World peace tour 2009, Intelligent Emotions - The Art of Wise Decision-Making

The art of wise decision-making requires using intelligence, or viveka, to govern emotion and intellect. Emotion is a powerful, often uncontrolled motion arising from desire and greed. Acting solely from emotion leads to poor decisions and suffering. Intellect can become clouded, but viveka provides discernment. One must pause, reflect, and apply knowledge before acting. True wisdom balances emotion with clear discrimination, recognizing that greed, anger, and fear are internal obstacles that can be overcome through self-knowledge and universal love.

"Two quick decisions, and when you do two quick decisions, then be sure that it will go wrong."

"Therefore, a wise man says: whatever you do, think it over three times, four times. Wait, wait, and wait."

Part 1: The Intelligent Emotions: The Art of Wise Decision-Making Before the music begins, I want to show you something. May I? I have this toy. When I press the red button a little longer, it looks like this—and a miracle happens. Then it looks like that. So, what about you? Thank you for doing that. The sound is a little distorted this evening, so I apologize. You will understand anyway. Let us all join together in chanting the mantra "Oṁ" three times. We are only conditioning ourselves: close your eyes, take a deep breath, and chant the mantra "Oṁ" together, allowing it to penetrate the heart. That was very nice. We did not click anything, as that would have destroyed the atmosphere. I think one more would be appreciated. The chanting was about Gaṇeśa, and now it is about Śiva. As you pervado says, she had a problem with her knee. If someone can offer her a chair, thank you very much. Yes, you, India. If we say thank you, it means the fruit is gone. Then one becomes selfish because one has received something back from someone doing selfless service. So, between selfless service, selfishness should not come. Thank you. So, a blessing is best, or very good. Thank you. Probably we have been… all our friends here today have come from far and wide across Victoria—from Geelong, Torquay, Ballarat, as well as local Melbourne. We have all come to see you, to be with you, and to hear your words of wisdom. Tonight’s theme that Swāmījī will share with us is "The Intelligent Emotions: The Art of Wise Decision-Making." Many of you know Swāmījī already, and you know that we are about to receive truly beautiful teachings that we can quite usefully take into our daily life. They always give me the hard job. That is the life of the master. Anyhow, the program always begins with the chanting of a mantra. But now, brother and sister, they have said a very nice mantra, so it is not necessary to chant again. Many of you know, and many may not know, about Śrī Gaṇeśa. Gaṇeśa means the Lord of all. Gaṇeśa is the remover of obstacles. Gaṇeśa is the giver of happiness and success in life. Anything we begin in Hinduism or in the Vedic tradition, first we remember Gaṇeśa. Gaṇeśa is that divine energy, that mighty energy, which is capable of removing even big mountains if they are an obstacle on our path. We in India say, "Let’s begin to make Śrī Gaṇeśa," or if you begin something and someone comes, we will ask, "Is Śrī Gaṇeśa ho gayā?" It means, did we remember, did we worship, did we welcome Śrī Gaṇeśa? Śrī is prosperity; Śrī is happiness. So, anything we begin first is Gaṇeśa. There is a long story about Gaṇeśa, and because the subject is exactly… I think they knew what I would speak, so they said this first. Gaṇeśa is known as one of the best, intelligent Gods, and very simple. Well, there is a tale. There was a heavenly meeting, a cosmic parliament. You know, jealousy is everywhere, unfortunately. Plants are jealous; certain plants cannot grow beside other plants. Fruits are also jealous. Animals are also jealous. And, of course, humans definitely are. In psychology, jealousy means an undeveloped personality, one who is still not completely developed in human quality. So, the same as humans, they also have jealousy. It is a feeling, and this feeling sometimes we cannot stop. When celebrities come, some VIP comes, and when someone is remembered first and given the garland or flowers, then other celebrities will say, "Why did she get or he get first?" So, it is difficult to make a protocol for who should be the first. When we take the president of the country as the first one, the other political party is jealous, and next time we will choose our president. It is not like that. Similarly, there were also many goddesses or gods. God is one, but from time to time, He manifests in different forms. So, they had to make one resolution: Who should be first whom we should remember? Who should be first welcomed? The competition began. Challenges and competitions began from that time, so they made a decision: Who will be the first to run around the globe? So, it does not matter who it is—Śiva, Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Indra, or anyone. Gaṇeśa was also there. Gaṇeśa had a heavy body, a heavy trunk, like this. And the competition began, a marathon. And from that time, the marathon began. You know, you have competition from time to time, running. Gaṇeśajī was thinking, for me, this mother planet, Mother Earth, who gave me birth and who nourished my body, that is my own mother. So, with folded hands, he went around his mother and father, bowed down, and said, "I have already made the pradakṣiṇā." Others said, "No, that’s not right, that’s not correct." So, Gaṇeśa explained it to them. Therefore, it is said, "Mātṛ Devo Bhava"—Mother is the first God. Mother is our Mother Earth, do we say or not? Then all accepted, and first was Gaṇeśajī, and always Gaṇeśajī is remembered. On the house door, there is always a