Yoga leads to the healthy way of life

A spiritual gathering and discourse celebrating a new mayor and exploring yoga's role in society.

"Yoga is not a part of any religion. If, then, all religion is a part of yoga, because yoga is good health, happiness, harmony, peace, non-violence, understanding, kindness, and love."

"Rāja Yoga means discipline... So, what is a Rājayoga? So long ago, there were people... So, how the rāja-nīti, how the politics was born? The politics came in life."

Swami Viśvagunānanda (Viśva Gurujī) leads a ceremony at Śrī Devapurījī Ashram following the election of Gurū Nāthanjī as Mayor of the Kāpiti Coast. After introductory remarks and a speech from the new mayor, Swamijī delivers a discourse. He connects the concept of Rāja Yoga (the yoga of discipline and kingship) to ethical governance, explains the universal principles of yoga beyond physical postures, and blesses the mayor's mission to build community. The talk includes commentary on the International Day of Yoga and concludes with Vedic prayers for peace.

All dear brothers, sisters, and dear ones, blessings are coming from a beautiful island, New Zealand, from Śrī Devapurījī Ashram. Today is a beautiful day. This city where we are is located near the ocean, on the beach—a very peaceful, beautiful, and good environment. There is no pollution. It is perfect for practicing yoga and meditation, and to live here is also divine. We have our ashram in this country, and today is a more special day, as we are going to introduce you to a great person. First, we will come to our dear guru brother, Naginwāl Pāṭel, and I will give him the introduction about the environment, the forest, the protection of nature, water, etc. I have heard that now in New Zealand, the problem with the ozone is getting much better, so it means it has improved. Yoga in New Zealand is very much practiced. Yoga and life are in a few cities, and numerous people have been practicing for the last 25 years. Thousands and thousands of Kiwis, the New Zealand people, have been practicing. So, I think further, our dear brother, the bhakta, the disciple, Naginwāl Pāṭel, the floor is yours, please. Naginwāl Pāṭel: Yes. Praṇām Swamījī. Praṇām Divya Purījī. It is my pleasure to introduce you, Swāmījī, to Yoga and Daily Life. Twenty years ago, I went to listen to Swāmījī at St. George on Willis Street. I was only impressed with Swami Vivekananda while I was studying at college and university in India. I believed in Brahmins, but I believed more in Swamis. And when I saw this Bhagavad-Gītā, this trace, I was attracted to go and listen to him. Since then, he has attracted me so much, and he has given me and empowered me with so much knowledge—how to live spiritually, politically, socially, and economically. He carries the message from Ādi Śaṅkarācārya Jī. He has been awarded Viśva Gurujī. Before that was Paramahaṁsa, before that was Swāmī. We are fortunate and lucky to have this tenure of personality at our Ranggata beach today and tonight, especially when Swamiji has more than, I don't know how many centres, but 1,700 or centres. Swamiji has a very good man-made lake, which is in Rajasthan, Pali, and the schools, as well as the hospital, and the biggest man-made ashram, called Om. You can see it on Google Maps, you can see it from the plane. And on top of that, Swāmījī has a gaushālā, which is a love towards the animals, particularly deserted cows and animals. They are protected in Rajasthan, in the Palani district. Viśvaguna Swamiji has five ashrams in Rajasthan, and of course in Delhi, as well as other parts of the world, including Wellington and Auckland. We are privileged to have Viśva Gurujī here tonight, particularly on the occasion where Swamijī blessed us; we had local body elections, and Swamijī blessed Gurunāthan. We were trying last week, and then we managed it, and Swāmījī got somebody in India to do prayers, to pray for Gurunāthan's success. As I said, spirituality is very important, same as political, economic. If they work together, it can make it easier to do your job that you want to do. And that has showered on Anaitanījī. He is a well-known, beloved guru in this area. I was walking on, I was coming here on Friday, and Gurujī would be waiting for me to come here. I was wearing this blanket, as if you can help me, and he's been working hard on election year. And I saw it, I said, "He will be the mayor." Then I said, "He's breaching