Do not change your Gurudev

An evening satsang on the necessity of the Guru's grace for liberation.

"Ultimately, the door is opened by the Satguru Dev. It does not matter what you do... But finally, what arrives is solely the Guru's grace: Guru Kṛpāhi Kevalam."

"Therefore, it is said, 'Mokṣa Mūlam Guru Kṛpā.'... if you want to attain mokṣa... then surrender to only the one."

A spiritual teacher delivers a discourse emphasizing that all spiritual practices are secondary to the Guru's grace for achieving liberation. Using stories of Krishna, Paramahaṁsa Rāmakṛṣṇa, and the saint Mīrā Bāī, he illustrates the need for complete surrender to one's master, like a child to a parent, as the sole path to true knowledge and mokṣa.

Good evening to all dear ones, spiritual seekers, and practitioners of yoga. The Bhagavad Gītā states, "Yoga kāraṇam sukoshalam." When you perform good karma, or karma yoga, your yoga sādhanā becomes successful. However, to be successful in yoga sādhanā does not merely mean entering the brahmaloka. The key to Brahmaloka lies elsewhere. Therefore, it is said, "Mokṣa Mūlam Guru Kṛpā." Ultimately, the door is opened by the Satguru Dev. It does not matter what you do—all kinds of sādhanās, yantra, mantra, tantra, pūjā, anuṣṭhāna—everything. But finally, what arrives is solely the Guru's grace: Guru Kṛpāhi Kevalam. Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa also said that it does not matter from which path or direction you come; ultimately, He is there at the gate. And He will lead you to Guru Bhakti through the Gurudev. Who is greater than Bhagavān Rāma and Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa? They are the God of all three worlds. Yet, to attain Brahma, even Bhagavān Rāma and Kṛṣṇa and all other incarnations have bowed to Śiva as their Gurudev. Just the day before yesterday, I was at the Ṛṣi Sandīp. Who was Ṛṣi Sandīp? It is where Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa, when He was small like you, went to school. Where did He go? To school. This is not written, but it is known. What is it? It was not written; nobody writes it. They had sticks too. Naināī Kṛṣṇa had a stick. He had an ear. So if He pulls His ear, what about Gurujī? It is okay. As soon as He pulls His ear, the greatest knowledge enters. Very good. Did you understand? When your master pulls your ears, it means the hole opens, the vacuum opens, and it draws in knowledge. It is said that Bhagavān Paramahaṁsa Rāmakṛṣṇa was a great worshipper, a great bhakta, a great saint. He was devoted, performing pūjā to Divine Mother Kālī. Mother Kālī's tongue is always long and out. When you go to Calcutta, or Bengal, and when sādhus go there and are welcomed into homes, all the ladies—and I think gents too—but the ladies welcome the sādhus. How? How do they welcome people? In Bangladesh, you said? No. They stick out their tongues. I said, "What happened?" I was there. That is a divine mother’s blessing. So when you go to Bengal and they welcome you at home during Charaṇ Pūjā and Āratī, they stick out their tongues and say, "I don’t know how to do. Thank you." That was something. Do you understand me? Yes, but don’t tell me like that, okay? We are in Marudhar. We are in Marudhar Deśa, and Mīrā Bāī said to Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa, "Kesarīyā Valmā padhāro māre deśa." So who is Kesarīyā? He is Kesarīyā, the one wearing the kesarīyā bāna, Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa. He is called Kesarīyā, and Valmā means my dear one, my Gurudev. "Padhāro," welcome, please come. "Māre deśa," in my country. Mīrā Bāī says, "Kesarīyā balama, padharo mahāre deśa." But till now people say, "Oh ho, they don’t sing bhajan, they sing bhajan, they are saffare, they are saffare people." "Kesarīyā Valmā, padharo mahāre deśa." So people say, oh ho, it’s a song. But it is from Bhagavān. They are worshipping, and she is calling Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa as Pitāmbara Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa. That was the color of His dress, exactly like you have. Therefore, He said, "That’s it." You understand me? Did you understand? Now, the choṭī has a lot of power. I will tell