picture of Gaṇeśajī so that negative energy cannot come in. But do not put the Gaṇeśajī statue there where you put your shoes. So, either on the top of the door or inside somewhere, when you enter, first you see Gaṇeśajī. Believe me, no kaleśa and no vikṣepa will enter your house and your mind. Kaleśa means troubles, and vikṣepa means disturbances. Also, according to Vāstu, the heavenly architect, they said when you would like to make a house, you buy the ground. And now, for the foundation, the first ceremony is called the earth-breaking ceremony. According to astrology, one should know the constellation of the particular planets and the condition of the earth, where and in which condition the earth is. There is also a period where the earth is sleeping, and there is also a period when the earth is again active. There is a season when we should plant the seeds so that they will grow. These are the four seasons: winter, spring, summer, and autumn. The position of the earth is changing according to the planets’ effects. Then, facing towards east-north. East-north is mostly the position of Kubera. Kubera is the God’s treasurer. The treasure of God is in the hands of Kubera. So, Kubera, when he is happy and pleased with us, you will have enough. Even if you do not know how the money comes, you are happy. Not only the money, but every happiness is there because Kubera is blessing you like this, and from his hands is falling all the wealth, happiness, love, harmony, and everything. After that, you dig the foundation, remembering Gaṇeśajī, making Gaṇeśa pūjā. There is a Gaṇeśa mantra, there is a śānti part, and then the foundation is ready. When the foundation is ready, then they prepare the five stones, or five bricks, or five logs, again beginning from the east-north corner of your building. And if you cannot get the east-north corner, then the middle, but it should be in the direction of the east-north. Five stones represent five elements. After that, there is inside—before that, sorry—supārī ko kyā kahte haiṁ, bhai? Beetle nut. They make Gaṇeśa out of the beetle nut. It means they wrap this kind of thread around a betel nut and put it there as a Gaṇeśa and the light. Then come male and female snakes, symbolically made out of silver. A snake is known as the Śeṣanāga. That Śeṣanāga is coiled, and on the coiled Śeṣanāga, the Viṣṇu Śakti is residing. And Lakṣmī is awakened. Lakṣmī is again prosperity. And on the head of the Śeṣa Nāga, our planet is balanced. If Śeṣa Nāga moves his head or neck, an earthquake takes place. So, our foundation of our house is based symbolically on those Śarap, Śarapaṇī, Nāḍ, Nāginī. And then there are five stones as five elements. Then comes Maṅgaleś. Maṅgaleś means happiness or the harmony in the house, or in anything that we do, and that is coming from the cane sugar, the raw cane sugar. We call it gur. It looks like cheese. Very tasty, very sweet. Children like to eat it very much. I also like to eat it very much, so now I have to reduce it. After that comes the cement, that is the prāṇa, which keeps the two bricks together, and then you go build your house. Without obstacles, you will be successful. When the house is ready, then again you have to look to the constellation. On which constellation, which time of the day, will you first make fire in your kitchen? And that is called, we call it grahapraveśa, in which constellation you will move into your house with your things to live there. And what you call in English, housewarming party, no? But you have warmed already before, and after one or two months, you make a housewarming party. So, Gaṇeśa is known as a Buddhiśālī. Buddhiśālī means one who has a positive, good intellect. And Buddhishali means vivekī, that intelligent, viveka. There is a mind. Last time, I taught a long definition about the mind. Then comes the emotion, then comes the intellect. After the intellect comes the intelligence. The viveka is born out of the intellect. The cream of our intellect is vivekā. Anything we do—it does not matter what: eating, drinking, walking, sleeping, swimming—use the vivekā. If you will not use your viveka, you say, "Oh, I like it, and it’s beautiful." It can happen, the accident, because you did not take the safety, you were careless; it means you did not use your intelligence. Many people who have problems—either financial problems, family problems, health problems, and so on—we act out of our emotion. Two quick decisions, and when you do two quick decisions, then be sure that it will go wrong. Can you imagine what it is then, how is our condition when things go wrong? We blame ourselves, nobody else. Last year, this happened with me. Truth is truth. I will not say that I use all the time my intelligence. Sometimes people say, "Swāmījī, do it, it is good," and so on, and okay, and I am in a hurry. And we must do it, and we did it, and we had to pay, and we were sorry. All were unhappy and sorry that we were in too much hurry. Only one person, he said, "No, wait, Swāmījī." And that was one of my disciples called Arlois. Is he somewhere here? He is sitting, yes, Swāmījī. Wait. The other person said, "No, I’m in a hurry, and I have to go to New York or America and organize this and that. Tomorrow I’m going. I need that much money." He said, "No, wait." But others said, "No, Swāmījī, we should do it." And Swāmījī said, "Well, I am always for the majority, sometimes unfortunately, but you have to listen to the others also." So, how do we make a mistake, though we use our intellect, though we use our emotion, though we control our mind, and we trust? And sometimes, trusting can be a disappointment. Why? Because we did not use our viveka, our intelligence. I have one nice story. Suddenly I remember because of Gaṇeśajī again. When they were singing a nice