the first rule to take the boardings away." So I tried to text him, but my phone froze. And then I said, "Well, it doesn't matter." I made it stand up two days before, coming from Wellington at the Romati Road. And then on Friday I said, I'll leave it. When I go back home, I'll pick it up. But today I thought, I'll pick it up since you are coming. So Gurujī has a big task. It's a city or coast which has to compete with Wellington, particularly the airport, and develop the economy. But he wants to build the communities, Viśvagurujī does. He has built a world family, Viśvakuṭuṁb. The Vedas have said that one family, one world. We all are the same, we are all one, one and all. That's a message that Kapiti has given you today. In my view, that doesn't matter where you come from, who you are. It's what you do and how you do it, and I think you have proven to voters there that you can do the job as a good mayor. We would like to invite Gurū Nāthanjī, the mayor of Kapiti, to say a few words. Before that, we would like Madhuran to garland, make nice photo, please. So. Will you come closer? Closer there, nicely. Yes, photos would come best. The floor is yours. Gurū Nāthanjī: The floor is mine. Yeah, the floor is ours. Let me start with the name coincidence, if you believe in coincidences, or coincidences are parallel universes. This billboard, before I came here, I went looking for it, but there's an interesting tale. Two weeks ago, I had a call from a well-known Kāpī Coast historian, and there was a message on my phone. Anthony Drever, who's a Rāmadī South resident, said, "Guru, I've got some embarrassing news for you." That's what the message said, and I thought I was alarmed. Please ring me. So I rang him, and he said something happened. My neighbor came and complained that in the nighttime, when she was driving along Rameti Road, she came across a whole lot of traffic cones across the road, and in the middle of it was one of your billboards. And apparently she stopped and wanted to remove it, and she was pelted with lemons from the bushes. So it was some young people playing a prank. This was taken from one of the places where I put it up. And I had to tell them, this is not part of my campaign. Today, when I was at the Rangoli restaurant, my son was there and he said, "Hey, did you know I saw one of the billboards flying on the road? I think you should go and pick it up." So that's why I went looking for it, and it was you who picked it up. A coincidence, but it's interesting that it says, "Build a wall." And a lot of people say, "What do you mean, 'build a wall'? That's Donald Trump's one." I say, Donald Trump doesn't own the world. There are many walls. This particular wall is supposed to keep the sea away and keep the people safe along the coast. So I actually stole something from him and made it good. So that's a good story. So, ladies and gentlemen, I'm very glad because this is my first function after being the mayor. See this as an auspicious time. Naginwāl Pāṭel: Historical event. Gurū Nāthanjī: Historical event. Because we are not building walls. In this case, we are breaking them down. And the decision by the people to make me their mayor, because my slogan says, "Make Guru our mayor." I didn't demand it. I put it to a choice for the people to make, and they have responded, I think, very well. And therefore, I stand before you as the mayor that you have made me. So I thank you very much, and I hope that I can live up to the expectations that the public has. That is, not only to build cities and infrastructure and stuff like that, but to build a community. I'm passionate about that. Thank you very much. Thank you. Naginwāl Pāṭel: Anyone, public, who would like to say something? Yes? Yes, come here. Please. His interaction. Our student is a local resident, and he's probably standing for a nursing partner in this category, or maybe for testing. We would like for him to be a nurse. He has some issues with his health. Thank you. Audience Member: As a chief, to your studio becomes an inspiration, because then we are contesting the next election. That environment surrounding that, whether a person who has made his name their own, can become an environment. You are the first male person becoming the mayor from an ethnic origin, or better defined as a non-Pakistani. There were two other ladies before you. Guru, just follow. So you have got the men into the race where women are more