you next time. It is the Bindu Cakra, the region of the Kuṇḍalinī. Śrīmān Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa,... Śrīmān, Śrīmān Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa,... Śrīmān Nārāyaṇa. So, Paramahaṁsa. Who is a Paramahaṁsa? It is known as a Paramahaṁsa Dīkṣā. The Paramahaṁsa is one who, after a ceremony, a Yajña, a Vājī Havan, receives Sannyāsa Dīkṣā and then has the right to the title of Paramahaṁsa. That is one with Paramatmā Brahman. That’s it. So, Rāmakṛṣṇa Bhagavān, Paramahaṁsa Rāmakṛṣṇa, was a great devotee of Mātā Kālī. In the temple, sometimes he used to cry. You have to become like a little baby. Before the Gurudev, in the presence of God, do not think you are a great man, a director, an engineer, a prime minister, a president, or a friend of Bhagavān. You are a bāla, a child. Gopāla. And when that Bāla Gopāla is hungry and wants to drink milk, and his mother does not come, what does he do? He cries, so his mother feeds him milk. If he does not cry, then his mother does not feed him milk. Yes. So even God will not fulfill you, feed you with that knowledge, those blessings, that energy, if you do not pray to God with your heart. There are many different kinds of fire: jaṭhāgni, davāgni, havanāgni, chittāgni, krodhāgni. Isn't it, Mahārājī? Vaisāhī virahāgni. Virah means love. Virah means longing. Virah means devotion, burning desires. That is called burning desires, but you can burn into coal and nothing will happen. You have to surrender to the Gurudev. Paramahaṁsa Rāmakṛṣṇa was the Gurudeva of the great saint, Swāmī Vivekānanda Mahārāj. Swāmī Vivekānanda is known because he went to many countries and was a good speaker. But before Vivekānanda, there were great saints in Western countries, yes, many, many. And now there are many Vivekānandas, greater than Vivekānanda, who are moving in the world. But Vivekānanda was accepted as an international and national dignitary, a saint, as Swami Vivekānanda, a great speaker of great things. There is nothing more to say. We worship him. So, Paramahaṁsa Rāmakṛṣṇa, while doing pūjā for hours and hours in the Kālī temple in Calcutta—Calcutta wālī Kālī, Kālī Calcutta—he was crying, "Mother, mother, mother." From that, it is said—I am telling you, I was not there; I am only telling what we hear—Bhagavān is the one who has become self-realized. He is Bhagavān; he is Brahmāśramaṇ. Adore, adore, adore. Obey, obey, obey thy master. Then you will be successful. Otherwise, your knowledge, tons of theory, is nothing compared to the grace of practice. Chahe kitane hi granth paḍho, chahe kitane hi śāstra paḍho. Paramahaṁsa Bhagavān Rāmakṛṣṇa was praying to Mātā Kālī. He was in tears, calling, "Mother, Mother, Mother." And then Kālī came. Mātā came. She came alive from the stage and took him like a little baby into her lap. That’s it. The imprint of God: we are little babies. If Gurujī were to come out now and take you in his lap, you would say, "No, no, Gurujī, I am comfortable here." Do not say that. That is it. There should be no doubt, no differences, and no distances. It is said, if the stone presses... rare, very, very rare. But there is one stone called the Paras. We do not know how it looks. Maybe there are many Paras stones. Yogīs are throwing them outside every day after working, you know? Yes, who knows? To know that is something. O paras asalī nahī. So, jabtak, when till you do not become one with Gurudev—tan, man, bachan, dhana—all your knowledge must merge into oneness. Jab main thā vo nahī, aur vo to main yā nahī. Why? Prem galī ati sakaṛī, jisme do na samāye. When I was here, he was not here. And now he is here, I am not here. Why? Because the street of love is so narrow, two cannot go together; two have to become one. Therefore, only one is the Brahman, not two. So finally, Gurudev... Kālī Mātā said to Bhagavān Paramahaṁsa Rāmakṛṣṇa, "Beta, my son, what do you want?" Finally, he said, "Mokṣa, Mokṣa." Mātā kyā kī? No, no. "He beta, tere mokṣa main nahī deśaktī hūṁ. Sab kush deśaktī hūṁ. Mokṣa nahīṁ." "Hey, my child, I cannot bless you with liberation. No, I can give you everything. But only go to your master, Totāpurījī." His master Gurudev's name was Totāpurī. "Go