Follow the good path

A spiritual talk on the foundations of health, happiness, and life's dual paths.

"Health is not everything, but everything is nothing without health."

"Sat means the truth, Sangha means the company... That will lead you to the best life."

The lecturer addresses an audience, welcoming them and discussing authentic yoga. He outlines the three pillars of good health—digestion, sleep, and memory/balance—and emphasizes the critical importance of one's company (Sangha). He explains how a single association leads to two divergent paths: Satsang (truthful company leading to upliftment) and Kusang (bad company leading to degradation). The talk expands to include keys to a happy life from traditional wisdom, such as a healthy body, wealth, a harmonious partner, good children, and friendly neighbors, concluding with reflections on human desires, rebirth, and spiritual evolution.

First, we will chant Aum and a mantra. Sattva, reality, Samasotra, leaders from the military, leaders, dear sisters and brothers, I welcome you. It is nice to see you. I am happy to come again to this place. People practice Yoga in many different parts of the world. However, the Yoga practiced in America is different. There are very few yoga schools that teach authentic, real yoga, as we understand it. This morning and evening, you had nice practices. Prepoja and your brother Omish are teaching you some exercises. I think we see each other for the first time. Yes? You see me for the first time? The first time is the good time. It should leave the best impression. From my side, it is the best. It is a good impression to see you. Yoga is like a big Atlantic Ocean, an immense source of energy. I have been teaching yoga for nearly 55 or 60 years. Imagine how many lectures I have given on yoga. Generally, at retreats now—I am mostly—there are many, many people practicing. In Europe and elsewhere, people are practicing more. Practicing the teachings we have from teachers is good for health. Repeat this sentence: some wise person said, "Health is not everything, but everything is nothing without health." So it doesn't matter what we think, what profession we have, what type of position we have, how rich we are, or how many happy and good friends we have. We may be most wealthy. But if health is not good, then everything is just not good. Who is enjoying life? Every day, a lot. Good food is there, but the person can't eat this and that. So health depends, or we can say, on three things. First, that one can eat, no matter how much, but doesn't gain kilos. It means that one can digest. Second, that one can sleep without any sleeping tablets or anything. You can sleep soundly for at least six or seven hours. You can enjoy your sleep. In the morning, when you wake up in your bed, your memory is always brilliant in that way. Know everything by these three points: that is good health, and then which is not so. But we stand on one leg, and on the second leg you can put your shoes on. We don't need a chair or bench. We are not unbalanced. That means we are a healthy person. So, I tell this to people for the first time, to many who came with me. The first is that you eat. Eat good, healthy food, organic food, avoid the junk food. But you can eat. Let's say you eat a big pizza. Then after that, you eat a lot before you eat the soup, and then after that, all then you have a very nice big fruit and cheese plate. After that, you have a nice big bowl of ice cream, and then you are still... Talking, and then you have very nice coffee, and still you are okay. You don't gain, you know? Yeah. This stomach sometimes grows for a man, mostly, no? But if someone says, "A man without a stomach, a sky without stars." So let the boys be happy. But eating gives us that certainty that we are healthy. We can digest, digest, and then you can sleep, sound sleep, a healthy one can be. And third, you have good memory, not healthy. If you know the numbers of your friends by heart. So that is the balance that you can put your shoes on, standing on one leg without help. Health is the first wealth in our life. Health is the first wealth. A healthy person is the richest person. Buy and get. So this is the one point. And the second point is that we are different than we understand. Also, understand we are not to judge them. But we are human, and we know what God is. We know what happiness is. We know what a friend is. We know kindness, compassion, good life, good friends, good relations. This is part of our life, of our humanity. So the human gets, here is splitting. Year is splitting, and this is one word. It's called Uthān and Patan in the world. Uthān, Patan. Uthān means development, achievement, success. Patan means the destruction. Everything is going down. Yaukam says this, that, or relation except that. It's day by day decreasing, and we don't know what to do. So, these are the two things: utthāna and patana. Development or achievement, and another, the distraction or decrease in everything, background. Slowly, slowly, company, you quit the people, your employees, one after another, one after another. Now, these two words are called uthān and patan. Now, uthān and patan both begin from one point, from one place. Like one seed, when we put it in the earth, it comes with two leaves. Two leaves come. So similarly, then the two leaves are either going upwards or downwards. So what are these two leaves? These are Uthana and Patna. Their roots, where are their roots? Which seed is there? What is the cause of that? That we call in our Hindi language or Sanskrit language, Saṅgha. Sangha means company, friend, society with whom you spend your time. That's called Saṅgha. That's Saṅgha. So Sangha is only one word. What Sangha means: your children, if they have good friends, then your child is very good, will study very well and everything, and have a very good life. Or, if it goes to some other one, what they call the addicts, no studying, hanging here and there, joining the gangs. So we all wish that our children will have a happy, healthy, and comfortable life. Then parents feel their life is successful. And when this is not like this, parents are married. You work very hard. You earn a lot of money. Your company, house, work, property, this, that, everything. And you have one son. After that, he or she will inherit everything to your child. But you will be very sad. You worked very hard, and what happened with my old wealth and this and that? So this is a human life's sorrow. But we have this because we would like to achieve something, this, this, that, that. There is no end. There is no end to the Bhagavad Gītā. So, the Saṅgha. This is the Saṅgha. Now you are with me. I'm telling you something good: ideas, instructions, or telling you how to maintain our life happy, healthy, and like this. You are happy. I don't mean that you are not healthy or not happy. But this is only one seed. That's called Saṅgha. And from this Saṅgha, like one seed will sprout and have two leaves. And from this Saṅgha, there will come two ways. One way going this direction, and one way going this direction. One goes there, and one goes there. What is that? So there are two words. One word is called Sattva. Sattva. Sattva means the truth. Sattva means the good. Sat means the health. Sat means the perfection. Sat means the successful. Sat means the God. Sat means the good friend. Sat means everyone loves you and adores you or is happy about you. Sat, truth. So now the Sat and the other one word, which we call Sangha. So Satsaṅg. These are two words. Sat means the truth, Sangha means the company. In our language we say Dosti. Dosti means friends. Dosti means, "Do" means two. What does that mean? That one is only going on the path of truth, and taking the other one also to the path of truth. That's called dosti, best friend. That will lead you to the best life. Or, there is one word which is called kū. After other words, it is a good word. It becomes kao, but it's called ku. Ku means bad. Ku means wrong. Ku means distraction. So, ku means not good. You begin, maybe become alcoholic, some drug taking, addicted, or other bad habits: fighting, stealing, etc., etc., ku. And śalya again means company, with. So, these are two letters, ku and sat. This is śalya. And śalya means that only one point: there you are, or mine. A small child is born, parents are 99.9, they are loving the child and educating them in everything and everything. After, destiny, how it will lead you. So, satsaṅg and kṛṣṇa. Now, first I said health. Good health means everything, these three points. It was memory, good digestion, balance, concentration. Now, how is your concentration? But I don't want to make you feel that Swāmījī is now trying to test us. I don't want to test it. Concentrate on yourself. Know how much concentration you have. So, human life, first is that, and this both begins. This is physical, and the other is natural or energy. So, physical part or nourishment, exercise, yoga exercise. It must not be that you have to stand on both hands, you know, or stand on your head. God said, "I give you two legs to stand, not a head." But headstanding, if we have good balance and our leg muscles and shoulder muscles, then more blood circulation is towards the brain, and that keeps our memory very good, very good. No medicine can give you that kind of good health to develop the memory. Oxygen, blood circulation towards the brain, and that's why hand standing, or the hand standing, or any posture bending forward. So this is the physical part, and the physical part is: if our body is here, we are here; if the body is not here, we are not here. The other one is happy, no problem, no disturbance—this is very, very happy. You are happy with your wife or with your husband, happy with your children, and