in this country. So, thank you, and we wish you all the best. And as you come from a background which is migration, you know, a lot of the changing demography of New Zealand attracts towards you, and they look upon you and what you have achieved. It may be a very small step, but mankind, when they went to space, it was one step for mankind. Mankind, one step for a man and a big step for mankind. And on the global and national level, you have set me apart, and I'm very fortunate to know you in that regard. And good luck. The job starts for the next election the next day when you become a mayor. And hopefully, your performance will not be about what you want to do; it will be more about what you have done in the next three years. And good luck with that. Thank you. Naginwāl Pāṭel: Thank you. Oṃ Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah, Sarve Santu Nirmayah, Sarve Bhadrani Paśyantu, Mā Kaścid Duhkha Bhāg Bhavet, Oṃ Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ. Swāmījī: Blessed self, dear sisters, brothers, under the cosmic light, bless you all in the name of Oṃ Śrī Alak Purījī Siddhapīṭha Paramparā. Yoga has become worldwide a subject for the best health for humans: physical, mental, social, and spiritual health. When humans have healthy thoughts, when humans have healthy actions, when humans have healthy nourishment, and when humans have a healthy society, then our beautiful Mother Earth, the planet, the living planet, will again recover from this illness which has been created by the mental desires and illness of humans. Yoga. Nowadays, where there are humans, there is yoga, and where there is yoga, there is human. Especially in the last two years, the Honorable Prime Minister of the Republic of India, Narendra Modi, worked very hard. He himself is a yogī. He is a practitioner of yoga, and he is practicing every morning for nearly one and a half hours. And now are the nine days of the Divine Mother, and it is he who is also fasting for nine days, only drinking water, nothing else, no milk, no fruits, nothing else. Two years ago, it was Navarātri day, and in New York, there was a program and Modījī was there. It was declared, it was his saṅkalpa to Divine Mother, to announce the International Day of Yoga, announced by the United Nations. And look at the power of the saṅkalpa, the spirituality, that within a few days, about 176 countries voted for that, that yes, we are for yoga. Few did not, but after 14 days or one month, they also did. The European Union, they did not. So Modijī asked the vice-chancellor of Germany. He said, "Madam, what have you against yoga?" She said, "No, no, it will be." We say okay, and within no time, the letter appeared there, written by the European Union. So yoga is not connected to some dogma. All religion is a dogma. Religion is called sanātana dharma. And what is that? That means the balancing, the balance of physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, political, etc., balance in the world, balance in the universe, balance on all the stars and planets, that is a sanātana dharma. Man-made religion is after that, when some incarnation came, they spoke something and it became a religion. Rāma came, and the Rāmāyaṇa, and so, that is a man-made religion. Kṛṣṇa, man-made religion; Jesus, man-made religion; Muhammad, man-made religion. But Sanātana is the oneness in everyone, which unites in oneness. Yoga is not a part of any religion. If, then, all religion is a part of yoga, because yoga is good health, happiness, harmony, peace, non-violence, understanding, kindness, and love. Who is against this? Are you against good health? Are you against harmony, peace, a good family, good things? That is yoga. Yoga is not these postures that you are doing. Yes, that's okay, good. There are postures. But also, if we think like that, it is said, some philosophers said, "Health is not everything, but everything is nothing without health." And therefore, yoga leads to a healthy way of life. And also, it is said, yoga is not only talking, it is a practical, you have to do. If you eat, your hunger will be satisfied. If you don't eat, you will be hungry. Therefore, it is said the terms of theory are nothing compared with the grammar of practice. And so, I am a Viśwa Guru, and we have here one guru more. So this one guru should become a Viśwa Guru also. So we congratulate him. He wins. Yesterday, with great majority, with the mayor of the city, Kapiti Coast, so we congratulate you, sir, and bless you, politic. Now, yoga, according to the Bhagavad Gītā, has 18 yoga paths. 