song to Gaṇeśajī, I said, "Gaṇeśajī, please give me some material for this evening. You know what is intelligence, you know what is intellect, you know what is mind, and you know what is emotion. And I also know." But how to put it together to understand? So, the ancient way of teaching in India, and I am sure in different parts of the world also, the first way of teaching was a poem. To remember the poem, śloka, mantra, and poem is concentrated knowledge and very easy to remember. You read the whole book, you will not remember, but the essence of the whole book is in one poem. That is concentrated. Second, put this poem or subject in singing, so that it goes, resonates in the whole body, and when this vibration touches our heart, then many things become clear. Automatically, peace enters. When they say, "We will chant Aum," and the instrument was there, and we all chanted Aum, and then came this bhajan or the song, "Pin Silent." Not in this room only, but in the heart also. Many, many thoughts, restless thoughts, disappear. That is miracles, that is power, that is the effect of the mantra. And the third way is a drama with the mudrās. That is body language. So, the subject which you cannot understand in your school or college or university, then put that subject in the form of a drama. Main, main points: put Mr. So, Mrs. So, and so, and so, and then you play the one drama with that. You will remember without anything. Do not be nervous. Go for examination, and you will write, and you will be the best. And someone who is also playing wrong, we say, "Do not play theater." I know what is going on. That is also clever. One tries to be clever. But, clever one, to try to be clever without intelligence is mistaken. So, there was one master. Mostly, beautiful stories are with the masters and disciples. Sometimes poor masters, or sometimes poor disciples. It is not easy to be a disciple. But believe me, it is also not easy to be a master. Master used to tell his disciples, "Sabhi prāṇī merī ātmā hai"—think and know that every creature is myself. Ātmā sohī pramātmā, and that ātmā is the supreme one. See the light of God in everyone, is God. So, the disciples said, "Yes, Master, yes, Master, yes, Master." When you said yes, then it is okay. If you said no, maybe you are in trouble. So, say yes, and then after say yes, but that is it. So, there was one disciple, like our Gopāl, Swāmī Gopāl Purī, sitting here. You know all. You are the lucky one that you have such a good Swāmī, a very humble, very kind, very sāttvic, and very learned, advised one, "Good yoga, and then live teacher." So, I am happy for you that Swāmī Gopāl Purī is here and the sister Gītā. Gopāl and Gītā, right? The Gītā is a glory of Gopāla, and Gopāla is a glory of the Gītā. Perfect combination. So, Gopāl Purī begins to say, "Yes, everyone is God." One day, he went shopping in a small village. They were living somewhere in the huts, the forest, in small villages. There were only a few streets, and he went shopping. As soon as he entered the village, people began to shout, "Gopālpuri, Gopālpuri, be careful, run away." And he said, "Why?" They said, "A wild elephant is coming. Do not come on this way, go other side." He said, "No, everyone is God. My master said, 'See God in everyone,' so in this elephant is also God." So, he kept on peacefully going towards the elephant, and the elephant’s tail was turning, and its trunk was turning. The elephant was a little wild, angry, or mad elephant. As soon as Gopāl Purī came near, the elephant took him in its trunk. Thanks to God that He did not squish him completely and throw him far. The neighbor’s house, over the house, there was a swimming pool, so he fell in there. The swimming pool, but some ribs were broken. Yes, people helped him to come out of the swimming pool. Now he got conflict, he got doubt. When my master told me that in everyone is God, why did he not say to me, "In the elephant is no God"? And if he is a god in the elephant, how can he do these things? So, after that, he came to the ashram and he said, "Here is the vegetable, Master." Master said, "What happened to you?" "Nothing." "But what?" "That I believed you." That is why it happened. Oh, oh,... oh. Master said, "Yes, my son. What happened?" Then he told the whole story. Master said, "You know, use your vivekā, your intelligence. You believe that an elephant is a god; that is true. But you did not believe the people who were shouting and warning you. Was it not God in them?" "Yes, Master, that is true." "Then go and take a remedy, apply some haldi on your ribs, and the pain will be less." In Ayurveda, haldi, turmeric powder, is the best medicine. When you have a wound or you hit something, then quickly apply haldi on it. Make a paste and apply it. It will help, and it will heal quickly. So, many things which are very good, but we should know if they are good for us or not. Emotion is the mighty power in us. Emotion means in motion. You are in such a motion that you cannot control anymore. And that motion came out of your desires, out of your greed. And one young man made a driving license, very happy, "Now I have a driving license." And he was working, he took all his money, and he went to his grandmother to give her some money. And you know, grandmothers have a big heart. For the grandchildren, she said, "Okay, my son, here you are." And he bought a very beautiful and quick car. Now he is driving, new driver, you know. And when others are driving slowly or a little, he says, "Stupid. They do not know how to drive. They stop already when the light becomes yellow." He said, "Crazy, that is why traffic jam." He said, "Pass quickly." In him awoke this emotion to drive quickly, and he was thinking, "I am sure." So, he was driving 250 kilometers per hour, good