you are happy with the neighbors. So in the Fire Veda, the ancient and first medicine from Satyuga began. That's called Amṛt Kalaś from Dhanvantari. And in this, there are some points about what makes our life comfortable and happy. And that is in their few points. First, pehlā sukha nīrogī kāyā. First, happiness is a healthy body. Dūsrā sukha ghar meṁ māyā, that you have with you some wealth. It means that you can feed your family, everything, and a friend comes, a guest comes, you can feed them too. So, pehlā sukha nīrogī kāyā, dūsrā sukha ghar mein māyā. Māyā means the wealth. Tīsrā sukha iṣṭrī ājñākārī. So, it means you and your partner have a mutual understanding. So, the wife wishes that her husband has mutual understanding and is kind, and so on, and the husband also says that his wife should be very mutually understanding, loyal, etc., etc. So, one hand cannot make a sound. And you can make a sound also without two hands, but you need a cheek. So, Tīsrā sukha iṣṭrī ājñākārī means your partner. Istrī is a woman, but it means both sides. Man, in the couple, husband and wife, is like one bird, and that bird has two wings to fly. Their souls both become one. That's called a marriage. What does marriage mean? A river merges into the ocean, or the ocean merges into the river. So their ātmā, their soul, becomes one. And both have two wings to fly, and both wings should be healthy: physical, mental, emotional, social, intellectual, etc., etc. And so, a partner is very important. Sometimes, when the husband has a very high position, when he gets up and comes out of his office, everyone salutes and everyone says, "Good morning, sir," and "Good morning," and this and that. Everything, his car is brought, and we sit in the car and bring it home, and so on. So he definitely... When such a formality you have, ego is growing, or it can be a woman. Now at home, when he enters his house and his wife is standing in the kitchen and says, "Oh darling, how are you?" Please carry this garbage. God bless her. The person from there to fall down here, that is a suffering ego. The wife will tell him after, not immediately. And when he comes in, he says, "Can you put the shoes on one side, please?" So then it is said, when husband and wife are not, but she thinks that she is the boss, that husband dies earlier. So this is a balance between husband and wife. There should be no feeling of their position outside. Their position should be equal. You should respect your wife, and your wife should respect you, her husband. The wife should adore the husband, and the husband should adore her. That's both sides called devotion, both sides. That couple, that partner, right or wrong, will be happy and have no disappointment. What's happening, we don't know. And then the fourth point, santāna means your children. They should also be loyal, and they should follow the parents' instructions and things. It's easy to get a child. Difficult to grow them. It's hard to educate them. But after, you don't know what's going to happen. Fifth, a good neighbor. If the neighbor has three or four dogs, or the whole night they are struggling, or they are playing music, or this and that, and if you tell them something, they are angry with you, oh God! There is only one thing, and that is that you sell the house and go. You like the problem, no? So the neighbors can make you happy and support you very nicely, or it can make life. And therefore, the neighbor is like our own family. Just like two rooms or a house to live in, otherwise they are like together. And the sixth point. The sixth point is that you have your own milky animal, a buffalo, a goat, or a sheep. So that you have your own. Now, you don't, we don't know what we are drinking. It's milk, but how much is it manipulated? Have your own cow, or a goat, or a sheep, and you take that, direct that milk of the mother. That's a mother. Who gives you something to drink or eat is a mother. Mother's milk only can a mother give. There are different kinds of milk. There are four different kinds of milk, and I will ask you a question maybe tomorrow. I give you the time. Whole night, think it over. First, our milk is mother's milk. Mother means creatures who give the milk. No scientist can develop or produce the milk like a mother does. No scientist till today can make one drop. Till now, they cannot produce or make one drop of the honey that the bee can do. Look at our nature, my dear. This is our nature, and we are threatening our nature. So first, milk is called mother's milk, and mother means all mothers, all mothers. Second, first milk is your own mother's milk, pehlā milk, māikā, dūjā dūdh gaikā, so first milk is your own mother's, first one you drink, and second is all mother's other creatures who give them. The third milk is from vegetation, so vegetation, I think here, some, so you will tell me in an emergency which one is the fourth we