18 chapters, beginning and ending with yoga. Bhakti yoga, jñāna yoga, karma yoga, rāja yoga, sannyāsa yoga, etc., etc., 18 different ways. Patañjali modified it into the four: Karma yoga, bhakti yoga, rāja yoga, and jñāna yoga. Now, even Patañjali, even the Vedas, even the Upaniṣads, all great books, they write about rāja yoga. What is Rāja Yoga? Rāja Yoga means discipline. A king has to be disciplined. A king has to follow the rules. In ancient times, one king gave a new law. He called all his people from his kingdom. Well, that time kingdom was small. Now human population is very big. Well, the king made some laws and said, "Everyone has to follow these laws which I have given." Everyone has to follow. If they do not follow, they will be punished. After he said, but this law is not valid for the king. I am the king. I can do what I want. Master came, guru came. At that time, the master, the guru, the saint, the ṛṣi, the hermitage, the great holy saint, and he came with a stick. The master is a guru; he is above all. Brahma, Viṣṇu, Śiva, then they also said, Guru Brahma, Guru Viṣṇu, Guru Devo Maheśvara, Guru Sākṣāt Parabrahma, Tasmai Śrī Guruve Namaḥ, Dhyāna Mūlam Guru Mūrti. The master is coming with a stick, the whole audience stood up, the king also stood up. And Master said, "Sit down, King." He didn't say to the king to sit down. Master came with a stick in his hand, and three times he beat on the crown on the head of the king. "King, sit down. You say to your public the law which you made is valid for others but not for you. Law is for all. Sūrya is rising for all, and therefore you will be punished. Not that you think that you are a king and you will not be punished. Dharma will punish you, the principle, the discipline, the rules. So dharma, dharma means right, house, place, the justice. And king, this my stick is not a stick. It is a dharma daṇḍa. Daṇḍ means the stick, and daṇḍ means punishment. And since that time, all ṛṣis and yogīs have the stick in the hand. Even the Pope has in his hand the stick. Now they got, they said that the shepherds be someone's stick. So they stick for the shepherds. But it means that you are all sheep and the Pope is the shepherd. Symbolically, not like that, but it means the guru has the stick of dharma, not a physical stick—dharma. And so the stick is daṇḍa, dharma daṇḍa is everywhere. And that is very holy, very, very holy. They are carrying, yes, in every tradition, in every religion, dharma daṇḍa, dharma daṇḍa, dharma daṇḍa. Now, Rāja Yoga. Now, it's called politics. Sometimes people say, "Swāmījī, politics? And you are a saint? You are a sādhu? You are a yogī? And politics don't suit together. Oh, you are a great wise person. Good commentary you are giving. Do you know what is Rāja Yoga? So what is a Rājayoga? Rājayoga. So long ago, there were people. It was not so many humans, but there was all the time fighting. So one great saint made the rules. He made the rules for how to protect the folk, the community. How to protect the community? For that, the saint, the ṛṣi, gave one philosophy. That's called nīti. In Sanskrit, nīti. Niti, niti, niti. Nīti means ethics. The ethic principle. Ethic, ethic, ethic. Nīti, nīti, nīti. Dharma daṇḍa, dharma daṇḍa, dharma daṇḍa will daṇḍ you, because this is a nīti. The saints gave this ethic principle. You are a king, and they all are your children. Before, you had only a few children, and your wife, or your queen. But now the whole folk of your kingdom love them like your own children. Yes, this is your children. So the king, not the ṛṣi, he chose a person who is strong, has good knowledge, very logical thinking, selfless thinking, protection, and both in his hand. If one doesn't follow, then you have the daṇḍ stick also. So love, kindness, everything is there. So the ṛṣi chose one person from the community who is capable, who can stand up and talk, and say, and everybody will say, "Yes, we do agree." To that person, the ṛṣi gave him the knowledge, the philosophy of nīti. And the ṛṣi said, "The king of the forest is the lion, and now the king of the society is you." So, king—king means the rājā. What? Rājā. So now, rājā, I give the rājā the nīti. What happened? Rāja-nīti, okay. So, how the rāja-nīti, how the politics was born? The politics came in life. So it