road, and he was feeling, oh, what a beautiful car. And I am happy that I have a driving license. Then suddenly came the curve. There was a warning, but he did not see the warning. And a very sharp curve came. And now he could not control the motion of his emotion. The car he could not control, and what happened to the car? Car was making some kind of yoga exercises, rolling down and down and down. So, that is what we use, our intellect and our emotion, without using our vivekā or our intelligence. Therefore, it is said in China, a great wise man said, whenever his disciple asked him, he said, "Wait and have a cup of tea." And they said, "Can we do it, Master?" He said, "Wait." So long as the Master has not finished his tea from the cup, do not do it. Wait. And the Master was taking the cup and taking a little sip. They said, "Master, let us go." He said, "Wait." Because the Master knew what would happen if they did these things. Constellation went away, bad constellation, and good constellation came. Till their emotions calmed down. After the Master said, "Let us go," they said, "Okay, Master, I have no more joy to do it, but if you tell me, let us go." They went, and they saw there was an accident, and many, many people were involved in the accident, and some died. Using viveka, if there is emotion or greed, then greed will vanish our viveka and will blind our intellect and desires; our greed will grow. And so, there is another little story to this subject, how greed and emotion can destroy us. Countryside again, like the central part of Australia, no rain, sometimes raining. There were about 20 houses and a pool. So, there were two brothers, very strong. And both brothers loved each other so much that one brother would not eat as long as he did not see his brother. And they will sit and eat from one plate. Love between brothers, between sisters and brothers, very great confidence. Always, this brother said, "No, you are first, do it." He said, "No, no, brother, you are the elderly one, you do it. You have it first." Both of them took the camels, two camels, and one, one had a gun for security, as anything can happen. And both, they decided to go to Melbourne. For what? To find a job, to work, earn some money, something, and bring it to the village to help the poor people, to help the others and family. Both were married. They told their wives, "We are going tomorrow morning, at 4 o’clock. And please prepare some food that we can take with us." So, they prepared a little food. They were three days on the way, riding on the back of the camel. In the night, they spent the time in the jungle. On the fourth day, when they started their journey, one man came. He said, "Stop, stop, do not go further." And they said, "Yes, sir. Is something happening?" He said, "Not only happening. One kilometer far, there is a very dangerous ghost sitting there. And that ghost has killed many, many people. Do not go this way. Change your way." And both smiled and said, "Thank you for your warning, but you know, we are the warriors. And both of us, we have the guns. Any ghost comes, we will just blow them off. We are not so afraid. Thank you, anyhow." And they went. After one kilometer, suddenly on the way, near the path, there was a heap of golden coins, gold, about 100 kilos of gold. They both looked at each other and smiled. "You see the clever man? He went to get some transport and was saying to us and making us stupid. There is a ghost. What does he think? Now this gold belongs to us." Very happy. "Perhaps we had a good constellation when we started from home. We will load gold on our camels and go back home happy." So, they got off the camel and looked at the gold, and looked at the gold. You know, sometimes when people win the lottery, they get a heart attack. Yeah, when you get suddenly 500 million dollars or something more, my God, you really, ah, finished. There is a shock, so there are little shock therapies. Both brothers were sitting there. The elder brother asked his youngest brother, "Take some gold and coins, and look, there is some village, I think. Go and buy something to eat. We are hungry and tired. Come quickly, bring some food. We will eat, relax, and then we will load the gold on the camel’s back." So, the young brother took the camel, he went to another village there, went to the food store and bought the food, and there was a little restaurant, he also sat down and ate. While eating, his greed and emotion awoke, negative emotion. And his intelligence vanished. "If I alone had all this gold, I would be like a king. But unfortunately, I have to divide with my brother. I love my brother, but we are not immortal. Sooner or later, we will die." So, he bought poison, and he put it in the food. He ate himself there first, good food. And what he wanted to bring, there was poison inside. "I will come. I will tell brother, 'First you eat.' And he will eat. And while eating, he will say, 'Good night.' There are no more fights. That will be all right." So, he put the poison in the food, sat on the camel, and came back on the way back. On the other side, the elderly brother was sitting and making tratak. You know what is tratak? Gazing. Gold, gold, gold. You know, like a monkey sometimes gets hypnotized. So much gold. "I will be king of that entire area, all villages and so. I am a rich one, but I have to share with my dear brother. Well, he or I, one day we will die. I will give some gold to his wife so that she has enough to eat. I am sorry, my brother, but when he comes, he will come happily relaxed. He will not think anything." And he put the bullet in the gun. "I will just press the button, the hook of the gun, and brother will be immediately, without suffering, hurry home." So, brother came and he got off the camel and said, "Here