Self-inquiry meditation

Self-enquiry meditation involves two steps. First, ask "How am I?" to examine your qualities and character. Second, ask "Who am I?" to understand you are not the body, breath, mind, or intellect. Do not hide from this inquiry, for you and the divine know your inner state. Open your heart and view to these realities within. Sit comfortably, withdraw from the external world, and be aware of your being. Consciousness can expand instantly beyond imagination. Unfulfilled desires and unfinished life chapters lie dormant within. These unresolved matters can be dissolved through wisdom, which is the next step beyond initial inquiry.

"How am I?"

"Who am I?"

We are going to have a meditation. This meditation is called self-enquiry. Self-enquiry has two steps. First: "How am I?" So, self-enquiry means asking, "How am I?" If I tell about this: Am I a positive person? Am I good to other people? Am I an angry person? Am I selfish? Or am I humble, kind, helpful, forgiving, tolerant, respectful, understanding, mutually understanding, etc.? So, the first step for meditation is to ask, "How am I?" And then, second: "Who am I?" I am not this body, I am not this breath, I am not this mind, I am not this intellect, etc., etc. So these are the two steps of meditation, and we will see how far we come. Do not hide thyself. In this hall, there are two who know everything: what you think, what you are feeling, etc. One is yourself: what you are thinking, how you are feeling, what your opinion is, etc., etc. You know that. The second one who knows everything, maybe more than you, is God. So, open your heart, open your view, open your realities within thyself, and then, next, ask: who am I? We will work on this. Good? So, make yourself comfortable. Adjust yourself in such a way that you will not feel discomfort. This is self-enquiry, the meditation of yoga and life. Sit straight upright. Place your hands on your knees or on your thighs. If you have a mantra, you may repeat your mantra with your mālā. If you don’t have a mantra, just observe and follow my words. Whatever you would like to see in this hall, do it now. Then we will close our eyes. You need not open your eyes more. Until we finish meditation, it is not necessary to open the eyes, because nothing will be new. Make yourself comfortable. No tension in the body. Relax your elbows and gently close your eyes. Withdraw thyself from the external world and be aware of your being here, in this hall. We will chant Oṃ three times. During the Oṃ chanting, withdraw thyself from the external world and come to thy inner world. Be relaxed. Take a few deep inhales and exhales. All together, we will chant Oṁ. Deep inhale. Oṁ. Inhale. Settle thyself. Keep your eyes closed still, and fold your hands like a prayer position, a prayer mudrā. Repeat after me. First I will say one mantra, and then you will repeat. Na’ham Karatā Prabhu Dīp Karatā Mahāprabhujī Dīp Karatā He Kevalam Śānti Śānti... It’s not a miracle, okay? I don’t like miracles, I like reality. So now, I will let your consciousness expand, you know, and you will be there within no time. Think of Tokyo. You know where Tokyo is? You are there already, no? So, how quickly the consciousness expands, okay? From Tokyo, let’s go to the moon. We know what the moon is, where the moon is. Our consciousness is already there, and so it is that our consciousness expands beyond our imagination, beyond our capacity. So, "yoga for body and beyond" was the subject. So, yoga for body and beyond. So, how is that? The main thing is that we solve our inner problem. There are many, many things; unanswered questions are within us. Many, many chapters we have in our mind, intellect, and consciousness. Many, many chapters which we did not finish, and maybe we will not finish. We began one chapter, and it’s been broken between and stopped. What is the reason? There are many, many different reasons. You want to study medicine? You were learning for two and a half years, and then you said, "No, I don’t like this." So you stopped your chapter. Then you start something different. You find one friend, he or she. You are happy, you like it, everything, but suddenly the chapter is stopped. So, unfulfilled desires and unfulfilled feelings are dormant in our subconsciousness. So, tomorrow we will live with subconsciousness, okay? Also, meditation is the next step in self-inquiry. Today we only had a little inquiry, but it’s still, we went very deep. The next point is coming: "How am I?" Not, "Who am I?" We have to solve our problems. We have to solve the chapters, delete them, but how? You delete something, but on the hard disk, everything is there. Similarly, it’s not easy to forget, but it can be dissolved through wisdom.
