, the four pillars of life. And this is then speaking in the other direction. And the first is called dharma: follow your obligation, your duty. Artha, money, wealth, but like this, that it is a sign: "Itnā deje jismeṅ kutumba samaya meṅ bhūkhā nahīṅ rahūṅ, āyā na bhūkhā jāye." O Lord, give me that much so that I and my family do not stay hungry, and if some guest comes, they do not go hungry. That is all. Otherwise, atti sarvatra varjayet, too much is everywhere prohibited. And again I must say, as Gandhiji said, Mother Earth has enough for everyone’s need, but not for the greed. So the greedy person is always unhappy and feeling lost and has no peace. The inner peace we cannot buy. Love, happiness, contentment, bliss—these are the universal principles. No one has a copyright over this, and you can’t buy it anywhere. God has given us freedom. Everyone has a right to be happy. Everyone has a right to feel love and to be loved. And everyone has a right to live in divine peace. So contentment or inner peace only comes when you have thoughts of renunciation. It happens, it will happen, it can happen, but I am not touched by any such thoughts or this thing. I should take care of my health so that I can serve my society, so that I can help my family, so that I can love and protect my environment, the societies, the forest, everything that I leave for others also, not for myself. But finally, O Lord, when I go from this world, let me enter into your divine light. And there is one beautiful song, which I will translate. One is praying to Lord Kṛṣṇa, Govinda. Oh Lord Krishna, Govinda means protector of the cows. Oh Lord Krishna, this is my prayer to thee, that I never forget your name. I will never forget you. I will never forget you. I will never forsake you. I will never forsake you. This name may I sing day and night. Govinda, Dāmodara, Mādhava iti, these are the names of Kṛṣṇa. Not only this, my lord, I have one wish. Bānsī, tum sāmne ho. Bānsī bajate mana ko lubhate. Time of my departure from this body. I have only one wish, Lord, that I see you in front of me, O beautiful Kṛṣṇa. Bānsī bajate, and you play your divine flute. Mana ko lubhate, you attract my mind and my consciousness, that it becomes one with thee. While singing, chanting, or repeating this name, Lord, I may renounce my body. This body is given as an instrument to have devotion, prayers for you, my Lord, and that you bless me to be thy instrument of love and light, so that I may serve your holy creation. Wherever I come, may I bring this divine light to enlighten the hearts of all. Oh Lord, bless me with such a divine... Light, I don’t ask for anything, neither for money nor for children or a wife, nor for profession or a job. Only one, that I love thee, that thy love is ever and ever for me. And that love is the ultimate, the supreme. Be there. I don’t know how many times, how much time. Hey, you are all tired, it’s nine o’clock. No, yeah, you are not, but many are sitting here. They have children and obligations at home. Perhaps next time I will tell you another beautiful story about love and surrendering, which means it is a little long story. You will say, "He’s sitting and talking and talking; we have to go home." So, anyhow, dear brothers and sisters. I’m very happy to see you this evening here, and happy that you have your yoga and life center, and you have beautiful, very good teachers. Who is here, Gītā or Citrapurī? You are looking after this? Gītā. Of course, Gītā is looking all the time. Women are all the time the best ones in the world. That always they take care; husband is only enjoying. That’s good. That’s good. Thanks to God that in the world, God has created women so that men can have a comfortable and easy life. Yes, so without woman, the world cannot be here. As a mother, the biggest, strongest, and greatest divine love and protection is a mother. Father too, but first is the mother. Mātṛ Devo Bhava, first God is mother. Pitṛ Devo Bhava, then the father. The entire universe, the endless universe, is a mother’s body, and within the universe, this consciousness is the embryo in the body of the mother, and that’s called Hiraṇyagarbha, the golden womb. And that Hiraṇya Garbha, the golden egg, which the Vedas declare, which you now read, and in Christmas, in the Bible, comes the Eastern, the Eastern egg. So the eastern egg is coming, taken from, but also in the Upanishads and Vedas it is said, Hiraṇya Garbha, the golden egg. And so this is coming from this golden egg story, the Eastern. Actually, the rabbit doesn’t give the egg, you know. But egg means that consciousness, the spirit of the Holy Spirit, you know, from where the creation took place. And that needs the mother, and between this space and consciousness, the balancing principle, that’s mother energy, that’s called Śakti, the divine. About that, next time we will talk, and the story I will tell you tomorrow in my evening lecture. So, thank you very much. God protect you, God bless you with good health, a long and happy life, and God bless this society, this community, this coastal life, and everyone. May we all live together with peace, love, and harmony, and think over what I said in the beginning about the ancestors. And follow the footsteps of the ancestors. Don’t feel separation after the birth, when your navel is separated from your mother’s body. You know that separation, there is some beautiful poem, I will not take time and tell you, but you know the first separation, how mother feels when the child is born and it is cut, the relations, it is for mother, it is not easy that time. When she is conscious and thinks about this oneness with the child, and the second separation is when the child is married. Yes, the mother would like, the father would like, that children marry and have this, but somehow for the mother, she knows, "Now my child is not anymore my child." But even when we are 200 years old, we will be that same small, naughty child of our mother. And that’s the beauty. Always, a mother is a mother and a father is a father. So respect your father and mother, follow your mother and father, and learn the knowledge. It should not be one-sided. The ancestors’ footsteps are very important. God is there. May the trust. So God bless you. Thank you. Hari Om. Om Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinaḥ Sarve Santu Nirmāyāḥ Sarve Bhadrāṇi Paśyantu Mā Kaścid Duhkhabhāg Bhavet Om Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ... And organizers, thank you that we can be with all our friends here. A lot of us organizers, we’d like to thank Swāmījī once again for delivering that lovely talk. On behalf of us, we’d like to make sure... Why don’t you come and speak? You see, there’s another evidence. Shall we talk between? There’s a joke. Man is the head to decide, but to say yes or no, woman is the neck. So, unless Nick doesn’t allow, men cannot say yes. We’d also like to offer Swāmījī a small token of our appreciation and also a nice book for Avatar. Thank you. What is this token in the... for my God? That I will have a hard life on the New Zealand border in like a pistol power beam, thank you. Happy town, many.