is food, my dear brother." And he took the gun and shot him. He died on the spot. Now, the other brother is thinking, "Well, oh, my brother, oh, my brother." Of course, now love awoke again. "How stupid I am, and so." Now, he said, "First I will eat, and then, Lord, the God on both camels." And while eating, he just fell down and died too. After a few hours, the same man came back and he said, "Oh God, I told them there is a ghost sitting and will kill you." And the ghost killed them, so our greed is our ghost. Part 2: The Power of Discernment and the Nature of Emotions That can destroy family relations. That can destroy social relations. That can destroy physical, mental, emotional, and social health. Therefore, a wise man says: whatever you do, think it over three times, four times. Wait, wait, and wait. That means you have a good intellect; your intellect is very pure and clear, and you have your emotions under your control. And so it is, dear brothers and sisters, in everyone’s life we have certain situations, so we should use the viveka. Buddhi bhrāṣṭa ho jātī hai. Buddhi may become stupid, but viveka cannot become bhrāṣṭa. Viveka hīna ho saktā hai. It means one has no viveka, or one is so weak that one cannot master that emotion, and viveka disappears. Therefore, God Kṛṣṇa tells Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gītā: "Arjuna, before doing anything you do, first know the form of the deeds." When you know what kind of seed you are putting in the ground, then you will know what kind of fruit will come. Out of greed and emotion we are doing, but our inner self is saying that’s wrong. And sooner or later, those fruits will come back. And that is the difference between the intelligent emotion and the art of wise decisions in our life. That’s all. Thank you. Nīpānā and Bhagavānakī. Fear comes from two things. First is about the feeling of guiltiness. If we did some mistakes or if we are guilty, then we have fear. Second, the fear is coming from life situations which happened in the past. When you were a small boy, and some dog attacked you, but it was when you were a small boy, you know. Now you are strong and grown and everything, but still, when you walk in the street alone and some lone dog comes, then you have a little bit of fear; you will change the side of the street, because inside, the fear is predicted. So fear is from our guiltiness or from life experiences. Now, how to get rid of the fear? Very quickly, I will tell one story, okay? There was a small village, and the village children had to go to school in another village. There was a distance of two or three kilometers. On the way, there was a little rock and hill. And parents used to tell the children, "Come home immediately after the school hours, daylight." Children were saying, in this there’s one cave, and the ghost is living inside, and all. They were afraid. One day, one boy, after this school, he went to buy some ice creams or the lollies, or whatever you call, and he was a little bit slumpy, and when he came when it was already dark, and when he came near the cave, the ghost came and took him into the cave and put a big stone in front of the cave so that he couldn’t come out. The ghost said, "Well, boy, actually I wanted to kill you, but you are such a nice boy, so I will not kill you. But you work for me here." And whenever the ghost went out, he put a big stone, a rock, in front of the gate of the cave so the little boy couldn’t move and come out. One day, the boy asked the ghost, they became friends nearly. Where are you going every day? He said, "I am going somewhere, and then also we are having meetings: the goddess and devils, asuras and devas, with God. Please, can you ask God how long a life I have?" Okay, I will ask God. So when he came back, God said, "He has 95 years of life." He was thinking, "95 years I must spend there. Can you ask God, please, if he can make it shorter?" So, again he asked God, and God said, "Impossible, that’s in destiny and cannot be changed." He said, "Sorry." God said, "It cannot be shortened." "Then tell God, I don’t have 95, I want to have a hundred." So again he asked the third day to the God and God said, "No, not even one hour." Okay, so in the kitchen of the devil, there were some logs burning, and he took the log in his hand, and now he said to the devil, "I will burn you in this fire. You can’t kill me. Open the door." So he opened the door and went away. So that cave is our heart, and there is something sitting there, we can’t trust that, and there is a fear. And when the fear appears, our entire physical and mental power becomes weaker and weaker. But if you take that my destiny is so and so, nothing can happen to me, then fear will disappear. Anger, anger is a thief. He will steal from you everything on the door before you bring it into the house. So anger is the form of the devil. The devil drinks the blood of others, but anger drinks the blood of others and its own blood. When you are angry, your healthy blood cells die, life becomes shorter, and therefore emotions should be controlled. Good exercise for controlling anger is Bhujaṅgāsana, Śalabhāsana, and Dhanurāsana, which affect or influence our Svādhiṣṭhāna Chakra, you have in your yoga book, and drink cold water or cold milk and close your eyes for one minute and think, why am I angry? You are angry because someone did something wrong. Then think in the other direction. What will I say if I made this mistake and the other one will be angry with me? So put yourself in the other position. Immediately, your anger will be calm and free. So, anger is also rooted in fear. The weaker one has a strong anger, okay? Yes, Swamiji, you’ve told us about greed, anger, and fear. But what about love? Is it a rational or an irrational emotion? Well, we