means that the king should follow the ethical, moral, and spiritual principles in order to save and protect the community. So, today, our new mayor, it was his first, second—his first day that he has got this chair. We wish him, and he said, "Swamiji, I will, I will build the society, not a city." And society means all our human society, equal understanding, and peace, harmony, and so on. So what it is after that? The speaker said it is a beginning. Yes, it is a beginning, a seed. When it comes in the earth, it takes a few days to sprout, and then this very tiny seed becomes an abandoned tree. It takes time to become a huge tree which will cover the whole globe. It's like a big tree, a mother tree. It's a mother. So it takes time to grow a tree, so day by day, you know, stone by stone. Who said this? The holy and so day by day, but sure, choose the strong one. Don't choose just some piece of dry earth that will break. So solid, our step, our thoughts, our actions, everything should be solid, then we can be successful. So Rājayoga. Rājayoga has given Patañjali: yama, niyama, āsana, prāṇāyāma, pratyāhāra, dhāraṇā, dhyāna, samādhi. So last, samādhi. The aim of yoga is called the knowledge, the knower, and object three merges into one. That is samādhi. That is oneness with God. Knowledge, knower, and object are three, but three merge into one. Knowledge, what I want to know, that knowledge is the object. Who wants to know? Myself. I would like to know what? That is knowledge. So knowledge, I am knower and object, three merges into oneness that becomes called the cosmic consciousness or the higher consciousness. Yoga practice is very important for our body. The body is not everything, but without the body, nothing is there. So we said, practice yoga every day, physical exercises, prāṇāyāms for energy, for concentration, for harmony. Let people think, and let people do what they want. You should concentrate on being in balance, and you will do good actions. One day they will realize, say, "Oh, you know, you have one house, second have one house, third, and then fourth one came and built a nice, designed house. Oh, I would like to have a house." Another one will come, "Oh, I would like this house. It is very good." So, the house is a house. There are also five elements in our body, but the master is that one. This is raw material, and from raw material you can make such a beautiful statue of Kṛṣṇa or Rāma or the Holy Mother Mary or Jesus. And this stone, which was under the earth, dug out, and the master was sitting on it and working, designing. Now that statue is on the altar, and we all kneel down, we all bow down. Why? The work of the master, the work of the guru. So, guru and disciple. The disciple should never cross over the guru. Always stay behind and always obey, obey, obey your master. Otherwise, your ego, your jealousy, your hate, your minimal knowledge can destroy you again. So, I wish you all the best, my dear. Yoga. Yoga karma suśakṣalam. Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa said in the Gītā, third chapter, Karma Yoga: "Yogaḥ karmasu kauśalam." Your yoga sādhanā will be successful through your action. Good work. So, if you became now the mayor of the city, the king of the city, what action would you take? In three years, you will know, or in five years? Three years. You will see that your actions, everything is coming, blood-jamming. Yeah, because after six years, of course, we don't let him always be the mayor. We are going to the higher places. It will grow day by day if he follows the Guru Vākya, Viśva Guru Vākya. That's it, Vishwa Guru. So thank you. All the best. Oṃ Asato Mā Sad Gamaya. Lead us from the unreal to the real. Tamaso Mā Jyotir Gamaya. Lead us from the darkness to the light. Mṛtyor Mā Amṛtam Gamaya. Lead us from mortality to immortality. Sarveṣām srastir bhavatu, all be healthy. Sarveṣām śāntir bhavatu, peace be everywhere. Sarveṣām maṅgalam bhavatu, harmony should be everywhere. Sarveṣām pūrṇam bhavatu, may we all achieve the complete bliss. The whole world should be happy, healthy, and joyful. I am not the doer. Prabhu Dīp is doing. Only Mahāprabhū Dīpā is doing. Oṃ Tryambakaṃ Yajāmahe Sugandhiṃ Puṣṭi-vardhanam, Urvārukam-iva Bandhanān Mṛtyor-mukṣīya Mā'mṛtāt. Oṃ Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ. Dīptal Bhagavān, Devādhi Deva, Deveśvara Mahādeva, Mādhava Kṛṣṇa Bhagavān, Satya Sanātana Dharma, Bhārata Mātā Kī Jaya. Oṃ.