can utilize. Ek doodh gāyekā, amāyekā, dujā doodh gāyekā, tījā doodh bandrayekā, aur choṭā doodh gāyekā. That is a question for tomorrow. Take your time to research it. So, this part of our life which makes us conditioned, then you, your way, are in harmony, happy, and you will not be a victim of many diseases. So it depends on you, my dear. Now, it is, there are 8.48 million. Different kinds of creatures, and of course, if you don't agree with me, then begin to count and tell me that. So this is called the cycle of birth and death, birth and death. This soul, which is traveling, recycling. Now we call—do you understand about recycling? Do you believe in recycling? Very much. Everything we can recycle, so it becomes organic and good, and so on. The second recycling is we rebirth. So if you believe in recycling, the second is that the soul is born, coming and going, coming and going. So if you believe in recycling material, where is the problem in accepting the recycling of birth and death? So if you believe or you don't believe, the reality remains reality; it doesn't change. If you don't believe in reincarnation, it's okay. It's your opinion. Feel comfortable. But when you will again come into the astral world, with the recycling process going through your karmas, then you will know, yes, Swāmījī taught us. Swamiji, can you help me? That's telephone, telephone. That's telephone, telephone. That means no one can listen, and no one can help. That is only your destiny, your good deeds or bad deeds. Saṅgha, Kuśaṅga, or Satya Saṅgha. So, different creatures are in three categories. Jalchal, Chalchal, and Nabchal: the creatures in the water, on the earth, and in the sky. These are three different causes: 8.4 million. One is the human. There is no racism. There is no counting of color. Black, white, yellow, no. All humans, God has given a most powerful thing to the humans. That's called intellect. Intellect, education. They will become like that. You educate someone to become a pilot, and take the example that there are five or six hundred people sitting inside. We have learned everything; we are very clever. We are everything. What do you think? We are very intelligent, but now we said, "Please come and take off." You dare to take off? This big aeroplane, but there is a person who is our friend, our youngest brother, or this, he will take off like a one. If the bird makes more moves, it will take off. Knowledge, and that knowledge is education. Everything begins with education. And so, yoga is the education of the body, education of the mind. And in the mind then come the emotions, the desires. Then, well, then again, which I said before, like a saṅgha and a saṅgha. So, there is no end. One branch comes, the second branch comes, several, and three become big and bigger. So then, in front of humans, again stand two different paths; one is called this path. This we should have limitation: desires, passion have a limitation. If you eat too much, you will have a stomach ache. So there are many desires, but we should not overthink and control them. Kāma, Krodha, anger, the thief which will steal everything from you, is already at the door. Already, Krodha Agni is a Krodha. That fire will burn you. Lobha. Lobha means greed, and greed and all. And so it is said, the mother has enough for us, but not for the greed. And now the humans are so greedy, digging and digging and digging for dynamite, digging and digging for precious stones, digging and digging and digging for tomatoes. And not only digging the earth—further, they are to get the oil. Still, they are not; they want to dig more, and this is greed. That is why we are unhappy. Kāma, Krodha, Lobha, Moha. Attachment. Attachment is that through which we are unhappy, and we have depressions and this and that. These are the weak points of humans that let them go down, which are uplifting. And that's called vairāgya, detachment and compassion. These are the five best qualities a human can have; they can just levitate. Levitate, levitate, until you come, the door of heaven opens so wide, so you don't see the door anywhere. Just, you are one with the Supreme, the Highest. Life becomes the divine, the happy, the healthy. And off we go again to that cosmic light. We become one with that universe, neither coming nor going, no motive, all this stuff. So, the knowledge, buddhi, intellect—this intellect can bring us to the highest consciousness, or it can lead us to the lower level of consciousness. So, yoga has so many principles for humans. Observe and follow these scriptures, what you are doing, breathing techniques, what you are doing, and how and what happens in our body. Tomorrow, I mean. Today is too much. Then you will not understand. There is not even an Indian family. There was a Saṅgha, Mohan, Loka, Puttana, Pattana, whatever he said, everything is forgotten. So, try to digest this, and next, thank you.