to Totāpurī. He will give you liberation, the blessings." Then he received the knowledge and liberation from Totāpurījī Mahārāj. His disciple Swami Vivekānanda afterward gave the name Sarasvatī. But Vivekānanda is also Purī, Daśnāmke Purī. So, it does not matter how much you think you know, how far you can go. The sky is endless. Go ahead. Take off. Take off yourself. If you want to see my flight, then lift up the sky a little. If you want to see my flight, then lift up the sky. That’s it. You can go as far as you are. But in nothingness, nothingness, we do not want to be lost in nothingness. All our karmas, everything goes behind. Never and never will you be free. Therefore, guru kā drohī sabse pūrā, uskā kām hove nī pūrā. Jo guru kā drohī hotā hai, uskā kām kabhī bhī pūrā nī ho saktā hai, kabhī bhī mokṣa nī ho saktā hai. Ek bār āpne guru kyā chāhe, guru gūṅgā, guru bhaulā, guru kaisā bhī ho, uske andar me tumko guṇa dekhne hain. So mokṣa is only there. And you have only one Master, one guru; you cannot change always. You have only one mother who gives you birth. You have only one father who gave you birth. You can call every lady a mother. You can call every man a father. But in reality, who is your mother? Who is your father? Only one. Therefore, if you want to attain mokṣa, if you want liberation, if you want to attain ātmajñāna, if you want to achieve that which you seek, then surrender to only the one. Gurudevī dhyāna mūlaṁ guru. Mūrti pūjā mūlaṁ guru pādaṁ, mantra mūlaṁ guru vākyaṁ, mokṣa mūlaṁ guru kṛpā. After that, you go ahead with your yoga sādhanā. That will help you. It will uplift your consciousness. It will bring you somewhere, but all they are is the highway. That will lead you to your destination. Others are little footpaths. They will lead you far, even far into the jungle. At the end, this path will slowly, slowly disappear. And you go a little farther. Who is sitting there? Your uncle. Kaunsā uncle? Lion. Lion baṭa hai. Ya, Śer baṭa hai. Kaunsa? Sudhār Singh. Śer. Achchā, ājāo betā. Śer ko dekhā kabhī? Television mein? That is why our tradition, the tradition of Ālakapurī, which is from the Himalayas, and its name is that holy river Alaknandā. Nandā is a Devī, like Kālī Devī in Bengal or Ambā Devī in Gujarat. There are many different Devīs. In the kingdom of Ālagpurījī, after Badrī Viśāl, Badrī Nārāyaṇa, you go far, about eight to nine kilometers. That is called the kingdom of Ālagpurījī. And in the kingdom of Alagapurījī is Kubera. So, Bhagavān kā, kyā kyā de, kyā kyā de, treasure go, kośa adhyakṣa. Bhagavān kā koṣādyakṣa jo vah hai, kahan? Kubera. Kubera is living in the kingdom of Alagpurījī. And there, Alaknandā nikalta hai, vah Alagpurījī ke nām se, aur kyōṅ ki wahāṅ, there in the kingdom of Alagpurījī, there was a divine mother called Nandā. So Nandā Devī kī pūjā hotī hai, jaise in Rajasthan we have the veneration of Gaṅgohar, Pārvatī. Now, people will go for the veneration, and there will be a fair. That Devī, Nandā Devī and Alakapurījī, she got the name Alaknandā Nadī, who went and came here, Bhāgīrathī and Alaknandā, and together, in Devaprayāg, it becomes the River Gaṅgā. Also, Ṛṣi Bhagīrathi’s disciple, her name was Gaṅgā. And that is why Bhagīrathī Ṛṣi gave his blessing and said, "This river should bear the name of my disciple Gaṅgā." So guru hi eko brahmādityan asti. Otherwise, if you misuse the guru’s words, you will become Nugra. You will leave your master, and then definitely punishment will be there by your karmas. You left this human body, and now you do not know how and where you will come. Therefore, Gurudev. So if you want to achieve that ultimate achievement for human life, for which you are born, tons of theory and your intellect will not help you at all. That’s all. Intellect is like a drum. But when the drum is made whole, it does not become a drum. It becomes a bomb. Ho jātā hai. So that intellect, what you are putting out, thinking you know everything, that is just a drum. But you have to go, vo drum kā hī to brahma hai. Vo brahma kī andar hī, vo brahma nahīṁ hai. Vo drum hī hai. So, my dear ones, we will have the webcast again tomorrow, and then we will try to have a webcast from Khattu Ashram.