used to say God is love and love is God. Love is the mighty power in the universe, but if that love becomes greedy and if that love becomes selfish, then that love will bring very soon pain, suffering, and disappointments. So, practice in everyday life Rāja Yoga’s first two principles, Yama and Niyama. That will purify your love and will protect you from disappointment. Hello, Swamiji. I’d like you to speak about the nature of evil. About? The nature of evil. Evil. Is evil inside or outside, or both? And how does it manifest? Thank you. Ego is inside, within us. Ego is a dormant energy. Evil. Evil. Sorry, I don’t understand some time, Australian dialect. Excuse me. Well, it is said from the very beginning of creation in the entire universe, the two tendencies awoke, asurī-śakti and devī-śakti. Devī-śakti means positive or divine energy, and asurī-śakti means the devilish, negative energy. And, time to time, in yugas and yugas, there is a fight between both. Asuras would like to have power, and Devas would also like to have power. But Āsurī Śakti is destructive for all, Devīk Śakti is a protecting Śakti for all. Now, what we call that, the Ashuras, the evil, is within us. We can win everything if we project our positive power and love. It means it’s not necessary that you go in the street and tell everybody, "I love you, I love you," no? Then they will look to you and look to you, and then they will call the psychiatric ambulance. So our love is sending the prayers, peace, and forgiveness. So that tendency in us is mixed from our experiences and disappointments of pain. So there is a tendency awakening called revenge, and this snake of revenge is sleeping. But when one sees something, then that evil is projecting oneself onto others outside, and then it reflects back to our side. So a great saint taught, बुरा जो देखन को चला, बुरा न मिला कोई, जब दिल खोजा आपना, मुझ से बुरा न होई. Guru Nanak said, "I went to see the negative, the devils, the bad ones." I didn’t find. But when I searched within myself, the first, I am the bad one. I have bad visions, bad feelings, bad imagination, and I am projecting that others are the bad. So, as Mahatma Gandhi said, we hate the sin, not the sinner. That’s it. Welcome. You know, we have the webcasting, and about 105 countries are looking, and so you are in life there. Yes, Swamiji. Can fear and greed ever be extinguished fully? Thank you. Well, the fear and anger can be dissolved, overcome, and the best way is through knowledge. Ādi Guru Śaṅkarācārya writes in his book "Aprokṣānubhūti," When someone is walking in the night or even in the daytime, and about 50 meters, 30 meters far, you see a rope lying on the road. And you say, "Oh God, a snake!" Now, a snake is there, fear is there. Then you look and go a little nearer, and you say, "Ha, here is a rope." How stupid I am. Fear gone. From where the snake came, from where the fear came, and how the snake disappeared, and how the fear disappeared. Knowledge. So when the knowledge is there, then greed and fear both can disappear. And that’s why it is said, self-realization, ātmā-jñāna. When we will have ātmā-jñāna, then there is no fear. It is said, "Śivo’haṁ Śivo’haṁ." I am Śiva. I am Śiva. Shiva means consciousness. Shiva means beauty. Shiva means truth. Satyam Śivam Sundaram. Śiva means liberation. Śiva means the sky. And Śiva means the first one who manifested himself in this universe. So, the self-realization, śivo’haṁ śivo’haṁ, vahī ātmā sacchidānandamayahum. I am that ātmā, sat-chit-ānanda. Sat means the truth, the ultimate truth, not this, "She took my chocolate away," and "He took my bike away," and he said, "No, I didn’t take," not this. But the ultimate truth, therefore it is said, is Brahmasatyam Jagat Mithyā. Only the one truth that is the supreme, the Brahman, whatever you call it, Holy Father or God or whatever, truth remains ever truth. What is changing is not the truth. What is not changing is eternal. So sattā, citta, the consciousness. Above these three levels of consciousness: sleep, dream, and awake. Turīya means above all these three: past, present, and future. Ānanda is bliss. Not this ānanda when we eat ice cream and say, "Oh, nice," and then you come home and say, "No, this ānanda was only for a while, and now you have the problem with the throat." So the joy which you want to enjoy, that is less joy than the pain of that joy. So ānanda is the supreme, the God, eternal one, sat-cit-ānanda. I am the immortal ātmā. Body, changeable. Mind, changeable. Emotion, changeable. Intellect, changeable. And the soul, changeable. Saul is not an ātmā. Saul is an individual. An ātmā is a universal one. That’s why it is said, "Know thyself." Śaṅkarācārya said, "Who am I? From where do I come? What is the purpose of my coming into this world, and where will I go? Know thyself." Jñāna is the only solution to overcome fear, desire, greed, anger, and everything. So, try to develop universal love in the heart. Try to feel the pain of others, and that’s why it is a vegetarian life. How many animals are suffering? How many innocent animals are killed? They hang a cow with a chain on the rail, and then they pull it near, and she has a little baby embryo in her stomach, and with the electric saw, they just cut the body. Only from hearing this, we have fear, pain. All these big industries with the chickens, when they see the little chicken babies, they take the full bag and put it in the grinding machine. Life. A baby is a baby, my dear, whether it’s human or animal. And that karma comes back, and that’s why more and more humans are suffering. Therefore, develop universal love, love for all creatures, love for everyone. Vishwa Prani Meri Ātmā Hai, all are myself. Ātmā, and that is the Supreme One. Like that disciple Gopāl Purī, he was looking at Ātmā in the elephant without using Viveka. And so, the answer is this: get Self-realization, get knowledge, and practice forgiveness. Tolerance, tolerance among all religions, all beliefs. The spiritual belief, the religious belief for us means a very individual. Love is a very individual love. You cannot force someone to love someone, and therefore it is said, Rahim Dās was a great poet. He says the thread of love is so gentle, don’t break it. And if you break it, then you can’t join it. If you join it, it will remain a knot. And therefore, that love is so gentle, and we have to project this. Towards every creature, to everyone’s feeling welcome. Hello, my question is: how do we practice unconditional love with balanced emotions and not become martyrs? So, what happens if we are accepting everything? That’s happening using our intelligence, balancing our emotions, and it may be a situation that’s occurring quite often that is creating some pain for us. So, how do we practice unconditional love without being a martyr? Is my question. Thank you. Yes, my God, unconditional love. If you want to see it in practical, then see the mother with a small child, a newborn. The child is growing, and the child is now... the mother is feeding, breastfeeding, and the child is at her lap, and the child is kicking with... His leg, her mother, here and there, but mother doesn’t mind. Mother doesn’t have a bad conscience towards the child, and the child doesn’t have a bad conscience towards mother. That is unconditional love. Otherwise, we have to be very careful, for love can one day become a painful situation. Therefore, what does unconditional love mean? That is, between whom, where, that’s why God gave us intellect and vivekā, where to go and where not to go. It is said humans, after sunset, stay at home with the parents and have a nice time. But you go three o’clock somewhere in the night and come home alone, and something, conditional love, happens. So you say it was unconditional, but that was not unconditional. So, it is like this: we have to use our intellect, our vivekā, to pray for them. As the Upanishad says, all should be happy. And so, all should be happy. Sarva-śānti, śānti-śānti-sama, śānti-redhi. This is a beautiful Sanskrit mantra. You can read tomorrow in your Yoga and Dead Life book. We pray for them, and we bless them. That’s it. A doctor has unconditional love for his patients. But you know, when someone has an infectious disease, then he takes the, how do you call, the protections: mask, gloves, and everything, and then he gives the treatment. That’s it. So we should have a protection, and that protection is our mantra, Guru Mantra. When you practice constantly, Guru Mantra, then there is, like, a bulletproof glass around you. The negative energy cannot come; the negative will not attack you. Mantra, repeat mantra, mantra. Try. When something happens, you see there is something bad or something like this, repeat your mantra and change a little your path. Comfortable, you will come at home. Power of the mantra. And without mantra, spiritual life is like a body without a soul. Jab jab man ghabrāye, tum prathānā karo. Whenever you are scared, pray. Repeat your mantra. When you don’t see the way out, pray. Repeat your mantra, then you will have the light in your life. Welcome. Okay, so this is the last one. My name is Chichi. I just want to ask, what is the pure joy, and what is the true happiness? And joy and happiness. Is there any difference? Thank you, Chichi. You have much love from Gold Coast, okay? From your parents, adopted parents, yes, who taught me. What was the Pūrṇimā? Okay, so joy. Oh, my god, should I make a joke, or should I be serious? A joke. It will really spoil many things, but it will make you happy. Yeah, the joy and happiness, that’s it. Yes, the happiness is a reflection of the joy. Okay? You enjoy eating a mango, and now you are happy. Okay? That’s it. It must not be emotion; it can be good things too. Ānanda, where the happiness is without fear, without jealousy, without anything. Balanced. Balanced body, mind, and consciousness. Oh, yes. Thank you, Swamiji. I was just wondering if you could speak about anxieties. About anxiety, it is your own subject. We will speak next time, okay? But in very short, anxiety comes from the past experiences of life. The life situation from childhood with the parents, with the friends, with the things that you have seen, the things that happened in the film or like this, okay? Sorry. Sorry. That’s it. Okay, so I will end this with one little joke. A joke in which the answer is also okay, but it is, don’t think, please, okay? It is a little bit funny. One king asks his minister, "What is the most joyful, enjoyable? There is nothing above this. Even you stop everything and do that." Minister was a very clever, very intelligent person. He said, "Sir, the most joyful thing is to go to the toilet." King said, "Always you are telling me nonsense things, toilet things. Go and drink and dance, and let dance, the belly dance, the what they call kings that time, and this and this and music and what this is, go toilet." But his minister was so clever that he always proved that what he said was true. So, after two years’ time, he let the time pass. One day, the king organized a program one evening and invited some other kings and many people. And there was some dance and something where people have more fun, and the minister said, "Today is my chance." In Ayurveda, we have a very special herb. Those who do not believe in Ayurveda should try that herb. And then they will know that Ayurveda is a really effective remedy. And that herb is called Sonāmukhī. Sonamukhī is a plant that is about one meter high, and the leaves are used in Āyurveda medicine. It means, if you eat about five grams of the Sonāmukhī, or two grams of the Sonāmukhī leaves, powders or the leaves, then you will have diarrhea for about a whole day. So, before going to the party, the minister made something very nice, what you call finger bite, pakoras, the Indians, you know, something, little bit pakoras and samosas and something, and nice sauce to dip in and eat. Sauce is very hot with chili, mangoes, salt, and sweet. And in the pakoras, he put a lot of sonāmukhī. And his chutney sauce was green, but it was 60% sonāmukhī. Now, the king liked it very much. His favorite eating was. The king said, "Why now?" He said, "Sir, you don’t know how long you have to sit there. After the program, you will eat with your VIP guests, and you will be hungry. You are right. Yeah, you should be like this to me always." He ate and went, sitting high in his place, and some other kings were sitting beside. And now the music began, dancing began, and after one hour, when everyone began to laugh and enjoy, the king said to the minister, "Where is the toilet?" He said, "Why, sir? Oh, I have some feeling, not good feelings. I must go." He said, "Sir, that is not enjoyable. This is a joy." He said, "It doesn’t matter, I must go." He said, "Why do you give up this enjoyment and go to the toilet?" He said, "I know you are right. Go and serve food. Open the door." That’s it, so sometimes, you know, what is more powerful? Thank you, that’s all. And we will have a little meditation, five minutes, ten minutes, or some minutes, okay? So make yourself comfortable. And those who have a mantra, repeat your mantra with the mālā or without the mālā, anything. What you want to see in this hall, do it, because after we will close our eyes and there is nothing more new to see, so don’t. Open your eyes, adjust yourself in such a comfortable way that you will not feel discomfort, and gently close your eyes. Take one deep inhale and exhale, and relax the whole body. Relax your shoulders, relax your elbows, relax your neck muscles, relax your stomach muscles. Feel the whole body relaxed and comfortable, and withdraw yourself from the external world. For the time being, just be here in this hall. Be aware of the hall and the atmosphere in this hall. Relax. Relax the whole body from the toes to the top of the head and from the top of the head to the toes. No imagination, no concentration, no expectations, just be one with thyself and feel the well-being of your body, your mind. Just feel the well-being of thyself, your body, your mind, and your soul. Relax the whole body, and now feel the motionlessness of the body. Your body is relaxed, you are sitting straight upright, and there is no movement of the body. Feel the motionlessness of the body, and feel the body energy from your body. Your beautiful energy, or the prāṇa, is radiating. Relax, relax. With a relaxed body and mind, just gently and comfortably repeat your own mantra. Feel one with thyself. Now become aware of the breath. You know that you are inhaling, and you know that you are exhaling. Do not change the breath rhythm. Just let it flow as it is. All you know is that you are inhaling, and you know that you are exhaling. Relax. At the time of the inhalation, the trunk of the body is slightly expanding, and at the time of the exhalation, the trunk of the body is slightly contracting. Feel the breath ascending and descending, the breath process. Your body is relaxed, your body is comfortable, your body is motionless. You feel your energy, the prāṇa, and you know that you are inhaling and exhaling. The trunk of the body is slightly expanding and contracting. Time of the inhalation, you are inhaling the cosmic energy, the prāṇa śakti, which is nourishing your body, your mind, your intellect, your consciousness, and your soul. And with that exhalation, your whole body is radiating this cosmic light for the well-being of the whole planet. You are the receiver, and you are the giver. You are the channel of God’s love, the channel of the cosmic energy. Relax, relax, repeat your mantra. Feel the breath, cosmic energy, and draw your attention towards the anāhata cakra or the center of the chest inside. Relax means innerly relax, innerly relax, relax. Feel within your body relaxed and happy, relaxed. Yes, that happiness is within you, relaxed. Be one with thyself. Be aware of your being. Let your mantra repeat spontaneously and feel the presence of the divine within and outside of you. It’s not imagination, it’s reality. Relax. Relax inwardly. No motions. Just relax. Now, slowly deep inhale and slowly long exhale. Inhale and exhale. We will chant Aum three times, and while chanting Aum, try to extrovert yourself into the world and send your spiritual light and love for the well-being of the entire planet. Inhale. Inhale. Three times. Śānti. Oh. Shanti. Shanti. Slowly move your fingers. Move your wrists. Close the palm. Close the fist and open the palms. Move the shoulders and elbows, and fold your hands together and rub your palms. Place the palms on the face, bob your face muscles, and rub the eyelids slightly. Open your eyes, move the hands, and slowly bend forward till your forehead touches the ground, your palms touching the ground, elbows touching the ground. And feel a very gentle stretching on your back muscles and neck muscles. The tension of the neck and shoulders is releasing, and feel the blood circulation more and more towards the head, towards your eyes, ears, and face muscles. All the five jñānendriyas are nourished with the fresh prāṇa through the blood circulation. Stretching of your back muscles, and your chakras are getting active. And now, with the help of your hands, very slowly raise your head up and sit straight. That’s all for today. Wish you all the best. Very good evening and good night. God bless you.
